While Americans lit up their skies on July 4 to celebrate independence from the British Parliament, many UK politicians wept upon realizing their own newfound independence — having lost their seats in the most disastrous election for Conservatives in decades.
Rishi Sunak’s famous gamble — calling an early election despite trailing in the polls — did not pay off. Fourteen years of what many regard as Tory failures on key issues could not be solved with a few weeks of campaign propaganda.

While inaction on illegal immigration played a central role in garnering frustrations among the base, social conservatives expressed bitter regret about a so-called “Conservative” government which has presided over a “woke” march through the institutions, a cultural war on the meaning of “woman,” a shut down on free speech, and some of the most poisonous, ideological school curriculums we’ve ever seen. With a new rival, Reform, offering a Right-wing alternative on the political stage, the Tories hemorrhaged votes from disappointed conservatives, splitting the Right of the political spectrum and handing victory to the Labour Party.
The post-match analysis has been muddled. <a href="https://www.miriamcates.org.uk/news/rebuilding-our-party#:~:text=The%20future%20for%20the%20Party,to%20win%20back%20our%20base." target="_blank" rel="noopener">Some</a> Conservatives have understood the need to roll back on “woke” and return to genuine conservative principles. Many others insist the solution is to become even more liberally milquetoast. 
Former Energy Minister <a href="https://www.telegraph.co.uk/politics/2024/06/17/general-election-latest-news-sunak-starmer-farage-reform/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Lord Callanan</a> has pushed for “a liberal, mainstream, centre-right Conservative Party that’s socially liberal but economically conservative.” 
Former MP <a href="https://x.com/RoryStewartUK/status/1808082855559323983" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Rory Stewart</a> joined the chorus with an urgent party appeal to “move back to the center” and “reject the fantasies of the Faragist Right.” The best way to win back your losses, is of course, to insult and shun them. 
The schism of the British Right exposes a more universal friction in conservatism. Those who stand unified on economic approach — a low-tax, limited-interference government — are splintered into “conservative” and “progressive” camps on the social issues that hit society hardest. 
For social conservatives, strong family units and community structures enhance human flourishing. Social progressives, on the other hand — forming a new, “Godless” Right — abhor the “outdated” notion of a nuclear family, instead preferring to champion individual freedoms. In the UK, where the progressive side of the Tories has reigned, the government took a hammer to the societal institutions which have historically done the most to serve the vulnerable. The cost hasn’t only been mounting socially but economically too.

<h4>The Church</h4>
Historically, Christianity was responsible for hospitals, schools, and care for the poor. Even in modern times, where so much of this ground has been ceded to the State, the Church still offers a healing balm to our nation’s pandemic of loneliness. 1 in 3 UK <a href="https://www.ons.gov.uk/peoplepopulationandcommunity/birthsdeathsandmarriages/families/bulletins/familiesandhouseholds/2023" target="_blank" rel="noopener">households</a> are now single-occupant. Over half of those over50 experience <a href="https://www.telegraph.co.uk/health-fitness/wellbeing/mental-health/midlife-loneliness-over-50/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">loneliness</a> most of or all the time. Religious communities have so much to offer an atomized and purposeless generation. Yet the government has undermined Christianity time and again. The Tories dismissed the right to worship during the pandemic by keeping church doors closed for longer than necessary. And they installed a series of public order laws which demonized and criminalized Christian expression — including, famously, <a href="https://x.com/MrWinMarshall/status/1605985657997795328" target="_blank" rel="noopener">praying</a> in the privacy of one’s own mind. 
<h4>Marriage</h4>
Take another foundational social institution: marriage. According to the U.K.’s Office for National Statistics, getting married makes people happier with their lives than earning big salaries does, and married people report higher life satisfaction than singles or cohabiting couples. Children who live with married parents report better mental health. Fathers in the home are one of the strongest safeguards against adolescent poverty and crime. Women who are married are significantly less likely to be the victims of violent crime. Men who are married are less likely to perpetrate violent crimes.
Yet the past two decades of rule by social progressives has pulled the family structure apart. Nothing has been done to stall or reverse the plummeting marriage rate, with the tax system offering almost no benefit to those who wed. On the contrary, no-fault divorce was introduced under Tory rule. 
<h4>Parenthood</h4>
Parenthood has suffered too. While our birth rate plummets — now just 50% of what it was in the 1960s — the progressives have only worsened the decline, with maternity policies limited to pushing women back into the workplace as soon as possible after birth, rather than supporting and honoring mothers’ work in raising their children. Half of women now don’t have children before the age of 30 — some out of choice, yet many because today’s social circumstances simply don’t allow for it.
<h4>Mental Health</h4>
As marriage, faith and family crumble in neglect, the results are tragic. We are a nation battling the greatest mental health crisis in recorded history. More than <a href="https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2510371/Britains-130-000-absent-dads-One-fathers-lose-contact-children-earlier-relationships.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">130,000</a> British dads have no contact at all with their children, fueling poorer mental health among our next generation, and feeding into a growing gang culture. Our welfare structures groan under the weight of an aging population with no family around them. <a href="https://www.independent.co.uk/life-style/die-alone-lonely-death-b2573819.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Last year</a>, 9,000 people were found at least a week after they’d died alone.
Where the Church and family support has been destroyed, the state has had to expand. The London School of Economics <a href="https://www.lse.ac.uk/News/Latest-news-from-LSE/2022/c-Mar-22/Mental-health-problems-cost-UK-economy-at-least-118-billion-a-year-new-research" target="_blank" rel="noopener">estimates</a> that our mental health crisis cost the UK economy at least £118 billion a year. 1 in 5 GP <a href="https://www.lbc.co.uk/news/one-in-five-gp-appointments-non-medical/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">appointments</a> are now taken up by people who are lonely, or are seeking life advice. As crime soars due to fatherlessness, state-funded social workers, police officers, prison services and more are in high demand. The list goes on.
Attempting to appeal to progressive fads has seen the Tories compromise on basic principles throughout their recent time in power. The social arguments against “woke” have not been enough to persuade them otherwise. But the economic arguments are stark — and so are the latest election results. 
Now is the time to get back to basics. A Conservative party which supports faith, family and community has a future. A country which lacks these structures does not.

In a blowout victory, Great Britain’s Labour Party ousted the Conservative Party from power after a 14-year run. Labour Party leader Keir Starmer has been officially named Britain’s prime minister. The only time in the nation’s history a party won more votes came in 1997, when Tony Blair&#8217;s Labour Party won 418 seats.
The Labour Party won 412 seats, adding a massive 214 seats to its previous total, while the Conservatives won a paltry 121 seats, plunging a whopping 251 seats. The centrist Liberal Democrats picked up 71 seats, adding 63 to their previous total, while Nigel Farage’s Reform U.K. party picked up four seats.
“Labour’s win was also fragile,” CNN <a href="https://www.cnn.com/2024/07/04/uk/uk-election-exit-poll-results-labour-conservative-starmer-gbr-intl/index.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">noted</a>. “The vote breakdown made clear that the election was as much, if not more, about the public’s anger towards the Conservatives as it was about excitement for Labour’s offer.”
Former Prime Minister Rishi Sunak of the Conservative Party <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/politics/article/2024/jul/05/rishi-sunak-to-resign-as-tory-leader-as-well-as-pm-after-election-defeat" target="_blank" rel="noopener">apologized</a> after the results were made public, saying, “To the country I would like to say first and foremost, I am sorry. I have given this job my all, but you have sent a clear signal that the government of the United Kingdom must change. And yours is the only judgment that matters. I have heard your anger, your disappointment, and I take responsibility for this loss.”
Conservative Party leader Suella Braverman, whom Sunak fired last year as Home Secretary last year but won re-election to Parliament, <a href="https://www.firstpost.com/world/uk-general-election-results-suella-braverman-13789631.html">stated</a>, “I am sorry that my party didn’t listen to you. The Conservative Party has let you down. You &#8211; the Great British people voted for us over 14 years and we did not keep our promises. We’ve acted as if we’re entitled to your vote regardless of what we did, regardless of what we didn’t do, despite promising time after time that we would do those things and we need to learn our lesson because if we don’t, bad as tonight has been for my party, we’ll have many worse nights to come.”
Braverman was fired by Sunak after she wrote a <a href="https://www.thetimes.co.uk/article/pro-palestine-protest-london-met-police-cbqnxbtv3" target="_blank" rel="noopener">piece in The Times</a> that called the pro-Palestinian demonstrators in London “hate marchers” and condemned police for their “double standard” in protecting leftwing protesters. She pointed out that Britons “pride ourselves on our long-established traditions of freedom of expression. These liberties consist not only of freedom of speech but also freedom of assembly. The right to protest in public is a cornerstone of democracy. That is why peaceful marches are never banned and even controversial and disruptive ones are policed rather than blocked.”
Noting that in exceptional circumstances a chief constable can ask the home secretary to ban a march, Braverman, who was born in London and whose family is of Indian origin, continued:

These issues have come into sharp focus because of what happened on October 7: the worst massacre of Jews since the Nazi era. The ramifications of that terrible event and all that has followed have been felt on the streets of the UK. There have been dignified vigils in London held by Britain’s Jewish community, but that is not what has tested our capacity to maintain public order.

She then turned to the “pro-Palestinian movement,” writing that the tens of thousands of angry demonstrators marching through London every weekend had attacked police, stopped train services and mobbed poppy sellers raising funds for veterans.
Speaking of the march planned for Armistice Day, she wrote:

Here we reach the heart of the matter. I do not believe that these marches are merely a cry for help for Gaza. They are an assertion of primacy by certain groups — particularly Islamists — of the kind we are more used to seeing in Northern Ireland. Also disturbingly reminiscent of Ulster are the reports that some of Saturday’s march group organisers have links to terrorist groups, including Hamas.

“There is a perception that senior police officers play favorites when it comes to protesters,” she commented. “During Covid, why was it that lockdown objectors were given no quarter by public order police yet Black Lives Matters demonstrators were enabled, allowed to break rules and even greeted with officers taking the knee?”

<a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/china" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Chinese</a> hackers gained access to personal data about thousands of British soldiers, sailors, and air force members, <a href="https://news.sky.com/story/china-hacked-ministry-of-defence-sky-news-learns-13130757" target="_blank" rel="noopener">according</a> to a new report.
The data breach exposed the bank details of up to 272,000 soldiers and veterans, including some home addresses, <a href="https://apnews.com/article/uk-defense-ministry-data-breach-china-49899b429f138bb2075d9fd6703ac7b0" target="_blank" rel="noopener">through</a> a hack of a third-party payroll system, the Associated Press reported. The British government confirmed on Tuesday that the Ministry of Defense had been hacked by a “malign” actor, but did not specifically name China. However, Sky News <a href="https://news.sky.com/story/china-hacked-ministry-of-defence-sky-news-learns-13130757" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reported</a> on Monday that the hacking had been instigated by China.
British Prime Minister <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/rishi-sunak" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Rishi Sunak</a> said Tuesday that a &#8220;malign actor has compromised the armed forces payment network,” before turning to directly criticizing China.
&#8220;I set out a very robust policy towards China, which means that we need to take the powers which we have done to protect ourselves against the risk that China and other countries pose to us,&#8221; he <a href="https://news.sky.com/story/china-calls-accusations-it-hacked-mod-completely-fabricated-and-malicious-slanders-13130985" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a>. &#8220;They are a country with fundamentally different values to ours that are acting in a way that is more authoritarian and assertive abroad.&#8221;
During a briefing on the hack on Tuesday, U.K. Defense Secretary Grant Shapps said that “state involvement” could not be ruled out, but said that he couldn’t reveal more information about who the government suspected to be behind the hack.
“For reasons of national security, we can’t release further details of the suspected cyber activity behind this incident,” he said, adding that once the hack was discovered, the system was immediately taken offline.
Conservative Member of Parliament Tobias Ellwood <a href="https://news.sky.com/story/china-hacked-ministry-of-defence-sky-news-learns-13130757" target="_blank" rel="noopener">told</a> Sky News that the hack may have been an effort to compromise soldiers struggling financially. He said China &#8220;was probably looking at the financially vulnerable with a view that they may be coerced in exchange for cash.&#8221;

The Chinese Embassy in London <a href="http://gb.china-embassy.gov.cn/eng/PressandMedia/Spokepersons/202405/t20240507_11300683.htm" target="_blank" rel="noopener">responded</a> by asserting that any claims of Chinese government involvement are false.
“The said accusation made by the UK side is nothing but a fabricated and malicious slander. It is extremely absurd and despicable. We strongly condemn it,” the embassy said. “China has all along been fighting cyberattacks according to law. We firmly oppose any groundless accusations against China out of political motives. We urge the UK side to stop spreading disinformation, and stop such self-staged political farces.”

Iran, the world&#8217;s leading state sponsor of terrorism, launched its anticipated attack against Israel, saying it was a response to Israel killing a top Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps commander in Damascus earlier this month. British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak <a href="https://www.gov.uk/government/news/pm-statement-on-iranian-regimes-reckless-attack-against-israel" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a>, &#8220;I condemn in the strongest terms the Iranian regime’s reckless attack against Israel. These strikes risk inflaming tensions and destabilising the region. Iran has once again demonstrated that it is intent on sowing chaos in its own backyard.&#8221;

The European Union also condemned Iran&#8217;s attack, calling it &#8220;an unprecedented escalation and a grave threat to regional security.&#8221;

Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL), Vice Chairman of the Select Committee on Intelligence, warned on Thursday that the situation in the Middle East could soon become the most dangerous it&#8217;s been in more than 50 years as tensions between Israel and Iran have reached a fever pitch.
Rubio&#8217;s comments come as Iran has threatened to launch an attack against Israel after an Israeli airstrike <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/major-escalation-alleged-israeli-airstrike-kills-top-iranian-general-in-syria" target="_blank" rel="noopener">killed</a> Mohammed Reza Zahedi, the top commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps’s Quds Force in Lebanon and Syria, last week as he met with other Iranian commanders and leaders from the Palestinian Islamic Jihad terrorist group.
Zahedi allegedly played a “strategic role in forming and strengthening the resistance front as well as in planning and executing” Hamas’ October 7 terrorist attack against Israel, according to a staunchly pro-IRGC political group.
&#8220;Iran wants to launch a large scale attack from their own territory against Israel,&#8221; Rubio <a href="https://twitter.com/marcorubio/status/1778400321523306774">posted</a> on X. &#8220;Israel will respond instantly with an even more severe counterattack inside of Iran.&#8221;
&#8220;What happens next is the most dangerous Middle East moment since 1973,&#8221; the senator added.

U.S. officials have said that Iran, the world&#8217;s leading state sponsor of terrorism, was planning a &#8220;significant&#8221; attack against Israel.
Israeli media reported on Thursday that Iran was ready to strike but appeared to have delayed or changed its plans in response to threats from the U.S.
British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak echoed the U.S.&#8217;s support for Israel on Thursday, <a href="https://www.israelnationalnews.com/news/388332">saying</a>: &#8220;The threats from Iran are completely unacceptable and we, like the Americans, fully support Israel’s right to defend itself against that.&#8221;
&#8220;We have already highlighted Iran as a significant risk to regional security and we have always said that we will support Israel’s ability to defend itself and we are taking action ourselves to make sure we can protect the UK against threats from Iran,&#8221; he added.

After instances where members of the U.K. Parliament have been harassed and intimidated by anti-Israel activists, British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak <a href="https://www.reuters.com/world/uk/mob-rule-replacing-democracy-britain-warns-pm-sunak-2024-02-28/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">told</a> police chiefs he wants an “immediate response&#8221; to protests at the homes of members of Parliament (MPs).&#8221;
“There is a growing consensus that mob rule is replacing democratic rule. And we’ve got to collectively, all of us, change that urgently,” Sunak said on Wednesday. “We simply cannot allow this pattern of increasingly violent and intimidatory behavior which is, as far as anyone can see, intended to shout down free debate and stop elected representatives doing their job. That is simply undemocratic.”
“I am going to do whatever it requires to protect our democracy and our values that we all hold dear,” he <a href="https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-politics-68429902" target="_blank" rel="noopener">continued</a>. “That is what the public expect. It is fundamental to our democratic system. And also it is vital for maintaining public confidence in the police.”
Sunak also said that the police should take a “consistent and robust approach &#8230; to protect our democratic processes from intimidation, disruption, from subversion.”
On Tuesday, the British Home Office announced a $39 million package to be implemented for protecting MPs.
More than 10 MPs, all of whom said they wanted to remain anonymous, told <a href="https://www.reuters.com/world/uk/after-threats-abuse-british-lawmakers-question-their-safety-over-gaza-2024-02-28/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Reuters</a> that abuse directed at them since the October 7 Hamas massacre of more than 1,200 Israelis had grown more intense. One of the MPs said the abuse prompted them to not seek another term in Parliament.

An MP from the Labour Party said that after he was accused of being a “genocide enabler” and having “blood on your hands” in a town in his constituency, he now tries to sit near the door on public transportation. “It feels like it could just need one spark to flip from someone giving you tuppence (criticism) in the street to escalating to actual violence,” he said. He revealed police told him to install a partition at his constituency or voting district office in order to prevent someone from masking a sudden attack. He said a huge email campaign had been launched to target MPs.
Conservative MP Mike Freer, who had defended Israel, decided to step down from Parliament after a series of incidents targeting him.
One MP said, “I have had conversations with two colleagues about wearing stab vests to meetings. This is a very recent development.”

After she wrote a <a href="https://www.thetimes.co.uk/article/pro-palestine-protest-london-met-police-cbqnxbtv3" target="_blank" rel="noopener">piece in The Times</a> that called the pro-Palestinian demonstrators  in London “hate marchers” and condemned police for their “double standard” in protecting leftwing protesters, British Home Secretary Suella Braverman was fired by Prime Minister Rishi Sunak on Monday.

Braverman’s piece, published in The Times on Wednesday, November 8, was titled, “Police must be even-handed with protests.”
In the piece, Braverman began by pointing out that Britons “pride ourselves on our long-established traditions of freedom of expression. These liberties consist not only of freedom of speech but also freedom of assembly. The right to protest in public is a cornerstone of democracy. That is why peaceful marches are never banned and even controversial and disruptive ones are policed rather than blocked.”
Noting that in exceptional circumstances a chief constable can ask the home secretary to ban a march, Braverman, who was born in London and whose family is of Indian origin, continued:

These issues have come into sharp focus because of what happened on October 7: the worst massacre of Jews since the Nazi era. The ramifications of that terrible event and all that has followed have been felt on the streets of the UK. There have been dignified vigils in London held by Britain’s Jewish community, but that is not what has tested our capacity to maintain public order.

She then turned to the “pro-Palestinian movement,” writing that the tens of thousands of angry demonstrators marching through London every weekend had attacked police, stopped train services and mobbed poppy sellers raising funds for veterans.
Speaking of the march planned for Armistice Day, she wrote:

Here we reach the heart of the matter. I do not believe that these marches are merely a cry for help for Gaza. They are an assertion of primacy by certain groups — particularly Islamists — of the kind we are more used to seeing in Northern Ireland. Also disturbingly reminiscent of Ulster are the reports that some of Saturday’s march group organisers have links to terrorist groups, including Hamas.

“There is a perception that senior police officers play favorites when it comes to protesters,” she commented. “During Covid, why was it that lockdown objectors were given no quarter by public order police yet Black Lives Matters demonstrators were enabled, allowed to break rules and even greeted with officers taking the knee?&#8221;
She continued: &#8220;Right-wing and nationalist protesters who engage in aggression are rightly met with a stern response yet pro-Palestinian mobs displaying almost identical behavior are largely ignored, even when clearly breaking the law? I have spoken to serving and former police officers who have noted this double standard.”
After the news broke that she had been asked to leave the government, Braverman <a href="https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-12742795/David-Cameron-Cabinet-Shock-return-ex-PM-Rishi-Sunak-takes-biggest-gamble-political-life-makes-predecessor-Foreign-Secretary-sacking-Suella-Braverman-extraordinary-reshuffle-trolling-Tory-right.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">stated</a>, “It has been the greatest privilege of my life to serve as Home Secretary.
