Approximately 50 people were killed, and 53 injured inside Pulse, a gay nightclub in Orlando following a mass shooting and hostage situation.
The killer, Omar Mateen, had a vest on him suspected of being an explosive device. Canine units detected explosives in Mateen’s car.
Following a shootout with police, one police officer suffered an eye injury when a bullet struck his kevlar helmet.
Orlando Police Chief John Mina said that attack appeared “organized and well-prepared.”
The shooting began around 2 AM, with an officer working at the club. After the officer engaged Mateen in a shootout outside the club, Mateen ran into the club. Breaking down a door with an armored vehicle and rescuing approximately 30 club patrons, police then shot and killed Mateen.
Left-wing CNN’s Jake Tapper reported that Mateen “pledged allegiance to ISIS.”
