Leading congressional <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/schumer-rejects-gop-proposal-to-link-bill-requiring-voters-prove-citizenship-with-spending-measure" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Democrats</a>, the <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/white-house" target="_blank" rel="noopener">White House</a>, and even <a href="https://thehill.com/homenews/4862402-speaker-johnson-cr-government-shutdown/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">some Republicans</a> have voiced opposition to the proposal, which would provide funding for the federal government for six months — through March 28 — in addition to instituting the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility <a href="https://www.congress.gov/bill/118th-congress/house-bill/8281" target="_blank" rel="noopener">(SAVE) Act</a>. A government shutdown could happen next month if a deal to fund the various federal agencies is not reached by the end of September, as lawmakers have been unable to pass a full slate of appropriations bills to cover the entire 2025 fiscal year. Still, Johnson voiced confidence in charting the course ahead.
&#8220;No vote today, because we&#8217;re in the consensus building business here in Congress with small majorities,&#8221; Johnson told reporters at the U.S. Capitol. &#8220;That&#8217;s what you do. The Office of Management and Budget (OMB) released a <a href="https://www.whitehouse.gov/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/H.R.-9494%E2%80%94-Continuing-Appropriations-and-Other-Matters-Act-2025-Final.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">statement</a> that said the Biden administration &#8220;strongly opposes&#8221; the passage of H.R.9494, which would provide funding for the federal government for six months — through March 28 — in addition to instituting the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility <a href="https://www.congress.gov/bill/118th-congress/house-bill/8281" target="_blank" rel="noopener">(SAVE) Act</a>.
&#8220;Instead of working in a bipartisan manner to keep the Government open and provide emergency funding for disaster needs, House Republicans have chosen brinkmanship,&#8221; the OMB said in its statement of policy, adding later, &#8220;If the President were presented with H.R. 9494, he would veto it.&#8221;
The SAVE Act, which <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/nearly-all-house-dems-vote-against-bill-requiring-voters-prove-citizenship" target="_blank" rel="noopener">passed</a> the House as a standalone bill in July with some bipartisan support but never got taken up by the Democrat-controlled Senate, aims to require that individuals show proof of U.S. citizenship to register to vote in elections for federal office and pushes states to remove non-citizens from voter rolls.
Proponents of the SAVE Act argue the bill is necessary to shore up the security of the voting process. In vouching for the legislation, House Speaker <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/mike-johnson" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Mike Johnson</a> (R-LA) <a href="https://mikejohnson.house.gov/uploadedfiles/save_act_white_paper.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">released</a> a white paper that warned of a National Voter Registration Act “loophole” in which states do not ask for proof of citizenship when registering an individual to vote in federal elections and cited evidence of noncitizens appearing on voter rolls in places such as Massachusetts, Ohio, and Virginia.
&#8220;There is a danger that the NVRA loophole, combined with the Biden Administration’s willful disregard of U.S. immigration law that has allowed the U.S. foreign-born population to grow by 5.1 million people in the last two years alone and by 6.6 million since President Biden took office, could lead to millions of noncitizens registering to vote,&#8221; the paper said. &#8220;Should this happen, it would jeopardize the integrity of our elections, turning the outcome of the 2024 election over to foreign persons and potentially even foreign interests.&#8221;
The OMB&#8217;s policy statement claimed the SAVE Act is &#8220;unnecessary&#8221; because it is already a federal crime for noncitizens to vote in federal elections and states already have &#8220;effective safeguards&#8221; in place. Further, the bill would make it &#8220;much harder for all eligible Americans to register to vote and increase the risk that eligible voters are purged from voter rolls,&#8221; the statement added.
Congress is running out of time to reach a deal on a short-term spending measure if lawmakers returning to Washington, D.C., from their summer recess are unable to pass appropriations legislation to fund the various federal agencies for the coming fiscal year. A government shutdown could happen by the beginning of October without some kind of agreement in the coming weeks.
Democrat lawmakers, joined by <a href="https://thehill.com/homenews/4862402-speaker-johnson-cr-government-shutdown/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">at least</a> <a href="https://x.com/RepThomasMassie/status/1832980087274193187" target="_blank" rel="noopener">a couple</a> of Republicans, have <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/schumer-rejects-gop-proposal-to-link-bill-requiring-voters-prove-citizenship-with-spending-measure" target="_blank" rel="noopener">come out against</a> the House GOP plan to link a six-month spending bill combined with the SAVE Act. There also seems to be disagreement over how far a continuing resolution should go. Axios <a href="https://www.axios.com/2024/09/08/spending-bill-congress-white-house?utm_medium=social&amp;utm_source=twitter&amp;utm_campaign=editorial" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reported</a> Democrats and the White House prefer a three-month spending measure, which would lead to a December lame-duck session on government funding — once it is clear which party won the presidential election and control of the two chambers of Congress in 2025.
The OMB statement criticized the six-month continuing resolution on a number of fronts, saying it would be particularly &#8220;irresponsible&#8221; in regard to national security because it would &#8220;would erode our military advantage relative to the People’s Republic of China, degrade readiness, and fail to provide the support our troops deserve.&#8221; It also said a &#8220;CR ending March 28th also takes the Congress dangerously close to the deadline when across-the-board cuts would come into place next year, as dictated by the Fiscal Responsibility Act of 2023.&#8221;
Fox News <a href="https://x.com/ChadPergram/status/1833225328774295567" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reported</a> on Monday that Johnson said he believes the House can pass a continuing resolution with the provision of requiring proof of citizenship. In a post to X, senior congressional correspondent Chad Pergram <a href="https://x.com/ChadPergram/status/1833225328774295567" target="_blank" rel="noopener">noted</a> that he asked the speaker what his fallback position was, to which Johnson replied, &#8220;There is no fallback position. This is a righteous fight.&#8221;

At issue is how the Minnesota-based nonprofit Feeding Our Future (FOF) was <a href="https://www.justice.gov/usao-mn/pr/five-defendants-found-guilty-their-roles-250-million-fraud-scheme" target="_blank" rel="noopener">implicated</a> in what the Department of Justice (DOJ) described as a $250 million fraud scheme that &#8220;exploited&#8221; an operation meant to feed hungry kids in need during the COVID pandemic.

&#8220;Statements in the press by you and your representatives indicate that you and other executive officers were involved, or had knowledge of, MDE’s administration of the FCNP and responsibilities and actions regarding the massive fraud,&#8221; she added.
The committee also sent subpoenas for documents to MDE Commissioner Willie Jett, Agriculture Secretary Thomas Vilsack, and Agriculture Department Inspector General Phyllis Fong. Walz and the others received a September 18 deadline.

In 2022, federal prosecutors announced charges against dozens of defendants linked to FOF in what the DOJ described at the time as being &#8220;the largest COVID-19 fraud scheme in the nation.&#8221;
In June of this year, U.S. Attorney Andrew Lugar <a href="https://www.justice.gov/usao-mn/pr/five-defendants-found-guilty-their-roles-250-million-fraud-scheme" target="_blank" rel="noopener">announced</a> that five defendants had been convicted by a federal jury, and a total of 23 individuals had been &#8220;held accountable&#8221; for their roles in the $250 million fraud scheme.
Foxx&#8217;s letter to Walz noted that the governor, when asked about not holding agencies accountable and whether MDE employees would be disciplined, <a href="https://www.startribune.com/we-can-always-do-better-gov-tim-walz-says-of-education-department-after-report-criticizes-oversight-of-feeding-our-future/600374449" target="_blank" rel="noopener">replied</a>, &#8220;This wasn’t malfeasance.&#8221;
Walz also stated, &#8220;There’s not a single state employee that was implicated in doing anything that was illegal. They simply didn’t do as much due diligence as they should’ve.&#8221;
The Office of the Legislative Auditor in Minnesota <a href="https://www.auditor.leg.state.mn.us/sreview/pdf/2024-mdefof.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">released</a> a report this summer that said MDE&#8217;s oversight of FOF had been &#8220;inadequate&#8221; and listed ways in which it &#8220;created opportunities for fraud.&#8221;
A spokesperson for Walz told <a href="https://www.axios.com/local/twin-cities/2024/06/14/feeding-our-future-fraud-minnesota-department-education-audit" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Axios</a> his administration &#8220;made many of the corrective actions suggested by the OLA [Office of the Legislative Auditor] and taken &#8216;strong steps to find and eliminate any remaining vulnerabilities in government programs.'&#8221;

An Oregon Democrat running for Congress in a swing district sponsored legislation that sent hundreds of thousands of dollars to a program that discriminates against U.S. citizens and offers down payment assistance to illegal immigrants.
In 2022, State Rep. Janelle Bynum co-sponsored <a href="https://olis.oregonlegislature.gov/liz/2022R1/Measures/Overview/SB1579#:~:text=Directs%20Oregon%20Business%20Development%20Department,equity%20among%20disadvantaged%20individuals%2C%20families%2C" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Senate Bill 1579</a>, which implemented an <a href="https://olis.oregonlegislature.gov/liz/2022R1/Downloads/MeasureAnalysisDocument/64140">Economic Equity Investment Program</a> &#8220;to award grants to qualified organizations that provide culturally responsive services to disadvantaged individuals.&#8221; One grant recipient was the Hacienda Community Development Corp., which offers $30,000 in down payment assistance in Oregon &#8220;only for people who are not American citizens,&#8221; The Daily Caller <a href="https://dailycaller.com/2024/08/21/hacienda-community-development-oregon-non-citizens-down-payments/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reported</a> last month. The bill allocated a $692,775 grant to Hacienda, the New York Post <a href="https://nypost.com/2024/08/24/us-news/first-time-homebuyers-in-oregon-get-30k-grant-americans-excluded/?utm_medium=social&amp;utm_campaign=nypost&amp;utm_source=twitter" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reported</a>.
Bynum <a href="https://www.janellebynum.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">says</a> she &#8220;knows how to fight for all Oregon families,&#8221; and her <a href="https://www.janellebynum.com/issues">campaign website</a> lists &#8220;addressing housing affordability&#8221; at the top of her platform.
&#8220;Too many Oregonians are priced out of their communities or unable to afford a home. That’s why in the state legislature, I worked on efforts to lower the cost of housing, protect tenants, and ensure low-income earners could pay their utility bills,&#8221; Bynum <a href="https://www.janellebynum.com/issues/addressing-housing-affordability-nbsp" target="_blank" rel="noopener">says</a>. &#8220;I’ll continue to fight for housing affordability and remove red tape for housing construction in Congress.&#8221;
The Democrat&#8217;s policy page also focuses on addressing homelessness, &#8220;taking climate action,&#8221; and &#8220;lowering the cost of health care.&#8221; Bynum does not address the border crisis or illegal immigration on her campaign website. Her office has not responded to a Daily Wire request to comment on her support for SB 1579 and Hacienda&#8217;s down payment assistance for illegal immigrants.

Bynum is in the midst of a competitive race for Oregon&#8217;s 5th Congressional District against incumbent Rep. Lori Chavez-DeRemer, a Republican. Chavez-DeRemer blasted Bynum over her support for SB 1579 in a statement to The Daily Wire.
&#8220;Last year, Oregon had the second-highest percentage of unsheltered homeless in the nation, with more unaccompanied homeless youth than any other state,&#8221; Chavez-DeRemer wrote. &#8220;While I&#8217;ve been working toward commonsense solutions to improve housing access and affordability for our citizens, my opponent was busy pushing legislation that would only help noncitizens.&#8221;
&#8220;Doling out taxpayer dollars to illegal immigrants will only worsen the problem by taking away opportunities for hardworking Oregon families, limiting the current housing supply, and driving prices even higher,&#8221; the Republican added.
More than 180,000 illegal immigrants reside in Oregon, according to a 2023 <a href="https://www.fairus.org/sites/default/files/2023-03/oregon2023.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">study</a> published by the Federation for American Immigration Reform. The illegal immigration crisis cost Oregon taxpayers $1.47 billion last year.
&#8220;While Oregon families struggle to afford a roof over their heads, Janelle Bynum is giving illegal immigrants massive taxpayer checks to buy houses. Bynum has made her extreme agenda crystal clear — criminals and illegal immigrants first, law-abiding American citizens last.&#8221; National Republican Congressional Committee Spokesman Ben Petersen told The Daily Wire.

House Oversight Committee Democrats <a href="https://oversightdemocrats.house.gov/news/press-releases/oversight-democrats-launch-investigation-allegations-trump-doj-covered-10" target="_blank" rel="noopener">announced</a> this week that they were looking into whether the Department of Justice (DOJ) improperly shut down in 2020 an inquiry into a potential $10 million bribe to Trump from Egyptian President Abdel Fatah El-Sisi in the run-up to the 2016 election, citing concerns about a report on the matter that The Washington Post published roughly one month ago.

The Washington Post <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/investigations/2024/08/02/trump-campaign-egypt-investigation/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">article</a> claimed that top DOJ officials blocked FBI agents from obtaining records for an inquiry into whether a $10 million bribe from <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/egypt" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Egypt</a> happened and factored into Trump&#8217;s decision to infuse his campaign with a similar amount of money. The report said Michael Sherwin, the acting U.S. attorney who closed the case in 2020, insisted he closed down the probe because of a lack of evidence.

And the <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/u-s-house-of-representatives" target="_blank" rel="noopener">House</a> <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/freedom-caucus" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Freedom Caucus</a>, a group of conservative that includes Roy, released a statement in August <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/freedom-caucus-unveils-plan-to-protect-trump-from-lame-duck-omnibus-shore-up-election-integrity" target="_blank" rel="noopener">calling for</a> the SAVE Act to be added to any short-term spending measure that may emerge if lawmakers are unable to pass individual appropriations bills.
Congress has until the <a href="https://spectrumnews1.com/oh/columbus/news/2024/07/29/budget-appropriations-recess-congress" target="_blank" rel="noopener">end of September</a> to pass legislation to fund the various arms of the federal government or face the prospect of a <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/government-shutdown" target="_blank" rel="noopener">shutdown</a>. Democrats may support <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/house-passes-another-short-term-spending-bill-rejecting-conservative-bid-for-border-attachment" target="_blank" rel="noopener">passing another</a> continuing resolution, but the majority of them would likely not abide by the SAVE Act being attached to it. Some have <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/biden-formally-opposes-bill-requiring-voters-prove-citizenship" target="_blank" rel="noopener">argued</a> the legislation is unnecessary and would create an undue burden on legitimate voters.

Johnson argued that when Democrats brag about a hot economy, they ignore a reality that is not quite so rosy as Americans grapple with the increased prices of goods and services.
&#8220;That&#8217;s why they&#8217;re out there, you know, touting the economy when they broke the economy, clearly,&#8221; Johnson said. &#8220;Inflation is at record highs and everyone&#8217;s struggling and they&#8217;re looking right into the camera and trying to pretend like everything&#8217;s great.&#8221;
Johnson also talked about national security and illegal immigration.
&#8220;They&#8217;ve put us in jeopardy on the world stage,&#8221; he said. &#8220;They&#8217;ve appeased our adversaries and that&#8217;s why we have hot wars around the globe right now. They&#8217;ve opened the border wide and that is a catastrophe in every city in every state around the country.&#8221;
Bringing his response to the Democratic National Convention full circle, Johnson said, &#8220;They want people to believe that what we see is not actually true, and that&#8217;s not going to work. I think they&#8217;re on a sugar high right now.&#8221;
Johnson predicted the Democrats will &#8220;come off it after the convention, and the real campaign starts after Labor Day, as it does every presidential cycle.&#8221;

Federal prosecutors unveiled 23 charges against Santos last year, including aggravated identity theft, wire fraud, and conspiracy stemming back to his 2022 campaign.
Santos had earlier <a href="https://www.cnn.com/2023/10/27/politics/george-santos-plea/index.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">pleaded not guilty</a> to the charges.
The plea deal, which the DOJ said brings a mandatory two-year minimum sentence of imprisonment and a maximum of 22 years, came before Santos&#8217; trial was expected to begin in September.
Santos &#8220;will go to prison for at least two years. He will be required to forfeit the money he made illegally. And he will be required to repay the victims that he swindled,&#8221; <a href="https://www.facebook.com/TND/videos/former-republican-rep-george-santos-is-expected-to-plead-guilty-monday/532519919118112/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a> U.S. Attorney Breon Peace.
A pair of Santos&#8217; former aides have also <a href="https://abcnews.go.com/Politics/sam-miele-fundraiser-rep-george-santos-pleads-guilty/story?id=104875146" target="_blank" rel="noopener">pleaded</a> <a href="https://abcnews.go.com/Politics/sam-miele-fundraiser-rep-george-santos-pleads-guilty/story?id=104875146" target="_blank" rel="noopener">guilty</a>.
Voters in the Long Island area elected Santos to the House in the 2022 election. He <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2022/11/08/us/elections/results-new-york-us-house-district-3.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">defeated</a> business owner and Democratic activist Robert Zimmerman.
Controversy quickly overshadowed Santos during his tenure, and within several months of him taking office, the Department of Justice announced charges.
Santos faced calls to resign and had survived <a href="https://rollcall.com/2023/11/01/rep-george-santos-easily-survives-second-attempt-to-expel-him-from-congress/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">multiple attempts</a> by colleagues to expel him from the House, but that changed following a scathing <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/u-s-house-of-representatives" target="_blank" rel="noopener">House</a> Ethics Committee <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/george-santos-says-he-wont-seek-re-election-after-release-of-ethics-report" target="_blank" rel="noopener">report</a>.
A <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/house-votes-to-expel-george-santos" target="_blank" rel="noopener">vote in December</a>, which required a two-thirds majority to succeed, resulted in his ouster in December.
In the special election that followed, Democrat Tom Suozzi <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/slim-house-gop-majority-takes-a-hit-with-dem-winning-contest-to-replace-santos" target="_blank" rel="noopener">prevailed</a> over his GOP rival, Mazi Pilip, to serve out the remainder of the term originally won by Santos.
Suozzi is now <a href="https://www.news10.com/news/ny-news/examining-the-congressional-battleground-districts-of-new-york/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">expected</a> to face off against former State Assemblymember Michael LiPetri Jr. in the 2024 election in the 3rd Congressional District for another two-year term.
Santos briefly ran a new campaign against Rep. Nick LaLota (R-NY), a Republican from a nearby district who had <a href="https://lalota.house.gov/media/press-releases/lalota-expel-santos" target="_blank" rel="noopener">pushed</a> for Santos&#8217; expulsion, but <a href="https://apnews.com/article/george-santos-congress-campaign-a4c4cc2ea7cb52a13ec9f8dfc5ede86c" target="_blank" rel="noopener">announced</a> his withdrawal from the race in April.

The conservative <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/u-s-house-of-representatives" target="_blank" rel="noopener">House</a> <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/freedom-caucus" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Freedom Caucus</a> unveiled on Monday a strategy that seeks to avoid a &#8220;lame duck&#8221; omnibus package that could extend Democrat priorities into a second term of <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/donald-trump" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Donald Trump</a> as president and would throw in a bill that requires voters to prove citizenship.
Congress has until the <a href="https://spectrumnews1.com/oh/columbus/news/2024/07/29/budget-appropriations-recess-congress" target="_blank" rel="noopener">end of September</a> to pass legislation to fund the various arms of the federal government or face the prospect of a <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/government-shutdown" target="_blank" rel="noopener">shutdown</a>, but the GOP-led House is not expected to return from summer recess until three weeks before that deadline. If lawmakers cannot pass individual spending bills, they could resort to a <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/pork-parks-and-woke-all-the-fun-features-in-1-7-trillion-omnibus" target="_blank" rel="noopener">massive omnibus</a> full of pork and perks.
The Freedom Caucus, which includes a few dozen members, &#8220;believes that House Republicans should return to Washington to continue the work of passing all 12 appropriations bills to cut spending and advance our policy priorities,&#8221; the group said in a new statement.

&#8220;If unsuccessful, in the inevitability that Congress considers a Continuing Resolution, government funding should be extended into early 2025 to avoid a lame duck omnibus that preserves Democrat spending and policies well into the next administration,&#8221; the statement continued.
Such a plan for a stop-gap measure bets against Vice President <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/kamala-harris" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Kamala Harris</a>, who replaced President <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/joe-biden" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Joe Biden</a> atop the Democratic Party&#8217;s ticket, prevailing in the November election as the group noted atop its statement that it would &#8220;ensure Democrats cannot undermine&#8221; a second Trump term with an omnibus in December.
The Freedom Caucus also called for the <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/nearly-all-house-dems-vote-against-bill-requiring-voters-prove-citizenship" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act</a>, which aims to require individuals show proof of U.S. citizenship to register to vote in elections for federal office and pushes states to remove non-citizens from voter rolls, to be added to the short-term spending bill.
&#8220;Furthermore, the Continuing Resolution should include the SAVE Act — as called for by President Trump — to prevent non-citizens from voting to preserve free and fair elections in light of the millions of illegal aliens imported by the Biden-Harris administration over the last four years,&#8221; the group said.
While the House <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/nearly-all-house-dems-vote-against-bill-requiring-voters-prove-citizenship" target="_blank" rel="noopener">passed</a> the SAVE Act in July with some bipartisan support, the Democrat-led Senate has not taken it up and the Biden administration signaled its opposition to the legislation. Democrats may rally behind the idea of a continuing resolution, but there could be a flashpoint with conservatives over the SAVE Act. House conservatives <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/house-passes-another-short-term-spending-bill-rejecting-conservative-bid-for-border-attachment" target="_blank" rel="noopener">failed to get</a> border security reforms attached to a short-term spending bill the chamber passed earlier this year.
Speaker <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/mike-johnson" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Mike Johnson</a> (R-LA) <a href="https://thehill.com/homenews/house/4815216-speaker-johnson-interview-harris-walz-trump/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">told The Hill</a> last week that lawmakers were &#8220;having some very thoughtful discussion about the pros and cons of the various strategies&#8221; on avoiding a government shutdown. He said a decision was &#8220;not yet determined, but it will be very soon.&#8221;
Sen. Mike Lee (R-UT), a Trump ally, said on Monday that he backs the Freedom Caucus&#8217;s latest plan. &#8220;This is the way. It is the last chance for Democrats (and a few Republicans) to sabotage President Trump’s next term, fund Biden’s disastrous policies, and leave the door open to illegal voting. Don’t let it happen,&#8221; Lee said in a <a href="https://x.com/SenMikeLee/status/1823030235840852227">post</a> to X.
Government spending is no small issue as the <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/national-debt" target="_blank" rel="noopener">national debt</a>, which has surged under Republican and Democrat administrations in the White House in recent years, <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/national-debt-surpasses-35-trillion-gop-raises-the-alarm" target="_blank" rel="noopener">surpassed</a> $35 trillion for the first time last month. Rep. Scott Perry (R-PA), a former chairman of the House Freedom Caucus, <a href="https://x.com/RepScottPerry/status/1817962607355298217" target="_blank" rel="noopener">warned</a> the debt was on track to reach $36 trillion by mid-November.
&#8220;Today, the U.S. national debt hit $35 trillion &#8211; that&#8217;s $104,497 PER PERSON &#8211; and by mid-November, it&#8217;ll reach $36 trillion,&#8221; Perry said on X. &#8220;The Biden-Harris administration&#8217;s push for more out-of-control spending is unacceptable, and further imperils our great Nation.&#8221;

The House task force investigating the attempted assassination of former President <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/donald-trump" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Donald Trump</a> began its work on Monday by requesting documents and briefings from top Justice Department and Homeland Security officials. 
Task force chair Mike Kelly (R-PA) and ranking member Jason Crow (D-CO) sent letters to Attorney General Merrick Garland, FBI Director Christopher Wray, Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, and Acting Secret Service Director Ronald Rowe demanding all documents related to the assassination attempt. They requested that the departments set up briefings with the task force by August 16 to coordinate the investigation. 
The letters, <a href="https://punchbowl.news/article/investigations/trump-assassination-attempt-task-force-first-official-act/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">obtained</a> by Punch Bowl News, request that the officials &#8220;produce documents and information directly to the Task Force from this point forward, including any documents and information that are in process in response to pending requests.&#8221;
The task force <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/house-votes-to-establish-task-force-on-trump-assassination-attempt" target="_blank" rel="noopener">was established</a> last month with seven Republicans and six Democrats. Several committees in both the House and Senate have already begun looking into the attack that left Trump and two of his supporters injured and one rally attendee dead. 
In addition to Kelly, other Republican lawmakers on the task force <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/house-reveals-members-of-task-force-to-investigate-trump-assassination-attempt" target="_blank" rel="noopener">include</a> Homeland Security Chairman Mark Green (R-TN) and Reps. David Joyce (R-OH), Laurel Lee (R-FL), Michael Waltz (R-FL), Clay Higgins (R-LA),  Pat Fallon (TX). Democrats include Reps. Madeleine Dean (D-PA), Chrissy Houlahan (D-PA), Glenn Ivey (D-MD), and Jared Moskowitz (D-FL).

House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) said that the task force would have subpoena authority and be handling all House inquiries into the Trump rally shooting. His office <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/house-reveals-members-of-task-force-to-investigate-trump-assassination-attempt">said</a> that the panel’s goals are to “understand what went wrong on the day of the attempted assassination,” “ensure accountability,” and “prevent such an agency failure from ever happening again.”
There are still questions about who was responsible for the security failures at the July 13 Trump rally in Butler, Pennsylvania.
