Abdulbaqi Saeed Abdo knows the real danger of online censorship.
The husband and father of five <a href="https://morningstarnews.org/2025/02/two-christians-in-egypt-released-after-three-years-in-jail/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">walked out</a> of an Egyptian jail recently after three years of detention. The reason for his punishment? Authorities had taken a dislike to his participation in a private Facebook group.
Abdo was a Christian convert from Islam, and liked to discuss theology with other likeminded friends online. Expressing his faith online cost him his freedom – and placed him in immensely difficult conditions, as he battled failing health from a Cairo cell.
The comparison to America’s recent “vibe shift” toward freedom could not be starker. Zuckerberg’s apparent “U-Turn” on free speech last month brought much jubilation to conservative commentators, who had voiced concern for years about the censorship of lawful content on Meta. “It’s time to get back to our roots on free expression,” said the social media mogul, after scrapping his notorious “third party fact checking program” in favor of a “community notes” approach to verifying information, modeled after Elon Musk’s X.
Zuckerberg’s fresh perspective is a clear leap forward in the march against censorship. But as the experience of Abdo in Egypt warns, it isn’t only social media companies who can pose a threat to our right to speak. As free as social media platforms ought to be, governments can nevertheless seize power to shut down speech they don’t like, wherever it may appear.
Few are shocked to learn of unjust crackdowns against “blasphemy” in the Muslim world, in which Abdulbaqi is based. But the problem of state censorship is thriving in the West too. Last week, it was reported that British deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner is set to create a “council on Islamophobia” amidst turmoil on the streets of England – a move which could severely limit free speech and criticism of religious views. The announcement came days after a man was arrested in Manchester for <a href="https://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/crime/greater-manchester-islamic-manchester-arena-greater-manchester-police-twitter-b2691184.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">burning</a> a Koran, and later publicly named by police, despite the risk of threats posed to his life. Recently, in another incident, a Bristol preacher was similarly <a href="https://www.gbnews.com/news/two-tier-policing-christian-pastor-arrested-bristol-preaching-islam-adf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">arrested</a> for daring to compare Islam and Christianity in public, in answer to a question. And in Wakefield, Police recorded a “hate incident” against a 14-year-old autistic boy who <a href="https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-11821157/14-year-old-autistic-boys-naive-prank-scuffed-copy-Koran.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">scuffed</a> a Koran at school. Following death threats, the child was forced into hiding, but police refused to prosecute his tormentors for fear of “escalating” the situation. Instead, his white British mother donned a hijab and begged for forgiveness at the local mosque. 
Granted, most leaders in the West do not voice support for outright blasphemy laws of the kind we see across the Middle East and North Africa. But many instead welcome these undemocratic initiatives via more cleverly disguised “hate speech laws.”
Examples abound.
Take Finland. A member of parliament, Päivi Räsänen, will soon be heading to <a href="https://adfinternational.org/cases/paivi" target="_blank" rel="noopener">criminal trial</a> at the Supreme Court because of a Bible-verse tweet she posted in 2019. Her tweet questioned her church’s sponsorship of a “pride” event – making her a heretic of the state religion of “woke”. It wasn’t a social media platform that censored her Christian view – but the state authorities.
Meanwhile in Mexico, a court <a href="https://adfinternational.org/cases/gabriel-quadri-mexico" target="_blank" rel="noopener">convicted</a> a politician and former presidential candidate, Gabriel Quadri, of “gender based political violence” &#8211; all because he spoke out on “X” about trans-identifying males taking spaces in Congress designated for females. As part of his punishment, he was made to attend a re-education course, and forced to tweet an apology for his words every day, twice a day, for fifteen days.
And in Australia, a <a href="https://adfinternational.org/cases/billboard-chris-australia" target="_blank" rel="noopener">legal showdown</a> in March will see “X” and internet sensation “Billboard Chris” take on the Australian “e-Safety Commissioner,” who censored a tweet upholding the truth on protecting kids from harmful gender ideology.
Freedom of expression is a universal human right. But commitments to free speech from “X” and Meta are only as good as the countries in which they operate – as Abdulbaqi Saeed Abdo knows only too well.
Yet while we celebrate his release from an Egyptian prison this week, the West can hardly lecture Egypt on ending archaic blasphemy laws when we’re intent on introducing our own.

Meta CEO <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/mark-zuckerberg" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Mark Zuckerberg</a> announced Tuesday that his company was implementing major changes to its censorship and fact-checking policies across all platforms, including Facebook and Instagram. 
In a video posted on Facebook, Zuckerberg said that Meta would no longer work with independent fact-checkers, end restrictions on topics like gender and immigration, and scale back filters that censored people for innocuous posts. Zuckerberg said that Meta would focus on ensuring free expression, saying that the recent election seemed like a “cultural tipping point.&#8221; 
&#8220;We’re going to get back to our roots and focus on reducing mistakes, simplifying our policies and restoring free expression on our platforms,&#8221; Zuckerberg said. &#8220;We’re going to get rid of fact-checkers and replace them with Community Notes similar to X, starting in the U.S.&#8221; 
He added that fact-checkers had become politically biased and untrustworthy. 
“After Trump first got elected in 2016, the legacy media wrote nonstop about how misinformation was a threat to democracy,” he said. “We tried in good faith to address those concerns without becoming the arbiters of truth. But the fact checkers have just been too politically biased and have destroyed more trust than they created, especially in the U.S.”
Zuckerberg said restrictions on discussions on topics like immigration and gender were “out of touch with mainstream discourse.”
“What started as a movement to be more inclusive has increasingly been used to shut down opinions and shut out people with different ideas,” he said. 
Zuckerberg said that Meta would dial back its content filters to focus on illegal content and severe violations. He said this was a “trade off” that would lead to objectionable content being caught less often, but fewer people would be censored. 
He said Meta’s Trust and Safe and Content moderation teams would move from California to Texas.

Zuckerberg said Meta would allow more political content to be shared and spread across its platforms after implementing policies that filtered political content from social media feeds. He noted that the Biden administration pushed Meta to censor content. 
“By going after us and other American companies, it has emboldened other governments to go even further,” he said. 
Zuckerberg said Meta would work with the incoming Trump administration to repel censorship abroad. 
“We’re going to work with President Trump to push back on governments around the world that are going after American companies and pushing to censor more,” he said. “The U.S. has the strongest constitutional protections for free expression in the world.”
Shortly after the presidential election, Trump met with Zuckerberg at Mar-a-Lago. Stephen Miller, Trump’s incoming deputy chief of staff for policy, <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/trump-zuckerberg-have-dinner-together-at-mar-a-lago" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a> after the meeting that Zuckerberg “has been very clear about his desire to be a supporter of, and a participant in, this change we’re seeing all around America and the world, with this reform movement that Donald Trump is leading.”
Trump campaign advisor Alex Bruesewitz <a href="https://x.com/alexbruesewitz/status/1876612074379325458" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a> Tuesday that he met with Joe Kaplan, head of public policy at Meta, on Monday to discuss the changes.
&#8220;We covered these topics as well as the need to reinstate MAGA supporters who were previously wrongly removed from their platforms under questionable circumstances,&#8221; he said. &#8220;I am hopeful that the measures will be implemented to reinstate these accounts.&#8221;

&#8220;President Trump, like every other president, has the right to be able to hire his staff, and to be able to pick the people around him,&#8221; Lankford continued. &#8220;The Senate also has a role, in key people, in what&#8217;s called &#8216;advise and consent&#8217; &#8230; at this point, let it play out. Let&#8217;s get past the media noise and let&#8217;s actually do the constitutional process and let&#8217;s actually support the president in who he&#8217;s actually trying to be able to pick to put next to him to be able to actually turn the country around.&#8221;

Google&#8217;s &#8220;doodle&#8221; on the D-Day anniversary was author and activist Jeanne Córdova – and a handy tab underneath the search bar on the home page steered visitors toward &#8220;Pride&#8221;-related content.

In the throes of the 2024 presidential election between Joe Biden and Donald Trump, social media giant <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/meta">Meta</a>, the parent company of Instagram and Facebook, has taken steps to suppress political content on its platforms.
The new feature rolled out <a href="https://about.instagram.com/blog/announcements/continuing-our-approach-to-political-content-on-instagram-and-threads">earlier this year</a> prevents any content flagged as “political” from being recommended to users on Instagram.  Posts “about laws, elections, or social topics” will not be displayed in any of the platform’s curated recommendation systems, which drives a significant amount of follower growth for platforms. 
The company claims the filter is not meant to limit the exposure of any candidate or publisher specifically, and is instead meant to insulate users from politically charged content in general. &#8220;Our goal is to preserve the ability for people to choose to interact with political content, while respecting each person&#8217;s appetite for it,&#8221; Adam Mosseri, head of Instagram, <a href="https://www.npr.org/2024/03/26/1240737627/meta-limit-political-content-instagram-facebook-opt-out">said</a>.
According to<a href="https://www.pewresearch.org/journalism/fact-sheet/social-media-and-news-fact-sheet/"> Pew Research</a>, half of all American adults got their news from social media – last year 30% of all American adults consumed news on Facebook at least “sometimes” and 16% got their news from Instagram. 
The filter was automatically implemented for all accounts by default, and has to be manually disabled by each user.
In order to disable the filter, you’ll need to go to your profile page and tap the icon on the uppermost right to open &#8220;Settings and Activity.&#8221; From there, you’ll need to scroll down to the &#8220;what you see&#8221; section, where you&#8217;ll find &#8220;content preferences.&#8221; Click &#8220;political content,&#8221; and then you’ll need to select the “don’t limit political content from people you don’t follow” option.

As of now the feature does not appear to have been implemented on Facebook, which is still the most popular platform for online news. The Daily Wire has historically been one of the <a href="https://www.mediaite.com/news/the-daily-wire-top-publisher-on-facebook-in-first-quarter-of-2022-3-of-top-5-are-right-leaning/">top publishers on the platform</a> – last year it was revealed that <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/biden-admin-pressured-fb-to-suppress-daily-wire-content-push-users-to-legacy-outlets-newly-released-docs">officials from the Biden administration pressured Meta to redirect traffic away from right-leaning </a>outlets, and specifically singled out The Daily Wire as a site they wanted to censor.
The policy has been criticized as overly broad – the filter is applied to all accounts by default and has to manually be disabled. Meta has also been criticized for limiting voter access to information about candidates and causes during an election year.

X, the platform formerly known as Twitter, has taken a <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/brazilian-supreme-court-takes-on-elon-musk-and-x-in-social-media-crackdown">strong anti-censorship stance</a> since it was purchased by Elon Musk in <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/breaking-elon-musk-officially-takes-over-twitter-as-sale-is-now-final-top-execs-fired-report-says">2022</a>, and it is the fifth most popular platform for consuming news among the social media giants, after Facebook, Youtube, Instagram, and controversial Chinese-owned TikTok, which is set to <a href="https://apnews.com/article/tiktok-divestment-ban-what-you-need-to-know-5e1ff786e89da10a1b799241ae025406">be banned in the United States</a> early next year if parent company ByteDance doesn&#8217;t sell it.

Big Tech Is Filtering The Politics Out Of Your Social Feed. Here’s How To Stop Them.

According to a new report from the Media Research Center, Google has allegedly been engaging in election interference for at least 16 years. The media watchdog group has been studying how Google’s search algorithms are used for censorship. Daily Wire reporter Megan Basham spoke with Morning Wire’s Georgia Howe about the allegations. Georgia: So Megan, if these claims are true, we’re talking about four presidential cycles and another four midterms, right?
Megan: Yes, that’s a lot of elections, Georgia. The report just released by <a href="https://newsbusters.org/blogs/free-speech/gabriela-pariseau/2024/03/18/41-times-google-has-interfered-us-elections-2008" target="_blank" rel="noopener">MRC’s Free Speech America</a> arm says Google interfered in US elections 41 times since 2008. And when you take a look at Google’s donations to political parties in just the 2018 midterm elections, for example, you can see just how aligned the company is with one side of the political aisle. 96% of its employee’s political donations went to Democrats. So according to the MRC, the company, “utilized its power to help push to electoral victory the most liberal candidates … while targeting their opponents for censorship.”
In 2012, for instance, it allowed users to engage in a practice called a “Google Bomb” to target Republican Presidential Candidate Rick Santorum. It’s kind of complicated, but it’s basically a way to smear a candidate. Google users manipulate the algorithms by associating his name with undesirable search terms on various web pages. So when you would search Santorum’s name, disparaging and even obscene results would come up.
When the practice impacted the White House’s webpage for Obama, Google fixed it. But, the platform refused to resolve the issue when Santorum’s team complained. In some instances, Google’s interference backed one Democrat over another, leaning towards the more progressive candidate, though interestingly, not in the case of Bernie Sanders vs Clinton. In 2008, Google suspended the accounts of some pro-Hillary Clinton blogs who were critical of Barack Obama. Several of those blogs were listed at justsaynodeal.com.

Georgia: I’m guessing when it came time for the Clinton — Trump election, they leaned in favor of Clinton.
Megan: Definitely. Turns out the Alphabet company is also pretty good with numbers. According to data scientist and research psychologist Dr. Robert Epstein, who testified before Congress by the way, the impact of Google’s search algorithm was to “shift at least 2.6 million votes” to Clinton in 2016, though of course she still lost to Trump. But according to this it would have been by a wider margin without the Google effect.
What they are essentially alleging is Google manipulated search results to convince voters to pull the lever for Clinton. For example, everyone has used Google’s search bar before, and when you start to type in some text, Google begins to autofill suggestions. During the 2016 election, it would exclude potentially harmful autofill results for Hillary Clinton and would instead suggest things like “Hillary Clinton crime reform” or “Hillary Clinton India”. On the flip side, it would not filter results for Donald Trump or Bernie Sanders.
Google has repeatedly claimed these allegations are false. But when you to listen closely to this Project Veritas undercover recording from 2019 of Jen Gennai, the then Head of Responsible Innovation for Google, you hear a different story:

Irish accent aside, she said, “We’re also training our algorithms if 2016 happened again, would we have, would the outcome be different?” So suggesting they had already begun refining their results to alter election outcomes.
She went on to say: “Elizabeth Warren is saying that we should break up Google. And like, I love her, but she’s very misguided, like that will not make it better. It will make it worse, because now all these smaller companies who don’t have the same resources that we do will be charged with preventing the next Trump situation. It’s like a small company cannot do that.”
So again, a top Google executive saying Congress should not interfere with Google’s almost total dominance of the search engine industry because only Google can prevent someone like Donald Trump from being elected.
Georgia: So what is Google saying about this?
Megan: They haven’t responded at all yet. But some well known names in the tech world are backing MRC’s findings though. Elon Musk, for instance, posted on his platform, X: ““Google interferes to help Democrats thousands of times every election season!” Musk wrote on X. “This is to be expected when their censorship (aka ‘Trust &amp; Safety’) teams have far Left political views.”

And of course Google’s new AI tool came under fire recently for producing extremely biased results.
It&#8217;s also worth noting that a few weeks ago, another media analysis company, AllSides, studied Google’s news aggregator and found that <a href="https://nypost.com/2024/02/23/business/google-news-bias-skewed-even-further-left-in-2023-63-from-liberal-media-sources-only-6-from-the-right-analysis/">63 percent</a> of the news it recommended came from Left-leaning outlets and only 6 percent from right leaning outlets. And only 16 percent from outlets rated “center.”

Musk made the decision Thursday in response to the final results of a poll he tweeted Wednesday. The platform will begin unbanning accounts en masse, except for those who broke the law or engaged in excessive spam, next week, he tweeted in response to the results. Musk has already unbanned a number of popular accounts that were permanently suspended before he took over as &#8220;<a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/chief-twit-elon-musk-arrives-at-twitters-headquarters-let-that-sink-in" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Chief Twit</a>.&#8221;
On Wednesday, Musk tweeted a poll asking whether or not to unban users that had been permanently suspended. &#8220;Should Twitter offer a general amnesty to suspended accounts, provided that they have not broken the law or engaged in egregious spam?&#8221; he wrote.
More than three million users voted in the poll, and the vote was overwhelmingly in favor of amnesty; nearly three-quarters of voters, 72.4%, voted &#8220;yes,&#8221; while just 27.6% voted &#8220;no.&#8221;
&#8220;The people have spoken,&#8221; Musk wrote after the poll concluded. &#8220;Amnesty begins next week. Vox Populi, Vox Dei.&#8221;

Before the poll ended, Musk seemed to indicate that in effect, the platform would significantly curtail content moderation to target illegal content and increase transparency.

The blanket amnesty policy is the latest move in Musk&#8217;s effort to restore free speech on Twitter. Under his leadership, the social media giant has already restored the accounts of several high-profile conservative and right-leaning influencers. The list includes: Christian satire site <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/breaking-elon-musk-restores-the-babylon-bees-twitter-account-let-that-sink-in" target="_blank" rel="noopener">The Babylon Bee</a>, which likely played a role in Musk&#8217;s decision to buy Twitter in the first place;  clinical psychologist and DailyWire+ host <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/breaking-jordan-peterson-restored-to-twitter-by-elon-musk" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Dr. Jordan B. Despite restoring high-profile conservative users, Musk has not been immune from criticism from the right. “New Twitter policy is freedom of speech, but not freedom of reach,” Musk tweeted. “Negative/hate tweets will be max deboosted &amp; demonetized, so no ads or other revenue to Twitter. You won’t find the tweet unless you specifically seek it out, which is no different from rest of Internet.”
“The very concept of deboosting should not even exist because there shouldn’t be an algorithm on twitter,” one user fired back. “Your timeline should just show the tweets that are posted in the order they are posted. Period. Don’t like it? Block/unfollow.”

The multibillionaire is therefore locked in a legal battle, with the company trying to force the completion of the deal.
In an exchange on Twitter about his recent sale of $6.9 billion in Tesla stock, Musk explained that he is avoiding an “emergency sale” of shares in the “hopefully unlikely” event Twitter forces the deal to close.

Musk co-founded X.com as an online bank in 1999, which merged with Confinity in the following year to become PayPal. In 2017, Musk purchased the domain name from PayPal while citing “sentimental value,” according to <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/elon-musk-teases-xcom-website-possible-twitter-competitor-social-network-2022-8#">Business Insider</a>. The site currently shows nothing more than a small black “X” in the corner of the page.
The outlet noted that Musk referenced X.com at a recent shareholder meeting for Tesla. &#8220;I do sort of have a grander vision for what I thought X Corporation could have been back in the day,&#8221; Musk said. &#8220;It&#8217;s a pretty grand vision and of course that could be started from scratch but I think Twitter would accelerate that by three to five years.&#8221;
Musk, the world’s richest man, has <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/breaking-twitter-files-lawsuit-against-elon-musk-for-refusing-to-honor-his-obligations">said</a> that he does not “care about the economics” of the potential Twitter acquisition “at all,” repeatedly citing the need to address the lack of free expression on the platform.
“It’s important to the function of democracy, it’s important to the function of the United States as a free country and many other countries, and to help freedom in the world more broadly than in the U.S.,” Musk said. “Civilizational risk is decreased the more we can increase the trust of Twitter as a public platform, and so I do think this will be somewhat painful.”
The trial to determine the outcome of the acquisition deal is <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/its-happening-five-day-trial-date-set-for-elon-musk-twitter-dispute">scheduled</a> for October.
“Adoption of the merger agreement by our stockholders is the only remaining approval or regulatory condition to completing the merger under the merger agreement,” Twitter <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/twitter-misses-earnings-forecast-blames-elon-musk">argued</a> in a recent earnings report, which pinned a loss of $0.08 per share on the proceedings with Musk. “The exact timing of completion of the merger, if at all, cannot be predicted because the merger is subject to ongoing litigation, adoption of the merger agreement by our stockholders and the satisfaction of the remaining closing conditions.”
Meanwhile, Musk’s attorneys said in a July 8 letter that Twitter has neglected to provide accurate information about its user base.

Elon Musk responded to a tweet from The Daily Wire&#8217;s Ben Shapiro on Wednesday where he laid out what people should expect about the vision that he has for the platform in regard to free speech.
Musk, who fired off several tweets throughout the day, had his offer to buy Twitter approved by the company&#8217;s board of directors this week for $54.20 per share in a deal worth $44 billion.
&#8220;@elonmusk: Twitter should be politically neutral,&#8221; Shapiro tweeted. &#8220;WaPo and every Left-wing blue checkmark: REEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE.&#8221;
&#8220;You guys are giving away your game,&#8221; Shapiro added.

Musk added in a separate tweet, “For Twitter to deserve public trust, it must be politically neutral, which effectively means upsetting the far right and the far left equally.”
Earlier in the day, Musk mocked Twitter’s top lawyer, Vijaya Gadde, in a meme, which elicited a response from former Twitter CEO Dick Costolo, who wrote, &#8220;What&#8217;s going on? You&#8217;re making an executive at the company you just bought the target of harassment and threats.&#8221;
Costolo simultaneously tweeted, &#8220;Bullying is not leadership.&#8221;
Musk responded, &#8220;What are [you] talking about? I’m just saying Twitter needs to be politically neutral.&#8221;

Musk <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/elon-musk-weighs-in-on-twitter-censoring-hunter-biden-laptop-story-during-2020-election">weighed in</a> Tuesday on Twitter’s decision to censor an explosive story that was published by the New York Post about then-Democrat presidential nominee Joe Biden’s son, Hunter Biden, and a laptop that purportedly belongs to Hunter that is filled with content that was problematic for his father’s campaign.
“Vijaya Gadde, the top censorship advocate at Twitter who famously gaslit the world on Joe Rogan’s podcast and censored the Hunter Biden laptop story, is very upset about the @elonmusk takeover,” political commentator Saagar Enjeti wrote on Twitter.
Musk responded a short time later, writing: “Suspending the Twitter account of a major news organization for publishing a truthful story was obviously incredibly inappropriate.”
The head of Twitter’s Site Integrity Team told the Federal Election Commission (FEC) that the company censored the story because U.S. intelligence officials <a href="https://freebeacon.com/democrats/twitter-blocked-hunter-laptop-story-after-intelligence-officials-shared-hack-rumors/amp/">shared</a> “rumors” that Biden would be the target of a hack, despite no evidence emerging that the information in the New York Post’s reporting came from a hack.
Then-Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey <a href="https://nypost.com/2020/11/17/jack-dorsey-admits-lockout-of-the-post-was-a-mistake/">told</a> the House Energy and Commerce Committee during a hearing last year that the company made a “mistake” by censoring the story.

After news reports broke Monday about Tesla founder Elon Musk likely striking  a deal to purchase Twitter by as early as the end of the day, some liberals fumed publicly.
Race hustler Shaun King suggested South African-born Musk&#8217;s move to buy the platform was all about &#8220;white power.&#8221;
&#8220;At its root, [Elon Musk] wanting to purchase Twitter is not about left vs right,&#8221; he wrote. &#8220;It’s about white power.&#8221;
&#8220;The man was raised in Apartheid by a white nationalist,&#8221; King continued. &#8220;He’s upset that Twitter won’t allow white nationalists to target/harass people. That’s his definition of free speech.&#8221;
&#8220;Elon Musk has openly called himself a &#8216;free speech absolutist&#8217; and said that he wants to create a space where anything can be said about anyone,&#8221; the activist claimed. &#8220;That’s why white nationalists are giddy today.
