California Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom signed a formal apology on Thursday for the state&#8217;s &#8220;role&#8221; in slavery just one day after the governor vetoed two reparations bills.
Assembly Bill 3089, which Newsom signed, mandated that the state offer a formal apology along with memorializing the apology in a plaque on the state Capitol, the Los Angeles Times <a href="https://www.latimes.com/california/story/2024-09-26/newsom-signs-formal-apology-for-california-role-in-slavery" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reported</a>. Slavery was never legal in California after it became a state in 1850, but some argue that the state&#8217;s laws allowed slave owners to keep slaves even after the practice was outlawed in California&#8217;s 1849 Constitution.
“The State of California accepts responsibility for the role we played in promoting, facilitating, and permitting the institution of slavery, as well as its enduring legacy of persistent racial disparities,” Newsom said in a statement. “Building on decades of work, California is now taking another important step forward in recognizing the grave injustices of the past — and making amends for the harms caused.”
Democrat Assemblymember Reggie Jones-Sawyer added, “Healing can only begin with an apology. The State of California acknowledges its past actions and is taking this bold step to correct them, recognizing its role in hindering the pursuit of life, liberty, and happiness for Black individuals through racially motivated punitive laws.”
The apology, however, doesn&#8217;t take any steps toward reparations as Democrats in California take heat from reparations advocates for the lack of progress on the issue, the LA Times reported. California was the first state in the nation to appoint a reparations task force.
On Wednesday, Newsom vetoed two reparations bills, one of which would have allowed black Californians to reclaim or be compensated for property that was taken by the government through eminent domain decades ago, according to the <a href="https://apnews.com/article/california-reparations-eminent-domain-30e904077112f67690b402a7899120a8" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Associated Press</a>.

Newsom said that if he had signed the bill, it would not have gone into full effect because lawmakers previously blocked another piece of legislation to create an agency tasked with reviewing reparations claims.
&#8220;I thank the author for his commitment to redressing past racial injustices. However, this bill tasks a nonexistent state agency to carry out its various provisions and requirements, making it impossible to implement,&#8221; Newsom stated.
The second reparations bill vetoed by Newsom would have expanded California&#8217;s Medicaid program to include medically supported food and nutrition. The governor argued that the bill &#8220;would result in significant and ongoing general fund costs for the Medi-Cal program that are not included in the budget.&#8221;

The leftist New York City Council passed legislation on Thursday that pushes the largest city in the U.S. closer to a program that would hand out reparations to black residents.
The passage of two bills sponsored by Councilmembers Crystal Hudson and Farah Louis means NYC taxpayers will now fund a &#8220;Truth, Healing and Reconciliation Commission&#8221; along with a reparations task force, Fox News <a href="https://www.foxnews.com/media/nyc-council-passes-slavery-reparations-legislation-yield-material-solutions-from-us-history" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reported</a>. The legislation will also require information signs to be posted at the site of New York City&#8217;s &#8220;first slave market,&#8221; according to a <a href="https://council.nyc.gov/press/2024/09/12/2692/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">press release</a> from the city council.
&#8220;The legacy of slavery and systemic racism has impacted all facets of our society today, and it’s important that our city recognizes and takes steps to redress these longstanding harms,” NYC Council Speaker Adrienne Adams said. &#8220;By creating new processes to fully examine the present-day impacts of injustices inflicted on Black New Yorkers and communities, we are advancing necessary efforts to consider potential remedies that can lead to healing and reconciliation.&#8221;
Hudson, who sponsored one of the bills, said the passage of her legislation is a major step in her &#8220;Black Agenda for New York City.&#8221; She added that &#8220;it is [her] hope that as the nation’s largest city––with the biggest municipal budget––our truth, healing, and reconciliation process will work; it will identify racist, anti-Black policies at the foundation of our city’s institutions, and it will yield material solutions to address these foundational cracks.&#8221;

Louis, whose bill focused on starting a reparations task force, said, &#8220;Throughout my tenure in the Council, we have heard countless testimonies and conducted numerous hearings revealing the ongoing impacts of historical injustices. Black women, in particular, continue to be disadvantaged in both public and private sectors, facing systemic inequities that hinder their progress and well-being. Addressing these compounded injustices is essential to forming a more just municipality and society.&#8221;
Republican City Council Minority Leader Joseph Borelli blasted the legislation, telling <a href="https://nypost.com/2024/09/11/us-news/nyc-council-expected-to-back-taskforce-to-study-reparations/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">the New York Post</a> that he would move out of the city before paying reparations.
&#8220;If they can introduce me to one New Yorker who owned a slave I’d be happy to consider it,&#8221; he said. &#8220;But until then, I am not paying a dime as a reparation for a harm I did not cause, nor condone, nor once participated in.&#8221;
Numerous cities — and the states of <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/new-york-governor-kathy-hochul-signs-bill-creating-task-force-to-consider-race-based-reparations" target="_blank" rel="noopener">New York</a> and <a href="https://apnews.com/article/california-reparations-budget-black-25a4e549c64fafde3f71f77c201b3030" target="_blank" rel="noopener">California</a> — have created reparations task forces in the wake of George Floyd&#8217;s death and the protests and riots in the summer of 2020. Many of the task forces have failed to yield any significant results, and two members of Detroit&#8217;s reparations task force <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/members-resign-from-detroits-reparations-task-force-over-lack-of-progress-no-broad-strategic-vision" target="_blank" rel="noopener">stepped down</a> last year after expressing frustration over the lack of &#8220;progress.&#8221;
Even though slavery was never legal in California, the state&#8217;s exploration into slavery reparations has seen the most success, with Gov. Gavin Newsom signing a state budget in July that included <a href="https://apnews.com/article/california-reparations-budget-black-25a4e549c64fafde3f71f77c201b3030" target="_blank" rel="noopener">$12 million</a> for reparations legislation.
Vice President Kamala Harris has also <a href="https://www.foxnews.com/politics/harris-now-mum-reparations-she-signaled-support-2020-white-house-run" target="_blank" rel="noopener">expressed her support</a> for reparations, saying in 2019, &#8220;I think there has to be some form of reparations, and we could discuss what that is, but look, we’re looking at more than 200 years of slavery. We’re looking at almost 100 years of Jim Crow.&#8221;
She also said as a candidate in 2019 that if elected president, she would sign a bill that would provide reparations to the descendants of African slaves. The Harris campaign has not said if the Democratic nominee still supports that position.

Senator Raphael Warnock (D-GA) compared former President Donald Trump&#8217;s supporters — particularly evangelical Christians — to segregationists and slavery advocates during a recent interview, suggesting that they must be answering to a different God.
Warnock joined host David Remnick for a lengthy conversation that aired over the weekend on &#8220;<a href="https://www.newyorker.com/podcast/the-new-yorker-radio-hour/senator-raphael-warnock-on-americas-moral-and-spiritual-battle" target="_blank" rel="noopener">The New Yorker Radio Hour</a>,&#8221; and Warnock insisted that the political fight against Trump was also a &#8220;moral and spiritual&#8221; battle.
It was Remnick who raised the question about pro-Trump evangelicals and what he called a &#8220;movement&#8221; among them to call for becoming a &#8220;Christian Nation with laws instituting Christian principles.&#8221;
&#8220;The enormous number of people of earnest faith, who look at someone who lives the way he does, who’s now been convicted of multiple felonies, how do you analyze that?&#8221; Remnick asked.
Warnock responded by suggesting that evangelical Trump supporters were no different from the Christians who had at one time supported either slavery or segregation.

And, there are a whole lot of Christians who were pro-segregation,&#8221; Warnock explained, adding, &#8220;There’s a recurring line by Martin Luther King Jr in his letter from the Birmingham jail. He says it a few times, and in his speeches — he says, &#8216;I am so disappointed in the American church. What kind of people worship there? Who really is their God?&#8217; That’s the question for this moment. &#8216;Who really is their God?&#8217; Particularly when we’ve been told by a lot of folks on the far right for years that their focus is family values.&#8221;
Warnock went on to attack evangelicals for their position on &#8220;matters of private morality,&#8221; such as sex and gender issues.
&#8220;And those same people now are lined up behind Donald Trump,&#8221; Warnock kept hammering the point. &#8220;A man who has, had several marriages who found himself caught up in the crosshairs of, his decision to having an affair with a porn star, and these same folks who raised these issues around family values and private morality are the ones who are speaking as if he is the Messiah of God. I think the question that Doctor King asked all those years ago is especially relevant at this moment: &#8216;Who really is their God?'&#8221;

A Democratic lawmaker proposed exempting black people from paying taxes as a form of reparations last week.
Rep. Jasmine Crockett of Texas said on an episode of “The Black Lawyers Podcast” that a celebrity – she could not remember who – inspired her to look at exempting black people from paying taxes, according to the <a href="https://nypost.com/2024/04/10/us-news/democrat-congresswoman-suggests-black-people-be-exempt-from-paying-taxes/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">New York Post</a>.
“I don’t know that that’s … necessarily a bad idea,” Crockett remembered thinking when she heard the proposal. “One of the things they propose is black folk not have to pay taxes for a certain amount of time because … that puts money back in your pocket.”
Crockett said that a tax exemption may be a more palatable reparations solution to get behind rather than “actually giving out dollars.” The shortfall is that the proposal would only help those black people who are currently paying taxes.
“If you do the no tax thing, for people that are already, say, struggling and not paying taxes in the first place — ” Crockett said.
Progressive Democrats have backed reparations as a way to pay black Americans for the United States’ history of slavery for years, though the proposal has failed to gain popular support. Even in deep blue California, nearly 60% of voters <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/nearly-60-of-california-voters-oppose-cash-reparations-for-slavery-poll">said</a> they opposed such a policy. Just 28% of California voters support it, according to a September poll by the University of California Berkeley Institute of Governmental Studies.
Elected Democrats have continued to push the policy, however. In New York, Governor Kathy Hochul in December <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/new-york-governor-kathy-hochul-signs-bill-creating-task-force-to-consider-race-based-reparations">signed</a> legislation creating a commission to study the issue. The bill set forth a nine-member committee tasked with examining “the institution of slavery” and making “determinations regarding compensation.”
In January, Rep. Cori Bush (D-MO) called for reparations in a post on X. Bush said that the United States “owes” the descendants of slaves.

“Our country owes – OWES – a debt to the descendants of enslaved Black people, not just for slavery, but for what followed, like Black Codes, red lining, Jim Crow, and mass incarceration,” she <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/cori-bush-demands-reparations-gets-a-virtual-earful-instead">said</a>. “That’s why I introduced my Reparations NOW resolution. This country has an obligation.”
Aside from its unpopularity with Americans, reparations have faced other hurdles, such as questions over legality and who would qualify for the special treatment. Critics have said that such a policy would be racist against Americans who had nothing to do with the historic racism against black people.

“Anti-racist” activist Ibram X. Kendi on Friday declined Daily Wire host Matt Walsh&#8217;s offer to debate the topic of world slavery following a viral exchange the pair had over its history.
Kendi last week accused Walsh of engaging in &#8220;White savior&#8221; rhetoric after Walsh noted that white people did not invent slavery &#8220;but were the first to abolish it.&#8221; The racial activist&#8217;s vague reasoning for declining the debate offer relied on &#8220;many historians&#8221; supposedly proving Walsh&#8217;s claims wrong, though little other information was given.

Days later, Kendi told Walsh he would not debate him because it &#8220;would be a huge waste of my time&#8221; and accused Walsh of &#8220;producing propaganda about the superior greatness of White people for White consumption.&#8221;
&#8220;Many historians have already explained why your statements about slavery are wrong,&#8221; Kendi wrote. &#8220;It would be a huge waste of my time repeating what has already been shared with you. What is factually right and factually wrong doesn’t seem to matter to you. You seem intent on producing propaganda about the superior greatness of White people for White consumption.&#8221;
The Critical Race Theory (CRT) guru then suggested Walsh was wrong because of his supposed implied emphasis, not necessarily the facts Walsh stated.
&#8220;Your propaganda, this time, can be boiled down to three ideas: (1) White enslavers are hardly responsible for slavery in the Americas—but White people *are* responsible for the global abolition of slavery. (2) White enslavers are hardly responsible for enslaving Black people, but they are responsible for saving Black people from slavery. (3) The world and the historian should be praising White people for abolishing slavery and saving Black people,&#8221; Kendi posted. &#8220;The ultimate White savior statement.&#8221;

Kendi, who gained prominence after George Floyd died in 2020, developed a career pushing Critical Race Theory through books and speaking engagements. In 2021, the MacArthur Foundation announced that Kendi would receive a $625,000 five-year grant for research. Kendi, who says that America is systemically racist, often charges steep fees for speaking engagements.

In 2020, Kendi also started an education center at Boston University that focused on “anti-racist research.” Last year, however, Kendi’s Center for Antiracist Research <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/ibram-x-kendis-academic-center-focusing-on-antiracism-to-fire-staffers" target="_blank" rel="noopener">fired</a> around 20 staffers, and the university <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/boston-university-announces-inquiry-into-ibram-x-kendis-antiracist-center" target="_blank" rel="noopener">announced</a> that it would launch an inquiry into the center after complaints about its culture.
Since publishing “How to Be an Antiracist,” Kendi has drawn criticism for promoting the theory that all racial disparities are due to racism. He has also faced criticism for his book “Antiracist Baby,” a children’s picture book that introduces children to the concept of anti-racism.

Sunny Hostin of ABC’s “The View,” who recently discovered that her ancestors were slave owners, insisted that she still deserves slave reparations.
Hostin was <a href="https://www.pbs.org/weta/finding-your-roots/watch/episodes/far-and-away" target="_blank" rel="noopener">interviewed</a> on PBS’s “Finding Your Roots” by host Henry Louis Gates Jr.
He informed her that her great-great-great grandfather, born in 1824, was the son of a merchant who was likely involved in the slave trade. Her great-great-great grandfather owned at least one human being, Gates Jr. stated. That side of the family came from Spain.
&#8220;Wow. I’m a little bit in shock; I just always thought of myself as Puerto Rican,&#8221; Hostin, whose husband comes from Spain, responded. &#8220;You know, half Puerto Rican. I didn’t think I was a – my family was originally from Spain and slaveholders.&#8221;
“So how are you feeling, my friend?” Gates Jr. asked.
“I think it’s actually pretty interesting that my husband and I have shared roots, so I do appreciate that,” she answered. “And I think it’s great for our children to know this information. I guess it’s a fact of life that this is how some people made their living, on the backs of others.”

So, y&#8217;all can stop texting me and emailing me and saying that I&#8217;m a white girl and I don&#8217;t deserve reparations! &#8230; I still believe in reparations. I still believe this country has a lot to do in terms of racial justice.”
Hostin spoke of her mother, saying, “Her race is white, She’s European,” adding of her mother’s reaction to the news of her ancestry: “She was deeply disappointed. She actually cried about it. And then she said maybe that&#8217;s why I have been so connected to black culture because it&#8217;s an atonement in my spirit. And I received that. I also found out – and there were slaves on both sides of our family, mother’s and father’s. But we are seven percent indigenous Puerto Rican!”
In October 2022, Hostin <a href="https://www.foxnews.com/media/the-view-host-sunny-hostin-fumes-being-called-racist-social-media" target="_blank" rel="noopener">stated</a>, “People need to start just looking up what the definition of racism is. It’s really a power dynamic. It’s not just about the color of your skin, and I think when you talk about those who committed crimes that owe reparations, those are the people who committed the atrocities of slavery, who stole land, who killed indigenous people.”

Daily Wire host Matt Walsh challenged “anti-racist” activist Ibram X. Kendi to a debate after the leftist author said Walsh’s take on slavery was “the ultimate White savior statement.”
Kendi was irked by Walsh’s response on Tuesday to a post on X that claimed, &#8220;Slavery is white history. How we survived it is black history.&#8221;
“Slavery is world history,” Walsh wrote. “White people did not invent it, and were not the first to practice it, but were the first to abolish it. The last place in the world to still have legal slavery was Africa. It wasn&#8217;t fully legally abolished on the continent until 1981.”

Walsh was applauded by numerous people for his take, including X owner Elon Musk, who simply replied, “True.” Walsh’s post, which was viewed more than six million times, triggered a huge response, including from Kendi, who <a href="https://twitter.com/ibramxk/status/1755249100532891764" target="_blank" rel="noopener">quote-tweeted</a> Walsh’s statement and described it as “The ultimate White savior statement.”
While Kendi’s post was slammed by numerous social media users — including the popular X accounts of The Babylon Bee’s Joel Berry and End Wokeness — Walsh replied to the Critical Race Theory apologist’s comment with an offer.

The author of “How To Be an Antiracist” has yet to respond publicly to Walsh’s offer for an on-camera debate. Kendi, who gained prominence after George Floyd died in 2020, developed a career pushing Critical Race Theory through books and speaking engagements. In 2021, the MacArthur Foundation announced that Kendi would receive a $625,000 five-year grant for research. Kendi, who says that America is systemically racist, often charges steep fees for speaking engagements.
In 2020, Kendi also started an education center at Boston University that focused on “anti-racist research.” Last year, however, Kendi’s Center for Antiracist Research <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/ibram-x-kendis-academic-center-focusing-on-antiracism-to-fire-staffers" target="_blank" rel="noopener">fired</a> around 20 staffers, and the university <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/boston-university-announces-inquiry-into-ibram-x-kendis-antiracist-center" target="_blank" rel="noopener">announced</a> that it would launch an inquiry into the center after complaints about its culture.

Bush took to X to outline her grievances and announce that she had put forth a resolution designed to address them.

Republican presidential candidate Nikki Haley faced backlash Wednesday night after she answered a voter’s question on the cause of the Civil War without mentioning slavery. 
Haley, the former South Carolina governor, was speaking at a town hall event in New Hampshire Wednesday night when a voter asked her, “What was the cause of the United States Civil War?”
“Well, don’t come with an easy question, right?” Haley said. “I think the cause of the Civil War was basically how government was going to run. The freedoms and what people could and couldn’t do.”
Haley then asked the voter what he thought was behind the deadliest war in American history, to which he responded, “I’m not running for president.” 
Haley then added, “I think it always comes down to the role of government and what the rights of the people are. And I will always stand by the fact that I think government was intended to secure the rights and freedoms of the people. &#8230; We need to have capitalism. We need to have economic freedom. We need to make sure that we do all things so that individuals have the liberties so that they can have freedom of speech, freedom of religion, freedom to do or be anything they want to be without government getting in the way.”
The voter wasn’t impressed with Haley’s answer, however, and slammed her for not mentioning slavery in her response.

Haley, the former U.S. ambassador to the U.N., was immediately criticized by both the Left and the Right for her remarks. President Joe Biden <a href="https://twitter.com/JoeBiden/status/1740221284284256645">posted</a> the clip on X Wednesday night, commenting, “It was about slavery.” The campaign for Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, who is neck-and-neck with Haley in the polls, also responded to Haley’s comments.
“Yikes,” the DeSantis campaign <a href="https://twitter.com/DeSantisWarRoom/status/1740228642834370755">wrote</a>. “Local New Hampshire stations are already covering Nikki Haley’s disastrous town hall tonight where she declined to mention ‘slavery’ when asked ‘What was the cause of the Civil War?’”
On Thursday morning, Haley was on local New Hampshire radio shows to comment on the town hall Q&amp;A and the answer she gave on the Civil War.
“Yes, we know the Civil War was about slavery,&#8221; Haley said. &#8220;But more than that, what’s the lesson in all this? That freedom matters. And individual rights and liberties matter for all people. That’s the blessing of America. That was a stain on America when we had slavery. But what we want is never [to] relive it. Never let anyone take those freedoms away again.”
Haley also <a href="https://twitter.com/NewHampJournal/status/1740375525754052846" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a> the person who asked her the question at the town hall was a &#8220;Democrat plant,&#8221; adding that she is facing heat because Democrats want to run against Trump.
&#8220;Why are they hitting me? See this for what it is&#8230; They want to run against Trump. In town halls, I answer every question, and they are planting questions there,&#8221; <a href="https://twitter.com/NewHampJournal/status/1740375039382532451" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a> Haley, according to the New Hampshire Journal.
Haley has faced criticism in the past for her comments and actions related to the Civil War and the Confederate flag. In 2015, the then-governor of South Carolina signed a bill removing the Confederate flag from being displayed in front of the statehouse after nine black Americans were killed in a church by a white shooter who espoused racist ideology. Then, in an interview with conservative radio host Glenn Beck four years later, Haley <a href="https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/politics/elections/2023/12/28/nikki-haley-slavery-civil-war/72046352007/">said</a> the Confederate flag represented “service, sacrifice and heritage” to South Carolinians, but the church shooter “hijacked” it.  
The backlash to Haley’s comments at the New Hampshire town hall comes less than a month before the state’s voters will go to the polls in the first-in-the-nation primary. Haley — who is enjoying a <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/latest-presidential-polls-trump-posts-his-largest-lead-in-gop-primary-consistently-tops-biden-in-general-election" target="_blank" rel="noopener">recent rise</a> in primary polls — currently sits in second place in New Hampshire, trailing former President Donald Trump by around 22 points, according to the <a href="https://www.realclearpolling.com/polls/president/republican-primary/2024/new-hampshire">Real Clear Politics</a> average.

Nikki Haley Blasted For Leaving Out Slavery In Her Answer On Cause Of The Civil War

The teaching of U.S. history in public high schools has received much attention in recent years. But what about the teaching of U.S. history at our colleges and universities? 
A <a href="https://cai.asu.edu/americanhistory" target="_blank" rel="noopener">newly released commission report</a> from the Center for American Institutions at Arizona State University presents a bleak picture. The imbalanced design of many introductory U.S. history courses guides impressionable students toward the conclusion that America is a failed experiment, leaving many college students with a starkly negative, narrow, and incomplete view of our country’s character and past.
Introductory courses in U.S. history – typically taught in two sections, the first half to 1877, and the second half since 1877 – play an outsized role in our university systems and have downstream effects on K-12 education. Many institutions require that non-history majors, as well as future K-12 teachers, enroll in the U.S. survey to fulfill General Education requirements. The requirement is perfectly understandable. To become informed citizens in our constitutional, democratic republic, graduates ought to have a well-rounded, basic knowledge of the history of our country. For some students, especially foreign nationals, the U.S. survey will be their first and last exposure to a comprehensive history of the United States.
These facts make the <a href="https://cai.asu.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Center for American Institutions</a> commission all the more concerning. The commission on the Teaching of American History included former Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker, former Oklahoma Governor Mary Fallin, and former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich. Academic researchers for the commission examined syllabi for introductory U.S. history courses at the nation’s top-ranked colleges and universities. The research revealed that foundational topics and themes in U.S. history are frequently absent. Many of the courses were taught through a <a href="https://www.historians.org/research-and-publications/perspectives-on-history/september-2022/is-history-history-identity-politics-and-teleologies-of-the-present" target="_blank" rel="noopener">presentist perspective</a>, examining and interpreting history through the lens of contemporary politics, issues, and concerns. Absent from many of these courses were complexity, nuance, debate, and global context. Instead, many of the courses elevated an overly simplistic assessment of the past, devoid of much of the richness and complexity that characterized each historical period. It would be wrong and misguided if this were pursued in order to paint a false and extravagantly rosy picture of United States history. But in this case, it paints a false and extravagantly negative picture of United States history.
The first half of the U.S. survey, to 1877, covers the colonial period through the Civil War and Reconstruction. One syllabus for the first half of the survey announced that upon completion of the course, students will “grasp how inequality was woven into the nation’s very constitutions.” Another announced that upon completion of the course, students will “see how race and racism is snarled in every part of U.S. history.” Another course at a prestigious state university devoted the first three weeks of the U.S. survey to “ecological imperialism” and “cultural imperialism.” 
“We will spend considerable time learning about major themes that trouble the present-day,” an instructor at the university announced in the syllabus, “including the expropriation of Native American lands; the entwined histories of race, slavery, and freedom; the creation and recreation of gendered economic, political, social relations; and the rise of capitalism.”
The second half of the survey, U.S. history since 1877, is by far the more ideological and biased of the two. Many of the syllabi examined for this study were nakedly political. Most syllabi intensively focused on identity topics of race, gender, sexuality, queer theory, and militant social protest. The predominant takeaway for students in many of these classes was American history as a history of exclusion, chiefly organized around identity.
Neglected topics included basic political history, including various presidential administrations, pivotal elections, and party development. Legal history was generally excluded, as was military history and diplomatic history. Conservatism, of course, was almost universally framed in a negative context. Primary readings from conservative thinkers were rarely assigned.
Absent, also, was any indication that the United States had made real and significant progress on civil rights and race relations in the 20th century. Moreover, there was rarely any indication that the average standard of living, for all people, increased substantially across the twentieth century (better housing, health, education, and technology); instead, students were often fed an anti-market, anti-consumerist narrative about the corrupting effects of capitalism. Social, economic, and technological advancements received virtually no mention; instead, post-World War II America was often portrayed as a period – not of prosperity and expanding freedom – but of greed, decline, sexism, homophobia, and racism.
Many courses ended the semester on a sour note: the “Decline of America” and the “End of the American Empire” were common themes in course syllabi. Students exiting such a course would naturally conclude that the American experiment had failed, that it was never successful, and that drastic, revolutionary activism in the present time might therefore be warranted. Appropriately, the supplemental readings in many of these courses often championed political and social justice activism.
One syllabus, for example, announced that students will learn about the “diversity of American experiences with specific emphasis on race, ethnicity, class, gender, and sexual orientation.” The final weeks of the course included the following topics: “Women’s Lib and Second Wave Feminism,” “Native Americans and Red Power,” “Gay Liberation and LGBTQ Activism,” “Chicano Activism and Latino Movements,” “Environmentalism and Green Movements,” “The Triumph of the Right,” and “From Witch-hunts and Communist-hunts to Terrorist-hunts.” 
Another syllabus at a separate university devoted an entire week to, “Final Frontiers: The Cultural War, LGBTQ Rights, and the Fight against Ablelism.”
Besides sacrificing truth for fiction, the extraordinary bias of our introductory U.S. history courses contributes to the erosion of our civic culture. It undermines the noble effort to create a common, shared vision for America’s future. It distorts our shared past, exacerbates divisions within our society, and discourages a fuller understanding of the entirety of U.S. history.
So what do we do? The report includes several noteworthy suggestions.
First, state legislatures should require educational transparency. Academic units at all public universities should be required to make syllabi publicly available and accessible so that we know what our tax dollars are being used to teach. Most syllabi, at most universities, are not available to the public.
But also we desperately need intellectual diversity. One <a href="https://econjwatch.org/File+download/944/LangbertQuainKleinSept2016.pdf?mimetype=pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">recent study</a> of the nation’s top 40 colleges and universities, for example, found that among History faculty, there are 33.5 Democrats for every single Republican. That is obviously unacceptable and flagrantly unrepresentative of the public and student body. Upper administrations and deans should insist on faculty searches that are not so narrowly tailored that they rule out candidates who are not ideologically aligned with the orthodox political persuasion. Certainly, at a minimum, DEI statements should be immediately abolished as ideological litmus tests.
Finally, a multi-disciplinary approach – including interdisciplinary degree programs with more expansive curricula – could encourage dialogue across the disciplines and potentially foster greater intellectual diversity among the faculty.
The United States of America is a great experiment in freedom, constitutional government, and well-ordered liberty. But the experiment is fragile. To preserve and maintain it – to secure the blessings of liberty to ourselves and our posterity – we must have robust, vibrant American institutions, including institutions of higher education. Let’s reform the teaching of U.S. history at our colleges and universities.

Bush&#8217;s speech, delivered in a series of breathless bursts, began as a defense of Tlaib and quickly went sideways as she turned and condemned the very body she was addressing, claiming that Congress had &#8220;enslaved black people&#8221; and continued to yell even after her time expired and her mic was cut off.
Leading off with the race card, Bush claimed that Tlaib was only under fire because no one cared about or had empathy for people who &#8220;look like&#8221; her. &#8220;It&#8217;s outrageous that my colleagues are blatantly — blatantly — attempting to silence the only Palestinian American representative right here. It&#8217;s outrageous, but it&#8217;s not surprising.&#8221;
&#8220;Let me tell you, it&#8217;s not surprising because this place &#8230; is where 1,700 members &#8230; this elected body &#8230; enslaved black people,&#8221; she continued, and she began gasping for air to punctuate each point. &#8220;It&#8217;s not surprising, because they thought it was right.&#8221;
&#8220;It&#8217;s not surprising because this is the place &#8230; where members continue to claim that the insurrection &#8230; on the Capitol &#8230; just looked appeared to look &#8230; like a normal tourist visit, it&#8217;s not surprising &#8230; because this is the place &#8230; where our black and brown staff members repeatedly speak &#8230; of experiencing racism and sexism &#8230; islamophobia, get pushed off of elevators &#8230; xenophobia and more right here in this workplace,&#8221; she shouted. &#8220;This is the place.&#8221;
Bush tried to pivot back to Tlaib, claiming then that she &#8220;mourns&#8221; for the 1,400 people in Israel — most of them civilians and many women and children — who were slaughtered by Hamas terrorists on October 7th. But by the time she brought the topic back around to Tlaib, her time had expired. Still, she continued to shout after being told several times that she was no longer recognized and did not stop even when her mic was cut off.
A number of critics responded to Bush&#8217;s comments, referring to her defense of Tlaib as an &#8220;unhinged rant&#8221; and pointing out the obvious historical flaw in her claim: namely that Congress has never had 1700 members and voted in 1865 to abolish slavery.

Kenny Webster made the point, though he was slightly off on the date — that it was then President Abraham Lincoln whose Emancipation Proclamation freed the slaves in 1863 and the vote to abolish the practice entirely came two years later: &#8220;Cori Bush: &#8216;this place is where 1700 members of Congress enslaved black people.&#8217; Nope &#8230; There were never 1700 members of Congress but in 1863, 230 members of Congress freed the slaves. Is she high on drugs?&#8221;
