Michigan Democratic Gov. Gretchen Whitmer was blasted on social media on Thursday after appearing in a video that showed her feeding a chip to a woman on her knees.
The woman in the <a href="https://www.instagram.com/reel/DA8lS2sP-Rv/?igsh=cWVhN2dvaW5vaWxt" target="_blank" rel="noopener">video</a> is feminist author Liz Plank, who has worked at NBC News and Vox Media. In the 8-second clip, Whitmer, while wearing a Harris/Walz cap, feeds a Doritos chip to Plank, who is sitting on her knees in front of the Michigan governor. Plank captioned the video, &#8220;if he won&#8217;t, big gretch will.&#8221;
Whitmer <a href="https://thehill.com/homenews/4844547-big-gretch-nickname-michigan-whitmer/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">told</a> Democrats at the party&#8217;s convention in Chicago in August that &#8220;in Lansing, they call me governor, but in Detroit, I&#8217;m Big Gretch!&#8221;
Shortly after posting the clip, however, Plank edited her caption to say, &#8220;If he won’t, Gretchen Whitmer will. Chips aren’t just delicious, the CHIPS Act is a game-changer for U.S. tech and manufacturing, boosting domestic production of semiconductors to reduce reliance on foreign suppliers! Donald Trump would put that at risk.&#8221; The $52.7 billion CHIPS Act was <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/biden-signs-52-billion-semiconductor-bill-in-latest-push-to-fight-inflation" target="_blank" rel="noopener">signed</a> into law by President Joe Biden in August 2022, claiming it would fight inflation.

When they come back home and they leave their Stanley Cups lying around, do you ever think about getting a post-birth abortion?&#8221;
After laughing, Whitmer replied, &#8220;Thank you for raising that because there&#8217;s no such thing. So I think it&#8217;s really important for us to make sure people understand that.&#8221;

Wade that &#8220;men are direct beneficiaries of abortion rights in America.&#8221;
&#8220;Since many men seem to enjoy having sex with women, I would assume most men do not want to live in a world where they can’t access birth control,&#8221; Plank added.

Former U.S. Secretary of State <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/hillary-clinton" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Hillary Clinton</a> said during an interview over the weekend that there needed to be more regulation and censorship on the internet or else the government will lose &#8220;control.&#8221;
Clinton made the remarks during a Saturday appearance on CNN&#8217;s &#8220;Smerconish&#8221; with host Michael Smerconish while talking about social initiatives that Clinton wants to see society engage in.
&#8220;We can look at the state of California, the state of New York, I think some other states have also taken action,&#8221; Clinton began.
&#8220;But we need national action, and sadly, our Congress has been dysfunctional when it comes to addressing these threats to our children,&#8221; she said.
She said that the issue should be &#8220;at the top of every legislative political agenda.&#8221;
&#8220;We should be, in my view, repealing something called Section 230, which gave, you know, platforms on the internet immunity,&#8221; she said. &#8220;Because they were thought to be just pass-throughs, that they shouldn&#8217;t be judged for the content that is posted.&#8221;

One basic rule of survival is that, when a clearly deranged individual is ranting and raving in public, you shouldn&#8217;t engage with them. Generally speaking, there&#8217;s no benefit to doing so. You can&#8217;t persuade them not to be delusional, as much as you might like to. You can only make things worse.
Unfortunately, every now and then, despite your best efforts, sometimes this strategy doesn&#8217;t work out. We&#8217;ve all been there. You&#8217;re trying to mind your own business, and then out of nowhere, you catch a stranger&#8217;s eye. And then they might start talking about you. They might verbalize their unhinged delusions about who you are, or what you do for a living. And in those cases, sometimes, it can be impossible to resist saying a word or two in response. You know it won&#8217;t help anything, you know you probably shouldn&#8217;t do it, but it&#8217;s human nature to respond when someone — even a lunatic — is talking about you.
Last night I found myself in a situation just like this, when the &#8220;Kamala HQ&#8221; account — the official account of the Kamala Harris campaign — posted a message in response to a segment from <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/episode/ep-1449-how-the-fbi-is-willing-to-risk-your-safety-to-get-kamala-elected-member-exclusive" target="_blank" rel="noopener">my show yesterday</a>. This is the same account that even CNN <a href="https://www.cnn.com/2024/09/14/politics/fact-check-harris-campaign-social-media/index.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reports</a> is guilty of &#8220;repeatedly deceiving&#8221; people with obviously false posts. It&#8217;s the same account that Tim Pool is <a href="https://www.newsweek.com/tim-pool-kamala-harris-defamation-lawsuit-west-virginia-project-2025-1955775" target="_blank" rel="noopener">suing</a> because they wildly misrepresented something he said on his show. They&#8217;re pathological, delusional liars in every sense. And last night, totally unprovoked, they came after me.
Here&#8217;s what <a href="https://x.com/KamalaHQ/status/1838745780657537431" target="_blank" rel="noopener">they wrote</a>, in response to my show yesterday: &#8220;Top Trump operative, echoing Project 2025: Not only should the Department of Education be abolished, but the entire public school system should be abolished.&#8221;
Before I play the clip that they embedded in that tweet, I have to say a few things. First of all, it&#8217;d be news to the Trump campaign that I&#8217;m one of their &#8220;operatives.&#8221; I don&#8217;t work for the Trump campaign. I don&#8217;t coordinate with the Trump campaign. During the primary I supported Ron DeSantis. So in no sense am I a Trump campaign &#8220;operative.&#8221; At the same time, I have to admit that this particular lie is a little flattering. If they’re going to falsely label me a &#8220;Trump operative,&#8221; I’m glad they’ve promoted me to a &#8220;top operative&#8221; instead of a regular one, at least. I&#8217;m not some rank-and-file Trump operative over here. I&#8217;m the cream of the crop, in the eyes of the Kamala Harris campaign. It’s nice to finally be getting some damned respect around here, I have to say.
In any event, here&#8217;s the footage they embedded in their tweet, to demonstrate that I&#8217;m a &#8220;top Trump operative&#8221; who is &#8220;echoing Project 2025.&#8221; I&#8217;m responding here to a clip from a recent Trump rally, where he says the education system is failing in this country. Like everything else that this &#8220;Kamala HQ&#8221; account has uploaded in the past few weeks, this post backfired almost immediately. Pretty much every reply was along the lines of: &#8220;Yep, the public school system and the Department of Education are terrible and should be abolished.&#8221; The goal of the Kamala Harris campaign is to portray this as an inherently extreme position — as if the existence of the Department of Education is an inevitable fact of life in this country — but it&#8217;s not. For most of this country&#8217;s history, up until 1979, we haven&#8217;t had a Department of Education at all.

Actually, to be more precise, Andrew Johnson also <a href="https://www.politico.com/agenda/story/2015/09/department-of-education-history-000235/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">launched</a> a Department of Education back in 1867. It had just four employees — the commissioner and three clerks. And it had a very limited mandate. It was supposed to collect statistics on &#8220;the condition and progress of education in the United States&#8221; and then publish that information. But even with that limited mandate, politicians at the time thought the Department of Education had too much power. They didn&#8217;t see any reason for the department to exist at all. As Politico <a href="https://www.politico.com/agenda/story/2015/09/department-of-education-history-000235/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reported</a>, &#8220;Many in Congress &#8230; saw its existence as an unconstitutional power grab and worried that its data-gathering authority gave Washington a new and dangerous kind of leverage.&#8221;
Andrew Rogers, a Democrat from New Jersey, put it this way: &#8220;I am content .. to leave this matter of education where our fathers left it, where the history of our country left it, to the schools systems of the different towns, cities and states.&#8221;
Ultimately, the first Department of Education lasted just a year before Congress realized it was a horrible idea and abolished it. Instead of having a bloated and unnecessary federal bureaucracy spending tens of billions of dollars every year, education mostly remained a local concern from 1868 to 1979. And all told, we did pretty well as a country in that period. In fact, during that time frame, we went from horses to cars to planes to rocket ships flying to the moon. It was a period of human advancement never seen before. And we did it all without the Department of Education, if you can imagine.
Then, in 1979, after this period of uninterrupted prosperity and innovation, Jimmy Carter revived the federal Department of Education. And by that point, we didn&#8217;t have a lot of politicians in Washington anymore who wanted to limit their own power. Instead they wanted to expand it, at all costs. So the D.O.E. has stuck around, to disastrous results.
As the New York Sun <a href="https://www.discovery.org/education/2023/07/11/our-public-school-system-is-set-up-to-fail-and-its-succeeding/">reported last year</a>:
<blockquote>The recent report by the National Assessment of Educational Progress, sometimes referred to as the nation’s report card, is a devastating assessment of the condition of our nation’s schools. In short, there has been virtually no educational progress with our nation’s children in more than 30 years – and urban districts are the worst performers. &#8230; Virtually every major city shows declining proficiency for their students, even as school spending continues to increase.</blockquote>
Yes, you read that correctly. There has been virtually no educational progress in this country&#8217;s educational system in more than 30 years. The Department of Education has been around this entire time, and it hasn&#8217;t done anything to improve education. They&#8217;ve hired a bunch of LGBTQ overseers to police &#8220;misgendering&#8221; in kindergarten, but when it comes to education, it&#8217;s been a debacle.
Instead, in major school districts all over the country, corruption has flourished. Again from the Sun:
<blockquote>The report ranked the Detroit Public Schools as the worst performing of all 26 large city districts, with just 5 percent of their eighth-grade students rated proficient in reading and only 3 percent in math. What is surprising is the Detroit Public Schools Community District rated 99 percent of Detroit’s teachers as &#8216;highly effective&#8217; or &#8216;effective,&#8217; the two highest ratings given to teachers. An added conundrum is that Detroit public high schools received an &#8216;F&#8217; on student proficiency and yet received an &#8216;A&#8217; on graduation rates.</blockquote>
In other words, students are doing terribly — worse than they&#8217;ve done in decades. And yet the teachers are rating themselves highly. They&#8217;re graduating all of these students who can&#8217;t read, write, or do arithmetic. And despite all of this, <a href="https://www.bridgemi.com/talent-education/trump-wants-abolish-department-education-michigan-ready">billions of dollars</a> from the federal government flow into Michigan schools every year. The Department of Education isn&#8217;t just tolerating failure. It&#8217;s enabling it.
To be clear, the source for these claims isn&#8217;t Project 2025. It&#8217;s not me, either. The source for these claims is the Department of Education itself. The &#8220;National Assessment of Educational Progress,&#8221; or the nation&#8217;s report card, is both overseen and administered by the National Center for Education Statistics. And the National Center for Education Statistics is <a href="https://nces.ed.gov/nationsreportcard/about/">embedded within</a> the U.S. Department of Education. The Department of Education itself is saying that it&#8217;s doing a terrible job. They&#8217;re acknowledging that public schools are failing, too, which is why homeschooling is now more popular than ever.
How bad are things going in public schools, exactly? In 2023 The New York Times <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2023/06/21/us/naep-test-results-education.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reported</a>: &#8220;The math and reading performance of 13-year-olds in the United States has hit the lowest level in decades.&#8221; Again, their source is the Department of Education and the exam from the National Report Card. And there are reasons to believe these numbers from the national report card because:
<blockquote>Scores on the exam do not result in any rewards or punishments for students, teachers or schools, making them especially useful for research purposes, since there are fewer incentives to cheat or teach to the test.</blockquote>
If there were punishments for underperforming schools, then we can assume that a lot of teachers would give their students the answers. But apparently they&#8217;re not clever enough to do that — at least not yet. So the corruption and the incompetence are laid bare.
Out of curiosity, I just pulled up the homepage for the National Report Card. The <a href="https://www.nationsreportcard.gov/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">very first thing </a>on the website is a chart entitled, &#8220;Student Performance Across Subjects.&#8221; It shows &#8220;Changes in average scores and scores at selected percentiles, by subject and grade.&#8221; Here&#8217;s what it looks like:

As you can see, every single arrow except one is down — meaning there&#8217;s been a &#8220;Significant decrease compared to last assessment year,&#8221; according to the website. Average scores in math and reading are down for grades 4 through 8, in every percentile. The only exception is the 90th percentile in reading among 4th graders. That experienced &#8220;no significant difference&#8221; year-over-year. Not a single category improved.

I could go on and on about the various metrics that show our public school system, and the Department of Education, are both failing. Every single statistic like this is clear evidence that we need to scrap the system and start over. But the failures actually go even deeper than test scores and academic proficiency.
All the way back in 2004, the Department of Education released a comprehensive report <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/the-public-school-system-is-covering-up-a-massive-sex-abuse-scandal" target="_blank" rel="noopener">showing</a> that 10% of students in public schools nationwide, in grades K-12, were subjected to &#8220;sexual misconduct&#8221; by a school employee. That&#8217;s millions of children. It&#8217;s the kind of report you&#8217;d expect would lead to annual, if not monthly, follow-ups by the Department of Education. But as far as I can tell, they haven&#8217;t followed up at all with another comprehensive assessment. And as I discussed earlier this year, that&#8217;s not because sexual abuse in public schools has gone away. The rapid response team for Vice President Kamala Harris&#8217; presidential campaign stepped in it again on Tuesday — just over a week after even CNN was forced to slap @KamalaHQ with a brutal fact-check — when the account identified The Daily Wire&#8217;s Matt Walsh as a &#8220;top Trump operative.&#8221;
Walsh may be many things — a best-selling children&#8217;s author, a renowned DEI expert, and a documentarian to name a few — but a Trump operative he is not. Detroit Lions head coach Dan Campbell recently moved his family to a new Michigan home after his daughter&#8217;s classmate reportedly shared a social media post that revealed their address following the Lions&#8217; playoff loss to the San Francisco 49ers in January.
Police reports obtained by <a href="https://www.detroitnews.com/story/sports/nfl/lions/2024/09/23/dan-campbell-security-concerns-escalated-after-playoff-loss-to-49ers/75351868007/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">The Detroit News</a> show that the Campbell family had unwanted visitors come to their property beginning on New Year&#8217;s Eve 2023. The security concerns at the coach&#8217;s home intensified after Campbell was criticized for his play-calling in the Lions&#8217; NFC championship game loss on January 28.
After the Lions blew a 17-point lead and fell to the 49ers, a classmate of Campbell&#8217;s daughter shared a post on Snapchat that called the Lions coach a &#8220;dumb f***&#8221; and revealed the address of the Campbell family home in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan. Some people showed up at the home at around 11:00 p.m. and &#8220;scared&#8221; Campbell&#8217;s daughter, who was at the home with her boyfriend, according to the police report.
&#8220;Vehicles and people did show up outside their residence but did not necessarily enter the property,&#8221; an investigator wrote in a report. &#8220;The boyfriend went outside in his vehicle and flashed his headlights at anyone approaching causing these people to turn off and leave.&#8221;
&#8220;The Campbells were nervous for the safety of their daughter and instructed her to leave the home with her boyfriend for the evening,&#8221; the report added. &#8220;I assured the Campbells that we would send a patrol unit to the home and extra-patrol it for the evening.&#8221;
The coach listed the 7,800-square-foot home for $4.5 million last week, Crain&#8217;s Detroit Business <a href="https://www.crainsdetroit.com/real-estate/lions-coach-dan-campbell-selling-home-amid-security-concerns" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reported</a>. Campbell and his wife Holly said they &#8220;loved&#8221; the house.

Campbell&#8217;s daughter and the male classmate suspected of posting the family&#8217;s address attend an &#8220;exclusive private school,&#8221; according to The Detroit News. Investigators contacted a security official at the school to discuss the Snapchat post. The classmate&#8217;s mother told investigators that her son &#8220;re-posted&#8221; the Campbells&#8217; address and &#8220;the post was only up for 3 minutes.&#8221;
&#8220;[H]e had 30 views on the post, believed it was a fake address, and quickly removed it after he thought about it,&#8221; the mother added, according to the police report. The mother argued that the &#8220;address is publicly out there online and that her son did not contribute to anyone showing up.&#8221;
Investigators also questioned the male classmate who allegedly said he &#8220;found humor in the [Snapchat] post.&#8221;
Campbell was widely criticized after the Lions blew their lead against the 49ers with a chance to clinch the franchise&#8217;s first Super Bowl appearance. The coach opted to send the offense out on two critical 4th downs when the team was in field goal range. After leading 24-7 at halftime, the Lions lost 31-34.
Campbell was asked by a reporter last week about the recent security concerns at his home, but he declined to go into any details, saying, &#8220;No disrespect, man, I don&#8217;t even want to go there with any of it. It&#8217;s all good. Man, I&#8217;ve got a job to do. My primary job here is to coach this team and have them prepared every week. Missouri Attorney General Andrew Bailey announced this week that Missouri would move to obtain merits discovery in its lawsuit targeting the Biden-Harris administration for allegedly working with social media giants such as Meta, Twitter, and YouTube to censor and suppress free speech.
A motion for discovery requests the court to compel the opponent to relinquish information; thus, information the Biden-Harris administration may have wanted to conceal would be brought to light.
The lawsuit was originally filed by former Missouri Attorney General Eric Schmitt and Louisiana Attorney General Jeff Landry in 2022. Schmitt was elected to the United States Senate in 2023.

Social media giant <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/meta" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Meta</a> announced on Tuesday that its platform Instagram will be instituting new privacy settings that are &#8220;built-in&#8221; for teenagers&#8217; accounts.
After facing criticism for an apparent lack of safety surrounding minors&#8217; Instagram accounts, Meta <a href="https://about.fb.com/news/2024/09/instagram-teen-accounts/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a> the new &#8220;Teen Accounts&#8221; will protect young social media users while putting the parents in control. Teen Accounts will &#8220;limit who can contact them and the content they see&#8221; by keeping minors&#8217; accounts private, meaning other Instagram users cannot see posts from or contact a Teen Account unless the teenager accepts their follow requests.
&#8220;We know parents want to feel confident that their teens can use social media to connect with their friends and explore their interests, without having to worry about unsafe or inappropriate experiences. We understand parents’ concerns, and that’s why we’re reimagining our apps for teens with new Teen Accounts,&#8221; Meta said in a statement. &#8220;This new experience is designed to better support parents, and give them peace of mind that their teens are safe with the right protections in place.&#8221;
Earlier this year, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg — along with the leaders of TikTok and X — testified before Congress on how his social media empire was addressing concerns from users and parents about privacy and the effects of social media on children. In one <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/im-sorry-for-everything-mark-zuckerberg-faces-families-harmed-by-social-media" target="_blank" rel="noopener">tense exchange</a> during the hearing, Sen. Josh Hawley (R-MO) asked if Zuckerberg wanted to apologize to the families of children who were victimized by people on social media.
&#8220;I’m sorry for everything you have all been through. No one should go through the things that your families have suffered,” he told some of the families who were in attendance.
Under Instagram&#8217;s new Teen Accounts, teens will be shielded from any messages from people they are not &#8220;already connected to,&#8221; according to Meta. Additionally, Teen Accounts will be limited in the type of content they see on Instagram as the app&#8217;s &#8220;sensitive content control&#8221; will further limit content that shows &#8220;people fighting&#8221; or content that &#8220;promotes cosmetic procedures.&#8221;

Meta added that it will &#8220;automatically turn on the most restrictive version of our anti-bullying feature, Hidden Words, so that offensive words and phrases will be filtered out of teens’ comments and DM requests.&#8221; Teen users under 16 years old will now have to add a parent or guardian to their account if they want to change any of the built-in privacy settings.
Teen Accounts will include time limit reminders, telling young users to close out of the app after 60 minutes each day, and all notifications will be muted between 10 p.m. and 7 a.m.
Meta said it will enforce this new change by requiring teens to &#8220;verify their age in more places.&#8221;
&#8220;Teens may lie about their age and that’s why we’re requiring them to verify their age in more places, like if they attempt to use a new account with an adult birthday. We’re also building technology to proactively find accounts belonging to teens, even if the account lists an adult birthday,&#8221; Meta said. &#8220;This technology will allow us to proactively find these teens and place them in the same protections offered by Teen Account settings. We’ll start testing this change in the US early next year.&#8221;

A man who allegedly tackled a pro-Israel demonstrator has called for the destruction of the United States and refused to condemn <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/hamas" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Hamas</a>, a review of his social media history reveals.
Assault charges are pending against Caleb Gannon, 31, after The Daily Wire <a href="https://x.com/KassyAkiva/status/1834398215333900487">released an exclusive video</a> that shows him charging across a street and tackling Scott Hayes, a pro-Israel demonstrator, in Newton, Massachusetts. Gannon knocked Hayes to the ground and attacked him before Hayes, whose lawyers say that he acted in self-defense, shot him in the stomach. Hayes immediately tended to Gannon until emergency workers arrived.
At first, it was unclear why Gannon chose to charge the small, peaceful stand-in. But a review of Gannon’s social media activity reveals that he has called for the complete destruction of the United States and has refused to condemn Hamas, the Islamic terrorist organization behind the October 7th terror attack on Israel.
“The United States government is a rogue terrorist organization that does not represent its population. It must end,” Gannon, who has been charged with assault and battery, wrote in one of his extreme posts on X. Gannon&#8217;s X profile also features a Palestinian flag and the hashtag &#8220;#ActuallyAutistic.&#8221;
“All police precincts, military bases, and government offices must be liquidated immediately, and all resources from them redirected back into their communities,” he went on to say in the post pinned to the top of his profile.
Gannon, who says that he uses the pronouns “he/they/any,” also expressed support for Hamas and refused to condemn them.
“No, I don’t condemn Hamas,” he wrote, instead saying, “I condemn my family,” because they have been unwilling to “recognize the blatant genocide that’s been occurring for months in Palestine.”

Hayes was charged with assault and battery with a deadly weapon after he defended himself with a firearm. “They’re not above everyone else; they can’t just say, ‘We’re a big multi-national company, we can do whatever we like’ regardless of the harm that’s being caused,” he stated. “So we’ll look at this age-verification trial; we know that it’s not simple, and it’s not easy, otherwise governments would have responded before. Ron DeSantis signed into law <a href="https://www.flsenate.gov/Session/Bill/2024/3/BillText/er/PDF" target="_blank" rel="noopener">legislation</a> that banned children under the age of 14 from holding accounts on social media platforms such as services like TikTok and Instagram, enacting a strict social media bill that is likely to upend the lives of many young people. The legislation stated, “A social media platform shall prohibit a minor who is younger than 14 years of age from entering into a contract with a social media platform to become an account holder.”

The <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/fbi" target="_blank" rel="noopener">FBI</a> took a virtual beating on Thursday for an X post highlighting Director Christopher Wray&#8217;s &#8220;warning&#8221; to foreign actors who might have designs on meddling in American elections: &#8220;Knock it off.&#8221;
With a display of force not seen since President Joe Biden told Iran, &#8220;don&#8217;t&#8221; enlist terrorist proxies like Hamas, Hezbollah, and the Houthis to attack Israel — or since Vice President Kamala Harris warned migrants, &#8220;do not come&#8221; — Wray urged foreign adversaries to butt out and leave American elections alone.

Critics made it clear that they fully expected Wray&#8217;s directive to be equally as effective as Harris&#8217; and Biden&#8217;s had been — which is to say, not in the least — and they took to X to mock the bureau.

FBI Debuts Bold New Strategy In Combatting Foreign Election Meddling: 'Knock It Off'

“With great power comes great responsibility.” Long before Uncle Ben imparted this sage advice to Peter Parker, aka Spider-Man, in comics and movies, it was an accepted maxim in Western civilization known as “noblesse oblige.” Those with wealth, privilege, or position have an obligation to use the advantages of their birth to benefit those not similarly situated. As Americans, we are blessed with the greatest protection of individual rights known to man, none more important than the Constitution’s First Amendment, which lays freedom of speech, religion, press, and assembly as the bedrock upon which our republic rests. For nearly two and half centuries our nation has been a beacon and today, perhaps more than ever, that light must be shown to Brazil.
On Friday, Justice Alexandre de Moraes of the Brazilian Supreme Court ordered the “immediate, complete and total suspension of X’s operations” in the country after the social media platform refused to comply with government orders to shut down accounts which it had singled out for censorship.
The decision imposes a daily fine of R$50,000 (£6,800/almost $9,000) on individuals and companies that attempt to continue using X via a virtual private network.
The same justice has also issued an order to freeze the assets of the company Starlink, a satellite internet provider, following X’s refusal to comply with the censorship orders. Starlink is a subsidiary of SpaceX, an entirely different company in which <a href="https://www.ft.com/content/8789d9b8-a466-45c9-94b0-8e409683bb1e" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Elon Musk</a> is a 40% minority shareholder with 79% voting rights.
Monday, the Brazilian Supreme Court upheld the decision to ban X nationwide, further curtailing the right to free speech online.
Appealing to the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights to uphold freedom of expression, lawyers from free speech-supporting legal advocacy group Alliance Defending Freedom International petitioned the body – which has jurisdiction over Brazil under the American Convention on Human Rights – to intervene in the dire situation.
The orders to censor online content are supposedly based on combatting disinformation and fake news. But the state has targeted conservative voices for censorship, including blocking pro-life messages during the 2022 election campaign, which contained a message contrary to the pro-abortion position held by then-candidate Lula da Silva.
Other targeted speech included repudiations of the Nicaraguan government’s suppression of religious freedom and the concern it could happen in Brazil, and criticism of Lula’s promotion of sexually explicit content in school curricula.
Various journalists and public figures, including journalist Paulo Figueiredo and bestselling American author Michael Shellenberger, have already been targeted with secret criminal investigations for reporting on the authoritarian drift of the Brazilian courts and their censorship efforts.
Of course, America’s moral authority to lead the world against the rising global tide of censorship is only as strong as our commitment to uphold these fundamental human rights in our own country. Facebook/Meta founder Mark Zuckerberg recently <a href="https://www.reuters.com/technology/zuckerberg-says-biden-administration-pressured-meta-censor-covid-19-content-2024-08-27/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">sent a letter</a> to Congress admitting that his platform had censored important news stories under pressure from the Biden-Harris administration.
Last year, the U.S. House Subcommittee on the Weaponization of the Federal Government <a href="https://adfmedia.org/press-release/adf-testify-us-house-subcommittee-weaponization-federal-government?utm_source=dailywire&amp;utm_medium=oped" target="_blank" rel="noopener">revealed</a> that the U.S. Treasury Department conspired with major banks to monitor transactions of ordinary citizens making purchases at Dick’s Sporting Goods, Bass Pro Shops, and Cabela’s, and buying  “religious texts” like Bibles under the guise of identifying potential “domestic terrorists.” The federal government also flagged mainstream conservative organizations, and faith-based non-profit advocacy organizations like Alliance Defending Freedom, as potential “domestic terrorist” threats for surveillance by major banks.
Unfortunately, government suppression of disfavored viewpoints in America isn’t limited to big government in Washington, D.C., As a seventh grader, <a href="https://adflegal.org/press-release/adf-likely-appeal-there-are-only-two-genders-t-shirt-case?utm_source=dailywire&amp;utm_medium=oped" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Liam Morrison</a> wore a T-shirt to Nichols Middle School in Middleborough, Massachusetts, that read, “There are only two genders.” The principal of the school, along with a school counselor, pulled Liam out of class and ordered him to remove his shirt. After Liam politely declined, school officials said that he must remove the shirt, or he could not return to class. Attorneys from Alliance Defending Freedom are representing Liam in court to defend his, and every student’s, right to free speech.
The rising tide of censorship abroad has reached our shores; when it comes to protecting free speech from the authoritarian impulses of government officials, we now must stand resolute on both fronts. And whether it is in the halls of power in Brazil, Washington, D.C., the local city hall or school district, we cannot give an inch. It has been said that all the darkness in the world cannot withstand the light of a single candle. America must stoke the flame of liberty at home so that it might shine brightly for the world to see.
