It’s always nice to be in San Diego. I feel even better about it now that we have a functioning southern border again. We’re less than 20 miles from Tijuana. But since January 20, our odds of running into face-tattooed foreign gangsters in the Gaslamp Quarter has dropped precipitously. 
The ones who are still here are most likely in hiding right now. They know that at any moment, Tom Homan might leap out from behind a corner with a big butterfly net and drag them all back to Mexico. This is a happy turn of events. But some on the Left seem not to realize it. Some of the Left argue — and even some on the squishy Right argue — that rounding up and deporting even the very worst illegal aliens in our country is somehow anti-American.
Now, whatever you think about mass deportations, it’s silly to argue that it’s anti-American. Deporting people is a tried-and-true American tradition, whether we’re talking about Indian Removal in 1830; the Palmer Raids in 1919 and 1920, which deported foreign communists; deportation of Japanese nationals after Pearl Harbor; Operation Wetback in 1954, which deported well over a million people in a single year; the deportation of Haitians and Cubans who had arrived during the Mariel boatlift in 1980; or any other number of deportations. 
One can argue over the necessity or prudence of those various deportations, most of which, ironically, were carried out by prominent Democrat presidents. But no one can argue that deportations aren’t American. As a simple matter of history, mass deportations are as American as apple pie.
The “anti-American” charge vanquished, opponents of immigration enforcement will next argue that deportations are somehow “un-Christian.” This claim is contradicted by the plain text of scripture. Deportations or worse — usually worse — are frequently carried out with approval in the Bible. Just ask the Canaanites. (Or the Amorites. Or the Hittites. Or the Perizzites, the Hivites, or the Jebusites.)
Now, in fairness, scripture also instructs us not to oppress or mistreat foreigners who live in our lands. “Thou shalt not molest a stranger, nor afflict him: for yourselves also were strangers in the land of Egypt” (Exodus <a href="https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Exodus%2022%3A21&amp;version=DRA">22:21</a>). Quite right. But what exactly does it mean not to “molest” or “afflict” the stranger? We are not left idly to wonder. Scripture tells us.
Just 10 chapters prior in the Book of Exodus, we read, “There shall be one law for the native and for the stranger who sojourns among you” (Exodus <a href="https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Exodus%2012%3A%2049&amp;version=ESV" target="_blank" rel="noopener">12:49</a>). Further, in Deuteronomy, we read, “Cursed be he who perverts the justice due to the sojourner” (Deuteronomy <a href="https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Deuteronomy%2027%3A19&amp;version=RSV" target="_blank" rel="noopener">27:19</a>). To hear the open borders crowd tell it, it’s the enforcement of the law which oppresses the foreigner. But scripture says the opposite. 
Scripture tells us that it’s lawlessness which oppresses the foreigner. The injunction not to oppress the foreigner does not run contrary to justice; rather, it is bound up in the execution of justice. God demands that the civil authority give the foreigner his due; He doesn’t demand that it give him more than his due. He tells us that there must be one law common to native and foreigner alike; he does not insist that foreigners be given a more lenient law, that foreigners be given special privileges over and above those afforded to citizens. Civil authorities must give appropriate care to foreigners, but they have to care for their own citizens too.

So how do we determine the right balance between hospitality to foreigners and the enforcement of justice owed to citizens and foreigners alike?
Our Vice President JD Vance took a stab at that question on TV, and his answer sparked a national debate. Vice President Vance <a href="https://www.standingforfreedom.com/2025/02/full-time-vice-president-part-time-public-theologian/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a>, “There’s this old school — and I think a very Christian concept, by the way — that you love your family and then you love your neighbor, and then you love your community, and then you love your fellow citizens, and your own country, and then after that you can focus and prioritize the rest of the world.” 
It’s a simple enough concept. Let’s say you’re walking by a public pool, and you see a random little kid drowning. Any decent person would immediately jump in to save the kid. (That actually happened to my father a few years ago at his apartment complex. He saw the kid, he jumped in, and he pulled him out of the water.) Everyone applauds. You’re a hero.
Now imagine you’re walking past the same pool — it’s a very large pool — and you see two kids drowning, each at a different end. One of the toddlers is that same random kid and the other is your own son. You, being a decent person, want to save both. But you help your own son first. In fact, if you did not — if you were to ignore the cries of your son and go to help the other boy first — everyone would not applaud when you climbed out of the pool. You would not be a hero. You would have made a moral error. Because you, as a father, have a greater responsibility to your own son than you do to someone else’s son.
This is common sense. But is it Christian? Immediately after Vance made those remarks, a former U.K. government minister and current Yale professor, Rory Stewart, said no. He <a href="https://x.com/RoryStewartUK/status/1884952501197078922" target="_blank" rel="noopener">wrote</a>, “A bizarre take on John <a href="https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=John%2015%3A12-13&amp;version=ESV" target="_blank" rel="noopener">15:12-13</a>”— which is “This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you. Greater love has no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.” “Less Christian,” Stewart wrote, “and more pagan tribal. We should start worrying when politicians become theologians, assume to speak for Jesus, and tell us in which order to love.” 
This comment was ironic, of course, because Rory Stewart is also a politician presuming to speak for Our Lord, albeit with far less knowledge and seriousness than JD Vance. Vance shot back. He <a href="https://x.com/JDVance/status/1885073046400012538?lang=en" target="_blank" rel="noopener">wrote</a>, “Just google ‘ordo amoris,’” which means “order of love,” a concept developed most notably by Saint Thomas Aquinas.
Just a quick pause for a moment. Can we just take a moment to appreciate how beautiful it is that we have a vice president lecturing leftists on moral philosophy in Latin? I knew the second Trump administration was going to be good. I had high hopes. But even I did not have “vice president explicating scholastic philosophy in Latin” hopes. I remember in 2016 when many on the Right yelled at me for supporting Trump on the grounds that he wasn’t a “true conservative.” Now his vice president is invoking Saint Thomas Aquinas in Latin on X. How much more conservative do you want him to get?
But I digress. At this point in the conversation, after Vance had dunked on the U.K. politician-turned-Yale professor, another Yale figure — James Surowiecki, editor of The Yale Review — decided to chime in <a href="https://x.com/JamesSurowiecki/status/1885302779058557080" target="_blank" rel="noopener">to claim</a> that “ordo amoris is not in the Gospels.” He claimed, “It’s an essentially Aristotelian concept that Aquinas, cleverly if unconvincingly, imported into Catholic theology.” 
Now, up until this point, I was aware that very few people presently associated with Yale had even a passing familiarity with the Bible. But with that comment it became clear that these Yale luminaries don’t even know their Aristotle! What is going on in New Haven? This is embarrassing.
The ordo amoris — or the ordo caritatis, as Saint Thomas would call it — is not “essentially Aristotelian,” and Saint Thomas — among the clearest thinkers who ever lived — did not import that or any other concept “unconvincingly” into Catholic theology. Aristotle touches on the concept broadly in Book IV of “Nicomachean Ethics,” where he writes that “the liberal man” — liberal in this case meaning “generous” — “like other virtuous men, will give for the sake of the noble, and rightly; for he will give to the right people, the right amounts, and at the right time, with all the other qualifications that accompany right giving.”
Early Christian writers, notably Saints Augustine, Gregory the Great, and Bernard of Clairvaux, also discuss this order of charity, all before Saint Thomas, who brings the concept to its fullest expression in the “Summa Theologiae,” Secunda Secundae, Question 26, where he <a href="https://www.newadvent.org/summa/3026.htm" target="_blank" rel="noopener">writes</a>, “There must needs be some order in things loved out of charity, which order is in reference to the first principle of that love, which is God.”
So, we are obligated as a matter of reason to love God before ourselves, then to love ourselves before our neighbors, then to love our neighbors more than our own bodies, then to love those neighbors nearer to us more than those further away from us, then to love those connected to us by ties of blood more than others, and so on.

Another major fire has engulfed an area in Los Angeles County, as the Hughes Fire that started on Wednesday morning north of Santa Clarita and near Castaic has covered more than 10,000 acres and is only 14% contained.
According to Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert Luna, roughly 31,000 area residents threatened by the Hughes Fire were under evacuation orders and 23,000 under evacuation warnings by Wednesday night.
“We’re still expecting some dry humidity and then gusts of winds possible up to 60 mph,” Cal Fire Battalion Chief David Acuna said. “It’s super dry. Anyone spark will have a new start of a fire that establishes and raises quickly.”
Los Angeles County Fire Capt. Sheila Kelliher reassured the public, telling <a href="https://www.cnn.com/2025/01/23/us/hughes-fire-los-angeles-county-thursday/index.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">CNN</a> that water supply should not be a problem, as fire crews have access to Castaic Lake and other reservoirs.

However, a new problem may arise this weekend as rain is expected to fall, possibly causing mudslides. “The Los Angeles and San Diego areas will get more rain this weekend than in the last six months combined,” CNN reported.

It behaves more like cement; the ground can’t accept the water, so it all goes to runoff immediately.&#8221;

A Customs and Border Protection pilot was killed Monday in a helicopter crash near the California-Mexico border. 
CBP said that the agent, an unidentified Air Interdiction Agent, was on a security mission when the helicopter went down in Potrero, California, in San Diego County. The Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation and Safety Board are <a href="https://www.foxnews.com/us/us-customs-border-protection-pilot-killed-helicopter-crash-near-san-diego" target="_blank" rel="noopener">investigating</a> the crash. 
“On December 16, a CBP Air and Marine Operations aircraft on a border security mission was involved in an aviation mishap in the vicinity of Potrero, California,” a CBP spokesman <a href="https://x.com/BillMelugin_/status/1868825846208983182" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a>. “Tragically, a CBP Air Interdiction Agent &#8211; the pilot and sole occupant of the aircraft &#8211; was pronounced deceased at the scene. Additional information will be provided as it becomes available.”
NBC San Diego <a href="https://www.nbcsandiego.com/news/local/1-dead-helicopter-crashes-far-east-san-diego-county/3702060/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reported</a> that the helicopter went down in the middle of a field in a hemp farm. 
According to CBP, Air Interdiction Agents “perform air law enforcement operations involving the detection, prevention, interdiction, and apprehension of terrorist, terrorist weapons and other contraband and persons from illegally entering or attacking the United States.”
Earlier this year, the San Diego sector became one of the hot spots for illegal crossings into the United States, <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2024/06/04/us/san-diego-migrants-california.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">including</a> over 37,000 in April alone. 
Republican San Diego County Board Supervisor Jim Desmond <a href="https://www.newsnationnow.com/us-news/new-ordinance-san-diego-countys-sanctuary-status/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a> last week that the area is one of the worst in the country for human and drug trafficking. He told NewsNation that around 155,000 illegal migrants have been released into San Diego since 2022.

California law prohibits the Board of Supervisors from interfering with the independent, constitutionally and statutorily designated investigative functions of the Sheriff, and is clear that the Sheriff has the sole and exclusive authority to operate the county jails.”

On Tuesday, the San Diego County Board of Supervisors voted 3-1 for a policy that would turn the jurisdiction into a “super sanctuary” county, thereby preventing its sheriff&#8217;s department from notifying ICE about illegal immigrants who had committed violent crimes.
The policy goes beyond California state law and will <a href="https://apnews.com/article/san-diego-county-trump-deportation-sanctuary-ee8603c35d2ee6700d1eda22139bcf88">require</a> a judge&#8217;s order for ICE to receive assistance from the county to transfer illegal immigrants convicted of violent crimes to immigration authorities.
San Diego County Sheriff Kelly A. Martinez <a href="https://www.sdsheriff.gov/Home/Components/News/News/3102/16">immediately responded</a>, issuing a statement that said: “The Sheriff&#8217;s Office will not change its practices based on the Board resolution and policy that was passed at today&#8217;s meeting. The Board of Supervisors does not set policy for the Sheriff&#8217;s Office. The Sheriff, as an independently elected official, sets the policy for the Sheriff&#8217;s Office. California law prohibits the Board of Supervisors from interfering with the independent, constitutionally and statutorily designated investigative functions of the Sheriff, and is clear that the Sheriff has the sole and exclusive authority to operate the county jails.”
“I think this policy goes beyond California’s existing sanctuary laws by adding an additional layer of bureaucracy that hinders local law enforcement from directly notifying ICE about illegal immigrants who are currently in our jails,” Supervisor Jim Desmond, the lone dissenting vote, declared. “And they have committed heinous crimes, including child abuse or endangerment, driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, but only if this conviction is for a felony, possession of an unlawful deadly weapon, gang-related offenses, a crime resulting in death or involving personal affliction or great bodily injury, possession or use of a firearm in the commission of an offense, torture, rape, and kidnapping. That’s the population we’re talking about.”

He pointed out that if an illegal immigrant committed one of those crimes, “San Diego County would be legally prohibited from directly coordinating with ICE &#8230; effectively protecting these offenders from deportation.”

This reckless measure not only goes far beyond California&#8217;s already extreme Sanctuary State laws but actively endangers our communities by shielding illegal immigrant criminals from deportation.”
“I have already been in contact with the incoming Administration and will fight relentlessly to undo this disastrous policy and ensure that illegal immigrant criminals are removed from our neighborhoods,” he concluded.

San Diego County Board Of Supervisors Votes To Protect Violent Illegals. Sheriff Fires Back.

It&#8217;s not every day that you accidentally stumble upon a vast conspiracy among the nation&#8217;s various local police departments — especially when it&#8217;s a conspiracy that relates to the upcoming presidential election. But yesterday, as I was watching some reporting about New York City&#8217;s decision to decriminalize jaywalking, that&#8217;s exactly what I did.
In case you missed it, yes, New York&#8217;s city council just voted to <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/nyc-legalizes-jaywalking-supporters-complain-laws-against-it-had-racial-implications" target="_blank" rel="noopener">decriminalize jaywalking</a>. No one&#8217;s going to get any more tickets for crossing against the light, or for walking in the middle of the street. Technically, jaywalkers still don&#8217;t have the right of way, so I guess they might have some liability if they cause an accident. But realistically, it&#8217;s open season for jaywalking in the city. The mayor, Eric Adams, didn&#8217;t take any official action on this bill to decriminalize jaywalking — probably because he&#8217;s busy with the Biden administration&#8217;s attempts to throw him in prison — so the bill has now automatically become law.
Here&#8217;s a report on the new law from a local news station. And as you listen to this, pay close attention to what the male anchor says in the beginning:

That&#8217;s an interesting little hypothetical. The Democrat politician asks: &#8220;When was the last time you said, &#8216;I&#8217;m happy they caught that jaywalker?'&#8221; And then the reporter says &#8220;Never.&#8221; Therefore, we&#8217;re meant to conclude we don&#8217;t need the law against jaywalking.
First of all, if you&#8217;ve ever been unfortunate enough to drive a vehicle in New York, then the answer to this question would be a resounding &#8220;Yes.&#8221; You would scream with joy if the police arrested every single pedestrian who was walking in the road, even if they were there legally. Pedestrians make driving about a million times slower and more annoying in New York. Drivers in New York wouldn&#8217;t shed a single tear if it became a capital offense to jaywalk.
But even if we pretend that&#8217;s not true, it&#8217;s a pretty interesting argument that these women are advancing, if you think about it. They&#8217;re saying that, if you&#8217;ve never stopped yourself and said, &#8220;I&#8217;m happy they caught that guy for violating law X,&#8221; then we don&#8217;t need law X anymore.

It&#8217;s arguably not a bad way of looking at things, but coming from Democrats in New York, it&#8217;s a pretty entertaining approach. Imagine these people applying this principle to, say, New York&#8217;s business records law — the one they accused Trump of violating. Prior to Trump, has anyone in the history of New York ever found themselves saying that they&#8217;re really glad that someone was held accountable for victimless, misdemeanor record keeping violations that happened 7 years ago? Obviously the answer to that question is no. So why do we have those laws on the books? It would be fun to watch that politician (and the reporter) answer that particular question.
It would also be entertaining to ask these women whether we should get rid of, say, the entire tax code while we&#8217;re at it. After all, I don&#8217;t see anyone celebrating IRS agents who audit people for not reporting $600 they just received on Venmo. So why don&#8217;t we decriminalize every single accounting offense and tax code violation? Those aren&#8217;t rhetorical questions. It&#8217;d be a great idea. But of course, these questions never occur to Democrats in New York. They&#8217;re enforcing &#8220;equity,&#8221; not logic.
In any event, back to my conspiracy. You may have noticed how the anchor (and the politician) explained the reasoning for this new law. But let&#8217;s focus on the anchor for now, because he actually seems pretty skeptical of the law. As the anchor put it, &#8220;The overwhelming majority of jaywalking tickets were given to minorities. So why didn&#8217;t they just level the playing field on these tickets?&#8221;
In other words, the anchor wants to know why the police didn&#8217;t simply ticket more white people for jaywalking, while ticketing fewer blacks and Hispanics. Wouldn&#8217;t that solve the whole problem? If we did that, then instead of 90% of jaywalking tickets going to black people and Hispanics, we could make it closer to, say, 40%. And then racial equity will be achieved.
This is the kind of question you only ask when you&#8217;ve been subjected to decades of lies about crime statistics by Democrats like Kamala Harris and Barack Obama, to the point that you actually believe them. It&#8217;s a question that makes a very significant assumption that happens to have no basis in reality. And that assumption is that members of every racial group are jaywalking at precisely the same rates.
If you truly believe that assumption is true, then there is indeed a vast conspiracy among thousands of local police departments, all over the country. There&#8217;s no other explanation for what&#8217;s going on. That&#8217;s because, as I&#8217;ve discovered, these so-called &#8220;racial disparities&#8221; in jaywalking enforcement happen to exist everywhere — not just in New York. 
Here&#8217;s a report from San Diego from a couple of years ago, for example. For some reason, they interviewed a guy who had a beef over his jaywalking ticket. And then they get into the statistics, which reveal just how deep the rot goes in the San Diego police department. Watch:

So, 16% of the tickets went to blacks, even though they make up only 6% of the population. And this is &#8220;proof,&#8221; according to the activist, that the police are racist. There can&#8217;t be any other explanation for that data. And she doesn&#8217;t stop there: &#8220;Black people are disproportionately affected by almost every type of decriminalization.&#8221;
Well, that gives you some sense of just how widespread the conspiracy is. Across every type of crime, across the entire country, the police are enforcing laws in a racist manner. It can&#8217;t possibly be that different demographic groups are committing different rates of crime. That&#8217;s just unthinkable. Instead, you&#8217;re commanded to think that any difference in crime statistics must be due to one thing and one thing only, which is racist cops.
A few weeks ago, I <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/this-shockingly-easy-test-has-been-deemed-racist-heres-why" target="_blank" rel="noopener">talked about</a> how the DOJ used this &#8220;reasoning&#8221; during the Obama administration to sue various police departments for enforcing the law. One of the cities they went after was Ferguson, Missouri — which also happens to have an issue with &#8220;disproportionate&#8221; jaywalking tickets. That&#8217;s how vast this conspiracy of racist traffic cops is. Watch:

The data just keeps coming in. If you&#8217;re keeping track, from New York to San Diego to Ferguson, racist traffic cops are &#8220;targeting&#8221; black Americans for jaywalking. In fact these racist cops are so brazen that they&#8217;ll often target these black Americans *on video*. That&#8217;s what happened in Jacksonville a few years ago. This is a video from Vox that tries really, really hard to present a police officer as racist for doing his job and enforcing the law. Watch:

From this clip, we can conclude that even when there&#8217;s video of a cop enforcing the law in a calm and impartial way — and even when everyone concedes that these people were jaywalking — we&#8217;re told it&#8217;s still racist because of those statistics. It doesn&#8217;t matter if black people are on video jaywalking, basically. It&#8217;s illegal to ticket them for it because then you&#8217;ll have a &#8220;disparate impact.&#8221;
It&#8217;s hard to overstate how widespread this moral panic has become. Over the past few years, especially at the height of BLM, there were national news stories about supposedly &#8220;racist&#8221; jaywalking arrests. Here&#8217;s one of them in Tulsa:

The lawyer&#8217;s not even arguing his client is innocent, really. He&#8217;s implying that the optics are bad for the police because they should know that it&#8217;s racist to enforce jaywalking laws against black people. 
This incident made national news. There was a legal battle that stretched on for years. Apparently the police eventually paid a $20,000 settlement over it. And they did nothing wrong. When people are in the middle of the road, you can grab them and arrest them. You can even put them on the ground when they&#8217;re not responding. That&#8217;s how the law should work. But in cities like New York, it&#8217;s not the law anymore.
This is a battle the Left has waged for a very long time. Last year, the Left-wing outlet Mother Jones published an article <a href="https://www.motherjones.com/politics/2023/02/legalize-jaywalking/">entitled</a>, &#8220;The Case for Legalizing Jaywalking.&#8221; It makes all the predictable &#8220;disparate impact&#8221; arguments, where they assume that any statistical disparity is somehow proof of racism. 
And then there&#8217;s <a href="https://www.motherjones.com/politics/2023/02/legalize-jaywalking/">this paragraph</a>, which is a real doozy:
<blockquote>The notion that pedestrians should be relegated to sidewalks and allowed to cross the street only when a walk sign tells them it’s safe is a relatively new phenomenon. &#8230; Groups ranging from the Chicago Motor Club and the Automobile Club of Southern California to the National Safety Council and the Boy Scouts began using the word &#8216;jaywalker&#8217; in the late 1910s and early 1920s to insult pedestrians who had the audacity to enter the roadway outside of intersections. &#8230; Los Angeles passed the first anti-jaywalking ordinance in 1925, which became a model for other cities across the country. Discrimination soon followed.</blockquote>
Yes, according to Mother Jones, the idea that you shouldn&#8217;t walk in the middle of the street is a &#8220;relatively new phenomenon&#8221; that only began in the late 1910s and early 1920s. It&#8217;s possible — and I&#8217;m just spitballing here — that one reason for this change might be that cars themselves are a relatively new phenomenon that only became popular in the late 1910s and early 1920s. Maybe that&#8217;s why the idea of jaywalking came about &#8220;relatively recently,&#8221; as in, a century ago. This is like saying air sickness is a relatively new phenomenon that only began after people started flying in airplanes. It kind of goes without saying.

But this is the level of &#8220;argument&#8221; you get when &#8220;equity&#8221; is the objective. You have to act surprised that we didn&#8217;t have jaywalking laws before we had cars. You&#8217;re reduced to inventing vast conspiracies to explain inconvenient data. In essence, you have to make yourself as dumb as Kamala Harris — all in the service of a delusional and counterfactual ideology.
In this particular case, the consequences couldn&#8217;t be any more obvious. You can visit any third-world country to see what it’s like when cars and pedestrians share the road equally. It&#8217;s total chaos. I’m not usually one to defend government regulation, but our roads are clearly safer and more orderly because of the laws and regulations in place. New York City is getting rid of a common-sense law that obviously makes the roads safer for everyone.
And they&#8217;re doing it because of the same guiding principle that the Biden-Harris administration outlined in a day-one executive order, which is to pursue &#8220;equity&#8221; in all aspects of government. We&#8217;ve talked a lot about the specific policy ramifications of electing someone like Kamala Harris, but this is another consequence that&#8217;s worth talking about. Presidents don&#8217;t just set policy. They also set a tone and a broader agenda. They set an example for people to follow all over the country.
A Kamala Harris administration would encourage and incentivize many more laws like the one that just passed in New York. A second Trump administration, on the other hand, would send a very clear signal that people are tired of lawlessness. It would mean that we can finally put an end to the fiction that every police department in the country is conspiring to &#8220;target&#8221; any particular racial group. It would be a rebuke of the policies of &#8220;racial equity&#8221; that have gotten so many people killed, across every demographic. That&#8217;s a rebuke that, for people living in New York, may come too late. But for the rest of us, it can&#8217;t come soon enough.

Five years ago a 47-year-old man from Senegal hijacked a school bus full of children just outside Milan, the business capital of Italy. He ordered the teachers and a janitor to restrain all the children with zip ties. His motive was clear: The man threatened to carry out a &#8220;massacre&#8221; to avenge all of the illegal migrants who drowned on their way to Europe. Essentially, he wanted open borders, and he was threatening to commit mass murder to get it. And he seemed intent on making good on that promise: During a 40-minute rampage, the man rammed the school bus into several cars on a highway before lighting the bus on fire. At that point, the 51 children on board managed to escape, thanks in part to the adults who didn&#8217;t actually secure the zip ties on any of the students.
This 2019 school bus hijacking changed the trajectory of Italy&#8217;s politics overnight, and you can see why. People will buy into a lot of very bad policies in the name of tolerance and acceptance and so on. But when a guy from Senegal hijacks a school bus full of children and tries to light them on fire, it&#8217;s pretty clear that a red line has been crossed. That&#8217;s an unmistakable sign that things need to change. And voters in Italy responded accordingly. It&#8217;s one of the reasons Meloni was elected prime minister in 2022, on a platform calling for a naval blockade to keep illegal migrants out of the country.
On Wednesday, this country came very close to experiencing a similar incident in the state of California, which long ago adopted European-style migration policies. On two separate occasions, groups of illegal migrants attempted to board a school bus on the highway near the Mexican border, in the Jamul-Dulzura Union School District. In the first instance, three men stood in the middle of the highway, apparently attempting to force the bus to stop. In the second instance, a group of about 20 illegal migrants were waiting on another route for another bus. It&#8217;s not clear if the same illegal aliens were involved in both of these incidents. So the plan is apparently to just leave the kids at the bus stop next time with the &#8220;migrants.&#8221; What else can you possibly do? Surely you can&#8217;t have the police round up and arrest this group of people who are in this country illegally, terrorizing children and threatening to hijack buses. That would just be unthinkable, intolerant even. So instead, the children can just fend for themselves. The school bus will get out of dodge like the last chopper out of Hanoi.

Meanwhile the sheriff&#8217;s office in San Diego says they&#8217;re investigating to determine &#8220;if a criminal act has occurred.&#8221; They&#8217;re not quite sure if standing in the middle of the road, or being in the country illegally, or threatening to hijack a school bus are really crimes. Maybe bus hijacking has been decriminalized too. They&#8217;re still looking into it.
This is one of those moments where an abstract policy debate suddenly becomes a lot less abstract. It&#8217;s one thing to talk about how &#8220;no person is illegal&#8221; and so on. But it&#8217;s quite another to tolerate something like this. And there are very clear signs that Americans, like Italians, are tired of tolerating it. Earlier this year Axios <a href="https://www.axios.com/2024/04/25/trump-biden-americans-illegal-immigration-poll" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reported</a> on a poll showing that: &#8220;Half of Americans — including 42% of Democrats — say they&#8217;d support mass deportations of undocumented immigrants.&#8221; Additionally, &#8220;two-thirds of Americans said illegal immigration is a real crisis, not a politically driven media narrative.&#8221;
As more people see the unavoidable consequences of mass migration in their everyday lives, support for mass deportations is only going to increase even further. The reality of unrestricted illegal migration is that everyday events suddenly become a lot more dangerous, all over the place, to the point that the policy itself becomes untenable.
That&#8217;s why it&#8217;s not just Californians who can&#8217;t escape these consequences anymore. In Aurora Colorado, an apartment complex has reportedly been taken over by a Venezuelan street gang. Surveillance footage shows gunmen with rifles walking around with impunity. There&#8217;s trash everywhere, residents report that a bunch of illegal aliens moved in recently, and shootings are commonplace. Watch:

Several police departments in Colorado have responded to this footage. For their part, Aurora PD says they&#8217;re &#8220;aware&#8221; that &#8220;components&#8221; of this Venezuelan gang (known as T.d.A) are operating in the area. The police department also says it has been &#8220;increasingly collecting evidence to show the gang is connected to crimes in the area,&#8221; although they claim that these crimes are &#8220;isolated,&#8221; whatever that means. But here&#8217;s the most incredible part of the statement.
&#8220;The city and Aurora Police Department, as previously stated, established a special task force in collaboration with other local, state and federal partners to specifically address concerns about Venezuelan gang Tren de Aragua (TdA) and other criminal activity *affecting migrant communities.*”
So they say the gang is committing &#8220;criminal activity affecting migrant communities.&#8221; But obviously, it&#8217;s not just affecting the &#8220;migrant communities.&#8221; It&#8217;s affecting the millions of American citizens who pay taxes in Colorado — people the Aurora police department is supposedly sworn to protect. But they don&#8217;t even get a mention in the police department&#8217;s statement. Even when they&#8217;re talking about the takeover of an apartment building by illegal aliens, the police are still primarily concerned with the illegal aliens.

Meanwhile Denver PD released its own <a href="https://x.com/DenverPolice/status/1828902961138811317" target="_blank" rel="noopener">statement</a>. They actually do mention the &#8220;residents&#8221; of their community, and not just the &#8220;migrants.&#8221; So that&#8217;s something. They also denied that an apartment was &#8220;taken over,&#8221; despite the video evidence to the contrary. That assessment would also contradict the conclusion of Aurora&#8217;s mayor, who just said on national television that multiple buildings have fallen to Venezuelan gangs, and it&#8217;s possible they were funded by the U.S.government:

This would seem like something the Denver police department should know about. But to be fair, they admitted that the Venezuelan gang is committing a lot of crimes and they&#8217;re, &#8220;learning&#8221; about.
And there&#8217;s a lot of that kind of &#8220;learning&#8221; going on right now in Colorado, one way or the other. This week for example, the residents of Colorado learned that illegal immigrants can legally drive big rigs on the road, kill American citizens while driving recklessly, and then get off with a maximum sentence of one year in prison. That&#8217;s what&#8217;s happening now in the case of Ignacio Cruz-Mendoza, an illegal alien without a valid commercial driver&#8217;s license who crashed his 18-wheeler into a car being driven by Scott Miller. Allegedly the Democrat DA&#8217;s office just made an innocent little mistake here. Apparently it&#8217;s their first day on the job. They didn&#8217;t realize that by charging this illegal alien with misdemeanors and nothing else, that he could then plead guilty to those misdemeanors. And then double jeopardy kicks in, and they can&#8217;t charge him anymore. This was all supposedly totally unforeseeable to the DA. 
In order to believe that, you&#8217;d have to know nothing about the leadership of the state of Colorado, which goes out of its way to mock concerns about illegal alien crime. In response to the apartment takeover I mentioned earlier, for example, the state&#8217;s governor, Jared Polis, put out a snarky statement mocking Aurora City Councilwoman Danielle Jurinsky, who initially complained about the incident. Polis&#8217; office said, &#8220;the purported invasion is largely a feature of Danielle Jurinsky’s imagination.” (Even though it&#8217;s on tape).  He also said crime has been going down.
This is the extent of the response that voters in Left-wing states can expect when they object to the systematic destruction of their way of life. The more they complain about school bus hijackings, apartment takeovers and highway crashes, the more their leaders will laugh at them. There&#8217;s precedent for this; it&#8217;s what happened in Italy, among many other European nations. And if that precedent is any indication, it means that we are getting very close to the point at which people have had enough. And when that point comes, none of these people will be in power. They&#8217;ll be replaced with leaders who, like Meloni, will promise to end unrestricted migration. And hopefully, unlike Meloni, the people we elect will actually fulfill that promise.

More than 20 illegal immigrants in southern California attempted to board school buses on two separate occasions as the buses were on routes transporting children, school district officials said.
Two bus routes in the Jamul-Dulzura Union School District were interrupted by groups of illegal immigrants earlier this week, forcing the school district to warn parents to &#8220;stay [vigilant],&#8221; Fox 5 San Diego <a href="https://fox5sandiego.com/news/local-news/migrants-attempt-to-board-school-buses-in-east-county/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reported</a>. The first incident happened on Tuesday afternoon and involved three men walking in the middle of the road and trying to get the school bus filled with children to stop. Superintendent Liz Bystedt said that the bus had to &#8220;go around&#8221; the group to continue on its route.
On Wednesday, another bus stopped at a designated pick-up spot near where the bus from Tuesday was forced to drive around illegal immigrants and was met with a group of 20 illegal immigrants who attempted to board the bus. Bystedt said that parents who were at the bus stop waiting with their children ensured that the kids made it onto the bus safely and that no illegal immigrants boarded.
It is unknown if the groups are connected, the Fox report said.

The superintendent said that the district reported both bus incidents to the U.S. Border Patrol, California Highway Patrol, and San Diego County Sheriff’s Department, according to Fox 5.
“The San Diego Sheriff’s Office was made aware of this incident today. We are conducting a follow up investigation to determine if a criminal act has occurred. The Sheriff’s Office takes issues regarding student safety very seriously and are working with the school district in order to keep the students and our community safe,” the sheriff&#8217;s office said in a statement.
Jamul is just 25 miles from the Mexican border city of Tijuana. The San Diego sector has been a hot spot for illegal border crossing this year, with more than 37,000 arrests made by the U.S. Border Patrol in the area in April, the Associated Press <a href="https://apnews.com/article/san-diego-border-asylum-biden-mexico-da1e7b7c81e4e58912deff6d36dbdb9e" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reported</a>.
As authorities investigate the incidents, the school district said that bus drivers will drive past any bus stops where suspected illegal immigrants are present and told parents to follow the bus to the next stop &#8220;for the safety of students and bus drivers.&#8221;

House Speaker <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/mike-johnson" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Mike Johnson</a> (R-LA) visited the U.S. southern border on Thursday, calling out President <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/joe-biden" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Joe Biden</a> and Vice President Kamala Harris over their handling of illegal immigration.
In a visit to the San Ysidro Port of Entry in San Diego alongside Rep. Darrell Issa (R-CA), Johnson specifically went after the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee and called for Congress to pass new legislation to safeguard elections from non-citizen voting. San Diego has been a hot spot for unlawful crossings in recent months, with tens of thousands of migrants crossing into California. 
&#8220;This has become in many ways the epicenter of the Biden-Harris border catastrophe, and now we’re very concerned in Congress that this illegal immigrant invasion is threatening even the integrity of our elections,” Johnson <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tGndM5nx3Uk" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a>. 
He added that the “catastrophe” at the border had been “engineered” by the Biden-Harris administration. He said, “Border czar and San Francisco radical Kamala Harris bears the responsibility for this disaster.”
“And now we’ve all seen on our television screens, there’s yet another caravan of immigrants heading to the border to get in here. And of course they want to come in before the election because they believe there may be a good chance that President Trump wins that election. I certainly believe that and this won’t be tolerated any longer,” Johnson said.
The House speaker also discussed the SAVE Act, legislation that would require individuals to show proof of citizenship to register to vote in elections for federal office. 
“Kamala Harris and 198 House Democrats want to allow illegal aliens to decide American elections, and right now every non-citizen can do that, and there’s no real impediment except the honor system,” he said. “We don’t believe that is going to work.”
While the GOP-controlled House <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/nearly-all-house-dems-vote-against-bill-requiring-voters-prove-citizenship" target="_blank" rel="noopener">passed</a> the SAVE Act earlier this month, the Democrat-controlled Senate has not taken it up. The White House also voiced opposition to the legislation. 
Johnson was joined by National Border Patrol Council Executive Vice President John Anfinsen, who said that the situation at the border was not improving.

“Instead of crossing illegally between the ports, asylum seekers, many of whom are only seeking to abuse the system, are now primarily showing up at ports of entry and airports,” he said.
Anfinsen said that U.S. customs officers had encountered more people trying to claim asylum in June than Border Patrol had. 
Harris has come under intense scrutiny for her record as vice president after Biden’s withdrawal from the 2024 race. Much of the criticism has focused on her handling of the border crisis after Biden gave her that responsibility.

The Biden administration has reportedly released 72% of migrants who entered the country unlawfully through the San Diego border sector despite the administration&#8217;s supposed crackdown on the border.
More than 4,900 migrants have been released out of the more than 6,800 migrants border authorities encountered in the Southern California border sector between June 5 and Tuesday, according to internal federal data <a href="https://nypost.com/2024/06/11/us-news/72-of-migrants-who-crossed-into-san-diego-since-crackdown-released/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reported</a> by the New York Post.
The San Diego area is one of the busiest for illegal border crossings.
The internal federal data comes just days after a Border Patrol guidance document <a href="https://www.washingtonexaminer.com/policy/immigration/3031941/border-agents-told-release-migrants-us-biden-asylum-ban/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">leaked</a> showing agents in the San Diego area were advised to release migrants from all but six of the more than 100 countries in Africa, Asia, Australia, and Europe into the U.S. rather than deport them.
Only adult migrants from Georgia, Moldova, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan will be immediately sent to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) for deportation, the memo said.
“It’s all smoke and mirrors,” Manny Bayon, the National Border Patrol Council President for the San Diego border sector, told the Post.
One issue is that some of these countries are reluctant to accept migrants back.
“We have to have cooperation with the countries where we’re sending them back,” Bayon said.
The leaked memo was reportedly distributed to border authorities in San Diego after President Joe Biden&#8217;s executive order ostensibly cracking down on the southern border.
Biden’s order announced last week will shut down the southern border when more than 2,500 migrants cross illegally every day for seven days in a row.
Once triggered, the order will remain in effect until two weeks after daily crossings drop to an average of 1,500 a day for seven days in a row, <a href="https://nypost.com/2024/06/06/us-news/jen-psaki-makes-stunning-admission-about-bidens-border-action-its-political/?utm_campaign=nypost&amp;utm_medium=social&amp;utm_source=twitter" target="_blank" rel="noopener">according</a> to officials.

Biden declined to take questions about his executive order when announcing it, including from a reporter who asked him, “Why now?”
The president’s move comes as immigration continues to dog him in public opinion as the election cycle heats up.
Earlier this year, immigration <a href="https://news.gallup.com/poll/644570/immigration-named-top-problem-third-straight-month.aspx" target="_blank" rel="noopener">surged</a> to become the top issue on voters’ minds, bumping inflation down to second place, polls showed.
In the battleground states of Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin, immigration ranks second in importance after only the economy, which typically dominates presidential elections, a recent poll <a href="https://www.newsweek.com/biden-trump-poll-swing-states-battleground-election-1908122" target="_blank" rel="noopener">showed</a>.
Meanwhile, Biden has reversed many of former President Donald Trump’s border policies aimed at slowing the flow of illegal immigration at the U.S.-Mexico border, including the Remain in Mexico policy, which forced illegal migrants to stay on the Mexican side of the border while they awaited their asylum hearing.

Border Patrol released hundreds of illegal migrants into the streets of <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/san-diego" target="_blank" rel="noopener">San Diego</a>, and some were given court dates on the other side of the country in places they had never heard of before.
The released illegal migrants hailed from all over the world, including Senegal, China, Ecuador, Rwanda, the Dominican Republic, Mauritania, India, and Kazakhstan. They were released because Customs and Border Protection had no places to detain them until they could have their cases heard in immigration court. Local nonprofits, which have been given millions from the San Diego government to shelter the illegal migrants, did not have the infrastructure to handle the influx. 
On Friday, The Associated Press <a href="https://apnews.com/article/border-patrol-street-releases-asylum-7ae9ff48b48e203ecdd5c099942dc1f5" target="_blank" rel="noopener">spoke</a> with several who appeared to be unfamiliar with where they were or where they were told to show up in court. 
One 31-year-old man from Kazakhstan told the outlet that he was told to show up in immigration court in Philadelphia in August 2025, but that he didn’t know where that was because he had never heard of it. Philadelphia is about 2,700 miles away from San Diego. 
A Mauritanian man told the outlet that he took a flight from Africa to Nicaragua before flying to Mexico and crossing into the United States. Another man from the Dominican Republic asked, “Are we in San Diego?” and was told to head to Boston in June for an immigration court hearing in June. Boston is nearly 3,000 miles away from San Diego. 
Fox News reporter Bill Melugin posted video on Friday showing Chinese nationals being released in San Diego.

On Saturday morning, Melugin posted more footage of illegal immigrants who had been detained in the San Diego sector being released into San Ysidro. The five Marines aboard a helicopter that <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/helicopter-with-5-u-s-marines-found-after-going-missing-search-for-crew-ongoing" target="_blank" rel="noopener">went missing</a> and was later found to have crashed in California earlier this week are dead, the U.S. military said Thursday morning.
The helicopter was flying from Creech Air Force Base in Nevada to Marine Corps Air Station Miramar in San Diego for a routine training exercise when it was reported as &#8220;overdue,&#8221; prompting a search and rescue operation. Authorities with the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department and the Civil Air Patrol found the CH-53E Super Stallion helicopter while searching a snowy mountainous region on Wednesday, The New York Times <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2024/02/08/us/helicopter-crash-5-marines-dead.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reported</a>.
Hours later, the 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing announced that all the Marines on board the helicopter were dead.
&#8220;It is with a heavy heart and profound sadness that I share the loss of five outstanding Marines from 3d Marine Aircraft Wing and the &#8216;Flying Tigers&#8217; while conducting a training flight last night,&#8221; Maj. Gen. Michael J. Borgschulte said in a statement. &#8220;These pilots and crewmembers were serving a calling greater than self and were proud to do so.&#8221;

The U.S. military did not identify the five deceased Marines as policy requires their identities to remain concealed until 24 hours after all next-of-kin have been notified. As of Thursday morning, authorities were still working to recover the Marines&#8217; remains and launch an investigation into what caused the deadly crash.

The crash comes a month after six U.S. Navy crewmembers, who were operating an MH-60R Seahawk helicopter, <a href="https://www.latimes.com/california/story/2024-01-12/crew-rescued-after-navy-helicopter-crashes-into-san-diego-bay" target="_blank" rel="noopener">survived</a> a <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/navy-helicopter-carrying-six-people-crashes-into-san-diego-bay">crash</a> into the San Diego Bay and were rescued off the coast of Coronado by a nearby Navy vessel.

Tatyana Remley was a glamorous would-be-heiress until she attempted to hire a hitman to murder her husband of 12 years, Mark Remley. Now, the beautiful but dangerous woman will spend the next three years and eight months behind bars.
When Tatyana was a young girl, her parents moved the family to Valley Center, California, a small town in San Diego County. Tatyana was in the fourth grade, but her parents didn’t enroll her in school, and for the next 10 years, allegedly kept their daughter from experiencing the world outside her home.
Her own mother, Vera, admitted to Tatyana’s troubled upbringing during a custody battle in 2009 between Tatyana and her first husband, Kenneth Woolcott.
“My husband … wanted to do home school, whatever, once we came to California,” Vera said during the battle, according to documents <a href="https://nypost.com/2023/09/14/tatyana-remley-was-molested-as-child-only-had-4th-grade-education-docs/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reviewed</a> by the New York Post. “We had a lot of difficulties with [Tatyana’s father].”
“If I could go back, I would undo everything, and see to it that she be in school … I’m very sorry, because I believe in school,” Vera added.
In his own deposition, Woolcott, a successful lawyer and businessman, claimed that Tatyana “was kept isolated/captive on rural property in Valley Center, without school, social activities and interaction with her community” and that the religious views of her parents included “the rejection of traditional medicine and medical care professionals.”
“She also was denied access to childhood friends out of the parents’ fear any such friends would lead to discovery of her captivity,” Woolcott added. “Essentially, Tatyana was captive for about 10 years (9 – 20 years old) with little, if any, contact with the outside world, education, social interaction or structure.”
Woolcott also said he helped get Tatyana her GED so she could work, but she refused to get a job.
Woolcott was 43 when he married Tatyana, who was only 23 at the time. Tatyana gave birth to a son, but the couple divorced 11 months after their wedding. The custody battle lasted nearly a decade before a judge determined Woolcott was more fit to care for the couple’s son, the Post reported.
During that decade, Tatyana gave birth to a daughter and had several failed engagements. Her former friends <a href="https://nypost.com/2023/09/08/sex-crazed-tatyana-remley-targeted-rich-men-at-polo-club-sources/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">told</a> the Post that Tatyana sought out “rich men” who could give her a life of luxury.
She met Mark Remley in a Starbucks in March 2011 and began working together on what would become an epic failure: Valitar.

Tatyana described Valitar as “Cirque du Soleil with horses,” to a reporter in 2012, The San Diego Union-Tribune <a href="https://www.sandiegouniontribune.com/sdut-horse-opera-decline-fall-valitar-2013jan19-story.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reported</a> at the time. The show was to rival Cavalia, which included horses and acrobatics and was created by a founder of Cirque du Soleil, according to Erik Martonovich, a former Cavalia cast member hired to direct Valitar.
“They had no clue what they were doing — about anything,” he told the Union-Tribune about the Remleys. “They weren’t horse people and they weren’t show people.”
Ads for the show featured Tatyana prominently, but she had little riding experience and wasn’t really part of the actual show.
“She didn’t do any of the stunts,” Roza Tabasa, the hospitality manager for the show who saw some of its performances, told the outlet. “But in the end, when the whole cast lined up and everybody is applauding, this blonde lady comes down the center, the other cast members part for her — and there’s silence. People are thinking, ‘Who’s she? Oh, it’s the lady in the poster.’”

The Remleys seemed to throw money around haphazardly, spending lavishly on salaries and equipment but then refusing to spend $1,500 to save a horse’s life. On another occasion, Tatyana reportedly went on a shopping spree at a tack shop and purchased items the show already had.
Weeks before the show’s opening performance, the Remleys stopped sending checks to vendors and employees, the Union-Tribune reported. Martonovich was fired after a horse broke its leg during practice, but he believes other factors led to his firing.
“I’m pretty sure at that point, it was about Tatyana. She didn’t want me around because I didn’t want her,” he told the outlet.
After Martonovich was fired, about 18 of the 25 performers quit, and the show could no longer use acts that Martonovich and his production company owned. Former Cavalia performer Sylvia Zerbini was hired to completely rewrite the show – in two months.
When Valitar opened, reviews found it underwhelming when compared to Cavalia. The first weekend failed to sell out seats, and only ran for five days before filing for bankruptcy.
Mark and Tatyana, however, reconciled their marriage and remained together for another decade, continuing their passion for money, horses, drugs, and orgies, the Post <a href="https://nypost.com/2023/09/13/inside-the-twisted-marriage-of-tatyana-remley-equestrian-accused-of-murder-plot/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reported</a>. The couple separated and reconciled multiple times during that period, NBC San Diego <a href="https://www.nbcsandiego.com/news/local/north-county-woman-behind-failed-horse-themed-show-sentenced-in-murder-for-hire-attempt/3391158/">reported</a>.
The final separation came in early 2023, when Tatyana filed for divorce and accused Mark of abuse, including claims that he pointed a gun at her head and chased her with a knife. She also claimed that he watched as one of his friends raped her. Mark has denied all accusations.
Tatyana also demanded $15,000 a month in spousal support to keep up her lavish lifestyle, the Daily Mail <a href="https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-12917783/equestrian-Tatyana-Remley-sentenced-hitman-husband-mark-remley.html">reported</a>.
In the summer of 2023, Mark learned that Tatyana had offered a mutual friend $2 million to murder him, the Post <a href="https://nypost.com/2023/09/06/tatyana-remley-said-she-was-raped-by-pal-of-husband-she-tried-to-kill/">reported</a>. He told police and undercover detectives conducted a sting operation to catch her in the act. She was arrested on August 2 and charged with trying to hire a hitman to kill her husband.
In late December, Tatyana pleaded guilty to solicitation to commit murder and was sentenced to three years and eight months in prison, NBC reported.
