<a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/u-s-customs-and-border-protection">U.S. Customs and Border Protection Commissioner</a> Chris Magnus resigned Saturday after top Biden administration officials threatened to fire the border chief if he refused to step down.
Magnus initially denied the resignation request from Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro N. Mayorkas, who said he would recommend President Joe Biden dismiss Magnus after losing confidence in leadership at the border. However, following an interview with<a href="https://www.latimes.com/politics/story/2022-11-11/border-protection-commissioner-chris-magnus-say-he-has-been-asked-to-resign-but-refuses"> The Los Angeles Times,</a> where Magnus expressed a lack of justification to give notice, he complied with the bid from DHS officials. But he said his defiance of an order not to meet with border patrol chiefs in El Paso this week, and his refusal to extend a &#8220;retention&#8221; bonus for Border Patrol Chief Raul Ortiz, prompted Tuesday&#8217;s quit-or-be-fired ultimatum from Mayorkas.
&#8220;I resigned because I believe this decision provides me with the best path for advancing my commitment to professional, innovative, and community-engaged policing,&#8221; Magnus told <a href="https://www.latimes.com/world-nation/story/2022-11-12/border-chief-resigns-after-being-told-to-leave">The Los Angeles Times</a>. &#8220;I appreciate having had this opportunity to serve and to work with many dedicated colleagues.&#8221;
Mayorkas reportedly thanked Magnus for his service in an email to the border patrol workforce, adding the agency would immediately report to deputy commissioner Troy Miller.
The White House confirmed Biden accepted the resignation letter from the leader of the nation&#8217;s largest enforcement agency, which employs more than 60,000 employees.
&#8220;President Biden appreciates Commissioner Magnus&#8217; nearly forty years of service and the contributions he made to police reform during his tenure as police chief in three U.S. cities,&#8221; said press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre in a statement to <a href="https://www.npr.org/2022/11/12/1136321045/customs-and-border-protection-chris-magnus-resigns-migrants#:~:text=Top%20U.S.%20border%20official%20Chris,a%20year%20on%20the%20job&amp;text=Chris%20Magnus%20during%20a%20Senate%20confirmation%20hearing%20in%20October%202021.,-Pool%2FGetty%20Images&amp;text=The%20head%20of%20U.S.%20Customs%20and%20Border%20Protection%20stepped%20down,apprehensions%20at%20the%20southern%20border.">NPR</a>. &#8220;The President thanks Mr. Magnus for his service at CBP and wishes him well.&#8221;
Magnus, confirmed last year as the first openly gay border commissioner, began facing mounting pressure from Biden administration officials after more than a dozen House Republican lawmakers called for his resignation.
According to a Politico <a href="https://www.politico.com/news/2022/10/17/customs-border-protection-chris-magnus-00061963">report</a>, lawmakers accused Magnus of skipping White House events, falling asleep in meetings, preoccupying himself with the agency&#8217;s culture, and not doing enough to stem the flow of illegal immigrants under the Biden administration&#8217;s southern border crisis.
<a href="https://www.prnewswire.com/news-releases/fair-analysis-4-9-million-illegal-aliens-have-crossed-our-borders-since-president-biden-took-office-301606980.html">The Federation for American Immigration Reform</a> estimated five million people had crossed the border since the Biden administration took office and reversed many of former President Donald Trump&#8217;s border security measures, such as Title 42, which empowered border patrol agents to prohibit migrants from entering the country if the removal would prevent contagious diseases from spreading.
Magnus called the pandemic-era policy &#8220;comes at a heavy cost to many asylum seekers&#8221; fleeing to the United States from failing communist regimes.
In the Politico report, Magnus allegedly called on an emergency meeting last year with Mayorkas and other senior DHS officials following a list of grievances blaming Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and other agencies for the border crisis.
One of the five anonymous administration officials familiar with the meeting told Politico that Magnus wasn&#8217;t &#8220;in the game.&#8221;
&#8220;Every time there&#8217;s a meeting, and he&#8217;s in it,&#8221; the official said. &#8220;We&#8217;ll get to a conclusion, and Magnus will have some sidebar issue that he wants to raise, and we&#8217;re all like, &#8216;What the f*** is that about?'&#8221;
Magnus, however, denied the accusations to <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/national-security/2022/11/12/cbp-magnus-resigns/">The Washington Post</a>, adding he relocated to Washington, D.C. &#8220;because I care about this agency, its mission, and the goals of this Administration&#8221; rather than accepting the position as a resume builder.
Former Border Patrol chief Ron Vitiello, who led ICE under Trump, told The Los Angeles Times that the Biden administration has mishandled immigration policy, adding the publicity surrounding Magnus&#8217; resignation request has been counterproductive and that it&#8217;s &#8220;a distraction that takes away from the hard work they are doing and the crisis they are in.&#8221;
Magnus told The Los Angeles Times that officials did not initially invite him to border policy meetings but would later be involved in most key discussions.
John Sandweg, a former top Obama administration-era Homeland Security Department official, told The Los Angeles Times that Mayorkas does not want to be faced with other problems while the border has &#8220;raging issues&#8221; rather cultural reforms.
Magnus, whose career in law enforcement included stints in Michigan, North Dakota, and California, was police chief in Tucson, Arizona, when Biden officials tapped him to be commissioner.

The U.S. Border Protection commissioner says he refused an order to resign from his beleaguered boss, <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/dereliction-of-duty-senators-cruz-graham-warn-mayorkas-of-impeachment-over-border-crisis/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas</a>, amid an unprecedented wave of illegal immigrants pouring across the Mexican border.
Customs and Border Protection Commissioner Chris Magnus, 62, had been accused of skipping White House events and falling asleep in meetings, according to a <a href="https://www.politico.com/news/2022/10/17/customs-border-protection-chris-magnus-00061963" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Politico</a> report last month. But he told the <a href="https://www.latimes.com/politics/story/2022-11-11/border-protection-commissioner-chris-magnus-say-he-has-been-asked-to-resign-but-refuses" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Los Angeles Times</a> it was his defiance of an order not to meet with border patrol chiefs in El Paso this week and his refusal to extend a “retention” bonus for Border Patrol Chief Raul Ortiz that prompted Tuesday&#8217;s quit-or-be-fired ultimatum from Mayorkas.
“After me making extensive attempts to reach [Mayorkas] and discuss the matter, I went to the (border patrol chiefs) meeting so I could engage with the chiefs on various issues and concerns,&#8221; Magnus said. &#8220;I also met with Chief Ortiz to see how we might best work together moving forward.”

Magnus, whose career in law enforcement included stints in Michigan, North Dakota, and California, was police chief in Tucson, Arizona, when he was tapped a year ago to be commissioner of the CBP, a 60,000-person agency that oversees border security, trade and travel.
The Politico article painted Magnus as preoccupied with the agency&#8217;s culture and not doing enough to stem the flow of illegal immigrants. An estimated five million people have crossed the border since the Biden administration took office and reversed many of former President Trump&#8217;s border security measures, <a href="https://www.prnewswire.com/news-releases/fair-analysis-4-9-million-illegal-aliens-have-crossed-our-borders-since-president-biden-took-office-301606980.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">according to the Federation for American Immigration Reform</a>.

Magnus said Deputy Secretary of Homeland Security John Tien on Thursday reiterated Mayorkas’ demand, saying he would be fired within days if he did not quit. Magnus said he refused to leave the post of his own volition.
“I expressed to him that I felt there was no justification for me to resign when I still cared deeply about the work I was doing and felt that that work was focused on the things I was hired to do in the first place,” Magnus told the Times.
“I want to make this clear: I have no plans to resign as CBP Commissioner,” Magnus declared in a written statement, according to <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/national-security/2022/11/11/cbp-homeland-magnus-mayorkas/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">The Washington Post</a>. “I didn’t take this job as a resume builder. I came to Washington, DC — moved my family here — because I care about this agency, its mission, and the goals of this Administration.”
The Biden administration has declined to take responsibility for the border fiasco, blaming governments in Latin America for the influx, The Washington Post <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/national-security/2022/09/19/us-border-patrol-arrests/?utm_source=twitter&amp;utm_campaign=wp_main&amp;utm_medium=social" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reported</a>.
“Failing communist regimes in Venezuela, Nicaragua, and Cuba are driving a new wave of migration across the Western Hemisphere, including the recent increase in encounters at the southwest U.S. border,” Magnus offered as an excuse. “Those fleeing repressive regimes pose significant challenges for processing and removal.”
Compared to the eight years of the Obama presidency, the Biden administration comes off poorly regarding immigration. In the first 20 months after Biden was inaugurated, Border Patrol made 3,484,327 apprehensions of illegal immigrants, while 3,384,816 apprehensions were made in the eight fiscal years of  Obama’s term, as The Washington Examiner <a href="https://www.washingtonexaminer.com/restoring-america/fairness-justice/broken-border-illegal-immigration-arrests-under-biden-exceed-obamas-eight-years" target="_blank" rel="noopener">noted</a>.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection Field Operations agents confiscated pumpkins filled with over $400,000 of liquid <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/methamphetamine" target="_blank" rel="noopener">methamphetamine</a> stashed inside more than 100 condoms Tuesday at the Eagle Pass Port of Entry in Texas.
said the pumpkins were among Halloween decorations that were not what they seemed upon discovering the narcotics.
“Our frontline CBP officers have seen just about everything and this Tuesday was no exception as they encountered liquid methamphetamine hidden within pumpkins,” Acting Port Director Elizabeth Garduno <a href="https://www.cbp.gov/newsroom/local-media-release/cbp-officers-seize-402k-liquid-methamphetamine-eagle-pass-port-entry" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a>. “They utilized their training, experience, interviewing skills and uncovered a rather novel narcotics smuggling method in the process.”
Border officers encountered a 2012 Ford Escape arriving from Mexico at the Camino Real International Bridge when authorities referred the driver and passenger for a secondary inspection.
The inspection led to officers finding nearly 44 pounds of alleged liquid methamphetamine — estimated at $402,196 — concealed within 136 condoms inside four pumpkins within the vehicle.
Following the narcotics seizure, authorities turned the driver and passenger over to the custody of Maverick County Sheriff’s Office deputies for further investigation.
ABC News <a href="https://abcnews.go.com/Politics/400k-meth-found-pumpkins-border-crossing-inspection-agents/story?id=91463448">reports</a> that in the fiscal year 2022, border patrol authorities seized 161,000 pounds of methamphetamine. In the previous fiscal year, the agency seized 192,000 pounds of meth.
Transporting narcotics inside Halloween decorations wasn’t the only creative way smugglers have attempted to bring the drugs over the border.
On Wednesday, Arizona border agents said in a <a href="https://twitter.com/CBPPortDirNOG/status/1580604612024754178" target="_blank" rel="noopener">tweet</a> that they found 2,100 fentanyl pills hidden inside tamales in an ice chest at the Nogales Port Of Entry.
“Each tamale contained a baggie of blue pills hidden inside,” Port Director Michael W. Humphries <a href="https://twitter.com/CBPPortDirNOG/status/1580604612024754178">said</a>. “Excellent work by officers and K9 teams maintaining a high level of vigilance.”

Relatively speaking, it is pretty rare that <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/joe-biden" target="_blank" rel="noopener">President Joe Biden</a> speaks to the press, but when he does, it is apparent that he has <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/biden-somehow-presents-one-of-the-worst-defenses-of-abortion-ever" target="_blank" rel="noopener">no idea</a> what he is talking about.
On Tuesday, a reporter asked Biden, &#8220;Why is the border more overwhelmed under your watch?&#8221;
It is a straightforward question with a straightforward answer. Biden <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/bidens-press-secretary-on-illegal-immigration-its-not-like-somebody-walks-over-actually-millions-do" target="_blank" rel="noopener">repealed</a> practically all aspects of border security implemented by former President Donald Trump, Democrats have constantly <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/knowles-why-democrats-want-open-borders-daily-wire" target="_blank" rel="noopener">campaigned</a> on soft immigration policies, and Biden&#8217;s veep is pushing <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/kamala-has-lost-her-gourd-veep-claims-border-is-secure-yet-blames-trump-for-crisis" target="_blank" rel="noopener">amnesty</a> as we speak. As one Border Patrol official recently <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/kamala-has-lost-her-gourd-veep-claims-border-is-secure-yet-blames-trump-for-crisis" target="_blank" rel="noopener">testified</a> under oath, the notion that illegal immigration has no consequence in the U.S. is fueling the surge.
Of course, Biden can&#8217;t admit any of that. It would give the game away. His party wants open borders.
So the president uttered a nonsensical response. Here it is, verbatim:

We don&#8217;t expect the fact-checkers in legacy media to hold Biden&#8217;s feet to the fire on that claim, so we&#8217;ll do it for them.
It isn&#8217;t true that fewer illegal aliens from Mexico and the northern triangle countries are entering the country under Biden than ever before, and you don&#8217;t have to go back very far to prove it.
Per U.S. Customs and Border Protection data <a href="https://nypost.com/2022/09/01/bidens-open-border-is-attracting-a-new-category-of-illegal-migrants/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reported</a> by the New York Post, nearly 700,000 aliens arrived at the U.S. southern border from Mexico in the fiscal year 2022. More than 400,000 arrived at the border from Honduras, Guatemala, and El Salvador. During that same time, more than 730,000 individuals from other countries attempted to enter the country at the southern border.
Under President Trump, the highest number of illegal aliens from the Northern Triangle in a given fiscal year was just above 600,000. The fewest was under 150,000. Illegal aliens from Mexico never topped more than 350,000 in one fiscal year. If you add up the number of migrants from places other than Mexico and Central American nations who arrived at the border during the entirety of the Trump administration, the total figure is nowhere close to what it&#8217;s like under Biden.
Percentage-wise, there are now fewer illegal aliens from Mexico and Central America, but that is only because the border crossings have increased on the whole.
Under Biden, Border Patrol has recorded nearly five million encounters at the southern border. That includes the 850,000 known &#8220;gotaways&#8221; who entered the country untouched by authorities.
Perhaps if the federal government had illegal immigration under control, America could afford to process and handle asylum seekers from communist places like Venezuela, Cuba, and Nicaragua. Based on the sheer mass of illegal immigration, clearly, the U.S. cannot secure its borders.
Biden is correct that we have a &#8220;totally different circumstance,&#8221; but that&#8217;s only because of Biden&#8217;s own policies that caused, and continue to fuel, the crisis in the first place.

Governor Greg Abbott (R-TX) said Wednesday his administration bussed the first group of migrants north to Chicago in response to the border crisis that has overwhelmed Texan communities.
Abbott said he would add the Windy City to the list of drop-off locations, which have included Washington, D.C., and New York City. He argued that it would provide &#8220;much-needed relief&#8221; to the state&#8217;s border towns overrun by a massive influx of people pouring over the southern border.
“President Biden&#8217;s inaction at our southern border continues putting the lives of Texans — and Americans — at risk and is overwhelming our communities,” Abbott said in a <a class="editor-rtfLink" href="https://gov.texas.gov/news/post/governor-abbott-announces-first-bus-of-migrants-arrives-in-chicago" target="_blank" rel="noopener">press release.</a> 
Abbott said he looks forward to watching Chicago&#8217;s sanctuary city services serve the migrants and the response from the city&#8217;s Mayor Lori Lightfoot, who “loves to tout the responsibility of her city to welcome all regardless of legal status.”
“Chicago is a welcoming city and as such has collaborated across various departments and agencies to ensure we greeted them with dignity and respect,” a spokesperson for the mayor&#8217;s office said in a statement. “As a city, we are doing everything we can to ensure these immigrants and their families can receive shelter, food, and most importantly, protection.” 
The statement added that Chicago welcomes “hundreds of migrants every year”  and provides much-needed assistance. 
“Unfortunately, Texas Governor Greg Abbott is without any shame or humanity,” it continued. &#8220;But ever since he put these racist practices of expulsion in place, we have been working with our community partners to ready the city to receive these individuals.”
CNN <a href="https://www.cnn.com/2022/08/30/politics/texas-migrant-busing-cost-abbott-washington-dc-new-york">reported</a> that a state government spreadsheet it obtained through a Freedom of Information Act request showed that Texas has spent more than $12 million on Wynne Transportation charter services that have bussed migrants to Washington and New York City since April.
Abbott said in a news conference in April that the program would likely make taxpayers front part of the bill for such services. 
“Because Joe Biden is not securing the border, the state of Texas is having to step up and spend Texas taxpayers&#8217; money doing the federal government&#8217;s job,” the governor said at the time, according to CNN.
Texas officials had bussed more than 6,500 migrants to Washington, D.C., and New York City as of early August. Arizona has also bused about 1,000 migrants to other states.
Governor Abbott <a class="editor-rtfLink" href="https://gov.texas.gov/uploads/files/press/O-KiddW.Nim202204062216_.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">claimed</a> in April that if Biden were to end Title 42 expulsions, the impact could soon result in as many as 18,000 migrant apprehensions per day. 
The United States Customs and Border Protection <a href="https://www.cbp.gov/newsroom/stats/nationwide-encounters">reported</a> earlier this month that authorities had more than 2,200,000 encounters with illegal immigrants in the fiscal year 2022.
Federation for American Immigration Reform (FAIR) recently <a href="https://www.fairus.org/press-releases/border-security/fair-analysis-49-million-illegal-aliens-have-crossed-our-borders">claimed</a> that nearly 4.9 million illegal aliens have crossed U.S. borders under Biden&#8217;s watch, “including some 900,000 &#8216;gotaways&#8217; who eluded apprehension and have since disappeared into American communities.” 
To put it in context, Dan Stein, the president of FAIR, compared it to the entire population of Ireland immigrating to America.
“Roughly the equivalent of the entire population of Ireland has illegally entered the United States in the 18 months President Biden has been in office, with many being released into American communities,” Stein said in a press release.

Authorities at the southern border seized approximately 1.6 million fentanyl pills and other lethal drugs concealed inside metal boxes hidden underneath the floor and various trap doors of an 18-wheeler tractor-trailer Saturday at the Nogales Port of Entry in Arizona.

Saturday&#8217;s seizure comes only days after Nogales agents <a href="https://www.12news.com/article/news/local/arizona/candy-colored-fentanyl-pills-seized-at-arizona-ports-of-entry/75-84d64c9f-445d-48e9-ae1c-b485409e3811">blocked</a> about 265,000 rainbow-colored fentanyl pills resembling candy and sidewalk chalk.
The synthetic opioid, typically used to treat patients with chronic pain or following surgeries, has 100 times the potency of morphine, U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) officials <a href="https://www.dea.gov/resources/facts-about-fentanyl">said</a>. But with the amount of illegally produced fentanyl manufactured in clandestine labs, smugglers at the southern border have fueled a crisis that authorities have called &#8220;an epidemic hidden by the pandemic.&#8221;
&#8220;There&#8217;s no question in my mind that the vast majority of chemicals are coming from China and going into Mexico and being mass produced into fentanyl and methamphetamine and increasingly into the counterfeit pills that we see on our streets,&#8221; Anne Milgram, an administrator with the DEA <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2awPPVKmpRQ">said</a> during a press conference last year.
In 2021, DEA officials busted over 9.5 million counterfeit pills, with 40% containing a lethal dose in Arizona, <a href="https://www.theepochtimes.com/fentanyl-entering-us-through-southern-border-at-unprecedented-levels-rep-higgins_4539265.html">according</a> to The Epoch Times.
According to the CDC, synthetic opioids (like fentanyl) are the primary driver of overdose deaths in the United States.
Border patrol agents <a href="https://www.foxnews.com/politics/fentanyl-seizures-southern-border-jumped-200-percent-july">reported</a> that fentanyl seizures increased by over 200% last month. U.S. lawmakers are urging local, state, and federal officials to confront the crisis.
The Epoch Times spoke to Rep. Clay Higgins (R-LA) in June, who said &#8220;without abusing law enforcement jurisdictional authority, without abusing sovereignty, [and] without abusing rights,&#8221; the country has to work together to stop the influx of fentanyl crossing the border.
&#8220;It all has to be done while operating within the parameters of the law and the Constitution,&#8221; Higgins said. &#8220;We have lost operational control of the southern border months ago, and fentanyl is entering the country at unprecedented levels—and there&#8217;s no end in sight.&#8221;
Higgins, who showed support for <a href="https://www.congress.gov/bill/117th-congress/house-bill/6439/all-info">legislation</a> that would make fentanyl trafficking punishable by life in prison, blames the crisis on weak border policies where some migrants are &#8220;likely plugged into a criminal network,&#8221; allowing millions of fentanyl-laced counterfeit pills to spread into &#8220;ever nook and cranny of the country.&#8221;
The bill was referred to the Subcommittee on Health last at the beginning of the year.

Rainbow-colored <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/fentanyl" target="_blank" rel="noopener">fentanyl</a> pills resembling candy and sidewalk chalk pouring over the <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/southern-border" target="_blank" rel="noopener">southern border</a> are plaguing cities nationwide.
Over 15,000 rainbow-colored fentanyl pills that look like a small piece of candy were seized Wednesday after authorities found the deadly drugs strapped around a person&#8217;s leg at the Nogales Port of Entry for the U.S.-Mexico border in Arizona.

Authorities believe the multi-colored pills may be the start of a trend with Transnational Criminal Organizations targeting children.
Humphries <a class="editor-rtfLink" href="https://twitter.com/CBPPortDirNOG/status/1560004375841452033?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1560004375841452033%7Ctwgr%5Ed9e3d00acf1bc7537e14ea1e9727826e95352ddf%7Ctwcon%5Es1_&amp;ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.thedenverchannel.com%2Fnews%2Fnational%2Fauthorities-issue-warning-about-rainbow-fentanyl" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a> that border patrol agents at the same port of entry found more than 250,000 fentanyl candy-colored pills the day before inside a vehicle, along with 11 pounds of heroin, and 10 pounds of methamphetamine.
Nogales border patrol agents seized more than 1.1 million fentanyl pills from July 31 through August 7.
&#8220;Officers made sure these dangerous narcotics won&#8217;t make it to U.S. cities,&#8221; Humphries said.
However, Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) officials said they had seized similar-looking pills in the D.C. region over the last 18 months.
&#8220;My biggest concern, and I think the biggest concern of DEA nationwide, is that the pills seem to be marketed specifically to a younger age group,&#8221; Jennifer Lofland, field intelligence manager for the Washington division, <a href="https://www.fox5dc.com/news/dea-reports-finding-rainbow-fentanyl-pills-in-dc-region">told</a> Fox 5 D.C.
Lofland urged parents to warn their children to never take a pill unless prescribed by a doctor, especially considering there is no way to know how potent the drug might be that&#8217;s laced with fentanyl.
&#8220;Some of the multi-colored pills that we&#8217;ve been testing in our labs recently, particularly a recent batch that appeared to be children&#8217;s chewable vitamins, were tested by our lab as containing both fentanyl and methamphetamine,&#8221; Lofland said.
&#8220;And so that is just an added layer of danger,&#8221; she said, adding that the agency has found an increasing number of animal tranquilizers added to the pills.
Newsweek <a class="editor-rtfLink" href="https://www.newsweek.com/rainbow-fentanyl-may-target-kids-drug-spreads-west-coast-officials-1734597" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reports</a> that the Multnomah County Sheriff&#8217;s Office in Oregon recently found several grams of rainbow fentanyl that resembles sidewalk chalk at a residence, and has warned that the new form is considered more potent than pressed pills.
&#8220;Deputies are particularly concerned about rainbow fentanyl getting into the hands of young adults or children, who mistake the drug for something else, such as candy or a toy, or those who may be willing to try the drug due to its playful coloring,&#8221; the sheriff&#8217;s office said.
Kelly Sloop, a pharmacist and executive director of the Need 4 Narcan organization, told Newsweek that the new pill style is used because drug dealers and cartels want to reinvent the wheel to find another means of appealing to kids and young adults.
&#8220;And if you actually look at it, it does have the consistency of sidewalk chalk but it kind of looks like a taffy, saltwater taffy, and it is very appealing because it does look like candy,&#8221; Sloop said.
&#8220;If we don&#8217;t continue to stay up to date and continue to raise drug awareness, children and young adults will find this appealing and can get their hands on this and overdose, because they will not know how potent this fentanyl really is, because it does not take much at all to overdose on fentanyl.&#8221;

U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) announced on Thursday officers intercepted over $1.2 million worth of fentanyl hidden in various food items at the Otay Mesa port of entry earlier this month.
Authorities said two men, 43 and 50, were driving a 2005 GMC Yukon attempting to enter the U.S. using a passport and a California identification card on July 3. When officers inspected the vehicle, they found over 100 pounds of the deadly synthetic opioid packed in 46 bags of flour, ground coffee cans, creamer, and powdered milk cans.
&#8220;We are seeing a rise in fentanyl smuggling attempts,&#8221; Anne Maricich, CBP Deputy Director of Field Operations in San Diego, <a href="https://www.cbp.gov/newsroom/local-media-release/otay-mesa-cbp-officers-discover-over-100-pounds-fentanyl-concealed">said</a>.
Authorities said the 42.46 pounds of fentanyl came in powder form while 59.08 pounds were encapsulated in pills.
CBP officers seized the narcotics and vehicle and turned the driver and passenger over to the custody of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement and Homeland Security for further investigation.
The United States Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) describes fentanyl as a synthetic opioid 50-100 times stronger than morphine, initially developed for pain management for cancer patients.
CBS <a href="https://www.cbsnews.com/news/fentanyl-pills-seized-in-dea-bust-near-los-angeles/">reported</a> DEA authorities announced on Thursday approximately one million pills laced with fentanyl with a street value of about $20 million were confiscated in Los Angeles earlier this month — marking the biggest fentanyl bust in California history.
&#8220;This massive seizure disrupted the flow of dangerous amounts of fentanyl into our streets and probably saved many lives,&#8221; DEA Special Agent in Charge Bill Bodner said in a statement. &#8220;The deceptive marketing coupled with the ease of accessibility makes these small and seemingly innocuous pills a significant threat to the health and safety of all our communities.&#8221;
&#8220;A staggering number of teens and young adults are unaware that they are ingesting fentanyl in these fake pills and are being poisoned,&#8221; Bodner added.
A 2020 <a href="https://www.dea.gov/sites/default/files/2020-03/DEA_GOV_DIR-008-20%20Fentanyl%20Flow%20in%20the%20United%20States_0.pdf">report</a> from the DEA states fentanyl primarily flows from China and Mexico into the United States. However, India has put itself on the map for sourcing the drug in chemical and powdered forms.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention <a href="https://www.cdc.gov/nchs/pressroom/nchs_press_releases/2022/202205.htm">reports</a> synthetic opioids accounted for approximately 71,000 out of 107,000 drug overdose deaths in the U.S. last year.

Congressman Chip Roy (R-TX) laid into Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas during a Thursday hearing, repeatedly disputing his claim that the United States had &#8220;operational control&#8221; of the southern border.
Roy pressed Mayorkas on the number of illegal immigrants who were in the United States, arguing that based on the legal definition and the number of illegal immigrants who remained in the country unchecked, it was dishonest to suggest that the Biden administration had any control over the border.

&#8220;Mr Secretary, there have been over one million individuals put into proceedings or released into the United States on your watch,&#8221; Roy began, noting that he had asked border patrol personnel whether an increase to their budget might have an impact on that number.
He went on to say that everyone he spoke to said the number of people released into the country were the direct result of the administration&#8217;s policy, not a lack of adequate funding.
Roy then turned the question to Mayorkas, asking whether he believed the number of illegal immigrants released into the country would go up or down with a budget increase.
&#8220;Would the number of people being released into the United States under current law, would it go down no matter how much you increased your budget?&#8221; he asked. &#8220;It would not, as they said. Do you agree, yes or no?&#8221;
&#8220;Congressman, if I understand your question correctly, when individuals are in the United States and they make a claim for asylum —&#8221; Mayorkas replied.
&#8220;The number would not go down, is the answer, right? Yes or no? That’s what they said, and I think you&#8217;ve just answered, it would not go down,&#8221; Roy repeated. &#8220;The only plan that you offer, the plan you just offered, is to process aliens faster and encourage more to come.&#8221;
&#8220;We know that to be true. I know it&#8217;s true, you know it&#8217;s true, cartels know it&#8217;s true, and people around the world know it&#8217;s true, and that&#8217;s why people are coming,&#8221; Roy continued.
&#8220;That&#8217;s false,&#8221; Mayorkas objected, but Roy pushed back, saying that it wasn&#8217;t false and adding, &#8220;The entirety of your plan says that.&#8221;
&#8220;The Secure Fence Act of 2006 says what?&#8221; Roy asked <a href="https://georgewbush-whitehouse.archives.gov/news/releases/2006/10/20061026-1.html">then</a>. &#8220;That the Secretary of Homeland Security shall take all actions the secretary determines necessary to achieve and maintain operational control over the entire international land and maritime borders. Will you testify under oath, right now, do we have operational control, yes or no?&#8221;
&#8220;Yes, we do,&#8221; Mayorkas replied.
&#8220;We have operational control of the border?&#8221; Roy repeated.
&#8220;Yes, we do, and Congressman, we are working to —&#8221; Mayorkas tried again.
&#8220;Listen to what — operational control defined,&#8221; Roy continued. &#8220;In this section, the term &#8216;operational control&#8217; means the prevention of all unlawful entries into the United States, including entries by terrorists, other unlawful aliens, instruments of terrorism, narcotics, and other contraband. Do you stand by your testimony that we have operational control in light of this definition?&#8221;
Mayorkas attempted a pivot to blame the problem on the previous administration, arguing that the DHS Secretary in 2020 would probably have also claimed to have operational control of the border.
&#8220;The secretary would have at least had a basis for saying that we have some sort of control of the border,&#8221; Roy shot back, clearly referencing former President Donald Trump&#8217;s more stringent <a href="https://dailywire.com/news/biden-reinstating-trump-era-remain-in-mexico-immigration-policy-after-court-forces-admin-to-do-so/">immigration policies</a>.
He went on to note that, according to Mayorkas&#8217; office, over 40 individuals on the terror watch list had been released into the United States and were unaccounted for.
Roy concluded by showing a series of photos of Americans who had died as a result of fentanyl <a href="https://dailywire.com/news/more-fentanyl-seized-at-u-s-borders-than-heroin-for-first-time-in-u-s-history/">coming across the border</a> illegally, and he was still showing the photos when Congressman Jerry Nadler (D-NY) interrupted to inform him that his time had expired.
&#8220;The time of the gentleman has expired, he no longer has time to slander the secretary,&#8221; Nadler said before moving on.

U.S. Border Patrol apprehended at least 23 individuals included on the nation&#8217;s terror watchlist last year, according to Customs and Border Protection (CBP) information.
&#8220;Between Jan. 20 and Dec. 27, 2021, there were 23 encounters with individuals whose names matched on the Terrorist Screening Database (TSDB),&#8221; Fox News <a href="https://www.foxnews.com/politics/border-patrol-people-terrorist-database-southern-border-2021-cbp-data" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reported</a>.
&#8220;Four were in the Rio Grande Valley Sector, 4 in Del Rio Sector, 3 in El Paso Sector, 2 in Tucson Sector, 2 in Yuma Sector, 4 in El Centro Sector and 4 in San Diego Sector,&#8221; the report added, noting the information was obtained in response to a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request submitted in December.

“Public reporting indicates that at least several potential terrorists were apprehended by U.S. Border Patrol personnel after illegally crossing the border last year. And it is likely that the numbers of terrorists apprehended is much higher than publicly known,&#8221; the lawmakers said in a <a href="https://republicans-homeland.house.gov/katko-comer-blast-dhs-for-hiding-information-about-terrorists-apprehended-at-the-border/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">statement</a>.
&#8220;The American people deserve to know this information and the realities of the security situation we face at our broken borders, especially where terrorists attempt to gain entry to our country,” they added.
The Terrorist Screening Center <a href="https://www.fbi.gov/about/leadership-and-structure/national-security-branch/tsc" target="_blank" rel="noopener">page</a> on the FBI&#8217;s website notes that most people on the terrorism watchlist are not Americans. &#8220;For security reasons, the TSC does not confirm anyone’s status on the watchlist,&#8221; the FBI&#8217;s page states.
The report also comes as the Biden administration prepares to end the use of Title 42 in May, rolling back a Trump-era policy implemented to turn away migrants at the southern border to help stop the spread of COVID-19.
Concerns continue to grow that the policy change could lead to an additional spike in illegal crossings. Border officials are preparing for up to <a href="https://www.cbsnews.com/news/immigration-title-42-border-arrivals-spike-us-preparing/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">18,000 illegal crossings</a> per day, a number that could exceed 540,000 people per month.
The costly response would also include a large increase in personnel. An additional 2,500 law enforcement officers, 2,750 support staff and, over 1,000 medical personnel at the southern border could be required, according to the DHS report.

Deportations by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) fell in 2021 to the lowest level ever recorded, according to a Friday report by the agency.
The Biden administration has taken steps to curtail ICE operations while at the same time struggling to contain an explosion in border crossings on the U.S. southern border. ICE said in a <a href="https://www.ice.gov/news/releases/ice-releases-fy-2021-annual-report">release</a> that the new data reflect the agency’s focus “on threats to national security, public safety, and border security.”
“In Fiscal Year 2021, ICE officers and special agents effectively carried out their national security, public safety, and border security mission despite having to work through the devastating COVID-19 pandemic,” ICE Acting Director Tae Johnson said in a statement. “As the annual report’s data reflects, ICE’s officers and special agents focused on cases that delivered the greatest law enforcement impact in communities across the country while upholding our values as a nation.”
The report shows that ICE recorded 59,011 deportations in fiscal year 2021. That total is down by well over 120,000 from 185,884 in fiscal year 2020. The decrease is in part to enforcement changes made due to COVID-19, and due in part to a scaling back of ICE priorities. According to <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/national-security/2022/03/11/ice-report-deporations-arrests/">The Washington Post</a>:
<blockquote>The lower numbers were partly the result of enforcement changes triggered by the <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/coronavirus/?itid=lk_inline_manual_4">coronavirus</a> pandemic that have allowed U.S. agents to rapidly expel unlawful border crossers under the Title 42 public health code, a procedure that does not count as a formal deportation.
But another gauge of ICE enforcement activity — immigration arrests in the U.S. interior — also showed a significant drop relative to historic averages. Officers working for ICE’s Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO) made about 74,082 administrative arrests during the 2021 fiscal year, down from 104,000 during fiscal 2020 and an average of 148,000 annually from 2017 through 2019.</blockquote>
The U.S. border is reportedly <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/u-s-officials-reveal-stunning-projections-for-bidens-border-crisis-significantly-worse-than-2021">projected</a> to be flooded in another record-breaking border crossings this Spring. The Biden administration is bracing for a wave of migrants that could result in border officials making up to 9,000 arrests per day. The U.S. Customs and Border Protection struggled to handle border crossers last year, making a record-breaking 1.7 million arrests. At the height of the migration, daily arrests rose up to 6,500 a day.
Former acting CBP commissioner Mark Morgan released a <a href="https://www.heritage.org/press/heritage-experts-blast-new-biden-border-crisis-numbers-lack-transparency">statement</a> in January slamming President Joe Biden over the ongoing border crisis. Morgan said:

Democrat President Joe Biden&#8217;s administration finally released the December numbers for illegal border crossings along the U.S.-Mexico border, which showed a dramatic uptick compared to previous years.
&#8220;The number of unique individuals encountered in December 2021 was 135,040, a 5 percent increase in the number of unique individuals encountered the prior month,&#8221; U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) <a href="https://www.cbp.gov/newsroom/national-media-release/cbp-releases-december-2021-monthly-operational-update">said</a> in a statement. &#8220;In total, there were 178,840 encounters along the Southwest land border in December, a 2 percent increase compared to November.&#8221;
The 178,840 illegal border crossings for December 2021 was higher than the December totals from 2020, 2019, and 2018 combined when there was a total of 175,353 illegal border crossings.

Former acting ICE director Tom Homan said during an interview accused Biden&#8217;s border policies to contributing to deaths along the southern border. Homan&#8217;s remarks came after a Texas Department of Public Safety officer was killed during a U.S. Border Patrol incident over the weekend.
