Farrow: NBC Wouldn't Run My Bombshell Weinstein Story

"Many news organizations" opted against reporting on Harvey Weinstein’s alleged sexual harassment "over many years."

"Many news organizations" opted against reporting on Harvey Weinstein’s alleged sexual harassment "over many years," said Ronan Farrow on Tuesday in an interview with MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow.

News media organizations and figures that considered publishing reports of the allegations were threatened with lawsuits, added Farrow; Weinstein had even threatened Farrow with a lawsuit, he said.

NBC refused to run his story, said Farrow, despite its readiness for publication.

Partial transcript below.

MADDOW: Why did you end up reporting this story for the The New Yorker and not NBC News?

FARROW: Look, you would have ask NBC and NBC executives about the details of that story. I’m not going to comment on any news organization’s story that they did or didn’t run. I will say that over many years, many news organizatons have circled this story and faced a great deal of pressure in doing so.

And there are now reports emerging publicly about the kinds of pressure that news organizations face in this, and that is real. In the course of this reporting, I was threatened with a lawsuit personally by Mr. Weinstein, and we’ve already seen that [The News York Times] has been publicly threatened with a suit.

MADDOW: NBC says that story wasn’t publishable, that it wasn’t ready to go by the time that you brought it to them. But obviously it was ready to go by the time you go to The New Yorker.

FARROW: I walked into the door at The New Yorker with an explosively reportable piece that should’ve been public earlier, and immediately, obviously, The New Yorker recognized that; and it is not accurate to say that it was not reportable [by NBC]. In fact, there were multiple determinations that it was reportable by NBC.

Farrow did not comment on political and partisan considerations in explaining how "many news organizations" decided against publishing allegations of Weinstein’s sexual harassment. He also neglected to comment on financial considerations related to business partnerships and advertising between news media outlets and film studios and distributors.

Farrow previously hosted a primetime show on MSNBC, and currently works for NBC.

On Tuesday, The New Yorker published a longform report by Farrow entitled, "From Aggressive Overtures to Sexual Assault: Harvey Weinstein’s Accusers Tell Their Stories."
