Two Democratic lawmakers are pushing President <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/joe-biden" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Joe Biden</a> to sign on to an effort to restrict presidential authority over the use of nuclear weapons ahead of President-elect Donald Trump taking office.
Sen. Ed Markey of Massachusetts and Rep. Ted Lieu of California <a href="https://www.markey.senate.gov/news/press-releases/with-trump-returning-to-office-sen-markey-rep-lieu-urge-biden-administration-to-place-limits-on-presidential-authority-to-start-nuclear-war" target="_blank" rel="noopener">wrote</a> to Biden on Thursday to urge him to support legislation that would block presidents from ordering a first-strike with a nuclear weapon. Markey and Lieu’s legislation, the Restricting First Use of Nuclear Weapons Act, has been introduced to Congress numerous times since 2015.
“Mr. President, with just weeks left in office, you can safeguard the system against Donald Trump or any future unstable president, and make it constitutional,” the Democratic lawmakers wrote.
To make their case, they provided examples of military leaders who, under the Nixon and Trump administrations, took steps to undermine the president’s constitutional authority over nuclear weapons. Rather than denouncing such action, the lawmakers argued that a legislative fix is needed to keep the decision to launch a preemptive nuclear strike out of the hands of “just one fallible human.”
Despite the concerns of former Defense Secretary James Schlesinger under former President Richard Nixon and former Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Mark Milley under Trump, neither president threatened to launch a preemptive nuclear strike.
“We urge you to announce that henceforth it will be the policy of the United States that it will not initiate a nuclear first strike without express authorization from Congress,” the lawmakers wrote.

According to the Democrats, under the legislation, “A president could order a nuclear launch only if (1) Congress had approved the decision, providing a constitutional check on executive power or (2) the United States had already been attacked with a nuclear weapon.&#8221;
“This would be infinitely safer than our current doctrine,” they wrote.

A watchdog group filed an ethics complaint on Monday against several members of Congress including Rep. <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/nancy-pelosi" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Nancy Pelosi</a> (D-CA) and Rep. <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/alexandria-ocasio-cortez" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez</a> (D-NY), accusing the Democratic lawmakers of abusing official resources for political benefit. 
The Foundation for Accountability and Civic Trust (FACT) filed the complaint to the Office of Congressional Ethics against Reps. Cori Bush (D-MO), Jamaal Bowman (D-NY), Sean Casten (D-IL), Greg Casar (D-TX), Maxwell Frost (D-FL), Ted Lieu (D-CA), Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY), Ilhan Omar (D-MN), and Ritchie Torres (D-NY). They are all accused of linking official government resources to their campaign accounts, a violation of federal law and House ethics rules regulating the social media activity of Congress.
The lawmakers “have all published numerous social media posts on their campaign accounts either using official government resources or re-posting official government content, including official photographs and video, work product, and official social media posts,” according to a copy of the <a href="https://65db7681-e755-4cff-abe7-1d9e373df4db.usrfiles.com/ugd/65db76_a61e7c9a334a4837835b7e47e084a9c3.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">complaint</a> first shared with The Daily Wire. 
FACT said that the violations are serious because they allow politicians to give a sense of official legitimacy to campaign accounts. 
“Though to some it may seem like a simple thing on the surface, the Members choosing to break this law do it for a reason — it advantages them politically. The various codes governing elected officials’ behavior all purposefully — and wisely — prevent Members from blatantly leveraging their currently held office to either get reelected or to use their position to gain a future position,” the letter said. 
The complaint included about 91 pages of evidence documenting the violations of official House rules. One example included Pelosi posting House January 6 footage from her official campaign account. 
“This is not an isolated incident. These violations are rampant and obvious, and clearly the OCE’s failure to act has encouraged continued violations. This failure has also incentivized these Members to use House proceedings for political campaigning rather than doing what is in the best interest of the country,” FACT Executive Director Kendra Arnold told The Daily Wire.

 “Likewise, it is also clear why these Members are doing this, it&#8217;s for a political advantage and one that is paid for by the taxpayers. The OCE has both the authority and a clear responsibility to ensure each ethics violation is dealt with swiftly. Not doing so both permits clear violations to continue and erodes the public’s trust in the OCE itself,” she added. 
FACT has <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/government-watchdog-files-ethics-complaint-against-florida-democrat-congressman-over-alleged-abuse-of-official-resources" target="_blank" rel="noopener">filed similar individual complaints</a> against other members of Congress this year, including Frost, Casten, and Rep. Leaders of the House Democrats said they &#8220;expect&#8221; House Speaker <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/kevin-mccarthy">Kevin McCarthy</a> (R-CA) to queue up a Ukraine aid vote following the passage of a <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/house-passes-stopgap-spending-measure-with-no-additional-support-for-ukraine">short-term spending bill</a> that averted a <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/government-shutdown">government shutdown</a>.
The joint statement, <a href="https://democraticleader.house.gov/media/press-releases/joint-house-democratic-leadership-statement-passage-continuing-resolution">released</a> by the office of House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) on Saturday, was quickly referred to as a &#8220;side deal&#8221; with Democrats by some Republicans who opposed the 45-day continuing resolution.
&#8220;When the House returns, we expect Speaker McCarthy to advance a bill to the House Floor for an up-or-down vote that supports Ukraine, consistent with his commitment to making sure that Vladimir Putin, Russia and authoritarianism are defeated,&#8221; the joint statement said. &#8220;We must stand with the Ukrainian people until victory is won.&#8221;
The statement was issued by Jeffries, Democratic Whip Katherine Clark (D-MA), Caucus Chair Pete Aguilar (D-CA), and Vice Chair Ted Lieu (D-CA).
The House passed a 45-day continuing resolution <a href="https://apnews.com/article/congress-ukraine-budget-security-assistance-799067491a1bba9671b4dfdf491d0a8e">without more aid for Ukraine</a> — which is more than a year and a half into a conflict to fend off Russian invaders — by a <a href="https://clerk.house.gov/Votes/2023513">335-91 vote.</a> The Democrat-led Senate approved it, and President Joe Biden signed the bill on Saturday night. New Mexico Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham faced intense backlash, including from leftists, for banning law abiding people from being able to carry guns in Albuquerque and the surrounding county for at least the next 30 days.
Grisham <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/new-mexico-governor-suspends-peoples-right-to-carry-guns-in-albuquerque">signed</a> an executive order on Thursday declaring that gun violence was a public health emergency in the Democrat-controlled state.
On Friday, Grisham unilaterally suspended open and concealed carry laws in Albuquerque and the surrounding area. She said that she could further lengthen or renew her order — which was immediately slammed by many as being unconstitutional.
Grisham effectively admitted that her order might be unconstitutional when she conceded that she might not win legal challenges filed against the order.
Some of the criticism against Grisham came from an unlikely source: far-left anti-gun activist David Hogg.

In New Mexico, Republican state Reps. Stefani Lord and John Block <a href="https://www.foxnews.com/politics/new-mexico-republican-legislators-call-dem-gov-grishams-impeachment-gun-order-rogue?intcmp=tw_fnc">said</a> on Saturday that they were pushing for Grisham to be impeached.
&#8220;I am calling on counsel to begin the impeachment process against Governor Grisham,&#8221; Lord said. &#8220;This is an abhorrent attempt at imposing a radical, progressive agenda on an unwilling populous. Rather than addressing crime at its core, Governor Grisham is restricting the rights of law-abiding gun owners. Even Grisham believes this emergency order won’t prohibit criminals from carrying or using weapons; a basic admission that this will only put New Mexicans in danger as they won’t be able to defend themselves from violent crime.&#8221;

The calls for government oversight come after ChatGPT, a language processing tool that knowledge workers are leveraging to complete tasks such as writing emails and debugging code in a matter of moments, garners worldwide popularity. Rep. <a href="http://dailywire.com/topic/ted-lieu" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Ted Lieu</a> (D-CA) said in an <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2023/01/23/opinion/ted-lieu-ai-chatgpt-congress.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">opinion piece</a> for The New York Times that he is “enthralled” by the advent of artificial intelligence but simultaneously “freaked out” when the technology is “left unchecked and unregulated.”
The lawmaker, who holds a computer science degree from Stanford University, specifically referenced falsified photos and videos known as deepfakes, discrimination against racial minorities, and the radicalization of “foreign terrorists and domestic white supremacists.” Lieu called for a “dedicated agency” to regulate artificial intelligence since technology experts would be equipped to introduce statutes more quickly than legislators. “Congress has been slow to react when it comes to technological issues,” he wrote. “But things are changing.”
Amid worries about the possible dangers of mass-market artificial intelligence, many professionals find that ChatGPT increases their efficiency with mundane tasks. Some 27% of employees at prominent consulting, technology, and financial services companies have already used the system in various capacities, according to a <a href="https://www.fishbowlapp.com/insights/chatgpt-sees-strong-early-adoption-in-the-workplace/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">survey</a> from Fishbowl.
National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan announced Friday that the United States and the European Union signed an <a href="https://www.whitehouse.gov/briefing-room/statements-releases/2023/01/27/statement-by-national-security-advisor-jake-sullivan-on-the-new-u-s-eu-artificial-intelligence-collaboration/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">agreement</a> to “drive responsible advancements” in artificial intelligence to address challenges such as extreme weather and climate, electric grid optimization, and emergency response. The White House previously <a href="https://www.whitehouse.gov/ostp/ai-bill-of-rights/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">unveiled</a> an “AI Bill of Rights” blueprint to combat privacy breaches and discrimination.
“Automated systems have brought about extraordinary benefits, from technology that helps farmers grow food more efficiently and computers that predict storm paths, to algorithms that can identify diseases in patients,” the framework said. “This important progress must not come at the price of civil rights or democratic values, foundational American principles that President Biden has affirmed as a cornerstone of his administration.”
OpenAI, the company which produced ChatGPT, recently <a href="https://openai.com/blog/openai-and-microsoft-extend-partnership/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">announced</a> that Microsoft would pour billions more dollars into the solution in the wake of investments offered for the platform in 2019 and 2021. Researchers have begun examining the tool’s potential on exams considered difficult for even the brightest students: ChatGPT performed “at or near the passing threshold” for all three components of the United States Medical Licensing Exam without “any specialized training or reinforcement,” according to one research <a href="https://www.medrxiv.org/content/10.1101/2022.12.19.22283643v2.full" target="_blank" rel="noopener">paper</a>. The newest <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/latest-twitter-files-reveal-biden-admin-push-against-covid-19-disinformation">release</a> of The Twitter Files came in a Twitter thread from reporter David Zweig.
The federal government reportedly “rigged” the COVID debate, “By censoring info that was true but inconvenient to U.S. govt. policy,” as well as “discrediting doctors and other experts who disagreed,” and “ordinary users,” according to Zweig.
The pressure to suppress certain COVID details while elevating a preferred narrative included officials in both the Trump and Biden administrations.
“Internal files at Twitter that I viewed while on assignment for @thefp showed that both the Trump and Biden administrations directly pressed Twitter executives to moderate the platform’s pandemic content according to their wishes,” Zweig tweeted.
Zweig later offered evidence that the push toward select COVID information was not limited to Twitter.
“It wasn’t just Twitter. The meetings with the Trump White House were also attended by Google, Facebook, Microsoft and others,” he tweeted alongside a screenshot of the companies involved.
The Twitter Files also cited examples of suppression by bots — automated intelligence that flagged certain content — while also outsourcing moderation to workers in faraway locations like the Philippines.
The contracted workers “in places like the Philippines, also moderated content. They were given decision trees to aid in the process, but tasking non experts to adjudicate tweets on complex topics like myocarditis and mask efficacy data was destined for a significant error rate,” Zweig documented.

Hartzler&#8217;s words provided strong support for traditional marriage, urging House members to oppose the legislation to codify same-sex marriage.

The short video quickly turned viral, with more than 1.4 million views less than an hour after its posting.
The House of Representatives <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/dem-controlled-house-passes-same-sex-marriage-bill-39-republicans-support" target="_blank" rel="noopener">passed</a> the legislation on Thursday, 258-169, sending the bill to the president&#8217;s desk where it is expected to be signed into law.
The measure was supported primarily by Democrats, but 39 House Republicans joined in the measure. The bill repeals the Defense of Marriage Act that legally defined marriage as a union between one man and one woman and permitted individual states not to recognize same-sex marriages from other states.
In addition to Lieu&#8217;s demeaning response to Hartzler, he posted his disdain for the majority of Republicans who opposed the Respect for Marriage Act.

The Senate previously passed the legislation — which also codifies federal protections for interracial marriages. The 61-36 vote last week included 12 Republican Senators supporting the measure, offering the supermajority needed to pass the 60-vote filibuster threshold.
The Senate Republicans who backed the bill were Sens. Susan Collins of Maine, Lisa Murkowski of Alaska, Rob Portman of Ohio, Thom Tillis of North Carolina, Mitt Romney of Utah, Roy Blunt of Missouri, Cynthia Lummis of Wyoming, Richard Burr of North Carolina, Shelley Moore Capito of West Virginia, Dan Sullivan of Alaska, Joni Ernst of Iowa, and Todd Young of Indiana.
Prior to the Senate vote, Sen. Mike Lee (R-UT) unsuccessfully attempted to urge fellow Republicans to include protections for anyone with a religious belief or moral conviction that marriage belongs to one man and one woman.
“Instead of subjecting churches, religious nonprofits, and persons of conscience to undue scrutiny or punishment by the federal government because of their views on marriage, we should make explicitly clear that this legislation does not constitute a national policy endorsing a particular view of marriage that threatens the tax-exempt status of faith-based nonprofits,” he wrote. “As we move forward, let us be sure to keep churches, religious charities, and religious universities out of litigation in the first instance,” he said in a <a href="https://www.lee.senate.gov/services/files/7BBDBA04-B17A-4DC1-9BEC-75E733F37A5F" target="_blank" rel="noopener">letter</a> concerning his proposed <a href="https://www.lee.senate.gov/services/files/CB39DE23-EF22-4CDC-B645-BF756A5F94D1" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Lee Amendment</a>.

Both Gorsuch and Kavanaugh stated during their confirmation hearings that they considered Roe — along with its successor, Planned Parenthood v. Casey — to be settled precedent in the eyes of the court. Many took those statements to mean that they would never vote to overturn the two landmark abortion cases — which they did in late June. But stating that those cases were &#8220;precedent&#8221; did not mean that either justice was lying — nor did it necessarily constitute a promise to never overturn said precedent.
The fact that both Roe and Casey were &#8220;precedent&#8221; did not mean that they were necessarily constitutional or that they were not simply bad law, however. <a href="https://www.oyez.org/cases/1850-1900/163us537">Plessy v. Ferguson</a> — which allowed for segregation under the banner of &#8220;separate but equal&#8221; — was also precedent once, until <a href="https://www.history.com/topics/black-history/brown-v-board-of-education-of-topeka">Brown v. Board of Education</a> reversed that. <a href="https://www.uscourts.gov/educational-resources/educational-activities/facts-and-case-summary-korematsu-v-us">Korematsu v. United States</a> — which allowed for the internment of Japanese Americans during World War II — was also considered precedent until it wasn&#8217;t.

Critics blanketed Twitter with complaints and insults upon learning that Fox News had opted not to replace its prime time schedule with a live broadcast of the January 6th Committee hearings.
Instead, Fox announced plans to provide full coverage of the <a href="https://dailywire.com/news/trump-endorses-mccarthy-ahead-of-january-6-hearings/">hearings</a> on Fox Business Network and on its streaming platforms, but that did not stop a whole range of vocal critics — from sitting Congressmen Adam Kinzinger (R-IL) and Ted Lieu (D-CA) to former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton — from bashing the network.
CNN host Brian Stelter fired off a series of tweets announcing the decision and claiming that a failure to air the hearings in their entirety on the <a href="https://dailywire.com/news/brian-stelter-the-reason-americans-think-biden-is-failing-is-because-fox-news-told-them-so/">flagship network</a> revealed &#8220;priorities.&#8221;
&#8220;Fox News makes it official: It will NOT show Thursday&#8217;s 1/6 hearing like all the other major networks. Tucker Carlson&#8217;s show will air as usual. Carlson promotes conspiracy theories about the riot, calls the committee &#8216;illegitimate,&#8217; and ridicules the committee members,&#8221; Stelter claimed, adding, &#8220;Fox&#8217;s top news anchors will be moved over to the Fox Business Network, and they will cover the hearing there. At 8pm ET on an ordinary night, Fox News has more than 3 million viewers, while Fox Business has under 100,000. That pretty much says it all about Fox&#8217;s priorities.&#8221;

Stelter concluded by <a href="https://twitter.com/brianstelter/status/1533963068278972417">conceding</a> that Fox had issued an official statement saying that the main network&#8217;s prime time lineup would, in fact, cover the hearings &#8220;as news warrants&#8221; and preempt &#8220;Gutfeld!&#8221; in favor of a two-hour block of coverage provided by Shannon Bream, Martha MacCallum, and Bret Baier.
But still, the critics lambasted the network:
&#8220;If you work for @FoxNews and want to maintain your credibility as a journalist, now is a good time to speak out, or quit. Enough is enough,&#8221; Kinzinger <a href="https://twitter.com/AdamKinzinger/status/1533984060976025607">tweeted</a>.
&#8220;Fox &#8216;News&#8217; has released a statement confirming it will not be airing the Jan 6th hearings on its network,&#8221; host of the progressive podcast &#8220;America Rises Up&#8221; Andrew Wortman tweeted, claiming without evidence that Fox News anchors had assisted in inciting the riot on Capitol Hill and calling for the network to be stripped of its ability to broadcast. &#8220;Fox anchors not only helped incite the attack, but were in contact with Trump’s Chief of Staff during it. It’s time for this propaganda channel to be taken off the air.&#8221;
Hillary Clinton <a href="https://twitter.com/HillaryClinton/status/1534164781262848000">added</a>, &#8220;Fox News won&#8217;t air the January 6 hearings because they prefer their sedition made fresh on-site.&#8221;
The Lincoln Project suggested that some at Fox News were &#8220;scared&#8221; of what viewers might see if they allowed the hearings to air. &#8220;CBS ABC NBC CNN are all covering the Jan 6 hearings LIVE. @FoxNews is the only major channel that isn&#8217;t. Why won&#8217;t @SeanHannity @TuckerCarlson @IngrahamAngle join the rest? No opinion, no editing, just real time coverage. Because they’re scared of what their viewers will see.&#8221;
Lieu also suggested that fear was what was driving the network, adding, &#8220;Why is prime time @FoxNews scared to show the bipartisan January 6 Committee hearings?&#8221;
But a few people defended the network&#8217;s decision, with some saying that it aligned more with what viewers actually wanted and others arguing that the entire committee was a sham.
Radio host Joe &#8220;Pags&#8221; Pagliarulo cheered the move, <a href="https://twitter.com/JoeTalkShow/status/1534219120711016451">saying</a>, &#8220;Fox News will not air the Jan 6th made-for-tv drama. Good. It&#8217;s not a legitimate committee. The committee was given Rs to fill the seats. They rejected them. Then appointed to Trump-hating alleged Rs. Not okay. It&#8217;s a sham committee and Fox makes the right choice here.&#8221;

California hard-left Democrat Rep. Ted Lieu’s campaign account has been used to contribute more than $15,000 to his wife’s school board campaign committee since the end of 2018.
As Jennifer Van Laar of RedState <a href="https://redstate.com/jenvanlaar/2021/08/18/ted-lieu-spent-15k-in-campaign-contributions-to-get-his-wife-elected-to-the-school-board-n427970">delineated</a> in a series of screenshots, Lieu’s campaign donated $888 on November 26, 2018, $5,000 on January 4, 2019, $2,000 on January 15, 2019, $5,500 on July 3, 2019, and $2,000 on March 31, 2021.
“Three of the contributions are listed as going to Betty Lieu for School Board 2018 and two are listed as going to Betty Lieu for School Board 2019, but the accounts are one and the same. Ted’s treasurer should know this since he’s also Betty’s treasurer,” Van Laar reported.
Lieu’s campaign also sent out emails in 2020 looking for donations for his wife’s school board campaign. They stated:

Betty also happens to have the hardest job in elective politics right now as an elected school board member, trying to open schools safely in the middle of a pandemic. And tomorrow is her birthday.

The <a href="https://ethics.house.gov/sites/ethics.house.gov/files/documents/2008_House_Ethics_Manual.pdf">House Ethics Manual</a> notes:
<blockquote>FECA generally allows Members to donate campaign funds to any entity of the kinds described in § 170(c) of the Internal Revenue Code – including a charitable or educational organization, or a governmental entity – provided that there is no conversion to personal use through the donation. … FECA also allows the transfer of campaign funds ― without limitation to any national, State, or local committee of any political party. Thus if otherwise lawful, campaign funds may be transferred to another candidate, or invested for use in a future political campaign, provided, again, that there is no conversion of funds to personal use.</blockquote>
Lieu <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/watch-democrat-ted-lieu-admits-he-wants-censor-ryan-saavedra">admitted</a> in December 2018 that he wanted to censor free speech, but couldn’t because the First Amendment prevented him from doing so. He stated on CNN, “I would love to be able to regulate the content of speech. The First Amendment prevents me from doing so. And that’s simply a function of the First Amendment. But I think over the long run, it’s better that government does not regulate the content of speech.”
Lieu also has had trouble with American history. In October 2017, he claimed that the 25th Amendment was written by America&#8217;s founders, tweeting, “The Framers designed the 25th Amendment for that hypothetical situation of an unstable, impulsive, unraveling @POTUS. Just sayin’.”

Jenner went on to list bona fides ranging from winning the gold medal at the Olympics to advancing equality for transgender people, adding, “I am a proven winner and the only outsider who can put an end to Gavin Newsom’s disastrous time as governor.”
Jenner highlighted high taxes and the consequences of the state’s “over-restrictive lockdown” as examples of Newsom’s failed leadership.
“This isn’t the California we know. This is Gavin Newsom’s California, where he orders us to stay home but goes out to dinner with his lobbyist friends,” said Jenner, referencing Newsom getting caught dining with friends indoors without masks at The French Laundry, an opulent Napa Valley restaurant that charges <a href="https://www.financialsamurai.com/how-rich-to-dine-at-french-laundry/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">$1,200 per person</a> for a white truffle and caviar dinner.</blockquote>
