Actor Sam Elliott has issued a public apology for saying some &#8220;things that hurt people&#8221; after he slammed &#8220;The Power of the Dog&#8221; as a &#8220;piece of s***&#8221; over its homosexual themes.
&#8220;I told the WTF podcaster [Marc Maron] that I thought Jane Campion was a brilliant director, and I want to apologize to the cast of The Power of the Dog, brilliant actors all,&#8221; the <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/piece-of-s-iconic-western-star-sam-elliott-rips-oscar-bound-western-the-power-of-the-dog-for-homosexual-themes">77-year-old actor</a> shared during his appearance Sunday at the Deadline&#8217;s Contenders TV event, <a href="https://deadline.com/2022/04/sam-elliott-apology-the-power-of-the-dog-comments-1234999185/">reported</a> the outlet.
&#8220;And in particular Benedict Cumberbatch,&#8221; he added regarding one of the stars of the film. &#8220;I can only say that I&#8217;m sorry, and I am. I am. I wasn&#8217;t very articulate about it.&#8221;
&#8220;I didn&#8217;t articulate it very well,&#8221; Elliott continued. &#8220;And I said some things that hurt people and I feel terrible about that. The gay community has been incredible to me my entire career. And I mean my entire career, from before I got started in this town. Friends on every level and every job description up until today. I&#8217;m sorry I hurt any of those friends and someone that I loved. And anyone else by the words that I used.&#8221;

&#8220;Power of the Dog&#8221; director Jane Campion fired back at actor Sam Elliott over comments he made about the film, which has racked up an <a href="https://www.imdb.com/title/tt10293406/awards/">impressive number</a> of Academy Award and Golden Globe nominations.
Campion was asked outside the Directors Guild Awards what she thought of Elliott, who had <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/piece-of-s-iconic-western-star-sam-elliott-rips-oscar-bound-western-the-power-of-the-dog-for-homosexual-themes">criticized the film</a> over what he said were homosexual themes — and Campion herself, saying that he had previously enjoyed her work but that she had no business directing a western.

‘A Little Bit Of A B-*-*-*-*’: Director Jane Campion Slams Sam Elliott Over His Complaints About Her Western Film

Sam Elliot is beloved for his decades-long, highly respected acting career, most recently on the hit Western drama “1883.” However, his review of the Oscar-nominated film “The Power of the Dog” has some fans very upset. They claim that Elliot’s take on the narrative was “homophobic” and totally off base.
Meanwhile, “Power of the Dog” star Benedict Cumberbatch voiced his own reaction to Elliot’s criticism. To hear him tell it, Elliot <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/sam-elliott-critics-forgot-how-he-enjoyed-quintessential-gay-cowboy-movie-brokeback-mountain-calling-it-a-beautiful-film">hated the movie</a> at least in part due to a culture of “toxic masculinity.”
The drama started during an episode of Marc Maron’s “WTF” podcast when Elliot slammed “Power of the Dog,” saying it wasn’t a true Western in the classical sense. 
“You want to talk about that piece of s***?” the “1883” star told Maron. “That’s what all these f***ing cowboys in that movie looked like. They’re all running around in chaps and no shirts, there’s all these allusions to homosexuality throughout the f***ing movie.”
In response, Cumberbatch shared his rebuttal of Elliott’s criticism. 
“I think if we are to teach our sons to be feminists, if we’re to teach equality, if we’re to understand what poisons the well in men, [and] what creates toxic masculinity, we need to understand and look under the hood of characters like Phil Burbank to see what their struggle is and why that’s there in the first place because otherwise it will just keep repeating itself,” he said while <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wj7q_xPoPaI">speaking</a> with BAFTA head of programs Mariayah Kaderbhai.
Cumberbatch didn’t refer to Elliot directly by name, but rather alluded to the controversy in his criticism. He said that take on the movie was “very odd” and that Elliot appeared to have a problem “that anybody could have any other than a heteronormative existence because of what they do for a living or where they’re born.”
“I think the more we look under the hood of toxic masculinity and try to discover the root causes of it, the bigger the chance we have of dealing with it when it arises with our children in playgrounds at school, with their friends, in the behavioral patterns we might see in innocent play and just understand how to police that,” Cumberbatch continued. 
Maron responded to Elliot’s criticism saying that homosexual themes were the “point” of the movie, a take which the film’s director had already clarified. Jane Campion <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/film/2022/mar/04/jane-campion-on-the-power-of-the-dog-too-much-leather-and-ropes-and-chaps-i-encouraged-it">told</a> The Guardian she intentionally played up those elements to fit the intended theme.
“Too much leather and ropes and chaps? I encouraged it,” Campion told the publication in an interview published March 4.
“It’s quite eroticized. That rope, man! That’s such an object. You’re making a rope out of the hides of the beasts that you grow on the ranch. It’s sort of like a proof of masculinity because you use it to get animals into submission,” she continued.

Detractors would love to believe that actor Sam Elliott is a raging homophobe following his <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/piece-of-s-iconic-western-star-sam-elliott-rips-oscar-bound-western-the-power-of-the-dog-for-homosexual-themes">epic rant </a>on Marc Maron’s “WTF Podcast.” The actor received a lot of criticism for eviscerating the Oscar-nominated Western film, “The Power of the Dog,” calling the movie a “piece of s***.”
Elliott specifically mentioned during his rant that themes of classic masculinity that used to be prevalent in Westerns are all but gone now. Critics, however, are saying the 77-year-old actor is just a big homophobe who felt uncomfortable with the homosexual themes present in “The Power of the Dog.” 
In the past, Elliott was perfectly fine with another movie that included a same-sex couple in the storyline. Some supporters are pointing out the actor’s review of the cult classic movie “Brokeback Mountain” starring Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal. 
“I didn’t really get what all the to-do was about. It is a beautiful film and I was thrilled for Ang [Lee], but it isn’t a Western,” Elliott said of the movie during a 2006 <a href="https://www.scottholleran.com/writings/interviews/interview-sam-elliott-2006/">interview</a> with writer Scott Holleran.
“For one thing, it’s about a couple of sheepherders, not cattlemen. The whole homosexual thing was interesting—they stepped over the line—but [my wife] Katharine and I both looked at it and thought, ‘what’s the big deal?’”
When asked if it “denigrated” cowboys, Elliott replied: “I do not think it’s anti-cowboy. I have tremendous respect for Ang as a filmmaker.”
Meanwhile, Elliott’s rant on “WTF” seemed more focused on the general state of masculinity in culture than it does on homosexual movie themes, even though he did touch on that topic as well. 
After complaining that “The Power of the Dog” director Jane Campion doesn’t know anything about the American West, Elliott said: “The myth is that there were these macho men out there with the cattle? I just came from Texas where I was hanging out with families — not men — but families. Big, long, extended, multiple-generation families that made their living and their lives were all about being cowboys. And, boy, when I f***ing saw that, I thought, ‘What the f***? Where are we in this world today?’”
Hollywood veteran Elliott, who has been nominated for an Academy Award, two Golden Globe Awards, two Primetime Emmy Awards, and two Screen Actors Guild Awards, said his opinions of “The Power of the Dog” ran deep.
He told Maron, “I take it personal. I take it f***ing personal, pal.”
The interview has set off a wave of criticisms, mostly directed at the actor for being “homophobic, misogynistic, and xenophobic,” to name a few. 
“Just in! Sam Elliott reinforces the whole message of the film in accidental endorsement of Power of the Dog,” one person <a href="https://nypost.com/2022/03/01/sam-elliot-slams-piece-of-s-t-power-of-the-dog-for-promoting-gay-themes/">wrote</a> on Twitter. “Which is that cowboy culture hasn’t changed one bit and is still rife with toxic masculinity/homophobia.”
