Topline: Following his showdown with Chinese President Xi Jinping, President Trump has returned from his Asia tour with new deals in hand and perhaps most importantly, reduced tensions with China. 
After the meeting, Xi described the feeling as “warm” and Trump touted what he called an “amazing meeting.” Here he is grading the talk aboard Air Force One. 
“Overall, I guess on the scale of 0-10, with ten being the best, I would say the meeting was a 12,” <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I2hY2qJYtj0">said</a> Trump.
Trump said official terms of a deal are “very close to resolved,” but it appears the big ticket items on his wishlist were met. In a Truth Social post early Thursday, the President said Xi had agreed to “work diligently with us to stop the flow of Fentanyl into our Country.” As a result of those assurances, Trump announced plans to lower the existing tariff that was imposed on China in response to fentanyl trafficking.

In addition, Trump said Xi agreed to “purchase American energy,” potentially oil and gas from Alaska. Trump is looking to keep Beijing from buying Russian oil, so that would be a win-win.
On the agricultural front, Trump says China has also agreed to begin purchasing massive amounts of soybeans, sorghum, and other farm products. With that news, he encouraged farmers to “immediately go out and buy more land and larger tractors.” And finally, he said the Chinese would resume the sale of rare earth minerals used for tech products and large magnets.
Trump says the overall tariff rate on Chinese exports will fall from 57% to 47%, leaving significant trade barriers in place, but far lower than the 100% plus rate that was looming without a deal. The two countries also agreed to remove port fees that had been impacting cargo ships from each side. Looking ahead, Trump said the two leaders will continue to meet on a more regular basis — he’ll travel to Beijing in April, and Xi will come to the US shortly after, potentially to Mar-a-Lago.

Topline: The Trump administration has pledged to crack down on illegal immigrant drivers, but Americans have been left wondering: why do these crashes keep happening?
An accident in Florida brought this issue into the national spotlight. An accident was allegedly caused by an illegal immigrant identified as Harjinder Singh, an Indian national. Singh allegedly made an illegal u-turn, blocking a highway, and causing a van to careen into Singh’s trailer. Three people were killed in the crash.
Several similar cases have happened since then, often involving illegal immigrants carrying California-issued commercial driver&#8217;s licenses (CDLs).
Some of the major contributors to this issue of illegal immigrants obtaining CDLs have been the flood of illegal immigration into the United States under former President Joe Biden, and then the <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/how-illegal-immigrant-truck-drivers-ended-up-on-americas-roads">failure</a> of the federal government to ensure that CDL applicants received proper testing before they were handed driver&#8217;s licenses.
In Singh’s case, the Indian national failed an English language proficiency test in the aftermath of the fatal collision, “providing correct responses to just 2 of 12 verbal questions and only accurately identifying 1 of 4 highway traffic signs,” according to the Department of Transportation.
A Republican-backed bill in Congress <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/republican-bill-takes-aim-at-democrat-states-giving-truck-licenses-to-illegal-aliens">aims</a> to crack down on these holes in the system. Under the legislation, Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy would have the authority to revoke a state’s ability to grant “non-domiciled CDLs,” or commercial licenses for applicants who live out of state, if the state were found in violation of federal rules around CDLs.
The bill would also standardize some rules about the CDL process by requiring all testing to be conducted in English and that all CDL applicants hold a driver’s license for at least one year.
The Trump administration is taking steps to ensure that all testing is done in English. Duffy is also conducting a nationwide audit of state CDL permitting programs. The worst offender is California, where more than 25% of non-domiciled CDLs reviewed by the feds were improperly issued, <a href="https://www.transportation.gov/briefing-room/trumps-transportation-secretary-sean-p-duffy-takes-emergency-action-protect-americas">according</a> to the Department of Transportation.
The Trump administration is also restricting who can get a CDL. Foreigners must have specialized work visas. They can&#8217;t be border crossers who are awaiting the fate of their asylum cases.

Topline: Massive political shifts are taking place in South America – including rightward shifts in multiple countries, such as Bolivia and Argentina – and the Trump administration is playing a key role on several fronts. Morning Wire spoke to Andres Martinez-Fernandez, senior policy analyst for Latin America at The Heritage Foundation, for more on South American governments. (The following interview has been lightly edited.)
Morning Wire: We’ve seen rapidly changing dynamics between the administration and various political leaders in South America. Let’s start with Argentina. We just saw Javier Milei’s party win a landslide victory. How significant is this victory in the country?
Martinez-Fernandez: It&#8217;s really significant because President Milei is representing a major departure from what has been for the past couple decades. Argentine leadership is typically Left, far-Left leaning and socialist in its nature for economic policies. That has brought about generally an anti-American bent. But President Milei has brought an agenda which is really the opposite of all those – very pro-market, individual responsibility, cutting government. As far as relations with the United States, we&#8217;ve likely never had a more aligned leader in Argentina. This victory really solidified what was, with his victory a couple years back for the presidency, a massive shift. But it really solidifies that with this legislative win, which is going to help him with his agenda.
Morning Wire: The U.S. recently helped Argentina with a $40 billion support package – how much of a role did that play in this election?
Martinez-Fernandez: I think a very significant role, and President Trump deserves a lot of credit for the victory that we saw for Milei’s party. What we saw was, just in the days prior to the election, the White House meeting with President Milei and President Trump and the announcement of this package, which is directly aimed at stabilizing the financial crisis, which was generated by the socialist policies which dominated in Argentina for so long. This is a vital economic stability move, but in addition to that, it&#8217;s a major sign of confidence from the United States and from the world, which I think translated into more confidence from Argentines in the president of Argentina&#8217;s ability to stabilize the economy and try a new path forward.
Morning Wire: Turning to Bolivia. We recently saw a monumental election there  – the first conservative president in 20 years. What is the significance of the election there and does it fit into a larger trend in South America?
Martinez-Fernandez: Yeah, absolutely. It does seem to be certainly part of a broader trend that we&#8217;ve seen. In a lot of ways, President Milei was the start of this as far as the current wave of right-of-center leaders coming to power, Bolivia being the most recent. But before that, we saw elections in Ecuador, which solidified a more conservative leader, and also elsewhere in the region. We have upcoming elections in countries like Chile, Brazil, and Peru, where a conservative candidate is well-poised also for victory there. I do think part of that is centering from the impetus that we see from the successes of Argentina, but more broadly, the Trump administration&#8217;s very positive engagement with these partners. The shift in Bolivia specifically is historic. This is a country which has just been completely controlled politically by the socialist movement there, which has dominated institutions and weaponized those to maintain power. The people just overwhelmingly, despite all of that, rejected that movement and now have a more conservative leader who has promised to do a series of shifts – not only as far as domestically aligning with more pro-market economic and stable policies, but also as far as shifting toward the United States and Western alliances.

More scuttlebutt has been bandied about that the Trump administration is indeed becoming more interested in the alliances it can build closer to home rather than with the traditional European allies.
The New York Post <a href="https://nypost.com/2025/03/03/us-news/trump-mulls-pivot-from-european-conflicts-building-latin-american-alliances-after-zelensky-oval-office-blowup/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reported</a> that a “source close to the White House” stated in reference to the administration’s desire for Europe to shoulder the assistance of Ukraine, “This is going to be part of a larger pivot away from conflicts in Europe and a pivot towards building alliances in Latin America and in the Western Hemisphere.” The source mentioned conservative Argentinian President Javier Milei, El Salvador President Nayib Bukele, and Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado Parisca as leaders with whom the White House would like to build strong alliances.
National Security Advisor Mike Waltz said Monday morning in reference to supporting Ukraine, “The American people’s patience is not unlimited; their wallets are not unlimited, and our stockpiles and munitions are not unlimited.”
In late January, Secretary of State Marco Rubio made clear that when President Donald Trump spoke of America First, that meant that the United States needs to prioritize problems closer to home.
In an <a href="https://www.wsj.com/opinion/an-americas-first-foreign-policy-secretary-of-state-rubio-writes-western-hemisphere-too-long-neglected-a81707b0?st=Ga7aQt" target="_blank" rel="noopener">opinion piece</a> published in The Wall Street Journal, Rubio said it was “no accident that my first trip abroad as secretary of state, to Central America on Friday, will keep me in the hemisphere.&#8221;
“This is rare among secretaries of state over the past century,” Rubio pointed out. “For many reasons, U.S. foreign policy has long focused on other regions while overlooking our own. As a result, we’ve let problems fester, missed opportunities and neglected partners. That ends now.”
“We see a prosperous region rife with opportunities,” he declared. “We can strengthen trade ties, create partnerships to control migration, and enhance our hemisphere’s security. El Salvador, Guatemala, Costa Rica, Panama and the Dominican Republic — the countries I will visit on this trip — all stand to benefit tremendously from greater cooperation with the U.S.&#8221;
“Covid exposed the fragility of America’s dependence on far-flung supply chains,” he recalled. “Relocating our critical supply chains to the Western Hemisphere would clear a path for our neighbors’ economic growth and safeguard Americans’ own economic security. &#8230; As our regional partners build themselves up, they can more easily resist countries such as China that promise much but deliver little.”

“I am confident that the countries I will soon visit will be ready partners,” he asserted. “Like President Trump, their leaders are pragmatists who put their citizens first. And because they are pragmatists, they also know that there is much more to be gained from working with the U.S. than not.”

Now that our government is being run by a faceless, unelected cabal of credentialed socialist elites who are so intellectually brilliant they have passed beyond the golden realm of genius into an ethereal dumpster of complete stupidity, there is not much left for our dementia-riddled president to do except lie in his lawn chair, eat Jello and start a nuclear war with Russia.
The end of the world began as national leaders gathered at the G-20 summit in Rio de Janeiro this week, where President Biden was disappointed to learn that Peking Lame Duck did not mean that dinner was Chinese take-out but just that he had to stand behind Xi Jinping in the group photo. So as important world leaders — like whoever the president of Indonesia is — rose to give speeches promoting world peace, the dejected Biden wandered off to finish coloring the Winnie-the-Pooh-Gets-Stuck-in-a-Knothole page of his briefing book, and then give Ukraine permission to fire American-made long range missiles into a country run by a power hungry lunatic with a nuclear arsenal large enough to reduce the ruins of Great Britain to the ruins of Great Britain.
In a speech delivered to a potted plant he mistook for a little girl with great-smelling hair, Biden explained why he changed his strategy from letting the war drag on forever through maundering incompetence to getting everyone on earth killed through maundering incompetence.
The president told the adorable little plant, “Given the inexcusable aggression of Vladimir Putin’s reckless attempt to rebuild the Russian empire by invading a perfectly innocent cesspit of corruption like Ukraine, I just wanted to see the pretty streaks of light that missiles make when you fire them across the night sky. And by the way, your hair smells terrific, but I don’t think you should have dyed it green like that.”
Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskyy was ecstatic at being set free to recklessly provoke a nuclear power, and celebrated by adding yet another inexplicable ‘y’ to his last name, then goose-stepping back and forth through the rubble of a children’s hospital while spouting double-talk in a French accent in the hopes someone might mistake him for Napoleon.

Russian President Vladimir Putin, meanwhile, responded to the attacks by lowering the Russian standard for nuclear retaliation. Whereas before, the Putin doctrine declared that a Russian nuclear attack could only be triggered as a self-defensive response to a ground invasion of the motherland, it now permits the launch of world-destroying total war as a gesture of annoyance at the crappy finale of Gilmore Girls or any other equivalently frothy-but-delightful streaming concoction. The doctrine is mitigated by the fact that nuclear launch cannot begin without the final approval of President Putin or anyone else wearing a spiked helmet and beating his bared chest while proclaiming his right to world domination.
Among political conservatives, the sudden launch of American-made missiles from Ukraine into Russia set off a round of wild speculation as to Biden’s motives. Some claimed that the president had set World War III in motion as a reaction to the recent election results, because he felt a series of bright explosions that turned the sky into a sparkling wonderland of irradiated human ash would be an appropriately spectacular way for him to celebrate the defeat of Kamala Harris after she humiliated him by forcing him to abandon a presidential campaign that he would absolutely have won had he still been alive in any meaningful sense of the word. Such theories were dismissed as implausible, however, because they depended on Biden thinking clearly enough to have a discernible motive.
As for President-elect Donald Trump, he spent the day at the Florida headquarters of Space X, where he watched Elon Musk launch a 400-foot-tall starship that would travel halfway around the globe, land gently on Vladimir Putin’s desk in his office at the Kremlin, and open to release a miniature robot Trump who would march out, slap Putin in the face, tell him to stop invading other people’s countries, then march back into the starship, which would return safely to Florida after stopping at McDonald’s to pick up a Happy Meal.
So the transition continues.

The UN and NGOs are betting on a busy future in Mexico. Going forward, the purpose of this one strategically located facility is to “respond comprehensively to the needs of people who arrive in Mexico…migrant refugees who travel together from all continents, and arrive in Tapachula in need of a response or attention,” Giovanni Lepri, the Mexico representative for the United Nations High Commission on Refugees (UNHCR), <a href="https://www.milenio.com/policia/nuevo-modelo-mexicano-de-movilidad-humana">told reporters</a> when Mexico’s foreign ministry announced it in April 2024.
But the Tapachula mall represents a far more expansive billion-dollar migration-route safety net constructed during the Biden-Harris years using record-breaking U.S. taxpayer contributions. It plugs into <a href="https://eldiariony.com/2024/08/21/mexico-abrira-un-centro-en-tapachula-para-atender-a-migrantes-en-la-frontera-sur/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">two other huge, one-stop-migration malls</a> erected in the northern Mexico cities of Monterrey and Tijuana. These gleaming new Mexican facilities and plenty of UN and NGO substations in Mexican towns and cities merely form the final terminus of the trails to the United States lined with pots of U.S. tax money gold all along the way. But they are representative of what’s happening throughout Latin America.

The UNHCR, which received <a href="https://reporting.unhcr.org/donors/united-states-america#:~:text=Through%20the%20Safe%20Mobility%20Initiative%20in%20the%20Americas,billion%2C%20including%20US%24%20217%20million%20in%20flexible%20funding." target="_blank" rel="noopener">$1.9 billion in U.S. taxpayer funds</a> in 2024 and $2.1 billion in 2023 (compared to <a href="https://reporting.unhcr.org/sites/default/files/Flexible-Funding-in-2019.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">$377 million in 2019</a>) for migration assistance throughout Latin America, started building the Tapachula facility on land donated by Chiapas State as <a href="https://www.milenio.com/policia/nuevo-modelo-mexicano-de-movilidad-humana" target="_blank" rel="noopener">part of the deal with Mexico to run it</a>.
The UNHCR, UN International Organization for Migration (IOM), UNICEF, and dozens of private often religion-based NGOs scattered around Tapachula, will work alongside one another under one massive roof here – evidently planning a years-long collaboration.

None of the UN/NGO pots of gold are exactly secret but are relatively hard to find for the uninitiated. Even harder to grasp is any connection to domestic American policies or legitimate points of political debate. 
The <a href="https://www.r4v.info/en/rmrp2024update" target="_blank" rel="noopener">UN’s 2024 update</a> to the &#8220;Regional Refugee and Migrant Response Plan&#8221; (RMRP for short), a UNHCR and IOM planning and budget document, lays out in detail how it planned to hand out nearly $1.6 billion in 17 Latin America countries using its network of 248 different NGOs. (<a href="https://www.r4v.info/en/rmrp2023-2024">For the complete list of involved groups, see p. 268, here</a>, and explore their activities further <a href="https://www.r4v.info/en/activity_explorer" target="_blank" rel="noopener">with this interactive tool</a>).
That was on top of the <a href="https://rmrp.r4v.info/#:~:text=THE%20REGIONAL%20RESPONSE%20for%202023%2D2024&amp;text=Provide%20and%20improve%20safe%20and,synergy%20with%20sustainable%20development%20assistance." target="_blank" rel="noopener">2023-2024 RMRP plan</a>, which called for 228 NGOs to spend $1.72 billion on trailside assistance to thousands of migrants who they all know will illegally pass through many countries and, finally, breach the U.S. border. 
Hundreds of millions of dollars for all of this comes straight from U.S. taxpayers in the form of sharply increased U.S. State Department bequeathals, USAID grants, and flexible spending contributions to the UNHCR and IOM.
<h3>Too Far For Average Americans To See</h3>
For an idea of how U.S. tax money is spent to flood the American border, the far northwest Colombian town of Necoclí provides a window. This is a major staging town for migrants preparing to boat across the Gulf of Urabá for smuggler-guided backpack trips through the so-called “Darien Gap” jungle passage that leads into Panama and eventually Mexico.

In Necoclí, the UN and NGO agencies arrayed themselves in something like an outdoor swap meet of NGO booths and an IOM mobile bus office on a few acres next to the gulf beach, the Center for Immigration Studies observed during an August 2024 research trip to the region. The Jewish NGO <a href="https://cadena.ngo/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Cadena</a> was set up in a booth next to the Adventist Development and Relief Agency (ADRA).

NGO and UN workers there said they provide a variety of trail advice and plenty of supplies to the immigrants, including socks, underwear, backpacks, bug repellant, water filters, sunscreen, and Vaseline. In addition, they offer survival advice, like classes for children on how to avoid sexual predators among the strange men traveling the Darien Gap.
And food.
“Like things easy to carry so they can eat and be done with it,” the Cadena worker said.
On this day, the Cadena worker said she’d given out thousands of food items such as packaged soup to more than 3,000 migrants during the previous few months, showing the last of it: a box with a handful of granola bars she hoped to hand out soon so she could go home.

What about critics who say NGOs like Cadena are helping migrants break the laws of many countries?
“As an organization,” the Cadena worker responded. “We’re not here to judge. We’re just here to provide a service.”
But aren’t you helping them migrate?
“Only by giving them the things that I mentioned, not money or fare, just certain resources for the trip,” she explained.

iPad-carrying UNHCR workers interacted with groups of migrants sitting in chairs under open-air shelters, surveying their needs for the trail ahead. 
Across the Urabá Gulf in the staging town of Acandi, the Clan del Gulfo paramilitary controls the human smuggling operations into the Darien Gap. The cartel runs two migrant camps where the migrants are brought for final journey preparations.
We gained permission to access one of the camps, “Camp 1.” Inside, we found NGOs providing medical services, legal counseling, and food.
Furthermore, Colombian banks had been allowed to set up a money wiring service so that migrants could pay their foot guides.
All involved could not possibly be unaware that the people they are assisting intend to break the immigration laws of a half dozen countries up trail, including, ultimately, illegally breaching the American border.
The IOM workers hand out hygiene kits to women but had run out of the kits some days earlier. 
The Adventist Development and Relief Agency (ADRA) teaches then how to filter jungle water and avoid sleeping in flood-prone riverbanks.
<h3>A Bright Future For Mass Migration? </h3>
The UN and NGO’s migration advocacy industrial complex is now preparing its 2025-2026 plan for the trails of Latin America. 
A request for input from its NGO partners suggests an ambitious coming year for providing “cash and voucher assistance,” “food security,” “humanitarian transportation,” “shelter,” and most other basic human needs.
Who will be the recipients?
“Refugees and migrants in-transit (all nationalities) who cross an international border.”
Most of which would be much less possible without the generous support of the American taxpayer.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officials arrested an <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/illegal-immigration" target="_blank" rel="noopener">illegal alien</a> gang leader in New York on Wednesday who is accused of murdering 23 people in Peru.
ICE, which announced the arrest Thursday evening, said that 38-year-old Gianfranco Torres-Navarro was arrested in Endicott, about a 150 miles northwest of New York City.
Torres-Navarro was released into the U.S. by the Biden-Harris administration on May 16 at the Texas-Mexico border after illegally entering the country, the AP <a href="https://apnews.com/article/peru-gianfranco-23-killings-immigration-murder-9ba446c26cde81e48396a30a7a687bba">reported</a>.
&#8220;It should alarm every American that a Peruvian gang leader, who has murdered 23 people, crossed our border and was released into the country,&#8221; said House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA). &#8220;The Biden-Harris Administration’s open border policies are terrorizing our communities.&#8221;
Peru confirmed to the AP that it sought international help tracking down and capturing Torres-Navarro on July 3. Peruvian authorities also sought the capture of Mishelle Sol Ivanna Ortíz Ubillús, whom they described as being a key player in his criminal enterprise.
“Gianfranco Torres-Navarro poses a significant threat to our communities, and we won’t allow New York to be a safe haven for dangerous noncitizens,” said ERO Buffalo Field Office Director Thomas P. Brophy in a news release. “Well done by our ERO Buffalo officers who brought this individual into custody.”

Peruvian law enforcement officials said that Torres-Navarro was the leader of a criminal organization called &#8220;Los Killers,&#8221; which specializes in extorting construction companies and contract killings, the report said. He reportedly fled the country after killing a retired police officer and a city official earlier this year.

Guyana President Mohamed Irfaan Ali slammed a <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/bbc" target="_blank" rel="noopener">BBC</a> reporter in an interview this week for claiming that his small nation was contributing to climate change by allowing oil drilling off its coast.
BBC journalist Stephen Sackur suggested that Ali was wrong for allowing the drilling and asked him if he had the &#8220;right&#8221; to do so.
&#8220;Let&#8217;s take a big picture look at what&#8217;s going on here. Over the next decade, two decades, it is expected that there will be $150 billion worth of oil and gas extracted off your coast,&#8221; Sackur said. &#8220;It&#8217;s an extraordinary figure. But think of it in practical terms. That means, according to many experts, more than 2 billion tons of carbon emissions will come from your seabed from those reserves and be released into the atmosphere.&#8221;
&#8220;Let me stop you right there,&#8221; Ali fired back. &#8220;Let me stop you right there. Do you know that Guyana has a forest, forever, that is the size of England and Scotland combined? The forest stores 19.5 gigatons of carbon, a forest that we have kept alive, a forest that we have kept alive.&#8221;
&#8220;Does that give you the right to release all of this carbon?&#8221; Sackur asked.
&#8220;Does that give you the right to lecture us on climate change?&#8221; Ali fired back. &#8220;I am going to lecture you on climate change because we have kept this forest alive that stores 19.5 gigatons of carbon that you enjoy, that the world enjoys, that you don&#8217;t pay us for, that you don&#8217;t value, that you don&#8217;t see a value in, that the people of Guyana has kept alive.&#8221;
&#8220;Guess what? We have in the lowest deforestation rate in the world. And guess what? Even with our greatest exploration of the oil and gas resource we have now, we will still be net zero, Guyana will still be net zero with all our exploration,&#8221; he continued.
Sackur tried to cut Ali off, but Ali kept firing away.
&#8220;I am not finished yet. I am just not finished as yet,&#8221; he continued. &#8220;Because this is a hypocrisy that exists in the world. We, the world in the last 50 years, has lost 65% of all its biodiversity. We have kept our biodiversity. Are you valuing it? Are you ready to pay for it? When is the developed world going to pay for it? Or are you in the pockets of those who have damaged the environment? Are you and your system in the pockets of those who destroyed the environment through the Industrial Revolution and now lecturing us? Are you in their pockets? Are you paid by them?&#8221;

Gunmen took over an <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/ecuador" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Ecuadorian</a> television station during a live broadcast on Tuesday as the country descended into further chaos and a state of armed conflict was declared.
The incident comes after Adolfo Macías, a convicted leader of one of the country&#8217;s most powerful gangs, escaped from prison on Monday, sending shockwaves throughout the country.
During their storming of public TC Televisión station, gunshots were heard and alleged explosives were shown by members of the Los Tiguerones and Los Lobos gangs, The Washington Post <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/world/2024/01/09/ecuadoran-president-declares-armed-conflict-gunmen-storm-tv-studio/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reported</a>. Law enforcement confirmed the arrests of at least 13 alleged gang members involved in the incident.
The incident comes after multiple attacks have happened across the country over the last day, &#8220;including about 30 car explosions and the kidnapping of seven police officers,&#8221; the report said. &#8220;Riots have also broken out at several prisons, with reports that dozens of guards have been held by armed men.&#8221;
Intelligence officials believe the attacks were coordinated and orchestrated by Los Lobos as a potential warning to government leaders against transferring gang leaders to maximum-security prisons.

The increased chaos in the country comes as it continues to crack down on government officials who have been arrested for allegedly working to support drug traffickers.
The report said that the violence has increased sharply in recent years because the country has become &#8220;a critical cocaine transit point and gangs compete for control of drug routes and prisons.&#8221;
Rep. Dan Crenshaw (R-TX) responded to the images of violence unfolding on the streets of Ecuador by recounting his experience living in the country.
&#8220;Right now Ecuador is experiencing an all-out cartel takeover. They’re executing hostages, taking over prisons, and stormed a news station on live TV,&#8221; he said. &#8220;I used to live in Ecuador. My dad took an oil job there for a year and half while I was in middle school. Nothing like this was happening. Over the past 20 years cartels and drug traffickers have become far too powerful and more dangerous than ever.&#8221;

The Biden administration has sent tens of millions of dollars to Latin American countries for programs that address “root causes” of illegal immigration, all as southern border crossings hit record highs. 
The Biden administration has spent at least $40 million on immigration-related projects in Latin America in fiscal year 2023 that are ostensibly supposed to help bring down illegal immigration from the region, according to a Daily Wire review of <a href="https://www.foreignassistance.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">foreign spending data</a>. 
The projects have been part of the Biden administration’s strategy to pump money into the region with the goal of decreasing illegal immigration. As Biden has sent money abroad, Republican lawmakers have urged more funding for security measures at the southern border. Critics also have pointed to Biden&#8217;s loose asylum policies and revocation of Trump&#8217;s Remain in Mexico policy as key reasons for the skyrocketing border crossings. 
Ira Mehlman of the Federation for American Immigration Reform (FAIR), a nonprofit that advocates for solutions to uncontrolled immigration, told The Daily Wire that the actual root cause of the illegal immigration crisis is the Biden administration’s immigration policy. 
“The root cause of the surge of illegal immigration is the policies that the Biden administration put in place from day one, and continue to implement in spite of the fact that we’re seeing record numbers of people coming across the border. We seem to break a new record almost every month,” Mehlman said. 
One initiative rolled out in fiscal year 2023 was the Alliance for Root Causes and Opportunities project, which is designed to address “the root causes that influence people from Central America to migrate to the United States through Mexico,” according to the United States Agency for International Development, or USAID. 
Mexico was allocated $5 million in 2023 for the project, which was implemented through <a href="https://chemonics.com/projects/partnering-with-the-government-of-mexico-to-address-root-migration-causes-in-central-america/">Chemonics International</a>, a private international development company. Another $3 million commitment to Mexico was designated for “basic education,” and $2 million was for agriculture in Mexico. 
In 2023 alone, roughly 670,000 Mexicans crossed the southern border into the United States.
Another initiative, described by USAID as the “Irregular Migration Project,” sent millions of dollars to Guatemala, from where roughly 226,000 illegal immigrants into the United States have come. The purpose of the project is “addressing the root causes of irregular migration in Guatemala.”
Two grants, one for $8.5 million and the other for $2.5 million were allocated in fiscal year 2023 for Guatemala in the “good governance” sector. Another grant under the project was $2.2 million for “conflict mitigation and reconciliation,” while a fourth was $500,000 for “civil society.”
All the money is distributed with the help of the International Organization for Migration (IOM), the United Nations&#8217; immigration organization that <a href="https://www.iom.int/who-we-are">says</a> it is &#8220;dedicated to promoting humane and orderly migration for the benefit of all.” The IOM <a href="https://www.axios.com/2018/06/29/in-rebuke-international-organization-of-migration-rejects-trump-nominee">feuded</a> with former President Donald Trump by declining to seat his nominee to head the organization. 
USAID also works with IOM on multiple projects under the “Scholarships For Educational Opportunities” banner. 
“The project aims to mitigate irregular migration from El Salvador by increasing equitable access to formal educational opportunities for potential migrants and returnees to engender hope, prosperity, and positive self-worth in their lives,” the program&#8217;s description at USAID reads. 
In fiscal year 2023, $4 million was designated for “basic education” in El Salvador while $2.9 million was allocated for “higher education.” There were also two grants for “private sector competitiveness,” both worth roughly $1.5 million. 
Nearly 60,000 El Salvadorans illegally entered the United States in 2023.
Haiti, which has seen an epidemic of gang violence and civil disorder this year, was given two grants of $3.6 million and $2.7 million for “good governance” and “policies, regulations, and systems,” under the banner of “Humanitarian Assistance.” 
The justification for the project was rooted in the fact that tens of thousands of Haitians have arrived at the U.S. border. In 2023 alone, roughly 69,095 Haitians entered the United States through the southern border. 
“Since the end of August 2021, there are thousands of Haitians assembling in makeshift sites on the Mexican side of the border to wait while deciding whether to attempt entry into the U.S. carrying their belongings, the migrants have been traversing the ankle-deep river between Mexico and Texas. As of 17 September, there were about 13,700 new arrivals in Del Rio City,” the USAID project description says. 
“The International Organization of Migration (IOM) aims to support the improvement of reception facilities to better welcome migrants upon their return to Haiti, both in Port-Au-Prince and Cap-Haitian. This will enable key stakeholders involved in migrant assistance to be prepared for repatriations and stand ready to welcome migrants even when informed in a very short notice,” USAID added.
The United States also sent millions to the region in general, under one project with the purpose of “Assistance for Informed, Safe and Dignified Returns of Vulnerable Migrants in Participating Countries of the Americas,” according to USAID. This project was worth $2.5 million and implemented alongside the IOM.
In total, the United States allocated $1,781,452,241 on all aid projects in fiscal year 2023 for Latin American countries where hundreds of thousands of illegal immigrants came from. This included $441,300,796 to Colombia (137,389 illegal crossings), $9,519,970 to Cuba (63,135 illegal crossings), $50,751,799 to Ecuador (106,635 illegal crossings), $145,002,715 to El Salvador (59,693 illegal crossings), $187,388,066 to Guatemala (225,998 illegal crossings), $331,549,853 to Haiti (69,095 illegal crossings), $151,007,802 to Honduras (213,853 illegal crossings), $112,633,591 to Mexico (671,128 illegal crossings), $27,111,714 to Nicaragua (16,690 illegal crossings), $119,346,269 to Peru (55,276 illegal crossings), and $205,839,666 to Venezuela (302,736 illegal crossings).
Neither the White House or the State Department responded to request for comment.

The $1.7 billion total is just slightly under the $1.8 billion per year <a href="https://www.wsj.com/articles/trump-administration-seeks-18-billion-over-decade-to-expand-border-wall-1515148381" target="_blank" rel="noopener">requested</a> by Trump over a ten year period to construct a border wall. While Mehlman said that funding for a complete border wall, more detention centers, and additional Border Patrol officers would be helpful, the number one priority needed to be taking away incentives to enter the U.S. illegally.
“The number one priority actually does not entail money, it is creating deterrence. The people who are coming are coming for rational reasons. They understand that if they get to the border there is very, very high probability that they will be allowed to remain here indefinitely. We need to change that perception,&#8221; he said. 
House Republicans visited the border this week calling for the Biden administration to clamp down on the crisis and secure the border. 
“We were shown firsthand how the President’s reckless open-border policies are devastating communities across the state,” House Speaker Mike Johnson said of the visit. “The Biden Administration is showing once again it is obviously their deliberate strategy to keep the border open and continue the chaos and humanitarian crisis their policies have created.”

Daily Wire Editor Emeritus <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/ben-shapiro" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Ben Shapiro</a> said that leftist governments in Latin America will eventually crash into the “rocks of reality” as their socialist policies wreck their countries, in the latest episode of his YouTube show <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/episode/you-should-be-worried-about-the-pink-wave" target="_blank" rel="noopener">“Facts.”</a>
In the <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VpSfP_Xm708" target="_blank" rel="noopener">episode</a>, Shapiro pointed to the “wonderful” election of Right-leaning libertarian Javier Milei in Argentina as a sign that the leftist governments that had risen to power throughout the region during so-called Pink Waves were faltering.
“That Pink Wave isn’t an iron wall, as it was with Soviet-occupied Eastern Europe – it is popularly elected Leftist governments in South and Latin America that have increasingly pursued not only economic redistributionism and nationalism of industry, but outright tyranny and anti-Americanism,” Shapiro explained. 
Shapiro pointed out how the American press often talked of the danger of authoritarianism abroad while ignoring the threat of socialism, which has taken hold of many Latin American countries.
Throughout the rest of the episode, Shapiro explained the history of the first and second Pink Wave in Latin America and how it was propelled forward by the Sao Paolo Forum, a conference of leftist parties in the region that was founded in the 1990s to rebrand socialism and communism after the Soviet Union collapsed.
The first Pink Wave took place after the Cold War with leaders like Hugo Chavez taking power in Venezuela and Lula da Silva being elected in Brazil in 2003. This wave later floundered in the years following the Great Recession in 2008. However, after 2018, leftist parties again began to take back power in countries like Argentina, Bolivia, Peru, Honduras, and Chile.

The consequences of leftist rule in these countries have been disastrous, Shapiro said. For example, countries like Venezuela and Argentina have faced rampant inflation, while corruption constantly plagues countries like Mexico and Bolivia.
“The pink tide that has risen, receded, and risen again will ultimately crash against the rocks of reality as it has in the past. Corruption and lack of rule of law create the preconditions for dissatisfaction with any government, but Left-wing governments in Latin and South America have channeled that dissatisfaction into anti-democratic centralization of power and impoverishment of their own citizenry,” Shapiro concluded, saying that he hoped that Milei’s election was only the beginning of a shift away from Left-wing politics in the region.

That’s what the legacy media have decided: The newly-elected libertarian conservative leader of Argentina is absolutely frightening.
<a href="https://www.axios.com/2023/11/20/argentina-vote-milei-massa-presidential-runoff-election" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Axios</a> calls him a “far-right economist who’s been compared to former President Trump.” A <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2023/11/20/world/americas/javier-milei-argentina-trump.html#:~:text=Mr.%20Milei%2C%2053%2C%20has,peso%20with%20the%20U.S.%20dollar" target="_blank" rel="noopener">New York Times</a> headline reads, “Argentina Braces Itself for Its New ’Anarcho-Capitalist’ President,” and calls the election Argentina’s “Donald Trump moment.” The <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/world/2023/08/14/javier-milei-argentina-presidential-election/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Washington Post</a> asks, “Who is Javier Milei, Argentina’s far-right president elect?” <a href="https://www.nbcnews.com/now/video/argentina-elects-ring-wing-populist-javier-milei-as-new-president-198346309505" target="_blank" rel="noopener">NBC News</a> has called him a “controversial figure, known to his fans as ‘The Crazy’ and ‘The Wig,’ for his larger than life personality and hair.”
This, unsurprisingly, is not the way the press treated the election of former convict and Left-winger Lula de Silva in Brazil. “Brazil Elects Lula, a Leftist Former Leader, in a Rebuke of Bolsonaro,” the New York Times <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/live/2022/10/30/world/brazil-presidential-election#:~:text=BRAS%C3%8DLIA%20%E2%80%94%20Voters%20in%20Brazil%20on,divisive%20four%20years%20in%20office" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reported </a>last year. At the time, the <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/world/2022/10/30/lula-da-silva-president-brazil/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Washington Post</a> asked, “Who is Lula? What to know about Brazil’s president.”
But Milei, as we’ve said, must be one scary character.

So, what are his deeply frightening positions? He has called for vast cuts to Argentina’s government — a necessity, since Argentina has <a href="https://www.europarl.europa.eu/thinktank/en/document/EPRS_BRI(2023)753938#:~:text=In%20fact%2C%20since%202001%2C%20Argentina,of%20the%20COVID%2D19%20pandemic">defaulted</a> on its debts three times since 2001, has a $43 billion <a href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/features/2023-10-06/the-imf-s-43-billion-argentina-problem-is-about-to-get-worse?embedded-checkout=true" target="_blank" rel="noopener">outstanding loan</a> to the International Monetary Fund, and now faces another default. They received a $57 billion <a href="https://www.reuters.com/world/americas/imfs-argentina-predicament-seek-reforms-tango-or-kill-music-2023-09-15/#:~:text=Just%20five%20years%20ago%2C%20Argentina,and%20a%20gaping%20budget%20deficit" target="_blank" rel="noopener">bailout</a> just five years ago. Thanks to out-of-control spending, Argentina has had to print pesos hand over fist, which is why, according to the Ministry of the Economy, total money supply in Argentina skyrocketed <a href="https://www.msn.com/en-us/money/markets/groundhog-day-for-deadbeat-argentina/ar-AA1eSfUV" target="_blank" rel="noopener">30.7% a year</a> from 2007 to 2022. The poverty rate in the country is 40%.
Milei comes into office promising serious cuts. His media appearances may be colorful, but that all serves a purpose: a determination to make massive changes to Argentina’s economic trajectory. Milei has promised to <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QejTtxekdTw" target="_blank" rel="noopener">slash and burn</a> his way through government, cutting 11 of 19 departments.
He campaigned with a chainsaw he pledged he would use on the “<a href="https://ca.style.yahoo.com/style/argentina-president-javier-milei-wastes-193934153.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">parasitic state</a>.” He wants to draw closer to the United States and Israel, and away from China. 
Milei, in his inaugural address, pledged “radical reform.” That reform includes closing the central bank, the institution printing money hand over fist. Milei recognizes the reality: that inflation has crippled Argentina’s ability to recover, <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2023/10/10/world/americas/argentina-peso-javier-mile.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">calling pesos</a> “trash” not “even good as manure.”

All of this should be treated as good news. Argentina’s trajectory has been a total disaster area for decades, despite the glorification of Peronism at the hands of Hollywood. In fact, the markets are treating Milei’s election as they should: Argentine stocks and bonds have jumped on Milei’s election, mainly because he is the first leader of Argentina in generations who has a plan to actually avoid economic default.
Milei’s election should be treated by the United States as the possible opening of a new era in South and Latin America. Along with El Salvadoran President Nayib Bukele, a new wave of conservative governance may be building in the Global South. That would be incredible, given the so-called “Pink Wave” that has washed across the continent over the course of the last few years.

So, why the heartburn?
Because the reality is that there are many in the United States and Europe, particularly on the political Left, who somehow feel more comfortable with the socialist radicalism of Lula De Silva, Gabriel Boric, and even Nicolas Maduro than with anyone who smacks of libertarianism or conservatism. That’s because Argentina is a living example of what happens when corporatism and social democracy are taken to their limits: the substitution of governments for markets, the overregulation of industry in pursuit of social redistributionism, the attempts to create autarky via tariff protections and trade restrictions — the endless populist promise that if all power is given to the government to protect “the people,” all will be well. That promise always results in privation and misallocation, in tyranny and poverty.
Milei’s victory represents that realization. So Leftists label Milei the worst slur they can think of: Trumpian.
Now, the media and the political Left will attempt to shovel all of Argentina’s failures on Milei’s shoulders. Milei still faces a partly-Peronist legislature, as well as a court system stacked in favor of Leftist foolishness — the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court Horacio Rosatti recently said that any attempt to dollarize would be unconstitutional.
This means that Milei’s power may be curbed; he still faces entrenched economic problems, including a dearth of valuable currency to move toward dollarization. He will require an infusion of foreign capital in order to right the ship in Argentina — and then, if he comes up short, capitalism and economic liberalism will be blamed for the failures of Peronism.
That’s always the pattern: Corporatists ruin economies, and then capitalism gets the blame.
But Milei can succeed. Investors ought to look South and put their money where their mouth is to ensure that Argentina realizes its potential as a massive source of prosperity, wealth, and power — and that alliance with the United States grows stronger as a result.
