Rep. Steny Hoyer (D-MD), who once served as House Majority Leader, House Minority Whip, and Chair of the House Democratic Caucus, will be retiring from Congress at the end of his current term. He has been in Congress longer than any other Democrat.
“I have decided not to seek another term in the people’s House,” he said on Thursday on the House floor. “I make this decision with sadness, for I love this House, an institution the framers designed to reflect the will of the American people and to serve as the guardian of their liberty and their democracy.”
Hoyer is 86 years old, and he took office in 1981. He’s been a statewide figure in Maryland politics since 1967, when he first joined the Maryland Senate.
There was an outpouring of messages from some of the biggest voices in Washington following his announcement.
“Steny Hoyer is a model public servant, always keeping the American people front and center,” House Minority Whip Katherine Clark posted amid the news. “[House Democrats] are so grateful for his leadership and wish him and Elaine all the best in their next chapter.”
“Steny Hoyer’s departure is truly the end of an era in House Democratic politics. Steny always chose the more civil path, which is why he earned the mutual respect of his colleagues on both sides of the aisle—as a fair dealer, a respected leader, and an institution within the institution he most loved,” former Republican House Speaker Kevin McCarthy posted.
Hoyer joins Rep. Nancy Pelosi in not seeking re-election. The two worked together for many years when Pelosi was House Speaker.

His deep knowledge of the institution, respect for its traditions and commitment to public service have earned him the admiration of colleagues on both sides of the aisle,&#8221; Pelosi <a href="https://x.com/SpeakerPelosi/status/2009298968530796725">wrote</a> on X. &#8220;Personally, Steny has been not only a trusted partner in leadership, but a dear friend. As he concludes his extraordinary service in Congress, we celebrate Steny’s legacy of decency and devotion to country. Our gratitude to him and his family is boundless, and we wish them every happiness in the years ahead.&#8221;
Pelosi is 85 years old, and both of their departures will likely create highly competitive Democratic primaries in their deep blue districts. Age is becoming a major factor in the Democratic Party&#8217;s discussions on how to move forward in the Trump era, especially after former President Joe Biden decided to exit the 2024 election last summer.
However, some Republicans said his departure is another indicator of the Democratic Party shifting further to the Left, especially in the wake of Democratic socialist Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s election in New York City.
“Democrat Dinosaur Steny Hoyer is the latest domino to fall in the radical socialist takeover of the Democrat Party, just months after he drew a primary challenger from the left,” the National Republican Campaign Committee <a href="https://x.com/NRCC/status/2009284197865652244">posted</a>. “The far-left is pushing out Democrat Dinosaurs to make room for Mamdani&#8217;s socialist minions!”
Hoyer is one of 45 representatives who will be leaving the chamber in 2026, according to Ballotpedia.

<a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/steny-hoyer">Rep. Steny Hoyer</a> (D-MD), who served multiple terms as House majority leader, suffered a &#8220;mild&#8221; stroke over the weekend and intends to get back to work after receiving treatment, according to his office.
Margaret Mulkerrin, Hoyer&#8217;s deputy chief of staff and spokesperson, released a <a href="https://x.com/bresreports/status/1823461280923181128" target="_blank" rel="noopener">statement</a> about the health scare on Tuesday.
&#8220;On Sunday night, August 11, Rep. Steny Hoyer experienced a mild ischemic stroke and sought medical treatment,&#8221; Mulkerrin said. &#8220;Mr. Hoyer has responded well to treatment and has no lingering symptoms.&#8221;
The congressman, who is 85 years old and <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/dc-md-va/2024/01/08/steny-hoyer-reelection-maryland/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">seeking re-election</a>, &#8220;expects to resume his normal schedule next week,&#8221; Mulkerrin added. &#8220;Mr. Hoyer’s wife and family extend their deepest thanks to his medical team.&#8221;

President <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/joe-biden" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Joe Biden</a>, who is 81, dropped out of the White House contest last month after a fumbling debate performance spurred Democrats to call on him to step aside over concerns about his mental acuity and electability.
Vice President <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/kamala-harris" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Kamala Harris</a> has since clinched the nomination for the Democratic Party&#8217;s presidential nomination, setting up a general election clash against former President <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/donald-trump" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Donald Trump</a>.
The 2024 election could drastically shake up the power dynamic in Washington, D.C. Currently, the Democrats control the White House and Senate while the Republicans lead the House.

After the weekend rampage in which civilians were slaughtered, including an estimated <a href="https://apnews.com/article/israel-palestinians-gaza-hamas-music-festival-6a55aae2375944f10ecc4c52d05f2ffe">260 people at a concert</a>, Israel has gone to war with Hamas in the Gaza Strip. Officials estimate more than a thousand people have died on each side of the border over the past five days, <a href="https://twitter.com/NBCNews/status/1712144528281378850">including 22 Americans,</a> and thousands more have been injured.
Tlaib, a member of the leftist &#8220;Squad&#8221; in the House, broke her silence with a statement on Sunday that said she grieved for lives lost on both sides, advocated for peace, and called for an end to an <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/tlaib-breaks-silence-on-hamas-attack-on-israel-blames-apartheid-system">&#8220;apartheid system&#8221;</a> backed by the United States that she faulted for perpetuating the violence.
When asked if he was supportive of Tlaib&#8217;s comments, Hoyer said he disagreed with &#8220;some&#8221; of them. &#8220;She lamented the deaths on both sides,&#8221; he added, &#8220;and I think she condemned — I don&#8217;t have her statement right in front of me — she condemned terrorist activity.&#8221;

In fact, Tlaib&#8217;s <a href="https://twitter.com/nannburke/status/1711063866459685286">statement</a> over the weekend did not make any explicit mention of terrorism, but it did say the &#8220;path to the future must include lifting the blockade, ending the occupation, and dismantling the apartheid system that creates the suffocating, dehumanizing conditions that can lead to resistance.&#8221;
In addition to fracas over a Palestinian flag being spotted outside her office on Capitol Hill — which sparked a push to <a href="https://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2023/oct/10/rep-max-miller-says-no-non-us-flags-congress-after/">squelch funds</a> for non-U.S. flags being displayed in the halls of the U.S. Congress — Tlaib made headlines on Tuesday for <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/watch-rashida-tlaib-refuses-to-condemn-beheadings-of-israeli-babies-when-confronted-by-media">refusing to comment</a> when a reporter asked her about babies being killed by Hamas terrorists.
Tlaib has stirred controversy in the past with her comments about Israel, including in 2019 when <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2019/05/13/us/politics/rashida-tlaib-holocaust.html">she said</a> thinking about the Holocaust gave her a &#8220;calming feeling,&#8221; after which the congresswoman accused critics of &#8220;twisting&#8221; her words.

The combined age of the top three Democrat leaders in the U.S. House of Representatives is 247.
America is 246 years old. Let that sink in.
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) is 82. House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D-MD) is 83. And House Majority Whip James Clyburn (D-SC) is 82.
And from what we know a week after the 2022 midterm elections, none of them have any intention of leaving office any time soon (after all, they all just won new two-year terms).
But Democrats are trailing in the battle to hold control of the House. Republicans have won 211 seats compared to Democrats&#8217; 206, with 218 needed for a majority in the 435-seat chamber.
&#8220;There are still some 18 outstanding House races, including 13 considered closely competitive, according to a Reuters compilation of the leading nonpartisan forecasters. Ten of the remaining contests were in liberal-leaning California,&#8221; Reuters <a href="https://www.reuters.com/world/us/us-house-control-hinges-tight-races-after-democrats-take-senate-2022-11-14/">reported</a>.
If the GOP takes control, Pelosi will be out as Speaker and the others will lose leadership roles. At 82 &#8212; with a maximum net wealth of as much as $251 million, <a href="https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/factcheck/2021/03/16/fact-check-house-speaker-nancy-pelosis-net-worth-inflated-meme/4707087001/">according</a> to USA Today &#8212; Pelosi could just walk away and retire to a life of luxury.
But the Speaker&#8217;s fortune has <a href="https://freebeacon.com/democrats/the-stock-market-made-nancy-pelosi-rich-now-she-wants-to-ban-her-colleagues-from-trading/">grown $140 million</a> since 2008, thanks in part to her husband&#8217;s stock trades, and she&#8217;s made clear that she&#8217;s not going anywhere.
&#8220;There are all kinds of ways to exert influence. The speaker has awesome power, but I will always have influence,&#8221; she <a href="https://www.reuters.com/world/us/pelosi-says-she-does-not-plan-step-away-us-congress-2022-11-13/">told</a> CNN&#8217;s &#8220;State of the Union&#8221; program.
&#8220;My decision will then be rooted in the wishes of my family and the wishes of my caucus. But none of it will be very much considered until we see the outcome of all of this,&#8221; Pelosi told CNN.
The question must be asked: Why not live out your final years in peace and quiet, away from the contentious political struggles and intraparty backbiting inside the Capitol?
One answer is simple: Lying in state.
Politicians are not known for their humility. The hubris permeates even the Supreme Court. Take Ruth Bader Ginsberg. She had battled cancer and health issues for years, and in her mid-80s, Democrats implored her to step down so that President Barack Obama could nominate her replacement.
She didn&#8217;t, and she died in September 2020. President Donald Trump quickly nominated her replacement, Amy Coney Barrett, who was approved by the GOP-controlled Senate before Democrats took control just eight days later.
Ginsberg lay &#8220;in repose&#8221; at the Supreme Court for two days as thousands of mourners lined up to walk past the casket. She then lay in state at the Capitol and was buried beside her husband in Arlington National Cemetery.
That&#8217;s what many politicians want: They crave a lengthy lovefest even after they die &#8212; and it&#8217;s not solely Democrats; Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) orchestrated his own weeklong set of somber remembrances before his death in 2018.
The dinosaur situation is the same in the Senate. Democrat Majority Leader Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY) is 71. Senate Majority Whip Dick Durbin (D-IL) is 77. Assistant Democratic Leader Patty Murray (D-WA) is 72. Sen. Debbie Stabenow (D-MI), chairman of the Policy and Communications Committee, is 72. Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA), vice chairman of the conference, is 73. And Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT), chairman of outreach, is 81.
None of them have plans to hand over the reins to a younger generation. In fact, Pelosi over the weekend urged President Joe Biden, who turns 80 later this month, to run for re-election in 2024, saying “he has accomplished so much.&#8221;
“President Biden has been a great president for our country,” Pelosi said on ABC’s “This Week.&#8221; “Over 10 million jobs under his leadership. Working with the private sector, of course. He has just done so many things that are so great. &#8230; He has been a great president and he has a great record to run on.”
So the dinosaurs are here to stay &#8212; at least on the Democrat side of the aisle. A frontrunner for the GOP presidential nomination, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, is just 44 years old with three young children.
We didn&#8217;t get the Red Wave on Election Day. But let&#8217;s hope for a Youth Wave next time.

A vulnerable House <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/democratic-party" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Democrat</a> called for new leadership in her party Friday after they halted an effort to ban members of Congress from trading stock.
In a statement Friday, Rep. <a href="https://spanberger.house.gov/posts/spanberger-statement-on-house-leaderships-refusal-to-ban-members-of-congress-from-trading-individual-stocks" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Abigail Spanberger</a> (D-VA) slammed House Democratic leadership after they stalled the bipartisan effort to ban stock trading by members of Congress. Democrats unveiled draft legislation Tuesday, but leaders said this week that they are not ready to vote on the bill, and the House will recess Friday until after the general election. Spanberger accused leadership of using &#8220;repeated delay tactics,&#8221; and called for current leadership to be replaced.
“I’ve been proud to lead the charge on legislation to ban Members of Congress and their immediate families from trading individual stocks — not only because it’s the right thing to do, but because the Virginians I represent overwhelmingly support it and want us to get it done,&#8221; Spanberger said. &#8220;Since the early days of the pandemic, I have worked with lawmakers from both parties — and across the ideological spectrum — to earn their support for my bipartisan bill, the TRUST in Congress Act, to require individual stock holdings be divested or placed in a qualified blind trust while in office. Our commonsense proposal demonstrated that many Democrats and Republicans alike take this issue seriously and are listening to the voices of the people.&#8221;
Spanberger, who co-authored the TRUST in Congress Act with Rep. Chip Roy (R-TX), pointed out that bipartisan momentum in support of banning members from trading stocks grew in both houses of Congress. Rep. <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/another-republican-joins-efforts-to-ban-insider-trading-introduces-legislation-in-the-house">Vicky Hartzler</a> (R-MO) introduced her own bill in the House; in the Senate, <a href="https://www.cnn.com/2022/01/13/politics/lawmakers-jon-ossoff-josh-hawley-ban-stocks-trading-office/index.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">competing legislation</a> was introduced by Senators Josh Hawley (R-MO) and Jon Ossoff (D-GA), along with a third bill <a href="https://www.warren.senate.gov/newsroom/press-releases/senators-warren-daines-introduce-new-bipartisan-bill-to-ban-members-of-congress-from-owning-and-trading-stocks" target="_blank" rel="noopener">co-authored</a> by Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) and Sen. Steve Daines (R-MT). Democrats introduced versions of these bills in the House as well.
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/pelosi-has-great-confidence-in-fellow-lawmakers-but-is-now-open-to-more-stock-trading-restrictions" target="_blank" rel="noopener">expressed support</a> for a stock ban earlier this year. &#8220;However, our bipartisan reform coalition was then subjected to repeated delay tactics, hand-waving gestures, and blatant instances of Lucy pulling the football,&#8221; Spanberger complained.
“This moment marks a failure of House leadership — and it’s yet another example of why I believe that the Democratic Party needs new leaders in the halls of Capitol Hill, as I have long made known,&#8221; she continued. &#8220;Rather than bring Members of Congress together who are passionate about this issue, leadership chose to ignore these voices, push them aside, and look for new ways they could string the media and the public along — and evade public criticism.&#8221;
“In the months ahead, I will be dogged in my efforts to ban Members of Congress from using the privilege of their position to profit,&#8221; she concluded. &#8220;I look forward to working with both my Democratic and Republican colleagues to get these reforms done.&#8221;
According to Business Insider, House Administration Committee Chairwoman Zoe Lofgren (D-CA), at the direction of Pelosi, introduced the &#8220;<a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/bill-text-nancy-pelosi-house-democrats-stock-trading-ban-2022-9" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Combatting Financial Conflicts of Interest in Government Act</a>&#8221; Tuesday. But House Democratic leaders said this week that they need time to read and revise the bill. “We need to spend a little more time working on the specifics of the bill, socializing the specifics and then taking another swing at it when we have a bit more time,&#8221; Democratic House Chief Deputy Whip Stephanie Murphy (D-FL) told <a href="https://punchbowl.news/archive/92822-punchbowl-news-am/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Punchbowl News</a>.
Democratic Majority Whip Steny Hoyer (D-MD) <a href="https://www.cnn.com/2022/09/29/politics/steny-hoyer-congress-stocks-ban-lawmakers-bill/index.html?utm_term=link&amp;utm_medium=social&amp;utm_content=2022-09-29T19%3A05%3A05&amp;utm_source=twCNNp">told reporters</a> Thursday that there would be &#8220;probably no vote&#8221; on the bill this week.
Spanberger is in a closely contested race against Republican challenger Yesli Vega. The contest is currently listed as &#8220;lean Democratic&#8221; by the <a href="https://www.cookpolitical.com/ratings/house-race-ratings">Cook Political Report</a>.

The House of Representatives passed the Creating Helpful Incentives to Produce Semiconductors (CHIPS) and Science Act on Thursday, despite opposition from <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/republican-party">Republicans</a> who argued that the bill would funnel billions in taxpayer money toward corporations.
The House passed the bill in a 243-187 bipartisan vote, while it <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/corporate-welfare-or-needed-investment-to-beat-china-senate-passes-computer-chips-subsidy-bill">passed</a> the Senate on Wednesday 64-33. The bill will dedicate $52 billion in government subsidies for companies that make computer chips, provide $24 billion in tax credits, and put forth $170 billion in scientific research over the next five years. Shortly after the bill passed, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) and Senator Joe Manchin (D-WV) announced they had compromised on a bill that would raise taxes and fund climate change initiatives worth nearly $700 billion.
Prior to the vote, House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy blasted the federal government for its spending and implored his colleagues to oppose the legislation.
&#8220;The Senate passed a bill that took a small, discretionary program and turned it into a $280 billion blank check, including $79 billion in mandatory spending on corporate welfare to be handed out to whoever President Biden wants,” McCarthy said from the House floor.
“I’m a no on the Senate CHIPS bill that will come to the floor today. I was a no last week. I was a no last night. And I will be the first no on the board today,” McCarthy said. “I encourage all my Republican colleagues to join me.”
Rep. Thomas Massie (R-KY) noted that even Senator Bernie Sanders (I-VT) was against the bill because it favors corporations.
&#8220;Senator @BernieSanders said the senate CHIPS Act is &#8216;a $53 billion bribe&#8217; that semiconductor companies demanded in exchange for staying in the United States,&#8221; Massie tweeted. &#8220;He’s right. Taking money from working Americans and giving it to profitable corporations is immoral and won’t even work.&#8221;

While discussing American energy production on Friday, Democratic House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D-MD) blasted Republican criticism of President Joe Biden&#8217;s handling of the gasoline crisis during what he said was a &#8220;time of war.&#8221; Hoyer claimed that Americans needed to focus on the &#8220;enemy&#8221; — Russia.
As pointed out by many pundits and Republicans, those were peculiar comments to make considering that the U.S. is not officially at war with Russia. Even if we were, disagreeing with the president would still be allowed.
&#8220;The Biden administration approved more drilling permits in 2021 than the Trump administration approved in the first three years they were in office,&#8221; Hoyer <a href="https://www.realclearpolitics.com/video/2022/05/13/steny_hoyer_were_at_war_forget_about_the_politics_and_focus_on_the_enemy.html">said</a> on Friday from the House floor in response to Republican statements about Biden’s energy policies. He later added, “I don&#8217;t know how the [Republican leader] rationalizes his comments about Biden constricting petroleum production…”
&#8220;It is unfortunate that in a time of war, that we spend all the time blaming our own president,&#8221; he continued. &#8220;It is unfortunate that when the Europeans put themselves — over the objections of numerous administrations — in a place where they had a dependence on Russia, Russia has no leverage over us.&#8221;
&#8220;I wish we&#8217;d get off this and really focus on the enemy,&#8221; Hoyer remarked. 
&#8220;I know there&#8217;s a lot of politics here, but we&#8217;re at war,&#8221; he remarked again. &#8220;We need to produce energy.&#8221;

While the U.S. has not technically entered the war on Ukraine&#8217;s behalf, the federal government has supplied billions of dollars to Ukraine in the form of aid since Russia invaded in February. 
Currently, the Senate is negotiating a $40 billion aid package that will be officially voted upon next week. As The Daily Wire reported, Senator Rand Paul (R-KY) temporarily <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/we-cannot-save-ukraine-by-dooming-the-u-s-economy-rand-paul-blocks-immediate-vote-on-billion-dollar-ukraine-package">blocked</a> that bill Thursday while requesting that an amendment be added to it that would allow an Inspector General to oversee how that money would be spent.

House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D-MD) slammed members of his party Tuesday for pushing a “false narrative” about Israel and pushing policies that would empower terrorists.
Hoyer said that “extremists” in the Democratic Party are undermining the United States’ relationship with its ally Israel. The House majority leader also condemned Hamas, a Palestinian terror group in the Gaza Strip, for using civilians in Gaza as human shields against Israeli counterstrikes.
“I continue to be saddened by the loss of innocent civilian life in Israel and Gaza occurring as a result of Hamas’s ongoing rocket attacks. Israel has the right to defend itself, as any nation does when its civilians are targeted by violence from a terrorist organization whose aim is nothing short of mass murder and the destruction of the world’s only Jewish state,” Hoyer said in a <a href="https://www.majorityleader.gov/content/hoyer-statement-situation-israel-and-gaza">statement</a>.
“Democrats have, for decades, been defenders of Israel because the Jewish state’s rebirth was an inspiring act of progressive justice,” he continued. “We must not allow extremists to hijack important discussions about securing a better future for Israelis and Palestinians by promoting a false narrative that denies the historical and unbroken connection of the Jewish people to their ancestral homeland.”
Hoyer called for a “durable” ceasefire, adding that Hamas must be held responsible for the deaths of civilians it put at risk by bombing Israel and by hiding its weapons and bases inside civilian areas.
“No one should have to live under the threat of attack, and Hamas must be held accountable for its war crimes, which include the use of civilian infrastructure for launching its attacks against civilian targets,” Hoyer said. “Hamas bears responsibility for civilian casualties on both sides of the border as a result.”
The House leader resisted calls within his party to condition military financial aid to Israel led by progressive lawmakers such as Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY). Hoyer said such conditions “would only embolden Hamas.”
On Wednesday, Ocasio-Cortez <a href="https://ocasio-cortez.house.gov/media/press-releases/ocasio-cortez-pocan-tlaib-lead-joint-resolution-block-weapon-sales-netanyahu">partnered</a> with fellow progressives such as Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) in an attempt to block the U.S. from selling weapons to Israel. The progressive lawmakers said that U.S. arms and aid should be used as leverage to force Israel to “respect basic Palestinian rights.”
In statements opposing the sale of U.S. weapons to Israel, Ocasio-Cortez and Omar accused Israel of committing “war crimes” in Gaza by killing Palestinian civilians.
Israeli has launched numerous strikes against pseudo-civilian targets such as hospitals and schools in Gaza because Hamas militants have set up military installations in those places and used civilians as human shields. Israel has taken a number of steps to limit civilian casualties in these strikes, such as using “knock bombs” to warn people of an imminent airstrike, dropping pamphlets, or calling Palestinians and telling them to evacuate.
The United States has provided regular military aid to Israel for decades since at least 1973, according to the <a href="https://jinsa.org/jinsa_report/dangerous-conditions-the-case-against-threatening-israels-qualitative-military-edge/">Jewish Institute for National Security of America</a>. Under former President Bill Clinton, the United States and Israel signed the first of three memoranda of understanding which said that the U.S. would provide military financial aid to Israel and in return, Israel would spend most of those funds on weapons and technology from the United States, supporting U.S. jobs. In the latest agreement signed under former President Barack Obama in 2016, Israel agreed to spend all of the U.S. aid on U.S. products.

House Democratic leadership gave in to their caucus Tuesday, and now say that they will not return to work on May 4th as expected and, instead, will delay the next session of Congress indefinitely.
&#8216;House Majority Leader announces the US House will not be returning on May 4, as initially planned,&#8221; NBC News reported Tuesday morning, just after Politico reported that the House planned to come back into session as expected, despite something of a Democratic rebellion. &#8220;After speaking with the House physician on Monday, [House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D-MD)] said &#8216;we made a judgment that we will not come back next week.'&#8221;
&#8220;The House will not come back to Washington next week, House Majority Leader Steny H. Hoyer told reporters Tuesday, reversing an announcement he made on a Democratic Caucus conference call the previous day,&#8221; NBC continued, in an additional story.
&#8220;The change of course comes as members expressed concern about returning to Washington while some areas in the region are developing into coronavirus hot spots,&#8221; the outlet said. &#8220;Hoyer said the decision to delay the return, which had been briefly scheduled for May 4, came after he talked with the Capitol physician, who said he recommended against taking the risk involved in members returning.&#8221;
On a phone call with Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) Monday, Democrats, led by Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-FL) voiced their opposition to returning May 4th, &#8220;railing&#8221; against the decision, <a href="https://www.politico.com/newsletters/huddle/2020/04/28/congress-plans-its-capitol-comeback-489056?cid=su_tw_hu">according to Politico</a>. Many suggested Members of Congress, many of whom are elderly, would be at risk of contracting the virus by returning to Washington, D.C, which could become a virus &#8220;hot zone.&#8221;
Others objected to leaving the families, especially when childcare is largely unavailable and day cares are closed. Although Washington, D.C. is on the verge of lifting its stay-at-home order, states where many Members reside while at work, like Virginia and Maryland, have extended their stay-at-home orders well beyond that. Virgina announced, earlier this week, that parts of the state could be locked down for as long as two years.
The Capitol physician, Politico added, also seems to believe things will take years to go back to normal in the nation&#8217;s capital: &#8220;the Capitol physician warned a group of lawmakers that they might be &#8216;years&#8217; away from normalcy.&#8221;
But, <a href="https://hotair.com/archives/ed-morrissey/2020/04/28/breaking-hoyer-reverses-says-house-wont-return-next-week/">as Hot Air points out</a>, buried deep in NBC News&#8217; story is, perhaps, the real reason that Democrats aren&#8217;t quite ready to return to work: the fourth coronavirus relief package, which they&#8217;ve been working on during their month in recess, isn&#8217;t ready for prime time.
Another reason the House decided to delay its return is because the chamber is not ready to vote on the next coronavirus relief bill, Hoyer said.
“We will not come back next week, but we hope to come back very soon to consider the CARES 2 legislation,” Hoyer told reporters. He added &#8220;that the House will take &#8216;the time to get that in order&#8217; before returning.&#8221;
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has already signaled that there will be a partisan battle over the bill, which is expected to cst $1.1 trillion, and may include bailouts of state and local governments. McConnell has said he does not want to burden taxpayers with more debt if it could further imperil the shaky American economy, and the Senate Majority Leader has been adamant that he will not allow Republicans to support a bill that bails out state like Illinois, whose massive debt long predates the coronavirus lockdowns.

House Democrats say they won&#8217;t return to Washington, D.C., the first week of May, even though House leadership has set May 4th as Congress&#8217; official date of reopening, and has declared the work of the federal government &#8220;essential&#8221; for the purposes of breaking coronavirus-related lockdowns.
<a href="https://www.politico.com/news/2020/04/27/senate-will-return-to-washington-next-week-211758">Politico reports</a> that key Democrats &#8220;railed&#8221; against Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), when she reminded them that the House was due to gavel back into session May 4th, calling the date &#8220;too dangerous,&#8221; especially for the many elderly members of the House Democratic caucus.
&#8220;Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-FL) said returning next week would be &#8216;dangerous,&#8217; according to multiple Democrats on the call,&#8221; Politico said Tuesday. &#8220;Other members also spoke up including Reps. Lucille Roybal-Allard (D-CA.), Susan Wild (D-PA) and Veronica Escobar (D-TX), with some asking how they were expected to take care of their families — many without childcare at home — and return to Washington for an extended stay.&#8221;
Republicans, on the other hand, have been pushing for the House to come back into session on the timeline set months ago, before coronavirus became a threat, suggesting that Members of Congress are, perhaps, the most &#8220;essential workers&#8221; in the United States, and stressing that, if many Americans can withstand working through the coronavirus pandemic, federal lawmakers can, too.
Pelosi, House Democratic minority leader Rep. Steny Hoyer (D-MD), and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) now all seem to agree: Congress will return to session on May 4th, regardless of objection.
Hoyer and McConnell both say that safeguards are in place for Congress&#8217; more vunlerable Members, especially those who are elderly or infirm.
&#8220;We’re going to take whatever safeguards the Capitol physician recommends that we engage in and we believe we can do that safely,” McConnell told Politico. “Look, it doesn’t make sense for the Senate to sit on the sidelines while a lot of other people are going to work everyday and trying to get us through this.&#8221;
Hoyer says that legislators will vote in shifts so that they can maintain &#8220;social distancing,&#8221; and Congress will stagger votes so that the chambers aren&#8217;t packed with people.
McConnell and several other key Republicans never left Washington, D.C., and have been working out deals with key Democrats to extend coronavirus-related relief programs. Until last week, though, Pelosi and Hoyer seemed uninterested in returning to work as soon as possible.
Now, the House and Senate are likely gearing up to battle over a fourth coronavirus relief package. Pelosi, who is the lead author of the $1 trillion &#8220;CARES Act 2,&#8221; as she&#8217;s called it in interviews, believes the package must be passed within days of Congress returning to work. McConnell, however, says he is &#8220;calling time&#8221; on expensive bailouts, in case the spending further imperils the already struggling American economy.

Democrats Rebel, Won’t Return To Work May 4th, Say Its ‘Too Dangerous’ To Reopen Congress

House Democrats said Tuesday that they do not plan to return to work from their spring recess until at least May 4th, &#8220;absent an emergency&#8221; that requires Members to return to Washington, D.C. &#8212; and despite claims, made Monday, that Republicans are the ones holding up additional coronavirus relief for small businesses.
&#8220;The chamber previously expected lawmakers to return on April 20 after an extended absence. It is unclear if the Senate, which is expected to return to the Capitol next week, will follow suit,&#8221; <a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2020/04/13/coronavirus-update-house-wont-return-to-washington-until-may.html">CNBC reported Tuesday</a>.
Majority Leader Steny Hoyer&#8217;s (D-MD) issued a statement to House Democrats Tuesday clearing the House&#8217;s floor schedule for the rest of April in response to measures designed to slow or halt the spread of coronavirus in the nation&#8217;s capital.
&#8220;Members are advised that absent an emergency, the House is not expected to meet prior to Monday, May 4, 2020,&#8221; the statement read. &#8220;Members are further advised that if the House is required to take action on critical legislation related to the coronavirus response or other legislative priorities, Members will be given sufficient notice to return to Washington, DC.&#8221;
The short statement does not specify what is considered &#8220;critical legislation,&#8221; but so far, few Democrats seem to believe &#8220;legislation related to the coronavirus response&#8221; falls within that category.
Congress left for its spring recess at the end of March after passing a $2.2 trillion coronavirus relief package that included direct payments to American taxpayers and a $350 billion fund &#8212; the Paycheck Protection Program &#8212; for low-interest and forgivable loans directed at small businesses shuttered by ongoing coronavirus lockdowns.
Last week, though, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY), who crafted that relief legislation, told House and Senate Democrats that urgent action is needed on a $250 billion supplement to the Paycheck Protection Program, as banks charged with handling the admissions and lending processes are already reporting running out of designated funds.
McConnell told colleagues that he&#8217;d prefer to pass the supplemental aid with unanimous consent in both the House and Senate and Republicans believe the need is so great that it could be a simple, clean bill. Democrats, including Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) disagreed, telling a press conference last week that, despite clear indications that the fund is running out of money, Democrats have &#8220;no data&#8221; that indicates a supplemental relief bill is necessary.
Instead, Pelosi and Schumer proposed a more complex piece of legislation, adding billions in handouts to hospitals, healthcare facilities, and city and state governments, all of whom received aid in the third coronavirus relief package and are eligible to recieve additional funds in a fourth coronavirus relief package, currently being drafted by a Pelosi-run committee in the House.
On Monday, the same Democrats issued a warning to the GOP to stop &#8220;posturing&#8221; on the now-weighty bill.
“We have real problems facing this country, and it’s time for the Republicans to quit the political posturing by proposing bills they know will not pass either chamber and get serious and work with us towards a solution,” Pelosi and Schumer said in a letter.
Republicans called the threat &#8220;reckless,&#8221; according to CNBC, and are working to pass the clean supplemental bill.

House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D-MD) clarified on Wednesday that Democrats are not planning on arresting the members of President Donald Trump&#8217;s administration who do not comply with congressional subpoenas, disproving a claim that freshman Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-MI) has been telling her constituents.
&#8220;We&#8217;ve made a judgment that we want the American people to understand that we are pursuing not arbitrary action, but considered and thoughtful action,&#8221; Hoyer told reporters, according to <a href="https://www.washingtonexaminer.com/news/congress/steny-hoyer-arresting-reluctant-trump-witnesses-sounds-appealing-but-wont-happen">The Washington Examiner</a>. And while he noted that imprisoning members of the White House &#8220;sounds appealing,&#8221; it is not an action that House Democrats will ultimately carry out.
&#8220;I don&#8217;t mean to say that inherent contempt is by definition arbitrary, [but] it may be perceived as arbitrary,&#8221; he continued, referring to the oldest of three strategies that Congress can use to enforce subpoenas.
Tlaib has boasted about the possibility that her caucus will jail the president&#8217;s allies in an escalating effort to force White House officials to comply. The move, referred to as inherent contempt, is a power that the legislature has not used since 1935.
&#8220;Let me tell you, this is pretty &#8212; and this is the last caucus conversation we had. Do you know this is really unprecedented? This is the worst time we&#8217;ve ever had a situation like this,&#8221; Tlaib said during a town hall earlier in October. &#8220;So they&#8217;re trying to figure out &#8212; no joke &#8212; they&#8217;re trying to figure out, &#8216;Well, is it the D.C. police that goes and gets them?&#8217; No, no.&#8221;
&#8220;What are we hoping? I mean, I&#8217;m not in those kinds of conversations, but I&#8217;m asking, like, you know, what happens? And they&#8217;re like, &#8216;Well, Rashida, we&#8217;re trying to figure it out ourselves because this is uncharted territory,'&#8221; she continued. &#8220;No, I&#8217;m telling you that they&#8217;re trying to be like, &#8216;Well, where are we going to put them? Where are we going to hold them?&#8217; No, I mean those are the kinds of things they&#8217;re trying to tread carefully.&#8221;
Accordingly, the House of Representatives voted 230-198 in July to hold Attorney General William Barr and Secretary of Commerce Wilbur Ross in contempt of Congress for defying congressional subpoenas. While it was only the second time in history that a sitting Cabinet member was held in criminal contempt, it was not, as Tlaib has asserted, unprecedented — former President Barack Obama&#8217;s attorney general, Eric Holder, was held in contempt after he refused to turn over documents related to the &#8220;Operation Fast and Furious&#8221; gunrunning scandal.
&#8220;Let me tell you, Mr. Giuliani will be held accountable to the Congress, as we will hold every other individual,&#8221; Hoyer added, referring to Trump&#8217;s personal attorney, who only a day earlier officially refused to comply with a congressional subpoena.
Trump responded to Tlaib&#8217;s repeated suggestion to jail his allies by referring to the Michigan congresswoman as &#8220;a despicable human being.&#8221; Tlaib, however, is most well-known for her vulgar demands to impeach the president. Only hours after Tlaib was sworn into Congress in January 2018, she was recorded vowing to go after Trump. Referring to the president, the freshman Democrat shouted to a crowd of her supporters that she is going to go in and &#8220;impeach the motherf***er.&#8221;
