As CBS News undergoes major changes this week, with dozens of staffers getting laid off and new leadership taking over, the news outlet&#8217;s &#8220;Race and Culture&#8221; team was also &#8220;gutted,&#8221; <a href="https://x.com/jeremymbarr/status/1983594090521620561">according</a> to The Guardian&#8217;s Jeremy Barr.
Barr reported that a CBS News staffer described the cuts as a &#8220;blood bath,&#8221; adding, &#8220;I’ve also heard that the Race and Culture unit was &#8216;gutted.'&#8221;
The &#8220;Race and Culture&#8221; unit was the subject of criticism last year after &#8220;CBS Mornings&#8221; anchor Tony Dokoupil was reprimanded by the team for going off script and asking tough questions during an interview with leftist activist Ta-Nehisi Coates.
During the <a href="https://x.com/CBSMornings/status/1840749848703770679">interview</a> in September 2024, Dokoupil pressed Coates on radical aspects of his book &#8220;The Message,&#8221; which condemns Israel as a racist country and evil occupier. Dokoupil asked Coates why his book left out &#8220;that Israel is surrounded by countries that want to eliminate it.&#8221;
&#8220;Why leave out that Israel deals with terror groups that want to eliminate it?” Dokoupil asked. Despite the &#8220;CBS Mornings&#8221; anchor&#8217;s tough questions, the interview remained respectful as Coates responded to Dokoupil&#8217;s inquiries. CBS News&#8217; &#8220;Race and Culture&#8221; unit, however, reprimanded Dokoupil for his &#8220;tone,&#8221; The Daily Wire previously <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/cbs-vetted-questions-for-ta-nehisi-coates-anchor-went-off-script">reported</a>.

The &#8220;Race and Culture&#8221; unit &#8220;works with the executive producers of all platforms across the division to ensure the reporting has the proper context, tone and intention,&#8221; <a href="https://www.cbsnews.com/team/alvin-patrick/">according</a> to CBS News. The team is led by long-time news, sports, and entertainment producer Alvin Patrick. Patrick and the &#8220;Race and Culture&#8221; team have worked on numerous race-centered segments at CBS News.
CBS News is also revamping its Saturday morning show, which has been on the air for 28 years, The New York Post <a href="https://nypost.com/2025/10/29/media/cbs-saturday-morning-canceled-michelle-miller-dana-jacobson-are-out-sources/">reported</a>. The show&#8217;s anchors, Michelle Miller and Dana Jacobson, along with executive producer Brian Applegate, have all reportedly been told they are being let go. CBS News staffers were caught in the middle of mass layoffs at their parent company, Paramount Skydance. This week, Paramount Skydance informed around 1,000 employees, including roughly 100 CBS News staffers, that they were being laid off, according to <a href="https://deadline.com/2025/10/cbs-news-layoffs-saturday-morning-show-overhaul-paramount-1236601248/#:~:text=layoffs%20are%20impacting%20close%20to%20100%20CBS,job%20cuts%20is%20expected%20in%20the%20coming" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Deadline</a>.
Earlier this month, CBS News also named Bari Weiss as its editor-in-chief. Weiss, a former New York Times opinion writer, was applauded by many on the Right when she resigned from the Times in 2020 and blasted the newspaper&#8217;s “illiberal environment” in her resignation letter. The cuts at CBS News were already in the works before Weiss was brought on as editor-in-chief.
CBS News&#8217; parent company, Paramount, merged with David Ellison&#8217;s Skydance Media earlier this year. With the merger, Ellison became the CEO of CBS News. Ellison, along with his father, Oracle CEO Larry Ellison, has been praised by President Donald Trump.
&#8220;They’re friends of mine. They’re big supporters of mine,” Trump <a href="https://www.cnn.com/2025/10/23/media/ellison-wbd-trump-warner-bros-discovery-bid">said</a> earlier this month.
“They will make the right decisions,” Trump said. “They’re going to revitalize CBS — hopefully, they’ll bring it back to its former glory.”

Since the assassination of Charlie Kirk, I have been discussing the idea that the Left has created permission structures for violence.
Their argument goes like this. If you make a point that they disagree with, that is a denial of their identity. It is an act of implicit violence. And that act of implicit violence is to be met with actual violence.
Thus, you will see Democrats using language like “fascist!” with regard to Republicans on a routine basis. You&#8217;ll see Democrats claiming day in and day out that there are brutal attacks on black people in the country, attacks that can only presumably be met with force, and then openly praising people who have used terrorism in the past.
It&#8217;s these sorts of arguments that create the permission structures for violence.
And those permission structures find their apex at The New York Times. As a newspaper, The New York is perhaps the chief purveyor of this permission structure. It has spent virtually every day since the assassination of Charlie Kirk — with the exception of Ezra Klein’s work — pushing that permission structure for violence.  
Right after Charlie died, they had not one, but two separate pieces concerning Hasan Piker, the Twitch streamer who is more than warm to terrorist violence. They had one piece that was an obit for Charlie by Hasan Piker, basically blaming capitalism for Charlie&#8217;s death. And then they had a profile of Piker, as though he were some sort of great exemplar of moral debate, anti-violence debate, which is insane. He has endorsed the use of violence over and over.
But over the weekend, they truly outdid themselves. The New York Times decided that there had been too much tolerance for opposing views in The New York Times. That had to stop.
And so they called forth the Halley&#8217;s Comet of stupidity. They appear upon the horizon once every few years. They emerge from their cozy sinecures, being overpaid to do virtually nothing by The New York Times and other elite publications.
So they trotted out Ta-Nehisi Coates and Nikole Hannah-Jones, who is back from the intellectual dead. She hasn&#8217;t written anything for years, but she&#8217;s still on The New York Times’ payroll.

Ta-Nehisi Coates chided the Times’ Ezra Klein for the great sin of being upset over Charlie&#8217;s death. Ta-Nehisi Coates, who just wrote a book calling Israel an apartheid state, likening Israel to the Jim Crow South, not mentioning Palestinian terrorism once; Ta-Nehisi Coates, the same person who has over and over and over again made light of terrorism, including 9/11, was the perfect person for The New York Times to bring in as a voice of morality.
What was he upset about? He was upset that Ezra Klein had written a <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2025/09/28/opinion/ezra-klein-podcast-ta-nehisi-coates.html">couple of columns</a> in which he treated Charlie Kirk as a good example of people trying to debate issues.
“I worry we are already in a cycle of political violence, of mimetic violence. I think about Pelosi. I think about Shapiro. I think about the near assassination of Trump,” Klein stated.
“After that happened, I thought about me. I thought about you. I thought about all kinds of people I know. So I do think there&#8217;s something about when violence takes hold, there&#8217;s something about it that begins to breach our lines. That&#8217;s part of my reaction too,” he said.
Coates replied, “I think all of that is understandable. But was silence not an option?&#8221;
But was silence not an option? You&#8217;re supposed to stay silent when a major political commentator on the other side of the aisle is shot to death while debating issues?
Yes, according to Coates, because Charlie thought the wrong things. 
Coates then turned to his usual routine about how America is a deeply evil and racist place. And then he mischaracterized Charlie&#8217;s positions over and over and over again, calling Charlie a racist, lying about what Charlie had to say, and suggesting that Charlie made the debate worse. 
Of course, Coates himself didn&#8217;t make the debate worse by suggesting over and over and over that America was deeply racist, unfixable, terrible, so terrible he had to run out of the country while simultaneously writing comic books for DC comics.
No, it was Charlie who was really the problem.
But that wasn&#8217;t all. On the same day that happened, The New York Times printed an essay by Nikole Hannah-Jones.
She&#8217;s a person who, when she was criticized for her historical inaccuracies in her awful 1619 Project — which was a gigantic propaganda attempt by The New York Times to recast all of American history as the outgrowth of slavery — when she was criticized by actual historians, people who were not even from the Right, such as Gordon Wood or Sean Wilentz, she came out and basically said, “Well, they&#8217;re all white, aren&#8217;t they?”
People said that the riots that happened in 2020 could be called the 1619 riots. And she cheered that; she thought it was good.
Her essay about Charlie was egregiously terrible. She wrote:
<blockquote>The day Charlie Kirk was killed, Dominic Durant’s 11-year-old daughter came home from her middle school in Tulsa, Okla., and told her father that her friends had been very upset about his death, and that they felt she should be upset, too. “I’m sad,” she said, tears in her eyes.
Durant struggled with how to respond. He, too, had been appalled by the act of violence. But his young daughter did not know much about Kirk, and he worried she would look him up on YouTube and come across the many ugly assertions the right-wing activist had made about Black Americans like them. For instance, Kirk had claimed that four prominent and successful Black women, who all went to Ivy League universities — Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson, the former first lady Michelle Obama, the TV host Joy-Ann Reid and former Representative Sheila Jackson Lee of Texas — did not “have the brain processing power to otherwise be taken really seriously” and had to “go steal a white person’s slot.” He’d argued that “Black America is poorer, more murderous, more dangerous” than when Black people were living under Jim Crow.
Durant did not want his daughter thinking that because her friends were grieving him that the things Kirk had claimed were acceptable or right.
It was a difficult and heart-rending conversation, grappling with how his daughter’s classmates could admire a man who’d said such hurtful things. “I said it’s natural to be sad and I don’t want to change your opinion about being sad,” Durant recounted to me. “But I am explaining to you that the gentleman who just got shot was under the impression that you, as a young Black woman, don’t have the brain processing power. So I am explaining it to you to let you know what he said was wrong and not true.”</blockquote>
Charlie never said that. What Charlie said is that if you are an affirmative action admittee, the tacit admission there is that you couldn&#8217;t make it without affirmative action points. And then he pointed out that Ketanji Brown Jackson was put in place because of affirmative action, and has not exactly performed well on the Supreme Court.
But he never said anything such as “all black women don&#8217;t have brain processing.” That&#8217;s ridiculous. Charlie would never say that.
The entire piece by Nikole Hannah-Jones is a complete mischaracterization of Charlie&#8217;s positions in order to minimize the tragedy of his death.
<blockquote>As a Christian, Durant also felt he had to address Kirk’s version of Christianity, which condemned and disparaged people who are gay and transgender. Kirk once posted, “The pride and trans movements have always been about grooming kids.” </blockquote>
If you read the entire tweet, here is what the actual tweet says.
<blockquote>“Trans actor Elliot Page, formerly known as Ellen explains that queer stuff is no longer niche because 30% of young people are now LGBTQ. The pride and trans movement have always been about grooming kids. They call it normalizing. They cannot procreate, so they recruit and now they&#8217;re bragging about it.” </blockquote>
What Charlie meant was that there is a social contagion with regard to things like trans. That is statistically true.
<blockquote>This intolerance was not reflective of Durant’s own understanding of Jesus or the Gospel, nor the faith his family practiced. “I reminded her not to be a hypocritical Christian,” he said. ”I told her, You know, the Good Book, the Bible, says you judge a man as he lived, not as he died.”</blockquote>
Put aside the fact that the anti-Biblical explanation of sexuality that is put forth by the Left truly does not accord with the words of either the Old Testament or the New Testament. This entire piece is designed to mischaracterize Charlie&#8217;s beliefs in order to suggest that the laments for Charlie are undeserved. That is the entire idea.
She essentially tries to call Charlie a white supremacist. She quotes another left-wing activist who stated that Charlie Kirk’s rhetoric of “Christian white nationalism, anti-transgender, quote anti-woke culture-war framing, this isn’t on the edge anymore. It has moved into what many consider the center of Republican identity.”

This is what The New York Times is pushing: that Charlie and all conservatives are a threat, an open and evil threat, and so laments for their deaths are misguided.
“Can&#8217;t you just remain silent?” in the words of Ta-Nehisi Coates. And according to Nikole Hannah-Jones, do they really deserve the kind of sadness that people are pouring out upon them?
The New York Times, as always, remains a repository of crap.

There is a worldview that has now become prevalent in the United States and across the West. It is actually, truly evil. It has consequences for our politics and for the election of 2024.
There is a clip that is now going around the internet of Ta-Nehisi Coates, a racial conflagrationist author who believes truly terrible things. He&#8217;s been given pretty much every award that our self-defeating, white liberals have to offer.
Over the course of his career, he has received a wide variety of awards. He was given, for example, a MacArthur Fellowship from the MacArthur Foundation. He won a George Polk Award in 2014 for commentary. He was given a 2015 National Book Award for nonfiction. He is the toast of the town. Coates is treated as though he is a moral paragon, a sort of prophet of our times.
He is treated this way by the entire media, so much so that if he is asked a difficult question, all of CBS News melts down — which is what happened last week. A reporter asked him a tough question, and that reporter then took it directly in the teeth from the CBS News brass.
But what Coates believes is actually evil, and it is emblematic of a broader worldview that has now infused large swaths of the upper elite of the Democratic Party who believe exactly what Coates believes. Huge swaths of the Left in Europe believe what Coates believes. This is a person who&#8217;s considered perhaps the leading intellectual light of the Left in the United States. His new book, “The Message” is basically just a rabid screed about how evil Israel is. Prior to that, he used the same exact worldview to discuss how evil the United States is.
But the thing that is setting people&#8217;s hair on fire is what <a href="https://x.com/NickFondacaro/status/1844499893442007450?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1844499893442007450%7Ctwgr%5Eec21caa0f330e84180018db8dbabc0fc7dab5317%7Ctwcon%5Es1_&amp;ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.dailywire.com%2Fnews%2Fta-nehisi-coates-blasted-for-suggesting-he-wouldve-participated-in-october-7-attack" target="_blank" rel="noopener">he said in an interview</a> with former (alleged) comedian Trevor Noah. In it, he justifies the October 7 attacks saying that, were he Palestinian, he himself might have entered Israel and slaughtered men, women, children, and engaged in rape.
In the interview, he says:
<blockquote>I haven&#8217;t said this out loud, but I think about it a lot. Were I 20 years old, born into Gaza, which is a giant open-air jail, and what I mean by that is if my father is a fisherman and he goes too far out into the sea, he might be shot by somebody off, you know, a side of Israeli boats. If my mother picks the olive trees and she gets too close to the wall, she might be shot.
If my little sister has cancer and she needs treatment because they’re no, you know, facilities to do that in Gaza and I don&#8217;t get the right permits, she might die. And I grow up under that oppression and that poverty and the wall comes down, am I also strong enough or even constructed in such a way where I say, “This is too far.” I don’t know that I am.</blockquote>
First of all, put aside the lies, put aside the idea that Israel is somehow keeping cancer-ridden children in Gaza for no reason. There are several dozen hospitals in Gaza, most of them having been used as fronts by Hamas. Billions of dollars flowed into the Gaza Strip, and they are used entirely by Hamas in order to build up terror facilities.
But it is also true that many of the people who were slaughtered in the Gaza envelope by Hamas were people who made it their daily business to drive people with cancer from Gaza to Israeli hospitals. In fact, Yahya Sinwar, the leader of Hamas, was in jail and the Israelis treated him for brain cancer, healed him, and then released him.
When Coates talks about people being shot for picking olive trees, what he describes is not the case. If you get too close to the “No Man&#8217;s Land” in the border area and you refuse to obey orders, you are then taking the risk into your own hands.
All that aside, what he is saying is simply insane. He is justifying the massacres of October 7 because they are the “victims.”

So Coates spends a lot of time justifying the unjustifiable. To understand why this matters for America, it must be understood that this is not about Israel. For Coates, it&#8217;s about something far deeper. When he&#8217;s justifying terrorism, what he&#8217;s really doing is saying that if you are a member of a victim class — a class that he, as a self-appointed prophet, gets to define — you have the right, perhaps even the obligation, to engage in full-scale violence and terrorism.
What Coates says about Gazan civilians crossing the border and engaging in rape, murder, and the slaughter of children could very easily be applied to the slaughter of white Americans under his own worldview and rubric. He&#8217;s been very clear about this. He&#8217;s not exactly hiding the ball. And this is the amazing thing: There&#8217;s nothing new here.
Jean-Paul Sartre, who&#8217;s a ridiculous communist French philosopher who has been taken seriously by liberals for half a century, wrote the exact same thing in his introduction to a book called “The Wretched of the Earth” by Frantz Fanon. In it, he suggests that the West should essentially accept violence upon itself from Third World peoples in order to expiate its own sins of colonialism.
That is also what Coates believes. If you&#8217;re a member of the victim class, you should be able to do violence to people who are members of the “victimizer class.” And anybody who&#8217;s a member of a “victim class,” according to Coates, has no agency. Thus, Coates believes if you&#8217;re a member of a victimizer class, you deserve violence to be done to you and your children.
This is part of a broader worldview that applies to the United States. This worldview has been taken into the bones of the Left. This used to be a fringe, crazy-town worldview. Jean-Paul Sartre was not representative of the party of, say, Hubert Humphrey in the United States in 1968.
But Coates is a lauded, celebrated, champagne-drenched intellectual in the pages of The Atlantic. He is treated as though he has something important to say.
But what he is saying about Israel is really not about Israel at all. Right in the middle of the racial reckoning, Coates published “Between the World and Me,” because after all, Ferguson happened in 2014 and this is his worldview. His big example of experiencing racism in the United States is one time he was on an elevator and someone said something to his child. And this becomes his telescoping of all of America&#8217;s racist history into an incident on an elevator in New York.
The whole book is written as a letter to his child. He writes:
<blockquote>As we came off, you were moving at the dawdling speed of a small child. As we came off, you were moving at the dawdling speed of a small child. A white woman pushed you and said, “Come on.” Many things now happen at once. There is the reaction of any parent when a stranger lays a hand on the body of his or her child. And there was my own insecurity in my ability to protect your black body and more. There was my sense that this woman was pulling rank.
I know, for instance, that she would not have pushed a black child out on my part of Flatbush because she would be afraid there and would sense, if not know, that there would be a penalty for it for such an action. But I was not out on my part of Flatbush and that was not in West Baltimore, and I was far from the Mecca.
I forgot all of that. I was only aware that someone had invoked their right over the body of my son. I turned and spoke to this woman and my words were hot with all of the moment and all of my history. </blockquote>
This is the incident that is the supposed “inciting incident” for his realization about race in America. He&#8217;s on an elevator with his child and a white woman is irritated because the kid isn&#8217;t moving fast enough — in New York, a place of the rude. He immediately telescopes all of America&#8217;s terrible, evil, racial history into this incident. It never occurs to him that maybe the lady&#8217;s just rude. It never occurs to him that maybe she&#8217;s in a hurry because she has a reason to be in a hurry.
No, it&#8217;s “all of America is racist and evil,” and you can find that out by looking into the eyes of another person and never asking them a question. Because Coates, an incredibly rich and celebrated author, is a victim, and that white lady in the elevator was a victimizer — a racial victimizer, not just a victimizer of the child by being rude, in a class sense. She&#8217;s a member of a victimizer class.
So what does that mean for Coates? It means, for example, that he doesn&#8217;t care about September 11. He actually writes this in his book. It is beyond comprehension that this country would grant the worldview of people like Coates any time of day at all, let alone make this person a celebrated author.
He&#8217;s an immoral imbecile, though that&#8217;s too kind because imbecility suggests that stupidity lies at the root of this. It&#8217;s not imbecility. It is malign evil.
In his book “Between the World and Me,” Coates writes about September 11, and the firefighters and police officers who were turned to ash:
<blockquote>They were not human to me, black, white or whatever. They were menaces of nature. They were the fire, the comet, the storm, which could, with no justification, shatter my body.</blockquote>
Now, throughout his writing he uses the term “body” because he believes, I assume, that if he writes “body” as opposed to “me,” it makes it have more import, and becomes all about the physical being of black people or something. In reality, it&#8217;s just a cheap way of trying to buy literary cred.
In an interview with <a href="https://nymag.com/intelligencer/2015/07/ta-nehisi-coates-between-the-world-and-me.html">New York Magazine</a> that same year, the death of one particular black person at the hands of police so alienated Coates that when he watched 9/11, “slightly stoned, on the roof of his Brooklyn building,” he recalls that he felt nothing at all. “You must always remember,” Coates writes to Samori, “that the sociology, the history, the economics, the graphs, the charts, the regressions all land, with great violence, upon the body.” This is the setting up of a victim class that is then justified in doing anything he feels nothing about — September 11 or otherwise.
Let me just express, if someone feels nothing about September 11, they should not be in the United States. It is that simple. They do not belong in the West. If you feel nothing about September 11 — the greatest act of evil of my lifetime — you don&#8217;t deserve to be here. You don&#8217;t deserve to be living off the fruits of the civilization that you are currently leeching off of, which is what Coates is doing. He is a scavenger and a leech on the body of Western Civilization.

Woke activist author <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/ta-nehisi-coates" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Ta-Nehisi Coates</a> faced significant backlash late this week for suggesting during a podcast that he might not have been able to stop himself from participating in the mass slaughter of Jews on October 7.
The pseudo-intellectual made the remarks during an interview with far-left entertainer Trevor Noah, who <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/trevor-noah-compares-islamic-terror-against-israel-to-american-revolution" target="_blank" rel="noopener">compared</a> during the same interview Islamic terrorists to America&#8217;s Founding Fathers.
During the podcast, in which Coates made <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/ta-nehisi-coates-suggests-he-would-have-participated-in-an-october-7-style-attack-on-israel" target="_blank" rel="noopener">numerous false claims</a>, he said that he thinks &#8220;a lot&#8221; about whether he would be &#8220;strong enough&#8221; to resist the urge to participate in the October 7 massacre, in which 1,200 people were brutally murdered, if he had been born in Gaza.
&#8220;Am I also strong enough or even constructed in such a way where I say this is too far?&#8221; he asked. &#8220;I don’t know that I am.&#8221;
Thousands of people expressed shock at Coates&#8217; extremist remarks as clips of the remarks were viewed tens of millions of times across social media.

Woke activist author Ta-Nehisi Coates suggested Wednesday that he would not have been above participating in Hamas&#8217; October 7 attack on Israel had he been born and raised in Gaza.
Speaking on Trevor Noah&#8217;s “What Now?” podcast, Coates said he didn&#8217;t know if he was &#8220;strong enough or even constructed in such a way&#8221; to say that the attacks of October 7 were &#8220;too far.&#8221;
&#8220;I haven&#8217;t said this out loud, but I think about it a lot,&#8221; Coates said.&#8221; Were I 20 years old, born into Gaza, which is a giant open-air jail&#8230;if my mother picks the olive trees and she gets too close to the wall, she might be shot&#8230;and I grow up under that oppression and that poverty and the wall comes down. None of what Coates describes about life in Gaza is accurate. <a href="https://www.unocha.org/publications/map/occupied-palestinian-territory/gaza-strip-hospital-capacities-oct-17th-2023" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Thirty-six hospitals were operating</a><a href="https://www.unocha.org/publications/map/occupied-palestinian-territory/gaza-strip-hospital-capacities-oct-17th-2023" target="_blank" rel="noopener"> in Gaza</a> prior to the October 7 attacks on Israel, which killed more than 1,200 and wounded more than 5,000 more. Palestinians didn’t need a permit to go to these hospitals, as they were controlled by authorities in Gaza, most of whom were members of Hamas, the terrorist group that has held power in Gaza since 2006. In addition, the international community — including doctors in Israel – sent <a href="https://www.reuters.com/investigates/special-report/israel-palestinians-gaza-health/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">billions of dollars</a> to these hospitals.
There’s also no evidence that a fisherman or an olive picker would be shot simply for getting too close to the border, and Coates’ claim that Gaza is essentially an “open-air jail” is false on its face. Were Gaza truly a prison, it would be impossible for Hamas to build underground tunnels and place rocket launchers throughout the area, as the have done for years.
Coates also said during the podcast that wanting to attack alleged oppressors was “not unique to Palestine” and compared it to slavery in the United States.
&#8220;The example I think about all the time is like Nat Turner, right? Like Nat Turner launches his rebellion in 1830. This man slaughters babies in their cribs. You know what I mean? Like, and I&#8217;ve done this thought experience experiment for myself over and over. Left-wing entertainer Trevor Noah this week compared Islamic terror attacks against Israel to America&#8217;s Founding Fathers fighting the British during the American Revolutionary War.
Noah made the remarks during an interview with far-Left activist Ta-Nehisi Coates about a new book that he wrote that is filled with <a href="https://x.com/Aizenberg55/status/1844369065017557207">false claims</a> about Israel.
The book is so extreme that a mainstream news anchor recently said it was a manuscript that <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/cbs-hires-dei-strategist-to-counsel-journalists-upset-by-questioning-of-ta-nehisi-coates">terrorists</a> would read.
“I have to say, when I read the book, I imagine if I took your name out of it, took away the awards, the acclaim, took the cover off the book, publishing house goes away, the content of that section would not be out of place in the backpack of an extremist,” said CBS News anchor Tony Dokoupil.
Noah said that people were outraged by Dokoupil&#8217;s assessment of the book because Coates was asked to answer legitimate questions about his claims.
&#8220;I sat there. I don&#8217;t get flabbergasted by much. I genuinely don&#8217;t. I sat down, I was like, what?&#8221; Noah said. &#8220;My first thought is, yes, but if you remove every context from everything, then everything could go anywhere. You know what I mean?&#8221;

CBS vetted questions for woke activist Ta-Nehisi Coates through its Race and Culture unit, which was created in the summer of 2020 during the George Floyd riots.
“CBS Mornings” anchor Tony Dokoupil, however, went off script, asking Coates tough questions about his new book “The Message,” which portrays Israel as the aggressor in the Israel-Gaza conflict and Palestinians as perpetual victims, The Daily Wire previously <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/cbs-anchor-met-with-race-and-culture-unit-following-questioning-of-ta-nehisi-coates" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reported</a>. Dokoupil was reprimanded for his questioning.
The Race and Culture unit reviewed the interview and determined that while “Dokoupil’s questions and intentions were acceptable, his tone was not,” Puck News <a href="https://puck.news/the-tony-ta-nehisi-affair/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reported</a>. Further, the network’s Standards and Practices division “determined that Dokoupil had not followed the preproduction process where questions are run through Race and Culture and Standards and Practice.”
CBS News and Stations president and CEO Wendy McMahon told Dokoupil about the violations and said they would be addressed with staff. McMahon and her top deputy Adrienne Roark then spent three days figuring out how to do that before telling staff on October 7. At that staff meeting, CBS News’ chief legal correspondent Jan Crawford <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/cbs-hires-dei-strategist-to-counsel-journalists-upset-by-questioning-of-ta-nehisi-coates" target="_blank" rel="noopener">criticized</a> the determination.
“I don’t even understand how Tony’s interview failed to meet our editorial standards,” Crawford said, Dylan Byers reported. “I thought our commitment was to truth. When someone comes on our air with a one-sided account of a very complex situation—which Coates himself acknowledges that he has—it’s my understanding that as a journalist we are obligated to challenge that worldview, so that our viewers can have access to the truth and can have a more balanced account…”
“… And that is what Tony did,” Crawford continued, according to Byers. “He challenged Coates’ one-sided worldview, Coates got to respond. It was civil… I don’t see how we can say that it failed to meet our editorial standards…. Tony prevented a one-sided account from being broadcast on our network about a deeply complex situation that completely was devoid of history or fact. As journalists, that’s what we have an obligation to do.”
Media reporter Justin Baragona <a href="https://t.co/sHEbQMAkgL" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reported</a> that Dokoupil admitted to going off script when it came to his questioning of Coates, but defended his tone and questions. At one point during the staff meeting, a staffer asked Dokoupil how he would interview a Palestinian guest, and Dokoupil said he would ask the guest about their politics and whether Israel has a right to exist. This apparently prompted “groans” in the room, Baragona reported.

An unnamed insider told Baragona, “If Tony would just shut the f*** up, none of this would be happening.”
Dokoupil has pressed Coates on the framing of his book, which compares the Israel-Gaza conflict to slavery in America.

Dokoupil also pushed Coates to answer why he left out so many facts in the book that are beneficial to Israel.
“Why leave out that Israel is surrounded by countries that want to eliminate it? Why leave out that Israel deals with terror groups that want to eliminate it?” Dokoupil asked.
Coates didn’t get upset or hostile toward Dokoupil’s questioning and responded by saying his book was not supposed to be an exact history of the conflict but about a different perspective, even though the perspective he put forth is the dominating one in academic and media circles.
Amid the reprimand of Dokoupil, it has been <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/literally-fake-news-cbs-told-news-staff-to-avoid-referring-to-jerusalem-as-being-in-israel" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reported</a> that CBS News told staff not to refer to Jerusalem “as being in Israel,” even though it has been recognized as Israel’s capital since 1995.
“Yes, the U.S. embassy is there and the Trump administration recognized it as being Israel’s capital. But its status is disputed,” CBS News Senior Director of Standards Mark Memmott said in an email to staff. “The status of Jerusalem goes to the heart of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Israel regards Jerusalem as its ‘eternal and undivided’ capital, while the Palestinians claim East Jerusalem—occupied by Israel in the 1967 Middle East war—as the capital of a future state.”
Israel exists now, while Memmott’s phrasing suggests Jerusalem can’t be referred to as the capital because of a potential future change, which may never happen.

The media mogul who chairs Paramount Global, owner of CBS News, is standing by a “CBS Mornings” anchor who questioned woke activist Ta-Nehisi Coates about his new book on the Israel-Gaza conflict.
Shari Redstone, who brokered a deal earlier this year to sell Paramount along with CBS to Skydance, called the decision to reprimand anchor Tony Dokoupil “a mistake,” The Hollywood Reporter <a href="https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/business/business-news/cbs-mornings-shari-redstone-tony-dokoupil-tanehisi-coates-interview-1236026823/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reported</a>.
Redstone, speaking at a panel during Advertising Week, said she believed Dokoupil “did a great job with that interview.”
“I was very proud of the work that he did,” she added. “Yes, as hard as it was for me to go against this company, I think they made a mistake here.”
“I just want to be clear that I’ve been working with the CEOs,” she continued, according to THR. “I’ve been working with the woman who does a lot of our diversity training, and I think we all agree that this was not handled correctly, and we all agree that something needs to be done. I don’t have, you know, editorial control. I am not an executive, but I have a voice in our platform, like all of us.”
Redstone also said during the panel: “I think the most important thing that can come out of this is that we all recognize that we need to provide a platform where people can have a voice, where they can have civil discourse, where they can challenge each other, and we need to make sure that we give equal opportunity for this regardless of what side of the issue you’re on.”
“I’m very glad that we had this person on our show,” she added, referring to Coates. “I’m very glad that we gave him an opportunity to speak, but we have to also provide the opportunity to challenge him on what he says, just like we challenge everybody else.”
Redstone made the comments during a conversation with Matthew Segal, Co-Founder and Co-CEO of ATTN, a social storytelling media company and content studio.
Dokoupil came under fire at the network after he pressed Coates on his new book, “The Message,” which portrays Palestinians as perpetual victims.
“For as sure as my ancestors were born into a country where none of them was the equal of any white man, Israel was revealing itself to be a country where no Palestinian is ever the equal of any Jewish person anywhere,” Coates wrote in his book, <a href="https://www.cnn.com/2024/10/07/media/cbs-ta-nehisi-coates-tony-dokoupil-interview/index.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">according to CNN</a>.
Dokoupil, who is Jewish, pressed Coates on this particular framing.

While Dokoupil was forced into a meeting and to apologize to co-workers, CBS did nothing when anchor Gayle King lectured the father of an eight-year-old Israeli girl who was being held hostage by Hamas that he needed to have compassion for Palestinians as well.

CBS Anchor Met With ‘Race And Culture Unit’ Following Questioning Of Ta-Nehisi Coates

I didn&#8217;t expect to have to do this so soon after the release of my film &#8220;Am I Racist?,&#8221; but at this point I have no choice. Already, I find myself having to dispel rumors on social media that a sequel to the film is in production, in which I don an even more convincing disguise and infiltrate the most absurd DEI struggle sessions that I can find, deep inside the bowels of corporate America.
You might think that rumors like this would be hard to take seriously — if only because I probably wouldn&#8217;t be able to find any more DEI struggle sessions to infiltrate. After all, it&#8217;s been more than four years since the DEI craze began. And it&#8217;s clear now that the industry is crumbling.
Universities from Florida to Texas to Kentucky have closed their DEI departments. Various state governments are doing the same thing.
Meanwhile, people like Robby Starbuck have exposed several major companies for promoting the DEI scam — including Tractor Supply, John Deere and Harley Davidson. And every single time, once they&#8217;re exposed, these companies reverse course. They&#8217;re all aware how shameful and counterproductive DEI programs are. So they&#8217;re canceling them, left and right.
But the truth is that, despite all that&#8217;s happened, there are still a few failing institutions in this country that are clinging on to the DEI industry. In times of internal crisis, there are some major corporations and government agencies that are willing to pay DEI consultants in a desperate attempt to right the ship. And some of these attempts are so comical, on their face, that they would admittedly make great fodder for a sequel to &#8220;Am I Racist?&#8221;. I&#8217;ll go through a couple of examples in a second. But first I want to reassure anyone who&#8217;s about to be forced to attend a DEI workshop that no, I will not be in attendance — with a man bun or otherwise. I’ve done my time. I’ve already been certified. I don’t need to go back into that environment. And that might be a missed opportunity, frankly, since these DEI sessions are now so absurd that they really should be featured in a comedy movie of some kind.

What&#8217;s happening at CBS News right now is maybe the best example. 
They&#8217;ve just brought in a DEI expert because the whole company is falling apart. They&#8217;re self-immolating. Here&#8217;s the background. 
Yesterday, Puck News reported that: &#8220;CBS NEWS has been roiling after a CBS Mornings interview in which [a CBS anchor] pressed Ta-Nehisi Coates over his pro-Palestinian framing of Israel-Palestine conflict. &#8230; This morning, on October 7, CBS News leaders Wendy McMahon &amp; Adrienne Roark told staff that the interview did not meet editorial standards for impartiality, though they declined to elaborate on how or why. When they tried to move on, CBS News chief legal correspondent Jan Crawford criticized the leaders for their decision.&#8221;
So to summarize, CBS News is melting down internally over a seven-minute interview on CBS Mornings, in which an anchor supposedly failed to be &#8220;impartial&#8221; during an interview with a guest named Ta-Nehisi Coates. Here&#8217;s part of the interview. This is as heated as it got, as far as I can tell. Watch:

So there&#8217;s a question that&#8217;s not very flattering, at least by the standards of a &#8220;CBS Mornings&#8221; interview. But it&#8217;s a completely reasonable question. The anchor wants to know why the guy&#8217;s book is so one-sided. And instead of answering the question, the author starts talking about how the media is aligned against him. It&#8217;s a pretty obvious dodge. But there&#8217;s nothing particularly remarkable about any of this. And the rest of the conversation goes on in the same way. It remains cordial, on both sides, for the entire segment.
Put another way, this was not the kind of interview that should&#8217;ve caused any kind of meltdown inside a news organization that employs adults. It really shouldn&#8217;t have provoked any kind of reaction whatsoever.
Reasonable people — whatever they think of this particular issue — should be able to tolerate frank, direct questions about their beliefs. But inside CBS News, that&#8217;s not happening. The network is tearing itself apart because a lot of their employees are upset that the anchor didn&#8217;t heap praise on this guy&#8217;s book. The anchor wasn&#8217;t sufficiently deferential to the plight of people in Gaza, or whatever. So the leaders of CBS News are now apologizing — saying the interview didn&#8217;t meet their, &#8220;editorial standards.&#8221;
First of all, the idea that CBS News has any &#8220;editorial standards&#8221; would be news to anyone who watched the vice presidential debate between JD Vance and Tim Walz. At one point, the CBS moderators invented a quote out of thin air, and then attributed it to Vance. At another point, they tried to do a drive-by fact-check that happened to be false. And when Vance tried to correct the record, they cut his microphone.
But, despite all this, CBS News is still pretending that they&#8217;re a serious news organization with &#8220;standards.&#8221; And those &#8220;standards&#8221; apparently mean that anchors don&#8217;t get to ask questions about books — at least when those questions upset the Left-wing activists inside the organization who, for some reason, are posing as journalists. So CBS&#8217; management is panicking. They have no idea what to do. And in their panic, they&#8217;re falling back on a familiar strategy. Instead of displaying any form of leadership whatsoever, they&#8217;re outsourcing the job. And they&#8217;re not just outsourcing it to anyone. They&#8217;re bringing in the big guns. Specifically, they&#8217;re bringing in a DEI expert.

Here&#8217;s the follow-up report, again from Puck News. I promise this isn&#8217;t a guerilla marketing campaign for my movie: &#8220;UPDATE: CBS News has invited self-described &#8216;mental health expert, DEI strategist and trauma trainer&#8217; Dr. Donald Grant to moderate conversation on this issue in an all-staff meeting tomorrow.&#8221;
Again, to be clear, I am not Dr. Donald Grant. That is not my alter ego. But you&#8217;d be forgiven for thinking otherwise, given the circumstances. I mean, if you go on LinkedIn, you&#8217;ll find that Dr. Grant is the author of an article about Kamala Harris that&#8217;s entitled, &#8220;She is a DEI hire. So what?&#8221; And that does sound like something I&#8217;d write.
But in fact, Dr. Donald Grant is a very real DEI consultant that CBS News has called in, all because one of their anchors asked a mildly probing question to a guest on a talk show. And Dr. Donald Grant is not me. He doesn&#8217;t appear to be anything like me, in fact. For one thing, I&#8217;m DEI certified, which Dr. Donald Grant doesn&#8217;t appear to be. And that&#8217;s a big credential, as I outline in the film. Also, Dr. Donald Grant does not have a glorious man bun. Additionally, unlike Dr. Donald Grant, I don&#8217;t post unhinged cartoons on Instagram that mock black Republicans simply because they&#8217;re black. That&#8217;s another notable difference. This is one of those cartoons that Grant uploaded, to give you some idea what I&#8217;m talking about:

This is the kind of thing that CBS News apparently likes to see in their DEI experts. If you ask me, it seems a bit like a liability. But the biggest distinction between myself and Dr. Donald Grant — and the reason that CBS should&#8217;ve hired me instead of him — is that I don&#8217;t just make things up. If you&#8217;ve seen my film, you know that my DEI workshop was airtight. Everything I said was verifiably true, sane and reasonable. My workshops really get down to the nitty gritty, even to the point of elder abuse and self-flagellation.
Dr. Donald Grant isn’t as serious about doing the work. His DEI sessions clearly don&#8217;t meet the same standard. I can make that assumption because I just watched Grant&#8217;s recent appearance on a podcast entitled, &#8220;BORN TO BE DOPE!&#8221;. Here&#8217;s part of it. As you watch this, try not to be distracted by the bizarre, lifesize photo of the host that&#8217;s displayed on the screen right behind him. We&#8217;ll come back to that later. Watch:

So &#8220;one of the biggest pieces of evidence&#8221; that white supremacy is real, according to Dr. Grant, is the &#8220;black mortality rate.&#8221; Specifically, he says that, quote, &#8220;research shows us that black babies are more likely to live if they&#8217;re cared for by black doctors.&#8221;
This is a claim that&#8217;s very popular among DEI activists. In fact, one of our DEI Supreme Court justices, Ketanji Brown Jackson, made this same argument in a recent opinion. The implication is that white doctors just don&#8217;t care as much about black babies, so they let them die, I guess. Or they don&#8217;t try as hard, or communicate as well with the babies&#8217; parents, or whatever. (As an aside, this is maybe the only time you&#8217;ll get Left-wing activists to pretend to care about babies being left to die. When Tim Walz or Ralph Northam say doctors can kill babies who survive abortions, they have no problem with it. But if they can blame &#8220;white supremacy,&#8221; then suddenly they care.)
Except this isn&#8217;t happening, at all, in any way, shape, or form. A lawyer named Ted Frank took a close look at the data. He found two things. First of all, this claim appears to originate from a study by George Mason University doctors showing that, when there&#8217;s a black doctor and a black infant, the survival rate for the infant is 99.96%. And when it&#8217;s a white doctor and a black infant, the survival rate is marginally lower — at 99.91%. So this is not a big difference we&#8217;re talking about. And more importantly, there&#8217;s a very clear explanation for the difference, which is that white doctors tend to be more highly specialized than black doctors on average. So they see the worst cases — babies in the NICU who are barely clinging to life. That&#8217;s the logical explanation for the difference in survival rates. But it never even occurs to these liars, because all they&#8217;re capable of doing is lying. They&#8217;re too busy promoting themselves and their victimhood to actually think about the issues they&#8217;re talking about.
That&#8217;s especially true of the host of this &#8220;BORN TO BE DOPE!&#8221; podcast, who as I mentioned, does his show in front of a gigantic picture of himself. That actually came up at one point during this conversation.

So growing up, this podcast host went to church, where he learned to be &#8220;meek&#8221; and &#8220;humble.&#8221; And then he grew out of that nonsense. Now he understands the true purpose of life. Now he realizes he was &#8220;BORN TO BE DOPE!&#8221;.
Now, I&#8217;m a little rusty on my exegesis, admittedly. But I believe “born to be dope” is somewhere in 1Corinthians. So this checks out. Who needs hope, love, or faith, when you have your own doneness to fall back on? Who needs humility when you can elevate and worship yourself? That’s the foundation of DEI, after all. And remarkably, not every company has abandoned it yet. There are still dumpster fires like CBS News that have a place for this nonsense, long after every reasonable person has moved on.

Another one of those dumpster fires, as we all know, is the federal government. They also have a use for DEI. Take FEMA, for example. As you may have heard, they&#8217;re under fire lately for completely failing to do their one job, which is to respond quickly and effectively to disasters. In fact, if anything, they&#8217;re actively impeding rescue efforts. They&#8217;ve also somehow managed to run out of money, even as they&#8217;re giving more than a billion dollars to illegal migrants. How did that happen, exactly?
In recent days, a lot of people have noticed that FEMA&#8217;s top strategic priority, according to its website, is &#8220;equity.&#8221; Here&#8217;s what that looks like in practice. This is footage from an internal FEMA disaster preparedness meeting called &#8216;“Helping LGBTQIA+ Survivors Before Disasters.&#8221; It was held last year. Panelists included Maggie Jarry of the &#8220;Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration,&#8221; and someone named Tyler Atkins, an &#8220;Emergency Management Specialist at FEMA&#8221; who uses he/they pronouns. &#8220;“The shift we’re seeing right now is a shift in emergency services from utilitarian principles — where everything is designed for the greatest good for the greatest amount of people — to disaster equity. But we have to do more.&#8221;
That&#8217;s a quote that needs to be repeated every day until this entire organization is dismantled. They&#8217;re openly admitting they don&#8217;t want to help as many people as they can. They&#8217;re saying that some people deserve to suffer during disasters — specifically, American citizens (and particularly straight white males, we can assume). Illegal aliens, meanwhile, get to loot the treasury. They get more than a billion dollars, while FEMA runs out of money for American citizens.
This is the anti-American, anti-human ideology that defines DEI. That&#8217;s always been the case, ever since DEI became a multi-billion dollar industry. What&#8217;s changed is that almost everyone realizes this now. The only organizations that are still clinging to DEI, at least publicly, are some of the most dysfunctional places on the planet. And I don&#8217;t need to make another movie mocking their DEI programs, because at this point, they&#8217;re doing a great job of that on their own.
So no, I&#8217;m not secretly leading the DEI session at CBS News today. I won&#8217;t be infiltrating FEMA any time soon. That&#8217;s the good news for the people running the DEI scams at these organizations. The bad news — the news that spells the end for their entire industry — is that, with or without my involvement, the rest of the country is now united in laughing at them.

A “CBS Mornings” interview with woke activist Ta-Nehisi Coates has become a fiasco for the news outlet, which is reportedly hired a self-described “mental health expert, DEI strategist, and trauma trainer” to facilitate a discussion with employees upset by the interview before canceling his mediation shortly before the event was to take place.
The situation began on September 30, when Coates sat down with “CBS Mornings” co-anchor Tony Dokoupil to discuss Coates’ new book about the Israel-Gaza conflict. Coates predictably argues in the book that Israel is at fault for the conflict and compares it to his past work on slavery in America.
“For as sure as my ancestors were born into a country where none of them was the equal of any white man, Israel was revealing itself to be a country where no Palestinian is ever the equal of any Jewish person anywhere,” Coates wrote in his book, <a href="https://www.cnn.com/2024/10/07/media/cbs-ta-nehisi-coates-tony-dokoupil-interview/index.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">according to CNN</a>.
Dokoupil pressed Coates on this particular framing.
“I have to say, when I read the book, I imagine if I took your name out of it, took away the awards, the acclaim, took the cover off the book, publishing house goes away, the content of that section would not be out of place in the backpack of an extremist,” Dokoupil said in the interview, according to CNN.

Dokoupil also pushed Coates to answer why he left out so many facts in the book that are beneficial to Israel.
“Why leave out that Israel is surrounded by countries that want to eliminate it? Why leave out that Israel deals with terror groups that want to eliminate it?” Dokoupil asked.
Coates didn’t get upset or hostile toward Dokoupil’s questioning and responded by saying his book was not supposed to be an exact history of the conflict but about a different perspective, even though the perspective he put forth is the dominating one in academic and media circles.
“I am most concerned, always, with those who don’t have a voice,” Coates told Dokoupil.
Following the interview, some correspondents and producers at CBS complained that Dokoupil was biased toward Israel and showed that bias during his interview with Coates.
On Monday, CBS News and Stations president and CEO Wendy McMahon and her top deputy Adrienne Roark informed staff that the interview did not meet the network’s standards for impartiality, Puck News&#8217; Dylan Byers <a href="https://x.com/DylanByers/status/1843338916822200722" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reported</a>.

During that meeting, CBS News’ chief legal correspondent Jan Crawford criticized the determination, according to Byers.
&#8220;I don&#8217;t even understand how Tony&#8217;s interview failed to meet our editorial standards,” Crawford said, according to Byers. “I thought our commitment was to truth. When someone comes on our air with a one-sided account of a very complex situation—which Coates himself acknowledges that he has—it&#8217;s my understanding that as a journalist we are obligated to challenge that worldview, so that our viewers can have access to the truth and can have a more balanced account&#8230;&#8221;
&#8220;&#8230; And that is what Tony did,” Crawford continued. “He challenged Coates&#8217; one-sided worldview, Coates got to respond. Grant came under fire earlier this year for altering the cover of Harriet Beecher Stowe’s novel “Uncle Tom’s Cabin” to include the face of Republican Senator Tim Scott of South Carolina, renaming the book “Uncle Tim’s Cabin,” <a href="https://nypost.com/2024/10/07/media/cbs-news-calls-in-dei-expert-who-mocked-black-senator-as-uncle-tim-in-wake-of-tony-dokoupil-scandal/">according</a> to the New York Post.
A source close to the situation told the Post that CBS’ hiring of Grant to moderate the discussion was “idiotic” and noted the irony of the network hiring someone who is “insanely racist.”
Shortly before the mediation was set to take place, Byers reported that CBS had canceled Grant&#8217;s appearance, without explaining why, and would hold smaller meetings instead.

CBS Hires, Cancels ‘Trauma Trainer’ To Counsel Journalists Upset By Questioning Of Ta-Nehisi Coates

A school board in Tennessee voted earlier this week to approve termination charges against a tenured teacher accused of insubordination and repeated unprofessional conduct after he gave multiple assignments focusing on white privilege but failed to present opposing points of view.
WJHL News <a href="https://www.wjhl.com/news/local/sullivan-county-teacher-facing-termination-at-school-board-meeting-tuesday-supporters-to-gather/">reported</a>, “The Sullivan County Board of Education Tuesday voted 6-1 that the charges of dismissal against teacher Matthew Hawn are true and warranted.” According to the outlet, some former students gathered at the meeting to voice their support for Hawn.
District officials pointed to two separate incidents that they said violated the Tennessee Teacher Code of Ethics, including denying students access to varying points of view and intentionally exposing them to embarrassment or disparagement.
Hawn, who taught “Contemporary Issues” and coached baseball at Sullivan Central High School, received a detailed letter of reprimand in February after assigning students to read an opinion article by Ta-Nehisi Coates titled, “<a href="https://www.theatlantic.com/magazine/archive/2017/10/the-first-white-president-ta-nehisi-coates/537909/">The First White President</a>.” According to the letter, a parent had complained, citing the article’s “somewhat angry, and hateful opinion towards President Trump” which they said contained “words” that should not be “introduced to our children by a high school teacher.”

The article claimed Donald Trump would not have been elected president if he was not Caucasian. It included words derived from “cuckold,” a term Coates said, “is specifically meant to debase by fear and fantasy – the target is so weak that he would submit to the humiliation of having his white wife lie with black men.” Coates also used the word “whore,” and wrote “n*****” eight times, including six times in a single paragraph.
Officials told Hawn the Code of Ethics required him to provide varying and credible points of view.
“Your job is not to teach one perspective,” wrote Ingrid Deloach, assistant director of Sullivan County Schools. “Your job is also not to ensure students simply adopt your own personal perspective.”
Hawn defended the assignment by falsely stating, “Those were the words of the President and I thought that kids were mature enough to handle it.” He also claimed, “There is no credible source for a differing point of view.” He appealed the issuance of his letter of reprimand, but the Board voted 6-0 to uphold it in early March.

Later that month, Hawn faced a second round of reprimands when students reported he showed a “White Privilege” poetry <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qkz5UmXugzk">video</a> to his class that contained more inappropriate terms and phrases, including “asses,” “s***,” and “f*** my brains out.”
The charges of dismissal compiled by the school board alleged: “Hawn clearly knew the video’s content was inappropriate, especially in light of the prior letter of reprimand, as more than one student confirmed that Hawn remarked to the class that playing the video could affect his job status (one student quoted Hawn as saying – ‘I’m about to get fired but I don’t really care.’)”
Hawn confirmed to the Board that no other perspectives were presented to students.
During Tuesday’s meeting, Sullivan County Director of Schools Dr. David Cox said he had been accused of racism for backing the charges against Hawn.
“There has been a lot of talk online that accuses me of moving to dismiss Mr. Hawn because he taught anti-racism lessons,” said Cox. “Let me be perfectly clear. Sullivan County Schools, and I in no way condone racism of any county. We have encouraged all of our teachers, including Mr. Hawn, to promote an environment welcoming to all students of all races of all backgrounds.”
“Appropriate discussions around concepts like white privilege remain perfectly appropriate for a high school class, like contemporary issues,” Cox continued. “These charges of dismissal are about Mr. Hawn refusing to provide his students with access to varying points of view, which is required under Tennessee law. And these charges are about Mr. Hawn, again, assigning inappropriate materials to his students.”
Hawn obtained tenure with the school system in 2008. He has 30 days to request a hearing before an impartial hearing officer and remains suspended without pay.
