The Department of Justice (DOJ) will begin handing over documents regarding deceased sex offender Jeffrey Epstein to Congress by the end of the week, House Oversight Chairman James Comer (R-KY) announced on Monday.
Comer shared the development one day before the deadline listed in the <a href="https://oversight.house.gov/wp-content/uploads/2025/08/2025.08.05-Subpoena-and-Schedule-to-DOJ.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">subpoena</a> he issued to the DOJ.
“Officials with the Department of Justice have informed us that the Department will begin to provide Epstein-related records to the Oversight Committee this week on Friday,&#8221; Comer said in a statement.
&#8220;There are many records in DOJ’s custody, and it will take the Department time to produce all the records and ensure the identification of victims and any child sexual abuse material are redacted,&#8221; he added. &#8220;I appreciate the Trump Administration’s commitment to transparency and efforts to provide the American people with information about this matter.&#8221;
A spokesperson for the DOJ declined to comment.
Comer <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/congress-subpoenas-clintons-doj-records-and-former-officials-in-sweeping-epstein-investigation" target="_blank" rel="noopener">subpoenaed</a> the DOJ on August 5, the same day he issued subpoenas demanding Epstein-related testimony from former President Bill Clinton, his wife and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, and several ex-law enforcement leaders on dates ranging from mid-August to mid-October.

The Oversight Committee also issued a <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/house-subpoenas-epstein-associate-ghislaine-maxwell">subpoena</a> to Ghislaine Maxwell, who is serving <a href="https://www.justice.gov/usao-sdny/pr/ghislaine-maxwell-sentenced-20-years-prison-conspiring-jeffrey-epstein-sexually-abuse">a 20-year prison sentence</a> after being found guilty of conspiring with Epstein to sexually abuse underage girls, but has yet to finalize details for a deposition after she <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/ghislaine-maxwell-sends-congress-list-of-demands-for-deposition" target="_blank" rel="noopener">demanded</a> immunity and other &#8220;conditions.&#8221;
All of the subpoenas were approved by members of the Oversight Committee before Comer sent them out.
Epstein, a wealthy financier and convicted sex offender, was found dead at the age of 66 in his New York City jail cell in 2019 — after being arrested on sex trafficking charges involving young girls. In addition to the Clintons, Epstein had connections to a variety of high-profile people, including President Donald Trump. The Clintons and Trump have sought to distance themselves from Epstein over the years.
In his <a href="https://oversight.house.gov/wp-content/uploads/2025/08/2025.08.05-Subpoena-Cover-Letters.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">cover letters</a>, Comer explained how the Clinton family &#8220;appears to have had a close relationship&#8221; with Epstein and Maxwell. To the former law enforcement heads, the chairman noted the various ways the FBI and DOJ were involved in investigations, litigation, and other matters related to Epstein and Maxwell during their tenures.
The first deposition took place on Monday with former Attorney General William Barr, who was cooperative while answering questions from both Republican and Democratic staff and members, a source familiar with the matter told The Daily Wire.
Barr made clear that Trump never provided any views or instructions related to the criminal case against Epstein or his death, and that he never saw any evidence suggesting Trump committed a crime, according to the source, who added that Barr further stated that he believed the Biden DOJ would have released any incriminating evidence against Trump if such evidence existed.
The Daily Wire confirmed with a House Oversight Committee aide that the panel intends to withdraw its subpoena to former FBI Director Robert Mueller, who also served as special counsel of the Trump-Russia investigation from 2017 to 2019, because it learned that health issues preclude him from being able to testify. The Daily Caller was the first to <a href="https://dailycaller.com/2025/08/18/robert-mueller-house-oversight-committee-subpoena-james-comer-jeffrey-epstein-fbi/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">report</a> the development.
Lawmakers have increasingly pushed for transparency after the DOJ claimed it had no evidence that Epstein had a client list, blackmailed powerful people, or was murdered — despite earlier <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/shes-great-trump-backs-bondi-wants-top-officials-to-end-conflict-over-epstein" target="_blank" rel="noopener">hints</a> from Attorney General Pam Bondi that major bombshells would be revealed.
At the behest of Trump, who has argued that people are falling for a “hoax” spun by the Democrats, Bondi asked multiple judges to unseal grand jury testimony from the cases against Epstein and Maxwell. So far, those requests have been denied.
The DOJ held a <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/justice-department-meets-with-ghislaine-maxwell" target="_blank" rel="noopener">meeting</a> with Maxwell in July.

Former U.S. Attorney General William Barr slammed the Biden-Harris Department of Justice on Monday for releasing a letter from a man accused of trying to assassinate former President Donald Trump last weekend, saying that there was no purpose to doing it other than trying to increase incitement against the Republican nominee.
The DOJ <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/feds-discover-release-letter-written-by-would-be-trump-assassin">released</a> the letter in court documents as part of the prosecutor&#8217;s attempts to keep Ryan Routh locked up in pretrial detention. The judge denied Routh bond on Monday.
In the letter, which was written several months ago and was discovered in a box of items that Routh left with another person, Routh said: “This was an assassination attempt on Donald Trump but I failed you.”
“I tried my best and gave it all the gumption I could muster. It is up to you now to finish the job; and I will offer $150,000 to whomever can complete the job.”
Barr <a href="https://www.foxnews.com/politics/former-ag-barr-dumbfounded-dojs-decision-release-letter-trump-would-be-assassin">said</a> in a statement that he was stunned that the DOJ did not redact the letter in court documents.
&#8220;I was dumbfounded that the DOJ made public this morning the contents of the letter that, Ryan Routh, left with an acquaintance prior to the attempted assassination of former President Trump,&#8221; Barr said. &#8220;The letter calls on people to ‘finish the job’ of killing President Trump, attempts to rouse people in incendiary terms to do so, and offers $150,000 to anyone who succeeds. There was no apparent justification for releasing this information at this stage.&#8221;
He said that the DOJ had &#8220;more than enough evidence&#8221; to keep Routh locked up without needing to release the letter.
&#8220;Even if DOJ thought it important to provide the letter to the court, it could have redacted inflammatory material or arranged to have the letter submitted under seal,&#8221; he said. &#8220;It was rash to put out this letter in the midst of an election during which two attempts on the life of President Trump had been made.&#8221;
&#8220;It served no purpose other than to risk inciting further violence,&#8221; he added.
Routh had a criminal history that barred him from owning firearms and Federal Election Commission (FEC) records indicate that Routh donated exclusively to Democrats from 2019-2020 when he lived in Hawaii.
The small-dollar donations, sent through the Democrats’ fundraising platform ActBlue, were earmarked for Democrat presidential candidates Beto O’Rourke, Andrew Yang, Tom Steyer, Tulsi Gabbard, and Elizabeth Warren.

Barr made the remarks during an interview after leftist Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor wrote a widely criticized dissent in which she claimed that “the President is now a king above the law.”
&#8220;There’s absolute immunity when he’s acting directly under the constitution, carrying out a function under the constitution,&#8221; Barr explained during the interview. &#8220;There’s presumptive immunity when he performs an official act, and the government has the burden of showing that it can prosecute him for that without impairing the executive function. And finally, there’s no immunity for unofficial or private acts. And I think the — and the practical effect of this is that the district court is gonna do what it really should have done at the beginning, which is the government really should have had it do, which is do the analysis so that the facts are going up to the Supreme Court.”
He said that Sotomayor intentionally falsely portrayed the majority&#8217;s ruling opinion in the case.
“He has the right to go and tell the Department of Justice to investigate something, but an example used by Justice Sotomayor was, ‘Oh, then he can fabricate evidence, give the evidence to the department, and use that evidence to indict them.’ He doesn’t have authority to fabricate evidence,” Barr said. “That’s not carrying out an executive function. And the worst example, I think — the one that makes no sense whatsoever is that he can use SEAL Team 6 to kill a political opponent. The president has the authority to defend the country against foreign enemies — armed conflict and so forth. He has the authority to direct the justice system against criminals at home. He doesn’t have the authority to go and assassinate people.”
“So whether he uses the SEAL Team or a private hitman, it doesn’t matter,&#8221; he continued. &#8220;It’s not a carrying out of his authority. So all these horror stories really are false.&#8221;

&#8220;I said from the very start that this was an abomination,&#8221; Barr said during an interview. &#8220;And I actually was surprised that they went ahead with the case because there really was nothing there. There was no crime there and they never were able to really articulate it until after the defense rested its case. So I thought the whole thing was a travesty. I wasn&#8217;t surprised by the verdict because the way the case was conducted, there was never really any discipline on trying to make the prosecutor establish what the elements of the crime were and what evidence he had to do it. It was just assumed from the beginning that there was some kind of Federal Election Campaign violation, which there wasn&#8217;t.&#8221;
Barr warned that the case was damaging to political discourse in the U.S. and to the general health of the country.
&#8220;This case is going to be overruled because there are just multiple errors and violations of constitutional rights,&#8221; he said. &#8220;This will be eventually overruled after the election. But what happens if there&#8217;s a close election and Biden squeaks through and then the case is overruled? Half the country is going to feel that this was a stolen election. And, you know, again, this is a grave injustice and disservice to the country.&#8221;
He said that the gag order that the judge imposed on Trump should be lifted immediately and that Trump has every right to attack those who testified against him, the judge, the prosecution, and the case.

Barr made the remarks during a CNN interview with Kaitlan Collins when asked why he was supporting the former president as Trump.
&#8220;It&#8217;s my duty to pick the person who I think would do the least damage to the country. And I think Trump would do less damage than Biden,&#8221; Barr said. &#8220;I think all this stuff about a threat to democracy, I think the real threat to democracy is the progressive movement and the Biden administration.&#8221;
Barr said that the threat specifically was Biden&#8217;s &#8220;support for the progressive agenda.&#8221;
&#8220;Where are we losing our freedoms? How are our freedoms being constrained? They&#8217;re being constrained by the progressive government,&#8221; he said. &#8220;And democracy, especially from the Anglosphere of democracies, the Five Eyes and so forth, the threat&#8217;s never been from autocratic government on the Right, a right-wing strongman —&#8221;
Collins interrupted and asked Barr to give specifics of how Biden was threatening democracy.
&#8220;The threat to freedom and democracy has always been on the Left. It&#8217;s the collectivist, socialist agenda. And that is where we&#8217;re losing our freedom,&#8221; he said. &#8220;Parents are losing the freedom to control their children&#8217;s education. And people can&#8217;t speak their mind without losing their jobs, and things like that. This is worse than the McCarthy Era. Where is that coming from? It&#8217;s not coming from the Right.&#8221;

&#8220;Major changes are being made in our country without the democratic process, and they&#8217;re being made by bureaucrats, and these agencies,&#8221; Barr responded.
Collins again tried to downplay Barr&#8217;s examples by only highlighting &#8220;fights at the library over which books kids can read.&#8221;
&#8220;Don&#8217;t you think there should be some limits on what people are able to read at very young ages?&#8221; Barr asked.
Collins didn&#8217;t answer the question.

Barr said that the death toll in the U.S. every year from drug overdoses was higher than the number of Americans killed during the bloodiest year of World War II.
&#8220;The [People&#8217;s Republic of China] is the source of the fentanyl that is slaughtering Americans,&#8221; he said. &#8220;China produces nearly all the illicit fentanyl precursors used and the fentanyl introduced into the United States. These are the indispensable ingredients that drive the fentanyl trade.&#8221;
&#8220;There is no practical alternative for anywhere near the volume of precursors necessary to fuel this trade,&#8221; he continued. &#8220;Simply put, without China&#8217;s production and export of fentanyl and fentanyl precursors, there would be no fentanyl crisis in the United States and the mass slaughter would effectively stop.&#8221;

Barr said that there was evidence that China was intentionally engaged in this activity and that the U.S. should not expect China to operate in good faith or to have &#8220;goodwill&#8221; toward the U.S.
&#8220;The key point here is that the PRC and the CCP have the capacity to shut this down,&#8221; he said. &#8220;This is not taking place in the rain forests of Burma. This is taking place among a manageable number of companies in industrial parks in a modern surveillance state. The Chinese can push a button with a keystroke find somebody in one of their cities within less than a minute, know exactly where they are. They know what&#8217;s on the internet. He also said that since President Joe Biden met with Chinese dictator Xi Jinping that he has not been aware of any changes that China has made in its malicious behavior flooding the U.S. with fentanyl.

Former U.S. Attorney General <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/william-barr" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Bill Barr</a> suggested during a speech late last week that in a rematch between former President Donald Trump and President Joe Biden, he&#8217;ll back his former boss.
Barr, who has been critical of Trump since Trump left office in January 2021, made the remarks while speaking at a Forum Club of Southwest Florida lunch in Naples.
Barr has in the past held off on saying who he would support should Trump win the Republican Party presidential primary.
However, now that Trump is on the verge of officially wrapping up the primary, Barr said that even though Trump presents a risk to the country, Biden is far worse.
&#8220;Voting for Trump is playing Russian roulette with the country,&#8221; Barr said, according to a report from Axios. &#8220;Voting for Biden is outright national suicide.&#8221;
The former president faces numerous legal hurdles in between now and election day this November as he&#8217;s been indicted in four separate criminal cases and has experienced recent setbacks in civil courts that have cost him hundreds of millions of dollars — rulings that are being appealed.
Despite the challenges that he faces and the chaos that seemingly follows him, Trump maintains an advantage over Biden in the polls as voters overwhelming disapprove of how the president is handling many top issues facing the country, including the economy/inflation and the border/immigration.

Barr has been clear that he believes Trump is solely responsible for some of the trouble that he finds himself in, like in the federal case about his handling of classified material, while he has defended him in other criminal cases, like the hush money case from the Manhattan District Attorney&#8217;s Office and the two election cases.

Former Attorney General <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/william-barr" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Bill Barr</a> said over the weekend that former President <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/donald-trump" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Donald Trump</a> — should he win the Republican Party presidential primary and later become president again — &#8220;needs&#8221; to surround himself with people in a second term that are able to tell him &#8220;no.&#8221;
Barr <a href="https://www.foxnews.com/video/6343786905112">told</a> Fox News on Saturday that the former president, should he retake the White House, &#8220;needs people around him who will push back and help keep him on the straight and narrow.&#8221;
&#8220;During his first term, the main way that could be done is by pointing out to him how this would hurt his prospects for a second term,&#8221; Barr said. &#8220;Once he wins a second term, I don’t know — you know — what considerations can be used to push back against bad ideas.&#8221;
Barr said that he was concerned that if Trump were re-elected that he would not be interested in moving the country forward and instead focus on retribution.
&#8220;I’m worried that his style of governance, his continuing to pander to anger and frustration versus a constructive approach to solving our problems, is going to be chaotic and not accomplish very much,” Barr said. “He’ll be a lame duck president.”
Barr added that should Trump retake the White House, the next U.S. attorney general needs to be able to push back against the president&#8217;s wishes when they fall outside the Constitution.
“He has to be ready to say &#8216;no&#8217; and to resign,” Barr said. “Trump has made it plain that he’s going to respond to what he considers the left wings’ ‘no holds barred’ approach by fighting fire with fire. I think for people going into that administration. I think they have to be ready to oppose the abuse of government power.”

Former U.S. Attorney General William Barr slammed the Colorado Supreme Court&#8217;s ruling this week that former President Donald Trump was ineligible to be on the presidential primary ballot next year because of his actions on January 6, 2021, as they relate to the 14th Amendment.
The 4-3 ruling will be placed on hold pending appeal until January 4, the Court said in its ruling.
“A majority of the court holds that President Trump is disqualified from holding the office of President under Section Three of the Fourteenth Amendment of the United States Constitution,” the ruling said. “Because he is disqualified, it would be a wrongful act under the Election Code for the Colorado Secretary of State to list him as a candidate on the presidential primary ballot.”
Barr appeared on CNN&#8217;s &#8220;The Lead&#8221; with host Jake Tapper on Wednesday to give his analysis of the situation.
&#8220;As you know, I strongly oppose Donald Trump for the Republican nomination,&#8221; Barr said. &#8220;But I think this case is legally wrong and untenable. I think this kind of action of stretching the law, taking these hyper-aggressive positions to try to knock Trump out of the race are counterproductive. They backfire. As you know, he feeds on grievance, just like a fire feeds on oxygen. This is going to end up as a grievance that helps him.&#8221;
Barr said that he disagreed with the court&#8217;s ability to make the findings in their ruling because they were denying the former president due process.

&#8220;The core problem here is the denial of due process, to deprive somebody of the right to hold public office requires due process,&#8221; he said. &#8220;It requires an adjudication of two core issues. One, was there an insurrection? Did the public disturbance rise to the level of an insurrection? And second, what was the role of the individual there? Was it engagement? Did they do something to break their oath of office?&#8221;
&#8220;Those are complicated facts and this was denied due process,&#8221; he said. &#8220;It was a five-day hearing. There was no jury, it was before the judge. They were not able to subpoena witnesses and compel the attendance of witnesses. They relied on the hearings, the January 6 Committee hearings, which is mostly hearsay. There was no right to cross examine during those hearings and so forth.&#8221;
Barr said that if the U.S. Supreme Court decides to hear the case that &#8220;they&#8217;re going to slap it down very quickly, and I hope they do take it up quickly and slap it down, because otherwise, he could be left off the ballot in this primary.&#8221;
&#8220;Denial of due process is fatal here,&#8221; he said. &#8220;But as you&#8217;ve alluded to in your opening comments, the 14th Amendment is not something that can be applied willy-nilly by the states through sort of ad hoc proceedings. It was contemplated the federal government set up the enforcement mechanism. So, you have some standard, you know, what is the proof that&#8217;s required? What&#8217;s the procedure that&#8217;s required? And hopefully, some calibration of what exactly the insurrection is.&#8221;
Barr noted that while special counsel Jack Smith has charged the former president with numerous felonies, none of those charges involve insurrection or incitement.

Former Attorney General <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/william-barr" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Bill Barr</a> was asked Thursday to weigh in on the question of whether the investigations into his one-time boss, former President Donald Trump, constituted election interference.
&#8220;Now, you can argue about whether he should have been charged and so forth,&#8221; said Barr, &#8220;but the idea that this is interfering with the election is simply wrong.&#8221;
Barr, who has traded barbs with Trump on several occasions, but has <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/barr-defends-trump-over-fulton-county-indictment-predicts-federal-conviction-by-next-summer" target="_blank" rel="noopener">defended</a> him against the charges he faces in two of the four criminal cases against him, made the remarks during a Fox News interview with John Roberts when asked about &#8220;the legal trials and tribulations&#8221; of his former boss.
&#8220;I wanted to ask you about the legal trials and tribulations of your former boss now that Judge Tanya Chutkan has set March 4, the day before Super Tuesday, as the day for the president&#8217;s trial on the election to begin here in Washington, D.C.,&#8221; Roberts said. &#8220;I guess a lot of the momentum in the primary season will have already been established. But Super Tuesday is very important. And Trump supporters say this is all political. This is meant to disrupt the primary.&#8221;
Roberts then played a clip from Republican presidential candidate Chris Christie about whether the investigations constitute election interference.
&#8220;What interferes with the primary process is Donald Trump&#8217;s conduct, and his insistence on continuing to run for President of the United States, despite the fact that he&#8217;s been indicted in four different jurisdictions, and is out on bail in four different jurisdictions in this country, whether you believe the charges are just or not, they are here,&#8221; Christie, a vocal critic of Trump, said in the clip.

Barr responded by saying he thinks &#8220;the governor is right.&#8221;
&#8220;The basic principle in the criminal justice system is if a prominent person commits a crime, and is seeking office, that doesn&#8217;t give him immunity,&#8221; said Barr. &#8220;If there&#8217;s enough time to have it resolved before the election, it should be resolved. The idea that &#8216;oh, okay, well, I&#8217;m sorry, we&#8217;ll let you run in the election and then after we&#8217;ll address it,&#8217; that&#8217;s not a principle of the criminal [justice system].
Calling the idea of blanket immunity for candidates &#8220;silly,&#8221; Barr added, &#8220;Now, you can argue about whether he should have been charged and so forth, but the idea that this is interfering with the election is simply wrong.&#8221;

Former Attorney General <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/william-barr" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Bill Barr</a> defended his former boss, then-President Donald Trump, in response to the latest indictment out of Fulton County, Georgia, against the 77-year-old Republican presidential candidate, but predicts that he will be convicted in one of the two federal cases that he faces by next summer.
Barr made the remarks during an interview on Fox News Thursday afternoon after Trump was charged at the start of the week with 13 felonies in Georgia over his alleged efforts to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election.
&#8220;Well, I&#8217;m not happy with the Georgia case,&#8221; Barr said. &#8220;I think it&#8217;s much too sweeping, much too broad, excessive case that is — make it look like people are piling on and being excessive to Trump and feed the narrative that he&#8217;s being victimized here. And I also think there&#8217;s merit in the point that this is a case that I don&#8217;t think is going to be triable before the election. It&#8217;s just too sprawling.&#8221;
Barr also hit back again on the charges out of the Manhattan District Attorney&#8217;s Office, saying that it was a political hit job.
Barr said that he believes Trump will be convicted on some of the dozens of felony counts that he faces in the federal criminal investigations into his handling of classified material and his alleged actions to overturn the election.
&#8220;I think the federal cases are legitimate,&#8221; he said. &#8220;At the end of the day, at the core of this thing, he engaged, in the case of the documents, in outrageous behavior where anyone would be prosecuted. I don’t know of any attorney general who could walk away from it. He’s not being prosecuted for having the documents. He’s being prosecuted for obstruction &#8212; two egregious instances are alleged. So, I think that’s a very simple case, and that should be tried. If the judge is anywhere competent, that can be concluded before the summer, and the other case after the election, he, in my opinion, he did cross the line. It wasn’t just rough and tumble politics. He crossed the line.&#8221;
Barr said that if the decision was up to him, Trump would not go to jail and instead would pay a &#8220;very substantial penalty.&#8221;
Barr also added that the lawyers in the White House at the time after the election warned Trump &#8220;that if he kept on doing this, he would spend the rest of his life tangling with the criminal justice process.&#8221;
