Voters on Thursday elected Analilia Mejia, a leftist political organizer endorsed by Bernie Sanders, to replace Democratic Gov. Mikie Sherrill in New Jersey’s 11th Congressional District.
With 94% of the vote reported, Mejia defeated Republican Joe Hathaway by a 20-point margin, according to The New York Times, and will serve in Congress for at least the next eight months.
Mejia’s victory further narrows Republicans&#8217; majority in the U.S. House and represents a growing pattern of Democratic performance in special elections.
In her victory speech, Mejia blasted Republicans nationwide as “radicals who are willing to upend our democracy, subvert our Constitution, and act with impunity.”
“We must stop them,” she said, <a href="https://www.politico.com/news/2026/04/16/progressive-analilia-mejia-coasts-to-victory-in-new-jersey-special-house-election-00878188">according to Politico</a>. “These radicals will watch Rome burn with all of us within, and they are simply cowards – cowards unwilling to stand up to this madness. But we stand up, we resist, we will not allow it to continue.”
The leftist, who served as the national political director for Bernie Sanders’ 2020 presidential campaign, <a href="https://www.analiliafornj.com/economy-for-everyone">ran on</a> Medicare for all, abolishing ICE, and impeaching conservative Supreme Court justices.
Thursday’s results, however, raised some red flags for the Democratic Party, as Mejia fared notably worse in the district’s Jewish neighborhoods.
“There have been clear pockets of resistance to Mejia in Livingston and Millburn, two large typically Democratic towns with large Jewish populations that may be uncomfortable with Mejia&#8217;s left-wing politics, particularly on Israel,” <a href="https://x.com/SteveKornacki/status/2044971630976245902?s=20">Steve Kornacki,</a> Chief Data Analyst for NBC News, said.
In Livingston, New Jersey, a town with a large Jewish population, support shifted sharply away from the Democrats.
“Livingston is one of the most Jewish towns in New Jersey. It just swung 70+ points toward Republicans compared to 2024 and last year’s gubernatorial race,” Evan Rosenfeld, Deputy Digital Director of The Bulwark, said. “Democrats should pay attention to this or it may very well come back to bite them in ‘26 or ‘28.”

A vocal critic of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Mejia is likely to align herself with the &#8220;Squad&#8221; in Congress. She has called Israel’s military campaign in Gaza a &#8220;<a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2026/04/16/nyregion/analilia-mejia-joe-hathaway-congress-nj.html">genocide</a>&#8220; and refused to rule out conditioning aid to the Jewish state.
Mejia stunned the Democratic establishment in February by <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2026/02/05/us/elections/results-new-jersey-us-house-11-special.html">narrowly</a> defeating a crowded field of candidates, highlighting a surge of leftist energy within the party.

Far-Left Rep. <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/ilhan-omar" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Ilhan Omar</a> (D-MN) survived her Democratic primary race on Tuesday, winning by a more comfortable margin than her 2022 race when she was nearly upset. 
Omar, who <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/heres-how-republicans-could-vote-to-oust-ilhan-omar-in-tuesdays-primary" target="_blank" rel="noopener">was seen</a> as vulnerable after two of her fellow “Squad” members lost primary races earlier this year, won the Democratic nomination for Minnesota’s 5th Congressional District with 56% of the vote. Challenger Don Samuels received 42.9% after almost pulling off an upset two years ago when he lost to Omar by just 2,500 votes. 
In a statement on X, Omar claimed that her win was a defeat for “special interests” and a win for “our movement.” 
“Whether it’s universal school meals, student debt cancellation, climate action, or a just foreign policy that reflects our values – the Fifth District showed tonight that we want to drive the nation toward a better future,” she said. “And our work is far from over. From protecting reproductive healthcare to reforming the Supreme Court to ending the genocide in Gaza to combatting the climate crisis–we will continue to fight for a more just world.”
Omar built a substantial fundraising advantage over Samuels, <a href="https://apnews.com/article/minnesota-primary-senate-house-omar-ccc166cf0b9c42fb9dbb98ba0d35c258" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reportedly</a> raising around $6.2 million compared to Samuels&#8217; $1.4 million. Polling before the race also indicated that Omar would win, with one poll from July showing her with a 27-point lead. 
Earlier this year, Omar&#8217;s fellow “Squad” members Rep. Jamaal Bowman (D-NY) and Rep. Cori Bush (D-MO) lost widely watched primaries. 
Those members, along with Omar, have come under sharp criticism for their opposition to Israel. The United Democracy Project, a super PAC affiliated with the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC), targeted Bowman and Bush with $24 million in spending. The super PAC did not spend money against Omar this cycle. 
During the race, Samuels tried to highlight his more pro-Israel views in contrast to Omar, who he <a href="https://www.washingtonexaminer.com/news/campaigns/congressional/3120321/ilhan-omar-primary-squad-minnesota-elections/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">called</a> a “pawn for Hamas.”

Galvanized by Rep. Cori Bush’s (D-MO) primary defeat, Minnesota Republicans are mounting an eleventh-hour campaign to make Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) the latest “Squad” member to lose her job.
Minnesota voters will decide Omar’s fate in Tuesday’s primary, in which she will face off against three Democratic challengers. Minnesota allows voters to participate in the primary of their choice, regardless of party affiliation. Since Republican candidate Dalia Al-Aqidi is <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/fight-between-good-and-evil-muslim-journalist-running-against-ilhan-omar-says-shes-taking-a-stand-for-israel">running unopposed</a>, there is a push for Minnesota Republicans to vote for one of Omar’s challengers.
The last-minute push—word of which is <a href="https://x.com/StopAntisemites/status/1821362204144279835">largely</a> <a href="https://x.com/MarinaMedvin/status/1821315707302269111">being</a> <a href="https://x.com/iamBrianBJ/status/1821027997341605973">spread</a> on X—comes after two of Omar’s fellow Squad members had significant upsets in their Democratic primaries this year. Bush lost her primary last week, and Rep. Jamaal Bowman (D-NY) lost in June. Bush and Bowman’s increasingly anti-Israel rhetoric is widely seen to have alienated voters.
Don Samuels, who came within 2,500 votes of <a href="https://ballotpedia.org/Minnesota%27s_5th_Congressional_District_election,_2022">defeating</a> Omar in 2022, is once again her top challenger.
Before running for Congress, Samuels was a Minneapolis City Councilman and Minneapolis School Board member. The Jamaican-born Samuels holds more pro-Israel views than Omar, who has faced criticism for her anti-Semitic and anti-Israel rhetoric since assuming office in 2019. Omar has been embroiled in controversy for ramping up that rhetoric in the wake of  Hamas’s  October 7 massacre of over 1,000 Israelis.
In April, Samuels attacked Omar for voting against bipartisan legislation aimed at curbing Iran, which had near-unanimous support from Democrats.

Samuels echoes mainstream Democratic positions on Israel and the Gaza War. On <a href="https://www.donsamuels.com/issues/middle-east/">his website</a>, he calls for Hamas to return hostages and lose its governing power in Gaza, but also for Israel to halt construction of new settlements and work towards a two-state solution.
Hoping to put a wider margin between herself and Samuels, Omar has boosted her fundraising efforts, reporting approximately $6.2 million in her pre-primary financial disclosure, according to <a href="https://apnews.com/article/minnesota-primary-senate-house-omar-ccc166cf0b9c42fb9dbb98ba0d35c258">the Associated Press</a>. Samuels has raised around $1.4 million. 
Bush and Bowman attribute their losses to the United Democracy Project, a super PAC affiliated with the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) which spent at least <a href="https://forward.com/fast-forward/641967/ilhan-omar-cori-bush-aipac-israel/">$24 million</a> to oust them.

The United Democracy Project has not gotten involved in Omar’s race. In a Wednesday interview with the Forward, Samuels said he thinks AIPAC  is “missing an opportunity.&#8221;
A <a href="https://projects.fivethirtyeight.com/polls/house/2024/minnesota/5/">July poll</a> shows Omar leading Samuels by 27 points. An internal poll released by the Samuels campaign showed him slightly trailing Omar with over 20 percent of voters still undecided.

Bush concluded by aiming a personal attack at Bell, currently serving as St. Louis County prosecuting attorney, alluding to an ongoing sex discrimination suit filed against his office. &#8220;The new member of Congress who will be taking over in January, you know, right before his trial starts &#8230; I&#8217;m sorry,&#8221; she said.

Bush got her start as an activist in Ferguson after the shooting death of Michael Brown by police officer Darren Wilson, and has since used debunked claims about Brown to elevate herself and push for radical policies like &#8220;defund the police.&#8221; She toppled incumbent Rep. William &#8220;Lacy&#8221; Clay Jr. (D-MO) in 2020, but lost to Bell in Tuesday&#8217;s Democratic primary 51.2-45.6.
The soon-to-be-former Missouri Congresswoman has repeatedly blamed AIPAC for her plummeting poll numbers, after the organization <a href="https://www.axios.com/2024/08/04/cori-bush-wesley-bell-aipac-negative-ads" target="_blank" rel="noopener">dumped $9 million</a> into ads supporting Bell in his efforts to oust her. Fellow &#8220;Squad&#8221; member Jamaal Bowman — who also sided with anti-Israel protesters in the wake of last year&#8217;s October 7 massacre — was ousted in similar fashion earlier this summer, and has also blamed AIPAC for his political demise.
Bush is also under investigation for money paid out to her security-guard-turned-husband, especially as she retains expensive private security while calling for fewer police protections for her own constituents.

Members of the far-left “Squad” threw their support behind Tim Walz shortly after Vice President Kamala Harris tapped the Minnesota governor as her running mate.
Walz on Tuesday racked up endorsements from Democratic Reps. Ilhan Omar (MN), Jamaal Bowman (NY), and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (NY). The trio share Walz’s progressive positions on a number of issues, including illegal immigration and diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives.
The “Squad’s” swift embrace of Walz could cause problems for the Harris campaign. Bowman lost his June primary to a moderate New York Democrat after supporters and voters alike <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/far-left-democrat-jamaal-bowman-loses-primary-after-becoming-full-scale-anti-semite">deserted</a> the congressman over his radical anti-Israel statements. Bowman, best known for <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/bowman-charged-over-fire-alarm-incident">pulling a fire alarm</a> in Congress in a bid to disrupt a vote, claimed that videos of Hamas terrorists beheading babies on Oct. 7 were “Israeli propaganda.”

Dozens of Democratic lawmakers have announced they will boycott Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s Wednesday address to a joint session of Congress to protest Israel’s war against Hamas.
Boycotters include high-profile Democrats like Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) and Senate Majority Whip Dick Durbin, <a href="https://x.com/SenatorDurbin/status/1815885636714520977">who said</a> he stands by Israel but will “not stand and cheer its current Prime Minister.”
Also boycotting the speech: members of the far-left “Squad.”
Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) <a href="https://x.com/AOC/status/1815842132269158845">said</a> Wednesday is a “dark day,” and Rep. Rashida Tlaib <a href="https://x.com/RepRashida/status/1815812443207020699">called</a> for Netanyahu to be arrested and sent to the International Criminal Court. Rep. Ilan Omar (D-MN) said she would be skipping the speech, but gave her ticket to family members of a hostage held in Gaza, <a href="https://www.politico.com/newsletters/inside-congress/2024/07/23/breaking-down-the-netanyahu-speech-no-shows-00170731">Politico reported</a>.
A group of progressive lawmakers is planning to attend a <a href="https://www.americanprogress.org/press/event-advisory-peace-is-possible-an-alternative-vision-for-israel-and-palestine/">counter event</a> in the Capitol, “Peace is Possible: An Alternative Vision for Israel and Palestine,” hosted by left-wing nonprofits. Democratic Reps. Pramila Jayapal (WA) and Jim McGovern (MA) will deliver remarks during the event in addition to various activists.
Vice President Kamala Harris, now the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee, will also skip Netanyahu’s speech, opting to attend a convention for the historically-black Zeta Phi Beta sorority. Senate Foreign Relations Committee Chairman Ben Cardin will preside over the event in Harris’s stead.
Democrats aren’t alone in their boycott. Republican Rep. Thomas Massie (KY) <a href="https://x.com/RepThomasMassie/status/1816096291291623517">also announced</a> he will not attend the address, which he deemed “political theater.” In April, Massie <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/here-are-the-14-reps-who-voted-against-a-house-resolution-condemning-irans-attack-on-israel">voted against</a> a resolution condemning Iran’s missile attack on Israel and the slogan “From the river to the sea, Palestine will be free,” which calls for the elimination of the Jewish state.
Both Democrat Sen. Tim Kaine (VA) and Republican Vice Presidential nominee Sen. JD Vance voiced their support for Israel but will <a href="https://thehill.com/policy/international/4786602-vance-netanyahu-speech-trump-2024/#:~:text=%E2%80%9CHe%20will%20not%2C%20however%2C,source%20familiar%20with%20the%20matter.">not be in attendance</a> due to scheduling conflicts.
About 60 Democrats skipped Netanyahu’s last address about Iran to Congress in 2015, the Associated Press <a href="https://apnews.com/article/israel-democrats-netanyahu-congress-address-boycott-war-54d4abfb517e399b22324d4c535427aa">reported</a>.
Netanyahu <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/mike-johnson-invites-netanyahu-to-address-congress-rips-schumer-for-interfering-in-israels-politics">was invited</a> to speak by the four top Congressional leaders: Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY), House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY), House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA), and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY).
Netanyahu is slated to speak at 2:00 p.m. EST.
Ahead of Netanyahu’s speech, protests are erupting in and around the Watergate Hotel, where the prime minister is staying, as well as outside the Capitol. Video shows a protester outside the Watergate wearing a keffiyeh and threatening to kill Jews and burn them.

Around 200 protesters were arrested yesterday after making a ruckus inside the Capitol’s Cannon Rotunda on Tuesday, causing staff and interns to barricade themselves in their offices, Fox News <a href="https://www.foxnews.com/politics/anti-israel-agitators-invade-capitol-hill-building-eve-netanyahu-address">reported</a>.
Speaker Johnson <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/johnson-netanyahu-speech-disruptors-will-be-arrested">warned</a> that visiting disruptors of the speech would face arrest in a letter sent to his colleagues on Tuesday. Radical progressive group Justice Democrats blamed House Minority Leader <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/hakeem-jeffries" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Hakeem Jeffries</a> (D-NY) for the blowout loss handed to Squad-aligned Rep. Jamaal Bowman (D-NY) in Tuesday&#8217;s primary election — and Jeffries&#8217; spokesperson fired right back.
Bowman, who leaned into the anti-Israel protests after October 7th and was backed by other far-Left members of Congress like Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) and Senator Bernie Sanders (I-VT), <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/far-left-democrat-jamaal-bowman-loses-primary-after-becoming-full-scale-anti-semite" target="_blank" rel="noopener">lost to George Latimer</a> by 17 points.
According to New York&#8217;s Democratic Party Chair Jay Jacobs, the <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2024/06/26/nyregion/jamaal-bowman-squad-left.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reason for Bowman&#8217;s loss</a> was simple: &#8220;The voters in this district, and in other districts across the country, frankly, are just not buying some of the things that these candidates are selling. And now, moderate voters are getting engaged, they’re paying attention and they’re coming to the polls.&#8221;
But Usamah Andrabi, a spokesman for Justice Democrats, told The New York Times that the real problem was Jeffries — in spite of the fact that he had endorsed Bowman ahead of the primary.
&#8220;Jamaal Bowman is a model, not a warning, for what political leadership can look like,&#8221; he said. &#8220;The outcome of this election is a reflection on his leadership and whether Hakeem Jeffries stood up to Republican megadonors.&#8221;
Jeffries&#8217; spokeswoman Christie Stephenson fired right back, arguing that her boss&#8217; tenure would be judged based on whether he delivered a majority in the House in November. &#8220;The so-called Justice Democrats stated back in 2017 that their goal was to destroy the Democratic Party,&#8221; she said, noting that they had even threatened to primary Jeffries. “They have failed miserably in every way. Is anyone surprised?&#8221;

Bowman is not the only Squad-adjacent Democrat whose House seat is in jeopardy. Rep. Cori Bush (D-MO), who also aligned herself with the anti-Israel protesters in the aftermath of October 7th, is facing a <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/jamaal-bowman-isnt-the-only-squad-member-on-the-chopping-block" target="_blank" rel="noopener">tough primary challenge</a> from St. Louis prosecuting attorney Wesley Bell.

Representative Jamaal Bowman (D-NY) got trounced in his primary on Tuesday, but he is not the only &#8220;Squad&#8221; member facing the chopping block this primary season.
Representative Cori Bush (D-MO) is locked in a dead heat with her primary challenger, St. Louis County prosecuting attorney Wesley Bell, ahead of their August 6 election, according to one poll.
Bush, who represents the St. Louis area, is polling at 42%, one point lower than Bell at 43%, <a href="https://thehill.com/homenews/campaign/4740969-cori-bush-challenger-wesley-bell-locked-in-dead-heat-survey/damp/?nxs-test=damp" target="_blank" rel="noopener">according</a> to polling from The Mellman Group for the organization Democratic Majority for Israel, which endorsed Bell.
This is a significant drop for Bush from January, when the same polling firm found her leading by 16 points.
In the more recent poll, Bell&#8217;s lead is within the margin of error, but some indicators suggest he may have a greater advantage.
He is leading Bush by 10 points among the most consistent primary voters — 49% to Bush&#8217;s 39%, according to the poll.
He also leads Bush in job approval, with 61% saying they approve of Bell&#8217;s job performance compared to just 49% for Bush.
Bell also has an edge in favorability, with 64% of voters viewing him favorably compared to Bush&#8217;s 60%.
In New York on Tuesday night, Bowman lost his Democratic primary to George Latimer, who served as County Executive for Westchester County.
Bowman&#8217;s ousting marked the first election loss for the group of progressive House lawmakers nicknamed the &#8220;Squad,&#8221; which includes Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.
Bowman&#8217;s primary involved fiery attacks by the two Democrats, with Latimer criticizing Bowman&#8217;s opposition to Israel’s war in Gaza as being out of sync with voters in his district, which includes Westchester County&#8217;s Jewish population.
Meanwhile, Bowman <a href="https://www.cnn.com/2024/06/25/politics/george-latimer-jamaal-bowman-new-york-16-primary/index.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">was</a> forced to apologize for telling a group of pro-Palestinian protesters that reports of sexual violence by Hamas were &#8220;propaganda.&#8221;
Latimer also said Bowman, the first black man to represent his district, enjoys “an obvious ethnic benefit.”

Rep. Cori Bush (D-MO) claimed in her 2022 book that she once performed a miracle, healing a woman with tumors by laying hands on her and praying over her.
Bush, who defeated incumbent Rep. William &#8220;Lacy&#8221; Clay in 2020 and promptly aligned herself with the far left &#8220;Squad&#8221; — originally Reps. Ilhan Omar (D-MN), Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY), Ayanna Pressley (D-MA) and Rashida Tlaib (D-MI) — made the claim in her 2022 book, but it went unnoticed until The New York Post&#8217;s Jonathan Levine <a href="https://nypost.com/2024/06/15/us-news/cori-bush-claimed-to-performed-miracles-cured-tumors-in-autobiography/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">published a piece</a> over the weekend.
&#8220;As I learned how to apply God’s Word to my life in new ways, I better understood the power that was already residing in me,&#8221; Bush wrote in &#8216;The Forerunner: A Story of Pain and Perseverance in America.'&#8221;
&#8220;It was there, waiting for me to acknowledge it, to use it. I had the confidence to heal others with God’s power,&#8221; she continued, and went on to give several examples.
&#8220;One woman whom we met had several visible tumors on her torso. She was due to have surgery but lacked health insurance and living in the park. One of the tumors was particularly painful to her. I laid hands on her and prayed, and I felt that my hand was no longer touching a tumor. It shrank along with the others on her body,&#8221; Bush claimed.
She also claimed to have cured a toddler who couldn&#8217;t walk as the result of a brain bleed shortly after birth: &#8220;I carried the child from the prayer room in the back of the church out into the sanctuary &#8230; &#8216;Walk,&#8217; I said gently to the three-year-old girl, &#8216;you will walk.&#8217; And this girl took her first step. Then another, and another. She walked. Her grandmother walked into the sanctuary just in time to see the child take about two dozen steps. She screamed, and then she kept screaming. When she caught her breath, she looked at me in wonder and said &#8216;Praise God.&#8217; She grabbed her granddaughter and walked with her out of the church.&#8221;
According to Levine, Bush&#8217;s miracle claims went largely unnoticed despite her book tour — but PBS&#8217; Margaret Hoover did ask her about them.

Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-MI) got testy with Fox Business Reporter Hillary Vaughn over a question about a rally in her home district where anti-Israel protesters chanted &#8220;Death to America&#8221; and called for the eradication of Israel.
The <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/protesters-at-islamic-event-in-americas-jihad-capital-chant-death-to-america" target="_blank" rel="noopener">rally in question</a>, which took place in Dearborn, Michigan, featured a speaker named Tarek Bazzi, who is affiliated with the Hadi Institute. He said: &#8220;We have been asked in the past why our protests on the International Al-Quds Day are so anti-America. Why don’t we just focus on Israel and not talk so much about America? Gaza has shown the entire world why their protests are so anti-America. Because it’s the United States government that provides the funds for all of the atrocities that we just heard about.&#8221;
Attendees at the rally responded to him by shouting, &#8220;Death to America!&#8221; and &#8220;Death to Israel!&#8221;
Vaughn approached Tlaib in a hallway on Capitol Hill, asking several times whether She would respond to the chants. At first, the Michigan Congresswoman said she wouldn&#8217;t talk to anyone from Fox.

&#8220;Congresswoman Tlaib —&#8221; Vaughn began, but Tlaib interrupted before she could even get the question out.
&#8220;I don’t talk to Fox News! I don’t talk to Fox News!&#8221; she insisted.
&#8220;At a rally &#8230; in your district —&#8221; Vaughn tried again, but Tlaib pushed back.
&#8220;I’m not talking to Fox News.,&#8221; she said again.
&#8220;People were chanting &#8216;death to America.&#8217; Do you condemn?&#8221; Vaughn asked.
 &#8220;I do not talk to Fox News,&#8221; Tlaib repeated.
&#8220;But do you condemn chants of death to America?&#8221; Vaughn asked once more.
 &#8220;I don’t talk to people that use racist tropes,&#8221; Tlaib said then, suggesting that Vaughn&#8217;s network was guilty of that.
Vaughn pressed again, asking, &#8220;Why can’t you just say whether or not you condemn —&#8221;
But Tlaib interrupted her again, saying, &#8220;Because I don’t talk to Fox News.&#8221;
&#8220;— people chanting &#8216;death to America?'&#8221; Vaughn completed her thought, then asked, &#8220;Why are you afraid to talk to Fox?&#8221;

Vaughn tried one more tack, noting that some might see the &#8220;death to America&#8221; chants as racist.
&#8220;Is &#8216;death to America&#8217; racist?” Is chanting &#8216;death to America&#8217; racist?&#8221; she asked.
&#8220;Never talk to Fox News,&#8221; Tlaib said again, adding, &#8220;I’m talking about your guys’s racist tropes. You know, you guys are — you guys know exactly what you do. And I know you’re Islamophobic, but you guys gotta go deal with it on your own selves, not going to use me.&#8221;
