Under War Secretary Pete Hegseth, America’s military is rediscovering its true mission of forging warriors, not social justice activists. He’s already purged divisive DEI and race-based admissions policies from our elite service academies, but one seemingly benign obstacle remains: academic accreditation. And like the wall on the training course, it must be overcome.
From West Point to the Air Force Academy, all five military service academies are accredited by a handful of private, unaccountable agencies with enormous influence over higher education. Unless the academies adopt these gatekeepers’ standards, their degrees may not be recognized when graduates pursue advanced degrees at civilian universities. That gives a handful of unelected, pro-DEI activists control over curriculum at schools founded to produce warfighters, including my alma mater, West Point.
That’s a serious problem.
West Point, established by Thomas Jefferson in 1802, along with the Naval Academy and the Merchant Marine Academy, are all accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education, which <a href="https://www.msche.org/standards/fourteenth-edition/">lists</a> “reflection on diversity, equity, and inclusion” among its “guiding principles.” That includes applying DEI to admissions targets, student assessments, and curriculum design. 
Never mind that the Supreme Court ruled race-based admissions unconstitutional in 2023, the commission insists that DEI reflection should “address disparate impacts on an increasingly diverse student population if discovered.” Its leadership reflects this far-left agenda, including commission president Heather Perfetti, a <a href="https://www.msche.org/president/">DEI champion</a>, and board members like Valerie Lehr, a professor of “LGBTQ politics” and author of Queer Family Values.
The Coast Guard Academy is accredited by the New England Commission of Higher Education, whose standards also reference DEI <a href="https://www.neche.org/wp-content/uploads/2020/12/Standards-for-Accreditation-2021.pdf">at least five times</a>. While the commission is reportedly considering ditching DEI in October, it remains under the control of a <a href="https://www.npr.org/sections/thetwo-way/2013/01/10/169037364/300-college-presidents-call-for-guns-to-be-banned-on-campuses-other-steps">gun control extremist</a> who urged the Obama administration to ban “military-style assault weapons” and has praised the children of illegal aliens as embodiments of “<a href="https://www.ajc.com/news/opinion/opinion-dreamer-collegians-embody-america-promise/2PfaNiACsrc1EKNVTsWCNL/">America’s promise</a>.”
The same holds true for many of the military’s <a href="https://www.restorethemilitary.com/professional-military-education/">Professional Military Education institutions</a>, full of leftist ideologues and subject to the same diversity accreditation mandates.
It’s bad enough that these commissions push radical ideologies on civilian universities. But America cannot afford to waste resources indoctrinating the next generation of military officers, especially as <a href="https://restoration-news.com/is-america-prepared-for-a-war-with-china">China poses a rising threat</a>.
The military’s biggest problem isn’t meeting diversity quotas; it’s restoring a warrior ethos to military culture. For decades, political mandates imposed by Democratic presidents undermined unit cohesion and combat readiness, while leaving the U.S. military dependent on foreign manufacturing to supply critical equipment. 
The organization I lead, Restoration of America, has laid out a blueprint for reenvisioning the military at <a href="https://www.restorethemilitary.com/">RestoretheMilitary.com</a>. It includes legislative solutions for reforming our service academies.
Fortunately, President Trump is turning things around. Under his direction, the War Department is reinstating physical fitness standards. He’s also removing woke senior officers, such as Merchant Marine Academy Superintendent Joanne Nunan, an <a href="https://restoration-news.com/exclusive-service-academy-s-woke-leadership-removed">anti-Christian bigot</a> he fired in June. In July, Army Secretary Dan Driscoll <a href="https://restoration-news.com/west-point-leadership-thumbs-its-nose-at-the-trump-administration">blocked</a> the West Point superintendent from hiring Biden’s “disinformation” czar to head the Social Studies Department.
These are major victories that should be celebrated, but we cannot rest on our laurels.
The next logical step is removing all outside influence over academy curricula by withdrawing the academies from these accreditors. The service academies should either be accredited by a new War Department accrediting body or accreditation should be eliminated altogether. Accreditation exists to prevent fraudsters from issuing worthless degrees from a phony “college,” and to ensure that students know the basics.
West Point, Annapolis, and the others have nothing to prove. They’ve demonstrated their excellence on the battlefield, time and again. It’s time to let them make warriors, not quotas.

Despite most companies moving away from virtue signaling, the NFL has decided to keep a frequently maligned feature this season. For the sixth straight season, all 32 teams will have messages painted in the end zones with social justice themes and undertones.
The NFL will again be advertising messages such as “End Racism,” “Stop Hate,” “Choose Love,” or “Inspire Change,” per <a href="https://apnews.com/article/nfl-end-zone-messages-end-racism-593ea0278bccb1d30f8c741ccadcf943">Associated Press</a>. Just like in years prior, the opposing end zone will bear the message, “It Takes All of Us.” The outlet noted that “Inspire Change” is the only update from last year, when the message said, “Vote.”
Players will also have the option to display these messages on their helmets.
“We’re working hand-in-hand with players, and alongside our clubs, to amplify player voices and underscore what is most important to them,” Anna Isaacson, NFL senior VP of social responsibility, told the AP. “For decades, the NFL and its players have been a unifying force in American culture and society that brings people of all cultures and backgrounds together to enjoy America’s most popular sport.”

“This is an honor and responsibility that the league takes seriously, which is why we actively invest in off-field programs and on-field initiatives that promote unity,” she added.
Reactions on social media were mostly negative, with followers questioning why the NFL was keeping up this campaign when so many other companies and organizations are moving in the opposite direction.
“Can&#8217;t we just escape politics and wokeism for a measly 3 hours and watch football? I&#8217;m out. I&#8217;m totally done with the NFL,” one reply <a href="https://x.com/PamelaHensley22/status/1957392218513129655">said</a>.
“It&#8217;s a shame, the actual game is lost on woke social practices.”
Many commenters also remarked on the current controversy about male cheerleaders being promoted as part of several NFL squads.
“Dumb. And also now with the male cheerleaders? Why?” one person <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/fan-backlash-against-male-nfl-cheerleaders-intensifies-vikings-issue-statement">wrote</a>.
While male cheerleaders have been part of NFL squads for several years, a clip of rookie cheerleader Blaize Shiek being introduced went viral on social media, igniting significant backlash. Shiek is one of two male cheerleaders on the Minnesota Vikings squad.
In 2022, Justine Lindsay became the first transgender-identifying man to become an NFL cheerleader with the Carolina Panthers.
“I have had so many parents of young kids in the trans community say thank you for what I’m doing and that their son or daughter is watching me,” Lindsay <a href="https://www.nfl.com/news/first-openly-transgender-nfl-cheerleader-justine-lindsay-a-face-of-the-possible">said</a> at the time, per NFL.com. “They are so pleased to see that I’m tearing down that wall.”
Lindsay will be cheering again for the Panthers for the 2025 season.

The Department of Education has given nearly $101 million in grants to train training K-12 social workers in leftist ideology, an education watchdog has found. 
Parents Defending Education unveiled its “GrantEd &#8211; Social Work”<a href="https://defendinged.org/investigations/granted-social-work/" target="_blank" rel="noopener"> report</a> on Wednesday, highlighting how universities taking federal dollars for their social work programs have embedded “social justice” into their curriculum. Since 2021, the Department of Education has given at least $100,964,880 in grants to 25 universities ostensibly for their “mental health” programs. Parents Defending Education said that the money is going to back programs that promote radical leftist ideology and seek to train leftist activists. 
“On the surface, these federal grants were given out to help mitigate mental health issues; in practice, the grant funds went to support programs that explicitly advance social justice ideologies based in critical race theory that include anti-racism and DEI,” the report found. “In fact, the vast majority of university social work programs that we reviewed prioritize anti-racism practices and social justice activism.”
The awards were given through the Mental Health Service Professional Demonstration <a href="https://www.ed.gov/grants-and-programs/grants-birth-grade-12/safe-supportive-schools/mental-health-service-professional-demonstration-grant-program#home" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Grant Program,</a> or the School-Based Mental Health Services <a href="https://www.ed.gov/grants-and-programs/grants-birth-grade-12/safe-supportive-schools/school-based-mental-health-services-grant-program" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Grant Program</a>.
Indiana University School of Social Work <a href="https://news.iu.edu/live/news/28268-school-of-social-work-will-use-57m-grant-to-help-schoo?_gl=1*1bat2v8*_gcl_au*MTE1Njk0NzQ3MS4xNzQyMzA3MzI5*_ga*MTg4MDYxNDk3OS4xNzQyMzA3MzI5*_ga_61CH0D2DQW*MTc0MjMxNjM1Ni4yLjEuMTc0MjMxNjM4MS4zNS4wLjA." target="_blank" rel="noopener">received</a> a $5.7 million grant from the Department of Education in May 2023 to expand their social worker training program and offered classes. 
At the same time, the school offered a <a href="https://iussw.sitehost.iu.edu/social_work/_documents/_syllabus/507%20Combined%20Syllabi.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">class</a> called “Diversity, Human Rights, and Social Justice,” which focuses on Critical Race Theory and white privilege. The goal of the class is for students to “to develop critical consciousness in order to gain competencies to address diversity, privilege and oppression in social work practice.”
In April 2023, Portland State University, which was <a href="https://ktvz.com/news/government-politics/2023/04/11/dept-of-education-awards-1-6-million-to-help-osu-psu-train-school-based-mental-health-professionals/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">awarded</a>  $1,189,801 by the Department of Education to increase the number of social workers. 
DEI principles are built into the school’s master of social worker program, the stated <a href="https://acrobat.adobe.com/link/track?uri=urn%3Aaaid%3Ascds%3AUS%3A42f35593-1dd0-3ca0-b163-1b9431eec989&amp;viewer%21megaVerb=group-discover" target="_blank" rel="noopener">goal</a> of which is to train social workers to dismantle “ systems of oppression; builds racial equity and social, political, and economic justice.” 
It’s purpose is to “deliver a social work education that is critically informed, theoretically driven, empirically supported, reflexive, ethical, vigilant and resistive to colonial, heteropatriarchal, classist, and white supremacist agendas.”
A spokeswoman for Portland State told The Daily Wire that the university existed &#8220;to advance social mobility and meet the current and future workforce needs of the state by making the transformative power of higher education available to anyone who wants to pursue a college degree.&#8221;
&#8220;We serve all learners and strive to create a welcoming campus environment for all,&#8221; the spokeswoman added. &#8220;We don&#8217;t believe the orders will impact any of our current programs or activities because we have always operated within the law. We will continue to work with internal and external partners to evaluate any potential impacts and provide guidance as needed.&#8221;
Other social work programs with similar classes include the University of New Hampshire ($3.8 million in federal <a href="https://www.wmur.com/article/unh-grant-mental-health-services-schools/43909663" target="_blank" rel="noopener">funding</a>), the University at Buffalo ($3.5 million in federal <a href="https://www.buffalo.edu/news/releases/2024/11/social-work-grant-address-shortage-rural-areas.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">funding</a>), and the University of Washington ($4.2 million in <a href="https://socialwork.uw.edu/news/university-washington-receives-42-million-grant-includes-health-equity-component/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">funding</a> with a health equity component). 
&#8220;The goal of UNH’s social work program is to prepare students for licensure and careers in social work,&#8221; a spokeswoman for the University of New Hampshire told The Daily Wire, saying that its programs adhered to the to the accreditation standards of the Council on Social Work Education.
Parents Defending Education said that more universities would be added to its report as it uncovers more grant recipients. 
Erika Sanzi, the director of outreach for Parents Defending Education, said that the Education Department should not be funding ideological social work programs. 
&#8220;School social workers did not use to spend years marinating in highly ideological courses about privilege, oppression, racial capitalism, and white supremacy, but today, in public and private universities, this is common practice,” Sanzi said. “While this is obviously disturbing, the fact that the U.S. Department of Education has been funding it since 2021 is a major red flag. How can a social worker help students become the best version of themselves if they see them as oppressors with unearned privilege?&#8221;
Under President Donald Trump, the Education Department has taken steps to slash DEI funding. Last month, the department announced that it had cut $600 million in grants with groups that trained teachers and educational agencies in “divisive ideologies.” 
Trump has also issued an executive order that directs federal funding be cut for entities pushing DEI initiatives.

As President Trump’s <a href="https://www.federalregister.gov/presidential-documents/executive-orders/donald-trump/2025" target="_blank" rel="noopener">executive orders</a> have mercifully begun dismantling discriminatory and illegal DEI and CRT programs throughout the government and our educational systems, we see a sharp increase in companies and organizations joining the already snowballing trend of <a href="https://www.forbes.com/sites/conormurray/2025/01/30/war-on-dei-deutsche-bank-stands-firmly-behind-diversity-program-as-these-major-organizations-drop-them/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">dumping DEI programs</a>. Perhaps more importantly, because these orders are merely following through with his successful campaign promises, they indicate that Americans themselves finally understand and reject the damage wrought by DEI.
If you needed further evidence that DEI is in its death throes, note how the DEI Industrial Complex defends DEI as they cover its rapid demise, feeling the need to proclaim anew the baseless tropes they used to help launch it originally. <a href="https://www.cbsnews.com/news/dei-diversity-equity-inclusion-corporate-programs/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">CBS</a>,<a href="https://abcnews.go.com/Politics/trumps-missing-point-dei-meritocracy-experts/story?id=117975699" target="_blank" rel="noopener"> ABC</a>,<a href="https://www.reuters.com/world/us/what-is-dei-practice-trump-is-trying-dismantle-2025-01-30/" target="_blank" rel="noopener"> Time</a>,<a href="https://www.reuters.com/world/us/what-is-dei-practice-trump-is-trying-dismantle-2025-01-30/" target="_blank" rel="noopener"> Reuters</a>, and others have been including something like a “What is DEI?” section to their latest articles, reasserting that DEI is an extension of civil rights, that it is about helping disadvantaged groups, or telling us that <a href="https://www.science.org/content/article/trump-executive-order-puts-stem-diversity-efforts-hold" target="_blank" rel="noopener">STEM research</a> and underrepresented scientists will suffer if DEI is eradicated.
Reuters offered this typical definition of DEI, “DEI programs have been part of workplace diversity efforts to ensure fairer representation for groups seen as historically marginalized, such as African Americans, LGBTQ+ community members, women, disabled people and other ethnic minorities in the United States.” Fortunately, despite the propaganda push, the DEI fairness mask has come off — and it is hopefully being fitted for a death mask.
<a href="https://starrs.us/dei-how-to-have-the-conversation/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">The hypocrisy of DEI</a> begins with the very words represented by that acronym — Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion.
<a href="https://www.city-journal.org/article/how-dei-corrupts-americas-universities">Christopher Rufo</a> has observed that, in practice, the policies bearing these labels usually promote precisely the opposite of what the words would imply. Diversity almost always involves implicit and explicit racial discrimination excluding or limiting some groups by their skin color or identity. Equity involves disparate and often unfair treatment of various identity groups (typically based on race, color, gender, and sex) in an attempt to equalize not opportunities, but outcomes. And Inclusion usually restricts ideas and people who oppose the prevailing doctrine of oppressed and oppressors.
DEI defenders commonly offer similar excuses as those for other failed attempts at Marxism. You might think that a piece titled <a href="https://hbr.org/2022/12/the-failure-of-the-dei-industrial-complex" target="_blank" rel="noopener">The Failure of the DEI Industrial Complex</a> in Harvard Business Review offers a sweeping indictment of DEI in general. Not quite. While admitting its undeniable failures in desired outcomes, it blames its downfall on the “lack of standards, consistency, and accountability among DEI practitioners.” In other words, the argument seems to be that it was a good idea, poorly implemented. Sound familiar?
The litany of slaughters, famines, gulags, and world wars was created by supposedly good ideas poorly implemented. If you start with flawed premises, things like standards, consistency and accountability only enhance the flaws. Such defective thinking includes believing that unequal outcomes are de facto evidence of discrimination; that diversity, not unity of shared values or esprit de corps is our strength; and that privilege and guilt are a function of DNA/skin color. In brief, poor implementation is the wrong epitaph.
As we close the casket, it is important to set the record straight. DEI is being buried today because enough Americans have finally realized that it has little to do with treating people fairly, combatting racism and sexism, helping the underserved, being more tolerant, or leveraging our differences. They now see that it is first and foremost about pitting groups against each other, lowering standards and eliminating meritocracy, and finding and magnifying perpetual grievances to benefit favored identity groups — and their facilitators.
They see that it grew into a <a href="https://www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archive/2023/05/dei-training-initiatives-consultants-companies-skepticism/674237/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">multi-billion dollar self-serving industry</a> that was worse than ineffective; it was actually <a href="https://www.heritage.org/education/commentary/dei-has-failed-we-do-not-need-more-it" target="_blank" rel="noopener">counterproductive</a> — damaging all of those areas it promised to improve — often involving active discrimination and racism.
They see that our military was most profoundly impacted by DEI because, unlike the civilian world, the command structure requires immediate implementation of the destructive policies, that in just a few short years the damage done there was <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/cigarettes-dei-and-our-military" target="_blank" rel="noopener">nothing short of tragic</a> — lowering standards, morale and combat readiness, and creating the biggest recruiting crisis in half a century.
They see that even in academia, the cradle of DEI, the multi-year, largest and most expensive DEI effort to date ($250m) at the University of Michigan utterly backfired per the <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2024/10/16/magazine/university-of-michigan-dei.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">New York Times</a>.
They also see that in reality DEI is simple racism — institutionalizing the favoring and disfavoring of certain individuals and groups based solely on their race and/or skin color, gender, or identity group.
Scholar and author <a href="https://starrs.us/the-dei-ruse-is-imploding/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Victor Davis Hanson</a> noted the beginning of DEI’s demise a year ago and rightly predicted, “In the end, DEI will implode because of its many contradictions: it is racist to the core; it is illegal and violates court decisions and the Constitution; it destroys meritocracy; and it is utterly incoherent in adjudicating who and who not deserve racial preferences.”
No, DEI is not dead yet, but it will likely be forced into academic hospice for a while — hopefully never to recover. The correct epitaph for DEI is that it is warmed over Marxism camouflaged as improved sensitivity and fairness. It is not on its death bed because of too much success too fast — too much fairness, too much racial harmony, too much improvement in outcomes of all forms. No, it is dying because, like all Marxism, it aims to foment distrust, chaos, resentment, guilt, hate, discrimination, and ultimately revolution; and most Americans have woken up to and reject that. Like every other attempt at implementation of Marxist principles, it may sound good in theory, but ultimately succumbs to reality.
Like all tyrants, DEI should not rest in peace because it should serve as yet another warning for what can happen even after the failings of countless other attempts at Marxism have been demonstrated. But regardless of how it leaves us, through burial or cremation, let’s get the eulogy right so that future generations may feel less inclined to resurrect its corpse.

Bank of America, Citigroup, Morgan Stanley, Goldman Sachs and JPMorgan Chase have just abandoned the Net Zero Banking Alliance. While it seems to be yet another dire omen for so-called environment, social and corporate governance (ESG) investing, it would be premature for people on the Right to imagine that the Left’s lock on the finance industry is ending.
ESG investing is notionally the idea that investors should consider the eponymous non-financial factors of ESG in making finance and investment decisions. The biggest part of “ESG” investing is the “E” (environment) and the biggest part of the “E” is climate and the dubious goal of “net zero emissions,” which I have previously written about <a href="https://www.wsj.com/articles/a-quiet-refutation-of-net-zero-climate-change-emissions-energy-global-warming-sec-goals-clean-power-11672262963?mod=opinion_lead_pos8" target="_blank" rel="noopener">here</a> and <a href="https://www.wsj.com/articles/net-zero-never-mind-environment-electrical-grid-carbon-emissions-climate-change-southern-co-energy-information-administration-db856556?mod=opinion_lead_pos10" target="_blank" rel="noopener">here</a>.
The phenomenon of ESG investing started out in the 1960s as “socially responsible investing” (SRI) investing, was rebranded as “corporate social responsibility” investing in the late 1990s and then rebranded again as ESG investing in the 2010s.
SRI/CSR/ESG investing was invented by the Left as a means of using stock ownership for political purposes. The practice started with labor unions in the 1960s. After the election of Ronald Reagan in 1980, a cadre of Left-wing activists got together to figure out how to use investment as a means of advancing the rest of the Left’s agenda.
In “Biz-War and the Out of Power Elite,&#8221; author Jarol B. Manheim writes, “22 young and wealthy individuals who shared a common concern about the conservative turn the country had taken … hit upon the idea to pool their [financial] resources and direct them at what they saw as socially and politically desirable programs&#8230;” aimed at corporations. Though it took time, this program succeeded beyond their wildest dreams. Meanwhile, the Right was largely asleep.
While Nobel laureate Milton Friedman prominently pushed back against SRI investing in his 1970 New York Times magazine article entitled, “The Social Responsibility of Business Is to Increase Its Profits,” there was no organized follow-up until 2005. At that point, a friend of mine and I launched a publicly traded mutual fund called the Free Enterprise Action Fund to push back against the success the Left was having in foisting its CSR agenda on publicly-traded companies.
While our fund had <a href="https://www.wsj.com/articles/SB114411692660116163" target="_blank" rel="noopener">success</a>, we didn’t have the resources to survive the catastrophic market conditions of the housing bubble collapse. The deep-pocketed Left, though, easily survived the tough market conditions and emerged on the other side with near total control of the finance industry with its rebranded and steroidal ESG investing strategy. Virtually all large banks and Wall Street firms joined one or more of the Net Zero Bank Alliance, Net Zero Asset Managers, Net Zero Insurance Alliance, Glasgow Financial Alliance for Net Zero (GFANZ), Climate Act 100+ and other similar groups.
But this success bred arrogance on the Left and awoke conservatives to a degree that the Free Enterprise Action Fund could only have dreamed about in the 2000s. By 2020, the ESG empire and its anti-fossil fuel, anti-conservative, DEI and other “woke” policies and practices had sufficiently alarmed red state politicians into pushback. State investigations, hearings and laws reining in ubiquitous ESG actors and activities popped up. Congress got involved. Then, ESG investing began to reveal itself as <a href="https://x.com/JunkScience/status/1866505394635645146" target="_blank" rel="noopener">a poor investment strategy.</a>

Perhaps most importantly, though, it had become increasingly clear that the ESG actors were illegally colluding as a cartel, possibly running afoul of anti-trust laws. While the ESG actors could possibly organize themselves into pushback against red states, the post-2024-election prospect of facing a federal government entirely controlled by Republicans would be too daunting. So, amid the holiday distractions, Bank of America, Citigroup, Morgan Stanley, Goldman Sachs and JPMorgan Chase all dropped out of the Net Zero Banking Alliance.
But those concerned about ESG would be wise not to declare victory and move on. The Left has acquired immense influence and power over the financial industry and has no intention of surrendering it. ESG may be dead as brand, but not as a strategy. The Left has been invested in SRI/CSR/ESG for a long time and for the long-term. While they will likely head underground for a few years, they will certainly be plotting a comeback that may start as soon as the 2026 elections.

A “social justice academy” run by a <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/california" target="_blank" rel="noopener">California</a> school district teaches elementary school kids to disavow “whiteness” and embrace transgender ideology, lesson plans shared with The Daily Wire show.
Every summer since 2021, the New Haven Unified School District in the San Francisco Bay area has trained rising 3rd-6th graders in leftist gender and racial politics during its annual &#8220;social justice academy.&#8221; Specific details about the academy’s curriculum were revealed in documents recently obtained from the school by Parents Defending Education through a public records request. 
“Scholars will define and critically think about Social Justice, identify social injustices in the community, and create opportunities for activism through writing, action, art,” <a href="https://dw-wp-production.imgix.net/2024/10/Copy-of-SJA-Proposal-Summer-2023_143fE3LTG_UM7Lks8vizgeUbDVVRlydGrWh4rPUVufU8.docx.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">according</a> to a plan from 2023 for the academy, which operates in deep blue Alameda County. 
The three-week academy, which costs the district around $20,000, was formed, in part, due to an Alameda County resolution that instructs educators to “help our children understand and react to racial differences, and to teach our youth how to speak up against injustice, racism and inequality.” 
Throughout the three-week course, students are taught the full gambit of leftist positions from “womxn rights” to Black Lives Matter and transgender ideology. The course comes as <a href="https://www.usnews.com/education/k12/california/districts/new-haven-unified-100683#:~:text=Test%20Scores%20at%20New%20Haven,above%20that%20level%20for%20math." target="_blank" rel="noopener">test scores</a> show that under half of elementary students in the district are proficient in math while only half are proficient in reading. 
A <a href="https://defendinged.org/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/Copy-of-SJA-Proposal-Summer-2023_143fE3LTG_UM7Lks8vizgeUbDVVRlydGrWh4rPUVufU8.docx.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">lesson plan</a> from week one shows that the academy focuses on issues of racial and sexual identity while reading from the book “Not My Idea: A Book About Whiteness.” The book says that “whiteness is a bad deal. It always was” and that “you can be white without signing on to whiteness.” 
The students are also taught that it is “white supremacy” that the 10 richest Americans are white and that governors were 96% white based on 2016-era statistics, <a href="https://defendinged.org/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/NEW-HAVEN-SOCIAL-JUSTICE-ACADEMY-2024-at-PIO.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">according</a> to planning materials for the academy from 2024. 
In another <a href="https://defendinged.org/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/Hire_Fire-Bias.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">exercise</a>, students were taught about stereotypes by being forced to fire people from a list of names, before gradually learning more about them, including their sexual identities and disabilities.

In week two of the academy, students are taught about Black Lives Matter, defunding the police, and taught to compare former President Donald Trump to Adolf Hitler.
The comparison between Trump and Hitler happens during a section on &#8220;dehumanizing language,&#8221; where students are shown an image of the two men with quotes. However, the quote attributed to Trump is completely fabricated. 
Trump is quoted in the image as saying “Undocumented immigrants are not human; they are animals.” While Trump has referred to violent gang members and murderers as “animals,” he never said all illegal immigrants are animals in a blanket manner.

The course also takes a pro-Palestinian bent, accusing Israel of being a colonialist power and pointing students to a <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ayY9DEnW8Gw&amp;feature=youtu.be">video</a> from the leftist outlet The Root called “Why Black people should care about Palestinian Liberation.”
Also during the <a href="https://defendinged.org/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/WEEK-2-Lessons-2023.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">second week</a>, students are taught about “defunding the police,” the history of the Black Lives Matter movement, and the “criminalization of BIPOC.” The course materials argue that school disciplinary practices create a “school-to-prison” pipeline that disproportionately impacts black students.

During week three of the social justice academy, students read from two books pushing transgender ideology. One book, “I Am Jazz,” is based on Jazz Jennings, a man who identifies as a woman. Jennings&#8217; parents moved him towards “gender-transition” at age 3, and he quickly became the star of a reality TV show that highlighted transgenderism. 
Students <a href="https://defendinged.org/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/LGBTQIA.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">are taught</a> that being “transgender is not a choice” and how to be an “LGBTQIA+ Ally.” Course materials list “transgender rights” as things like “access to medical care” and “all gender bathrooms.” 
Students are also taught about a Florida law that prohibited discussion of gender identity and sexual orientation for young children in classrooms. The legislation was derisively referred to as the “Don’t Say Gay” bill by the Left. 
New Haven Unified School District did not respond to requests for comment.
Erika Sanzi, the director of outreach for Parents Defending Education, said that the academy should be shut down. 
&#8220;This summer program should have been advertised as an indoctrination camp where ideologues who spell the word &#8216;women&#8217; with an x feed students propaganda about defunding the police, transgenderism, and oppression,” she told The Daily Wire. “At the same time that they lie to kids about book bans, the curriculum includes a children&#8217;s book that calls whiteness bad and equates it with the devil.”

A formerly tenured history professor at a community college in California will receive a multi-million dollar settlement after being investigated and disciplined for criticizing the school’s social justice initiatives.
Matthew Garrett, who previously taught at Bakersfield College, was fired last year following allegations of racial discrimination – which The Daily Wire <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/california-college-trustee-wanted-to-send-conservative-faculty-to-the-slaughterhouse-based-on-a-race-hoax" target="_blank" rel="noopener">proved were untrue</a>. He and the school have now agreed to a $2.4 million settlement, The College Fix <a href="https://www.thecollegefix.com/conservative-professor-disciplined-for-criticizing-dei-gets-2-4-million-to-settle-lawsuit-against-college/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reported</a>.
Garrett will receive $2,245,480 spread out over the next 20 years through monthly payments – which amounts to just over $9,000 a month. He will also receive an immediate one-time payment of $154,520 as “compensation for back wages and medical benefits since [his] dismissal,” the <a href="https://x.com/johndsailer/status/1817299566003147183?s=43&amp;t=zEuer7j4Ff8TVIcpiUO1KA" target="_blank" rel="noopener">settlement agreement</a> says.
For his part, Garrett agreed to resign from his position with the Kern Community College District, and administrators for the KCCD will withdraw and seal any accusations against him regarding “unprofessional conduct.”
“After five years of administrative misconduct, a decisive courtroom display exonerated me of all allegations and exposed that Kern Community College District engaged in flagrant retaliation for my questioning of partisan policies and wasteful expenditures,” Garrett told the Fix in an email. “Facing an imminent ruling in my favor and the prospect of paying millions of dollars in damages, KCCD had only one viable option: settlement. I am grateful to the many who stood by my side during this difficult time and invite them to join in our triumph.”
Garrett’s troubles began in 2019 when he <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p_8F3kxCt8E" target="_blank" rel="noopener">defended</a> free speech on campus, which some claimed was offensive.
During a meeting on December 13, 2022, John Corkins, vice president of the KCCD, threatened to take conservative faculty “to the slaughterhouse” based on false allegations of racism leveled against Garrett and a colleague from an October 11, 2022, diversity meeting.
The allegations centered around claims made by students who attended the meeting in support of professor Paula Parks, who obtained her doctorate in philosophy at Capella University and runs Bakersfield’s Umoja ASTEP program, described on <a href="https://www.bakersfieldcollege.edu/campus-life/student-communities/african-american-initiatives/umoja-astep.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">its website</a> as “a program that integrates academics, support services and African-American culture.”
After that meeting, Parks’ students began publicly claiming that their mentor was smeared by Matthew Garrett, who has a doctorate in American history from Arizona State University and teaches history and ethnic studies at Bakersfield. One student, Jordyn Davis, submitted <a href="https://committees.kccd.edu/sites/committees.kccd.edu/files/PublicComments-JordynDavis-19oct22%20.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">a written comment</a> to Bakersfield’s academic senate with an alleged direct quote of Garrett saying, “Dr. Parks’ way of teaching is not…” and saying this made her feel “a mixture of confusion and concern.”
In <a href="https://youtube.com/watch?v=ftRes8eeQWs&amp;si=EnSIkaIECMiOmarE&amp;t=1458" target="_blank" rel="noopener">additional comments</a> to the KCCD Board of Trustees in December, Davis claimed that Garrett “went on to insult Dr. Parks,” which she insisted “felt very personal and came from a place of hate.” In both instances, Davis began her remarks by saying Garrett “insisted” that a survey purporting to show students of color experienced “racial stress,” “race-based physical aggression,” and “microaggressions” was incorrect.
Audio of the October 11 meeting, in which Garrett was alleged to have made the comments, shows that Garrett did ask whether the underlying survey was valid and suggested doing another survey since the original was conducted during the pandemic when students weren’t on campus. He also suggested at the beginning of his comments that he was “concerned about repeated appeals to popularity as evidence of truth” and indicated to Andrea Thorson, Bakersfield’s dean of instruction, that she teaches in her class that this is bad logic. But he did not mention Parks during his remarks.
Two other students also submitted comments to the academic senate. One claimed she felt “very uncomfortable” after walking into the room and seeing “a few of the faculty’s faces.” She also claimed that she “felt” that if she were to take those professors’ classes, she “would fail in the classes because of the color of my skin.”
Another accusation centered around comments made by Ximena Da Silva Tavares, a research assistant who received her doctor of philosophy from Caltech. Parks read an accusation from a student at the December board meeting who claimed Da Silva Tavares said during the October meeting that racism doesn’t exist. Da Silva Tavares brought up her own concerns about how the survey showing students of color were the victims of racism on campus was collected and whether there really was an issue of racism on campus. She ended her remarks by saying she and other professors “question the solutions of the problems” and “question even the problems that you’re saying that we have.”
When asked about the allegations against Garrett and other members of the diversity committee, Parks spoke about the “trauma” her students endured at the meeting.
“When I take students to a campus committee meeting, I want them to be positively educated about how an educational institution works, not traumatized and questioning whether they want to enter the profession,” Parks said.
Parks was then asked how her students were “traumatized.” She didn’t respond.
“Call me old fashioned but I believe in truth and evidence-based reasoning,” Garrett told The Daily Wire last year. “In an age of emotional incontinence we need to remember that while feelings do matter they cannot displace facts.”

One of the beauties of life is the simple fact that no matter how stupid things get, reality always wins.
Whether your personal life or whether politics writ broadly, the simple fact of the matter is, eventually, you are going to run up against reality — and reality is going to win.
That doesn&#8217;t mean bad political ideas can&#8217;t emerge victorious in the short- or even the mid-term.
It does mean the realities of human nature, the realities of the world surrounding you, don&#8217;t just go away. And ultimately, those policies will fail dramatically. The dumber the policies, the faster they tend to fail.
One of those dumb ideas that has obviously taken center stage of late has been the dumb idea of woke.

Woke is a foolish idea. Now, what exactly is wokeness? Wokeness is the basic idea that if there is any sort of disparity between group outcomes in American life, that group disparity is due to discrimination. The only corrective is, therefore, reverse discrimination or some form of discrimination that is going to equalize the outcomes of the various groups.
We have seen a wide variety of policies that have been implemented in order to close all of these gaps. The Quest for Cosmic Justice — as the great thinker of our time Thomas Sowell has put it — is a foolish quest. It is not something that can be solved because the reality is the vast majority of group gaps are either inborn or they are the result of culture and environment — because those are all the factors that there are.
That does not mean every result is the result of inborn differences. Differences in intellectual outcome very often are about educational or cultural differences as opposed to, for example, height differentials between particular groups; those are about genetics. This happens throughout life.
Looking at the rationales for why things are different in terms of outcomes between groups can be a good way of crafting good policy — but we&#8217;ve thrown all of that out in favor of stupidity. Now, we are going to educate our children in the stupidity, which does not reflect reality. We are seeing the results of that.
The <a href="https://www.sfchronicle.com/bayarea/article/woke-kindergarten-glassbrook-hayward-18635504.php" target="_blank" rel="noopener">San Francisco Chronicle</a> reported on this:
<blockquote>A Hayward elementary school struggling to boost low test scores and dismal student attendance is spending $250,000 in federal money for an organization called Woke Kindergarten to train teachers to confront white supremacy, disrupt racism and oppression and remove those barriers to learning.
The Woke Kindergarten sessions train teachers on concepts and curriculum that’s available to use in classrooms with any of Glassbrook Elementary’s 474 students. The sessions are funded through a federal program meant to help the country’s lowest-performing schools boost student achievement. </blockquote>
The basic theory behind this program is that if you just teach kids self-esteem, they will magically become smarter and better performing. If you teach them about the radical injustices of the life they lead in the freest country in the history of the world, then they will magically perform better.
Only one problem: It fails because reality always wins.
The Chronicle continues, <a href="https://jessesingal.substack.com/p/woke-kindergarten-is-capitalism-at#:~:text=A%20Hayward%20elementary%20school%20struggling,remove%20those%20barriers%20to%20learning" target="_blank" rel="noopener">saying</a>:
<blockquote>But two years into the three-year contract with Woke Kindergarten, a for-profit company, student achievement at Glassbrook has fallen, prompting some teachers to question whether the money was well spent given the needs of the students, who are predominantly low-income. Two-thirds of the students are English learners and more than 80% are Hispanic/Latino. </blockquote>
This is not a particular shock because woke kindergarten is a stupid idea. Teaching kids terrible ideas is likely to make them perform worse, not better. District officials defended the program, saying the kindergarten did what it was hired to do.
That&#8217;s true, albeit not in the way they intended. They made the scores lower. It made things worse.

One of the most amazing attributes of the nonprofit world, and this is true virtually across the board, is that nonprofits are constantly exacerbating the problems they are supposed to fight so they can raise money to fight those problems.
This happens all the time in nonprofit land. One of the jobs of politically motivated people on the Left is to exacerbate inequalities so as to claim inequity.
That is the goal. Because if at any point those inequalities actually narrowed as a result of freedom and good incentive structures, then what would they do for a living?

A Hollywood social justice activist was killed on Monday after a homeless woman allegedly broke into his home and shot him in the head, according to reports.
Michael Latt, 33, who founded the charity organization <a href="https://www.michaellatt.com/lead-with-love.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Lead With Love</a> to support &#8220;influential women and artists of color,&#8221; died from injuries at a local hospital after authorities <a href="https://www.foxnews.com/us/hollywood-social-justice-warrior-killed-by-homeless-woman-own-home" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reportedly</a> discovered him in his $800,000 one-bedroom apartment in the Mid-Wilshire neighborhood earlier this week.
Latt&#8217;s next-door neighbor <a href="https://ktla.com/news/local-news/homeless-woman-arrested-in-mid-wilshire-murder/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">told</a> local media she witnesses a female standing in the walkway with her hands up when police took the woman into custody.
“It was really weird because I didn’t hear anything,” Avarie Shevin said. “Like, no gunshot. No arguing, nothing, and it’s the kind of thing where if there’s a gunshot a mile away, I will hear it. So how did I not hear it right there?”
&#8220;I can&#8217;t wrap my brain around what could&#8217;ve happened that caused him to be shot and killed,&#8221; she told the station. &#8220;I keep picturing his face, and I cannot believe he has passed.&#8221;
The Los Angeles Police Department <a href="https://www.lapdonline.org/newsroom/homicide-suspect-arrested-nr23766mo/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">identified</a> the homicide suspect as 36-year-old Jameelah Elena Michl, who police said lived in her car.
The Los Angeles District Attorney’s office filed charges of murder and burglary with a firearm enhancement against Michl, according to police.
Michl is currently being held on $3 million bail. Her vehicle was also booked into evidence, according to police.
Although the motive was not immediately clear, police reportedly believe the shooting was a random act of violence.
Latt comes from a family involved in the Hollywood industry. He is the son of film producer David Latt and Michelle Satter, the founding senior director at the Sundance Institute.
Satter paid tribute to her son on social media on Wednesday.
&#8220;Our beloved son, brother, grandson, fiancé Michael Latt, fell victim to a tragic act of violence Monday night,&#8221; Satter wrote. &#8220;Our family, Michael&#8217;s extraordinary friends and colleagues are shattered by the profound grief of losing our Michael.&#8221;
&#8220;He devoted his career to supporting others, championing organizations that raised up women and artists of color, along with leveraging storytelling, art and various mediums to create enduring change and instill communities with hope, love and inspiration,&#8221; she continued. &#8220;Michael will never be forgotten and we can all carry on his legacy of love, compassion and fierce dedication to positive and lasting change.&#8221;

According to the Los Angeles Times, Latt <a href="https://www.latimes.com/entertainment-arts/story/2023-11-29/michael-latt-social-justice-advocate-with-deep-ties-to-hollywood-dies-at-33" target="_blank" rel="noopener">graduated</a> from Chapman University with a public relations and advertising degree. He spent a number of years working in entertainment marketing, including work for the social justice organization Blackout for Human Rights, which prompted him to become more involved in activism.
&#8220;The moment I realized that I could use my skill set for social good, I decided to dedicate the rest of my career to helping others, empowering storytellers of color, and fighting injustice wherever it stands,&#8221; he told Forbes.

When asked what the greatest dangers of social justice ideologies were, Sowell pointed to the belief held by many on the Left that the government should be used to make everything equal.
“When you simply give more and more power to the government on the illusion that they can [make everything equal], all that you&#8217;re doing is setting yourself for more and more of your freedom to be taken away by other people,” he said.
Shapiro and Sowell also discussed the social justice fallacy of assuming that disparity was caused by discrimination. Sowell pointed to the representation of black players in professional basketball and white tennis players as examples of disparities that were not caused by anything malicious.

The two also discussed what the future would look like and how to fight back against the spread of social justice ideology, especially among young people.
Shapiro pointed to polling showing that young generations had embraced the social justice mindset, saying that “it&#8217;s hard to be optimistic in the face of a lot of the polling statistics that are showing that younger Americans believe an enormous number of these fallacies.”
Sowell responded by saying that educational resources not steeped in leftist ideology needed to be made available to young people.
“What I think needs to be done is to open up some other avenue of information for young people that they won&#8217;t get the constant propaganda indoctrination that they find in most colleges around the country,” Sowell said, pointing to free online courses from Hillsdale College.
“I think what needs to be done is for someone to organize a central place where people can hear other ideas that they are not likely to hear in the major institutions &#8212; whether someone will be able to do that or not, it remains to be seen,” Sowell added.
