After a sales manager for the NFL’s Washington Commanders called them a “fake group” when they demanded in a petition that the team return to their original Washington Redskins name, the Native American Guardians Association (NAGA) fired back.
Former luxury box owner Christina King — who relinquished her suite after the Redskins changed their name — had texted Matthew Laux, a premium-seat sales manager for the Commanders and FedEx Field, “This name change WAS, IS &amp; forever will be a major problem,”  adding, “We just signed the petition from NAGA … We will come back as suite owners when the name reverts back to the Washington Redskins &#8230; The team never should have never been pressured into changing the name.”
Laux replied, “You understand the people that started this petition is a fake group, right?” He added, “As a fan of the team I didn&#8217;t want it [the Redskins name] changed either.”
“We’re not a fake group,” NAGA Eunice Davidson, a self-described “full-blooded Dakota Sioux” who is the co-founder and president, fired back. “We’re tribal-enrolled members from tribes across the United States.&#8221; She blasted “racist white woke” college professors and academics, saying, “People want to call us fake and they’ve done that before. They never tell our story and that’s their goal: to wipe out Native history. It’s discrimination when you go after one culture like this.”
Native American historian M. Andre Billeaudeaux, the author of “How The Redskins Got Their Name,&#8221; commented, “These people are just ignorant. It’s toxic ignorance. It’s group think. It’s the psychology of a group that has no idea what they&#8217;re doing, but they won’t listen to us, either. &#8230; Redskins is not about race. It&#8217;s a warrior who&#8217;s gone through the bloodroot ceremony. &#8230; They shave their heads and surrender their souls to their Creator. They paint themselves red as if they were born new into the world.”
“The Redskins were the only minority representation in the entire NFL and it was a real person, not a mascot,”  Billeaudeaux added. “The name Redskins is a national treasure. And for that reason it should be protected. It’s a cultural treasure and deserves to be protected and understood. It’s not just about the football team. It’s about the DNA of the nation.”
“We’re Redskins fans, not Commanders fans,” King argued. “We’re not coming back until the name comes back. They’ve taken these images from sports. They bowed to the woke and they’re trying to erase Native American history.”
The Commanders issued a statement saying, “For nearly 90 years, this franchise had a different name, and many have fond memories of cheering for that team and watching it win three Super Bowls. This does not signify any shift in our approach nor does it change the valid reasons for dropping the name.”
A spokesperson for the team informed <a href="https://www.foxnews.com/sports/native-americans-leading-redskins-petition-outraged-washington-commanders-rep-called-fake-group">Fox News Digital</a> that Laux does not speak for the team.

In a letter that addressed what the group called the &#8220;cancel culture&#8221; against the Native American population and the erasure of its &#8220;steadfast role in American history, including serving as counselors to the Founding Fathers in the creation of the U.S. constitution.&#8221;
The letter talked about the history of the Washington football team and it&#8217;s relationship with the Native American community dating back to its 1933 season when they were named the <a href="https://sportsteamhistory.com/boston-redskins/#:~:text=The%20team%20was%20founded%20in%201932%20by%20George%20Preston%20Marshall,for%20more%20than%2080%20years." target="_blank" rel="noopener">Boston Redskins</a>.
&#8220;At this moment in history, we are formally requesting that the team revitalize its relationship with the American Indian community by (i) changing the name back to &#8216;The Redskins&#8217; which recognizes America&#8217;s original inhabitants and (ii) using the team&#8217;s historic name and legacy to encourage Americans to learn about, not cancel, the history of America&#8217;s tribes and our role in the founding of this Great Nation,&#8221; the letter read.
&#8220;Should we need to encourage a national boycott similar to what happened with Anheuser Busch (Bud Light) which is now down $27 billion (note, not one brick thrown, not one highway blocked, not one bridge burned) — WE WILL DO JUST THAT,&#8221; the letter <a href="https://www.washingtonexaminer.com/news/native-american-group-threatens-commanders-boycott-name-change" target="_blank" rel="noopener">added</a>.
The letter closed out by noting that in 2023, this &#8220;oppression and arbitrary and capricious recognition of U.S. history and Constitutional rights is not acceptable.&#8221; The group also vowed to stand their ground because, if &#8220;you don&#8217;t acknowledge history, we are doomed to repeat it.&#8221;
In 2020, the team announced it was <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/redskins-cave-announce-thorough-review-of-name-here-are-the-top-suggestions" target="_blank" rel="noopener">removing Redskins</a> from its name and two years later announced the national professional football team would be called the Washington Commanders.
The <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/washington-redskins-cant-return-to-dc-unless-they-change-their-name-officials-say" target="_blank" rel="noopener">name change came</a> about from pressure from the cancel culture mob following the death of George Floyd and those who claimed that the term was racist and offensive to Native Americans.

The <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/nfl" target="_blank" rel="noopener">NFL</a> suspended five players on Friday for violating the league&#8217;s prohibition on sports gambling.
The league suspended Detroit Lions wide receiver Quintez Cephus and safety C.J. Moore, and Washington Commanders defensive end Shaka Toney, for at least one year, for allegedly betting on games. Cephus and Moore were promptly cut by the Lions. Former Lions first-round draft pick Jameson Williams and fellow wide receiver Stanley Berryhill were also suspended for six games.
&#8220;The gambling policy, which is annually reviewed with all NFL personnel, including players, prohibits anyone in the NFL from engaging in any form of gambling in any club or league facility or venue, including the practice facility,&#8221; the <a href="https://nflcommunications.com/Pages/NFL-INDEFINTELY-SUSPENDS-THREE-PLAYERS-AND--TWO-OTHER-PLAYERS-SIX-GAMES-EACH-FOR--GAMBLING-POLICY-VIOLATIONS.aspx" target="_blank" rel="noopener">NFL</a> said in a statement. &#8220;A league review uncovered no evidence indicating any inside information was used or that any game was compromised in any way.&#8221;
Cephus, Moore, and Toney were all suspended indefinitely and cannot apply for reinstatement until after the 2023 season. Williams and Berryhill, meanwhile, were suspended six games for betting on non-NFL games in an NFL facility. They are allowed to participate in offseason programs and the preseason; their suspensions will be enforced after final roster cuts.
Cephus and Moore were cut from the Lions on Friday as well. &#8220;These players exhibited decision making that is not consistent with our organizational values and violates league rules,&#8221; <a href="https://www.detroitlions.com/news/lions-release-wr-quintez-cephus-and-s-c-j-moore" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Lions</a> Executive Vice President and General Manager Brad Holmes said in a statement. &#8220;We have made the decision to part ways with Quintez and C.J. immediately.&#8221;
&#8220;We are disappointed by the decision making demonstrated by Stanley and Jameson and will work with both players to ensure they understand the severity of these violations and have clarity on the league rules moving forward,&#8221; Holmes added.
The <a href="https://www.nfl.com/news/nfl-suspends-five-players-including-four-lions-for-violating-gambling-policy" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Commanders</a> issued a statement saying they had been made aware of the suspension and directed inquiries to the league office.
Williams was selected by the Lions out of Alabama with the 12th overall pick in the 2022 NFL Draft. He did not play most of his rookie season due to a torn ACL he suffered in the CFP National Championship in 2022. He returned for the last four games of the season, catching one pass for a 41-yard touchdown, and rushing once for 40 yards.

Cephus was a 5th-round pick by the Lions out of Wisconsin. He played in 22 games for the team, catching 37 passes for 568 yards and four touchdowns. He spent time on injured reserve during all three seasons, but was expected to battle for a roster spot this year.
Berryhill was an undrafted free agent signed by the Atlanta Falcons in 2022. He was on the Lions&#8217; practice squad in 2022. Moore was also a member of the Lions practice squad in 2022.
Toney was drafted by the Commanders in the 7th round of the 2021 NFL Draft. He played 26 games in two seasons, notching 16 tackles and 1.5 sacks.
The suspensions come more than a year after Atlanta Falcons star wide receiver <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/atlanta-falcons-wide-receiver-suspended-indefinitely-after-betting-on-games" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Calvin Ridley</a> was suspended for the entire 2022 season for betting on 2021 NFL games. According to reports from the time, Ridley reportedly placed several parlay bets on the Falcons to win, while he was away from the team for his &#8220;mental health.&#8221; Ridley has since been reinstated. He signed with the <a href="https://www.jaguars.com/team/players-roster/calvin-ridley/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Jacksonville Jaguars</a> this year.

Amazon founder Jeff Bezos responded to a report Monday that claimed that he was considering selling The Washington Post so he could purchase an NFL team from an owner who hates the newspaper.
The New York Post <a href="https://nypost.com/2023/01/23/jeff-bezos-will-sell-washington-post-to-buy-commanders-investors/">reported</a> that Bezos is looking to potentially buy the Washington Commanders from team owner Dan Synder.
Snyder, however, despises the newspaper because it reported on the alleged toxic management of the NFL franchise.
After the report was published on Monday, representatives for Bezos and The Washington Post both <a href="https://edition.cnn.com/2023/01/23/media/washington-post-jeff-bezos">told</a> CNN that the newspaper was not for sale.
The New York Post report comes after the newspaper&#8217;s publisher, Fred Ryan, told staff last month that there would be layoffs.
Sources reportedly told the New York Post they believe that The Washington Post is for sale even though Bezos allegedly told senior staff at the paper that he had no plans to sell.
“I think Bezos’ people could go to Dan and say as a gesture of goodwill, &#8216;We are selling the paper,&#8217;” a source familiar with the matter said. “I think that would go a long way with Dan.&#8221;
The bank that Snyder hired to sell the team continues to court Bezos, even though Snyder might not want to sell to him, the report said. The first round of bidding has already started.
JP Finlay, who covers the Commanders for NBC Sports, tweeted, “Not only was I told Bezos didn’t submit a bid, I’ve had people tell me the Snyder family has absolutely no interest in selling to Bezos.”
Bezos, who purchased the paper a decade ago for a quarter of a billion dollars, said in a book that he wrote that purchasing the paper would be one of his top achievements.
“I know that when I’m 90, it’s going to be one of the things I’m most proud of, that I took on the Washington Post and helped it through a very rough transition,” Bezos wrote.
The report noted that Bezos&#8217; libertarian-leaning political views have reportedly made him an awkward fit for the paper.
Journalism professor Edward Wasserman said that he did not believe that Bezos understood how owning the paper would &#8220;muzzle him&#8221; when he bought it and that &#8220;it would make sense for him to get out of it.”

Jeff Bezos may be angling to buy the Washington Commanders, according to multiple reports.
Sources close to Bezos told People magazine and the Washington Post that Bezos, the second richest man in the world and founder of Amazon, is interested in buying the team, after it was announced that team owner Dan Synder was exploring potential transactions for the team. Snyder and the Commanders have been embroiled in a series of scandals in recent years, some of which have made the company a target of Congressional investigations.
The source told <a href="https://people.com/sports/jeff-bezos-interested-buying-washington-commanders-source/?utm_campaign=peoplemagazine&amp;utm_content=new&amp;utm_medium=social&amp;utm_source=twitter.com&amp;utm_term=6363ed0b96327400011278e4" target="_blank" rel="noopener">People</a> that Bezos was &#8220;looking into buying the Washington Commanders.&#8221; Bezos may also be inclined to include rapper Jay-Z in his purchase.  A separate source confirmed People&#8217;s report to the <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/sports/2022/11/03/jeff-bezos-jay-z-washington-commanders/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Washington Post</a>. The source also said that both Bezos and Jay-Z were interested in buying the team, but he did not know whether or not the two moguls would partner on their offer.
Bezos has previously expressed interest in owning an NFL franchise. A <a href="https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/news/nfl-playoff-picture-after-eight-weeks-predicting-final-seeding-ravens-take-advantage-of-remaining-schedule/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">CBS Sports</a> report from 2019 said that Bezos had &#8220;become close with several current owners &#8230; and [had] strong support within the league to eventually join their ranks.&#8221; Snyder was one of the NFL owners Bezos had interacted with, CBS reported. Bezos had previously been rumored to be interested in buying the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/amazon-jeff-bezos-may-buy-seattle-seahawks-nfl-team-report-2019-11" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Seattle Seahawks</a> after owner Paul Allen died in 2018. Meanwhile, Amazon, the company Bezos founded and serves as executive chairman of, currently holds exclusive broadcasting rights to &#8220;Thursday Night Football.&#8221;
Jay-Z previously owned a stake in the NBA&#8217;s Brooklyn Nets from 2004-2013. The rapper&#8217;s entertainment firm, Roc Nation, <a href="https://www.nfl.com/news/jay-z-s-roc-nation-entering-partnership-with-nfl-0ap3000001041162#:~:text=Roc%20Nation%2C%20the%20entertainment%20company,the%20league's%20social%20justice%20efforts." target="_blank" rel="noopener">partnered</a> with the NFL in 2019 to provide entertainment for live game experiences, including selecting talent for Super Bowl halftime shows and partnering with the NFL&#8217;s social justice initiatives.
Commanders owner Dan Snyder announced <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/storied-nfl-franchise-goes-on-block-could-fetch-5b-or-more" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Wednesday</a> that he and wife Tanya Snyder hired Bank of America Securities to &#8220;consider potential transactions&#8221; for the team, which could include adding a minority owner or selling the team outright. In 2020, under pressure from activists, the team dropped the name and was known for the next two years as simply The Washington Football Team. This season, it unveiled its current name.
Snyder, 57, made his fortune in indoor advertising and marketing. His tenure as an NFL owner has been stormy, marked by a losing record and only a few brief playoff appearances. In addition, a 2021 investigation into the team’s workplace culture, prompted by an explosive Washington Post report alleging rampant sexual harassment, uncovered <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/nfl-cheerleaders-blast-leagues-sexist-culture-following-topless-email-scandal/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">incidents of harassment</a>, bullying, and intimidation throughout the organization.
The team was fined $10 million by the league, and Snyder was forced to relinquish his role in running the team’s day-to-day operations.
If the team is sold, it could be the second team under new ownership in less than a year. An ownership group led by Walmart heir S. Robson Walton purchased the <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/report-walmart-heir-expected-to-buy-denver-broncos-for-4-5-billion-largest-sports-team-purchase-in-history" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Denver Broncos</a> for $4.5 billion in June, the largest purchase of a sports team in history.

The NFL’s <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/washington-commanders-coach-jack-del-rio-fined-for-comments-on-george-floyd-january-6-riots/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Washington Commanders</a> are on the block, and the sale price for one of the league’s most storied franchises could approach $5 billion.
<a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/commissioner-roger-goodell-says-nfl-will-not-release-emails-from-washington-football-team-investigation/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Embattled owner Dan Snyder</a>, who bought the team in 1999 when it was known as the Washington Redskins, has hired Bank of America to find a buyer and facilitate a deal, a statement said. Snyder has been at odds with the league and even some fellow owners in the wake of a sexual harassment investigation.
“Dan and Tanya Snyder and the Washington Commanders announced today that they have hired BofA Securities to consider potential transactions,” the team said in the statement. “The Snyders remain committed to the team, all of its employees and its countless fans to putting the best product on the field and continuing the work to set the gold standard for workplaces in the NFL.”
A person described as being familiar with the process told Forbes Snyder has received at least inquiries from potential buyers. Snyder, who owns the team outright, is considering either selling it all or just a minority stake, Forbes reported.

Rookie Brian Robinson Jr. took the field for the NFL’s <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/washington-commanders" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Washington Commanders</a> Sunday, just six weeks after he was <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/nfl-rookie-ex-alabama-star-shot-multiple-times-in-dc-robbery-attempt" target="_blank" rel="noopener">shot twice in an attempted carjacking</a>.
The former Alabama star was introduced last at the home game against the Tennessee Titans, running out of the tunnel to <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/50-cent" target="_blank" rel="noopener">50 Cent</a>&#8216;s &#8220;Many Men&#8221; amid thunderous applause. He later briefly got into the game, which the Commanders lost by a 21-17 score. It capped a remarkable comeback for the 6-foot, 1-inch, 230-pound running back.
“Right now it’s just one day at a time, continue to make positive strides and hopefully soon,” Robinson, who was shot August 28 in Washington, D.C., said earlier in the week.

Robinson was cleared medically after healing from the two gunshot wounds, one of which hit him in the buttocks and the other which struck his right knee but missed bones and ligaments. Although he was not in the starting lineup, Robinson led the team with 22 rushing yards on nine carries.
Robinson, who starred at <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/alabama">University of Alabama</a> before being selected by the Commanders in the third round of this year’s NFL draft, was the apparent victim of a car-jacking attempt in August.
“We have been made aware that Brian Robinson Jr. was the victim of an attempted armed robbery or carjacking in Washington D.C.,” the team <a href="https://www.nfl.com/news/commanders-rookie-rb-brian-robinson-in-stable-condition-following-shooting">said</a> in a statement at the time.
Metro Police Department spokesman Dustin Sternbeck said the incident happened on August 26 shortly before 6 p.m. ET in the 1000 block of H Street, NE, in the district. The location is in the Carver Langston neighborhood, just northeast of Capitol Hill. Police responded to a report of shots fired and found Robinson suffering from “a couple gunshot wounds to his lower extremities,” Sternbeck said.
Police identified two potential suspects and recovered a gun near the crime scene.
Robinson had stood out in training camp this season and appeared poised to be the team’s starting running back.
Robinson emerged as a starter as a fifth-year senior at Alabama last year, rushing for 1,343 yards and 14 touchdowns as the Crimson Tide made it to the college football championship game, losing 33-18 to Georgia.

A rookie running back for the <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/nfl" target="_blank" rel="noopener">NFL</a>’s <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/washington-commanders" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Washington Commanders</a> was shot multiple times Sunday night in an apparent attempted robbery in the nation’s capital, police said.
Running back Brian Robinson, who starred at <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/alabama" target="_blank" rel="noopener">University of Alabama</a> before being selected by the team in the third round of this year’s NFL draft, was taken to a city hospital with what the team termed “non-life-threatening injuries.” Police said he was shot in the “lower extremities” and were trying to determine if he was the victim of a car-jacking attempt.
“We have been made aware that Brian Robinson Jr. was the victim of an attempted armed robbery or carjacking in Washington D.C.,” the team <a href="https://www.nfl.com/news/commanders-rookie-rb-brian-robinson-in-stable-condition-following-shooting">said</a> in a statement. “He sustained non-life-threatening injuries and is currently being treated at the hospital where team officials are on-site with him. We ask that you please respect Brian’s privacy at this time.”

According to a <a href="https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/34478785/washington-commanders-rb-brian-robinson-stable-condition-being-shot-attempted-carjacking-source-says">team spokesman</a>, co-owners Dan and Tanya Snyder, president Jason Wright, coach Ron Rivera, team physician Dr. Anthony Casolaro and Dr. Barbara Roberts, a clinical psychologist, were all at the hospital with Robinson.

The Washington Football Team — formerly known as the Washington Redskins — will be announcing their team’s new name on February 2. 
The team initially changed its name prior to the 2020 season after years of pressure from Native American organizations to move away from the team&#8217;s nickname of more than 80 years. The announcement was made on social media, paying tribute to the past in a video.

Co-CEO Tanya Snyder told ESPN’s Adam Schefter in September that the team was down to eight final names. The names were the Armada, Presidents, Brigade, Commanders, Redhawks, Defenders, RedWolves, and the Football Team. 
On Tuesday, Washington Team President Jason Wright announced that RedWolves — a fan favorite — would no longer be considered as the team’s new name due to trademark issues. 
“Early on we understood Wolves — or some variation of it — was one of our fan favorites,” Wright <a href="https://www.washingtonfootball.com/news/presidents-brief-why-wolves-wont-work">said</a> in a statement on the team’s website. “As I&#8217;ve said all along, we take feedback from our fans seriously, and because of your interest in this name, we put Wolves on a list of options to explore fully. Once we began looking into Wolves, however, we became aware of a notable challenge: trademarks held by other teams would limit our ability to make the name our own. And without Wolves, variations like RedWolves wouldn&#8217;t have been viable either for these and other reasons.”
In a separate video, former Redskins great and current senior advisor Doug Williams reacted to the new uniforms, without giving away the entire look. 
&#8220;It&#8217;s a clean uniform,” Williams said. “I believe in clean uniforms. You just got the number and the uniform stripes around the shoulders, and that&#8217;s it. That&#8217;s going to be a good-looking uniform.&#8221;

In July, the Cleveland MLB franchise changed their name from the Cleveland Indians to the Cleveland Guardians. 
“We are excited to usher in the next era of the deep history of baseball in Cleveland,” owner Paul Dolan <a href="https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/31868331/cleveland-changing-name-indians-guardians">said</a> in a statement. “Cleveland has and always will be the most important part of our identity. Therefore, we wanted a name that strongly represents the pride, resiliency and loyalty of Clevelanders.”
“‘Guardians’ reflects those attributes that define us while drawing on the iconic Guardians of Traffic just outside the ballpark on the Hope Memorial Bridge. It brings to life the pride Clevelanders take in our city and the way we fight together for all who choose to be part of the Cleveland baseball family. While ‘Indians’ will always be a part of our history, our new name will help unify our fans and city as we are all Cleveland Guardians.”
Citing concerns over offending members of Native American and indigenous peoples, the team announced in December 2020 that they’d be choosing a new name.

According to the former cheerleading director for the then-Washington Redskins, owner Daniel Snyder once allegedly told him in 2004 that if he didn&#8217;t keep the cheerleaders “skinny with big t***,” then he would “f*****g kill&#8217; him.”
That claim from former cheerleading director Donald Wells was made to attorney Lisa Banks, who along with fellow attorney Debra Katz is representing 12 former cheerleaders who are suing the owner and the team for salacious videos made of the cheerleaders showing their nipples and private parts. Attorney Gloria Allred said she represents 20 more ex-cheerleaders.
Wells, who led the cheerleading squad from 1997 to 2009, said, “I would never have told anyone about that if it weren&#8217;t for the revelation that the videos were created of my cheerleaders without their knowledge. I was embarrassed and scared if I said anything I might be fired,” <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/sports/2020/10/16/washington-cheerleaders-video-lawsuit/">The Washington Post</a> reported.
The lewd videos in question were produced from outtakes of the cheerleaders&#8217; 2008 and 2010 swimsuit calendar shoots. They featured rock music as the underscore, including hits by the Rolling Stones and U2.  The Post pointed out that Snyder had said the two bands were his favorites in a <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/dc-sports-bog/post/dan-snyder-is-a-prankster/2011/05/27/AGVHLmCH_blog.html">2011 interview</a>.
“Then-senior vice president Larry Michael told broadcasting staffers to produce the videos, according to two ex-employees, one of whom said the footage was to be assembled for team owner Daniel Snyder. Snyder and Michael have denied any knowledge of the videos, <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/sports/2020/08/26/redskins-cheerleaders-video-daniel-snyder-washington/?arc404=true&amp;itid=lk_inline_manual_16">copies of which were obtained by The Post</a>,” The Washington Post noted.
The NFL met with Katz, then launched an investigation. This week, the Washington Football team agreed to permit an “independent forensic investigation” to obtain any of the copies of the videos. The team stated, “Like many companies and organizations, the Washington Football Team is examining its historical practices and behaviors. We take the criticisms of our cheerleading program seriously and we remain committed to reviewing all programs thoroughly.”
The Post noted, “The decisions to pose topless or in body paint were their own, former cheerleaders said,” but explained that the cheerleaders were required to sell at least 50 calendars, and the cheerleaders felt that the racier the shoot was with them in it, the more likely they could win a calendar “month” to propel them toward their individual sales targets.
An obstacle in the cheerleaders’ way in their lawsuit, according to the Post, is the fact that “the contracts covering the cheerleaders in the 2008 and 2010 videos give the team what appears to be unfettered permission to use the women’s names, voices and images ‘in connection with any and all publications, broadcasts, websites, web postings, promotional photographs, promotional posters, and any other commercial or noncommercial products, including but not limited to calendars, team photos, T-shirts, videos, Internet content, and team marketing and sponsorship activities and materials.’”

Some of the cheerleaders were topless; others wore nothing but body paint, according to the Times. None of the pictures were used in the calendar.</blockquote>

The NFL team formerly known as the Washington Redskins may permanently change its name to the Washington Football Team, the temporary moniker the franchise landed on while searching for a permanent name.
Dan Snyder, the owner of the team, told <a href="https://www.wsj.com/articles/why-washingtons-nfl-team-hasnt-picked-a-nameand-could-keep-its-interim-one-11600009482?mod=e2tw">The Wall Street Journal</a> in an email ahead of the Sunday game against the Philadelphia Eagles, it was “possible” the interim team name could become the permanent designation for the NFL team, whose former name was the subject of on-and-off controversy for a number of years.
“If the Washington Football Team name catches on and our fans embrace it then we would be happy to have it as our permanent name,” wrote Snyder. “I think we have developed a very classy retro look and feel.”
Snyder also told the WSJ that, in the last several years, the team name “had increasingly become a distraction from our primary focus of football.”
“So, in the spirit of inclusivity, we made the decision to move forward. We want our future name and brand to stand for something that unifies people of all backgrounds and to continue to be a source of pride for the next 100 years or more,” he wrote.
When the NFL team rolled out the name-change earlier this summer, the Washington Football Team was the subject of <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/former-washington-redskins-announce-temporary-name">much online ridicule</a> among people who pointed out that the name itself could be cancel-worthy — in addition to there being ample potential for general mockery.

“The Washington Football Team played like a group of guys determined to make a name for themselves,” reported <a href="https://www.espn.com/nfl/recap?gameId=401220268">The Associated Press</a> after the NFL team won its first game under its place-holder name on Sunday.
As <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/the-navajo-nation-selects-new-name-they-want-the-washington-redskins-to-use">The Daily Wire</a> previously reported, after the Redskins announced their upcoming name change earlier this summer, the Navajo Nation suggested the NFL team take up the name “Code Talkers” to honor the “Navajo Code Talkers, and other tribal nations who used their sacred language to help win” the Second World War.
The suggestion does not appear to have taken off. In fact, back in 2013, USA Today <a href="https://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/nfl/redskins/2013/11/26/washington-name-controversy-navajo-code-talkers/3759037/">reported</a> that the Washington Redskins were criticized by some people for honoring Navajo Codetalkers during a Native American Heritage month ceremony at the stadium.
