The alt-right Richard Spencers and Paul Ramseys of this world base their childish and silly, but not inarticulate, notion of white identity pride on the principle that white people built Western Civilization. The logic goes as such:
- White people built Western Civilization.
- Western Civilization is mankind's greatest achievement.
- Therefore, white people are the WONDERBREDS of the bred factory.
The veracity of No. 1 we'll get to in a minute, but the No. 2 claim that "Western Civilization is mankind's greatest achievement" would be considered an a priori truth if not for leftists entrenched in the broader cultural spheres seeking its destruction by the debasing of Western values from within and the empowering of Western enemies from without.
Only one supremacy can we claim, whether we're black, white, Hispanic, or Asian: Western supremacy. Contrary to the alt-right's wicked distortions, this supremacy flows not from a supremacy of race or ethnicity, but of ideas, or rather a "cult" of ideas that manifest themselves in our physical interaction with both the world and each other. No surprise then that the word "culture" flows from the world "cult" — a society's collective values and beliefs that transcend beyond the metaphysical and into the world itself.
This "cult" manifests itself in various ways, from something as lofty as the U.S. Constitution, to something as harmonious as Beethoven's 9th Symphony, to something as beautiful as Notre Dame, to something as remarkable as the Space Shuttle, to something as inviolable as human rights.
The Western "cult," going as far back as 2,000 years, has based itself on four indispensable principles that no civilization in the history of the world has assembled. They are:
- CREATIO EX NIHILO: That a monotheistic, eternal God who demands we call Him "Father" created the world and humanity out of nothing. Christianity would later define this God as Triune.
IMAGO DEI: That all human beings are made in the image and likeness of God and therefore afforded inalienable dignities.
LEX NATURALIS: That God encoded into nature an inalterable moral and natural law that mankind cannot violate.
DEI VERBUM: That God revealed these inviolable moral and natural laws to mankind: the Torah, the Gospels.
Those four principles form the basis of what we know as the Judeo-Christian "cult," which subsequently baptized the philosophies of Plato, Aristotle, and Socrates after the fall of Rome to form Western Civilization — the marriage between Athens and Jerusalem.
This does not mean that people outside this "cult" have achieved feats without merit or have no inherent dignity or value. Nor does it excuse or diminish the sins committed by Westerners against outsiders or claim that Westerners always ascended to the precepts of this "cult." It only means that other "cults" (Islamic, Eastern) fail to achieve what Aristotle, St. Augustine, and St. Thomas Aquinas understood as the "Common Good" or "Eudaimonia" — the conditions that allow for widespread human flourishing.
Everyday we enjoy the fruits of this human flourishing, though woefully unequal in its distribution. We enjoy them when we drive our cars to work, and when our work awards us the just fruits of our labors, and when the just fruits of our labors allow us to buy a home, and when that home provides us the security to build a family — the essential building block of all civilization.
The Judeo-Christian "cult" achieves this "Common Good" because the four principles outlined above best enable its adherents to harmonize their relationship with the chaos of nature, which Hobbes described as "nasty, brutish, and short."
The principles enabled us to form functioning governments that prevented tribal factions because they offered membership to outside tribes. This transformed Europe from a pagan ghetto into Christendom. They enabled scientific discovery because the monotheistic concept of a "Father Creator" dictated that the natural world would have embedded in itself the laws of the lawgiver. God's command to "Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth, and subdue it" formed the impetus. They enabled human rights because the "Imago Dei" dictated that all humans were "endowed by their creator with certain unalienable rights."
Pagans believed, and still do, in polytheistic gods, who took on characteristics outside of the natural law. The God of the Judeo-Christian "cult" revealed Himself as a masculine Father, who descends into creation as a husband descends into his wife, and calls his offspring "Children." He rules over all, and none shall overcome Him. Polytheistic gods often competed for power (tribalism) and used humanity as pawns for their amusement (Homer's The Iliad), and who were hemophrodites (Hapi, the god of the Nile) or hybrids (Centaurs).
That white Europeans inherited the Judeo-Christian "cult" says nothing unique about their race, and only about their luck of geography. These were precepts given by divine grace, not invented by white people, and had Muhammad and his Islamic hordes not extripated the Judeo-Christian "cult" from the Middle-East and North Africa, the racial makeup of what we know as Western Civilization would be vastly different.
Prior to the Judeo-Christian "cult," the Roman Empire could arguably boast as mankind's greatest achievement — an empire built off the backs of slave labor, that descended into decadence, and then sacked by barbarians. So it's telling then that the alt-right call themselves defenders of Western Civilization while rejecting the Judeo-Christian "cult" that built it, and ascribe to pagan tribalism.
Like the Left, they want Christendom without Christianity; to reap the benefits, but not to pay the dues. Like the Left, they must be stopped. Western Civilization depends on it.
