<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">At least ten backcountry skiers were missing late Tuesday after an avalanche swept through northern California near the town of Truckee at Castle Peak, as powerful winter storms slammed the Sierra Nevada and created what officials described as extremely dangerous conditions for search and rescue crews.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The </span><a href="https://www.sierrasun.com/news/avalanche-reported-near-castle-peak-skiers-missing/"><span style="font-weight: 400;">avalanche</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> was reported at approximately 11:30 a.m. local time and affected a group of 16 people, four mountain guides and 12 clients, </span><a href="https://www.facebook.com/nevadacountysheriffsoffice/posts/pfbid0gMfVyuYhLJYjtZWfeNSAJS4ovvJ8YUzjhRZ1ApfYdnM8UDvAmULLrX3FhosrF9WWl"><span style="font-weight: 400;">according</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> to the Nevada County Sheriff’s Office. Officials said at least six skiers survived the slide and were still at the site as of late Tuesday afternoon, awaiting rescue because weather conditions made immediate evacuation unsafe.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Search and rescue ski teams from Boreal Mountain Ski Resort and Alder Creek Adventure Center were deployed to assist, the sheriff’s office said. Authorities emphasized that rescue efforts were being carried out cautiously due to ongoing avalanche danger, heavy snowfall, and near-zero visibility.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Castle Peak, a popular backcountry skiing destination along Interstate 80 near Lake Tahoe, received intense snowfall as a conveyor belt of winter storms moved through northern California. Boreal Mountain Ski Resort reported roughly 30 inches of snow in the previous 24 hours, while </span><a href="https://forecast.weather.gov/MapClick.php?lat=39.30139096195015&amp;lon=-120.76822798818726"><span style="font-weight: 400;">forecasts say</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> additional heavy snowfall is expected through Thursday.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Avalanche danger across the region was rated high on Tuesday. In a bulletin</span> <a href="https://www.sierraavalanchecenter.org/forecasts/avalanche/central-sierra-nevada#/central-sierra-nevada/"><span style="font-weight: 400;">issued</span></a> <span style="font-weight: 400;">before the reported avalanche, the Sierra Avalanche Center warned against travel in or near avalanche terrain, citing the likelihood of a widespread natural avalanche cycle.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">“Large avalanches may run through treed areas,” the center said, urging anyone attempting travel in non-avalanche terrain to ensure no steep slopes were connected above or adjacent to their route.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The avalanche occurred as the Sierra Nevada experienced what scientists described as some of the worst winter conditions in years. </span><a href="https://cssl.berkeley.edu/"><span style="font-weight: 400;">According</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> to researchers at the Central Sierra Snow Lab at the University of California, Berkeley, snowfall totals had already exceeded 28 inches in parts of the central Sierra by Tuesday morning, with another two to three feet expected by Wednesday night.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">High winds compounded the danger, with gusts exceeding 100 miles per hour along ridge tops and up to 45 miles per hour in mountain valleys, forecasters said. Combined with heavy snowfall, the conditions created near-whiteout conditions across much of the region.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Transportation was also heavily impacted. Portions of major highways were closed, and ski resorts across the Sierra shuttered operations, citing unsafe travel conditions. The California Highway Patrol warned motorists that visibility along mountain roads had dropped to near zero in some areas. “</span><span style="font-weight: 400;">This isn’t inconvenient weather. This is unsafe travel</span><span style="font-weight: 400;">,” they </span><a href="https://x.com/CHP_Truckee/status/2023851554894430386"><span style="font-weight: 400;">said</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> in a statement on X, warning that large avalanches were expected across backcountry terrain into at least Wednesday morning.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Winter storm warnings remained in effect from southwest Oregon through much of Northern and Central California, with forecasters cautioning that travel could be dangerous to near impossible through late Thursday.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Officials said search operations would continue as conditions allow and urged the public to avoid backcountry travel until the storm system passes and avalanche risk subsides.</span></p>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Elis Lundholm, a woman who identifies as a transgender man, will compete for Sweden at the Milan-Cortina Olympics as part of the ski team. But here’s the interesting part: Lundholm will take part in the women’s category, not the men’s. </span></p>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The skier began identifying as a transgender man five years ago and </span><a href="https://www.aftonbladet.se/senastenytt/ttsport/sport/a/j0BoeL/identifierar-sig-som-man-moter-kvinnor-i-os"><span style="font-weight: 400;">told</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> the Swedish outlet Sportbladet that she “has never had a problem competing as a woman.” </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Social media users pointed out the implications of Lundholm remaining in the women&#8217;s category, which is based on biological sex under current rules.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">“Lundholm is female, identifies as trans, uses he/him pronouns and has not gone through medical transition, competes in the female category,” British professor Jon Pike </span><a href="https://x.com/runthinkwrite/status/2018270959677968618"><span style="font-weight: 400;">posted</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> on X.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">“Lundholm is a walking/skiing refutation of the claim that it’s unreasonable to require TiM [Transgender identifying Male] athletes to compete in their sex category,” he said. “It’s said that this is the equivalent of ‘banning them from sport.’ Lundholm competes in the correct sex category, even though this is not the category into which Lundholm identifies, and has ‘no problem with this.’”</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Most social media commenters didn’t have an issue with Lundholm competing with other women, noting how the only thing that could make competition unfair is if she had been using testosterone.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Last summer, the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Committee changed its policy to comply with President Donald Trump’s executive order banning men from competing against women, as The Daily Wire previously </span><a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/u-s-olympic-committee-bans-men-in-womens-sports"><span style="font-weight: 400;">reported</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">. The committee posted an update stating that it would “&#8230;ensure that women have a fair and safe competition environment,” consistent with the executive order.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">This change followed years of controversy in the world of sports. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">In the 2024 Summer Games, Imane Khelif of Algeria, a boxer who had failed gender tests, dominated the women’s welterweight division and won the gold medal. Khelif’s success in Paris drew outrage across the globe. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">In 2021, trans-identifying man Laurel Hubbard of New Zealand competed against women in weightlifting in the Tokyo Games. Chelsea Wolfe, a man who identifies as a woman, was also at the Tokyo Olympics as a reserve cyclist for the U.S. women’s BMX Freestyle team.</span></p>

<p>American downhill skier Lindsey Vonn was airlifted from the slopes in Cortina D&#8217;Ampezzo, Italy, after a devastating crash just a few seconds into her downhill run on Sunday.</p>
<p>Vonn, a three-time Olympic medalist in the sport, had opted to compete despite rupturing her the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in her left knee a week prior to the start of the Winter Olympic Games, and had successfully completed a training run on the course one day prior — but just after the start of her race on Sunday, she hooked her right arm into a gate on the course. She attempted to compensate, but catching her arm had thrown off her balance enough that she was <a href="https://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/olympics/2026/02/08/womens-downhill-results-highlights-lindsey-vonn/88568928007/">unable to recover</a>.</p>
<p><a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5Z08Foql49w">She fell</a> first to one side, and then face first into the snow. She could be heard screaming from the course as medics rush to where she lay face down, and she remained on the course with first responders at her side for about 13 minutes until a helicopter arrived to transport her out.</p>

<p>&#8220;That definitely was the last thing we wanted to see and it happened quick and when that happens, you&#8217;re just immediately hoping she&#8217;s okay. And it was scary because when you start to see the stretchers being put out, it&#8217;s not a good sign,&#8221; Vonn&#8217;s sister <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4poD06FlaAg">Karin Kildow</a> told NBC News just after the crash. &#8220;But she really &#8230; she just dared greatly and she put it all out there. So it&#8217;s really hard to see, but we just really hope she&#8217;s okay. She does have all of her surgeons and her PT staff here and her doctors, so I&#8217;m sure they&#8217;ll give us a report and we&#8217;ll meet her at whatever hospital she&#8217;s at.&#8221;</p>
<p>The U.S. Ski and Snowboard Team issued a brief statement via X, saying, &#8220;Lindsey Vonn fell in the Olympic downhill and will be evaluated by medical staff.&#8221;</p>
<p class="feedBody">&#8220;We don&#8217;t know anything really yet,&#8221; Team USA’s Head Speed Coach Paul Kristofic <a href="https://www.nbcnews.com/sports/olympics/live-blog/2026-winter-olympics-live-updates-lindsey-vonn-compete-downhill-injury-rcna256599"> told reporters</a>. &#8220;She&#8217;s with a medical team in the hospital. She&#8217;s getting evaluated right now in Cortina. And then, obviously, depending on the severeness of the injury, they&#8217;re going to make decisions where to put her.&#8221;</p>
<p>Vonn&#8217;s teammate Bella Wright commented on the devastating turn of events, saying, &#8220;Things just happen so quick in this sport. It looked like Lindsey had incredible speed out of that turn, and she hooked her arm and it&#8217;s just over just like that.&#8221;</p>
<p>Teammate Breezy Johnson ultimately took gold in the downhill event, but her thoughts were with Vonn even as she went to receive her own medal.</p>
<p>&#8220;I can&#8217;t imagine the pain that she&#8217;s going through. And it&#8217;s not the physical pain. We can deal with physical pain, but the emotional pain is something else. I wish her the best and I hope that this isn&#8217;t the end,&#8221; Johnson said, likely reflecting on her own experience missing the Beijing Olympics herself after crashing in Cortina, Italy. &#8220;I hope for the best for her. My heart aches for her. It&#8217;s such a brutal sport sometimes.&#8221;</p>
<p>During a news conference, Johnson said she&#8217;d been told that Vonn was <a href="https://people.com/lindsey-vonn-cheered-breezy-johnson-from-helicopter-after-crash-winter-olympics-2026-11902256">cheering her on</a> even as the helicopter lifted her away.</p>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">There’s a potential scandal in the world of Olympic ski jumping as some athletes are being accused of injecting their penises with hyaluronic acid to achieve greater distances in competition.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">“Penisgate” was first reported by the German newspaper Bild and is now being investigated by the World Anti-Doping Agency. </span>The idea behind this method is to increase the surface area of the crotch on competitors, requiring athletes to be given a larger, looser suit, which leads to a reduced descent rate due to a larger surface area, as <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/sport/2026/feb/05/penis-injection-doping-claims-in-winter-olympics-ski-jumping-investigated-by-wada" target="_blank" rel="noopener">The Guardian</a> previously reported.</p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">World Anti-Doping Agency Director General Olivier Niggli said he was unaware of this method before the accusations went viral. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">“I’m not aware of the details of ski jumping — and how this can improve [performance] — but if anything was to come to the surface we would look at anything if it is actually doping related,” Niggli said.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">“We don’t do other means of enhancing performance but our list committee would certainly look into whether this would fall into this category. But I hadn’t heard about that until you mentioned.”</span></p>
<p>The International Ski and Snowboard Federation (FIS), which oversees ski jumping at the Winter Olympics, initially <a href="https://www.fis-ski.com/inside-fis/news/2025-26/ski-jumping-charges-brought-against-norwegian-officials-and-athletes">investigated</a> &#8220;allegations of illegal equipment manipulation&#8221; by the Norwegian ski jumping team in 2025.</p>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Two Olympic medalists from Norway, Marius Lindvik and Johann André Forfang, faced three-month suspensions after it was discovered that their ski suits were altered in the crotch area at the 2025 World Ski Championships to achieve a similar effect.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Both competitors denied knowledge of the altered suits and will compete in the Olympics. One of Norway’s head coaches and two other staffers were also suspended in connection with the scandal, which was dubbed “Crotchgate.”</span></p>
<p>A recent study <a href="https://www.frontiersin.org/journals/sports-and-active-living/articles/10.3389/fspor.2025.1693699/full">found</a> that every 2 centimeters in suit size circumference reduced drag by 4% and increased lift by 5%, resulting in an extra 5.8 meters in jump length.</p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">There are now more stringent inspections being done on ski jumping suits ahead of the competition. Per </span><a href="https://apnews.com/article/ski-jumping-suit-scandal-norway-crotch-a15ae26420ff0261b72fd8fdf57ac6ec"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Associated Press</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">, two FIS controllers and a doctor will use improved 3-D measurements to evaluate the athletes wearing their uniforms. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The suits must pass this checkpoint before they are given tamper-proof microchips, which would make alterations impossible. These chips will be scanned and remain in place at all times, the outlet noted.</span></p>

<p style="font-weight: 400;">A viral video has emerged of a teenager falling from a ski lift in Mammoth, California, where the rescue attempt seemingly went awry.</p>
<p style="font-weight: 400;">On the morning of January 27, the 16-year-old female snowboard reportedly climbed aboard the ski lift with three other riders, but was not seated properly atop the chair and slipped forward. She was hanging down from the ski lift approximately 30 feet above the ground for several minutes, suspended there as the other riders on the ski lift unsuccessfully attempted to pull her back up at Mammoth Mountain Ski Resort. The rescue attempt involved ski lift employees who placed a net to catch the girl when she fell, but the net was apparently not strong enough to break her fall.</p>
<p style="font-weight: 400;">Mammoth released a <a href="https://www.powder.com/trending-news/mammoth-snowboarder-fall-chairlift" target="_blank" rel="noopener">statement</a>:</p>

Five Mammoth Mountain employees and eight guests immediately responded and positioned the deceleration net under the guest. Our thoughts are with the guest and her family.</em></p>

Teen Falls From Ski Lift In Viral Video

<p>Oscar-winning actress Gwyneth Paltrow is facing a lawsuit by a retired optometrist who claims she collided with him on a ski slope in 2016, causing permanent brain damage.</p>
<p>Paltrow’s attorneys were trying to open a link to documents containing messages between Terry Sanderson, the optometrist, and others involved in the trial, but apparently couldn’t figure out how to access the information earlier this week. But Michael Fletcher, who was watching the trial on Court TV, was able to view the link on TV and access the information contained within in “probably like two minutes,” sending it to Paltrow’s defense team, the New York Post <a href="https://nypost.com/2023/03/28/viewer-who-accessed-group-chat-in-paltrow-case-says-opening-link-was-just-common-sense/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reported</a>.</p>
<p>“It’s comical how easy it was,” Fletcher <a href="https://www.courttv.com/title/viewer-who-uncovered-group-chat-in-gwyneth-paltrow-ski-crash-case-speaks-to-court-tv/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">told</a> Court TV when the outlet interviewed him. “They kept repeating that it’s the most important piece of evidence, and they couldn’t figure it out. They had no idea how to open the link.”</p>
<p>Paltrow’s attorneys reportedly asked Sanderson’s daughters about GoPro camera footage of the incident that occurred on February 26, 2016, on a beginner’s slope at Deer Valley Resort in Park City, Utah, a resort town known for hosting the Sundance Film Festival.</p>
<p>Fletcher was able to access the information sent to Paltrow’s attorneys, which included messages from a man named Craig Ramon, who says he was the only person who witnessed the collision between Paltrow and Sanderson.</p>
<p>Sanderson has claimed that neither he nor those close to him knew that Paltrow was the other skier involved in the accident until sometime later, but Ramon’s messages make clear that he immediately knew Paltrow was involved.</p>
<p>“You could not make this up. Gwyneth took out Terry last week,” Ramon wrote in the messages uncovered by Fletcher. “Last Saturday, her son broke his arm skiing at Park City. Gwyneth was staying at the Montage. She took her plane out of Millionaire Airport. What makes me mad is Gwyneth took out Terry and then took off.”</p>
<p>The messages also reportedly showed that Sanderson and his friends also knew early on that Paltrow was the woman on the slope.</p>

<p>Fletcher said that all he needed to do to open the link that baffled attorneys was to log in to the website where it was hosted.</p>
<p>“Like, I can’t believe they didn’t do this already. It’s almost a joke,” he told Court TV. “All I did was create a login for the website. If it’s a website that requires a login, you can’t access anything on it without a login … then the link works. It’s simple.”</p>
<p>Sanderson claims that the actress was skiing behind him on the slope and had turned to watch her children before, as his attorney said in court Tuesday, “she turns her head back down, she screams, then skis into the back of Terry Sanderson.” Sanderson’s attorney, Lawrence Buhler, said that after the collision, his client was left “facedown in the snow, unconscious,” <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/lifestyle/2023/03/21/gwyneth-paltrow-ski-trial/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">according to The Washington Post</a>. After the encounter, Paltrow allegedly fled, leaving Sanderson “stunned, lying in the snow, seriously injured,” according to his lawsuit. Paltrow didn’t call for help, he added.</p>
<p>Sanderson later went to an emergency room and was diagnosed with a concussion and four broken ribs. Sanderson’s ski companion, Craig Ramon, testified at the civil trial that he saw Paltrow crash into Sanderson and knock him over.</p>
<p>“I hear this scream and then I see this skier just slam into the back of Terry,” Ramon testified.</p>

One of her attorneys, Stephen Owens, said at the trial that because Paltrow was struck so suddenly, she at first thought she was being assaulted.</p>
<p>“She’s skiing, enjoying herself,” Owens said. “Suddenly she sees two skis appear between her skis. And a man comes up right behind her.”</p>
<p>Owens said that right after the crash, Sanderson asked, “Who ran into who?” and then apologized to Paltrow after she said that he ran into her. Paltrow’s defense team said members of her group checked on Sanderson after the accident and he said he was okay and said the same thing to a ski patrol member who came to check on them. The actress’ attorneys said Paltrow only skied away after Sanderson said he was okay and after ski patrol left and that the retired optometrist only sought help after he waved away ski patrol.</p>
<p>Owens said Ramon’s account of the incident was “a whole different, crazy story.” Owens argued that Sanderson didn’t know that Paltrow was involved at the time since she was wearing a helmet and goggles. But later, when he discovered who she was, he emailed his daughters, saying, “I’m famous.”</p>
<p>Sanderson is suing Paltrow for $300,000.</p>

And about 15 minutes later I got a call from our staff at Base Camp that her ski blade skidded off and [she] fell off the other side of the peak.”</p>

<p style="font-weight: 400;">&#8220;We all go to the mountains because there is some innate part of being human that seeks challenge and there is endless challenge to be found in our wild places. I’ve always seen mountains as a blank canvas that lets me be an artist by choosing my unique path when amongst them. It’s freedom in its purest and most simple form,&#8221; she wrote.</p>
<p style="font-weight: 400;">&#8220;But, like many things in life, what you originally set out to do isn’t always where you end up. It’s the unexpected adventures along the way that create the true magic. There’s so much more to this passion than just the climb or the ski, there are the human connections created along this journey that have been some of the deepest and most profound friendships of my life. There is also tragedy. The mountains are both majestic and fierce. They give so much and they take so much,&#8221; she added.</p>
<p style="font-weight: 400;">Nelson, who is survived by her 15 and 13-year-old sons, who were staying with her ex-husband in Colorado while she was traveling, told <a href="https://www.si.com/sports-illustrated/2020/02/06/lhotse-skiing-jim-morrison-hilaree-ne">Sports Illustrated</a> in 2020, “I tell myself a lot that the risks I take and the places I go are eventually good for my kids, and that they’re learning about their mom as an individual, too, as a person seeing that I have a passion and I’m in tune with that in living a life.”</p>
