Cincinnati Reds third baseman Eugenio Suarez got a surprise from his teammates after he took a few days off to take the United States naturalization test.
Suarez was recruited out of Venezuela to play first for the Detroit Tigers and then the Reds, with stops at several other Major League Baseball teams before he returned to Cincinnati in February of 2026 — and he missed two games in early September to finally become a United States citizen.
His teammates responded by changing his walk-up song to Lee Greenwood&#8217;s &#8220;God Bless the USA (I&#8217;m Proud To Be An American).&#8221;

Suarez&#8217;s absence could have been a streak-breaker — he had just come off a hot month, hitting six home runs and driving in 20 in August. He&#8217;d also racked up an impressive .852 OPS (On-base Plus Slugging), and in a sport that thrives on streaks and slumps, taking two games off can be a lot to ask.
But the dates and times for citizenship testing aren&#8217;t decided based on what might be the most convenient for the person taking the test, and Suarez had no choice but to work with the schedule he was given.
Would his hot streak continue after a two-game hiatus? Suarez answered that question decisively, launching a three-run home run later that same game to put the Reds ahead — his second at-bat as a United States citizen.

Cathy Engelbert announced that she will step down as WNBA commissioner at the end of the calendar year as the league remains mired in controversy over transgender participation in women&#8217;s sports.
Engelbert told the <a href="https://apnews.com/article/engelbert-retiring-wnba-commissioner-1cdfcb8a9839e9b84257e68e0791fa46">Associated Press</a> in an interview that she was not pressured to step down by the NBA or WNBA stakeholders, saying the decision was her own. 
“When I first came to the league, I intended to do this for 3½ years,” she said. “The 7½ years exceeded that time. This is a really good time given the financial transformation journey we’ve been on. Getting the collective bargaining agreement done, getting a long-term media rights deal done, getting expansion done.” 
“It’s a good time to hand it off to the next leader to take the ‘W’ into a better phase,” she added. “I’m proud of the team we built and everything we accomplished. A leader knows when it’s time to drop the mic and move on after building a powerhouse team in the league office.”
Engelbert also doubled down on the league’s handling of the transgender debate that has plagued the season, <a href="https://apnews.com/article/engelbert-retiring-wnba-commissioner-1cdfcb8a9839e9b84257e68e0791fa46">maintaining</a> that there are “no current eligibility issues in the WNBA.”
The controversy intensified after former NBA players Enes Kanter Freedom and Royce White <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/former-nba-player-declares-for-wnba-draft?author=Drew+Berkemeyer&amp;category=News&amp;elementPosition=undefined&amp;row=0&amp;rowType=Vertical+List&amp;title=Former+NBA+Player+Declares+For+WNBA+Draft">declared </a>themselves women and eligible for the 2027 WNBA Draft in an effort to challenge the league&#8217;s definition of a woman. The league&#8217;s collective bargaining agreement states that only women can play in the league, but it does not explicitly define the term or explain how the league determines eligibility. 
In August, the WNBA held a meeting involving team presidents and general managers to discuss how to define a woman. “Today’s meeting covered a wide range of topics, including ongoing discussions on transgender athletes and the continued hate and vitriol directed at players online. We will continue to engage all league stakeholders in the coming weeks and months,” a WNBA spokesman said in a statement obtained by The Daily Wire. “We will approach these important conversations thoughtfully and in alignment with the values of our league. There are no immediate eligibility matters affecting the WNBA, and we strongly denounce the bad-faith efforts to use these topics to demean or marginalize others.”
Engelbert says she retires knowing the best is yet to come for the league. “I retire knowing we have built something bigger, stronger and more enduring than we could have imagined. I am grateful to the WNBA and NBA team owners and staff, players, investors, fans and the powerhouse league office staff, who believed in what this league could become. Golf legend Tiger Woods switched his not guilty plea to guilty in court on Wednesday as he faces charges in a DUI case stemming from a rollover crash in Florida earlier this year.
Woods will pay a $1,000 fine and have his driver’s license suspended for five years. The judge stressed that the suspension is intended to protect the public and said there will be no exceptions.
Woods answered “yes” when asked whether he had enough time to speak with his attorney before changing his plea.
Woods officially changed his plea during an appearance in the Martin County, Florida district court. Woods&#8217; girlfriend Vanessa Trump, the ex-wife of Donald Trump Jr., walked with the golfer into the courthouse.
On March 27, Woods sped through a residential neighborhood in his Land Rover in Jupiter Island, Florida, and attempted to pass a truck pulling a trailer, but he clipped the trailer, flipping his SUV. No one was injured in the crash, but Woods caused $5,000 in damage to the truck and trailer, according to the incident report. He initially pled not guilty in the Martin County, Florida, circuit court.
Woods told deputies at the scene of the crash that he was distracted and had looked down at his phone before hitting the trailer, but one deputy described him as “lethargic and slow,” with “bloodshot and glassy” eyes and “extremely dilated” pupils, according to the arrest affidavit.
A breathalyzer test that Woods agreed to take showed no signs of alcohol in his blood system, but the pro golfer refused to take a urine test.
Woods informed officers that he takes “a few” prescription medications, and two hydrocodone pills were found on his person when he was arrested. Hydrocodone, which is typically taken to treat severe pain, is classified as a Schedule II controlled substance by the U.S. government and is among the drugs that the Food and Drug Administration warns “could make driving dangerous.”
“So at this time, I do believe your normal faculties are impaired,” one of the deputies told Woods as she placed handcuffs on him, <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/body-cam-shows-tiger-woods-undergoing-sobriety-test-after-rollover-crash?author=Zach+Jewell&amp;category=News&amp;elementPosition=undefined&amp;row=0&amp;rowType=Vertical+List&amp;title=Body-Cam+Shows+Tiger+Woods+Undergoing+Sobriety+Test+After+Rollover+Crash">bodycam footage</a> shows. “And you’re under the unknown substance, so at this time, you’re under arrest for DUI.”
Prosecutors zeroed in on Woods&#8217; pain medications and secured a subpoena granting them access to the golfer&#8217;s prescription drug records between January 1 of this year through March 27, the date of the crash. After the crash, Woods stepped back from his normal life &#8220;to seek treatment and focus on my health.&#8221;

Former Dallas Cowboys quarterback and CBS Sports broadcaster Tony Romo pleaded no contest Tuesday to an OWI civil offense in Wisconsin, saying chronic pain from multiple back surgeries led to his dependence on pain medication and eventual over-reliance on alcohol.
Romo released a <a href="https://www.instagram.com/p/Dcv-NrGxv-b/">statement</a> following the plea, saying his football career ended earlier than he expected after multiple back surgeries left him with &#8220;constant, debilitating pain.&#8221;
&#8220;That pain led to a dependence on pain medication, and my efforts to get off those medications led to an over-reliance on alcohol” Romo wrote 
“I own this completely,” he added. “None of this is an excuse. These are my failures, and I take responsibility for them.”
&#8220;The past month has been difficult, but it has also been personally significant,&#8221; Romo said. &#8220;It has required me to confront and own my mistakes fully—to the Lord, to myself, to my family, and now to the public.&#8221;
Romo said he is working with a team of doctors to address his health. His driving privileges have been revoked for six months, he must complete an alcohol assessment program, and an ignition interlock device will be installed on his vehicle, according to court records reviewed by <a href="https://www.tmz.com/2026/09/01/tony-romo-says-he-pled-no-contest-to-owi/">TMZ</a>.
Romo also thanked his family, friends and members of the NFL community for their support saying, &#8220;your encouragement has meant more to me than you know.&#8221;
&#8220;As I turn my attention to my health, my family, and, in time, my return to CBS, I kindly ask for privacy during this period,&#8221; he added.
Romo, 46, retired from the NFL in 2017 after 14 seasons with the Cowboys and joined CBS Sports as its lead NFL analyst.

In a heartbreaking twist, teammates revealed that Barnett’s final act on the field was putting points on the board.

Barnett, a junior majoring in business administration, previously led Liberty North High School to a state championship, racking up 1,450 all-purpose yards and 20 touchdowns in his senior year. At William Jewell College, he quickly became a standout star, leading the Cardinals with 366 rushing yards and four touchdowns last season despite missing time due to injury.
Off the field, teammates described Barnett as an inspiring leader and the ultimate go-to guy.

In 2024, the high school sports world was shocked when Connor Kasin, a 17-year-old hockey star from Massapequa High School on Long Island, <a href="https://www.goodmorningamerica.com/news/story/high-school-ice-hockey-player-dies-after-losing-116372421">collapsed on the ice</a> during a game at the Town of Oyster Bay Ice Skating Center in Bethpage, New York, following a sudden medical event. The 46-year-old was stopped while driving southbound on Interstate 43 in Milwaukee after a deputy allegedly observed him passing vehicles on the right and cutting across an area separating interstate traffic from an entrance ramp. According to authorities, Romo performed poorly on standardized field sobriety tests.
<a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/what-tony-romo-told-police-moments-before-he-was-handcuffed">Body camera footage</a> released after the arrest showed Romo telling officers he had been playing in the Wisconsin Amateur Championship golf tournament and was headed to visit his grandparents. Officers later found an open alcoholic beverage in the passenger area of his vehicle.
Romo was arrested, booked, and released. Under Wisconsin law, the matter is being handled as a civil traffic case rather than a criminal offense. A spokesperson for Romo <a href="https://www.foxnews.com/outkick-sports/tony-romo-hit-several-new-citations-after-owi-arrest-further-jeopardizing-return-nfl-broadcasts">said</a> Thursday that the former quarterback “accepts full responsibility” for his actions and is taking steps to resolve the matter.
“Tony accepts full responsibility for his actions and has taken proactive steps to ensure that this isolated civil matter is properly resolved,” the spokesperson said. “We are working with local authorities to bring this matter to a close and we are communicating with CBS about next steps.”
Romo’s status at CBS has remained uncertain since the network placed him on leave “until further notice” on July 31.
CBS Sports President David Berson <a href="https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/49585337/cbs-president-no-table-future-romo-arrest">said</a> earlier this month that the network had no timetable for deciding when — or whether — Romo would return to the broadcast booth. “It’s an evolving situation and therefore we’re still assessing,” Berson said at the time. “There is no timetable or final decision at this time.” Berson also acknowledged that CBS was considering the impact of the controversy on the network’s “image” and “brand.”
J.J. Watt has stepped into Romo’s place alongside Jim Nantz and sideline reporter Tracy Wolfson on CBS’ top NFL broadcast team as the 2026 season approaches. Romo, who joined CBS in 2017 after retiring from the NFL, has been one of the network’s most prominent personalities and signed a reported 10-year, $180 million contract extension in 2020.
His next court appearance is scheduled for Sept. 21.
The additional citations do not represent a new arrest or criminal charges. They do add to the legal matter CBS is already evaluating as the network prepares to begin another NFL season without its longtime lead analyst.

A golf ad scandal just got wilder as Good Good Golf co-founder and CEO Matt Kendrick hinted that he might sue Callaway for throwing his channel under the bus following the creation of an ad that received extensive backlash.
“Interesting that @CallawayGolf asks us to make an ad then approves it then asks us to take the fall then drops us in a coordinated media blitz and covers it up by giving a million dollars away thinking everyone will be ok with it,” Kendrick <a href="https://x.com/mattkendrick/status/2093241737644827008">posted</a> on X early Friday morning.
This comes after he left several replies on social media indicating that he could sue Callaway. In one <a href="https://nypost.com/2026/08/28/sports/good-good-golf-ceo-matt-kendrick-rips-callaway-hints-lawsuit-after-being-dumped-for-shocking-ad/">reply</a>, he wrote that he was “not opposed” when someone suggested that Good Good Golf should “sue Callaway for every single penny they’re owed plus damages.”
Good Good Golf has borne the brunt of the criticism following the <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/golf-channel-responds-to-backlash-over-ad-showing-woman-shoved">airing of an ad</a> promoting a driver made in a collaboration between Good Good Golf and Callaway. One 15-second clip that’s gone viral shows Good Good Golf co-founder Garrett Clark shoving member Alexis Miestowski to the ground. In the video, Clark stands over her and says: “Do not touch my new driver.”
The full version of the ad clearly shows it’s meant to be a riff on the hit horror film “Obsession.” Kendrick originally apologized for the ad, but after being dropped by Callaway, he’s now ripping the large golf equipment company since it also approved the ad before it aired.
“We fully own that we did make a mistake. … As the CEO of the company, the buck stops with me and we should have had better processes in place,” Kendrick <a href="https://www.wsj.com/cmo-today/good-good-golf-and-callaway-apologize-for-scary-ad-826702ba">told</a> the Wall Street Journal on Tuesday. “Obviously the execution missed the mark and didn’t come across the way that we wanted to, and in no way were we trying to make light of or support violence. But it came across that way, and that’s our fault.”
Callaway has also been issuing groveling apologies and pledged $1 million to help fight domestic violence. Company CEO Chip Brewer admitted that Callaway approved the ad but said “should never have happened.”
“In this instance, our content review process was not comprehensive enough,” the company <a href="https://x.com/CallawayGolf/status/2092118421198790965">said</a> in a statement on Thursday. “We have taken appropriate internal corrective actions and significantly strengthened our approval procedures to help ensure this does not happen again.”
Kendrick put Callaway on blast but said other organizations have handled the PR crisis well and treated Good Good Golf fairly. He praised the PGA Tour even after Good Good Golf stepped down as a tour sponsor for an event planned to take place this fall. 
“I will say there are a few groups that have treated us right in this,” Kendrick wrote on X. “The@PGATOUR is top of my list. Props to them.”

Chicago Sky owner Michael Alter doubled down on his decision to bar Enes Kanter Freedom from future WNBA games at Wintrust Arena, claiming the former NBA player was no more entitled to a warning than someone who would &#8220;shoot a gun at someone.&#8221;
Alter told OutKick that Freedom had been identified as a threat when he stood up and approached the court, hands raised — at Sunday&#8217;s game featuring the Indiana Fever and the Chicago Sky — in response to comments shouted at him by Sky guard Natasha Cloud. He went on to suggest that Freedom had not been given a &#8220;warning&#8221; before he was <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/enes-kanter-freedom-banned-from-chicago-sky-home-games-as-potential-threat">ejected from the game</a> because the threat he represented was so serious.

Freedom responded to the wild comparison, saying of Alter, &#8220;I mean, he needs to check himself.&#8221;
The former NBA player — who has declared for the 2027 WNBA draft based on the league&#8217;s vague guidelines regarding gender identification — said he may pursue legal action against the team and its owner.
&#8220;I’m not talking about against the WNBA, but I think against Michael Alter and the Chicago Sky for sure. Like, I don’t think they know what they’re talking about,&#8221; he said. &#8220;Me and my legal team will definitely be taking actions against Chicago Sky and Michael Alter.&#8221;

Police officers in Ohio were stunned after arresting San Francisco 49ers owner John &#8220;Jed&#8221; York in a <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/49ers-owner-busted-in-prostitution-sting-at-trailer-park">prostitution sting</a> at a trailer park.
York, who has an estimated <a href="https://www.beaconjournal.com/story/sports/nfl/2026/08/25/jed-york-49ers-owner-arrested-east-palestine-ohio-net-worth-wife-danielle-belluomini/91453250007/">net worth</a> of around $500 million, was accused of agreeing to pay $140 for sex at the trailer park in East Palestine.
The bodycam footage from the East Palestine Police Department was obtained by TMZ on Wednesday. The footage shows an officer approach York&#8217;s car, asking for his hands and telling him, &#8220;Don&#8217;t move.&#8221; York, wearing a gray New York Yankees t-shirt and shorts, held out his wallet, but the officer immediately unbuckled the NFL team owner and detained him.
&#8220;Can I ask what you&#8217;re doing?&#8221; York asked.
&#8220;What are you doing here?&#8221; the officer replied.
&#8220;Just driving,&#8221; York said.
&#8220;You meeting anybody?&#8221; the Ohio police officer pressed.
&#8220;No.&#8221;
York informed officers that he was driving a rental car. He is originally from Youngstown, Ohio, which is just over 20 miles north of East Palestine.
After York was placed in a cruiser, one of the officers commented on the large amount of cash that they found in his wallet. Police found $160 in cash in York&#8217;s wallet.
&#8220;He&#8217;s a real estate guy. He&#8217;s got all the money,&#8221; the other officer said, adding, &#8220;It&#8217;s crazy the people that do this. Like, they could do whatever they want. Like, they could do other things. They could go other ways, but wow.&#8221;
York was nabbed after an undercover officer posted an ad posing as a woman on a &#8220;known prostitution website,&#8221; according to an incident report, ESPN <a href="https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/49723635/49ers-owner-jed-york-contacted-fictitious-prostitution-ad-3-s-arrest">reported</a>. York allegedly contacted the undercover officer twice last Saturday, and reached out a third time on Sunday after his he didn&#8217;t get a response to the first two messages. After the third message from York, the undercover officer offered to meet York in East Palestine, according to the incident report.
York was initially charged with engaging in prostitution and possession of criminal tools before he accepted a plea deal that changed the prostitution charge to a disorderly conduct charge. York was absent from the NFL team owners&#8217; meeting on Wednesday, and NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell <a href="https://www.nbcsports.com/nfl/profootballtalk/rumor-mill/news/roger-goodell-confirms-league-reviewing-jed-yorks-plea-deal-for-possible-punishment">said</a> the league was reviewing the incident.
The 49ers owner filed for divorce in May of this year after a nearly 15 year marriage with his wife Danielle. The couple share two children.
York&#8217;s connection to the 49ers goes back generations as his grandfather owned the franchise for 23 years before passing ownership onto York&#8217;s parents, who in turn, passed the torch to York. The wealthy businessman is also a co-owner of Premier League club Leeds United and Scottish Premiership club Rangers.

Former NBA player Enes Kanter Freedom has been banned from future Chicago Sky home games after a confrontation with guard Natasha Cloud led to his ejection from Sunday&#8217;s game.
Sky owner Michael Alter told local reporters on Tuesday that Freedom would not be allowed to attend the team&#8217;s games at Chicago&#8217;s Wintrust Arena unless he was first &#8220;able to prove to our satisfaction that he is able to abide by our rules without being a potential threat.&#8221;
&#8220;He has demonstrated to us, unequivocally, that he has the potential to be a threat,&#8221; Alter said.
&#8220;The fact that we&#8217;re having this conversation to me is just really sad,&#8221; Alter continued. &#8220;It&#8217;s a shame that we&#8217;re spending as much time as we are on this and not the wonderful things that are happening in our league — or even some of the not-so-wonderful things, like the Sky not making the playoffs for the third year in a row. I&#8217;m sure those are the things we should be talking about.&#8221;
Alter accused Freedom of attending the game to provoke a reaction and attract attention.
&#8220;It was pretty clear to us that his purpose of coming here was trying to be provocative, to see how much attention he could get and stir up,&#8221; Alter said.
Alter <a href="https://chicago.suntimes.com/chicago-sky/2026/08/25/sky-ban-enes-kanter-freedom-from-games-according-to-principal-owner-michael-alter">added</a> that he interviewed people seated near Freedom who told him that Freedom initiated the exchange by directing basketball-related trash talk at Cloud.
Freedom, who attended the game wearing a shirt reading &#8220;WOMAN. Noun. Adult human female,&#8221; claimed that he&#8217;d attended the game to support Indiana Fever shooting guard Sophie Cunningham, who&#8217;s been the target of protests since she declared her stance on defending biological females and girls in athletics. Sunday&#8217;s confrontation came after he raised both arms in celebration of a Cunningham three-pointer.
He said that during the next possession, Cloud approached the baseline where he was seated and shouted at him, saying that Cunningham was never going to sleep with him. Freedom, who said that Cunningham is just a friend, stood up and stepped toward the court — but a number of players and officials stepped between him and Cloud, and he was escorted from the arena before things could escalate further.
After a brief conversation with security, Freedom left the venue.

Lane Kiffin’s messy departure from the University of Mississippi apparently sparked enough paranoia inside the Rebels’ football program that an FBI agent was brought in to check the team’s facility for potential listening devices.
“We actually had the FBI come through and walk the building for bugs and for everything,” Walker Jones, a senior figure in Ole Miss&#8217; name, image, and likeness operation, <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2dY29qzginI&amp;t=511s">revealed</a> last week. “We knew kind of what was in Baton Rouge, and we knew how they operated.&#8221;
“I remember getting on my knees and looking underneath the desk, like checking for, is there some sort of bug in my office? Somebody was like, ‘What are you doing?’ I’m like, ‘You just trust me, you don’t know this guy like I do,'&#8221; Jones said, referring to Kiffin.
Kiffin left Ole Miss abruptly in November 2025, just days after he led the team to an 11-1 regular season and its first-ever College Football Playoff spot. When he accepted the LSU job, he wanted to remain in Oxford to coach Ole Miss through the playoffs, but Athletic Director Keith Carter rejected Kiffin&#8217;s request, and the school promoted defensive coordinator Pete Golding to replace him. Golding then led the Rebels to two playoff wins before they were knocked out by Miami in the semifinals.
Kiffin took members of his Ole Miss staff with him to LSU, including offensive coordinator Charlie Weis Jr. and tight end coach Joe Cox.
Kiffin has since said that he loved Ole Miss and had a “wonderful experience” there but viewed the opportunity at LSU as a challenge he needed to take on.
“You needed Oxford and Ole Miss more than they needed you, and that can totally be true,” he said in May 2026.
Golding, the new Ole Miss coach, confirmed to reporters Monday that a federal officer was involved, but indicated that Jones’ account may have exaggerated events.
“In any bowl game or playoff situation, you’re obviously going to increase security,&#8221; Golding said. “I’m not sure that there was a hiring process of, ‘Here we go with the FBI,’” Golding said.
“I do think we probably have a current player whose dad happens to work for the FBI and lives in town,&#8221; he continued. “It wasn’t some situation where we said, ‘Oh my gosh, get in here.’”
“Any time you get into the playoff system and you have guys from this building go to other places, you want to make sure things are secure for your players,&#8221; Golding added.
