Spider-Man just beat the assembled Avengers where it counts — at the box office.
“Spider-Man: Brand New Day” earned $360 million at the domestic box office in its opening weekend, making it the biggest opening of all time. The 2019 superhero extravaganza “Avengers: Endgame” held the previous record of $357 million.
Everyone’s favorite wall-crawler had a little help. The Punisher (Jon Bernthal) and The Hulk (Mark Ruffalo) co-star in the fourth “Spider-Man” feature starring Tom Holland. Still, the film’s gargantuan take signals something profound.
Superhero fatigue is situational, at best, with the summer’s “Supergirl” revealing that its relevance still matters in extreme cases. Plus, reading the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s last rites may be premature, even if recent titles (“Captain America: Brave New World,” “Thunderbolts”) failed to blow away the competition.
Yet caveats abound, and they’re all worth exploring.
Let’s start with “Spider-Man: No Way Home.” The 2021 romp did more than unite three Peter Parkers in one film. It proved a nostalgic smart bomb, revisiting old villains for a near-perfect blend of action, adventure and humanity.
Plus, the film came out as the COVID-19 lockdowns were easing, letting the country enjoy the theatrical experience again. The goodwill generated by those elements proved massive, setting the stage for “Brand New Day.”
After all, the latest Spidey adventure doesn’t have a sizable hook. It doesn’t continue a major plot point from previous MCU films. The villain has been hidden in the marketing rollout, robbing the film of a key selling point.
The MCU didn’t hire a “name” director (think Spielberg, Tarantino or Villeneuve) to tackle the assignment. Destin Daniel Cretton previously helmed “Shang-Chi,” a well-received MCU effort but far from a blockbuster.
There’s something deeper here — a type of attraction that demands the attention of not just superfans or Marvel acolytes. America’s favorite wall-crawler holds special appeal that can’t be relegated to the halls of Comic-Con like some obscure spin-off side character. Spider-Man has been part of Western culture for decades, from the animated TV show with the catchy theme song (“… Spider-Man, Spider-Man, does whatever a spider can”) to Saturday-morning cartoons and a late-1970s TV show with Nicholas Hammond.
He’s a science nerd and social outcast, the kid who got bullied in school until a radioactive spider changed, well, everything. He remains relatable and real, even if we can’t swing from skyscraper to skyscraper.
Plus, he’s had the benefit of sublime actors bringing him to life. Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield proved to be critical casting choices, while Holland has masterfully allowed his Peter Parker to mature before our eyes.
The new film finds him fighting crime while missing his best bud, Ned (Jacob Batalon), and his girlfriend, MJ (Zendaya). That matters.
The “Spider-Man” films fall under the Sony banner, even while Disney’s MCU recently paired up with the film studio. That means the live-action Spider-verse didn’t follow the woke road that derailed the MCU in recent years.
No forced identity politics or woke plot points. The Sony films proved smart, resourceful and effective. The same can’t be said for MCU clunkers like “The Marvels” and “Eternals.”
The MCU has course-corrected of late, even including some pro-life messaging in last year’s “The Fantastic Four: First Steps.”
The MCU still has a galaxy of minor heroes who could save the day (and crush the box office), but they must be launched wisely. Most people didn’t know what a Deadpool was, but star Ryan Reynolds used his personal touch and plenty of humor to <a href="https://ew.com/article/2016/02/17/deadpool-viral-marketing-campaign/?srsltid=AfmBOorzn6DjOSRQkkS7_oTgEF4iEAMZhxtAUCkv5FVQEl41jDfZp8oi">sell the character to the masses.</a>
A decade after its solo film debut, Deadpool is a familiar pop culture staple and a phenomenon that has far exceeded the 2016 film’s modest $58 million budget.
Reynolds &amp; co. also showed fidelity to the source material, telling fans they could trust the stories coming to their local cineplex. Geek Nation is a tiny fragment of the movie-going audience, but its members are the best marketers an MCU film can have when they’re working on your behalf.
Holland himself has played a key role in this MCU success story. The British actor doesn’t say a peep about ICE, voter ID, or other red-hot-button issues. He’s charming in publicity interviews, even keeping a low boil on his marriage to fellow superstar Zendaya, a kind of humility akin to “Brand New Day” — even down to the old-school Spidey suit that goes without the bells and whistles seen in recent MCU adventures.
That goodwill matters. Plus, <a href="https://screenrant.com/spider-man-brand-new-day-hulk-return-success-mark-ruffalo-comment/">Team MCU apparently benched Ruffalo</a> during the “Brand New Day” press tour, knowing the far-Left actor would likely distract from the film with his progressive lectures.
It’ll be much harder to silence the crush of stars assembling for this winter’s “Avengers: Doomsday” feature. The December 18 release is a who’s who of superhero actors, and the stakes couldn’t be higher.
If an “Avengers” film can’t pull off Spidey-sized numbers, then the MCU will be better off hyping their best individual characters moving forward. Why spend all that money on a film that can’t outperform a geeky wall crawler?
The X factor that can’t be overlooked? The old saw “a rising tide lifts all boats” still matters. The theatrical model made a stunning comeback this year, with breakout hits like “The Super Mario Galaxy Movie,” “Project Hail Mary,” “Toy Story 5” and “Obsession.”
Suddenly, going to the movies is cool again, with Gen Z often leading the way. That might be the one superpower the MCU needed most of all.

When did valuable historical artifacts become red carpet accessories?
At the London photocall for the new Christopher Nolan adaptation of The Odyssey, actress Zendaya wore a pair of 3,000-year-old Iranian gold discs as <a href="https://www.msn.com/en-us/movies/news/zendaya-channels-goddess-athena-in-custom-gown-at-the-odyssey-photocall/ar-AA27gIzA?gemSnapshotKey=GM04793495-snapshot-3&amp;uxmode=ruby&amp;cvid=6a5842f6f2da454795e05fe3f0d74938&amp;ei=14&amp;ref=hyperallergic.com">earrings</a>, intended as a nod to the film’s ancient setting and her role as the goddess Athena. The earrings were beautiful for the exact same reason they should not have been worn: these are 3,000-year-old artifacts of an ancient civilization with immense historical value.
Looking at these earrings, I find myself agreeing with Indiana Jones: <a href="https://www.youtube.com/shorts/dTdX0iNXOFg">that belongs in a museum</a>.
Artifacts such as these gold discs ought to be protected and preserved so that we can further learn from and about them. Instead, jeweler Glenn Spiro, who openly has a <a href="https://galeriemagazine.com/glenn-spiro-turns-antique-treasures-into-wearable-art/">lax relationship with provenance</a>, mounted the discs onto gold and diamonds to turn them into earrings a fashion-forward starlet would be proud to wear as part of his collection, Materials of the Old World.
Not only are the pieces of this collection putting at risk incredible and historically important pieces by marketing them for the type of wear that could permanently damage them, but the jewelry itself is an alteration tantamount to destruction. Zendaya did not simply carelessly wear ancient Iranian jewelry, but discs warped into earrings by contemporary hubris.
After Spiro’s alteration and Zendaya’s red carpet jaunt, these discs are no longer just treasures of a bygone civilization, but also a prop in a contemporary jeweler’s collection and a celebrity’s red carpet lookbook. This addition changes their story and meaning through modernization.
Maybe someday, these earrings will be seen as a compelling continuation of a beautiful object between two cultures, such as the <a href="https://www.nga.gov/artworks/1437-chalice-abbot-suger-saint-denis">Chalice of the Abbot Suger of Saint-Denis</a>, a stunning 12th-century French mounting of a First-century BC Alexandrian cup, but I’d be loath to compare a Medieval Cathedral’s chalice for Mass with red carpet jewelry.
Now, justified or not, these pieces are a part of Zendaya’s story. Her brand can turn thousands of years of history into a fun fact, a footnote for the fashion, rather than the other way around.
And this story neither begins nor ends with the earrings. There has been a <a href="https://hyperallergic.com/zendayas-earrings-are-part-of-a-much-bigger-problem/">long history</a> of dealers and collectors dismantling and repurposing ancient artifacts for profit and contemporary fashion at the cost of historical context and understanding.
I love estate jewelry, but there’s a huge difference between a well-preserved Edwardian ring and ancient Egyptian or Roman beads restrung into contemporary pieces. The former maintains continuity while the latter obscures the provenance of the original piece and limits, if not destroys, what archeological evidence could be found to date or further contextualize the artifacts in an effort to make them more consumable.
More modern history has similarly been rifled through for one night of glamour and press attention. Kim Kardashian attended the 2022 Met Gala in the gown Marilyn Monroe notoriously serenaded President John F. Kennedy on his birthday. The gown is shifting in the cultural imagination from the iconic “Happy Birthday, Mr. President” dress to “that Marilyn Monroe dress Kim Kardashian borrowed.”
Fears of the historic dress being permanently damaged were likewise proven justified when, after her red carpet appearance, the fabric was stretched, seams were torn, and crystals were missing. Whether they were from Kardashian’s wearing or past mistreatment from previous owners, this damage makes one fact unmistakably clear: historic artifacts are not safe on red carpets or in closets.
The impulse to play dress-up with historical treasures is an understandable one, as many women who have visited the V&amp;A’s fashion history and jewelry collections or the <a href="https://americanhistory.si.edu/explore/exhibitions/first-ladies">National Museum of American History’s First Ladies</a> exhibition can attest. The craftsmanship, beauty, and weight of history imbue these museum-quality pieces with an unmistakable fascination. But the exact cause for the fantasy is why it ought not be fulfilled.
Our understanding of world history and these long-gone cultures is strengthened and even shaped by the art and artifacts archaeologists discover and museums maintain. Well-preserved pieces such as these discs are exciting finds for collectors or curators, as their sheer physical beauty and outstanding condition just beg to be admired and studied carefully.
“Grave-robbing chic” is dangerous, not stylish. Historic artifacts belong in museums where they can be properly preserved, studied, and enjoyed by the public for generations, not on a red carpet to be photographed and then forgotten.

As if we haven’t had enough Odyssey controversies over the past week, the latest cultural faux pas comes courtesy of &#8220;The Odyssey&#8221; actress Zendaya, who <a href="https://hyperallergic.com/zendayas-earrings-are-part-of-a-much-bigger-problem/">wore</a> a 3000-year-old pair of earrings to a photocall in London earlier this month.
And as usual, the Left is losing it.
A reporter for Buzzfeed <a href="https://www.buzzfeed.com/chelseastewart/zendaya-ancient-earrings-the-odyssey">called</a> her fashion statement “American audacity at its best,” while writers at Hyperallergic <a href="https://hyperallergic.com/zendayas-earrings-are-part-of-a-much-bigger-problem/">observed</a> that the earrings reveal a “controversy within a longer pattern of Western indifference to the ethics of trading.” Commenters on X were quick to <a href="https://x.com/themeulemeester/status/2076953937714827327">point out</a> that Zendaya’s earrings come from “a white jeweler based in london who loots countries in africa and the middle east of ancient artifacts,” which, as <a href="https://x.com/themeulemeester">@themeulemeester</a> sneers, is “typical of the british but extremely low for two black ppl to support.”
While it is tempting to roll our eyes at our leftist friends and their ongoing obsession with colonialism, they may have a point.
I don’t agree with the Left’s characterization of Zendaya as some sort of unethical desecrator of ancient culture, nor do I buy the framing of her fashion choices as a manifestation of Western imperialism. I do, however, believe that there is a broader conversation to be had about our society’s fundamental inability to respect traditional institutions and the valuable artifacts that define our cultural heritage.
According to <a href="https://barron-london.com/collection?ref=hyperallergic.com">Barron London</a>, Zendaya’s earrings are “a pair of Ziwiye gold medallion plaques, circa 1st millennium BC Iran.” Hyperallergic <a href="https://hyperallergic.com/zendayas-earrings-are-part-of-a-much-bigger-problem/">reports</a> that the earrings were looted from an archaeological site home to “gold, silver, and ivory objects reputedly discovered by local villagers in northwestern Iran.” These circumstances have led many commentators to conclude that the earrings would have likely made their way to a museum had a proper excavation taken place — at the very least, they might have been treated with more care before being immediately fashioned into an accessory for consumption by Hollywood celebrities.
In other words, our culture has a fundamental lack of respect for the traditions of antiquity — and this attitude extends well beyond archaeological artifacts. The same impulse to refashion the past according to contemporary tastes has also shaped one of this year&#8217;s biggest cultural phenomena — Christopher Nolan&#8217;s &#8220;The Odyssey&#8221; — and explains the broader debate surrounding the film.
It’s true that many reviewers on the Right came away from the film with glowing reviews. Daily Wire’s own Ben Shapiro <a href="https://variety.com/2026/film/news/ben-shapiro-the-odyssey-masterpiece-christopher-nolan-1236816164/">called</a> the film a “masterpiece,” and Dave Rubin <a href="https://x.com/RubinReport/status/2078647793950830745">echoed</a> these same words on X. But Christopher Rufo’s <a href="https://x.com/christopherrufo/status/2079220744962347132">mixed</a> review calls attention to a greater issue within the world of the film that reveals our culture’s general defiance of tradition: Rufo acknowledges that the film was “engaging” but laments the departure from the source material. And therein lies the heart of the controversy about Nolan’s most recent hit: as a culture, we approach the past as editors rather than as heirs, compulsively updating ancient traditions to adhere to our contemporary values. In this case, we refashioned Homer to reflect our own moral and psychological assumptions rather than asking what Homer intended to teach us about his own world.
There is, of course, nothing wrong with artistic adaptation on its own. Every generation has staged Shakespeare and painted biblical scenes in styles that resonate with the changing times. But there’s a difference between reimagining an ancient story and reshaping its moral universe — and Christopher Nolan’s &#8220;The Odyssey&#8221; veers toward the latter.
Anyone who has read &#8220;The Odyssey&#8221; knows that much of Greek culture is bound up with pride and glory; the Greeks repeatedly explored the idea of hubris — pride taken to a dangerous extreme — in their many mythological creations. The myth of Icarus, for instance, depicts a young man who dares to fly too close to the sun and falls tragically back to earth, drowning in the sea; in the Arachne story, Arachne believes that she can beat Athena in a weaving contest and is consequently transformed into a spider. It is reasonable to conclude, therefore, that a Greek hero from Homer’s time would have wrestled with the distinction between pride and hubris, and the great translations of Homer&#8217;s &#8220;Odyssey&#8221; into English — from Chapman’s 17th-century translation to Fagles’ more contemporary interpretation from the 1990s — echo this heroic sensibility.
The Odysseus we see in Nolan’s adaptation, however, lacks the heroism that defines Homer’s great warrior. In the poem, Odysseus repeatedly revels in his victory at Troy — perhaps even to a fault. In the film, on the other hand, Odysseus regrets his actions at war and suffers from a PTSD-like trauma that seems more appropriate for a Vietnam War vet than a Hellenic hero. At one point in the film, Odysseus is even referred to as a “veteran,” a term that better suits the ethos of a contemporary audience rather than the world of Homeric Greece. Throughout the film, Zendaya’s Athena haunts him in the form of a young girl his men behead during the sack of Troy, and by the time he reaches home, Odysseus breaks down in tears before his wife Penelope. Filled with sorrow and regret, he suggests that the Trojan War was ultimately fought for nothing.
The overall result is a softer, more traumatized Odysseus — but certainly not a characterization that stays true to the legacy of the Ancient Greek world.
Nolan’s film is a fantastic standalone piece of cinema, but one can’t help but feel disappointed at his sharp departure from the source material. Instead of portraying Odysseus as the glory-seeking hero we’ve known for centuries, Nolan updates his character to become more palatable to a modern audience, tailoring his film for contemporary consumption — but only at the cost of doing a great disservice to the heritage of Ancient Greece.
Taken in tandem with the broader debate about &#8220;The Odyssey,&#8221; the Zendaya controversy becomes especially revealing of our constant urge to repurpose the past according to the priorities of the present. Perhaps that&#8217;s why so many people instinctively felt uncomfortable seeing a 3,000-year-old artifact dangling from a celebrity’s ears — some things are simply too valuable to become vehicles for exploring our own modern sensibilities. Because at the end of the day, inheritance requires both stewardship and cultural understanding.
The Greeks understood that they were custodians of a civilization larger than themselves. We would do well to recover that same reverence.

In a <a href="https://www.vogue.com/article/zendaya-may-cover-2024-interview">Vogue</a> article, the 27-year-old actress &#8212; born Zendaya Coleman &#8212; admitted she has &#8220;complicated feelings about kids and fame and being in the public eye, or being a child actor,&#8221; noting there&#8217;s &#8220;cases of it being detrimental&#8230;&#8221;
&#8220;And I think only now, as an adult, am I starting to go, Oh, okay, wait a minute: I&#8217;ve only ever done what I&#8217;ve known, and this is all I&#8217;ve known,&#8221; Zendaya explained.
