<a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/republicans" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Republicans</a> will give <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/democratic-party" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Democrats</a> room to &#8220;cut their own throats&#8221; when scrambling to figure out how to proceed with the 2024 White House race after President <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/joe-biden" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Joe Biden</a>&#8216;s fumbling debate performance less than two weeks ago, a GOP senator said on Sunday.
Sen. <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/tommy-tuberville" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Tommy Tuberville</a> (R-AL) made the comment on <a href="https://www.foxnews.com/video/6356991836112" target="_blank" rel="noopener">&#8220;Sunday Morning Futures&#8221;</a> after Fox News host Maria Bartiromo asked him who will be the running mate if Biden drops out and Vice President <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/kamala-harris" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Kamala Harris</a> ends up at the top of the ticket in the contest against former President <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/donald-trump" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Donald Trump</a>.

&#8220;I don&#8217;t know who they&#8217;d pick,&#8221; Tuberville said in response. &#8220;We&#8217;re just going to stay out of their way and let them cut their own throats, to be honest with you. It&#8217;s a disaster.&#8221;
Moments earlier, Bartiromo noted Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) would be <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2024/07/05/us/politics/hakeem-jeffries-biden-democrats.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">having a call</a> with fellow leading House Democrats to discuss Biden and the 2024 race. She then asked Tuberville for his reaction to the crisis of confidence that Biden is facing from members of his own party.
&#8220;This has been a disgrace. It&#8217;s been a disgrace for 3.5 years,&#8221; Tuberville replied. &#8220;We have been talking to our Democratic colleagues in the Senate. They know what&#8217;s going on. Mainstream media has hid all this. Now they&#8217;re panicking and wondering what they&#8217;re going to do. They put the early debate just in case this happened. Well, it did happen.&#8221;
Biden &#8220;doesn&#8217;t know what day it is,&#8221; Tuberville said. &#8220;It&#8217;s unfortunate for Joe Biden. He&#8217;s sick. Nobody can help that. People do get old. They do get sick. But this is all about the Democrats&#8217; power, they&#8217;re continuing to remain in power.&#8221;
Tuberville added, &#8220;Kamala Harris will probably be the candidate running against Donald Trump. That will be very interesting.&#8221;
As the conversation went on, Bartiromo asked Tuberville about conversations in the Senate about Biden&#8217;s mental fitness, to which Tuberville argued Biden is no longer in charge.
Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY), House Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), and former President Barack Obama have been &#8220;running the country,&#8221; he said, along with Secretary of State Antony Blinken and National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan.
&#8220;Joe Biden hasn&#8217;t been making decisions. He might have [in the] first year had some say so about what&#8217;s going on, but he&#8217;s been out of it since after the first year in office. And you can tell by Schumer&#8217;s actions, Pelosi&#8217;s actions the first two years. They were calling the shots,&#8221; Tuberville said.
&#8220;So, hopefully, people understand that,&#8221; he added. &#8220;They have had total control, not the president, but Schumer and Pelosi and all the deep state. The deep state has total control of this. And, hopefully, we can get control of it and get the Democrats out of control and get Trump and all the Republicans running this country.&#8221;

A pair of <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/u-s-senate" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Senate</a> Republicans introduced legislation on Tuesday to remove &#8220;woke requirements&#8221; from a $52.7 billion bill <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/biden-signs-52-billion-semiconductor-bill-in-latest-push-to-fight-inflation" target="_blank" rel="noopener">signed</a> into law by President <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/joe-biden" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Joe Biden</a> in 2022 that sought to subsidize the domestic semiconductor industry, create more <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/stem-students-troll-woke-lgbt-survey-researchers-blame-rise-of-online-fascism" target="_blank" rel="noopener">STEM</a> jobs, and boost research in new technologies.
The new <a href="https://www.tuberville.senate.gov/wp-content/uploads/ROM243083.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">offering</a> from Sens. <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/tommy-tuberville" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Tommy Tuberville</a> (R-AL) and <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/mike-lee" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Mike Lee</a> (R-UT) would repeal various programs and positions from the CHIPs and Science Act that embrace tenets of <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/diversity-equity-and-inclusion-dei" target="_blank" rel="noopener">DEI</a>. It also aims to place limits on mandates imposed on entities seeking federal funds related to policies on diversity, mitigating climate change, environmental justice, community investment, and others.
Called the CHIPS Improvement Act, the GOP bill is being pitched as a means to get rid of &#8220;red tape&#8221; causing delays in plans to build up the U.S. semiconductor manufacturing industry. The United States and China are competing<a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2024/06/12/us-reportedly-weighing-more-limits-on-chinas-access-to-ai-chip-tech.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener"> over chip technology</a> needed for artificial intelligence.
&#8220;The Biden administration has put American manufacturing, and the American worker, last on the world stage,” Tuberville said in a <a href="https://www.tuberville.senate.gov/newsroom/press-releases/tuberville-introduces-bill-to-boost-american-manufacturing-remove-woke-dei-requirements-from-chips-act/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">press release</a>. “Our country simply cannot afford to allow China to continue to out-compete us in technology and innovation over the next generation.&#8221;
He added, &#8220;The CHIPS Act has potential, but it needs reforms to become effective. By removing the woke regulations that have nothing to do with job creation and are putting significant bureaucratic burdens on private industry, we can get government out of the way and allow this bill to do what it was designed to do: end American reliance on China.&#8221;

Seventeen Republicans in the Senate <a href="https://thehill.com/homenews/senate/3576405-senate-passes-chips-and-science-bill-aimed-at-better-competing-with-china/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">helped</a> Democrats pass the CHIPS and Science Act in the summer of 2022, after which it <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2022/07/28/house-vote-semiconductor-chips-bill/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">advanced through</a> the GOP-led House with bipartisan support. When Biden signed the bill into law, he said it would benefit the economy and national security. But critics of the legislation still take issue with its expansive push in favor of leftist ideals.

Do not expect any of the names floating around in regard to former President Donald Trump&#8217;s search for a running mate to make the final cut, according to a GOP senator.
Sen. Tommy Tuberville (R-AL) <a href="https://www.politico.com/news/2024/03/31/inside-donald-trumps-apprentice-style-search-for-a-running-mate-00149827" target="_blank" rel="noopener">spoke to POLITICO</a> about Trump&#8217;s search for a vice president to serve in a second term, which has drawn a great deal of speculation in the run-up to the November election after two campaigns with Mike Pence as his running mate.
“He’ll ask you about people,” Tuberville said, adding, &#8220;All I can tell you is, if you’re hearing any names, it ain’t going to be them. It’s all propaganda.&#8221;
Among those said to be in consideration include Sens. Tim Scott (R-SC), Marco Rubio (R-FL), Katie Britt (R-AL), and J.D. Vance (R-OH); South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem; and Reps. <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/trump-considering-elise-stefanik-for-vp-report" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Elise Stefanik</a> (R-NY) and Byron Donalds (R-FL).
The report also noted Arkansas Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders, who served as Trump&#8217;s White House press secretary, and North Dakota Governor Doug Burgum, who ran against Trump in the primary this cycle, are under consideration.
Last month, the New York Post <a href="https://nypost.com/2024/03/19/us-news/trump-rules-out-vivek-ramaswamy-as-vp-will-consider-him-for-other-admin-positions/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reported</a> that Trump ruled out former GOP rival Vivek Ramaswamy for VP, but would consider him for a Cabinet post. Donald Trump Jr., the former president&#8217;s eldest son, <a href="https://nypost.com/2024/03/23/us-news/donald-trump-jr-is-lobbying-trump-for-these-vp-candidates/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">told the outlet</a> he&#8217;s pushing for a &#8220;fighter&#8221; like journalist Tucker Carlson, Vance, or Ramaswamy.
Trump himself has floated possibilities, including Scott and Noem, while stressing there are <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/trump-names-two-people-when-asked-about-potential-vp-candidates" target="_blank" rel="noopener">&#8220;a lot of good people&#8221;</a> he could choose from.
Sources told POLITICO that Susan Wiles, an adviser to former President Trump, is working on devising a short list of VP contenders. One insider even suggested Trump may &#8220;draw this out &#8216;Apprentice&#8217;-syle,&#8221; a reference to his old reality TV show on NBC.
Tuberville hearkened back to his experience as a college football coach in dismissing all the buzz in the VP hunt.

&#8220;To think that having a man on a women&#8217;s team doesn&#8217;t affect our young women is to just ignore an ugly, ugly truth. The hell these girls went through affected them dramatically,&#8221; Mullins said.
Mullins went on to ask, &#8220;What can Congress do to put the responsibility on the schools to protect them?&#8221; She directed the question directly to Britt, who has a school-aged daughter and son.
Britt said the experiences of the younger Mullins underscores how adults, including parents, need to demand conversations and support young athletes. As for what lawmakers are doing, Britt said they are working &#8220;diligently&#8221; to give female competitors the best chance for success.
She noted some of the work of Tuberville pushing the Biden administration to push back on <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/new-biden-education-rules-prohibit-blanket-bans-on-males-in-girls-sports" target="_blank" rel="noopener">proposed regulations</a> to prohibit schools from enforcing blanket bans on trans-identifying males in girls sports and Sen. Cindy Hyde-Smith (R-MS) <a href="https://www.hydesmith.senate.gov/hyde-smith-reintroduces-womens-bill-rights" target="_blank" rel="noopener">taking up the fight</a> for a &#8220;<a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/republican-lawmakers-introduce-womens-bill-of-rights-to-stand-up-for-women" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Women’s Bill of Rights</a>.&#8221;
Making a hopeful prediction for Republicans in November&#8217;s election, Britt said, &#8220;When we take back the Senate next year, I have a feeling that we&#8217;ll be able to move some of this forward.&#8221;
The Senate is currently led by Democrats who have 48 seats and three independents who caucus with them. Republicans are the <a href="https://www.senate.gov/history/partydiv.htm" target="_blank" rel="noopener">minority party</a> with 49 seats. Multiple reports in recent months <a href="https://thehill.com/homenews/campaign/4479501-gop-chances-of-winning-the-senate-on-the-rise/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">have</a> <a href="https://www.cbsnews.com/news/senate-democrats-face-steep-odds-in-trying-to-hold-majority-in-november/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">indicated</a> that the chances of the GOP retaking the Senate are improving.

Tuberbille has witnessed firsthand how the legislative push to protect women&#8217;s sports has become a partisan issue that has held up movement in Congress. Last year, he <a href="https://www.foxnews.com/politics/senate-dem-blocks-bill-save-womens-sports-tuberville-quick-passage" target="_blank" rel="noopener">tried and failed</a> to win passage for the <a href="https://www.tuberville.senate.gov/newsroom/press-releases/tuberville-moves-for-senate-to-pass-bill-to-save-womens-sports/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Protection of Women and Girls in Sports Act</a>, which seeks to amend Title IX and ban recipients of federal funds from being involved with athletic programs that allow males to participate in women&#8217;s sporting events. Even if Republicans win a majority, Tuberville cautioned that progress is no guarantee.
&#8220;We have an election this year and hopefully we take the Senate,&#8221; Tuberville said. &#8220;In the Senate, you still have to get 60 votes (to bypass a filibuster). We won&#8217;t have 60, and so we&#8217;re going to have to plead to our cohorts on the Left to make a common sense decision to save women&#8217;s sports.&#8221;
Lummis chimed in to say that she believes Democrats will join with Republicans on the issue &#8220;because they know it&#8217;s wrong.&#8221; Hyde-Smith insisted that lawmakers will use their &#8220;microphone&#8221; and &#8220;platform.&#8221; She added, &#8220;Elections matter. We have got to empower people to get out, vote, and change this.&#8221;

Alabama Republican Sen. <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/tommy-tuberville" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Tommy Tuberville</a> reportedly loosened his grip on holding Senate approval for military promotions en masse after months of blocking them until the Pentagon makes internal changes to its abortion policy.
&#8220;I&#8217;m not going to hold the promotions of these people any longer,&#8221; Tuberville <a href="https://www.wsj.com/politics/policy/tommy-tuberville-backs-down-in-fight-over-military-promotions-494cdbbc" target="_blank" rel="noopener">told</a> reporters on Tuesday. &#8220;We fought hard. We did the right thing for the unborn and for our military, fighting back against executive overreach and an abortion policy.&#8221;
Tuberville <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/tuberville-blasts-biden-would-rather-burn-down-the-senate-than-negotiate-on-military-abortion-policy" target="_blank" rel="noopener">held up approval</a> of mass military promotions since February, a blockade used to persuade changes to a Department of Defense (DoD) policy that reimburses military members who travel out of state for abortions. The Pentagon invoked the policy after the Supreme Court repealed Roe v. Wade, leaving the issue of abortion legality and limits up to state governments.
Tuberville&#8217;s hold did not block military promotions entirely. The Senate considered approving promotions one at a time while Democrats brought some cases up for a vote for certain top-level positions. However, Tuberville&#8217;s hold prevented voting on multiple cases simultaneously as a time-saving move.
&#8220;I think we saw some success,&#8221; Tuberville reportedly said. &#8220;We didn&#8217;t get as much out of it as we wanted. But again, when they change the rules on you, I had no opportunity to, other than possibly down the road, a lawsuit, but that has nothing to do with the holds. That needs to be done in a separate way.&#8221;
Tuberville suggested his efforts didn&#8217;t get the result intended, noting that the policy is still &#8220;bad.&#8221;
&#8220;We tried to stand up for the taxpayers of this country,&#8221; he <a href="https://www.politico.com/live-updates/2023/12/05/congress/tuberville-drops-military-holds-00130149" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a>.
Tuberville reportedly plans to hold his four-star nominees, but intends to release the rest effective immediately, allowing the Senate to confirm most of the promotions as soon as Tuesday evening and likely before the beginning of 2024.

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D&#8211;NY) told reporters the chamber of Congress will move &#8220;as soon as possible&#8221; to confirm the promotions.
The Wall Street Journal reported that as of November 27, the hold on promotions impacted at least 451 generals and admirals who waited in limbo for nearly ten months.
A U.S. Defense official reportedly said 11 of those on hold are four-star admirals or generals.
Air Force Brig. Gen. Pat Ryder, a Pentagon spokesman, told reporters the news of Tuberville&#8217;s lift encouraged the Defense Department.
&#8220;We&#8217;ll continue to stay engaged with Sen. Tuberville in the Senate directly to urge that all the holds on all our general flag officer nominations be lifted, to include those nominated for four-star,&#8221; he <a href="https://abcnews.go.com/Politics/tuberville-releasing-hold-military-nominees-ending-monthslong-blockade/story?id=105394424" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a>.
Following the publication of this article, Senate lawmakers approved more than 400 promotions for senior military officers.
Schumer <a href="https://www.politico.com/live-updates/2023/12/05/congress/tuberville-drops-military-holds-00130149" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reportedly</a> moved to quickly confirm the list of generals and admirals, which were approved with unanimous consent.
&#8220;Hundreds — hundreds — of military families across the country can breathe a sigh of relief,” Schumer said, calling  Tuberville&#8217;s blockade a &#8220;pointless and gravely damaging ordeal&#8221; that should never have happened.
“Let this incident be a warning: No one &#8212; no one &#8212; should attempt this in the Senate again,” Schumer said.

Sen. <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/tommy-tuberville" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Tommy Tuberville</a> said President <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/joe-biden" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Joe Biden</a> would rather “burn the Senate down” before negotiating to lift Tuberville’s hold on Senate approval for military promotions en masse.
The Alabama Republican has held up approval of mass military promotions since February of a Department of Defense (DoD) policy that reimburses military members who travel out of state for abortions. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin put the policy in place after the Supreme Court repealed Roe v. Wade, leaving the issue of abortion legality and limits up to state governments.
Tuberville’s hold does not block military promotions entirely. The Senate may still consider promotions one at a time, and Democrats have brought some cases up for a vote for certain top-level positions. Tuberville’s hold prevents voting on multiple cases at once as a time-saving move, however.
“It’s typical of this place. This administration would rather burn the Senate down and that’s what would happen. … If you change the rules of the Senate then it lasts forever,” Tuberville said on <a href="https://www.cnn.com/2023/10/29/politics/tommy-tuberville-military-nominations-middle-east/index.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">CNN</a> on Sunday. “So they would rather burn down the Senate than negotiate.”
Tuberville has refused to budge on his hold amid the war in Ukraine and after a conflict erupted between Israel and Hamas after the Palestinian terror group killed over 1,400 Israelis, most of them civilians, in an October 7 terror attack.
The Alabama senator has demanded Austin reverse the DoD policy on abortion travel saying it politicizes the military and effectively funds abortions. He has denied Democrat charges that the hold is effecting military readiness.
“If I thought this was happening, I wouldn’t be doing this. And I’ve told you that all along. And the people that I trust tell me that it’s not,” he said.
Democrats have floated changing Senate rules to get around Tuberville’s blockade. For the rule-change to work, nine Republicans would have to vote with every Democrat to approve it.
“If they go around and, without negotiating, change the rules of the Senate it just goes to show you they want it their way or the highway,” Tuberville told CNN.
Tuberville’s stand on the DoD policy has split some in the GOP. Former U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley, who is running for the GOP nomination for president, has <a href="https://www.al.com/news/2023/09/thats-a-mistake-nikki-haley-critical-of-tuberville-military-holds.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">called</a> Tuberville’s hold on military promotions a “mistake.”
Republican Sen. Mike Lee has <a href="https://twitter.com/BasedMikeLee/status/1699917964215210242" target="_blank" rel="noopener">praised</a> Tuberville’s blockade, however.
“We need more like  @SenTuberville,” Lee posted in September. “And we need more senators defending him — especially those claiming to care about life and the rule of law. Republican senators shouldn’t be siding with Biden here; nor should they silently acquiesce to his false and inflammatory talking points.”

Hayden, a retired four-star general who in addition to serving as head of the CIA also worked as chief of the NSA during his career, stirred controversy when he responded to a post on X on Monday that asked, &#8220;Should Tommy Tuberville be removed from his committee? The comment prompted a torrent of criticism, including from other GOP lawmakers who regarded what Hayden said as a <a href="https://twitter.com/SenMikeLee/status/1711743834067968453">threat</a> and even the <a href="https://twitter.com/RepDanBishop/status/1711759580697374767">suggestion of</a> an assassination attempt.
“This morning my office was made aware of a statement made by General Michael Hayden calling for a politically motivated assassination,&#8221; Tuberville said in a statement. &#8220;This statement is disgusting and it is repugnant to everything we believe in as Americans. Given General Hayden’s long career in Washington, he must have known that, by making such a statement, he was committing a serious crime.&#8221;
Tuberville added, &#8220;His own efforts today to reinterpret what he said are only a tacit admission of guilt. If we still have a nonpolitical justice system in this country, then General Hayden will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. My office has reported this incident to the Capitol Police and I expect that they will once again do an excellent job protecting members of Congress and bringing criminals to justice.&#8221;

Former Pentagon spokesman John Kirby appeared to suggest on Tuesday that when it came to matters affecting national security, access to abortions was just as important as making sure the right officers were confirmed in the right jobs.
Kirby, who currently serves as Coordinator for Strategic Communications at the National Security Council, made the comments during a press briefing — when asked why, if the Pentagon&#8217;s abortion policy was preventing those confirmations from taking place, they didn&#8217;t simply reverse the policy in the name of national security.

Kirby went on to complain that not allowing military members and their families access to <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/house-moves-to-block-funding-for-abortion-travel-as-lawmakers-prepare-to-vote-on-military-spending" target="_blank" rel="noopener">funds for travel</a> — assuming abortions are not legal where they live or are stationed — would be &#8220;an egregious violation of the covenant&#8221; made between the U.S. military and those who signed up to serve in its ranks.
&#8220;Remember this, they&#8217;re volunteers,&#8221; Kirby continued. &#8220;There&#8217;s not conscription, there&#8217;s no draft. People volunteer for this. And when they volunteer for that duty, they have every right to expect that they&#8217;re going to get the health care they need.&#8221;
&#8220;A healthy force is a ready force,&#8221; he concluded, adding, &#8220;So don&#8217;t talk to me about national security being impaired. The one impairing national security is Senator Tuberville — not only because he&#8217;s depriving the military of necessary leadership in the field and at sea, but he&#8217;s also willing to deprive female members of the military, 20% of the force, from necessary health care. That, both, is a violation of national security.&#8221;
<a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/joint-chiefs-nominee-knocks-tubervilles-hold-on-military-promotions" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Tuberville&#8217;s block</a> only applies to mass confirmations that can be undertaken by the Senate if there is unanimous consent. His hold forces the Senate to either refuse to take up the promotions entirely or to take them up on an individual basis — which would take longer, but achieve the same result.

The <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/u-s-senate" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Senate</a> voted on Wednesday night to approve Air Force General Charles &#8220;CQ&#8221; Brown, President <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/joe-biden" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Joe Biden</a>’s pick to be the next chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.
Brown, who has previously been <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/watchdog-group-files-complaint-against-biden-joint-chiefs-nominee-over-race-based-hiring" target="_blank" rel="noopener">criticized for his comments</a> on mandating diversity throughout the military, was approved by the Senate by a vote of 83-11. The vote followed a months-long standoff between Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) and Sen. Tommy Tuberville (R-AL). 
Tuberville had blocked mass approval votes on <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/department-of-defense" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Department of Defense</a> nominees over the Pentagon’s policy of paying for travel for women in the military to get abortions. Schumer moved to vote on Brown’s nomination individually, a move which was only opposed by eight Republicans. 
“In the end, the Senate will overwhelmingly vote to overcome Senator Tuberville’s blockade of these three nominees, … and the abortion policy that Senator Tuberville abhors will remain in place,” Schumer <a href="https://www.politico.com/news/2023/09/20/brown-confirm-joint-chiefs-chair-00117247" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a>. “But the harm he is doing to the military and their families remains and, unfortunately, continues for hundreds of others.”
On Thursday, the Senate is expected to vote on Biden’s nominees to lead both the Army and the Marines. 
The Republicans who voted <a href="https://www.senate.gov/legislative/LIS/roll_call_votes/vote1181/vote_118_1_00234.htm" target="_blank" rel="noopener">agains</a>t moving Brown’s nomination forward for a final vote were: Sen. Mike Braun (Indiana), Sen. Ted Cruz (Texas), Sen. Josh Hawley (Missouri), Sen. Mike Lee (R-UT), Sen. Roger Marshall (Kansas), Sen. Eric Schmitt (Missouri), Sen. Tuberville (Alabama), and Sen. J.D. Vance (Ohio). 
Citizens for Renewing America, a conservative policy group, said it was grateful to the Republicans who voted against moving Brown’s nomination forward. 
“CQ Brown not only has serious command and performance failures, he’s actively pushing race and sex quotas in the military, which is a blatant violation of the 14th Amendment. We hope more members join these patriots in the final vote,” group president and former Trump official Russ Vought <a href="https://twitter.com/amrenewcitizen/status/1704609260754157683" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a>. 
After the nomination was <a href="https://www.senate.gov/legislative/LIS/roll_call_votes/vote1181/vote_118_1_00235.htm" target="_blank" rel="noopener">moved forward</a>, three additional Republicans joined in the final vote against Brown. Sen. Ron Johnson (Wisconsin), Sen. Cynthia Lummis (Wyoming), and Marco Rubio (Florida) all voted against confirming Brown.

Brown has faced <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/watchdog-group-files-complaint-against-biden-joint-chiefs-nominee-over-race-based-hiring" target="_blank" rel="noopener">skepticism from conservative groups</a> who have pointed to previous comments and statements about hiring &#8220;for diversity” and calling the military a “white boys club,” suggesting that he would support diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives in the military. 
“You can’t let it just be happenstance that brings in the diversity whether it be race, gender, ethnic background, sexual orientation, socio-economic background. You really have to spend some time thinking about it because you may miss an opportunity looking at the slate of candidates and then asking some hard questions,” Brown said previously. “As we’re looking at some key positions, who are diverse candidates and are we making sure we are grooming them so they have the opportunity?”

The Senate began voting on the nominations later in the evening on Wednesday, confirming <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/joint-chiefs-nominee-knocks-tubervilles-hold-on-military-promotions">Gen. Charles &#8220;CQ&#8221; Brown Jr.</a> of the Air Force as the next chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and <a href="https://twitter.com/SenateCloakroom/status/1704653601690304625">setting up confirmation votes</a> for the other two nominees on Thursday.
Tuberville first placed <a href="https://www.tuberville.senate.gov/newsroom/press-releases/tuberville-demands-answers-from-the-pentagon/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">a &#8220;hold&#8221;</a> on general and flag officer nominations in February to protest a Pentagon policy allowing female service members <a href="https://www.military.com/daily-news/2023/02/16/military-cover-travel-costs-and-offer-leave-troops-seeking-abortions-fertility-treatment.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">expense-paid travel and up to three weeks&#8217; leave</a> for an elective abortion that he claims is illegal. The Department of Defense has <a href="https://www.armed-services.senate.gov/imo/media/doc/dod_briefing_on_non-covered_reproductive_healthcare_policies.pdf">referred</a> to a Department of Justice <a href="https://taskandpurpose.com/news/defense-department-travel-allowance-abortion/">opinion</a> to justify the policy.
In upholding his stance, Tuberville has objected to allowing the Democrat-controlled Senate from quickly approving the nominations in batches through a &#8220;<a href="https://www.senate.gov/about/research-tools/glossary.htm" target="_blank" rel="noopener">unanimous consent</a>&#8221; agreement.
Despite pushback from the Biden administration <a href="https://www.kaine.senate.gov/press-releases/kaine-hirono-and-colleagues-call-on-mcconnell-to-help-end-reckless-hold-on-military-promotions" target="_blank" rel="noopener">and other lawmakers</a>, Tuberville denied that his endeavor was hurting military readiness and he insisted that the Senate could still hold votes through regular order to approve individual nominations if necessary.

Hundreds of military confirmations have been held up so far, <a href="https://www.defense.gov/News/News-Stories/Article/Article/3492554/austin-praises-outgoing-chief-of-naval-operations/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">according to the Department of Defense.</a> A recent Congressional Research Service report estimated it would take more than <a href="https://taskandpurpose.com/news/tuberville-hold-700-hours/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">700 hours</a> of work to get through 273 confirmations on an individual basis.

Tuberville delivered remarks in which he said the Senate is dealing with a &#8220;lack of leadership,&#8221; arguing that the upper chamber could have been confirming one or two nominees each week over the last 200 days. He also said his &#8220;hold&#8221; remains in place until the Pentagon lifts its abortion policy.

Schumer Moves To Confirm Top Military Nominees After Tuberville Calls Audible

Republican presidential candidate <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/nikki-haley" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Nikki Haley</a> says that while the Biden administration started the political battle over abortions for service members, she does not support Sen. Tommy Tuberville (R-AL) holding up hundreds of military promotions in protest of the administration&#8217;s policy allowing expense-paid travel and up to three weeks leave for an elective abortion.
Haley&#8217;s position on the issue puts her in line with former New Jersey Governor <a href="https://thehill.com/homenews/4147500-christie-on-tubervilles-choice-to-block-military-promotions-i-dont-think-its-the-right-one/">Chris Christie</a>, who has also called out Tuberville on the campaign trail. Republican presidential candidates who support Tuberville&#8217;s actions include Florida Governor <a href="https://www.politico.com/news/2023/07/31/desantis-says-he-supports-sen-tommy-tubervilles-block-on-military-promotions-blames-pentagon-00109115">Ron DeSantis</a>, former Vice President <a href="https://www.politico.com/news/2023/06/25/pence-on-abortion-limits-we-just-cant-rest-or-relent-00103554">Mike Pence</a>, and pharmaceutical executive <a href="https://www.washingtonexaminer.com/policy/defense-national-security/vivek-ramaswamy-agrees-tommy-tuberville-military-hold">Vivek Ramaswamy</a>. Sen. Tim Scott&#8217;s (R-SC) office &#8220;would not say whether he supports Tuberville’s blockade,&#8221; The Post and Courier <a href="https://www.postandcourier.com/politics/scs-shaw-afb-impacted-by-sen-tommy-tubervilles-blockade-of-military-promotions/article_814705e4-3dd9-11ee-8853-a774935aeef9.html">reported</a> late last month.
The “hold” on general and flag officer promotions blocks the Democrat-controlled Senate from approving the nominations quickly and in batches through a “<a href="https://www.senate.gov/about/research-tools/glossary.htm">unanimous consent</a>” agreement. Tuberville stressed that the Senate could still hold a vote to approve individual nominations, a process he said would be “<a href="https://www.cnn.com/2023/07/10/politics/marine-corps-tuberville-nominations-hold/index.html">very easy to do</a>.”
Haley responded to the monthslong holdout when asked about the matter during a Sunday interview with CNN&#8217;s Jake Tapper on &#8220;State of the Union.&#8221;
&#8220;I know you have criticized his decision,&#8221; Tapper said. &#8220;The military says this is hurting readiness. I know, as a military spouse, you know military spouses are really upset about this.&#8221;
&#8220;Why is the Republican Party tolerating this?&#8221; Haley asked.
Haley responded that she disagreed with the reimbursement policy for travel for abortion and said that she would put an end to it if she becomes president.
&#8220;Secondly, we don&#8217;t need to be using military families as political pawns,&#8221; she said. &#8220;That&#8217;s a mistake.&#8221;

&#8220;The military members and families, they sacrifice enough. They don&#8217;t need to be a pawn in Congress,&#8221; she continued. &#8220;But look at the political games that continue to play. Chuck Schumer could still get this done if he went through and listed each member and had Congress vote on each member.&#8221;
She later noted that it was the Biden administration that started the entire situation, but &#8220;I&#8217;m not saying Senator Tuberville is right in doing this, because I don&#8217;t want to use them as pawns.&#8221;
&#8220;But if you love our military, if you are so adamant about it, then go and make Congress, Republicans and Democrats, have to go through person by person,&#8221; she added. &#8220;Do you honestly think they won&#8217;t say, OK, this is ridiculous, let&#8217;s put an end to it?&#8221;
&#8220;They will. But show your true grit by going out there and saying, fine, if you all are going to play the military for the pawns like this, let&#8217;s go member by member,&#8221; she continued. &#8220;Let&#8217;s make them pay the price. Let&#8217;s make them do their job. Let&#8217;s make them suffer so that they know what they&#8217;re doing to these military families. This isn&#8217;t about making it convenient for Congress. This is about making sure you&#8217;re doing right by members of the military. This is making sure you hold the Department of Defense accountable.&#8221;
