MSNBC took a wave of backlash after it aired an interview with former Stormy Daniels attorney <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/msnbc-interviews-convicted-felon-michael-avenatti-from-prison-about-trump-trial" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Michael Avenatti</a> — who had to take the call from the prison where he&#8217;s serving time — after hosts and employees made it clear that former RNC Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel would not be an acceptable addition to the network.
Host Ari Melber interviewed the disgraced attorney, who was sentenced in late 2022 to <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/breaking-michael-avenatti-sentenced-to-14-years-in-prison-for-financial-crimes" target="_blank" rel="noopener">serve 14 years</a> for wire-fraud and obstruction, about the potential outcome of the hush-money case against former President Donald Trump. &#8220;I think [Trump] will be convicted,&#8221; Avenatti said.

Critics were quick to note that MSNBC, where employees and hosts banded together to shut down NBC News&#8217; plan to hire McDaniel as a commentator, didn&#8217;t appear to believe that inviting a convicted felon to comment — from prison, no less — was an issue.

<a href="https://www.dailywire.com/author/ronna-mcdaniel" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Ronna McDaniel</a>, the former head of the Republican National Committee, is considering taking legal action after she was ousted from a contributor slot on NBC News.
McDaniel has met with Bryan Freedman, a popular attorney among disaffected and ousted cable news stars looking to take legal action against their old employers, according to <a href="https://www.politico.com/news/2024/03/27/ronna-mcdaniel-nbc-contract-00149274" target="_blank" rel="noopener">POLITICO</a>. Freedman’s resume includes representing Megyn Kelly against NBC, Tucker Carlson against Fox News, and Chris Cuomo and Don Lemon against CNN.
McDaniel expects from NBC she will be paid out the full $600,000 that her two-year contract had been worth, but part of McDaniel’s discussion with Freedman was about her options to sue for damages as well. The former RNC head is exploring legal action for defamation and a hostile work environment, according to POLITICO.
NBCUniversal News Group Chair Cesar Conde <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/msnbc-president-recruited-ronna-mcdaniel-before-nbc-booted-former-rnc-head-report" target="_blank" rel="noopener">announced</a> that NBC News and its sister network, MSNBC, were cutting ties with McDaniel on Tuesday after days of internal backlash, some of which played out publicly on the networks themselves. The public backlash began with Chuck Todd, NBC’s chief political analyst and former moderator of “Meet the Press.”
Todd appeared on his old show, now hosted by Kristen Welker, and expressed angst over an interview Welker had conducted with McDaniel. The interview was booked while McDaniel had still been head of the RNC, but took place after she was announced as an NBC contributor.
“You got put into an impossible situation, booking this interview, and then all of a sudden the rug was pulled out from under you, and you find out she’s being paid to show up?” Todd said on Sunday. “It’s unfortunate for this program, but I am glad you did the best that you could.”

After days of hosts on the networks bashing the decision to hire McDaniels on air, Conde sent a memo to employees announcing that McDaniel would not be appearing on either network.
“No organization, particularly a newsroom, can succeed unless it is cohesive and aligned. Over the last few days, it has become clear that this appointment undermines that goal,” Conde wrote. “I want to personally apologize to our team members who felt we let them down. While this was a collective recommendation by some members of our leadership team, I approved it and take full responsibility for it.”

MSNBC President Rashida Jones reportedly recruited Ronna McDaniel to appear on the network before the former head of the Republican National Committee (RNC) was fired amid internal backlash.
NBC announced on Tuesday that McDaniel would no longer appear on the network. The announcement came days after the former RNC head was hired to be a contributor on the network, prompting backlash from NBC News chief political analyst Chuck Todd and others on NBC’s sister network, MSNBC. 
Executives at NBC, seemingly bowing to the pressure, soon severed ties with McDaniel. Many of those executives, including the president of MSNBC, had roles in convincing McDaniel to join the network. Jones met with McDaniel via video call in March and was part of offering McDaniel a better contract to convince her to appear on MSNBC as well as NBC, according to <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2024/03/27/ronna-mcdaniel-nbc-msnbc-contract/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">The Washington Post</a>.
“No organization, particularly a newsroom, can succeed unless it is cohesive and aligned. Over the last few days, it has become clear that this appointment undermines that goal,” NBC Universal News Group Chairman Cesar Conde wrote in a note to staff announcing McDaniel’s exit from the network. “I want to personally apologize to our team members who felt we let them down. While this was a collective recommendation by some members of our leadership team, I approved it and take full responsibility for it.”
Creative Artists Agency (CAA), the group that represented McDaniel during her contract negotiations with the network, reportedly dropped the former RNC head as well, according to <a href="https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/politics-news/nbc-news-ronna-mcdaniel-contributor-1235860170/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">The Hollywood Reporter</a>.
The open revolt against NBC’s decision to hire McDaniel began with Todd, the former host of “Meet the Press,” blasting the network on his former show, now moderated by Kristen Welker. McDaniel’s first appearance on NBC had been an interview with Welker, which was booked before McDaniel’s contract with NBC was announced.

“Our bosses owe you an apology for putting you in this situation,” he added. Others at the network accused McDaniel of threatening democracy over her actions in the 2020 election and criticized her support for former President Donald Trump.
News networks hiring former political officials, operatives, and others is nothing new to the media. George Stephanopoulos, former White House communications director in the Clinton administration, hosts “Good Morning America” on ABC. Kayleigh McEnany, who served Trump as White House press secretary, is now a cohost on Fox News’ “Outnumbered.” Jen Psaki, who previously performed McEnany’s role but for President Joe Biden, hosts a show on MSNBC.

NBC <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/nbc-releases-statement-announcing-ronna-mcdaniel-is-out-just-days-after-hiring" target="_blank" rel="noopener">announced</a> on Tuesday that McDaniel was out after multiple hosts — including Chuck Todd, Joe Scarborough, Mika Brzezinski, and Nicolle Wallace — criticized the network&#8217;s decision to hire the former RNC leader.
“There is no doubt that the last several days have been difficult for the News Group. After listening to the legitimate concerns of many of you, I have decided that Ronna McDaniel will not be an NBC News contributor,” NBC News Chairman Cesar Conde said in a statement. “No organization, particularly a newsroom, can succeed unless it is cohesive and aligned. Over the last few days, it has become clear that this appointment undermines that goal.”
Following the announcement, social media quickly flooded with posts slamming NBC&#8217;s decision.

McDaniel accepted the NBC offer after she stepped down from her role as chair of the RNC following a private meeting in February with Trump, who tapped her to lead the party after his 2016 presidential election victory.

During a &#8220;Meet the Press&#8221; segment on Sunday, Todd — NBC News&#8217; chief political analyst — <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/chuck-todd-blasts-his-own-network-on-air-for-hiring-former-rnc-chair-ronna-mcdaniel" target="_blank" rel="noopener">discussed McDaniel’s hiring</a> with journalist Kristen Welker, who recently sat down with McDaniel for an <a href="https://www.nbcnews.com/meet-the-press/video/ronna-mcdaniel-says-there-was-tension-between-rnc-and-trump-campaign-over-debates-full-interview-207575621720" target="_blank" rel="noopener">interview</a> on the relationship between the Trump campaign and the RNC in the aftermath of the 2020 election.
“Let me deal with the elephant in the room,” Todd said, looking at Welker. “I think our bosses owe you an apology for putting you in this situation because I don’t know what to believe. [McDaniel] is now a paid contributor by NBC News. I have no idea whether any answer she gave to you was because she didn’t want to mess up her contract.”
“She wants us to believe that she was speaking for the RNC when the RNC was paying for her, so she has credibility issues that she still has to deal with,” Todd added. “Is she speaking for herself or is she speaking on behalf of who is paying for her?”
In his critique of NBC, Todd did not mention former RNC Chair Michael Steele, who has worked as a regular MSNBC contributor since 2011. Steele endorsed Joe Biden in his 2020 run against Trump and <a href="https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/politics/elections/2020/08/24/lincoln-project-michael-steele-former-head-rnc-joins-anti-trump-group/5625888002/">joined</a> the anti-Trump Lincoln Project.
In a follow-up post on Tuesday night, Trump continued to berate NBC executives for allowing Todd &#8220;to publicly scold them,&#8221; and said he would&#8217;ve advised McDaniel to go by her maiden name Romney to secure the job at the Left-leaning network. McDaniel is the niece of Sen. Mitt Romney (R-UT).
&#8220;What boss or executive would allow a man or woman, in this case Sleepy Eyes Chuck Todd, who was fired for dismal performance coupled with horrendous television ratings, to publicly SCOLD them as to their weakness &amp; stupidity in hiring Ronna McDaniel[?]&#8221; Trump asked. &#8220;Actually, they should be scolded for hiring &#8216;Sleepy&#8217; for Meet the Fake Press, and keeping him on so long despite his poor performing skills, bad ratings, and bias.&#8221;
&#8220;The sick degenerates over at MSDNC are really running NBC, and there seems nothing Chairman Brian Roberts can do about it. NBC News To Fire Former RNC Chair Ronna McDaniel After On-Air Hosts Revolt: Report

NBC News chief political analyst Chuck Todd slammed his network during a Sunday broadcast of &#8220;Meet the Press&#8221; after NBC hired former Republican National Committee Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel as a paid contributor.
Todd discussed McDaniel&#8217;s hiring with journalist Kristen Welker, who recently sat down with McDaniel for an <a href="https://www.nbcnews.com/meet-the-press/video/ronna-mcdaniel-says-there-was-tension-between-rnc-and-trump-campaign-over-debates-full-interview-207575621720" target="_blank" rel="noopener">interview</a> on the relationship between the Trump campaign and the RNC in the aftermath of the 2020 election. McDaniel stepped down from her role as chair of the RNC following a private meeting in February with former President Donald Trump, who tapped her to lead the party after his 2016 presidential election victory.
“Let me deal with the elephant in the room,&#8221; Todd said, looking at Welker. &#8220;I think our bosses owe you an apology for putting you in this situation because I don’t know what to believe. [McDaniel] is now a paid contributor by NBC News. I have no idea whether any answer she gave to you was because she didn’t want to mess up her contract.&#8221;
&#8220;She wants us to believe that she was speaking for the RNC when the RNC was paying for her, so she has credibility issues that she still has to deal with,&#8221; Todd added. &#8220;Is she speaking for herself or is she speaking on behalf of who is paying for her?”
Todd went on to say that he believes many NBC journalists &#8220;are uncomfortable&#8221; with McDaniel&#8217;s hiring &#8220;because many of our professional dealings with the RNC over the last six years have been met with gaslighting, have been met with character assassination.&#8221;
&#8220;When NBC made the decision to give her NBC News&#8217; credibility, you have to ask yourself, &#8216;What does she bring NBC News?'&#8221;
Todd added that there&#8217;s an argument to be made for the network bringing McDaniel on to get more access to the Republican Party.
&#8220;If you told me we were hiring her as a technical adviser to the Republican convention, I think that would be certainly defensible,&#8221; he said.
In his critique of NBC, Todd did not mention former RNC Chair Michael Steele, who has worked as a regular MSNBC contributor since 2011. Steele endorsed Joe Biden in his 2020 run against Trump and <a href="https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/politics/elections/2020/08/24/lincoln-project-michael-steele-former-head-rnc-joins-anti-trump-group/5625888002/">joined</a> the anti-Trump Lincoln Project.

McDaniel officially announced her resignation weeks before the RNC <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/michael-whatley-lara-trump-elected-to-lead-rnc" target="_blank" rel="noopener">elected</a> Michael Whatley as chair and Trump&#8217;s daughter-in-law Lara Trump as co-chair of the party.
“President Trump deserves to have the team he wants in place at the RNC,” McDaniel said.
“I will do everything possible to re-elect President Trump in November,” she added. “And I ask all of you out there who worked so hard during this primary season or supported another candidate, that you come in and join me in supporting our president as well.”
Todd was ripped for his comments on &#8220;Meet the Press&#8221; as many conservatives pointed out that many who are employed by NBC News, including Todd, previously worked for Democrats.

Former President Donald Trump’s hold on the Republican National Committee (RNC) was further secured on Friday as his picks for the party&#8217;s leadership positions were unanimously elected.
The RNC voted on the chair and co-chair positions during its leadership meetings in Houston weeks after Ronna McDaniel announced she would be stepping down from RNC chairwoman. Shortly after <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/ronna-mcdaniel-to-step-down-at-rnc-after-trump-calls-for-removal-report" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reports</a> of McDaniel’s departure began swirling following Trump&#8217;s request that she step down, the former president endorsed Michael Whatley for chair and his daughter-in-law Lara Trump for co-chair, and both were elected by unanimous voice vote.

McDaniel was picked by Trump to chair the RNC following his 2016 election victory. Criticism over McDaniel’s leadership began mounting following the Republican Party’s disappointing results across the country in the 2022 midterm elections.
Whatley, the chair of the North Carolina GOP, spoke to those gathered after becoming the new RNC chair and pointed ahead to the 2024 election.
“In less than eight months, we are going to determine the fate of not only the United States but of the entire world,” he <a href="https://www.c-span.org/video/?533963-1/republican-national-committee-elects-leadership" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a>. “And this body, the RNC, is going to be the vanguard of a movement that will work tirelessly, every single day to elect our nominee Donald J. Whatley has served as the Republican state party leader in North Carolina since 2019 and also serves as general counsel for the RNC. Whatley formerly served in the George W. Bush administration and as chief of staff for former Sen. Elizabeth Dole (R-NC). He also advised the 2000 Bush-Cheney campaign and the Trump-Pence transition team.

In remarks following her election to co-chair, Lara Trump — the wife of Trump’s son Eric — stressed the importance of fundraising and held up a $100,000 check that she said the RNC had just received.
“We are going to make sure that every single penny of every dollar goes towards one goal, which is winning,” she said.
Last month, Lara Trump <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/lara-trump-republican-voters-absolutely-interested-in-rnc-paying-trumps-legal-bills" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a> that GOP voters are “absolutely” interested in using RNC funds to help pay for her father-in-law’s mounting legal bills.
“That’s why you’ve seen a GoFundMe get started … people are furious right now and they see the attacks against him,” she said. “They feel like it’s an attack, not just on Donald Trump, but on this country … So I think that is a big interest to people. Absolutely.”

The Republican National Committee (RNC) named former President Donald Trump the presumptive GOP nominee for president on Wednesday.
The RNC put out a <a href="https://gop.com/press-release/rnc-statement-congratulating-president-donald-trump-on-becoming-the-presumptive-nominee/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">statement</a> calling Trump the winner of the primary shortly after former U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley suspended her presidential campaign on Wednesday morning. Haley bowed out after a string of Super Tuesday losses that saw Trump make big gains in the delegate count ahead of the Republican convention.
“Congratulations to President Donald J. Trump on his huge primary victory! I’d also like to congratulate Nikki Haley for running a hard-fought campaign and becoming the first woman to win a Republican presidential primary contest,” RNC chairwoman Ronna McDaniel said in a statement.
“President Trump once delivered a booming economy, secure border, energy independence, and America’s strength on the world stage, the exact opposite of the chaos created by Joe Biden,” she added. “Republican voters have spoken loud and clear with historically large margins and we are more united than ever to beat Biden and Democrats up and down the ballot in November.”
McDaniel has headed the RNC since 2017 and enjoyed support from Trump in that position until recently. Under <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2024/02/06/us/politics/trump-ronna-mcdaniel-rnc.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">pressure</a> from the former president, <a href="https://www.npr.org/2024/02/26/1233867070/rnc-chair-ronna-mcdaniel-resigns" target="_blank" rel="noopener">the chairwoman announced</a> last week that she plans to step down this month. She is expected to leave her post on Friday, March 8.
McDaniel elicited anger from other members of her party when, in January, she urged Republicans to &#8220;unite&#8221; around Trump while other contenders were still vying for the GOP nomination.
Trump’s sweep of Super Tuesday states broke in Vermont, where Haley won the contest by roughly 4 points. It was Haley’s second primary victory of the cycle after she won in Washington, D.C., over the weekend.
Haley declined to speak after her lone Super Tuesday victory. Instead, her campaign released a statement touting Haley’s victory as a woman and warning of a “large block of Republican primary voters who are expressing deep concerns about Donald Trump.” Haley appeared on Wednesday morning to officially suspend her campaign. She did not endorse Trump.
Trump put out a <a href="https://truthsocial.com/@realDonaldTrump/posts/112049357098381588" target="_blank" rel="noopener">statement</a> on his social media platform, Truth Social, claiming victory over Haley on Super Tuesday and inviting her supporters to back him.

RNC Chair Ronna Romney McDaniel, who has served in her position for seven years and come under fire from some Republican critics for the party’s defeats in recent years, will resign from her position on March 8.
McDaniel was picked by former President Trump to run the RNC after he was elected in 2016. After Republicans&#8217; disappointing performance throughout the country in the November 2022 midterm elections, RNC members were <a href="https://www.politico.com/news/2022/12/18/mcdaniel-rnc-chair-campaign-00074503" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reportedly inundated</a> with emails demanding a change in party leadership.
Tacitly acknowledging that Trump will be the 2024 GOP presidential nominee, McDaniel <a href="https://abcnews.go.com/Politics/ronna-mcdaniel-resign-republican-national-committee-chair-days/story?id=107534379" target="_blank" rel="noopener">stated</a>, “The RNC has historically undergone change once we have a nominee and it has always been my intention to honor that tradition. I remain committed to winning back the White House and electing Republicans up and down the ballot in November.”
“It has been the honor and privilege of my life to serve the Republican National Committee for seven years as Chairwoman to elect Republicans and grow our Party,” McDaniel continued. “Some of my proudest accomplishments include firing Nancy Pelosi, winning the popular vote in 2022, creating an Election Integrity Department, building the committee’s first small dollar grassroots donor program, strengthening our state parties through our Growing Republican Organizations to Win program, expanding the Party through minority outreach at our community centers, and launching Bank Your Vote to get Republicans to commit to voting early.”
Earlier this month, Trump endorsed North Carolina GOP Chair and RNC general counsel Michael Whatley to succeed McDaniel while also endorsing his daughter-in-law, Lara Trump, to replace current RNC co-chair Drew McKissick. On Saturday, after handily winning the South Carolina primary, Trump said of Whatley that it “looks to me like he&#8217;s going to be going on to the national Republican party. &#8230; That&#8217;s my kind of guy. He had hundreds of lawyers … to make sure they didn&#8217;t cheat and they didn&#8217;t cheat in North Carolina(in 2020.)”
Last week, Lara Trump insisted that Republican Party voters were &#8220;absolutely&#8221; interested in the Republican National Committee (RNC) paying Trump’s legal bills. According to <a href="https://abcnews.go.com/Politics/trump-warns-living-hell-now-biden-team-attacks/story?id=107523090" target="_blank" rel="noopener">ABC News</a>, draft resolutions reportedly sponsored by RNC member Henry Barbour of Mississippi have been circulated to members of the Republican National Committee members that would bar the RNC from covering Trump’s legal fees.

When she was asked on Saturday whom she would endorse as chair of the RNC, Trump’s remaining challenger, former UN Ambassador Nikki Haley, said bluntly, “It wouldn&#8217;t be a family member of a candidate. &#8230; I would hope that the people in the RNC know that they have the responsibility to put in people in the RNC who are going to look out in the best interest of all of the Republican Party, not just one person.”

Former President Donald Trump on Monday endorsed three people to run the Republican National Committee (RNC) following <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/ronna-mcdaniel-to-step-down-at-rnc-after-trump-calls-for-removal-report" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reports</a> of the current chairwoman, <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/author/ronna-mcdaniel" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Ronna McDaniel</a>, leaving the post after the GOP South Carolina presidential primary, set for February 24.
Trump said he&#8217;d like to see McDaniel&#8217;s position replaced by Michael Whatley, the North Carolina GOP chairman. As for co-chair, the former president said his daughter-in-law, Laura Trump, would be the best fit. Lastly, Trump picked former Marine and political consultant Chris LaCivita to assume the role of COO. LaCivita currently serves as Trump&#8217;s campaign co-manager.
&#8220;The RNC MUST be a good partner in the Presidential election. It must do the work we expect from the national Party and do it flawlessly,&#8221; Trump said in a statement sent to The Daily Wire. &#8220;That means helping to ensure fair and transparent elections across the country, getting out the vote everywhere – even in parts of the country where it won’t be easy – and working with my campaign, as the Republican presumptive nominee for President, to win this election and MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!&#8221;
Pitching Whatley, Trump said the GOP leader has been with him &#8220;from the beginning, has done a great job in his home state of North Carolina, and is committed to election integrity, which we must have to keep fraud out of our election so it can’t be stolen.&#8221;
&#8220;My very talented daughter-in-law, Lara Trump, has agreed to run as the RNC Co-Chair,&#8221; the statement continued. &#8220;Lara is an extremely talented communicator and is dedicated to all that MAGA stands for. She has told me she wants to accept this challenge and would be GREAT!&#8221;

Trump&#8217;s statement added that LaCivita should &#8220;manage the RNC’s day-to-day operations so it will become a fighting machine for 2024 and use all the tools available to win for the American people.&#8221;
Following calls for McDaniel to be removed as RNC head, Trump met with McDaniel at Mar-a-Lago, <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/ronna-mcdaniel-to-step-down-at-rnc-after-trump-calls-for-removal-report" target="_blank" rel="noopener">The Daily Wire</a> reported. He then posted online, “Ronna is now Head of the RNC, and I’ll be making a decision the day after the South Carolina Primary as to my recommendations for RNC Growth.”

Republican National Committee Chairwoman <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/author/ronna-mcdaniel" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Ronna McDaniel</a> has reportedly told former President Donald Trump that she will be stepping down from her position shortly after the GOP South Carolina presidential primary later this month.
The New York Times <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2024/02/06/us/politics/ronna-mcdaniel-rnc-trump.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reported</a> that Trump is &#8220;likely&#8221; to promote North Carolina Republican Party Chairman Michael Whatley to be her replacement.
The news comes after Trump met with McDaniel on Monday at Mar-a-Lago and posted after their meeting: “Ronna is now Head of the RNC, and I’ll be making a decision the day after the South Carolina Primary as to my recommendations for RNC Growth.”

A spokesperson for McDaniel said in a statement, “Nothing has changed. This will be decided after South Carolina.”
The news about McDaniel comes after she has faced mounting criticism for months over the way the Republican Party has underperformed in recent elections. The pressure on her increased even further after the RNC posted its worst fundraising numbers in a decade.
When asked during an interview with Maria Bartiromo over the weekend how he thought McDaniel was doing, Trump responded: “I think she did great when she ran Michigan for me. I think she did OK initially in the RNC.”
“I would say, right now, there will probably be some changes made,” he added.
During a Monday interview on Newsmax, Trump was asked if he thought McDaniel should step down from her position.
&#8220;Well, I think she knows that,&#8221; Trump responded. &#8220;I think she understands that.&#8221;
