The unpopular spinoff series “Star Trek: Starfleet Academy” has been canceled after airing just one season, per <a href="https://variety.com/2026/tv/news/star-trek-starfleet-academy-canceled-season-2-1236696816/">Variety</a>.
The show was picked up by Paramount+ in 2023 and was renewed for a second season before the first one premiered, the outlet noted. “Starfleet Academy” earned high praise from critics but was largely trashed by the audience, in part due to its outlandish leftist elements.
This included the first-ever gay Klingon in “Star Trek” history and a drag queen, among other elements that made it off-the-charts woke. 
Unsurprisingly, the series never gained traction and failed to capture the audience it needed to survive. Variety noted that “Starfleet Academy” never cracked Nielsen’s Top 10 streaming rankings during its debut season earlier this year. The second season is already filmed and will be released on an undisclosed date.
“People hated it because it was an attempt to shove more woke nonsense down our throats. It takes a special kind of stupid to ruin Star Trek,” one commenter on X <a href="https://x.com/h2av8tor/status/2036280551137747082">wrote</a> in response to the cancellation news.
“Damn, they managed to check all of the woke boxes, which of course creates a show few people will want to watch. And no, it&#8217;s not because people are racists or don&#8217;t like gay people, it&#8217;s because these types of shows are contrived, preachy, and insult the intelligence of millions of viewers. Why anyone invests in this garbage is beyond me,” a second person agreed.
Even some leftists said it was terrible. 
“I&#8217;m a dirty woke liberal and I didn&#8217;t watch it/am glad it&#8217;s dead for one simple reason: It&#8217;s just not Trek,” another reply <a href="https://x.com/isthisnessicary/status/2036444933658198431">said</a>. “Trek has always been woke: first interracial kiss, the right/left black side racists, Riker and Soren, Measure of a Man. The fact that it&#8217;s ‘luxury gay space communism.’”
Series co-showrunners and executive producers Alex Kurtzman and Noga Landau reacted to the cancellation with an open letter. 
“Whether you’re working on ‘Star Trek’ or part of the marvel that is ‘Star Trek’ fandom — its very heart, soul, and conscience —the joy comes from adventuring across boundaries of time, space, and the humanly possible in service to Roddenberry’s transformative vision of the future,” they wrote in part. 
“That incomparable vision was fueled by an inexhaustible optimism. ‘Star Trek’ places its bet on the best in human nature. It dares to imagine a society of ‘infinite diversity in infinite combinations,’ free of war, hate, poverty, disease, and repression, and dedicated to the spirit of scientific inquiry and respect for all life, whether carbon or silicon-based, green-skinned or blue.”
CBS Studios and Paramount+ also released a joint statement. “We’re incredibly proud of the ambition, passion, and creativity that went into bringing ‘Star Trek: Starfleet Academy’ to life,” it said. 
“The series introduced audiences to a bold new group of characters, welcomed familiar faces, and expanded the ‘Star Trek’ universe in exciting new ways. We’re grateful to Alex Kurtzman, Noga Landau, Gaia Violo, and the entire cast and crew who pushed storytelling boundaries in the spirit of Gene Roddenberry’s vision. We look forward to sharing the upcoming second and final season with everyone, and continuing to celebrate the cast, crew, and all that was accomplished with this series.”

The newest “Star Trek” series is apparently so awful that it got the original Captain Kirk to see eye-to-eye with one of President Donald Trump’s closest advisers.
White House Deputy Chief of Staff and Homeland Security adviser Stephen Miller responded to a brief clip of the new Paramount+ series &#8220;Star Trek: Starfleet Academy&#8221; in an X post, arguing that the only way for producers to save the show would be to give full creative control to actor William Shatner.
&#8220;Tragic. But it’s not too late for @paramountplus to save the franchise,&#8221; Miller said. &#8220;Step 1: Reconcile with @WilliamShatner and give him total creative control.&#8221;
Shatner <a href="https://x.com/WilliamShatner/status/2013275829464383866">responded</a> several days later, saying, &#8220;I am so on the same page with you @StephenM&lt;! The fact that they have not [cured] Hyperopia by the 32rd Century is an abysmal oversight on the writers!&#8221;
&#8220;Also @paramountplus needs to up the budget because I’m sure that a well oiled organization like Starfleet in the distant future could afford more than one pair of glasses for at least this hyperopic bridge crew,&#8221; Shatner continued, adding, &#8220;Do they pass the glasses around while piloting the ship? Shame on the line producers! That is what you meant, right?&#8221;
&#8220;I am ready to assume command of the series! Call me!&#8221; he concluded.
Shatner was written out of the franchise in the 1994 film &#8220;Star Trek: Generations&#8221; – a move he&#8217;s said was made because producers wanted to move on to solely using the &#8220;Star Trek: The Next Generation&#8221; cast led by British actor Patrick Stewart&#8217;s Jean-Luc Picard.
Shatner said that he was told before filming began for &#8220;Generations&#8221; that Captain Kirk was going to die in the film whether he participated or not – and so he opted for an onscreen death that allowed him a heroic exit.
&#8220;So the producer said, &#8216;We&#8217;re going to kill Kirk because we think that The Next Generation will make more money at the box office,'&#8221; he explained.
Three more movies followed with &#8220;The Next Generation&#8221; cast, and the series has since rebooted with three more films, starring Chris Pine as Captain Kirk.

Kirk in the &#8220;Star Trek&#8221; franchise — spoke to the <a href="https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/movies/movie-features/william-shatner-interview-star-trek-career-1235851602/">Hollywood Reporter</a> about his most famous role and whether he would be up for reprising it, if the right opportunity presented itself. 
&#8220;Leonard [Nimoy] made his own decision on doing a cameo [in J.J. Abrams&#8217; 2009 &#8216;Star Trek&#8217;],&#8221; Shatner said. &#8220;He&#8217;s there for a moment, and it&#8217;s more a stunt that Spock appears in a future.&#8221;
&#8220;If they wrote something that wasn&#8217;t a stunt that involved Kirk, who&#8217;s 50 years older now, and it was something that was genuinely added to the lore of &#8216;Star Trek,&#8217; I would definitely consider it,&#8221; he added.

Despite being short-lived, the show earned a cult following and eventually spawned a movie franchise and numerous subsequent TV series like &#8220;Star Trek: The Next Generation,&#8221; &#8220;Star Trek: Enterprise,&#8221; and &#8220;Star Trek: Deep Space Nine,&#8221; among many others.

Shatner also spoke about those various &#8220;Star Trek&#8221; series that have come along since his was canceled and explained why he thought the creator of the original sci-fi series, Gene Roddenberry, wouldn&#8217;t like them at all.
&#8220;He was in the military, and he was a policeman,&#8221; the famous actor said. &#8220;So there was this militaristic vision of ‘You don&#8217;t make out with a fellow soldier.’&#8217;There are strict rules and you abide by the rules. Around that, [the writers] had to write the drama. But within that was the discipline of &#8216;This is the way a ship works.'&#8221;
&#8220;Well, as &#8216;Star Trek&#8217; progressed, that ethos has been forgotten [in more recent shows],&#8221; he added. &#8220;I sometimes laugh and talk about the fact that I think Gene is twirling in his grave. &#8216;No, no, you can’t make out with the lady soldier!&#8221;
In 2021, Shatner famously went from playing a character who had ventured out of our world to being a real-live spaceman when he became the oldest person to travel to space as part of the crew with Jeff Bezos&#8217; Blue Origin spacecraft.
Speaking after he returned to earth, Shatner became emotional talking about how vast and empty it was outside of our planet.
&#8220;I was weeping uncontrollably for reasons I didn&#8217;t know,&#8221; Shatner told THR.  &#8220;It was my fear of what&#8217;s happening to Earth. I could see how small it was. It’s a rock with paper-thin air. You&#8217;ve got rock and 2 miles of air, and that’s all that we have, and we&#8217;re f***ing it up. And, that dramatically, I saw it in that moment.&#8221;

Actor William Shatner scolded members of parliament in the European Union over reports that they planned to address the &#8220;gendered language&#8221; in the iconic introduction to his science fiction fan-favorite television series: &#8220;Star Trek.&#8221;
GB News <a href="https://www.gbnews.com/politics/eu-news-gender-neutral-language#" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reported on the initiative</a>, which was apparently inspired by a 61-page document — titled &#8220;Toolkit on Gender-sensitive Communication&#8221; — which was published by the European Institute for Gender Equality.
In addition to advising against the use of phrases like &#8220;no-man&#8217;s land&#8221; — suggesting &#8220;unclaimed territory&#8221; as an alternative — the document addressed the problematic goals of the Galactic Federation, namely &#8220;to boldly go where no man has gone before.&#8221;
According to the group&#8217;s findings, statements such as that one created an environment where &#8220;women may be subject to invisibility or omission.&#8221;
Shatner, who delivered the line as part of the introduction of each &#8220;Star Trek&#8221; episode, was not convinced.
&#8220;Presentism at work yet again,&#8221; Shatner began by registering his complaint about the attempt to apply today&#8217;s values to a show that was created in a very different time and culture.
&#8220;Why start at Trek?&#8221; the actor asked in his X post, suggesting that there were certainly more important historically significant documents that should be addressed first.
&#8220;Isn’t it better to start at the beginning and redo foundation material such as the Magna Carta, religious writings, works of Shakespeare before worrying about a silly TV show opening that reflects social commentary of the time?&#8221; he asked. &#8220;If people are offended by 6 seconds of dialogue recorded in 1966 without a modicum of understanding of the social issues at the time there’s bigger issues that they need to deal with first — like educating themselves.&#8221;

Hollywood <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/celebrities" target="_blank" rel="noopener">actor</a> Gary Graham, best known for his roles in &#8220;<a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/star-trek" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Star Trek</a>: Enterprise&#8221; and &#8220;Alien Nation,&#8221; died at the age of 73 from cardiac arrest, according to a statement from his wife.
Graham was beloved by fans for his Star Trek role as Ambassador Soval from 2001 to 2005. He also played the character Tanis in an episode of &#8220;Star Trek: Voyager&#8221; in 1995, and Ragnar in both &#8220;Star Trek: Of Gods and Men&#8221; and &#8220;Star Trek: Renegades.&#8221;
&#8220;I always say he was my knight in shining armor, and I was his port in the storm,&#8221; Becky Graham, his wife of nearly 25 years, said. &#8220;He was loved by many.”
Graham’s ex-wife Susan Lavelle, who is also the mother of his daughter, shared her feelings about the tragedy of his death with a Facebook <a href="https://www.facebook.com/susanashleylavelle/posts/pfbid0XTf8xMGFeD96Ehnk6a8X7RcKQYDxdHvvm3S82J24FX3eaNwtVo3Uax6H4SvQW3YKl?ref=embed_post" target="_blank" rel="noopener">post</a>.
“It is with deep profound sadness to say that Gary Graham, my ex husband, amazing actor and father of our beautiful only child together, Haylee Graham, has passed away today. We are completely devastated… especially our daughter,” she wrote.
“I met Gary when I was just 20 years old and he was one half of the star duo on the tv series, Alien Nation. But he had already been in movies like  ‘All the Right Moves’ with Tom Cruise. Of course, Gary has many more credits.”
“Gary was funny, sarcastic sense of humor but kind, fought for what he believed in, a devout Christian and was so proud of his daughter, Haylee,” she added. “This was sudden so please pray for our daughter as she navigates through this thing called grief. Fly high into the heavens Gar! Thank you for our journey and thank you for the gifts you left me in acting, my love of horses and most importantly, our daughter.”
The actor had a Hollywood career spanning five decades beginning in the 1970s. He has appeared in more than 38 TV roles and was also in more than 40 movies, acting opposite some of the biggest names in Hollywood from Bruce Willis to Tom Cruise.
Graham also loved music, playing in several bands during his lifetime. He was also a contributor to Breitbart News. Hollywood shines a little less brightly without a person of good character and great talent like Graham in it.

The household name celebrities will travel to &#8220;outer space&#8221; where they will live, eat and sleep on a space station that simulates life under the conditions of the red planet, producers said.
The contestants will also have to make alliances, strategize and indulge in some skulduggery to be the last &#8220;celebronaut&#8221; standing, the outlet noted.

The &#8220;Ghost Rider&#8221; star explained how he &#8220;grew up watching [William] Shatner&#8221; and thought the new generation of actors in the &#8220;Star Trek&#8221; franchise like Chris Pine were &#8220;terrific in the movies.&#8221;
&#8220;I think the movies are outstanding,&#8221; Cage shared. &#8220;I like the political and the sociological [messages]. To me, what science fiction is really all about and why it&#8217;s such an important genre is that really you can say whatever you want, however you feel.&#8221;
&#8220;You put it on a different planet, you put it in a different time or in the future, and without people just jumping on you, you can really express your thoughts like Orwell or whomever in the science-fiction format,&#8221; the actor added. &#8220;And Star Trek really embraced that. The ashes of Nichelle Nichols, who played Lieutenant Nyota Uhura in the original &#8220;Star Trek&#8221; television series and died last month at the age of 89, will rest among the stars after launching into deep space aboard a rocket later this year from Cape Canaveral, Florida.
Celestis, Inc, a company that conducts space burials by sending cremated human remains into the cosmos, <a href="https://spaceref.com/space-commerce/nichelle-nichols-finds-a-final-resting-place-among-the-stars/">said</a> Thursday that a symbolic portion of Nichols&#8217; ashes and a DNA sample would travel between 150 million to 300 million kilometers on board the Vulcan rocket from United Launch Alliance.
&#8220;We are truly honored to add a legendary actress, activist, and educator to the Enterprise Flight manifest,&#8221; Charles M. Chafer, Co-Founder and CEO of Celestis, Inc., said. &#8220;Now our Enterprise Flight will have on board the person who most completely embodied the vision of Star Trek as a diverse, inclusive, and exploring universe.&#8221;
On a mission to well beyond the Earth-Moon system into interplanetary space, Nichol&#8217;s remains joins 200 flight capsules containing ashes, DNA samples, and messages of greetings from other participants, which includes a &#8220;once-in-lifetime&#8221; Star Trek reunion flight with the show&#8217;s creator Gene Roddenberry, his wife and &#8220;First Lady of Star Trek&#8221; Majel Barrett Roddenberry, beloved Star Trek actor James &#8220;Scotty&#8221; Doohan, and VFX maestro and Hollywood icon Douglas Trumbull.
After lift-off, Vulcan will first set Astrobotic&#8217;s Peregrine lunar lander on a trajectory to rendezvous with the Moon before entering an orbit around the Sun, becoming humanity&#8217;s furthermost reaching outpost, which will then be renamed the Enterprise Station.
Kyle Johnson, Nichols&#8217; son, said he would submit his DNA to allow him to take the journey with his mother.
&#8220;My only regret is that I cannot share this eternal tribute standing beside my mother at the launch,&#8221; Johnson said, adding that she would be &#8220;profoundly honored&#8221; for the unique experience.
He encouraged her fans to join the family vicariously by contributing their thoughts, affections, and memories through email to be launched with her on this flight.
Nichols became the first black woman to play a major role in a television series. She planned to leave after the show&#8217;s first season ended in 1966 but ultimately stayed after Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. helped change her mind.
At the height of the Civil Rights Movement during the 1960s, Nichols&#8217; performance as the communications officer aboard Star Trek&#8217;s USS Enterprise paved the way and broke barriers for black women in Hollywood and on network television.
After the original series concluded in 1969, Nichols&#8217; worldwide influence and admiration from fans gained the attention of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA).
NASA officials appointed Nichols as the administration&#8217;s recruiter in chief and spokesperson &#8220;to bridge the gap between their initial responses for mission specialists and the overwhelming results achieved in female and minority candidates for the Space Shuttle, current, and future space flight programs.&#8221;
&#8220;Nichelle Nichols was a trailblazing actress, advocate, and dear friend to NASA.&#8221; NASA Administrator Bill Nelson <a href="https://www.nasa.gov/feature/nichelle-nichols-helped-nasa-break-boundaries-on-earth-and-in-space/">said</a> shortly after the actress passed away. &#8220;At a time when black women were seldom seen on screen, Nichelle&#8217;s portrayal as Nyota Uhura on Star Trek held a mirror up to America that strengthened civil rights.&#8221;
Nelson said Nichols&#8217; &#8220;advocacy transcended television and transformed NASA.&#8221;
&#8220;Nichelle&#8217;s mission is NASA&#8217;s mission,&#8221; Nelson added.
The Enterprise Flight <a href="https://enterprise-flight.com/">website</a> where fans can include a message to float in space with Nichols remains includes a quote from her before her passing.
“Star Trek represented, and still does represent, the future we can have, a future that is beyond the petty squabbles we are dealing with here on Earth, now as much as ever, and we are able to devote ourselves to the betterment of all humankind by doing what we do so well: explore,&#8221; Nichols said. &#8220;This kind of a future isn’t impossible – and we need to all rethink our priorities to really bring that vision to life.”

Nichelle Nichols, who played Nyota Uhura in &#8220;Star Trek: The Original Series,&#8221; has passed away at 89 years old, according to a statement from her family.
&#8220;Last night, my mother, Nichelle Nichols, succumbed to natural causes and passed away,&#8221; her son Kyle Johnson wrote in a post shared on social media Sunday afternoon. &#8220;Her light however, like the ancient galaxies now being seen for the first time, will remain for us and future generations to enjoy, learn from, and draw inspiration. Hers was a life well lived and as such a model for us all.&#8221;
&#8220;I, and the rest of our family, would appreciate your patience and forbearance as we grieve her loss until we can recover sufficiently to speak further,&#8221; he continued. &#8220;Her services will be for family members and the closest of her friends and we request that her and our privacy be respected.&#8221;
Nichols was the first black woman to ever play a major role on a television series. She <a href="https://www.yahoo.com/entertainment/nichelle-nichols-lt-uhura-star-185825252.html">planned</a> to leave after the show’s first season ended in 1966 but ultimately stayed after Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. helped change her mind.
“‘You cannot, you cannot…for the first time on television, we will be seen as we should be seen every day, as intelligent, quality, beautiful, people who can sing dance, and can go to space, who are professors, lawyers,&#8217;” Nichols recalled telling King in an interview published decades later. “‘If you leave, that door can be closed because your role is not a black role, and is not a female role, he can fill it with anybody even an alien.&#8217;”

The &#8220;Shaun of the Dead&#8221; actor went on to note that he had said some things he regretted — and later apologized for — about the &#8220;<a href="https://dailywire.com/news/racist-sexist-bigots-the-beatdown-of-star-wars-own-fanbase/">Star Wars</a>&#8221; prequels, particularly the widely-panned character Jar-Jar Binks.
&#8220;I mean, I’m out of it now … I’ve apologized for the things I said about, you know, Jar Jar Binks. Cause of course there was a f***ing actor involved there. He was getting a lot of flack and … It was a human being. And because it got a lot of hate, he suffered, you know, and I feel terrible about being part of that,&#8221; Pegg said.
Actor Ahmed Best — the human behind the CGI character — <a href="https://www.bbc.com/news/entertainment-arts-44708983">said</a> that the backlash got so bad that he considered suicide. Sharing a photo with his young son in 2018, Best said, &#8220;20 years next year I faced a media backlash that still affects my career today. This was the place I almost ended my life &#8230; It&#8217;s still hard to talk about. I survived and now this little guy is my gift for survival.&#8221;
Pegg then pivoted to compare the franchise to &#8220;<a href="https://dailywire.com/news/star-trek-strange-new-wokes/">Star Trek</a>,&#8221; where he played the role of Montgomery &#8220;Scotty&#8221; Scott in the recent series reboot.
&#8220;I find the &#8216;Star Trek&#8217; fans have always been very, very inclusive, you know, &#8216;Star Trek’s about diversity. It has been since 1966, it always was,&#8221; he explained. &#8220;There’s no sort of like, ‘Oh, you’re suddenly being woke.’ No, &#8216;Star Trek&#8217; was woke from the beginning, you know? … This is massively progressive. &#8216;Star Wars&#8217; suddenly there’s, there’s a little bit more diversity and everyone’s kicking off about it. And it’s, it’s really sad.&#8221;
