MSNBC anchor Symone Sanders claimed on Saturday that the deportation of Salvadoran citizen and suspected MS-13 gang member Kilmar Abrego-Garcia was just one step on the road toward President Donald Trump&#8217;s administration deporting black American citizens.
Sanders began with an article written for The Nation earlier in the week — in which the author had suggested the deportation of criminal aliens, designated terrorists, and gang members effectively heralded the fall of democracy in the United States — and argued that &#8220;people of color and vulnerable communities &#8230; are next in line.&#8221;

&#8220;We&#8217;ve been talking about this all week, but Janai Nelson of the NAACP Legal Defense Fund, she penned an op-ed in The Nation this week,&#8221; Sanders began. &#8220;And her op-ed talked about that we think democracies are — the way they die is dramatically, through these wars, and blood is shed, and it&#8217;s cinematic in a sense. But really, the realistic way in which democracies die, is it is dismantled brick by brick, piece by piece.&#8221;
&#8220;And she says that what we are seeing now with the lawlessness from this administration are really the canaries in the coal mine gasping for air,&#8221; Sanders continued. &#8220;I&#8217;m paraphrasing here. But to me, that is why Kilmar Abrego-Garcia&#8217;s specific case, the case of the gentleman who&#8217;s a make-up artist out of California who was also sent to that prison, that&#8217;s what the more — the 75% of the folks who have been sent, the men who have been sent there that don&#8217;t have criminal records — that is why this is so important.&#8221;
Sanders then pivoted to suggest that if illegal immigrants could be deported, it would not be long before citizens could also be deported.
&#8220;If they can do it to them, if they can snatch students off the street without any pushback or recourse, they will do it to any of us,&#8221; she declared. &#8220;To be very clear, it&#8217;s going to be the people of color, and vulnerable communities that are next in line.&#8221;
Rep. Glenn Ivey (D-MD) agreed with Sanders&#8217; assessment, saying that was why the black community appeared largely supportive of bringing Abrego-Garcia back to the United States.

Chuck Schumer (D-NY) — and the handful of other Senate Democrats who had voted with him to pass the Republican-led continuing resolution — &#8220;blew it.&#8221;
Townsend worked for a number of prominent Democrats and leftists prior to her stint on MSNBC, serving as press secretary for Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) and then as a senior adviser first to former President Joe Biden and then to former Vice President Kamala Harris — but she said that Schumer&#8217;s move to avert a government shutdown was enough to finally drive her out.

&#8220;There’s actually little that the Senate minority leader can say, and the 10 Democrats that voted with the Republicans can say, to appease somebody like me,&#8221; she said, complaining that Schumer and the others had &#8220;folded like a paper napkin&#8221; when push came to shove.
&#8220;I’m about to change my registration to independent, first and foremost,&#8221; Townsend continued, adding, &#8220;I’m pissed.&#8221;
She did reserve some praise for House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) and House Democrats, who voted against the CR with only one exception — Rep. Jared Golden (D-ME). &#8220;Shout out to High King Jeffries, though, because the congressional Democrats stayed together,&#8221; she said.
&#8220;In 2024, Democrats ran on warnings that Trump was going to destroy democracy, and now that he and his team are very much in the process of doing just that, these same politicians are questioning whether or not to stand up to him and his party at one of the first opportunities they have to meaningfully do so,&#8221; Townsend said. &#8220;The only opportunity, I would add, there’s not another option for Senate or Democratic or Senate Democrats or House Democrats to effectively push back. This was it! They blew it!&#8221;
Townsend warned that Schumer had likely awakened something within the party, adding, &#8220;The Democratic Tea Party was born the same day that Chuck Schumer took to that podium to read that very well-crafted statement that told us he folded like a paper napkin.&#8221;

The Democratic National Committee chair forum quickly turned into a cringefest on Thursday night when protesters started controlling the questions, a candidate broke out into song, and every candidate <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/every-dnc-chair-candidate-says-racism-misogyny-played-a-role-in-kamalas-defeat" target="_blank" rel="noopener">agreed</a> that former Vice President Kamala Harris lost because of &#8220;racism and misogyny.&#8221;
The forum at Georgetown University was hosted by MSNBC and three of the network&#8217;s most leftist hosts: Jen Psaki, Symone Sanders, and Jonathan Capehart. In between the outbursts of climate change protesters, eight candidates attempted to put their vision forward for a party that was blown out in the 2024 election.
It didn&#8217;t take long, however, for the forum to give way to some strange moments.

Dr. Quintessa Hathaway of Arkansas told the audience she wanted to give them &#8220;something that&#8217;s been on [her] heart here over the last couple days.&#8221; Hathaway then began singing, &#8220;You fight on, you fight on, you fight on. When your government is doing you wrong, you fight on.&#8221; When Hathaway finished her song, a few sympathy claps broke out in the audience.

It took no time for leftist climate change protesters to disrupt the forum. Immediately after MSNBC host Symone Sanders told the candidates, &#8220;I&#8217;m going to kick off our questioning tonight,&#8221; the climate activists started shouting questions, and Sanders struggled to regain control of the conversation.

Republicans and conservative political commentators had some fun with the moment, pointing out that Democrats refuse to change their message despite the American people clearly stating that they&#8217;re fed up with the overused talking points.

Speaking of overused talking points, one DNC chair candidate, Nate Snyder, doubled down on the argument that Trump and the Republican Party represent &#8220;the biggest threat&#8221; to American national security.
&#8220;We need to push back with everything we got, and my intention is to disrupt, dismantle this propaganda lying machine,&#8221; Snyder, who used to work for the Department of Homeland Security, said of the Trump administration.

With a straight face, Ben Wikler, the chair of the Wisconsin Democratic Party, claimed that &#8220;thumbs on the scale&#8221; are likely &#8220;trying to push down Democratic narratives&#8221; and &#8220;lift up Republican narratives.&#8221; Of course, none of the MSNBC journalists nor Wikler mentioned how the opposite was true when the Biden administration pressured social media companies like Twitter and Facebook to censor conservative voices.

MSNBC host Symone Sanders-Townsend claimed during a panel discussion that President Joe Biden was &#8220;unequivocally&#8221; more mentally fit than President-elect Donald Trump — over the objections of at least two of her fellow panelists.
Sanders-Townsend, who worked on Biden&#8217;s 2020 presidential campaign and then worked for Vice President Kamala Harris before leaving the administration to go to MSNBC, made the comments on NBC&#8217;s &#8220;Meet the Press&#8221; on Sunday morning.
&#8220;I was very surprised when you asked the question about mental acuity he didn’t more forcefully push back. The question on the table is: Is the president all the way there? And the answer is: unequivocally yes!&#8221; Sanders-Townsend began, adding, &#8220;Now, people can say that you feel as though President Biden might be a little too old to do the job. But he is doing the job, and his mental acuity is there.&#8221;
&#8220;So I think that there’s a conflation of two things here. It’s his mental capacity, and serving another four years as old as he is,&#8221; Sanders-Townsend continued, arguing that people were seeing Biden&#8217;s age and assuming that meant he wasn&#8217;t all there. &#8220;But those are two separate things in my opinion. And look, these people, they have known Joe Biden their entire political lives. I know Joe Biden is like, ‘Can y’all just please defend me a little more?’&#8221;
Politico&#8217;s Jonathan Martin weighed in then, suggesting that Biden&#8217;s behavior — particularly in recent weeks — had been very obviously self-serving and hadn&#8217;t really inspired even those who might be so inclined to continue running defense for him.
&#8220;Well, it’s not worth defending him, though, because at every turn the last year and a half, he has taken the path of the most indulgent turn for himself out than the good of the party by running again, by pardoning his son, and now, frankly, by some of these choices for the Medal of Freedom, going to Rome for one last trip,&#8221; Martin said. &#8220;He’s not exiting in a way that I think reflects well on his party. And Democrats are deeply, deeply unhappy about it. And they should be frankly.&#8221;
&#8220;It hurt Democrats in November to try to tell the American people something they could see with their own eyes wasn’t true,&#8221; Marc Short, who served as chief of staff to former Vice President Mike Pence, noted.
&#8220;But it’s not true that the president doesn’t have the mental acuity,&#8221; Sanders-Townsend objected.
Short was not convinced: &#8220;Of course it is Symone! The American people saw that for themselves in the debate.&#8221;
&#8220;What are you saying? He can at least put a sentence together,&#8221; Sanders-Townsend claimed, turning the attack on Trump. &#8220;The president-elect is the one I’m concerned about.&#8221;

Edward-Isaac Dovere, a senior reporter for CNN, later <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/biden-tells-kamala-youre-not-going-anywhere-kid-amid-speculation-about-vps-future" target="_blank" rel="noopener">shared</a> that Harris had been conveying to donors and other supporters, &#8220;You haven&#8217;t seen the last of me. I&#8217;m not going quietly into the night,&#8221; and her advisers were debating what that meant.
Harris&#8217; allies do not want her &#8220;final official act ever to be essentially certifying Donald Trump&#8217;s win,&#8221; Dovere said during an <a href="https://x.com/jacobkschneider/status/1868309712300904903" target="_blank" rel="noopener">appearance</a> on CNN&#8217;s &#8220;Inside Politics,&#8221; adding that they see the California governor&#8217;s race as being a &#8220;layup&#8221; for the vice president.
A number of Democrats have <a href="https://www.latimes.com/california/story/2024-08-09/california-governor-2026-candidates-newsom-atkins-kounalakis-thurmond-villaraigosa-yee" target="_blank" rel="noopener">already begun</a> campaigns for California governor, but polling <a href="https://www.latimes.com/california/story/2024-11-13/poll-california-governor-race-2026" target="_blank" rel="noopener">indicates</a> Harris would have an edge if she ran. Two weeks ago, during a joint appearance at a Democratic National Committee (DNC) holiday reception in Washington, D.C., President Joe Biden <a href="https://x.com/jacobkschneider/status/1868438906783556081" target="_blank" rel="noopener">discussed</a> choosing Harris as his running mate and hinted at her potential future in politics.
&#8220;She always served this country with purpose and integrity and she always will,&#8221; Biden said. The president then turned back to speak directly to Harris and declared, &#8220;You&#8217;re not going anywhere, kid, because we&#8217;re not going to let you go.&#8221;
Prior to Biden&#8217;s remarks at the same event, Harris <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sc2_4GTgsLU" target="_blank" rel="noopener">used her own speech</a> to reassure fellow Democrats, insisting, &#8220;We are not defeated. Let&#8217;s be clear about that. Sanders, who worked on Senator Bernie Sanders&#8217; (I-VT) 2016 presidential campaign, began by pointing to the numbers — Phillips took third place behind President Joe Biden and fellow Democratic challenger Marianne Williamson — and asked Phillips to explain how he could possibly hope to win a general election when he could not win the Democratic primary.

Phillips pointed to the fact that his name recognition nationally was practically non-existent — something he attributed to the fact that the Democratic Party appeared to be more interested in simply coronating Joe Biden than in encouraging healthy debate and competition.
&#8220;I think I probably have 5% name recognition now in the country. No voters know me,&#8221; Phillips said. &#8220;In fact, this is my first invitation to your network in four months. So I&#8217;m grateful to all of you — sincerely, I mean that.&#8221;
&#8220;That&#8217;s my whole point,&#8221; he continued. &#8220;The GOP has had a competition. They&#8217;re on TV, they&#8217;re consuming hundreds of hours of primetime television, debates, town halls. CNN has given every GOP candidate a one-hour town hall. At least there&#8217;s energy on the GOP side. We don&#8217;t get energy unless there&#8217;s competition. So when you coronate someone — especially a man like Joe Biden &#8230;&#8221;
Phillips went on to explain that he respected Biden but that his goal was to encourage more competition — a move that he said would ultimately help Democrats to put forth the best and strongest candidates.
Former Republican National Committee Chairman Michael Steele weighed in next: &#8220;So the Chairman in me says, &#8216;What the hell you doing?'&#8221;
Steele went on to argue that the Democratic Party had had a chance to choose someone different in 2020 — and they had chosen Biden. He argued that the fact that Biden was not stepping down — which Phillips said was a &#8220;big mistake&#8221; — meant that the primary was his to lose.

&#8220;Last summer, the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade with the Dobbs decision, and that was just the opening act for the assault on our fundamental rights and freedoms,&#8221; Sanders <a href="https://www.mediaite.com/uncategorized/this-is-not-hyperbole-symone-warns-supreme-court-could-make-black-history-illegal-and-refusing-to-serve-black-people-legal/">began</a>, and then she went on to lay out some of the cases and extrapolate their potential repercussions.
Referencing the cases brought by the organization Students for Fair Admissions, Sanders noted that the Court was set to weigh in on whether or not race should be considered as a factor when making college admissions decisions.
&#8220;But this court has a habit of overreaching. So, these two cases could actually upend affirmative action across the board,&#8221; she said, adding, &#8220;If the Supreme Court decides that race conscious decision-making and policies are unconstitutional, then everything from special government contracts and programs for minority owned businesses to targeted corporate recruitment at HBCUs would all be in jeopardy &#8230; Lawmakers, they could argue that specialized disciplines like African American or Latin American history are race conscious and therefore, illegal.&#8221;
Sanders then brought up Moore v. Harper, a case focusing on state legislatures&#8217; power to set federal election laws in their own states — up to and including the power to draw congressional maps.
&#8220;So, goodbye to fighting partisan, gerrymandering in state and federal court or a gubernatorial veto. The NAACP Legal Defense Fund or Marc Elias, they won’t win any more voter suppression cases because they won’t even be allowed to sue. Sayonara to mail-in ballots if the state legislature thinks they’re unnecessary,&#8221; Sanders said.
Despite the fact that the Constitution already gave the states <a href="https://constitution.congress.gov/browse/essay/artI-S4-C1-2/ALDE_00013577/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">that power</a> according to Article I, Section 4 — and gave Congress the power to check states that abused their responsibilities.
Sanders went on to argue that the court could use a case about business owners who did not want to be forced to bake wedding cakes or build wedding websites for same sex couples — if that did not align with their religious beliefs — to say that business owners should be allowed to refuse service to anyone.
&#8220;By the way, companies could use the ruling to legally deny service to anyone, not just members of the LGBTQ plus community. So that daycare, you like, it could assert their First Amendment rights to not take Jewish families or black children. A locally owned restaurant could put restrictions on who they allow inside,&#8221; she said.
&#8220;Given the track record of this court, you all, this is not hyperbole. Dr. Maya Angelou said, when people show you who they are, believe them the first time,&#8221; she concluded. &#8220;We have seen the damage that this conservative Supreme Court majority can do, so brace yourselves, folks, the decisions are coming.&#8221;

Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) said during an interview on MSNBC over the weekend that investigations into President Joe Biden&#8217;s classified document scandal are nothing more than a &#8220;political game.&#8221;
The remarks came after CBS News reported early last week that classified documents were discovered at a Biden think tank.
More damaging information came out throughout the week, including subsequent classified documents found at Biden&#8217;s home in Delaware.
U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/merrick-garland-appoints-special-counsel-to-investigate-biden-classified-document-scandal">announced</a> last week that he had appointed former U.S. Attorney Robert Hur — who served during the Trump administration — to be special counsel in the investigation after the U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Illinois John Lausch, who was assigned to do an initial review of the case, recommended to Garland that a special counsel be appointed.
Omar made the remarks during an interview Saturday with Symone Sanders when she claimed that Republicans defended Trump after he &#8220;literally stole classified documents.&#8221;
Omar claimed that Trump &#8220;refused to turn them over, lied about having them, made up some story about how he declassified them, [and] had to have his house raided in order for those documents to be found.&#8221;
Omar insisted that those same Republicans &#8220;are now only interested in investigating Biden, who has cooperated, whose own staff and former staff have themselves turned these documents in.&#8221;
“You have to understand, Republicans aren’t really interested in upholding the law, in following security protocols,&#8221; she said. &#8220;What they’re interested in is playing a political game in now only wanting to investigate Biden.&#8221;
Omar said that she was &#8220;glad that there is a special prosecutor that’s been appointed to investigate this… because any time there is a deviance in regard to security protocols, that should be taken serious, it should be investigated.&#8221;

For others, not so much.
Symone Sanders recently tried to make the move. Sanders, who served as national press secretary for Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders during his 2016 presidential campaign, then worked as a senior adviser for Joe Biden in his 2020 presidential campaign before becoming the top spokesperson for Vice President Kamala Harris, didn&#8217;t exactly knock &#8217;em out.
&#8220;Sanders drew just 361,000 total viewers for her 4 p.m. show, titled &#8216;Symone,&#8217; on Saturday,&#8221; the New York Post <a href="https://nypost.com/2022/05/10/ex-biden-aide-symone-sanders-msnbc-debut-is-a-ratings-flop/">reported</a>, citing newly released Nielsen ratings. &#8220;She also managed to attract just 29,000 viewers in the advertiser-coveted 25-54 demographic.&#8221;
For comparison, Fox News Channel’s “Fox News Live,” which ran at the same time, drew 842,000 total viewers, including 163,000 in the 25-54 demographic, the Post said.
It didn&#8217;t even help that Sanders’ first guest was first lady Jill Biden.
Before her new show debuted, Sanders, 32, said “I’m not here to be a spokesperson for the Biden administration. I had that job already,” according to The Hill.
“I’m going to be honest, and sometimes the honesty means that what I have to say is not what the administration would have to say. And that’s fine, because it’s my show,&#8221; she said.
Sanders’ program airs Saturday and Sunday at 4 p.m ET. “We’re going to do today’s headlines, but we’re going to go deeper. We’re going to get to the weeds,” said Sanders, who also has served as a CNN commentator.
“I’m a millennial, and the only reason, frankly, I was turning on the TV was because of the job that I worked,&#8221; she <a href="https://nypost.com/2022/05/04/symone-sanders-insists-she-wont-be-biden-mouthpiece-on-msnbc/">said</a>. &#8220;When I wake up in the morning, I’m checking Twitter, I’m checking Instagram, I check my email, I check my text messages, and I would not turn on the TV … and then the first time I see a television that’s on is when I walk into my office.”
“So my show is going to reach people like me: young people who are engaged, who are paying attention, who care, but who may not be watching TV as regularly,&#8221; Sanders said.
More than a dozen staffers in Harris&#8217; office have bolted, including Sanders. Their exits followed a devastating USA Today/Suffolk University poll that <a href="https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/politics/2021/11/07/biden-approval-falls-38-midterms-loom-usa-today-suffolk-poll/6320098001/">showed</a> Harris earning a dismal 28% approval rating — 10 points behind President Joe Biden, who sat at a not-so-pretty 38% approval.

NBC political director and &#8220;Meet the Press&#8221; moderator Chuck Todd broached the topic during &#8220;MTP Daily&#8221; on MSNBC, pointing to the <a href="https://dailywire.com/news/we-are-gay-tourism-group-pushes-diversity-after-complaints-of-regressive-florida-laws/">escalating conflict</a> between Florida Republicans and the massive entertainment corporation over legislation like the recently-passed Parental Rights in Education law.

The panelists all laughed before Todd pivoted to inform Sanders that the Florida legislature had, in fact, already done exactly what she&#8217;d predicted they wouldn&#8217;t do.
&#8220;By the way, the Florida legislature, the State Senate, just passed this bill to strip Disney of its special access,&#8221; he said.
The Florida State Senate <a href="https://dailywire.com/news/breaking-floridas-senate-passes-bill-to-end-disneys-self-governance/">voted early Wednesday</a> to eliminate the special taxing district that has enabled Disney to effectively govern itself since 1967.
&#8220;The measure potentially delivers a blow to the company’s operations in the state,&#8221; The Wall Street Journal <a href="https://www.wsj.com/articles/florida-senate-passes-bill-to-eliminate-disneys-special-tax-district-11650473902">reported</a>. &#8220;The special district, created in 1967 and known as the Reedy Creek Improvement District, exempts Disney from a host of regulations and certain taxes and fees related to emergency services and road maintenance.&#8221;
Upon learning that DeSantis <a href="https://dailywire.com/news/disney-is-a-guest-in-florida-florida-lawmakers-consider-terminating-disneys-district/">planned</a> to promote this move in the Florida legislature&#8217;s special session, Polis responded again, saying, &#8220;We will grant Mickey and Minnie full asylum in Colorado.&#8221;

Former Kamala Harris senior adviser and chief spokesperson Symone Sanders has a new job.
MSBNBC reported Sanders will host a weekend program on the network as well as a weekday program on the network’s Peacock streaming channel, &#8220;The Choice from MSNBC,&#8221; according to <a href="https://deadline.com/2022/01/symone-sanders-joins-msnbc-as-host-on-weekends-streaming-network-1234907220/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Deadline</a>. The announcement comes just two weeks after Sanders left the vice president&#8217;s office.
The former Harris staffer&#8217;s show will “explore issues at the intersection of politics, culture and race and break down how decisions made in Washington impact electorates, industries, and communities across the country,” the network said in the announcement.
Sanders also made the announcement public on Twitter on Monday.

“Symone has served honorably for three years. The President and Vice President are grateful for Symone’s service and advocacy for this Administration. She is a valued member of the White House and a team player — she will be missed,” a spokesperson for Harris told the Post in December.
Sanders is one of multiple Harris staff members to depart in recent weeks following claims of dysfunction within the office.
