Director Todd Phillips ditched laughter for tears with 2019’s “Joker.”
The mind behind “The Hangover” franchise, “Old School” and more got fed up with woke comedy restrictions and joined the superhero craze.
On his terms.
His “Joker” became a sensation, earned star Joaquin Phoenix a Best Actor Oscar and proved there’s more to superhero films than CGI dustups.
The media tried to turn “Joker” into an incel warning, but when the film refused to spark violence journalists moved on to other false narratives.
One thing was clear. An encore was inevitable.
“Joker: Folie à Deux” defies superhero norms. Again. No action sequences, lycra-clad heroes or tired genre tropes. Phillips even made it a musical, tasking stars Phoenix and Lady Gaga to play out their tortured romance in song.
Two-plus hours later, you’ll still wonder why they bothered.
The first “Joker” delivered a brutal study of a man in psychological agony. Arthur Fleck’s transformation into the Joker happened because society pushed him to the boundaries. The health care system failed him. His co-workers couldn’t empathize with his middling comedy career.
Bullies pounced and seized at will. And, eventually, he snapped. Or, to be more specific, he opened fire.
That arc touched on societal critiques that spiked the narrative punch. “Folie à Deux” revisits some of those themes but adds precious little to the franchise.
Arthur is being held at a mental institution (Arkham style!) following the events of the 2019 film. He faces the death penalty for killing five people, although the law doesn’t realize he also killed his Ma. His lawyer (Catherine Keener) wants to improve his public image in the hopes of avoiding the electric chair.

The guards at the institution try to pry jokes from Arthur.
All Arthur wants is to smoke every cigarette within reach. This film loves smoking in ways that would make Joe Camel blush.
Meanwhile, society has made Arthur a hero of sorts. He fought back against The System on his terms. They even made a TV movie about his transformation.
That warped fame draws the attention of a fellow patient, Harleen “Lee” Quinzel (Lady Gaga). That’s Harley Quinn, of course, one of the micro-nods to the comic book source material.
The other? Harry Lawtey’s Harvey Dent is the prosecutor hoping to end the Joker’s reign.
Lee is drawn to Arthur’s anti-social Joker and he’s just happy to have a woman look his way. Can their bond survive the trial and their self-defeating ways? What are the stakes in said trial, anyway?
Phillips cast convention aside the first time around. Now, he’s doubling down in his cinematic sandbox. The film begins with an animated short featuring the Joker and his mischievous shadow.
Huh?
The musical numbers, drawn in naturalist fashion and relying on classic tunes like “That’s Entertainment” and “If My Friends Could See Me Now,” offer modest rewards. Phoenix isn’t a singer but throws himself into the unorthodox dancing.
Lady Gaga is squarely in her element, but the film won’t embrace the full musical charms that Gene Kelly and Judy Garland embraced. “Joker: Folie à Deux” is surprisingly lifeless despite two charismatic stars and a bracing origin story.

Steve Coogan appears as a tabloid journalist eager to make Arthur summon the Joker for his audience. It’s all about ratings and The Narrative, not the truth. Is Phillips, who co-wrote the screenplay with Scott Silver, mocking corporate journalism? 
Maybe. Likely. The scene ends and the film drops that criticism cold.
Other scenes depict how society continues to keep poor Arthur down. The asylum’s security guards, including a brute played by the great Brendan Gleeson, use Arthur to further their own ends. 
And? Prison guards routinely behave badly on screen and, we’re sure, sometimes off-screen. What’s so different, or meaningful, here?
The most memorable moment brings back actor Leigh Gill, whose character witnessed one of the Joker’s killings in the first film. The haunted soul describes to the courtroom how the tragedy left him fearful of everyday life.
Gill’s performance chills. We’re reminded what the real-world implications of worshiping a serial killer are. “Joker” made us mourn a sick man’s descent into madness. We rooted for him to find some sort of comfort or healing. That never materialized.
The sequel marinates in the idea that this fallen man matters. He has a purpose, a mission beyond himself. His fame alone makes him worth our admiration.
He’s suddenly … cool. No. And there’s no oversized Bat to put him in his place.
Moral complexities could have powered “Folie à Deux.” There’s a reason we hoped Tony Soprano could stay one step ahead of The Law. Instead, we get a lethargic courtroom trial, a romance with little heat and a third act that proves the sequel never had a plan in the first place.

There’s no denying “Folie à Deux” looks magnificent. The dream sequences marry the film’s gritty aesthetic with old Hollywood panache. Phillips’ camera captures every scene for maximum impact, crafting indelible images along the way.
The film’s waning moments seem like they’re building to something mythical, a rationale for everything we’ve just witnessed. Instead, what follows erases the modest goodwill already generated.
“Joker” reinvigorated the comic book movie. “Joker: Folie à Deux” reminds us that sequels for sequels’ sake only taint the original.

An attorney for the estranged wife of the man accused of killing six women in the Gilgo Beach area of Long Island, New York, says the man is also the main suspect in a seventh murder.
Robert Macedonio, the attorney representing the suspect’s estranged wife, said the Gilgo Beach serial killer is the main suspect in a seventh murder, CBS News <a href="https://www.cbsnews.com/amp/newyork/news/rex-heuermann-family-1-year-after-arrest/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reported</a> but didn’t provide any additional information.
The Daily Wire is not naming the suspect due to a policy regarding mass killers. His wife is also not being named because she is not accused of any wrongdoing.
Macedonia made the announcement from the suspect’s driveway in Massapequa Park on the 1-year anniversary of the man’s arrest. He had previously announced that he would give an update on the family on Saturday afternoon, Fox 5 New York <a href="https://www.fox5ny.com/news/wife-accused-gilgo-beach-killer-speaks-out" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reported</a>.
Flanked by the suspect’s wife and their two children, Macedonio provided an update on the family’s situation, saying they are still “piecing their lives back together.”
&#8220;They are collateral damage to the alleged actions of [the suspect]. Whether they happened or did not happen, whether he&#8217;s innocent or guilty, their lives are forever turned upside down,&#8221; Macedonio said.
The suspect’s estranged wife didn’t answer questions, but did give an update about her current battle with cancer.
&#8220;I&#8217;m not in remission yet. I have up to three years, then the doctors will see if I&#8217;m in remission,&#8221; she said.
She had been married to the suspect for 27 years but filed for divorce just six days after he was arrested. In March, she released <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/suspected-gilgo-beach-serial-killers-wife-who-is-divorcing-him-now-says-husband-not-capable-of-murders" target="_blank" rel="noopener">a statement</a> saying her estranged husband is “not capable of the crimes he is accused of.”
“I will listen to all of the evidence and withhold judgment until the end of trial,” the wife said in a statement released through Macedonio. “I have given him the benefit of the doubt, as we all deserve.”
Macedonio reportedly said the wife visits the suspect weekly.
She also provided “heartfelt sympathies” to the victims and their families in her statement.
“Nobody deserves to die in that manner,” she added.
The suspect has pleaded not guilty to the murders of Megan Waterman, Melissa Barthelemy, and Amber Costello, who were found on a beach along the south shore of Long Island, New York, back in 2010. In January, the suspect <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/gilgo-beach-serial-killer-suspect-charged-with-4th-murder" target="_blank" rel="noopener">was charged</a> with the murder of a fourth woman, Maureen Brainard-Barnes. In June, the suspect <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/suspected-gilgo-beach-serial-killer-charged-with-2-more-murders" target="_blank" rel="noopener">was charged</a> with the 2003 death of Jessica Taylor and the 1993 death of Sandra Costilla.

Herb Baumeister has never been convicted of any murders, since he committed suicide before he could be arrested, but the number of human remains found on his property could make him one of America’s most prolific serial killers.
Baumeister was born in Indianapolis, Indiana, on April 7, 1947. Around the time he became an adolescent, he began showing antisocial behavior and was diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia and antisocial personality disorder, but was never treated for either.
In 1971, he married Julie Saiter and the couple had three children. In May 1988, they purchased a $1 million estate called Fox Hollow Farm, the same year Baumeister founded a successful thrift-store chain in Indianapolis.
Six years after purchasing the farm property, Baumeister’s 13-year-old son Erich brought home a human skull, which he said he had found in the woods on the property, according to a 1996 <a href="https://people.com/archive/while-julie-was-away-vol-46-no-26/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">article</a> from People Magazine. Baumeister told Julie that the bones were from a medical school skeleton that once belonged to his late father, a doctor, but didn’t explain what they were doing on the couple’s property. Days later, the bones were gone, and Julie simply assumed that an animal had taken them.
Julie would later learn that during the summers, when she was away with the couple’s three children, Baumeister would frequent Indianapolis gay bars – from which multiple men would disappear. It started in June 1980, when the body of a 15-year-old boy was found – the first connected to an American serial killer at the time known only as the I-70 Strangler. The boy, Michael Petree, was a male prostitute who spent time at Indianapolis gay bars – the same ones Baumeister would go to.
Ten more bodies wouldn&#8217;t be found until August 1991. Police believed that by then, Baumeister was using Fox Hollow Farm to dispose of the bodies.

In the early 1990s, police were investigating multiple gay men reported missing – who were all of a similar age, height, and weight. In 1994, a man named Tony Harris contacted the Marion County Sheriff’s Department to say he believed a man who frequented the gay bars – who called himself “Brian Smart” – had likely killed his friend Roger Goodlet. Harris based this claim in Smart’s odd interest in Goodlet’s missing person case and his own near-death experience with Smart sometime earlier.
Smart was identified as Baumeister, and investigators asked to search the Fox Hollow home and property. Baumeister and Julie refused the search, but in 1996, the couple had divorced, and Julie had become fearful of her husband’s behavior, so she allowed the search to move forward.
The first search of the Baumeister property turned up the remains of eleven men, and a warrant was issued for Baumeister’s arrest. One of those victims is Roger Goodlet, whose connection to Tony Harris led to police identifying Baumeister as a potential killer.
Before police could arrest him, however, Baumeister fled to Ontario, Canada, and shot himself in the head, leaving behind a suicide note that mentioned his broken marriage and failing business but not the remains. 
On December 4, 2022, a new search of Baumeister’s old farm was conducted, and a new bone was found, along with 20 locations identified as possibly concealing more human remains, WRTV <a href="https://www.wrtv.com/news/local-news/crime/bone-found-during-sunday-search-of-herbert-baumeister-property" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reported</a> at the time.
In May 2024, another search was conducted, and authorities recovered more than 10,000 bone fragments scattered across the 18-acre property, the Indy Star <a href="https://www.indystar.com/story/news/2024/06/05/fox-hollow-farms-victims-identified-alleged-indiana-serial-killer-herbert-baumeister-wesffield/72369859007/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reported</a>. 
The remains are being analyzed, Hamilton County Coroner Jeff Jellison said, adding that just a tiny fraction of those bone fragments have been identified so far.
&#8220;We have roughly 10,000 bone fragments, and my guess is that we haven&#8217;t gone through 160 of those yet,&#8221; he said, according to the Star. &#8220;We&#8217;ve got a lot of work in front of us, but every day is a step forward.&#8221;
So far, authorities have identified at least 13 unique DNA profiles from remains found on Baumeister’s property, and nine of those have been identified as gay men who went missing in the 1990s. Four other sets of remains have not been identified yet. This number includes those found on the property in the 1996 search.
Two years ago, authorities asked family members whose loved ones went missing in the mid-1980s to mid-1990s to submit DNA samples to be compared to remains found on Baumeister’s property.
In total, that means Baumeister is currently suspected of killing at least 25 people (11 as the I-70 Strangler, and 13 more who were found on his property, plus an additional murder Baumeister was linked to posthumously). With 10,000 bone fragments to identify, that number could increase exponentially.
The world may never know the extent of Baumeister’s crime, and he will never be held accountable for his alleged actions, since he has been dead for 30 years. And because of that, he will always be a “suspected” serial killer.

Last week, the man suspected of killing four women and dumping their bodies on Gilgo Beach in New York was charged with the murders of two more women.
The accused, who is not being named by The Daily Wire, was charged with two additional murders occurring a decade apart. Their remains were not found near the original four victims. Here’s how police connected the 59-year-old architect to the two new victims, according to <a href="https://suffolkcountyny.gov/da/Newsroom/Press-Releases/gilgo-investigation-superseding-indictment-and-bail-application" target="_blank" rel="noopener">a bail application</a> filed by the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office.

In July 2003, a person walking their dog found the remains of Jessica Taylor in the Long Island, New York, village of Manorville. The remains were identified as Taylor, even though the head was missing and the arms had been removed below the elbows. A tattoo on her torso was also mangled with a sharp object.
The missing body parts were not found until March 29, 2011, on the same side of the road and less than a mile from where the remains of Maureen Brainard-Barnes, Megan Waterman, Melissa Barthelemy, and Amber Costello were found. The suspect had already been charged with their murders and pleaded not guilty.
Taylor was a sex worker in the area near where the Gilgo Beach serial killer suspect worked. He was present in the area on the day Taylor disappeared, according to evidence seized during one of the searches of the suspect’s home.
During the initial investigation after Taylor’s remains were found in 2003, a witness said they saw a dark-colored Chevrolet pickup truck backed up to the woods where the body was found. The current suspect had purchased such a vehicle in March 2002, more than a year before the remains were discovered.
When investigators analyzed digital devices taken from the suspect’s home in the past year, they found that shortly after Taylor’s body was discovered two decades earlier, the suspect had read a Newsday article about the remains and began searching for a new vehicle. The suspect attempted to delete this online activity.
When examining Taylor’s body, a male human hair was recovered from a surgical drape that had been underneath the victim. At the time, DNA testing could not be done due to the limitations of the lab, but in August 2023, the hair was tested against the DNA taken from the suspect. Results from an outside lab excluded 99.96% of the American population but could not exclude the suspect. The hair was also sent to another outside lab, which found that it was 1.847 x 10603 times more likely that the hair came from the suspect than from someone else.
Investigators also found that the suspect’s family was out of town during the time Taylor is believed to have been murdered, which aligns with his family’s absence during other murders with which he has been charged.

Costilla’s remains were found in November 1993 in the Long Island hamlet of North Sea. During the initial investigation, three hairs were found on the victim, including two male hairs from a tape-lift on the victim’s search.
In 2014, DNA profiles were developed from the hairs, and 10 years later, after the suspect was charged in the murders of four women, his DNA was compared to the DNA profile. The outside lab that determined the hair found on Jessica Taylor’s body likely belonged to the suspect made the same conclusion for the male hairs found on Costilla.
The third hair, which belonged to a female, was matched to a woman who had been living with the suspect at the time of Costilla’s disappearance, but she has not been charged in connection with the murder, nor is she suspected of assisting in the crime.
During multiple searches of the suspect’s home in Massapequa, New York, investigators found more than 350 electronic devices and began attempts to extract and analyze the data on those devices. On one hard drive, investigators were able to recover <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/gilgo-beach-serial-killer-suspect-had-a-planning-document-for-murders-district-attorney-says">a deleted document</a> that appeared to have been used as a way for the suspect to “plan out” his “kills,” according to <a href="https://suffolkcountyny.gov/da/Newsroom/Press-Releases/gilgo-investigation-superseding-indictment-and-bail-application">the bail application</a> filed by the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office.
This document mentioned that the suspect needed to avoid leaving behind hairs that could connect him to the case.
If convicted, the suspect faces multiple life sentences without the possibility of parole.

New York authorities prosecuting the man accused of killing six women and dumping their bodies on Gilgo Beach in New York say the suspect kept a “planning document” to plan the murders.
The suspect, who is not being named by The Daily Wire, was charged Thursday with the 2003 death of Jessica Taylor and the 1993 death of Sandra Costilla, ABC New York <a href="https://abc7ny.com/post/gilgo-beach-suspect-serial-killer-rex-heuermann-murders/14917073/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reported</a>. This brings the total number of women believed to have been killed by the suspect up to six.
During multiple searches of the suspect’s home in Massapequa, New York, investigators found more than 350 electronic devices and began attempts to extract and analyze the data on those devices. The document included underlined headings that read: “Problems,” “Supplies,” “DS,” and “TRG.” “DS” refers to “dump site” and “TRG” seems to stand for “target.”
Each heading includes a list, with the “Problems” list including notes such as “DNA,” “tire marks,” “blood stains,” and “fingerprints.” The complete list appears to show the lengths to which the suspect went to cover his tracks.
As for “Supplies,” the suspect listed items such as “lie/acid,” a “police scaner [sic],” “rope/cord,” and “bags/tape.” A note under the “DS” heading suggested the suspect “recon dumster [sic] locations.” And other targets, the suspect wrote “Megan?” and noted that “small is good.”
The planning document also includes three more sections, titled “Pre-Prep,” “Prep,” and “Post Event.” Under “Pre-Prep” the suspect mentions vehicle inspection, engaging the target, and looking into dump sites and weather reports, as well as looking for video cameras in these areas.
The “Prep” section discusses setting up a “stage” and “holding area” as well as setting up a table, believed by investigators to have been used for victim torture and mutilation. The final section, “Post Event,” includes notes such as “distroy [sic] file,” “change tires,” “burn gloves,” and “dispose of pic’s [sic].” It also notes that the suspect should “have story set.”

A notorious serial killer who lured dozens of women to his pig farm before killing them has been attacked in prison and is currently on life support.
Robert Pickton, 74, was being held in a segregated unit in a British Columbia, Canada, maximum security prison when he was attacked by another inmate on May 19 with a broken broom handle, the Vancouver Sun <a href="https://vancouversun.com/news/local-news/robert-pickton-victims-relatives-savage-prison-attack-serial-killer" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reported</a>. As of Tuesday, he remains in a Quebec City hospital in critical condition and is not expected to recover.
Pickton and his brother grew up working on their parents’ pig farm in Port Coquitlam, British Columbia, about 17 miles east of Vancouver. When their parents died, the brothers inherited the farm and sold off parts of it to build a facility to hold dance parties, which often included local sex workers and members of the Hells Angels motorcycle gang.
In 1997, Pickton was charged with the attempted murder of Wendy Lynn Eistetter, a sex worker who was stabbed several times. The charge was stayed because Eistetter was a drug user and couldn’t be counted on for her testimony.
In 2002, the brothers were arrested after police searched the farm for illegal firearms. Authorities returned with another search warrant based on things they had seen at the farm that pertained to an investigation into missing women, including personal items belonging to the women.
On February 22, 2002, Pickton was charged with first-degree murder for the deaths of Sereena Abotsway and Mona Wilson. Less than two months later, he was charged with the murders of Jacqueline McDonell, Dianne Rock, and Heather Bottomley. Shortly after that, he was charged for the murders of Andrea Joesbury and Brenda Wolfe.
In September of that year, he was charged with four more murders. In October, he received another four murder charges.
Years later, in May 2005, Pickton was charged with 12 more murders, bringing the total up to 27.

During one of the excavations of Pickton’s property, government officials discovered evidence that suggested Pickton may have ground up some of his victims and mixed them with the pork he sold to customers. A consumer health warning was issued, <a href="https://www.theglobeandmail.com/news/national/alert-issued-about-meat-from-picktons-pig-farm/article1129163/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">according to the Globe and Mail</a>.
On December 9, 2007, Pickton was found not guilty on six counts of first-degree murder. The jury instead found him guilty on six counts of second-degree murder. The charges against him for the other women were eventually stayed, since he would not be able to receive additional punishment under Canadian law.
He was sentenced to the maximum allowable punishment – life in prison with no eligibility for parole until after 25 years.
Cynthia Cardinal, whose sister was one of Pickton’s victims, told the Sun that the news of Pickton’s impending death gives her “a little bit of closure,” adding that she could feel her sister’s spirit and that “the devil is gone.”

Authorities are operating under this theory, the source said, as they continue to search the suspect’s home for trace evidence of the victims. Killing them at his own home would have allowed him to control the environment while having easy access to the materials found along with the victims at Gilgo Beach, such as tape and burlap bags.
Four bodies were found within days of each other. The body of Barthelemy was found on December 11, 2010, during a police training exercise with a K9, according to <a href="https://www.documentcloud.org/documents/23876053-heuermann-bail-application" target="_blank" rel="noopener">a bail application</a> obtained by the Daily Beast. Two days later, police searched the area and discovered the three other bodies.
If convicted, the suspect faces multiple life sentences without the possibility of parole.
