Prime Minister Robert Fico of Slovakia is expected to survive after he was shot five times in a <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/slovakias-prime-minister-wounded-in-shooting" target="_blank" rel="noopener">suspected assassination attempt</a> and underwent emergency surgery on Wednesday.
Fico, a 59-year-old Left-wing populist who was elected prime minister last year, was targeted in what Slovak officials described as a &#8220;politically motivated&#8221; attack after a government meeting in Handlova, CNN <a href="https://www.cnn.com/2024/05/15/europe/slovakia-prime-minister-fico-shooting-intl/index.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reported</a>. The suspected gunman was among a small crowd of people waiting to greet the prime minister and fired at Fico from close range. Deputy Prime Minister Tomáš Taraba <a href="https://www.cnn.com/europe/live-news/robert-fico-slovakia-prime-minister-shooting-05-15-24/h_afa2aee31724320e229f78cd0605d736" target="_blank" rel="noopener">told</a> BBC that Fico &#8220;was heavily injured&#8221; by a bullet that “went through the stomach&#8221; and then another bullet that &#8220;hit the joints.”
“Fortunately, as far as I know, the operation went well and I guess in the end he will survive,&#8221; Taraba added.
Video of the attack showed the moment the suspect opened fire on Fico from behind a barrier as the prime minister was walking toward a group of supporters. The alleged gunman was arrested and identified by <a href="https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-13423199/slovakia-prime-minister-robert-fico-shot-suspect-son.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">multiple</a> media <a href="https://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/europe/slovakia-robert-fico-prime-minister-shooting-latest-updates-b2545976.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">outlets</a> as 71-year-old Juraj Cintula, a leftist writer and activist who founded an &#8220;anti-violence&#8221; movement in 2015. Authorities have <a href="https://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-69019121" target="_blank" rel="noopener">not yet confirmed</a> the identity of the suspect.

Fico has been criticized by his opponents as being a Kremlin sympathizer. The prime minister, who is the most powerful lawmaker in Slovakia, won his election last October on a campaign that criticized the country&#8217;s aid to Ukraine throughout the Russia-Ukraine war. Fico kept his campaign promise and announced shortly after becoming prime minister that Slovakia would end its military aid for Ukraine while maintaining humanitarian assistance for its European neighbor.
Fico previously served as prime minister from 2006 to 2010 and then again from 2012 to 2018 before he resigned amid a corruption scandal after the murder of investigative journalist Jan Kuciak and his fiancée, Martina Kušnírová. Kuciak focused much of his reporting on Slovakia&#8217;s political elite, CNN reported.
The assassination attempt on Fico shocked leaders in Slovakia and around the world. Slovak President Zuzana Caputova said she was &#8220;utterly shocked&#8221; by the attack and condemned it &#8220;in strongest possible terms.&#8221;
Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban added, “I was deeply shocked by the heinous attack against my friend, Prime Minister Robert Fico. We pray for his health and quick recovery! God bless him and his country!”

Jill and I are praying for a swift recovery, and our thoughts are with his family and the people of Slovakia. We condemn this horrific act of violence. Our embassy is in close touch with the government of Slovakia and ready to assist.&#8221;

A shooting in <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/slovakia" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Slovakia</a> left the central European country&#8217;s populist prime minister, Robert Fico, wounded on Wednesday, according to multiple reports.
The BBC <a href="https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/cg6761ggxz1o" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a> that Fico, 59, was in life-threatening condition and taken to a hospital after being attacked outside a community center in the town of Handlova while meeting with supporters.
&#8220;Utterly shocked by today&#8217;s brutal attack on #Slovakia’s Prime Minister Robert Fico, which I condemn in strongest possible terms,&#8221; Slovak President Zuzana Caputova <a href="https://twitter.com/ZuzanaCaputova/status/1790742825732092015" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a> in a post to X.
&#8220;I wish him lot of strength in this critical moment and early recovery,&#8221; she added. &#8220;My thoughts are also with his family and close ones.&#8221;
According to <a href="https://apnews.com/article/slovakia-prime-minister-shooting-robert-fico-handlova-bdaaf0bba01035a700145a67d871a482" target="_blank" rel="noopener">the Associated Press</a>, a TV station in Slovakia said a suspect had been detained. The suspect&#8217;s identity was not immediately known.
Video posted to social media appeared to show the moment security guards frantically moved Fico into a car after the shooting.

After resigning as prime minister in 2018 amid a murder and corruption scandal, Fico returned to power last fall when his Smer party <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/world/2023/09/30/slovakia-election-results-fico-simecka/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">bested</a> the liberal Progressive Slovakia party in a parliamentary election and formed a coalition government.
Making good on promises made during his campaign, Fico <a href="https://www.barrons.com/news/slovakia-announces-halt-of-military-aid-to-ukraine-02568de7#" target="_blank" rel="noopener">announced</a> in October that Slovakia would stop sending military aid to its neighbor, Ukraine, but continue humanitarian assistance.
Leaders across Europe responded to the shooting on Wednesday, including European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.

Just as many predicted, several countries are beginning to follow the United States&#8217; lead and move their Israeli embassies to Jerusalem in defiance of the European Union.
<a href="http://www.jewishpress.com/news/breaking-news/slovakia-moving-embassy-to-jerusalem/2018/07/04/">According to Jewish Press</a>, Andrej Danno, the Slovak National Council, told Reuven Rivlin, the President of Israel, that Slovakia plans to move their embassy to Jerusalem.
The decision was made by the Prime Minister of Slovakia, Peter Pellegrini.
Slovakia will be the sixth country to move their embassy to Jerusalem following the Trump administration&#8217;s decision to make the politically significant change.
Both Guatemala and Paraguay moved their Israeli Embassy to Jerusalem in May, just weeks after the United States. 
The president of Colombia, Ivan Duque, <a href="https://www.timesofisrael.com/new-colombian-president-open-to-moving-embassy-to-jerusalem/">also flirted with the idea</a> of moving the Colombian embassy last month, saying he would not rule out &#8220;the possibility of placing the diplomatic seat in Jerusalem.&#8221;
Following President Trump&#8217;s announcement of the embassy move last year, both the EU and UN <a href="https://www.reuters.com/article/us-usa-trump-israel-jerusalem-reaction/arabs-europe-u-n-reject-trumps-recognition-of-jerusalem-as-israeli-capital-idUSKBN1E0312">expressed their disagreement</a>.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu blasted the European Union and former U.S. President Barack Hussein Obama over their lack of support for his home country during a private meeting with the leaders of Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, and Slovakia. 
The Haaretz newspaper released <a href="http://www.haaretz.com/israel-news/1.802143">recorded audio</a> of the remarks where Netanyahu is heard saying that there was &#8220;a big problem&#8221; during Obama&#8217;s tenure in the White House. 
Netanyahu said to his fellow leaders, &#8220;The European Union is the only association of countries in the world that conditions the relations with Israel, that produces technology and every area, on political conditions. The only ones! Nobody does it.&#8221; He emphasizes, &#8220;It&#8217;s crazy. It&#8217;s actually crazy.&#8221;
He adds, &#8220;I think that if I can suggest that what comes out of this meeting is your ability perhaps to communicate to your colleagues in other parts of Europe: help Europe, twice. Don&#8217;t undermine that one Western country that defends European values and European interests and prevents.&#8221;
Netanyahu explained, &#8220;There is no logic here.&#8221; He continued, &#8220;The EU is undermining its security by undermining Israel. Europe is undermining its progress by undermining its connection with Israeli innovation by a crazy attempt to create conditions.&#8221; 
Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban cut in, &#8220;Mr. Netanyahu, the European Union is even more unique. The EU places conditions on the ones already inside the EU, not only the countries on the outside.&#8221; That was a joke referencing the EU putting sanctions on Hungary for its opposition to George Soros&#8217; funded immigration <a href="http://www.conservativenews.com/article/3573/hungary-takes-stand-against-socialist">efforts</a>.
Netanyahu replied, &#8220;I think Europe has to decide if it wants to live and thrive or if it wants to shrivel and disappear.&#8221;
He told them, &#8220;I am not very politically correct. I know that&#8217;s a shock to some of you. It&#8217;s a joke. But the truth is the truth, both about Europe&#8217;s security and Europe&#8217;s economic future. Both of these concerns mandate a different policy toward Israel.&#8221;
Israel&#8217;s PM said, &#8220;We are part of the European culture. Europe ends in Israel. East of Israel, there is no more Europe.&#8221; 
Netanyahu praised Christians for their support of Israel&#8217;s statehood. &#8220;We have no greater friends than the Christians who support Israel around the world. Not only the evangelists. If I go to Brazil, I&#8217;ll be greeted there with more enthusiasm than at the Likud party center.&#8221;
He criticized the Obama Administration and its weak foreign policy toward the Middle East. 
&#8220;We had a big problem [in America].&#8221; He adds, &#8220;I think it&#8217;s different now. Vis-a-vis Iran, there is a stronger position. The U.S. is more engaged in the region and conducting more bombings [in Syria]. It is a positive thing. I think we&#8217;re ok on ISIS. We&#8217;re not okay on Iran.&#8221; 
Netanyahu also mentioned Israel&#8217;s own wall and the nation&#8217;s efforts in blocking terrorist organizations in the region from getting weapons.
&#8220;We blocked the border not only in Egypt but in the Golan Heights,&#8221; he explained. &#8220;We built the wall because there was a problem with ISIS and Iran trying to build a terror front there. I told Putin, when we see them transferring weapons to Hezbollah, we will hurt them. We did it dozens of times.&#8221;

Slovakian Prime Minister Robert Fico, taking a hard stance after the reports of sexual assaults in Cologne and Hamburg, has made it clear he <a href="http://www.jewsnews.co.il/2016/01/10/after-the-sexual-assaults-on-new-years-slovakian-pm-vows-to-not-even-take-one-muslim-refugee/">will fight</a> against allowing Muslim refugees into his country. He stated, “We don’t want something like what happened in Germany taking place in Slovakia,” adding that Slovakia must “prevent [its] women from being molested in public places.”
<a href="http://www.dw.com/en/reports-asylum-seekers-among-cologne-attacks-suspects/a-18966406">According</a> to the local German newspaper “Kölner Stadt-Anzeiger” and the Sunday edition of Die Welt, Cologne police believe some of the men who assaulted women in New Year’s Eve were Muslim refugees from Syria.
Fico said bluntly that Bratislava would ” never make a voluntary decision that would lead to the formation of a unified Muslim community in Slovakia … Multi-culturalism is a fiction. Once you let migrants in, you can face such problems.”
Slovakia, which is two-thirds Catholic, only has 5.4 million people, yet the European Commission wants to force Slovakia to accept 802 migrants. Fico and his government have sued the Commission in order to stop their plans.

Fico is not alone; Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban has already <a href="http://www.dw.com/en/hungary-sues-eu-at-european-court-of-justice-over-migrant-quotas/a-18892790">filed a lawsuit</a> against the EU to stop the immigration of hundreds of thousands of refugees. Budapest has also launched a nationwide media campaign against the quota system. Orban has<a href="http://www.dw.com/en/hungary-ready-to-sue-eu-over-migrant-plan/a-18856469"> stated</a>, &#8220;As long as this government is breathing, there won&#8217;t be any quota, or any (rejected asylum applicants) taken back. We will decide who we want to let in who we want to live with.&#8221;
Last summer, Hungary started building a razor-wire barrier along its border with Serbia and Croatia to funnel migrants through specific checkpoints; migrants started flowing toward Austria as a result.
