<p>President Donald Trump took a moment on Monday to cheer the cancellation of a planned award ceremony for Academy Award-winning actor and director Tom Hanks, saying that it was a step in the right direction for the United States Military Academy to step away from granting awards to “destructive, WOKE recipients.”</p>
<p>Trump touted the move in a post shared first on his Truth Social platform, where he also ripped into the Academy Awards and suggested that the annual award show broadcasts would likely achieve better ratings if they steered clear of woke culture as well.</p>

<p>“Our great West Point (getting greater all the time!) has smartly cancelled the Award Ceremony for actor Tom Hanks. Important move!” Trump crowed. “We don’t need destructive, WOKE recipients getting our cherished American Awards!!! Hopefully the Academy Awards, and other Fake Award Shows, will review their Standards and Practices in the name of Fairness and Justice. Watch their DEAD RATINGS SURGE!”</p>
<p>The ceremony, which was set to take place on September 25, was supposed to honor Hanks with the prestigious Sylvanus Thayer Award — given to an “outstanding citizen” based on their commitment to upholding the standards put forth by West Point: Duty, Honor, Country.</p>
<p>As <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/national-security/2025/09/06/tom-hanks-west-point/">reported</a> Saturday by The Washington Post, Army Col. (Ret.) Mark Bieger announced the ceremony’s cancellation in an email to faculty on Friday, saying, “This decision allows the Academy to continue its focus on its core mission of preparing cadets to lead, fight, and win as officers in the world’s most lethal force, the United States Army.”</p>
<p>The West Point Association of Graduates (WPAOG) announced that Hanks was to receive the award in June. At the time, WPAOG Board Chairman Robert A. McDonald, Class of 1975, said of the actor, “Tom Hanks has done more for the positive portrayal of the American service member, more for the caring of the American veteran, their caregivers and their family, and more for the American space program and all branches of government than many other Americans.”</p>
<p>Hanks, at the time, responded, “To have my first ever visit to the Academy be to accept such an honor as the Thayer Award is simply astounding. West Point’s legacy of leadership, character, and service to the nation is a powerful example for all Americans. To be recognized by an institution whose graduates have shaped our country’s history through selfless service is both humbling and meaningful.”</p>
<p>The actor has not yet responded to the news that the ceremony has been canceled, and it was unclear in the initial reports whether Hanks might still receive the award at a different time. Previous Thayer Award recipients include former President Barack Obama (2024), former President George W. Bush (2017), actor Gary Sinise (2015), former President Ronald Reagan (1989), and famed World War II Army aviator James Doolittle (1983), among others.</p>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Bill Maher came down hard on the liberal joke writers for “Saturday Night Live” over a skit they did in February which portrayed Trump supporters as racist.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The political commentator discussed his thoughts on the newest episode of Club Random, which featured fitness star Jillian Michaels as a guest. He was reacting to a skit with Tom Hanks from the “SNL” episode which features Hanks as a MAGA hat-wearing racist who wouldn’t shake the hand of a black man.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">“I hated it, too, and I said it on my show. I know. I hated it,” Maher said. “Wearing the MAGA hat, not shaking hands with a black person. And that’s when I thought, ‘You people don’t know MAGA people.’”</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">“I mean, they have their issues and I certainly have my issues with them … of course, there’s some racists everywhere who are that bad, but generally, all the MAGA people I know have no problem shaking hands with a black person. You’re just hysterical and you’re not helping,” the podcast host continued.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Maher insisted again that it’s a “lie that MAGA people won’t shake hands” with a black person. “I get it, it’s part of a skit and it’s an exaggeration and that’s comedy. It’s a little too delicate a subject to go there,” he said.</span></p>

I’m a comedian, when the premise isn’t real, I can’t go with it. The premise doesn’t ring true. It might have rang true X years ago. It doesn’t now.”</span></p>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Tom Hanks’ daughter, E.A. Hanks, short for Elizabeth Anne, has written a memoir about taking a road trip to connect with her mother’s family and learn more about her. The 42-year-old recently released an excerpt from her new book, “The 10: A Memoir of Family And The Open Road.”</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The author talks about the difficult time she had growing up the daughter of Samantha Lewes, who she speculates had multiple mental disorders. Lewes (whose birth name is Susan Dillingham) and the “Forrest Gump” star were married from 1978 until 1987 after falling in love during college. E.A.&#8217;s older brother, Colin Hanks, is a Hollywood actor now.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">“I am a kid from the First (non-famous) Marriage. My only memories of my parents in the same place at the same time are Colin’s high school graduation, then my high school graduation,” she said in the book excerpt shared with </span><a href="https://people.com/ea-hanks-childhood-book-excerpt-exclusive-11707582"><span style="font-weight: 400;">People</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">. “I have one picture of me standing between my parents. In it, my mother’s best wig is slightly askew.”</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The author said she was “born in Burbank” but has “few memories of the early years in Los Angeles” because her mom moved them to Sacramento after divorcing Hanks.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">“Eventually a divorce agreement was settled, and I would visit my dad and stepmother (and soon enough my younger half brothers) on the weekends and during summers, but from 5 to 14, years filled with confusion, violence, deprivation, and love, I was a Sacramento girl,” she wrote of visiting with Hanks&#8217; current wife, Rita Wilson, who Hanks married in 1988.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">“I lived in a white house with columns, a backyard with a pool, and a bedroom with pictures of horses plastered on every wall,” E.A. added.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The author recalled that “as the years went on,” her mother’s mental health began to decline.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">“The backyard became so full of dog sh** that you couldn’t walk around it, the house stank of smoke. The fridge was bare or full of expired food more often than not, and my mother spent more and more time in her big four-poster bed, poring over the Bible,” she continued in the excerpt.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">“One night, her emotional violence became physical violence, and in the aftermath, I moved to Los Angeles, right smack in the middle of the seventh grade,” E.A. wrote. She said the custody arrangement changed after that, and then, during her senior year of high school, her mom “called to say she was dying.”</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Lewes died from lung cancer in 2002 at age 49 when E.A. was 19. E.A. told People she believed her mother had undiagnosed bipolar disorder with episodes of extreme paranoia and delusion.</span></p>

<p style="font-weight: 400;">Wearing a red Make America Great Again hat again as “Doug,” a Trump supporter, Hanks answered a question correctly, then stated that if more people went to church, America would be better off. When Kenan Thompson, as host “Darnell Hayes,” crossed over to congratulate him on his answer, Hanks recoiled at first, then relented after Thompson said, “It’s only a handshake.”</p>
<p style="font-weight: 400;">Hanks&#8217; reluctance to shake Thompson’s hand struck many people as portraying Trump supporters as racist.</p>
<p style="font-weight: 400;">The show offered consistent gibes at President Donald Trump; in one sketch, parodying the song “I Dreamed A Dream” from “Les Miserables,” a member of the cast sang, “I dreamed a dream that King Kong died, then I remembered he&#8217;s in Florida.” In another sketch, actor Martin Short walked onstage, and comedian Steve Martin asked, “Do you have your passport on you? ICE, get him!” That prompted ICE employees to drag Short off the stage, yelling, “No! I&#8217;ll name names! Mike Myers! Jim Carrey!”</p>
<p style="font-weight: 400;">Weekend Update segment anchor Colin Jost quipped, “It is an honor and a thrill to be hosting Weekend Update for the 50th, and if it was up to our president, final season of SNL.”</p>
<p style="font-weight: 400;">In 2016, Hanks appeared on “Black Jeopardy” as “Doug,” saying, “They told me a fella could win some money, so let’s win me some money. Get’ er done.”</p>

I like that,” Hanks recoiled from the outstretched hand, then took it, visibly shaking.</p>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;"><a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/tom-hanks" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Tom Hanks</a> and wife actress Rita Wilson’s home in Los Angeles was reportedly burglarized, making the superstar couple the latest celebrities to have their home hit by burglars.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Law enforcement sources told </span><a href="https://www.tmz.com/2024/08/05/tom-hanks-rita-wilson-home-burglarized-los-angeles/?adid=social-tw"><span style="font-weight: 400;">TMZ</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> that a few weeks back, the guest home on the property of the 68-year-old actor was broken into in broad daylight by thieves who smashed the glass to get in.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Sources said the break-in set off the alarm, but apparently didn’t deter the thieves. Luckily, both the “Forrest Gump” star and his wife were out of town and were not injured in the attack on their property, the outlet noted.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The main home was not breached and it is unclear what, if anything, was stolen. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">In March, the LAPD said there had been over 900 residential burglaries across the city since January, some of which were committed by burglars who may be using new technology to circumvent home security systems.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">On March 4, the Wilshire department of the LAPD acknowledged, “Wilshire area has been subjected to various residential burglaries, involving 3-4 suspects using Wi-Fi jammers as they enter victims’ residences. The Los Angeles Police Department is seeking your help to deter such burglaries.”</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">No arrests have been announced in the reported burglary at the Hanks home as of the time of this publication.</span></p>

<p>&#8220;Masters of the Air&#8221; is a nine-episode miniseries based on Donald L. Miller&#8217;s book by the same name, which follows American bomber pilots of the Eighth Air Force&#8217;s 100th Bomb Group, who repeatedly risked flying at 25,000 feet in daylight to conduct &#8220;perilous bombing raids over Nazi Germany, dealing with frigid temperatures, lack of oxygen and sheer terror,&#8221; the official logline read, per <a href="https://deadline.com/2023/10/masters-of-the-air-premiere-date-world-war-ii-drama-austin-butler-photos-trailer-1235564915/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Deadline</a> magazine.</p>

And it’s going to have some degree of lifelike quality. That’s certainly an artistic challenge but it’s also a legal one.”</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The actor went on to discuss how “all of the guilds, all of the agencies, and all of the legal firms” are currently examining “the legal ramifications of my face and my voice and everybody else’s being our intellectual property.”</span></p>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">“Only the first do the work of creating a more perfect union,” the “Forrest Gump” actor said. &#8220;We are all in a cage match, mixed martial arts battle royale with agents of intolerance and braying incompetence, the malevolent equals to Imperial stormtroopers, Lex Luthor, and Loki. And we could use a superhero right now.” </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">&#8220;There ain’t no Superman, nor anyone else in his Justice League,&#8221; Hanks said. &#8220;In the never-ending battle, you have all officially joined as of today. The difference is in how truly you believe, in how vociferously you promote, in how tightly you hold onto the truth that is self-evident: that of course we are all created equally yet differently, and of course, we are all in this together.&#8221;</span></p>

<p>The headline read, &#8220;Tom Hanks &#8216;Embroiled In Heated Altercation&#8217; At &#8216;Asteroid City&#8217; Premiere In Cannes.&#8221; Wilson and the &#8220;Forrest Gump&#8221; star were at the festival for the premiere of their Wes Anderson movie &#8220;Asteroid City.&#8221;</p>
<p>The actress captioned the screenshot, &#8220;This is called I can&#8217;t hear you. People are screaming. What did you say? Where are we supposed to go?'&#8221;</p>
