Hard-left, anti-cop New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio is eyeing a presidential run in 2020, according to a report by The New York Post’s Richard Johnson.
Citing interviews with New York City political operatives, Johnson suggests that de Blasio has been hard at work attracting donors from across the country who want to support a further left alternative to what they anticipate will be a more mainstream slate from the DNC. “De Blasio, 56, will claim he’s the rightful standard bearer for the progressive wing of the Democratic party,” writes Johnson.
“He thinks he’s the inheritor of the [Elizabeth] Warren and [Bernie] Sanders legacy,” a Democratic source tells Johnson.
According to Johnson, the leftist mayor is “spreading whispers that Bernie Sanders, 75, and Elizabeth Warren, 68, are too old, sources say.” And according to one Democratic power broker who spoke with the Post, the message may be resonating: “no one told Warren and Sanders they were dead.”
A champion of the far-left progressive cause, de Blasio has been a particularly controversial figure in his home city of New York.
As The Daily Wire’s Frank Camp reported, disgruntled New York City residents have confronted the mayor on more than one occasion to express their concerns about the way he’s been treating New York City's finest — the men and women in blue.
In the wake of Black Lives Matter-inspired violence, de Blasio has not only refused to support the police department, but appeared to smear cops as insensitive racists. In response, NYPD officers have displayed their disgust with the mayor’s problematic posturing, turning their backs on the mayor during public events, including a recent funeral for a member of the NYPD.
In July, “hundreds of NYPD officers turned their backs on New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio during the funeral for assassinated officer and mother of three, Miosotis Familia,” reported The Daily Wire’s Amanda Prestigiacomo. “The symbolic gesture by officers toward the anti-cop mayor was reminiscent of the funeral procession for assassinated officer Wenjian Liu back in 2015.”
It’s difficult to imagine what America would be like under de Blasio’s far-left rule. However, his management of New York City offers a localized example of what this ideologue is capable of.
On de Blasio’s watch, and under de Blasio's policies, violent crime has spiked in New York, homelessness has gotten worse, and Syrian refugees have been welcomed in droves. As is typical with socialist fiefdoms, the city has suffered as de Blasio himself has (allegedly) profited; the city and the de Blasio administration have been dogged by accusations of campaign finance violations, profiteering, and corruption.
Adding insult to injury, de Blasio joins his liberal counterparts in San Francisco, Chicago, Los Angeles and elsewhere in defying the federal immigration law and embracing the dangerous idea of sanctuary cities for illegal immigrants.
