President Donald Trump singled out Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) for criticism on Tuesday in a dispute over the &#8220;One Big, Beautiful Bill.&#8221;
The scolding took place on Truth Social shortly after Paul made an appearance on TV in which the senator said he would not support the legislation in its current form because it aims to raise the debt ceiling by several trillion dollars.
&#8220;Rand Paul has very little understanding of the BBB, especially the tremendous GROWTH that is coming. He loves voting &#8216;NO&#8217; on everything, he thinks it’s good politics, but it’s not. On CNBC&#8217;s &#8220;Squawk Box,&#8221; Paul <a href="https://x.com/RandPaul/status/1929908175748088234" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a> the &#8220;main thing&#8221; he objects to in the massive bill, which contains many provisions in line with Trump&#8217;s second-term agenda, is how it would raise the debt ceiling by another $4-5 trillion. As it stands, the national debt is approaching $37 trillion.
&#8220;That&#8217;s an indication that we&#8217;ll borrow that much. It&#8217;s an indication that we&#8217;ll put the debt on the back burner,&#8221; said Paul, who added that he did not join &#8220;most of the Republicans&#8221; who voted to &#8220;continue the Biden spending levels&#8221; with the six-month continuing resolution Congress passed in March.
Paul said he believes there are three or four Republicans in the Senate who might oppose the bill as it stands. That amount could be enough to stall the legislation&#8217;s progress, given the GOP has only a 53-45 <a href="https://www.senate.gov/history/partydiv.htm" target="_blank" rel="noopener">majority</a>.
&#8220;If there are four of us who want it to be more fiscally conservative, I think we can really reduce the spending levels and perhaps separate out the debt ceiling as well,&#8221; Paul said.
The senator also noted that he is &#8220;pretty much open to compromise on everything else in the bill,&#8221; specifically expressing support for how it seeks to retain the 2017 tax cuts.
Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) also defended the legislation from Paul&#8217;s <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/rand-paul-warns-big-beautiful-bill-explode-debt" target="_blank" rel="noopener">critique</a> on the debt ceiling in a recent &#8220;Fox News Sunday&#8221; interview. He alluded to how the reconciliation process Republicans are using allows Congress to bypass the Senate&#8217;s 60-vote filibuster threshold.
&#8220;We have to do it,&#8221; Johnson <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/speaker-johnson-rebuts-rand-pauls-debt-warning-big-beautiful-bill" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a>. &#8220;We&#8217;re not going to get any Democrats to assist on that. So, to get it through the Senate and make sure we don&#8217;t crash the U.S. economy and default on our debts for the first time in history, it has to be part of the reconciliation package.&#8221;

President Donald Trump&#8217;s budget chief delivered on Sunday a counterargument to Elon Musk&#8217;s <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/elon-disappointed-by-one-big-beautiful-bill" target="_blank" rel="noopener">warning</a> that the House-passed version of the &#8220;One Big, Beautiful Bill&#8221; would further expand the federal deficit.
On CNN&#8217;s &#8220;State of the Union,&#8221; anchor Dana Bash showed Russ Vought, the director of the Office of Management and Budget (OMB), a clip of Musk telling &#8220;CBS Sunday Morning&#8221; in a recent <a href="https://x.com/CBSSunday/status/1927535075144421527" target="_blank" rel="noopener">interview</a> of his concern that the legislation will inflate the federal deficit that has already blown past $1 trillion in recent years. Musk also referred to the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) initiative that he oversaw for the past few months.
&#8220;I was like — disappointed to see the massive spending bill, frankly, which increases the budget deficit, not just decrease it. And it undermines the work that the DOGE team is doing,&#8221; Musk said.
&#8220;I love Elon,&#8221; Vought responded. &#8220;This bill doesn&#8217;t increase the deficit or hurt the debt. In fact, it lowers it by $1.4 trillion. What some of the watchdogs have done is, they have used CBO&#8217;s artificial baseline, which doesn&#8217;t allow and assume that current tax law will be extended because of sunsets that are in the law.&#8221;
Vought added later, &#8220;When you assume the extension of the president&#8217;s tax relief from 2017, this budget or this bill, and it&#8217;s really a reconciliation bill — it&#8217;s not really a budget bill. It is using a budget process. This is a $1.4 trillion over 10 years deficit reduction. It&#8217;s $1.6 trillion in mandatory savings. Obviously, we have a little bit of spending in there as well for border and defense. But that is the biggest mandatory savings package that we have seen since 1997. It&#8217;s very historic.&#8221;

The &#8220;One Big, Beautiful Bill,&#8221; which is moving through Congress through the reconciliation process that will allow the Senate to bypass the filibuster threshold, aims to advance Trump’s priorities on border security, energy, and national defense. It also seeks to retain tax cuts from 2017 that are set to expire at the end of this year, raise the debt limit by trillions of dollars, and much more.

Elon Musk says he was &#8220;disappointed&#8221; by the version of President Donald Trump’s &#8220;One Big, Beautiful Bill&#8221; that passed out of the GOP-led House last week.
The critique, in which Musk expressed concerns about the bill inflating the federal deficit that has blown past $1 trillion in recent years, was made during an <a href="https://x.com/CBSSunday/status/1927535075144421527" target="_blank" rel="noopener">interview</a> for &#8220;CBS Sunday Morning&#8221; set to air in full over the weekend as the Republican-controlled Senate considers the legislation.
&#8220;I was like — disappointed to see the massive spending bill, frankly, which increases the budget deficit, not just decrease it. And it undermines the work that the DOGE team is doing,&#8221; Musk said.
At the start of his second term, Trump tasked Musk with overseeing the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) initiative, focused on removing waste, fraud, and abuse from the federal government.

Musk and Trump have been close allies since the 2024 general election cycle. While they have generally been very complementary of each other, Musk did take an <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/elon-musk-takes-apparent-stance-against-trump-tariffs-quotes-famed-economist-on-merits-of-free-trade" target="_blank" rel="noopener">apparent stance</a> against Trump&#8217;s strategy with tariffs. However, that did not create a visible rift.
In a cabinet meeting late last month, Musk <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/elon-salutes-trumps-first-100-days-could-be-the-greatest-ever" target="_blank" rel="noopener">declared</a> that a “tremendous amount” had been accomplished during Trump&#8217;s first 100 days back in office. Trump told Musk, &#8220;You’re invited to stay as long as you want.&#8221; And, in fact, Musk has been seen back in the White House since rededicating himself to Tesla and his other companies.

White House Deputy Chief of Staff Stephen Miller promised the “largest tax cut in history” on Thursday as pressure ramps up on the White House over tariffs.
Miller touted legislation that lawmakers on Capitol Hill are currently negotiating, which is expected to make President Donald Trump’s 2017 tax cuts permanent. The White House official said during a press conference that the proposal would encourage companies to invest in the United States.
“The relief for small businesses is going to come in the form of the largest tax cut in American history – a tax cut, by the way, that every single Democrat is planning to vote against,” Miller <a href="https://x.com/RapidResponse47/status/1917935956310606034" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a>. “They&#8217;re voting for a tax hike for every middle-class family of about $4000.”
“Companies that invest in the United States will be able to deduct 100% of that cost from their tax liability. This will be the most pro-small business tax bill in American history,” he continued. “At the same time, this is what you have to understand about the plan, as they&#8217;re able to do that, as they&#8217;re able to reshore those supply chains, that also means they&#8217;ll pay no tariff. So, you&#8217;ll have the lowest tax environment and there&#8217;ll be no tariff because their production and supply chains will be in the United States.”
On Wednesday, the stock market <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/stock-prices-drop-after-new-data-shows-gdp-shrank-since-start-of-year" target="_blank" rel="noopener">dropped</a> after new data from the Department of Commerce showed that U.S. gross domestic product (GDP), a measure of the economy&#8217;s health, shrank 0.3% in the first quarter of 2025.
The reduction in GDP came as Trump waged trade wars with China, Canada, and Mexico, and levied a flat 10% tariff across dozens of countries, with higher tariffs threatened. The tariffs sparked a surge in imports as companies rushed to get products to the United States before the tariffs took effect. The rise in imports significantly prevented a positive U.S. GDP.
Wells Fargo economist Shannon Grein said that the topline GDP contraction makes the U.S. economy appear weaker than it is.
“The headline decline overstates weakness because a lot of that was tariff-induced pull-forward,” Grein said. “Overall, I think that it was a relatively solid underlying report when it comes to demand.”
The White House has played up the expectation of new trade deals soon to avoid tariffs on dozens of countries. An absence of trade deals in the future could shake investor confidence and push stock prices lower still.

Trump also spoke about various tax cuts he wants out of Congress after he <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/one-big-beautiful-bill-trump-endorses-house-budget-plan-over-the-lindsey-graham-version" target="_blank" rel="noopener">endorsed</a> a House budget reconciliation package that would not leave this aspect of his domestic agenda to be relegated to a future bill like in the Senate GOP plan.
&#8220;We&#8217;re going to dramatically cut taxes for families and for workers and for companies, including no tax on tips, and hopefully no tax on Social Security, and no tax on overtime,&#8221; Trump said of proposals that stem back to his campaign.
Trump went on to discuss &#8220;100% expensing for new factory construction in the United States and anything else that you&#8217;re going to buy with capital&#8221; as well as his aim to &#8220;substantially cut taxes&#8221; for domestic producers of oil and gas.

‘Just Getting Started’: Trump Dishes On DOGE, Life Advice, And Tax Cuts

On Thursday, 9 GOP senators who serve in the Senate Finance Committee issued an open letter to President Trump to express their support for his desire to block the expiring provisions of the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act (TCJA) and their determination not to “support a tax package that only provides temporary relief from tax hikes.”
If the <a href="https://crsreports.congress.gov/product/pdf/R/R47846" target="_blank" rel="noopener">provisions are allowed to expire</a>, marginal rates will return to their permanent TCJA levels of 10%, 15%, 25%, 28%, 33%, 35%, and 39.6%. The TCJA reduced those to 10%, 12%, 22%, 24%, 32%, 35%, and 37%. Under the TCJA, basic standard deduction amounts were nearly doubled. They were adjusted annually for inflation after 2018. The TCJA essentially suspended the personal exemption.
“You were elected with a mandate to do big things,” the letter <a href="https://www.daines.senate.gov/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/Senate-Finance-Letter-to-President-Trump_Tax-Permanency.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">began</a>. “One of those big things is to provide lasting tax relief for small businesses and families across the country. As members of the Senate Finance Committee, we write to express our support for your position that the expiring provisions of the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act must be permanent and not sunset. After passage of your tax cuts in 2017, we had a booming economy with soaring investment, higher wages, increased productivity, and zero corporate inversions. Without action, at the end of this year, taxes will increase for Americans in every income group and nearly six million jobs are at risk.”
“A temporary extension of these pro-growth and pro-families policies is a missed opportunity,&#8221; they declared. “Businesses need certainty while investing in their companies and taxpayers should not fear tax hikes due to Congressional inaction. Congressional Republicans have an historic opportunity to enact this lasting tax relief. Failing to act boldly does a disservice to the American people who entrusted us to deliver in November. Thus, we will not support a tax package that only provides temporary relief from tax hikes.”
“If lawmakers fail to extend these provisions, 62% of filers would see a tax increase,” Faith Jablokow of the Taxpayers Protection Alliance <a href="applewebdata://01E53A68-893C-48FE-939A-5607C37FB243/v">stated</a>. “Additionally, the TCJA fostered a 4.7% increase in corporate investment, a significant achievement. This is due to the TCJA lowering the corporate income tax rate from 35% to 21%. This had the dual effect of making American corporations more competitive globally and allowing them more liquid assets to invest back into the economy.”
GOP Senators Steve Daines (MT), Senate Majority Leader John Thune (SD), Mike Crapo (ID), John Barrasso (WY), James Lankford (OK), Ron Johnson (WI), Roger Marshall (KS), Marsha Blackburn (TN), and Thom Tillis (N.C.) signed the letter.

White House Press Secretary <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/karoline-leavitt" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Karoline Leavitt</a> revealed on Thursday the Trump administration&#8217;s &#8220;tax priorities,&#8221; saying President Donald Trump will work with Congress to pass the largest middle-class tax cut in American history.
Speaking to reporters outside the White House, Leavitt <a href="https://www.c-span.org/program/white-house-event/white-house-press-secretary-speaks-to-reporters/655469" target="_blank" rel="noopener">provided</a> a list of Trump&#8217;s tax cut priorities after the president spoke to Republican lawmakers. The administration&#8217;s priorities include no tax on tips, no tax on seniors&#8217; Social Security, no tax on overtime pay, a renewal of Trump&#8217;s 2017 middle-class tax cuts, an adjustment of the SALT cap, elimination of tax breaks for billionaire sports team owners, closure of the carried interest loophole, and tax cuts for products made in America.
&#8220;This will be the largest tax cut in history for middle-class working Americans,&#8221; Leavitt said. &#8220;The president is committed to working with Congress to get this done.&#8221;
Trump met privately with Republican leaders at the White House on Thursday to hash out a plan for tax cuts and spending, the Associated Press <a href="https://apnews.com/article/trump-tax-cuts-republicans-congress-border-wall-289ebfb82715f920b708e4f768c1a76a" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reported</a>. House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) initially committed to passing tax cuts in the House by the end of April, but as that deadline quickly approaches, lawmakers are debating a short-term solution for tax cuts. Senate Republicans appear to be prioritizing legislation on funding for a wall along the U.S.-Mexico border and other immigration issues before addressing tax cuts later this year, according to the AP.
“We’re stuck in the mud,” Rep. Byron Donald (R-FL) told <a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2025/02/06/trump-tax-cuts-republican-house-senate-split.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">CNBC</a> on Wednesday. “There’s a lot of, what do they call it, paralysis of analysis? And I think at this point, we need to just make a clear decision.”
Rep. Chip Roy (R-TX) <a href="https://www.politico.com/live-updates/2025/02/05/congress/republicans-closely-scrutinizing-cost-of-trump-tax-cut-extensions-00202575" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a>, “We have had conversations, including last night, about, do we do five-year tax policy? Do we do five-year policy for some, permanent/ten-year for others? I think we’re working on that. Those are the levers to pull to try to figure out the math.&#8221;
Hardline conservatives, such as Roy, want the tax cuts to be coupled with plans to go after the national debt or keep a neutral deficit.

In a <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/supply-side-trumponomics-part-one-drill-baby-drill" target="_blank" rel="noopener">previous article</a>, we looked at three policy areas ripe for large “positive supply shocks” and a rapid return of the U.S. economy to a high-growth, low-inflation situation: Energy production, tax cuts, and regulations.
First, Americans could see a significant reduction in energy costs under Trump’s “drill, baby, drill” plan designed to unleash American “energy dominance.” Next, we turn to phase two of Trump’s supply-side suite, the tried-and-true tool of widespread tax reductions.
<h3>Tax Cuts</h3>
To frame our discussion of supply-side tax cuts, let’s briefly review the “determinants of supply” — factors that can shift a product’s supply curve, summarized by the acronym TTEP#: Technology, Taxes, Expectations, Price of resources, # of producers.
The area where government can have a large and sudden impact should be screamingly obvious: taxes.
Yes, taxes are needed to fund essential government services. But economists recognize that taxes are costs. Higher sales taxes raise the cost of goods; higher income taxes raise the cost of earning a living; higher corporate taxes raise the cost of running a business. Obviously, reducing taxes on work and production (business and individual income taxes) will reduce the overall cost of producing goods, stimulating more work and production, and thus shifting supply curves to the right. Donald Trump understands this intuitively, which is why one of his signature agenda items in his first term was a large tax cut, particularly focused on business (corporate) taxation, via the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017 (TCJA). 
Supply-side tax cuts have been tried and found amazingly successful on multiple occasions in U.S. history. Large income tax cuts in the 1920s (Mellon-Coolidge), 1960s (Kennedy-Johnson), 1980s (Reagan), and 2017 (Trump) led to corresponding economic booms and strong growth in personal income, output, and employment. 
The history and impact of these (and more) tax reforms was chronicled by the Godfather of modern supply-side economics, Arthur Laffer, with coauthors Brian Domitrovic and Jeanne Sinquefield, in their recent book, &#8220;<a href="https://www.amazon.com/Taxes-Have-Consequences-Income-History/dp/1637585640/ref=sr_1_1?crid=1XSDHO3Q0YH3P&amp;dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.xu1XlM3jlOoD2hFrXGGZsA3AvTa81rKTZSeSwxTAc78SSYDcfj6Ce9LxRj8n7EbZDZ_ctwl3a4LOsayoPTsZz-DDK0xfkzSC-gVSLI6bJjYu1MUbZ0XSB1n3bXWIWKhn_L8hfc5x8rVboLmw2No0q89DoNqtN6Guk8NYmD5QJxdqDC6kGJmZkp-4oXjSEI-97PCv-bx--zTm5Ou3-ohksxmSaAzss6XInp315Q90hHQ.5ulo-v-Uewzzer1g7Nl3TGRiiyUVgo-iZVpy8pKxGJw&amp;dib_tag=se&amp;keywords=taxes+have+consequences&amp;qid=1731166728&amp;sprefix=taxes+have+conseq%2Caps%2C1723&amp;sr=8-1" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Taxes Have Consequences</a>.&#8221; As I noted <a href="https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s11138-023-00613-3" target="_blank" rel="noopener">elsewhere</a>, the authors document no less than five distinct episodes of significant tax cutting, from Mellon’s aggressive 1920s rate cuts, to the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, which Art Laffer himself promoted as an advisor to the Trump Administration. Each tax cut generated an economic boom with above-trend GDP growth and (eventual) increases in federal income tax revenue. &#8220;Taxes Have Consequences&#8221; is a fact-based, unassailable chronicle of the power of tax rate reductions and tax code simplifications to supercharge economic growth. 
Trump’s tax agenda for 2025 has two big parts and several smaller ones. The TCJA cuts are scheduled to sunset at the end of 2025, so the priority will be making them permanent. The other big tax change Trump proposed on the campaign trail is a further significant reduction of the corporate income tax, from 21% down to a world-beating 15%, contingent on corporations promising to onshore production. Other measures of note include allowing 100% deduction of most business investment spending, and eliminating taxes on tips and Social Security benefits. 
Skeptics and doubters will, of course, bristle at further tax cuts. Leftists will whine about “tax cuts for the rich” and pooh-pooh their favorite bogeyman of “trickle down economics.” Even some wimpy conservatives will argue that most of the tax cut juice was already squeezed out in Trump’s first-term reforms, and that further tax cuts risk significant increases in the federal deficit and debt. Trump knows from experience, however, that tax cuts are still a powerful tool. After all, the top income tax rate right now is still 37%; Reagan’s reforms got us down to a top rate of just 28% by 1988, so there’s still room to cut. 
As a world-class businessman, Trump knows that pushing that corporate rate down even lower can turbocharge business formation and capital spending, the underlying factors driving growth in productivity, jobs, and wages. When Trump first entered office in 2017, the U.S. corporate income tax was among the highest in the world at 31%. Even with the TCJA reduction to 21%, the U.S. still taxes corporate profits at a higher rate than most European countries. There’s much more room to trim these taxes and improve America’s business climate.

As for the revenue &amp; deficit impact: as Art Laffer <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FCk2-QVqCck&amp;pp=ygUQdGhlIGxhZmZlciBjdXJ2ZQ%3D%3D" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reminds us</a>, tax cuts have the potential to boost government revenue, as the “incentive to work/ earn more” effect can swamp the “government gets a smaller slice of my paycheck” effect. 
Trump has also made statements about possibly <a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2024/10/26/trump-joe-rogan-election-tariffs-income-tax-replace.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">offsetting income tax revenues</a> with new tariffs, which is causing heartburn for some hardcore free-trade, libertarian economists. While I’m not a big fan of “protectionist” tariffs, I think it’s smart to view Trump’s threat of tariffs as both a hardball negotiating tactic and part of a bigger vision of pro-growth tax reform. Indeed, Trump has even made <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2024/10/24/us/politics/donald-trump-tax-policy.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">recent statements</a> about eliminating the income tax altogether and replacing it with a pre-1913-style revenue tariff. Any free market economist worth his salt should see such a move as the biggest positive supply shock in world history. Income taxes are one of the most costly and economically distorting ways to raise revenue. Leftists pushing high tax rates have been open about using the income tax regime mainly as a <a href="https://youtu.be/gJimLZRC9N8?si=hshc1uPf457qzUUC">tool of social engineering and redistribution</a>, efficiency and incentives be damned. Reductions in compliance costs alone would justify swapping the income tax for tariffs. 
This kind of radical reform is far off, but Trump’s overall instincts are good here. Keep trimming away at taxes on the work and investment incomes of Americans, and reap the benefits of boosting incentives for production and capital formation. He did it before with 2017’s TCJA, and through a renewed focus on strategic tax cuts, he make America’s economy boom again.

Former President Donald Trump announced in Detroit on Thursday that if he wins the election, he will make car loan interest &#8220;fully&#8221; tax-deductible, adding the policy to his plans for other major <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/trump-unveils-plan-to-end-all-taxes-on-overtime-work" target="_blank" rel="noopener">tax cuts</a>.
During a speech at the Detroit Economic Club, Trump said the tax deduction on car payments would &#8220;revolutionize&#8221; the car industry and “stimulate massive domestic auto production.&#8221; The former president added that the policy would &#8220;make car ownership dramatically more affordable for millions and millions of working American families.&#8221;

In his speech, Trump also reiterated his promise to impose tariffs on car companies that manufacture vehicles outside of the U.S., a policy he says would bring jobs back to places like Detroit and Flint, Michigan.
“I want German car companies to become American car companies. I want them to build plants in America. Otherwise, I’d rather not have their cars here,” Trump said.
At another point of his speech, Trump warned that if Vice President Kamala Harris wins the election, the U.S. &#8220;will end up being like Detroit.&#8221;
&#8220;I don&#8217;t think anything that we&#8217;re talking about today is high on her list,&#8221; Trump said. &#8220;The whole country is going to be like, you want to know the truth? It&#8217;ll be like Detroit. Our whole country will end up being like Detroit if she&#8217;s your president. You&#8217;re going to have a mess on your hands.&#8221;

In his multiple campaign stops in Michigan, an important battleground state in the 2024 election, the former president has focused on the car industry. While speaking to Michigan voters last month, Trump <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/trump-only-consequential-presidents-get-shot-at" target="_blank" rel="noopener">promised</a> that his administration would put a 200% tariff on vehicles manufactured outside of the U.S.
“They think they’re going to make their cars there and they’re going to sell them across our line and we’re going to take them and we’re not going to charge them tax. We’re going to charge them. I’m telling you right now, we’re putting a 200% tariff on them, which means they’re unsellable,” he said.
Jobs in Michigan&#8217;s auto plants, car parts factories, and corporate offices of major car companies have dropped by 35% since 1990, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, CNN <a href="https://www.cnn.com/2024/02/27/business/auto-jobs-michigan-economy-primary/index.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reported</a> earlier this year. Those job losses in Michigan are due, in part, to the automation of factories, but also due to companies moving their manufacturing bases to Mexico.

Vice President Kamala Harris&#8217; &#8220;no tax on tips&#8221; pitch that she unrolled in Las Vegas one month after former President Donald Trump made the same proposal &#8220;blindsided&#8221; Democrats, some of whom had called Trump&#8217;s idea &#8220;bogus&#8221; and an &#8220;election-year ploy,&#8221; The Hill <a href="https://thehill.com/homenews/senate/4826612-harris-endorses-proposal-tax-tips/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reported</a> on Wednesday.
Harris told her supporters last weekend, “It is my promise to everyone here, when I am president we will continue our fight for working families of America, including to raise the minimum wage and eliminate taxes on tips for service and hospitality workers.” Trump proposed ending taxes on tips for service workers at his Las Vegas rally on June 9.
After Trump made the proposal, Democrats such as Senate Finance Committee Chair Ron Wyden (D-OR), Senate Finance Committee member Debbie Stabenow (D-MI), and senior member of the House Ways and Means Committee Rep. Lloyd Doggett (D-TX) blasted the Republican nominee. Wyden labeled Trump&#8217;s plan a &#8220;bogus proposal&#8221; while Wyden called it an &#8220;election-year ploy.&#8221; Just a few weeks later, their own party&#8217;s nominee made the same promise.
Some on the Left have also expressed concern that such a policy would give employers a reason to forgo raising hourly wages and result in businesses pushing even harder to solicit tips from customers.
“It’s not something I saw coming. I did not expect her to go on the tipped-wage thing. I did not see it as a serious proposal from Trump, and it doesn’t become a serious proposal now,&#8221; a senior Senate Democratic aide told The Hill.

Steven Rosenthal, a senior fellow at the Tax Policy Center, said, &#8220;Trump proposed no tax on tips in June, and largely the Left has been beating up on that proposal. So for Harris to offer a largely identical [proposal], I think catches people short.&#8221;
“I try to call the balls and strikes straight. To me, both the Trump and Harris ‘no tax on tips’ are very poor ideas,” he added.
White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said on Monday that President Joe Biden also supports eliminating taxes on tips for service workers.
“This is something the president supports. He supports eliminating taxes on tips for service and hospitality workers while also raising the minimum wage and preventing the wealthy from gaming the system,” Jean-Pierre <a href="https://www.whitehouse.gov/briefing-room/press-briefings/2024/08/12/press-briefing-by-press-secretary-karine-jean-pierre-67/">said</a>.
The White House press secretary was asked if Harris had stolen the idea from Trump and replied, “I’m not going to respond to a presidential candidate, and I think their campaigns speak to that directly. What I can say is this president, this vice president, have always had the backs of working people, always. And you see that in the policies that they have put forward.”

&#8220;So this is the first time I&#8217;ve said this, and for those hotel workers and people that get tips, you&#8217;re going to be very happy because when I get to office, we are going to not charge taxes on tips, on people making tips,&#8221; Trump said. &#8220;We&#8217;re not going to do it, and we&#8217;re going to do that right away, first thing in office because it&#8217;s been a point of contention for years and years and years — and you do a great job of service, you take care of people.&#8221;
&#8220;And I think it&#8217;s going to be something that is deserved — more importantly — popular or unpopular, I do some unpopular things too, if it&#8217;s right for the country, I do what&#8217;s right,&#8221; Trump continued. &#8220;But — so those people that have jobs in restaurants or whatever the job may be, a tipping job, we&#8217;re not going after it for taxes any more, that will be ended.&#8221;
