There may be no other single college in America that is a better example of the failures of being “woke” than the University of Missouri, more commonly known as Mizzou.
The latest embarrassment for the university comes from its attempt at a PR campaign featuring student athletes. The aim or the campaign was simple enough: Show that student athletes are more than the stereotypical jock. The school asked athletes who they are as a person.
But when the school made images using the photos of these athletes, something went wrong. The photos highlighting white female athletes included quotes saying what they want to be in the future.
“I am a future doctor,” reads the quote from Chelsey Christensen.
“I am a future corporate financer,” reads the quote from CJ Kovac.
But the images featuring African-American athletes don’t include information about their futures. Arielle Mack’s photo quote reads: “I am an African American woman.” Caulin Graves’ quote says, “I am a brother.”
This might not have been such a problem if there was a little more explanation. If they simply asked the students to finish the sentence, “I am a/an,” one might get more insight into the students. We would commend Graves for putting his family first.
But a video released with the images shows that the black students did talk about their futures, but that’s not what the school included.

Graves did not simply say he “is a brother.” He also said he was an uncle “and a leader.”
Mack said she was “a future physical therapist” in addition to the quote included on her image. Another black student athlete said he was an electrical engineer. Why couldn’t those quotes be included on images to continue the theme?
After a swift backlash, Mizzou deleted its tweet featuring the athletes’ images and apologized.

RedState’s Kira Davis included screenshots of the failed tweets in <a href="https://www.redstate.com/kiradavis/2019/10/25/epic-fail-mizzou-athletics-attempt-diversity-campaign-goes-horribly-horribly-wrong/">her article</a> about the PR disaster, writing:
<blockquote>To recap: at Mizzou white student athletes are future doctors and business people. Black student athletes are…black. Poor Caulin Graves doesn’t even get to be black, just “a brother.” *insert laughy-cry emoji here*</blockquote>
Mizzou’s social justice troubles <a href="https://www.washingtonexaminer.com/mizzou-closes-two-dorms-due-to-lack-of-students">began in 2015</a>, when it became the poster child for protests from students claiming their school was a hotbed of racism. During the protests, professor Melissa Click pushed a student journalist and threatened to call some “muscle” over. She was eventually fired and charged with assault.
The incident was embarrassing for the school, which saw a massive drop in admissions the following year. The drop in admissions led to a $32 million budget shortfall, which resulted in the closure of two dorms.
Earlier this year, the school was threatened with <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/mizzou-faces-loss-funding-threat-over-lack-due-ashe-schow">a loss of funding</a> due to its lack of due process for students accused of sexual assault. Local media sneered at legislators’ attempts to provide basic fairness to murky he said/she said accusations by scoffing at the idea that an accused student deserved to see the evidence against him and to cross-examine his accuser.

Mizzou Steps In It Again – This Time With Failed Diversity Stunt Involving White And Black Athletes

Hillsdale College and the University of Missouri (Mizzou) are in the midst of a legal showdown over donor dollars — or more specifically, over a hefty donation from Sherlock Hibbs, a Wall Street financier who died in 2002.
Hibbs’ will allotted $5 million to Mizzou for the purpose of hiring &#8220;dedicated and articulate disciples&#8221; of the free market — specifically, Austrian economics. However, he installed a caveat: Follow the stipulations of the donation or forfeit the funds to Hillsdale College, a famously conservative institution.
With colleges and universities so ready to leave conservative principles in the dustbin of history, it’s no wonder Hibbs didn’t necessarily trust Mizzou to fulfill the conditions of his donation. And sadly, according to Hillsdale, Hibbs was right to be skeptical all along. The conservative college has <a href="https://www.courts.mo.gov/file.jsp?id=135916">filed a lawsuit</a> that challenges Mizzou’s use of the donation.
“[Mizzou] has never appointed a dedicated and articulate disciple of the Ludwig von Mises (Austrian) School of Economics to a Chair or Distinguished Professorship funded by Mr. Hibbs&#8217; gift,&#8221; Hillsdale&#8217;s attorneys <a href="https://www.courts.mo.gov/file.jsp?id=135916">wrote</a> in the lawsuit. “Instead, [Mizzou] provided millions of dollars over 15 years to individuals who were not Austrian economists.”
There are <a href="https://www.columbiatribune.com/news/20190708/michigan-college-sues-over-5-million-donated-to-mu?fbclid=IwAR3pPsNCdKW67LFDsY4_8KKn5f0fZo7rMCaqTcCGHYnsPUVHvBVjO7omcD4">currently four professors at Mizzou who are funded</a> by Hibbs&#8217; donation: Karen Schnatterly, Dan Turban, Lisa Scheer, and Rhonda Reger. Each scholar signed an oath that he/she is “a dedicated and articulate disciple of the free and open market economy (the Ludwig von Mises Austrian School of Economics).” However, according to Hillsdale’s research, not one of these scholars has published on the topic.
Phil Magness, an economic historian and senior research fellow at the American Institute for Economic Research, backs this up. “None of the named faculty appear to have any meaningful research in or connection to Austrian economics.&#8221; Magness continued: &#8220;It looks like Missouri accepted the cash, then failed to honor the terms of the donor.&#8221;
Furthermore, Mizzou refuses to respond to requests for comment regarding these professors’ course curricula. Mizzou&#8217;s director of media relations, Christian Basi, told Reason’s Robby Soave that evidence of dedication to Mises is “not a requirement of the gift.”
Taking all this into account, Mizzou seems happy to rake in donor money but is unwilling to use it for its intent of funding ideological diversity on campus — which Mizzou desperately needs.
After all, this is the same campus where a street preacher was <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/1281/heres-why-preacher-got-punched-mizzou-amanda-prestigiacomo">punched in the face</a>, a professor <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/39732/mizzou-official-claims-tall-men-asking-out-short-ashe-schow">threatened a student journalist</a>, and the <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/21480/update-two-years-after-embracing-racial-protests-james-barrett">football team vowed to quit</a> if the president of the university didn’t resign. In fact, these antics resulted in enrollment dropping a stunning 35%, forcing the school to shut down seven dorms and lay off more than 400 employees. With stats like that, reverting a donation to Hillsdale should be the least of the school’s worries.
Mizzou’s blatant disregard for the terms of the donation agreement paints the perfect picture of how many colleges and universities are willing to pay lip service to ideological diversity while spitting in its face. Thank God for the institution of Hillsdale, which provides an alternative and conservative voice in the academic marketplace, and is now holding other universities accountable, as well.

Speaking at the University of Missouri-Kansas City on Thursday night, The Daily Wire&#8217;s Michael Knowles was attacked by a masked protester who used a super soaker to fire liquid at him that appeared to be glitter-colored bleach; police later said that the liquid merely smelled like bleach. Knowles&#8217; speech was titled simply &#8220;Men Are Not Women.&#8221;
Hecklers consistently interrupted Knowles and yelled at him, prompting Knowles to respond, &#8220;I know, you&#8217;re so oppressed, my dears. I know, life is so hard for you. You have to live in the richest, most equitable, most just country in the history of the world. You have to get a college education; you have to voluntarily go to lectures; it&#8217;s so awful. I can&#8217;t imagine.&#8221;
As the protesters stood up and started leaving, Knowles continued, &#8220;People who are in war-torn nations; they must truly pity you. Goodbye. Goodbye.&#8221; The crowd started clapping; Knowles said, &#8220;Thank you gentlemen, for your support. I&#8217;m not that intimidated by these guys &#8230; There&#8217;s a course being taught right now at an American university on angry white men. When I look at who&#8217;s angry, I&#8217;m not so sure &#8230;&#8221; The hecklers started yelling again, prompting Knowles to reply, &#8220;I know. I seem so hateful. You guys seem lovely and sweet. You guys seem so compassionate and lovely.&#8221; Turning to one protester, he replied, &#8220;You hope that what? Well, it&#8217;s very difficult to use my platform when people use the hecklers veto to try to shut up any opinion that disagrees&#8212;&#8221;
Then all hell broke loose, as the protester tried to squirt what appeared to be bleach at Knowles.
Knowles told The Daily Wire, &#8220;The topic of my lecture was &#8216;Men Are Not Women.&#8217; Apparently this plain fact was so offensive to some leftist thugs that one of them decided to shoot me in the face and side with a super soaker full of what appeared to be glitter-colored bleach. At first I just thought it was paint because of the color and smell. I was later told it was bleach; police now say that the substance merely smelled like bleach. This is what conservatives on campus are up against. This is the kind of violence conservatives on campus stand to face if they state plain facts and refuse to kowtow to leftist fantasy.&#8221;
Police reportedly tazed and detained two protesters.

The University of Missouri (Mizzou) just can&#8217;t seem to stay out of the news.
Earlier this week, Missouri State Sen. Bob Onder (R-St. Charles County), suggested the school might have its funding cut after concerns arose that the university does not provide adequate due process to accused students. During testimony in a Tuesday hearing, <a href="https://www.kansascity.com/latest-news/article226587699.html">The Kansas City Star reported</a>, Columbia, MS, attorney Chris Slusher said students accused of sexual assault regularly have their due process rights violated. In one example, he said a school gave him five days to put together a defense for an accused student. He also said schools appear to ignore exculpatory evidence.
&#8220;That&#8217;s the University of Missouri&#8217;s policy?&#8221; Onder asked after Slusher mentioned the five-day defense. Slusher replied, &#8220;Yes.&#8221;
&#8220;They might need to be asked that in appropriations hearings, too,&#8221; Onder said.
The testimony is in regard to a Title IX bill introduced in the state that would provide basic due process rights to accused students, a bill described <a href="https://www.kansascity.com/news/politics-government/article225240190.html">as negatively as possible</a> by the Star for doing so. In its article about Onder&#8217;s comment, the Star described the bill as one that &#8220;would shift the balance of power in Missouri farther toward the accused than any other state.&#8221;
In reality, the bill provides basic fairness absent in just about every state right now when it comes to college males accused of sexual assault.
In another article, the Star describes the main points of the bill but couches them in terms that try to diminish the fact that they are what people accused of heinous crimes receive in a criminal court. The article, titled &#8220;Proposed Missouri Title IX changes would give accused more power than any other state,&#8221; describes basic due process rights like cross-examination and the ability to see the evidence against someone thusly:

Both versions would borrow judges from the existing administrative court system to hear appeals from students punished by universities for sexual misconduct. The Senate and House bills would both entitle the accused to see the evidence against them and ban schools from declining to consider evidence. The House version alone would allow cross examination of the accused, a particularly controversial provision that critics say re-victimizes survivors.
</blockquote>
&#8220;Entitle&#8221; them to see the evidence against them, how awful!
Further, the Star reports that the bill would allow students to sue their university if the administrative courts find the school did not provide the student due process, and allow the attorney general to punish universities for not providing constitutional rights. The horror.
Finally, the bill also allows falsely accused students to sue their accuser. It appears to need a slight rewording to ensure this only pertains to proven false accusations and not accusations where there is simply not enough evidence.
The icing on the cake for the Star article is quoting Wendy Murphy, a woman who consistently trashed the falsely accused Duke Lacrosse players and refused to apologize for her statements.
Onder&#8217;s thinly veiled threat is unlikely to happen, as other Republicans in the state dismissed his idea.
Mizzou has been under a microscope for years after one of its former associate professors, Melissa Click, <a href="https://www.washingtonexaminer.com/melissa-click-claims-she-was-fired-because-shes-white">threatened a student journalist</a> for filming campus protests. This action brought national shame to the school, which would go on to <a href="https://www.washingtonexaminer.com/mizzou-closes-two-dorms-due-to-lack-of-students">report lower admissions</a>, leading to millions in lost tuition and the closing of two dorms. As to the school&#8217;s campus sexual assault policies, an administrator <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/39732/mizzou-official-claims-tall-men-asking-out-short-ashe-schow">recently said during testimony</a> in a lawsuit against the school that a student could hold &#8220;power&#8221; over another student simply for being physically larger.

When the Mizzou football team vowed to quit all football-related activities in November 2015 until the university system president was removed or resigned, The New York Times cheered the players for &#8220;<a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2015/11/09/us/missouri-football-players-boycott-in-protest-of-university-president.html?mcubz=1">lending heft</a>&#8221; to the racial activists&#8217; cause. Two years later, the Times had to <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2017/07/09/us/university-of-missouri-enrollment-protests-fallout.html?mcubz=1">admit</a> that all the campus hysteria and the administration&#8217;s decision to cave to it turned out to be exactly what many predicted it would be: an absolute &#8220;<a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2017/07/09/us/university-of-missouri-enrollment-protests-fallout.html?mcubz=1">disaster</a>&#8221; for the university. Over the next two years, freshmen enrollment dropped a stunning 35%, forcing the school to shut down seven dorms and lay off over 400 employees. As for the football team, which saw <a href="http://www.columbiatribune.com/ba682f8f-8c74-544d-b562-d6f09390b55c.html">millions</a> in donations disappear overnight, well, it&#8217;s now a full-fledged dumpster fire.
Following a brutal 2016 season, the Mizzou Tigers have started off <a href="http://www.foxsports.com/college-football/missouri-tigers-team">2017</a> by getting torched by three of their four opponents. Mizzou&#8217;s only win so far is over the miserable Missouri State Bears (which is also currently 1-3). Against the three Power Five conference teams they&#8217;ve played so far, the Tigers have been outscored by a total of 81 points. They lost 31-13 to middling South Carolina, were hammered 35-3 by mediocre Purdue, and were annihilated 51-14 by an offensively-challenged Auburn.
In the <a href="http://www.foxsports.com/college-football/missouri-tigers-team-schedule?season=2016">2016</a>, the year after letting the racial protests eclipse football, Mizzou had an abysmal season. They didn&#8217;t even come close to getting a bowl berth, going just 4 and 8 and winning a grand total of two SEC games. Their only other two wins came against Delaware State and Eastern Michigan.
As the once cheerleading Times was forced to <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2017/07/09/us/university-of-missouri-enrollment-protests-fallout.html?mcubz=1">acknowledge </a>in July, the university that really got the campus racial protest movement going is now a lesson in what happens when an administration allows social justice activists to lay siege to an institution.

It was a moment of triumph for the protesting students. But it has been a disaster for the university.

While the Tigers&#8217; failing football team might be one of the more glaring of the consequences, the real story is the 180-degree reversal of the university&#8217;s once upward trend. The 35% decrease in freshmen enrollment over the last two years is even more devastating in light of the growth the university was experiencing before the protests. And the administration itself has been forced to admit that the fallout from the campus hysteria is what&#8217;s driving their decline.
&#8220;The university administration acknowledges that the main reason [for the sharp decline in enrollment] is a backlash from the events of 2015, as the campus has been shunned by students and families put off by, depending on their viewpoint, a culture of racism or one where protesters run amok,&#8221; the Times reports.
&#8220;The general consensus was that it was because of the aftermath of what happened in November 2015,&#8221; admitted the new system president Mun Choi. &#8220;There were students from both in state and out of state that just did not apply, or those who did apply but decided not to attend.&#8221;
Mizzou proved to be the flashpoint of what would become a wave of racial protests sweeping campuses over the next few months and years, with social justice activists emboldened by Mizzou&#8217;s president and chancellor resigning amid unfounded accusations of &#8220;racism&#8221; and &#8220;insensitivity.&#8221; And while the administration bent over backwards to appease the protesters, enrollment numbers show that the biggest decline came among minorities:

Students of all races have shunned Missouri, but the drop in freshman enrollment last fall was strikingly higher among blacks, at 42%, than among whites, at 21%. (A racial breakdown was not yet available for this fall&#8217;s freshman class.)
Black students were already a small minority. They made up 10% of the freshman class in 2012, a proportion that fell to just 6% last fall.

Meanwhile, the seven dorms the university can no longer fill with students are now being converted into <a href="http://www.stltoday.com/news/local/education/sold-out-football-fans-fill-dorms-left-empty-at-mizzou/article_c1c42a07-c994-59e2-907b-31a5761c7df8.html">makeshift hotel rooms</a> for the fans still willing to show up to the games. &#8220;We had a total loss of about $5 million, so you&#8217;re talking zero (dollars) if we do nothing versus $60,000 (three games in) &#8212; of course it&#8217;s worth it,&#8221; said Mizzou spokesman Christian Basi about the dorm room rental program. But if the team keeps playing like it has over the last two seasons, the school shouldn&#8217;t get its hopes up about making much off of that desperate venture.
While Mizzou suffers for its handling of social justice activists, the NFL has now fully embraced the national anthem protest &#8220;movement.&#8221; Will the league fare like the Tigers? Declining ratings and recent polls on the issue suggest it just might.

UPDATE: Two Years After Embracing Racial Protests, Mizzou Football Is A Dumpster Fire

After it was <a href="http://www.dailywire.com/news/18010/mizzou-loses-applicants-thanks-political-hank-berrien">reported</a> at the end of June that the University of Missouri, crippled by a plunge in enrollment after its debacle over charges of racism in 2015, was attempting to recoup its losses by renting dorm rooms to football weekend visitors, there is now this: <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2017/07/09/us/university-of-missouri-enrollment-protests-fallout.html?smid=tw-nytimes&amp;smtyp=cur">The New York Times</a> reports that the university is temporarily closing seven dormitories and cutting over 400 positions, including those of some non-tenured faculty members.
You might expect that the decline in enrollment occurred primarily among whites, after the <a href="http://www.dailywire.com/news/1020/mizzou-students-revolted-over-four-racist-ben-shapiro">flimsily-supported</a> racism charges of 2015 <a href="http://www.dailywire.com/news/980/students-shut-down-university-missouri-over-racism-ben-shapiro">resulted</a> in the resignation of the university&#8217;s president; The Daily Wire <a href="http://www.dailywire.com/news/16288/university-missouri-decided-take-black-lives-elliott-hamilton">reported</a>, &#8220;Many parents and alumni <a href="https://heatst.com/culture-wars/inside-the-fallout-at-mizzou/">responded</a> by refusing to contribute money to the public university. For example, donations to its athletics department dropped 72% last year.&#8221;
But here&#8217;s the big surprise: as the Times notes: &#8220;Students of all races have shunned Missouri, but the drop in freshman enrollment last fall was strikingly higher among blacks, at 42%, than among whites, at 21%.&#8221;
Mun Choi, the new University of Missouri System president, told the Times, &#8220;The general consensus was that it was because of the aftermath of what happened in November 2015. There were students from both in-state and out-of-state that just did not apply, or those who did apply but decided not to attend.&#8221;
Things have gotten so precarious that the library <a href="http://www.columbiamissourian.com/news/higher_education/mu-libraries-posts-wish-list-of-books-they-can-t/article_5a7fb364-5534-11e7-927a-cbcd00ab8f2e.html">is asking for donations</a> to buy 400 books.

Now the University of Missouri is attempting to recoup some of its massive losses by renting dorm rooms to football weekend visitors. As <a href="http://www.columbiatribune.com/news/20170622/mu-to-rent-residence-hall-rooms-on-football-weekends">The Columbia Tribune</a> reports, &#8220;The university has closed seven residence halls with 1,461 beds. During the UM Board of Curators meeting Thursday, MU Vice Chancellor for Operations Gary Ward said a website is available for people to reserve <a href="https://orgsync.com/161675/forms/264891">two-bedroom, four-bed suites</a> for $120 a night.&#8221;
Ward told the Tribune that he didn&#8217;t think local hotels would mind, asserting, &#8220;My understanding, and this would have to be verified with them, is the hotels are full anyway, so we won&#8217;t be competing on game days. We could be competing with out-of-town hotels.&#8221;
Amy Schneider, director of the Columbia Convention and Visitors Bureau, which is completely funded by room taxes paid by Columbia hotels, said, &#8220;I will probably have hotels contact me and talk to me. I&#8217;ll need to contact Gary Ward to get more info and talk to city hall and see what they know about it, to see what can and can&#8217;t be done.&#8221;
Ward noted that the university&#8217;s current backlog is $748 million, increasing $35 million per year.
From the beginning of the 21st century to 2015, Mizzou&#8217;s student body increased from roughly 23,000 students to 35,448 in 2015. But now, roughly 1,000 more beds are available in residence halls than incoming freshmen.

Over a year and a half after the infamous <a href="http://www.dailywire.com/news/1083/top-six-things-you-need-know-about-robert-kraychik">#Concerned1950</a> students made waves at the University of Missouri, the university is finally reaping the benefits of caving into the Black Lives Matter rhetoric. According to Heat Street, the <a href="https://heatst.com/culture-wars/mizzou-enrollment-drops-again-after-notorious-protests/?mod=sm_tw_post">incoming freshman class</a> at Mizzou is only 4,009 students. This is a staggering 35% decrease from the entering class in Fall 2015 when the protests occurred following <a href="http://www.dailywire.com/news/1020/mizzou-students-revolted-over-four-racist-ben-shapiro">four questionable incidents</a> on campus.

This is the second year in a row that Mizzou has seen its freshman class decline, a drop directly linked to the raucous Fall 2015 protests, which contributed to the resignation of both the university&#8217;s president and its chancellor.
The raucous protests &#8212; which were sparked by various incident of alleged racism, racist graffiti and &#8220;hate crimes&#8221; on campus &#8212; were enormously damaging to the university&#8217;s reputation, scaring away prospective students in droves.

As a result of the dramatic decrease in enrollment at Mizzou, seven residence halls will be &#8220;offline.&#8221; This comes as a result of the considerable backlash that the University received for how it handled itself following the self-righteous protests. Many parents and alumni <a href="https://heatst.com/culture-wars/inside-the-fallout-at-mizzou/">responded</a> by refusing to contribute money to the public university. For example, donations to its athletics department dropped 72% last year.

University Of Missouri Decided To Take Black Lives Matter Seriously. The Result: Nobody Enrolled.

Muhiyidin Elamin Moye, a Black Lives Matter activist, was arrested for disorderly conduct by police in Charleston, South Carolina after he leapt toward a man hoisting a Confederate flag. The Washington Post <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/post-nation/wp/2017/02/23/with-a-flying-leap-this-activist-tried-to-take-down-a-confederate-flag-in-charleston/?postshare=5331487947212830&amp;tid=ss_tw&amp;utm_term=.05fb6bc9ef42">reported</a> that the event occurred on February 22 near the College of Charleston, where James Bessenger attempted to fly the secessionist symbol in protest to an event on campus.

The College of Charleston invited Bree Newsome, an activist <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/post-nation/wp/2015/06/27/woman-takes-down-confederate-flag-in-front-of-south-carolina-statehouse/?tid=a_inl&amp;utm_term=.122d1652441c">famous for scaling the flagpole</a> in front of the South Carolina statehouse that flew the Confederate flag, to make an appearance on campus. Bessenger, who is the chairman of the South Carolina Secessionist Party, decided to counter-protest her appearance, taking issue with the possibility of members of the college community &#8220;glorifying what she had done.&#8221;
Five minutes after Bessenger hoisted the flag, Moye decided to act. Here was his justification for charging Bessenger:

I looked at our elders and I saw, like, fear in their eyes. And I saw them back up, almost. That was the moment for me. We&#8217;re not going to pass this on another generation. Not another generation of people are going to be intimidated by this flag.
</blockquote>
This is how microaggression culture justifies macroaggressive behavior. After taking offense from Bessenger&#8217;s peaceful protest, Moye believed it was just to leap over a barricade and attack Bessenger instead of engaging with him civilly. Naturally, his leftist allies celebrated Moye&#8217;s actions, referring to him as a hero. This is a problem that Daily Wire Editor-in-Chief Ben Shapiro has continuously emphasized in his <a href="http://www.dailywire.com/news/1262/watch-ben-shapiros-address-mizzou-truth-daily-wire">lectures</a> and his <a href="http://www.dailywire.com/news/1073/what-are-white-privilege-and-microaggressions-ben-shapiro">writing</a>. Here is how he rationalized the behavior at the University of Missouri nearly a year and a half ago:

Now, the beautiful thing about microaggressions is the term itself: microaggressions. They aren&#8217;t &#8220;micro-offensive statements.&#8221; Or &#8220;micro-insults.&#8221; They&#8217;re tiny aggressions, almost physical in nature. Such aggressions, as with all aggressions, call for punishment. Calling a transgender female &#8211; a man who thinks he is a woman &#8211; &#8220;sir&#8221; is grounds for legal battery, according to the left, because it is simply too microaggressive. Words may not break our bones, but they justify sticks and stones. That&#8217;s why assistant professor Melissa Click of Mizzou felt justified in calling for some &#8220;muscle&#8221; to deal with a reporter who wanted to take pictures of hunger-striking students: &#8220;She said she felt threatened by [reporter Mark Schierbecker]&#8230;She said she felt that she and the students were being aggressed upon.&#8221; That&#8217;s why black students at Mizzou said today that they wanted white students moved away from them so they could have a &#8220;safe space&#8221; &#8212; &#8220;white privilege&#8221; itself, the status of whiteness, represents a &#8220;microaggression&#8221; in need of full-on racist rectification.

As long as the left continues to think in terms of microaggressions, it will continue to justify violence against those whom they disagree with.

Black Lives Matter Protester Tries To Rip Down Confederate Flag, Gets Arrested

I am a conservative professor at a very progressive mid-sized public university, UNC-Wilmington. For years, I have been fighting a frustrating battle against the forces of campus censorship. In fact, I have been doing it for well over a decade. I made very little progress until the UNCW Board of Trustees hired a conservative Republican chancellor named Jose &#8220;Zito&#8221; Sartarelli.
Within weeks of assuming his duties, Sartarelli&#8217;s administration overturned an unlawful prosecution of a student for expressing his First Amendment rights. This was shortly after I helped the student get in touch with Foundation for Individual Rights in Education, or FIRE. Unlike past administrations, our conservative chancellor acted quickly and decisively when the non-partisan FIRE wrote to explain a) the general dangers associated with the conduct code the student was accused of violating and b) the specific dangers associated with prosecuting the student according to the facts of his particular case.
Given that the student was a war veteran, I was especially pleased to see that the administration ultimately defended him against a heavy-handed prosecution by administrators in the Division of Student Affairs. The speech that led to the prosecution was childish and unbecoming of a college student. But the First Amendment nonetheless protected the student&#8217;s bad speech.
About six months after that incident, I wrote a letter asking the Sartarelli administration to conduct an audit of UNCW speech policies with the help of FIRE. The reason I made the request was because I sincerely believed that our university had three separate policies, which violated the First Amendment. The letter I sent was also sent to each member of the UNCW Board of Trustees.
Within hours of sending the letter I received an encouraging reply from UNCW Trustee Dennis Burgard who is also a conservative Republican. To make matters even better, I received a phone call from Mr. Burgard within 48 hours asking how he could help the university move forward by working with FIRE.
Since that time, the speech policy audit has been completed by FIRE. I was somewhat surprised to hear that the analysis identified eight unconstitutional policies &#8211; rather than the three that were named in my letter. That bad news was trumped by some better news I received in April when it came to my attention that UNCW was working actively with FIRE to remedy all existing problems with student policies.
When I returned from spending the summer teaching and writing in Colorado, I got what is perhaps the best news I&#8217;ve ever heard concerning free speech rights at our university. Specifically, I was informed that the administration had eliminated eight of its unlawful policies and was seeking input on how to modify the ninth. This is simply a staggering achievement. In just a few short months the Sartarelli administration has done more to preserve and protect student speech than any previous UNCW administration.
The Seahawk Respect Compact is the final problematic policy, which is yet to be remedied. I understand that my university is now seeking both student and faculty input before making any changes in the compact. I understand that simply by making the compact voluntary rather than mandatory, UNCW can resolve the First Amendment issue entirely. That is good news because it means my university is probably on the verge of earning a coveted &#8220;green light&#8221; rating from FIRE. The rating is only given to universities that have no policies infringing on free speech. Presently, only 22 colleges and universities in America have earned that distinction. When UNCW is &#8220;given the green light,&#8221; so to speak, there will be two major advantages:
<ol>
<li>UNCW will earn praise in the court of public opinion that will translate into success in recruitment. Estimates suggest that Mizzou has lost over two thousand students in the wake of its publicly shameful assault on freedom of speech and freedom of the press &#8211; all in the name of &#8220;safety&#8221; and &#8220;inclusion.&#8221; UNCW is poised to seize a grand opportunity by attracting students who are too mature and principled to tolerate such nonsense on a university campus.</li>
<li>UNCW will see a significant upswing in external donations. In fact, just two days ago I received a phone call from an employee at a large organization in Washington D.C. He called me after a big donor contacted him with interest in investing in UNCW. The donor specifically stated that his interest was piqued by an awareness of the policy reforms happening at UNCW.</li>
</ol>
A few years ago, Republicans in North Carolina won control of the House and the Senate. Our state also elected a Republican Governor. That meant we were finally able to get a critical mass of Republicans on the UNC Board of Governors and on the individual Boards of Trustees. As soon as that happened the leftist faculty began to decry a hostile Republican takeover of the system. In fact, they suggested that the GOP would try to dismantle the UNC system altogether.
There is some truth to the accusation. The Republicans are now systematically dismantling the well-entrenched system of campus censorship. Administrators posing as principled educators built that system for decades. Unfortunately, the &#8220;liberal&#8221; faculty simply fiddled while the constitution was burning. The Republicans now have the opportunity to ride in, save the day, and justly claim credit as the party of free speech.
Of course, censorship is nothing more than intellectual bondage. That is why it will flourish as long as the party of slavery controls our public universities.

The University of Missouri has officially lost 23 percent of its entering Fall 2016 freshman class, due to an overwhelming drop in college applications received, the Daily Caller <a href="http://dailycaller.com/2016/08/24/black-lives-matter-has-officially-cost-mizzou-2100-students/">reported</a>.
The incoming Mizzou freshman class this year amounts to 4,799 students, down 1,400 from last year&#8217;s class of 6,211 college freshmen. Overall enrollment at the university is down by 2,200 students, according to the school&#8217;s annual report. 
School administrators predicted the school would face decreasing enrollment numbers due to the bad publicity it was receiving thanks to intense racial protests on campus involving racial activist groups such as Black Lives Matter and Concerned Student 1950. Earlier in March, the school&#8217;s interim chancellor, Hank Foley, predicted a drop of 1,500 students by Fall 2016- yet drop rates have increased drastically. 
Foley had <a href="http://www.outkickthecoverage.com/mizzou-protests-lead-to-plunge-in-freshmen-massive-budget-deficits-030916">emailed</a> students about the school&#8217;s budget issues, which included a loss of $32 million four months after racial protests and demands had made national news headlines. He wrote:

Dear university community,
I am writing to you today to confirm that we project a very significant budget shortfall due to an unexpected sharp decline in first-year enrollments and student retention this coming fall. I wish I had better news.
The anticipated declinesâwhich total about 1,500 fewer students than current enrollment at MUâ in addition to a small number of necessary investments are expected to leave us with an approximate $32 million budget gap for next year. A smaller entering freshman class will have continuing impact on finances as they progress toward their degrees at MU&#8230; 
Given that these declines are the result of drops in first-time student enrollments and retention of enrolled students, there are a number of initiatives and projects currently underway to stem the tide in both the short- and long-term. We are reaching out to admitted students who have not yet enrolled and to their parents with phone calls, Skype calls, videos and a text campaign â all of which involve current students, faculty and administrators throughout the university. We also are in the process of adding more out-of-state recruiters and we are redesigning all our Admissions materials to ensure they meet the expectations and needs of prospective students. I have also asked Admissions to develop a new web-based admissions platform that is streamlined and that will involve live feedback to prospective students. The goal is to make it easy to apply and to know very quickly what their prospects are for admission to MU. The key is to be faster, more personal and much more interactive.
</blockquote>
Foley&#8217;s letter continued by outlining other budget restrictions included a hiring freeze on faculty or staff, vice chancellors, vice provosts, and athletics program directors. Foley had also announced the suspension of Mizzou&#8217;s annual merit scholarships and programs. In September 2015, Mizzou <a href="https://www.insidehighered.com/news/2015/09/29/80-colleges-and-universities-announce-plan-new-application-and-new-approach">joined</a> a coalition of college campuses across the board that were modifying their college applications to make tuition more affordable for low-income students.
Ultimately, those measures seemed to have little effect on the school&#8217;s rapid budget and enrollment declines, which forced Mizzou to shut down several dormitories.
Since the virulent protests led by Concerned Student 1950, demands that Mizzou president Thomas Wolfe resign from his post because of what was considered an ineffective reaction to racial tensions; added to the incident involving a particular professor Melissa Click, who threatened and yelled at a student journalist to leave a campus protest, the Mizzou campus climate has been a mess. Racial protests at Mizzou were since mimicked at college campuses all over the country, and Mizzou became a symbol for the purported victories of Black Lives Matter and its supporters. 
&#8220;Wow! Though I&#8217;m not surprised,&#8221; one mother wrote in a <a href="http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/university-missouri-columbia/1843111-applications-down-at-mizzou-p3.html">forum</a> discussing Mizzou&#8217;s late enrollment declines. &#8220;My [daughter] had no interest of going to Missouri (the state, not just Mizzou) after all the news coverage.&#8221;
Undoubtedly, students and their parents seem to be wary of such campus issues, and the school&#8217;s recent enrollment numbers reflect that.

University Of Missouri Applications Drop By 23% Thanks To Black Lives Matter Insanity

Remember last autumn when the University of Missouri football team threatened to boycott a game because of supposed racism on campus, demanded that University president Tim Wolfe resign, and triggered a campus protest, all of which catalyzed a 25% decrease in enrollment and a <a href="http://dailycaller.com/2016/03/10/shocker-after-caving-to-protests-mizzou-has-huge-budget-gap/">$32 million drop</a> in its budget?
That action was <a href="http://dailycaller.com/2016/06/19/espn-to-give-mizzou-football-team-humanitarian-award-for-black-lives-matter-strike/#ixzz4CJi2Bfzz&quot; ">honored</a> by ESPN, which announced on Friday that that it would give the football team <a href="http://espnmediazone.com/us/press-releases/2016/06/second-annual-sports-humanitarian-year-awards-presented-espn-take-place-july-12/">a special humanitarian award</a>, the Stuart Scott ENSPIRE award, at its second annual Sports Humanitarian of the Year awards, held with the ESPY awards on July 12. ESPN said of the Stuart Scott award that it &#8220;celebrates someone that has taken risk and used an innovative approach to helping the disadvantaged through the power of sports.&#8221;
ESPN gushed:

Racial tensions were becoming increasingly strained at the University of Missouri last fall. Frustrations gave rise to protests &#8212; one of the most notable coming when a student at the school began a hunger strike. Students were demanding action, and the Mizzou Tigers football team stepped in and announced that they would boycott their upcoming game unless changes were made. The players took a huge risk &#8212; their scholarships could have been revoked and their futures hung in the balance. But their actions indicated it was a risk worth taking to help bring action to this critical issue.
</blockquote>
Of course, ESPN ignored the fact that the supposedly racist acts that were alleged to have taken place at the university had no basis in reality. As Daily Wire Editor-in-Chief Ben Shapiro wrote last November, &#8220;According to press accounts, four specific incidents drove the ouster of the liberal president of University of Missouri, Tim Wolfe. Three of the four have no evidence to support them, and the remaining incident was rightly investigated by Wolfe&#8217;s administration.&#8221;

Of course, ESPN has no interest in the truth; perceived racism is as good as the real thing, and it gives the leftist sports network to engage in virtue signaling in a massive way. This is the same network that gives <a href="http://espn.go.com/espys/2015/story/_/id/13264599/caitlyn-jenner-accepts-arthur-ashe-courage-award-espys-ashe2015">awards for courage</a> to delusional men who think they are women, so giving an award to a football team for its own virtue signaling isn&#8217;t that much of a stretch.
