A coalition of 14 Republican attorneys general warned <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/apple" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Apple</a> on Wednesday that its “discriminatory” entrepreneur programs excluding white and Asian men may be illegal.
Led by <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/west-virginia" target="_blank" rel="noopener">West Virginia</a> Attorney General Patrick Morrisey, the Republican officials sent a letter to Apple after it opened up applications last week for its “Entrepreneurship Camp” exclusively for minorities and women. The letter, addressed to Apple Senior Vice President Katherine Adams, says that the application stipulations may violate federal discrimination law.
“Apple should abandon this wrong-headed and exclusionary approach. As it stands, the program reflects a troubling fixation on race and sex — and looks to run afoul of anti-discrimination laws. While supporting up-and-coming developers may be a laudable goal, this harmful strategy is not the way to do it,” the attorneys general <a href="https://ago.wv.gov/Documents/Apple%20Letter.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">wrote</a>.
“And given how you sell your products in our States—and recruit developers, engineers, and others from our States, too—we cannot give tacit approval to your methods. Indeed, by hosting some of these camps remotely, we think Apple is effectively exporting discrimination to our States,” they added.
Joining Morrisey were the attorneys general of Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Idaho, Iowa, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, South Carolina, South Dakota, and Texas.

Apple faced backlash from conservatives last week after it <a href="https://developer.apple.com/news/?id=49500drc" target="_blank" rel="noopener">posted</a> its requirements for its “Apple Entrepreneur Camp” on August 13. According to the tech company, the camp “supports underrepresented founders and developers, and encourages the pipeline and longevity of these entrepreneurs in technology.”
The posting from the company said that all “female,* Black, Hispanic/Latinx, and Indigenous” developers were welcome to apply. The asterisks around “female” pointed to a note that said that Apple “believes that gender expression is a fundamental right. We welcome all women to apply to this program.”
The Republicans said that Apple was sowing social division through the program and pushing “intentional discrimination.”
“If Apple wants to open the doors to underrepresented persons, we can conceive of plenty of ways to do so without engaging in ugly race- and sex-based classifications. It could target those who don’t hail from elite educational institutions,” they wrote. “It could target those from lower socio-economic classes. It could target persons from parts of our country that haven’t yet experienced a boom in app development.”
In recent months, corporations around the country have faced backlash from customers for pushing woke policies and implementing DEI requirements.

A federal judge blocked the <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/biden-administration" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Biden administration</a>’s freeze on new liquid natural gas export permits on Monday after 16 Republican attorneys general sued the administration over the policy.
U.S. District Judge James Cain <a href="https://ago.wv.gov/Documents/LNG%20ruling.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">ruled</a> that the Biden administration had not followed precedent or considered national security impacts when it announced a ban on new natural gas permits earlier this year, issuing an injunction against the policy. Additionally, he ruled that the freeze would harm the states that sued after the policy was announced in January. 
The freeze meant that the Department of Energy would not issue any new permits while it updated the authorization process. According to the Biden administration, the freeze applied to countries that the United States did not have free trade agreements with, and “indefinitely” paused natural gas exports to those countries. 
“It appears that the DOE has failed to provide a more detailed justification for its halt of the approval process to conduct an update, especially considering that past precedent, which the applicants relied upon, allowed the approval of the applications to proceed when updates were made,” Cain wrote in his decision. 
“Also, it appears to this Court that Defendants did not realistically consider the cost/benefit analysis with regard to Plaintiff States’ concerns about the impact on national security, state revenues, employment opportunities, funding for schools and charities, and pollution allegedly caused by increased reliance on foreign energy sources,” the judge added. 
Cain&#8217;s injunction is in place as litigation against the freeze continues in federal court.
The states that sued were Louisiana, Alabama, Alaska, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kansas, Mississippi, Montana, Nebraska, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Texas, Utah, West Virginia, and Wyoming.
Cain said that the states, specifically Texas, West Virginia, and Louisiana, had shown that they would be harmed by the freeze, which would result in “loss of revenues, market share, and deprivation of a procedural right.”

“This is a big win for the country’s energy industry and the millions of jobs it supports against the attacks from the Biden administration to further its radical climate change agenda at the expense of our economy,” West Virginia Attorney General Patrick Morrisey said. “This administration’s Energy Department has no such authority to justify this ban— authority on matters like this lies with Congress and Congress alone.”
The White House disagreed with the judge’s ruling, and the Energy Department said it would assess it.
“We are disappointed in today’s ruling. We remain committed to informing our decisions with the best available economic and environmental analysis, underpinned by sound science,” White House spokesman Angelo Fernández Hernández <a href="https://thehill.com/policy/energy-environment/4750745-federal-court-lifts-biden-pause-gas-exports/mlite/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a>. “The United States remains the world’s largest exporter of LNG, and is currently on track to more than double existing capacity by the end of this decade.”

Widely considered a moderate in the Senate, Manchin broke with President Joe Biden and the Democratic Party on several issues, including certain provisions in the Inflation Reduction Act, Axios <a href="https://www.axios.com/2024/02/16/joe-manchin-2024-presidential-race">noted</a>. He also threatened to oppose Biden&#8217;s Environmental Protection Agency nominees in May 2023. He has <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/manchin-says-he-would-think-very-seriously-about-break-with-democratic-party">indicated</a> multiple times in the past that he was considering leaving the Democratic Party over its radical policies.

A 15-year-old girl from Bridgeport, West Virginia, is suing the Department of Education, claiming there were a series of incidents in which a boy who competed against her and other girls in track and field events made rape threats against her.
According to the girl’s <a href="https://adfmedialegalfiles.blob.core.windows.net/files/TennesseeDeclarationOfAC.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">statement</a>, she is currently a ninth-grade student at Bridgeport High School (BHS) who competes in discus, shot put, and the 4 x 100 relay. In sixth through eighth grade, she attended Bridgeport Middle School (BMS), where in seventh grade (the 2021–22 school year), she competed in the 100-meter dash, pole vault, shot put, and discus, and sometimes competed in the 200-meter dash and relay events.
“To my surprise, another BMS student named B.P.J. joined the girls’ track and field team,” she noted. “B.P.J. is almost two years younger than me, and one year behind me in school. Because I know B.P.J.’s older brother from school, I knew at the beginning of the 2021–22 school year that B.P.J. is a male who identifies as a girl.”
She recalled that initially, she was better than the boy in shot put and discus, but by the end of seventh grade, he threw about the same distance in shot put: around 18–20 feet. “In discus, I typically beat B.P.J.: I threw around 40 feet while B.P.J. threw closer to 30 feet. But in the last meet of the 2021–22 season, B.P.J. suddenly threw almost 20 feet farther: 49’ 7”,” she stated.
“By the next school year (2022–23), I could tell that B.P.J. had grown a lot. B.P.J. got taller and threw farther. B.P.J. got a deeper and more masculine voice,” she wrote. In March 2023, B.P.J. finished ahead of the girl at the Connect Bridgeport Invitational in shot put and in discus. In April, B.P.J. beat her at the Pioneer MS Invitational in discus. Later in April, B.P.J. beat her at the Bobcat MS meet in shot put and discus.
“B.P.J.’s athletic records show that B.P.J. beat over 50 different female athletes in the 2021–22 school year, displacing several of the female athletes more than once. These records show that B.P.J. beat over 100 different female athletes in the 2022–23 school year, displacing them almost 300 times. I also lost to B.P.J. on four separate occasions that school year,” the lawsuit states.

“B.P.J. made several offensive and inappropriate sexual comments to me,” she recalled. “At first, it did not occur often, and I tried my best to ignore it. But during my final year of middle school, B.P.J. made inappropriate sexual comments a lot more often; it increased throughout that year; and the comments became much more aggressive, vile, and disturbing. Sometimes B.P.J.’s comments were just annoying, like commenting that I have a ‘nice butt.’ But other times, I felt really embarrassed, and I didn’t want to repeat the gross things B.P.J. said to me. During the end of that year, about two to three times per week, B.P.J. would look at me and say ‘suck my d***.’ There were usually other girls around who heard this. I heard B.P.J. say the same thing to my other teammates, too.”
“B.P.J. made other more explicit sexual statements that felt threatening to me,” she continued. “At times, B.P.J. told me quietly &#8216;I&#8217;m gonna stick my d*** into your p****.’ And B.P.J. sometimes added ‘and in your a**’ as well. &#8230; B.P.J. made these vulgar comments towards me in the locker room, on the track, and in the throwing pit for discus and shotput.”
“Most of the time, B.P.J. made these sexual comments at girls’ track practice. Our team walked from Bridgeport Middle School to the High School for track practice, where we would train on the high school track,” she stated. “B.P.J. often popped up beside me as we walked and said these things. Other times, B.P.J. made comments as our team was sitting in the endzone waiting for coaches to get practice going. At least one time, it happened in the girls’ locker room.”
“I reported B.P.J.’s sexual comments to my coach and middle school administrators. Initially, the administrators told me that they were investigating, but we never heard back, and nothing changed. From what I saw, B.P.J. got very little or no punishment for saying things that no other student would get away with,” she concluded.
“I also worry about the little 6th grade girls who are on the same team as B.P.J. right now,” she wrote. “If I were in 6th grade and had to deal with sexual comments from a biological male two years older than me who was changing in the same locker room as me, I wouldn’t even play sports. It wouldn’t be worth it. My younger sister will be a freshman in high school when B.P.J is a senior. She is a good athlete, but she is very shy, and I can’t imagine how she would feel if B.P.J. said those sexual comments to her while they were competing in sports or changing in the locker room. I do not want that to happen.”
Rachel Rouleau of the Alliance Defending Freedom, which is representing the girl, stated:

Girl Sues Biden’s Education Department After Male Who Competed Against Her Allegedly Made Rape Threats With No Punishment

<a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/west-virginia" target="_blank" rel="noopener">West Virginia</a> will no longer be investing money in Chinese-based companies through its higher education savings investment program, according to Republican State Treasurer Riley Moore.
Moore <a href="https://wvtreasury.com/About-The-Office/Press-Releases/ID/612/Treasurer-Moore-Announces-SMART529-Board-Votes-to-Drop-China-Investments-from-Select-Plan-Emerging-Markets-Portfolio" target="_blank" rel="noopener">announced</a> Wednesday that the state would be designating dollars from the investment program, known as SMART529, into a fund that wouldn’t back Chinese-based companies. The previous fund included investments in Chinese companies through an emerging markets fund.
“We have a fiduciary duty to act in the best financial interests of SMART529 plan participants, and we believe excluding Chinese emerging market investments from our Select Plan portfolio will help maximize returns while reducing exposure to the potential regulatory and geopolitical risks that come with investing in companies based in China,” Moore said. “I’m grateful to the Board members for carefully considering this recommendation to reduce exposure to these more risky Chinese investment options.”
Under the former investment plan, Chinese companies could be qualified for some of the $40 million SMART529 dollars that were invested in emerging markets. Moore said the decision to shift investments away from China came after a “lengthy period of study” showed that keeping investment in China was risky. He began looking at the move in late 2021.
“This decision is in the best long-term financial interests of those individuals who choose to invest in a SMART529 Select Plan and the children whose educational future benefits from these funds,” he said.
Moore had investment consultant company NEPC create a research report for him on potential risks from partnering with Chinese companies.
“China’s domestic policies can create periods of heightened volatility and it is possible that ongoing tensions could increase and negatively impact Chinese stocks,” NEPC told the West Virginia board that oversees the state&#8217;s college funding programs.

&#8220;Excluding Chinese investments will reduce American funding of our greatest adversary, and protect participants from China&#8217;s volatile economy,” said Michael Lucci, the group&#8217;s CEO. “More states should look to West Virginia&#8217;s example and examine their own investment portfolios.”
“State leaders must take immediate action to protect their education systems, which includes divesting from adversaries, reviewing and canceling gifts and contracts from adversaries, and generally cutting adversary government influence on American campuses,” Lucci added.

On Tuesday, the 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals <a href="https://abcnews.go.com/US/wireStory/federal-appeals-court-overturns-west-virginia-transgender-sports-109309437">overturned</a> a West Virginia law that barred biological boys from participating in girls’ sports.
The court claimed that HB 3293, passed in 2021, violated Title IX, which bars sex-based discrimination in schools. The case revolved around Becky Pepper Jackson, a 13-year-old boy who has been taking puberty-blocking medication and who was barred by the state from continuing to be a member of the middle school girls’ cross country and track team.
“I will keep fighting to safeguard Title IX. We must keep working to protect women&#8217;s sports so that women&#8217;s safety is secured and girls have a truly fair playing field,&#8221; Republican West Virginia Attorney General Patrick Morrisey said after the decision was made. “We know the law is correct and will use every available tool to defend it.”
“Women and young girls deserve to compete on a level playing field,” Alliance Defending Freedom Legal Counsel Rachel Rouleau <a href="https://adfmedia.org/case/bpj-v-west-virginia-state-board-education">stated</a>. “The court’s decision undermines equal opportunities and contradicts both biological reality and common sense. Title IX was designed to provide women with fair competition, and West Virginia’s women’s sports law does the same. Across the country, women and girls are unjustly losing medals, podium spots, public recognition, and the opportunity to compete when males take their places. While everyone knows that men competing against women creates huge disadvantages and safety concerns, the 4th Circuit fell prey to activists who are pushing an ideology over what is just for women and girls. We are considering all legal options to protect women’s sports, including an appeal of this decision.”

The court ruled 2-1 to overturn the West Virginia law. The dissenting judge, G. Steven Agee, wrote that the opinion “turns Title IX on its head and reverses the monumental work Title IX has done to promote girls’ sports from its inception &#8230; B.P.J. displaced at least one hundred biological girls at track-and-field events and pushed multiple girls out of the top ten. Similarly, by making the conference championships in two events (something reserved for the top three girls on a team), B.P.J. took away at least two biological girls’ opportunities to participate in the conference championships. And this was in a single season. Thanks to the new-found rubric of today’s majority opinion, such displacement will become commonplace.”

A group of 16 Republican attorneys general told Attorney General <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/merrick-garland" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Merrick Garland</a> on Wednesday that he was sowing “distrust” in the American electoral system with his comments criticizing state election integrity laws.
Led by Indiana AG Todd Rokita and West Virginia AG Patrick Morrisey, the Republican officials sent a <a href="https://content.govdelivery.com/attachments/INAG/2024/04/10/file_attachments/2843216/FINAL%20Garland%20Election%20Letter.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">letter</a> to Garland over <a href="https://www.justice.gov/opa/speech/attorney-general-merrick-b-garland-deliver-remarks-bloody-sunday-tabernacle-baptist" target="_blank" rel="noopener">comments</a> he made in Alabama discussing the Justice Department&#8217;s efforts to challenge Red state laws related to voter identification requirements and safeguards on vote-by-mail initiatives.
“The Biden administration is weaponizing the U.S. Department of Justice against the states,” Rokita said in a statement. “These actions pose a direct threat to democracy, election integrity and the rule of law. We will stand up and defend our rightful authority within the framework of American federalism.”
The letter was referring to a speech Garland gave at the Tabernacle Baptist Church in Selma on March 3. At the church, Garland said the DOJ was “challenging efforts by states and jurisdictions to implement discriminatory, burdensome, and unnecessary restrictions on access to the ballot, including those related to mail-in-voting, the use of drop boxes, and voter ID requirements.”
According to the Republicans, these comments threatened the principles of federalism and the separation of powers, as well as the rule of law. Joining Indiana and West Virginia were the attorneys general of Alaska, Georgia, Idaho, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, New Hampshire, South Carolina, Texas, and Utah.

“By using the DOJ against the states, you continue to sow the seeds of distrust among the American electorate,” the officials said. “The DOJ has no authority to dictate to the states in matters that concern their sovereign right to ensure safe, secure, and free elections. Although we do not know exactly the strategy the DOJ intends to take with its numerous election attorneys, we intend to vigorously defend our election laws. We will not allow intimidation and fear mongering to supersede the will of the people.”
The Republicans argued that the DOJ’s criticism of voter ID laws didn’t make sense because people were required to provide IDs for voting, driving a car, purchasing alcohol, or boarding an airplane. The letter also pointed to a bipartisan report that came out in 2005 that found that absentee voting could open up the door for fraud, saying that Garland’s criticism of state laws tightening up scrutiny of mail-in-voting was unfounded. 
As the DOJ plans to challenge state election laws ahead of the 2024 election, the RNC has filed several suits to make Democratic secretaries of state in Michigan and Nevada clean up their voter rolls and enforce voter ID laws.

Visitors to <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/west-virginia">West Virginia</a> may soon be greeted by a new state welcome sign that makes clear the Mountain State’s stance on illegal immigration.
Moore Capito, a Republican candidate for West Virginia governor, says the reaction to a campaign ad that featured the state’s traditional welcome sign with an added “Sanctuary Cities: 0” below the population counter was so positive that he wants to make it a reality.
“Since that ad began running, I’ve been getting great feedback from voters who really like the idea of adding a spot below our welcome signs that highlight our commitment to the rule of law by publicly stating we have zero sanctuary cities,” Capito told The Daily Wire. “It’s a commitment to common sense and public safety that I think is worthwhile. As Governor, I’d like to make it a reality.”
While neighboring Maryland and Pennsylvania have a <a href="https://cis.org/Map-Sanctuary-Cities-Counties-and-States" target="_blank" rel="noopener">host</a> of sanctuary counties, Capito said that West Virginia would never let that happen, calling their very existence a &#8220;slap in the face.&#8221;
“The idea of so-called ‘sanctuary cities’ – where the rule of law is disregarded – is a slap in the face to our democracy,” he told The Daily Wire. “Look at liberal bastions like California and New York. Their sanctuary status tells people it’s fine to break the law. It’s a message that encourages crime. How’s that going for them?”

In the ad, Capito highlighted his work in the state legislature last year to help pass a <a href="https://legiscan.com/WV/text/HB2008/id/2747701" target="_blank" rel="noopener">measure</a> that effectively bans sanctuary cities by requiring all local entities to cooperate with the enforcement of immigration laws. Capito, who stepped down from the legislature in December to campaign for governor, was House Judiciary chair when the anti-sanctuary city measure made it through both chambers and was <a href="https://www.theintelligencer.net/news/top-headlines/2023/04/capito-co-sponsoring-bill-to-ban-sanctuary-cities/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">signed</a> by Republican Governor Jim Justice.
Capito said that the total number of illegal immigrants who have entered under President Joe Biden is more than three times the population of West Virginia. He said under his leadership the state would take action to make sure that illegal immigrants do not make their way into West Virginia.
“We do things differently in West Virginia,” Capito said. “We support law enforcement. Since Biden refused to secure our southern border, we took legislative action to protect public safety by banning sanctuary cities.&#8221;

Other Republican gubernatorial candidates for West Virginia include Attorney General Patrick Morrissey, businessman Chris Miller, and Secretary of State Mac Warner. The West Virginia primary is scheduled for May 14.

Sen. <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/joe-manchin" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Joe Manchin</a> (D-WV) announced on Tuesday that his wife, Gayle, was hospitalized after a car accident in Alabama this week.
The crash took place on Monday as Gayle, who is co-chairwoman of the Appalachian Regional Commission (ARC), travelled with her colleague Guy Land from the airport to a hotel in Birmingham for an ARC event that was planned for Tuesday, the lawmaker said in a <a href="https://www.manchin.senate.gov/newsroom/press-releases/manchin-issues-personal-statement" target="_blank" rel="noopener">statement</a>.
&#8220;Both were admitted to UAB Hospital and are receiving excellent care,&#8221; Sen. Manchin said. &#8220;She remains in stable condition but will stay there for a couple of days for precautionary measures. We want to thank the first responders who answered the call and were first on-site to provide assistance and support.&#8221;
Gayle Manchin, <a href="https://people.com/joe-manchin-wife-gayle-hospitalized-car-crash-8553097" target="_blank" rel="noopener">who is in her mid-70s</a>, was first lady of West Virginia when her husband served as governor from 2005 to 2010. She worked as an educator who, among other roles, <a href="https://www.arc.gov/staff/federal-co-chair-gayle-conelly-manchin/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">served</a> as the state&#8217;s secretary of education and arts for a time.
In 2021, President Joe Biden <a href="https://apnews.com/article/joe-manchin-wife-joe-biden-appointment-5acad530bb9ff8046ab60e756124010c" target="_blank" rel="noopener">nominated</a> Gayle Manchin to serve on the ARC, which is an <a href="https://arc.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">&#8220;economic development partnership&#8221;</a> entity of the federal government and 13 state governments around the Appalachian region, and she was <a href="https://thehill.com/regulation/administration/551078-gayle-manchin-approved-by-senate-to-serve-on-appalachian-board/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">approved</a> by the Senate later that year.
Joe Manchin, who has served in the Senate since 2010, <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/joe-manchin-announces-he-will-not-seek-re-election-to-senate-in-2024" target="_blank" rel="noopener">announced</a> last year that he would not seek re-election in 2024, but the Democrat kept the door open to a potential run for the White House.
The senator&#8217;s <a href="https://www.manchin.senate.gov/about" target="_blank" rel="noopener">biography page</a> says he has been married to Gayle for more than five decades and they have three children together, as well as several grandchildren.

Legislators in West Virginia are considering a bill that would permit libraries to be prosecuted for carrying books deemed obscene.
House bill 4654, which the West Virginia House Judiciary Committee was scheduled to consider Monday afternoon, was instead put before a public hearing on Wednesday. It would <a href="https://www.wvlegislature.gov/Bill_Status/bills_history.cfm?year=2024&amp;sessiontype=RS&amp;input=4654" target="_blank" rel="noopener">remove</a> the exclusions that had previously applied to schools, public libraries, and museums as to whether they could be prosecuted for displaying obscene matter to a minor even when the child was accompanied by a parent/guardian.
“State Code defines obscene matter as anything an average person believes depicts or describes sexually explicit conduct, nudity, sex or certain bodily functions; or anything a reasonable person would find lacks serious literary, artistic, political or scientific value,” the Parkersburg News and Sentinel <a href="https://www.newsandsentinel.com/news/local-news/2024/01/a-war-over-words-west-virginia-schools-libraries-could-face-charges-for-books-deemed-controversial/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reported</a>. “According to State Code 61-8A-2, any adult who knowingly and intentionally displays obscene matter to a minor could be charged with a felony, fined up to $25,000 and face up to five years in prison if convicted.”
On Wednesday, supporters of the bill read excerpts from books they considered obscene, including “Let’s Talk About It” and &#8220;Me, Earl and the Dying Girl.”
The sponsor of the bill, Brandon Steele, R-Raleigh, <a href="https://wchstv.com/news/local/public-weighs-in-on-bill-that-would-criminally-charge-libraries-for-obscene-material" target="_blank" rel="noopener">argued</a>, “Quit creating the safe haven that allows our children to be presented material that would be unlawful felonious conduct outside of the walls of that library or school.” He said he wanted to move the bill through the House rapidly so it could be considered by the Senate.
Carol Miley, a retired Kanawha County librarian, added, “I urge you to pass this bill. This is not about banning books. It’s about protecting our minor students from being abused. I call it mind rape or word pornography.”
“We have a responsibility to protect our children; a God-given responsibility,” Minister Daniel Curry of the Camden Avenue Church of Christ in Parkersburg <a href="https://www.newsandsentinel.com/news/local-news/2024/01/a-war-over-words-west-virginia-schools-libraries-could-face-charges-for-books-deemed-controversial/">stated</a>. “I would ask what is the need for obscene matter in schools and libraries?”

West Virginia Democratic Senator Joe Machin said Wednesday that he would &#8220;absolutely&#8221; consider running for U.S. president, less than a week after <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/joe-manchin-announces-he-will-not-seek-re-election-to-senate-in-2024" target="_blank" rel="noopener">announcing</a> his upcoming departure from Congress next year.
Manchin, who has lamented about the level of nationwide division over the last several months and expressed woes over the Democratic Party, <a href="https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/2024-election/sen-joe-manchin-says-absolutely-consider-presidential-run-rcna125368" target="_blank" rel="noopener">told</a> NBC he would consider joining the race for the White House if that meant helping the United States.
&#8220;Every American should consider it if they&#8217;re in a position to help save the country,&#8221; Manchin said.
Manchin has served in public office in West Virginia since the early 1980s, including as governor, a member of the House of Delegates, and the state Senate. Throughout his political career, he has often called himself a &#8220;centrist, moderate, conservative Democrat.&#8221;
In recent months, however, Manchin revealed he would &#8220;think very seriously&#8221; about a break with the Democratic Party, noting that the political climate across the U.S. has left commonsense Americans &#8220;politically homeless.&#8221;
Amid the chaos, Manchin has since hinted at being open to launching a third-party campaign for the White House in 2024 — and there has been speculation that he and former Utah Republican Governor John Huntsman could team up after they appeared together for a No Labels town hall in July.
No Labels released a statement on Thursday praising Manchin as a &#8220;great leader&#8221; in the Senate and an ally. The group also said it is still &#8220;gathering input&#8221; for a possible &#8220;Unity&#8221; presidential ticket and plans to decide by early 2024.
But before making the announcement official, the West Virginia congressman noted he would first explore whether voters would consider a &#8220;moderate&#8221; candidate.
&#8220;I&#8217;m going to do everything in my power to mobilize that moderate, sensible, commonsense middle,&#8221; he said during the NBC interview on Wednesday, also mentioning his fear about a potential second Trump administration.
&#8220;I&#8217;m totally, absolutely scared to death that Donald Trump would become president again,&#8221; he said. &#8220;I think we will lose democracy as we know it.&#8221;
Manchin&#8217;s comments come after making &#8220;one of the toughest decisions&#8221; of his life last week when he announced he would not seek re-election to the Senate in 2024, leaving the door open to a potential run for the White House.

Maryland Democratic Governor Wes Moore — a rising star and top surrogate for President Biden&#8217;s re-election effort — <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/rising-dem-star-urges-manchin-not-to-mar-his-legacy-with-biden-challenge" target="_blank" rel="noopener">implored</a> Manchin earlier this week not to challenge Biden in the 2024 election.
Beyond the GOP primary, other candidates are campaigning for a shot at the presidency. They include Robert F. Kennedy Jr., left-wing activist Cornel West — both running as independents — and Green Party candidate Jill Stein.

With Manchin bowing out, Republicans could be well on their way to picking up a seat in the Senate — which is narrowly controlled by the Democrats.
Manchin faced a <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/west-virginia-gop-governor-set-to-launch-senate-campaign-for-joe-manchins-seat-reports">strong challenger</a> in Republican West Virginia Governor Jim Justice, who in a <a href="https://thehill.com/homenews/senate/4254039-manchin-justice-west-virginia-senate-poll/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">hypothetical face-off</a> defeated the incumbent by 13 points, according to an Emerson College survey in early October. Justice still faces a GOP primary in which Rep. Alex Mooney (R-WV) is also running.
Over the past several months, Manchin has bemoaned the level of division across the United States that has left &#8220;common-sense&#8221; people &#8220;<a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/manchin-says-u-s-not-designed-to-be-this-divided-people-are-politically-homeless">politically homeless</a>.&#8221; In August, he said he would <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/manchin-says-he-would-think-very-seriously-about-break-with-democratic-party" target="_blank" rel="noopener">&#8220;think very seriously&#8221;</a> about a break with the Democratic Party.
