A judge sentenced the <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/waukesha" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Waukesha</a> Christmas killer to life in prison without parole Wednesday for killing six people and injuring dozens more after he drove his SUV into a crowd at the Waukesha Christmas parade in the Wisconsin suburb last year.
Waukesha County Circuit Judge Jennifer Dorow sentenced the 40-year-old man, who will not be named per Daily Wire policy, on 76 charges, including six counts of first-degree intentional homicide and 61 counts of reckless endangerment, with each homicide count carrying a mandatory life sentence.
The six victims were identified as Jackson Sparks, 8; Tamara Durand, 52; Jane Kulich, 52; LeAnna Owen, 71; Virginia Sorenson, 79; and Wilhelm Hospel, 81.
&#8220;You have absolutely no remorse for anything that you do,&#8221; Dorrow said, according to <a href="https://apnews.com/article/wisconsin-milwaukee-homicide-sentencing-treatment-of-prisoners-4b7164afac40dda0acad30a19e3b9ea6" target="_blank" rel="noopener">The Associated Press</a>. &#8220;You have no empathy for anyone … no one is safe from you.&#8221;
The defendant drove his red Ford Escape into the crowd gathered to watch Waukesha&#8217;s annual Christmas parade on November 21, 2021. According to the police, the alleged attacker used a &#8220;zigzagging motion&#8221; as he drove through the crowd, seemingly indicating an intentional targeting of people.
In a criminal complaint, CNN <a href="https://www.cnn.com/2022/11/16/us/darrell-brooks-waukesha-sentencing/index.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reports</a> that an officer said the defendant looked &#8220;directly at him, and it appeared he had no emotion on his face&#8221; when he stepped in front of the vehicle, ordering him to stop.
The defendant apologized to the victims and the Waukesha community when he spoke for more than two hours in court.
&#8220;I want you to know that not only am I sorry for what happened — I&#8217;m sorry that you could not see what&#8217;s truly in my heart,&#8221; he said, according to The Associated Press. &#8220;That you cannot see the remorse that I have.&#8221;
The defendant told the judge he grew up poor, hungry, and without a father in rat and bug-infested apartment buildings while struggling with mental health issues since he was young, and experienced physical abuse. His mother and grandmother asked the judge to place him in a mental institution rather than prison, claiming he has been bipolar since he was 12 years old.
Dorrow cited passages and opinions from four mental health evaluations from the defendant&#8217;s doctors and concluded &#8220;that mental health issues did not cause him to do what he did&#8221; during the parade, &#8220;and frankly did not play a role.&#8221;
Waukesha County District Attorney Susan Opper told the judge that the defendant deserves the &#8220;absolute maximum sentence on all counts, consecutive.&#8221;
&#8220;You saw the videos,&#8221; Opper said, according to CNN. &#8220;This wasn&#8217;t him plowing into one large group of fifty people at one time and hitting them — it was linear. He hit one, kept going. Hit two, kept going. Hit three, kept going. All the way down the street. That&#8217;s consecutive sentences, your honor.&#8221;
Opper added the defendant&#8217;s actions were &#8220;intentional, willful, volitional conduct that warrants consecutive sentences stacked one on top of the other just as he stacked victims up as he drove down the road in complete disregard for any other person whatsoever.&#8221;
The Associated Press reports Chris Owen, whose mother was among those killed in the attack, told the defendant, &#8220;All I ask is you rot, and you rot slow.&#8221;
According to CNN, Alisha Kulich, the daughter of 52-year-old Jane Kulich, who was killed attending the parade, said her mother &#8220;won&#8217;t get to see me say my vows or get married to the love of my life.&#8221;
&#8220;And she won&#8217;t ever get to see my future kids, and they won&#8217;t know what it&#8217;s like to have a grandma who spoils them,&#8221; Kulich said.

A jury has found a Wisconsin man guilty of ramming his vehicle into the crowd at the Waukesha Christmas parade in Wisconsin on November 21, 2021.
The defendant, who will not be named per Daily Wire policy, was found guilty on all 76 charges related to the attack that killed six and injured 62 more. The defendant originally faced 83 charges, but Waukesha County Judge Jennifer Dorow dropped six of those counts before the trial began, Fox 6 <a href="https://www.fox6now.com/news/darrell-brooks-verdict-waukesha-christmas-parade-trial">reported</a>. An additional count was later dismissed as well, leaving 76 charges against the defendant, including six counts of first-degree intentional homicide.
The trial has been marked by numerous outbursts from the defendant, including constantly interrupting the judge, removing his shirt during the trial livestream, taking off his shoe and threatening to throw it when officers were escorting him, and refusing to wear a suit as he had done so during previous hearings. Earlier this month, the defendant, who is defending himself, argued with a witness by claiming he <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/waukesha-christmas-parade-crash-suspect-says-he-no-longer-identifies-by-his-name">no longer identified by his name</a>.
The defendant was questioning Waukesha Police Detective Thomas Casey, who was at the parade and tried to stop the vehicle that crashed into the crowd. During his questioning, the defendant asked Casey to describe a “disturbance” he heard just before the attack, which resulted in the following exchange:

The outlets were blasted online, accused of attempting to garner sympathy for a mass murderer, after several posted headlines highlighting the defendant&#8217;s &#8220;tearful opening statement.&#8221; The suspect, who is defending himself in court, reportedly broke down in tears during his <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/two-sides-to-every-story-alleged-waukesha-christmas-parade-killer-complains-people-dont-see-him-clearly" target="_blank" rel="noopener">opening statement</a>, another example of erratic and delusional behavior he has exhibited throughout his court proceedings.
A Twitter account called &#8220;End Wokeness&#8221; posted screenshots of headlines from national news outlets, all of which used the same phrase to describe the defendant&#8217;s opening statement: &#8220;Wisconsin Christmas parade defendant gives tearful opening statement: &#8216;2 sides to every story,’” a USA Today headline reads.&#8221;Wisconsin parade suspect gives tearful opening statement,&#8221; headlines from the Associated Press, CBS News, and ABC News all read.

Twitter users slammed the outlets, accusing them of trying to garner sympathy for the alleged killer.
&#8220;Apparently, &#8216;tearful opening statement&#8217; is today’s Universal Mainstream Media tagline for mass murderer sympathy,&#8221; one user wrote on Twitter.
“‘Tearful opening&#8217; He ran over children with a car,&#8221; wrote another.
&#8220;@AP @MSNBC @abcnews @CBSNews this is how we punish a person who killed unarmed elderly, children, and other citizens?! #shame,&#8221; another user replied.
&#8220;How do you sleep at night?&#8221; a user questioned. &#8220;We’re supposed to feel sorry for this mass murderer?? You all are sick in the head. @AP @abcnews @CBSNews.&#8221;
&#8220;This headline is gross and he’s a cold blooded murder,&#8221; said another user. &#8220;He knew what he was doing and the harm he was inflicting.&#8221;
The popular Twitter account Defiant L&#8217;s posted a photo comparing the Waukesha headline with another USA Today headline attacking Kyle Rittenhouse for crying on the witness stand at his trial.

The social media backlash comes even as the legacy media has previously downplayed the Waukesha attack. In the immediate aftermath of the attack in 2021, an Associated Press headline read: “Child is 6th death in Waukesha parade crash; suspect charged&#8221;; a tweet from CBS News labeled the attack “deadly Christmas parade crash.” Other outlets referred to the attack as a &#8220;tragedy&#8221; or a &#8220;crash.&#8221; But, as The Daily Wire <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/media-calls-waukesha-fatal-car-ramming-a-crash-they-called-2017-charlottesville-car-ramming-an-attack" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reported</a> at the time, those outlets referred to the 2017 car ramming in Charlottesville, Virginia, as a &#8220;car attack.&#8221;
The suspect&#8217;s outburst is just the latest in a series of erratic behaviors and antics he has engaged in during his trial proceedings.
He has <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/alleged-waukesha-christmas-parade-killer-mocks-victims-in-court-while-demanding-that-case-be-dismissed" target="_blank" rel="noopener">mocked the victims</a> of the attack and demanded that the charges against him be dropped because the victims were not present to accuse him; he has repeatedly yelled at and argued with the trial judge; and he has claimed that he <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/waukesha-christmas-parade-crash-suspect-says-he-no-longer-identifies-by-his-name" target="_blank" rel="noopener">does not identify</a> by his given name, nor does he know anybody by that name. On Friday, the judge was forced to call a recess after he <a href="https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation/2022/10/21/darrell-brooks-parade-trial-judge-says-she-scared-after-outburst/10565977002/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">stared her down</a> in court. &#8220;This man right now is having a stare-down with me,&#8221; the judge said. &#8220;It&#8217;s very disrespectful. He pounded his fist. Frankly, it makes me scared.&#8221;

The suspect, who already had fought with Judge Jennifer Dorow, removed his shirt while turning his back to the proceedings, and yelled at Dorow, “Don&#8217;t nobody tell me what to do!” made his complaint in his opening statement to the jury.
“I would just like to first say that I want to bring to remembering something that I think everyone in this room has been taught, pretty much as far back as we can remember, is that there&#8217;s always two sides to every story,” he declared. The suspect reportedly <a href="https://www.cbsnews.com/news/darrell-brooks-waukesha-parade-crash-71-charges/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">kept driving</a> with his head out the window even as bodies on the windshield blocked his view.
“And for so long now, roughly a year, there&#8217;s only truly been one side told of this story,” he continued. “And I&#8217;ve sat back and watched from countless narratives that&#8217;s been put out there, the way this incident has been portrayed at times. And finally, everyone getting a chance to get the full story.”
“You won&#8217;t hear me try to argue facts. The fact is this incident was tragic, very tragic. That’s not lost on me,” the suspect stated. “What I’m confident that the evidence will show is that this incident was not planned. This incident was not intentional. This incident was never even thought about.”
“It’s easy to look at the magnitude of something like this and form opinions,” he declared. “I think it’s easy to disregard a lot of factors. &#8230; It’s easy to forget the other side of the coin. &#8230; I just want you to keep in mind the power that you have.&#8221;
“There’s been a lot of words thrown out there about the alleged — lot of speculation, lot of ridicule,” he complained. “Words like ‘demon.’ Words like ‘monster.’ I know a lot of the time I’ve been before you you&#8217;ve seen me with this mask on. I’ve had my reasons for that, but I feel now is the time that it’s important that you see me for who I am. No mask. For who I am. I think this is the moment for that.”

The man on trial for allegedly killing six people and injuring 62 others during a Christmas parade in Waukesha, Wisconsin, says he no longer identifies by his name – the latest in a string of odd remarks and disruptions he has made in court.
The 40-year-old man, who is not being named by The Daily Wire, is representing himself after he fired his attorneys just before the trial started. On Monday, the defendant began by questioning Waukesha Police Detective Thomas Casey, who was at the parade and tried to stop the vehicle that crashed into the crowd. During his questioning, the defendant asked Casey to describe a “disturbance” he heard just before the attack, which resulted in the following exchange:

This isn’t the first time the defendant has acted out in court – or even the first time he has denied his own name. In the days leading up to the trial, the defendant told the judge he did not recognize his name in court documents, WHBL <a href="https://whbl.com/2022/10/10/brooks-trial-week-two-begins-with-apology-odd-claim/">reported</a>.

Even before denying his own name, the defendant stood up in court and apologized for his previous disruptions, which required him to be removed from the court every previous day of the trial.
“I want to stand up as a man and tell the whole court and you, your Honor, I want to apologize to the bailiffs that I want to apologize for my actions. Like I said, that&#8217;s not how I was raised. I come from a Christian background. My mother did not raise me that way,” the defendant said.
Previous disruptions include constantly interrupting the judge, removing his shirt during the trial livestream, taking off his shoe and threatening to throw it when officers were escorting him, and refusing to wear a suit as he had done during previous hearings.

Waukesha Christmas Parade Crash Suspect Says He No Longer Identifies By His Name

When Morgan Geyser was 12 years old, she and her friend Anissa Weier lured their sixth-grade classmate, Payton Leutner, to a park in Waukesha, Wisconsin, and stabbed her. Now, Geyser is asking the court to release her from a mental health facility.
The girls were having a sleepover prior to traveling to the park on that late spring day in 2014. Once there, Geyser stabbed Leutner 19 times while Weier encouraged her. Geyser and Weier left the scene, but Leutner survived and managed to crawl her way out of the woods, eventually found by a bicyclist who called for help. Geyser and Weier were picked up by police later in the day.
The two girls told police that they believed the fictional monster “Slender Man” would kill their families if they didn’t kill Leutner. The girls said that when police found them, they were on their way to Slender Man’s mansion in northern Wisconsin, <a href="https://apnews.com/article/wisconsin-fa027d4a4218a8abb9dbce9cddceadfa">according to the Associated Press</a>.
Geyser was charged with attempted first-degree homicide, while Weier was charged with attempted second-degree homicide for her role in the crime. The two girls were set to be tried as adults, due to the nature of the crime.
In 2017, Weier pleaded guilty to attempted second-degree intentional homicide, and a jury found her “not guilty by mental disease or defect.” She was sent to the Winnebago Mental Health Institute as part of her 25 years to life sentence. In September 2021, Weier <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2021/07/01/us/slender-man-stabbing-anissa-weier-released.html">was granted</a> a conditional release and ordered to wear a GPS monitor while living with her father, the AP reported.
Geyser, now 20, asked Waukesha County Judge Michael Bohren earlier this month to release her as well. Like Weier, Geyser has spent four years in a mental health facility, though she was sentenced to 40 years to life. Complicating Geyser’s sentence was a diagnosis of schizophrenia, which she inherited from her father. At the time of the stabbing, Geyser had not been diagnosed yet.
“A psychiatrist hired by her attorneys previously testified that Geyser believed she could communicate telepathically with Slender Man and could see and hear other fictional characters, including unicorns and characters from the Harry Potter and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles series. She also believed she had ‘Vulcan mind control,&#8217;” the AP <a href="https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/crime/wisconsin-girl-to-be-sentenced-for-slender-man-stabbing/ar-BBIxug3">reported</a> when Geyser was sentenced in 2018.
“During a hearing Thursday, Bohren appointed three doctors to evaluate Geyser’s mental state and to submit their reports by Aug. 26. Prosecutors and defense attorneys will return to court on Sept. 12 to schedule another hearing to review the reports,” the AP reported this week.
If Geyser is released, she will likely have similar restrictions as Weier.
In 2019, Leutner, the victim, <a href="https://abcnews.go.com/US/slender-man-stabbing-victim-speaks-publicly-time-situation/story?id=66268385">told</a> ABC’s “20/20” that she has “come to accept all of the scars that I have.”
&#8220;It&#8217;s just a part of me. I don&#8217;t think much of them. They will probably go away and fade eventually,&#8221; she told the outlet.
Leutner said at the time that she had befriended Geyser and stayed her friend because she seemed lonely, and that she considered Geyser her best friend prior to becoming friends with Weier. Leutner also said during that same interview that she would probably “thank” Geyser after being asked what she would like her attacker to know.

The suspect in the Waukesha, Wisconsin attack will plead not guilty by reason of insanity as he faces six homicide charges after prosecutors say he rammed his vehicle into people attending the town&#8217;s annual Christmas parade last year.
According to the suspect’s lawyers on <a href="https://apnews.com/article/crime-wisconsin-milwaukee-207ac23d8bd6e9c77c33e15f047a515f">Monday</a>, the accused killer, a 40-year-old black male, will change his plea from not guilty to not guilty by reason of mental defect or insanity. The suspect will now undergo a mental evaluation.
If a jury is convinced that the accused is guilty of the crimes, but not mentally responsible, he could avoid being sent to prison and go to a mental institution instead.  
The alleged killer’s lawyers also argued during the hearing that the suspect’s trial should be moved from Waukesha because of several factors, including the impact the attack had on the community, news coverage, and the number of witnesses present, <a href="https://www.courthousenews.com/wisconsin-parade-crash-suspect-to-enter-insanity-plea/">according</a> to Court House News. 
Waukesha County Circuit Court Judge Jennifer Dorow was unconvinced by the defense arguments, and the trial will remain in Waukesha, a suburb of <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/milwaukee">Milwaukee.</a> 
“[In] general, the nature of the publicity has been factual and objective,” Judge Dorow said of the related media coverage.  “[And] not an attempt to influence public opinion on the guilt or innocence of [the suspect].” 
The defendant’s lawyers had also previously requested the trial be moved to a different location in February.
“While publicity is certainly relevant to determining the issue in the present case,” the attorneys wrote in the February <a href="https://www.courthousenews.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/02/darrell-brooks-venue-motion.pdf">motion</a>, “additional factors also demonstrate that, in this case and in Waukesha County, the passions and prejudice negatively affecting the Defendant’s constitutional right to a fair trial are so great that a change of venue is necessary to ensure a fair trial.” The attorneys concluded the memorandum by bluntly stating, “An impartial trial cannot be held in Waukesha County.”
Six people died in the attack, including an eight-year-old boy, and more than 60 others were injured. 
Virginia Sorenson, 79; LeAnna Owen, 71; Tamara Durand, 52; Jane Kulich, 52; Wilhelm Hospel, 81; and Jackson Sparks, 8, were all killed in the attack. 
According to the police, the alleged attacker used a “zigzagging motion” as he drove through the crowd, seemingly indicating an intentional targeting of people. Since the attack, the suspect has been housed at Waukesha County Jail.
Now held on a $5 million bail, the suspect was out of detention at the time of the attack for other charges on what officials now call an “inappropriately low” bail amount. The suspect had been released just ten days before the parade attack. 
The defendant will not be named in compliance with the long-standing <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/why-daily-wire-will-no-longer-publish-names-or-ben-shapiro">Daily Wire policy</a> not to publish the names or photographs of those suspected of committing mass casualty events.

“How come the president is visiting Buffalo after a senseless tragedy there but he couldn’t visit Waukesha after six were killed and 61 injured in an attack on a Christmas parade there?” Fox News’ Peter Doocy asked.

“The medical examiner found that five victims died of multiple blunt force injuries, and the sixth, a child, died of ‘Craniocerebral Injures from blunt force trauma to the head,’ the complaint said,” <a href="https://www.cbsnews.com/news/darrell-brooks-waukesha-parade-crash-71-charges/">CBS News</a> reported, adding, “More than 60 people were injured, including at least 18 children, authorities said. &#8230; According to the complaint, [the attacker] hit people from eight different groups participating in the parade, as well as spectators, in a 5-block span.”
The six victims were identified as Jackson Sparks, 8; Tamara Durand, 52; Jane Kulich, 52; LeAnna Owen, 71; Virginia Sorenson, 79; and Wilhelm Hospel, 81.
Nearly a month after the six victims were killed, First Lady Jill Biden managed a trip to Waukesha to visit some of the injured victims. “The first lady is the first member of the administration to meet with anyone from Waukesha since the crash that killed six people and injured more than 60,” <a href="applewebdata://A1C772C8-320C-4EC6-BC96-5255774A0618/v">CNN</a> noted.

The suspect in the Waukesha, Wisconsin, parade attack pleaded not guilty to dozens of counts, as his trial begins.
The 39-year-old suspect was formally arraigned on Friday, during a brief hearing. He waived a reading of the charges and his defense team entered not guilty pleas on all counts on his behalf. The suspect is charged with 6 counts of first-degree intentional homicide and another <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/waukesha-christmas-parade-attacker-slammed-with-71-new-charges">71 counts</a> related to the incident.
The day before, the suspect&#8217;s defense counsel filed two motions into the record, including a motion for a change of venue. The <a href="https://www.jsonline.com/story/communities/waukesha/2022/02/11/darrell-brooks-seeks-change-venue-waukesha-christmas-parade-case/6701320001/">Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel</a> reported that the defense is seeking a change of venue to another county or a jury pool picked from another county. In either case, the defense is also seeking to sequester the jury, citing widespread media coverage of the attack in the days following, as well as the outpouring of support from the community of Waukesha, including dozens of vigils held for the victims, thousands of dollars in <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/waukesha-restaurant-donates-all-friday-proceeds-to-families-impacted-by-christmas-parade-attack">donations</a> from community members, and even a visit from First Lady Jill Biden. The request also made note of the fact that Waukesha schools were closed for several days, and more than 500 students received counseling in the following days, and that the slogan &#8220;Waukesha Strong&#8221; had become ubiquitous in the community, including ten thousand blue lightbulbs distributed throughout the community as a symbol of support.
&#8220;While publicity is certainly relevant to determining the issue in the present case,&#8221; the attorneys wrote, &#8220;additional factors also demonstrate that, in this case and in Waukesha County, the passions and prejudice negatively affecting the Defendant&#8217;s constitutional right to a fair trial are so great that a change of venue is necessary to ensure a fair trial. An impartial trial cannot be held in Waukesha County.&#8221;
The defense also moved to substitute the trial judge. The Journal-Sentinel reported that the substitution may have been the reason for the short hearing. A hearing before the new trial judge is scheduled for March 11, and no movement is expected until then. Prosecutors told the Journal-Sentinel they had no intent to respond to the motions until the new hearing is held.
The suspect was ordered to stand trial at a <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/suspected-waukesha-parade-attacker-will-face-trial-on-dozens-of-counts-court-rules">preliminary hearing</a> in January, as The Daily Wire reported. The court found that there was “ample evidence” that the suspect, who has a criminal record that goes back more than two decades, “probably committed a felony or felonies within the jurisdiction of the court.” The suspect allegedly sped through a roadblock and rammed into a Christmas parade in Waukesha in November, killing 6 people, including an <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/breaking-6th-person-a-child-has-died-from-waukesha-car-attack-alleged-killer-offered-bail-again">8-year-old boy</a>. A police officer present at the scene told the court Friday that the suspect drove into the parade, which included several hundred performers and thousands of spectators, driving through large groups of people at high speed. At the time, the suspect had just been released from jail on $1000 bail set by the <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/waukesha-parade-attack-spotlights-the-danger-of-left-wing-prosecutors">Milwaukee County District Attorney</a>.

Waukesha Parade Attack Suspect Pleads Not Guilty To 77 Criminal Charges, 6 Homicide Charges

WAUKESHA, WISCONSIN — A judge-appointed court commissioner ordered a man suspected of a November 21 vehicular attack on a Christmas parade in Waukesha, Wisconsin, to stand trial over the incident.
The suspect, a 39-year-old career criminal with an over two-decade track record with the police, sat quietly in an orange prison jumper in a Waukesha courtroom on Friday. Court commissioner Kevin Costello oversaw the suspect’s prelimary hearing, concluding at the end of the roughly hour-long session that there is “ample evidence” that the defendant “probably committed a felony or felonies within the jurisdiction of the court.”
The Daily Wire has decided not to name the defendant in line with its <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/why-daily-wire-will-no-longer-publish-names-or-ben-shapiro">policy</a> against naming those suspected of perpetuating mass casualty incidents.
The defendant was charged with six counts of first-degree intentional homicide in the days following the parade attack, which killed six people and wounded more than 60 others. On Wednesday, prosecutors filed 71 more charges against the defendant in connection with the incident, according to the <a href="https://apnews.com/article/lifestyle-travel-wisconsin-milwaukee-homicide-5225d82bf153511148b8c2fb66dcd47c">Associated Press</a>.
Just one witness was called during Friday’s hearing: Waukesha police detective Thomas Casey. Casey said he was on traffic control duty the day of the parade, assigned with keeping the parade on track and stopping errant drivers from entering the route. Casey was one of the officers who attempted to stop the driver of the red Ford Escape from plowing through dozens of parade marchers and bystanders. He is also now leading the police investigation into the attack.
Casey testified that he came nearly face-to-face with the driver of the red SUV as he attempted to stop it from entering the parade route. At one point, he was separated from the driver by no more than a couple feet and the SUV’s driver’s side window as the driver rolled toward the parade, nearly driving over Casey in the process.
“The vehicle continued driving into me. I’d say it was at a slow speed at that point,” Casey said, recounting his memory of the attack. “Eventually the vehicle made contact with me, and I was pounding on the hood yelling for it to stop, which it did not.”
“As the vehicle continued pushing through me, I was, um, my position changed to the side of the vehicle where I was directly outside of the driver’s side window and I could see inside of that window and I could see the driver very clearly,” Casey continued. He later identified the defendant as the driver of the red Ford Escape.
Casey said the parade was composed of roughly 100 groups with multiple people making up each group. He estimated that thousands of people attended the parade as spectators. At the prompting of prosecutors, Casey went through the red SUV’s path through groups of parade marchers: the school band for Waukesha South High School, the Xtreme Dance Team composed of middle schoolers in the area, the senior performance group Milwaukee Dancing Grannies, and others.
Casey said that at times the driver appeared to intentionally target groups of people, and stated that the red SUV appeared to reach a speed of 40-50 miles-per-hour during the roughly 3-minute long drive through the parade. He said that the driver never attempted to stop to check on the numerous victims hit. The detective also noted that inspectors certified that “there is nothing on the vehicle that is defective that would make the vehicle so it would not stop or accelerate.”
During cross-examination, the defendant’s attorneys asked Casey about police procedures for protecting the parade and noted an instance captured on video where the driver of the SUV appeared to purposely avoid hitting a small child and another instance where the driver swerved to avoid hitting a vehicle.
The defense team also asked Casey about his brief interaction with the driver of the red SUV during the parade. The defense team asked Casey about the driver wearing a gray sweatshirt and the length of the driver’s hair, to which Casey responded that he saw those details after while reviewing evidence. As he attempted to stop the red SUV, Casey reiterated that he was only focused on the driver’s face.
“I was just focused on his face. I mean, I was just zeroed in on his face. That’s all that I was looking at. It happened very fast. I was very orientated on his face,” Casey said. “Things were happening very fast and I wanted to remember his face, so I was focusing on that.”
Defense attorneys noted that a police officer that came into contact with the defendant after his arrest reported an “odor of marijuana” on the suspect and observed that the suspect’s eyes were “red, bloodshot, [and] glassy.”
The defense team further noted that during an interview with police, the defendant “did not want” to look at photos and videos of the parade carnage and at one point “begged” officers to stop showing them to him. The suspect “indicated to one of the detective that ‘I didn’t mean to kill nobody,’” a defense attorney said.
At the conclusion of the hearing, Commissioner Costello set the defendant’s arraignment for the morning of February 11.

The complaint adds, “At no time did [the attacker], as the operator of the SUV involved in the multiple collisions, make any reasonable effort to investigate what was struck, and that he failed to stop the vehicle as close to the scene of the accident as possible, and did not remain at the scene of the accident.”
The suspect complained in an interview with <a href="https://www.foxnews.com/us/waukesha-parade-suspect-darrell-brooks-jail-dehumanized-demonized-interview">Fox News</a> that was being &#8220;dehumanized&#8221; and &#8220;demonized.&#8221; Roughly a week after the massacre, Florida GOP governor Ron DeSantis <a href="https://dailywire.com/news/desantis-blasts-media-over-waukesha-attack-suspect-had-anti-white-animus-was-an-intentional-act/">eviscerated the media</a> for their coverage of the story, saying:
<blockquote>You never actually hear the discussion about who committed this; what was the motivation? This guy was a career criminal let out on, didn&#8217;t really have any bail basically, should not have even been on the street, had clear, anti-white animus. And this was an intentional act. And it seems like, you know, for corporate press, they&#8217;re more apt to characterize a parent who goes to a school board meeting to protest bad policies as a domestic terrorist than somebody who intentionally rams an SUV into a crowd of innocent people.</blockquote>
&#8220;So, you have at least six have died, you have many more that have been injured,&#8221; DeSantis added. &#8220;I know many people are in the hospital. And so let&#8217;s just be clear, this was not a car just driving in. This was an attack by a felon who did that, who should not have been on the street and we&#8217;ll see what the actual motivation was. It very well may have been in response to what happened with Kyle Rittenhouse. And you have to wonder if that&#8217;s the case, almost surely, this guy&#8217;s view of Rittenhouse was was colored by all these media lies. He brought a rifle across state lines, that&#8217;s a lie. They said that the initial altercation with Jacob Blake, that Blake was unarmed, that&#8217;s a lie. They covered up Blake&#8217;s criminal history.&#8221;
