Governor Gavin Newsom (D-CA) tried to attack Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth for taking a moment to enjoy the annual Congressional baseball game, claiming that he&#8217;d left National Guard troops and U.S. Marines deployed in California without access to basic necessities.
Newsom was responding to a photo, posted by the @DODRapidResponse account, that showed Hegseth taking in the Wednesday evening game with family. &#8220;America&#8217;s @SecDef. America&#8217;s favorite pastime,&#8221; the caption read.

Newsom replied with one of the same photos he&#8217;d shared earlier in the week — when he&#8217;d claimed that President Donald Trump and Hegseth had deployed troops to California without ensuring that their basic needs were met — and argued further that the National Guard and Marines &#8220;weren&#8217;t needed&#8221; in the first place.
&#8220;Pete sent 4,700 troops here (when they weren’t needed) without adequate fuel, food, water or a place to sleep. But don’t worry, he’s at a baseball game,&#8221; Newsom posted.

The @DODRapidResponse account responded with a photo from the riots that rocked Los Angeles for two days before Trump ordered the California National Guard to provide assistance to local law enforcement. In the photo, a man could be seen waving a Mexican flag, surrounded by smoke from the cars that were being burned in the streets. Accompanying the photo was a two-word caption, mockingly quoting Newsom&#8217;s claim that the troops &#8220;weren&#8217;t needed.&#8221;

Protests and riots had erupted in the Los Angeles area beginning nearly a week prior, when demonstrators attempted to disrupt Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents as they conducted operations. In the days that followed, rioters destroyed property, looted stores, and attacked local law enforcement officers and federal agents. Blaming Newsom and Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass, also a Democrat, for failing to protect people, Trump ordered first the National Guard and then a number of active duty Marines to rein in the situation.

When riots broke out in Los Angeles in response to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) raids, the police response was hamstrung by politics, according to one California sheriff.
Riverside County Sheriff Chad Bianco says the violence and destruction that erupted in Los Angeles over the weekend would never have happened in his county.
&#8220;We know how to stop these,&#8221; Bianco said in an interview with The Daily Wire.
&#8220;I&#8217;m not going to criticize other law enforcement leaders, but it was not handled correctly,&#8221; he said. &#8220;I do not believe that the leaders of law enforcement were not impacted by politics because I know they know how to end this. I know they know how to make it go away, and it was not done.&#8221;
Violent protesters have spent the past five days causing chaos in Los Angeles, assaulting law enforcement, destroying property, and setting cars on fire as they attempt to prevent ICE agents from doing their jobs and arresting criminal illegal aliens.
&#8220;I will tell you this, that would never happen in Riverside County because there would never be a mayor standing in front of a news camera blaming law enforcement for anything or encouraging people to come down and protest while riots were happening while the police chief is standing right next to her. That would never, ever happen here,&#8221; Bianco said. &#8220;This is happening in Los Angeles County and possibly other places because it&#8217;s political. It&#8217;s because of the people making the decisions.&#8221;
In 2020, Bianco was able to get Black Lives Matter riots under control quickly in Riverside, he said.
&#8220;They should have done the exact same thing this time, but instead they fell back into the same political black hole that Los Angeles always falls into, and they don&#8217;t prosecute, they don&#8217;t arrest, and they just allow this to happen,&#8221; he said.
Bianco is running as a Republican in California&#8217;s gubernatorial election next year, aiming to oust liberal Governor Gavin Newsom. He blamed Newsom and Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass for the riots, saying they should not go on television and &#8220;spew political rhetoric.&#8221;
During a Wednesday press conference, Bass <a href="https://www.foxnews.com/politics/la-mayor-bass-rips-trump-claims-city-part-national-experiment-test-federal-power-amid-anti-ice-riots" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a> the riots were &#8220;provoked by the White House&#8221; and suggested Los Angeles is &#8220;part of a national experiment to determine how far the federal government can go.&#8221;
&#8220;You know what they should be doing? Both of them should be sitting on their couch watching their TV from the safety of their own home,&#8221; Bianco said. &#8220;All they are doing is making it worse, and they&#8217;re purposely doing it.&#8221;
&#8220;They do not like law enforcement,&#8221; Bianco said. &#8220;They enjoy criminal behavior because it creates an environment they can politically take control of and act like they&#8217;re the heroes for saving us, when the reality is they created it.&#8221;
&#8220;They prevented law enforcement from doing anything, it gets completely out of hand, and then they jump up and down and say, oh, now we&#8217;re going to arrest all these bad actors and this needs to stop,&#8221; he said. &#8220;They should have done that four days ago, five days ago, and neither one of them did because they make this 100% political. They use it for a political tool, and it&#8217;s an absolute disgrace.&#8221;
&#8220;Get out of the way of their chiefs of police and their sheriff&#8217;s offices and let them maintain peace. That is what we do. We are the experts doing it,&#8221; the sheriff said.
Bianco emphasized that when rioters are allowed to film themselves destroying property and post it on social media for &#8220;likes and clicks&#8221; with no consequences, it encourages more bad actors to go to that area.
&#8220;If you are going to enable criminal activity, it&#8217;s just going to grow and grow and grow, and we watched that happen for the first three days, four days of these riots and nothing was happening. There was no arrests,&#8221; he said. &#8220;There was no consequence for any of these people.&#8221;
Often, the sheriff said, he has to send his own officers to Los Angeles when riots there go south. Bianco is already responsible for the safety of 2.4 million people in Riverside County, the 10th largest county in the country, which sits just east of Los Angeles.
&#8220;I&#8217;m not happy. I mean, I will always do it. I have to protect law enforcement. I have to help protect Los Angeles County, but we should have done this five days ago, not yesterday,&#8221; Bianco said.
Bianco also told The Daily Wire he&#8217;s heard cops on the line express frustration that their hands are tied during riots.
&#8220;The vast majority of the cops that are on the line want to end the rioting,&#8221; Bianco said. &#8220;They want to arrest the people that are throwing things at them. They want to arrest the people that are trying to hurt them, vandalize property, start fires, and do all those things.&#8221;
However, until officers get the word from leadership, they &#8220;just have to sit there and be the victims of assaults with a deadly weapon,&#8221; the sheriff said.
The solution, Bianco said, is an &#8220;overwhelming show of force from law enforcement and a zero tolerance for criminal activity, and then you can truly have a legitimate protest instead of what we have currently, which is just riots.&#8221;
&#8220;When the leaders prevent it strictly for politics, which that&#8217;s all this is, then it creates a bad environment with very, very low morale when leaders don&#8217;t stick up for their troops,&#8221; the sheriff said.
Bianco also noted that while police chiefs can be &#8220;fired at any moment if they don&#8217;t do what the politicians say,&#8221; California sheriffs are elected.
&#8220;There is not one politician that could affect how I handled my riots,&#8221; he said.
President Donald Trump deployed 4,000 National Guardsmen and 700 Marines to Los Angeles to help local law enforcement get the situation under control. The troops are being used to secure streets and perimeters in areas where ICE is carrying out enforcement actions, <a href="https://www.nbclosangeles.com/news/local/national-guard-troops-protecting-ice-agents/3720717/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">according</a> to U.S. officials.
Democrats were apoplectic at the announcement that approximately 700 Marines were headed to Los Angeles, and Newsom filed an emergency motion to block what he called an “unlawful militarization” of the city.
&#8220;They know that the National Guard and the Marines will never be used against citizens. It is against the law,&#8221; Bianco said. &#8220;All of these ignorant politicians and disingenuous politicians that are trying to make the general public think that the military is being used against citizens is disgusting because it is an absolute, flat-out lie.&#8221;
&#8220;They blamed everything on the president who tried to come in and save everybody after,&#8221; he said. &#8220;They want us to forget the timeline.&#8221;

Jimmy Kimmel insisted earlier this week that there was “no riot” in Los Angeles, and claimed President Donald Trump was “mentally ill” for deploying troops to quell anti-ICE protests.

&#8220;You won’t see this elsewhere on television. Not only is it not an apocalypse, they’re having a Disney/Pixar movie premiere for ‘Elio,’ a movie about aliens. Don’t tell Trump — he’ll send in the Green Berets, too,&#8221; Kimmel told his audience. &#8220;But I just want to say, thank God for President Trump and the heroes at ICE for protecting us from these bloodthirsty fruit stand vendors spreading their dangerous pineapple chunks and mangos with a squirt of lime all over the city.&#8221;
The comedian whined that illegal immigrants should be allowed to stay in the country because most of them haven’t committed any crimes beyond the first one: entering the country illegally. 
&#8220;People who have lived here their whole lives, people who have been in this city longer than I have, the vast majority of whom have never done anything wrong, are being abducted, which is the correct word to use, by agents in masks, hiding their identities, grabbing people off the street and at work, sending people to detention centers,&#8221; he claimed.
Despite Kimmel’s assertions, there have been many videos circulating on social media documenting the violence in real time. This includes police vehicles being vandalized and set on fire, major roadways being shut down by angry mobs, small businesses being looted and burned, and other targeted attacks against law enforcement as residents protest the ICE raids.
Still, Kimmel said he supports the protests.
&#8220;Los Angelenos gathered to demonstrate and, with very few exceptions, peacefully demonstrate to voice their opposition to this disgusting and unnecessary abuse of power instigated by our mentally ill president, who is dead-set on exacerbating this, who actually wants conflict, who is intentionally inflaming and lying to make it seem like there’s a war going on,&#8221; Kimmel added.
&#8220;There’s no riot outside,&#8221; he added. &#8220;We have more so-called ‘unrest’ here when one of our teams wins a championship.&#8221;
Kimmel isn’t the only one in denial. Earlier in the week, California Democratic Rep. Nanette Díaz Barragán <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/la-descends-into-chaos-as-mexican-rioters-wage-war-on-america">appeared on CNN</a> to declare that the Los Angeles riots are “mostly peaceful” as footage of burning cars showed on the screen in the background.

We have all seen the images this past week. They have become a far too common sight in America’s largest cities: cars ablaze, small businesses looted and vandalized, city centers held hostage by violent mobs, all while local law enforcement stands idly by.
President Trump took decisive action to protect the public from lawless rioters by activating the National Guard, but many of the rioters continue to engage in blatant criminality, correctly guessing they face only a remote risk of prosecution. Congress and state legislatures, however, can step in by making it ruinously expensive to riot.
For decades, the federal government has used private litigation as a tool to further public policy objectives. Disabled Americans can sue businesses for violations of the Americans with Disabilities Act. Consumers who suffer even the most trivial losses from deceptive advertising can bring class actions against manufacturers. Litigation is expensive, often ruinously so, and the government therefore outsources much of its law enforcement to private citizens, armed with statutes that award attorneys’ fees and civil penalties.
Rioting is first and foremost a criminal matter, and local police departments and district attorneys should quell riots through vigorous, evenhanded enforcement of criminal law. But they do not. Congress should thus fill this void by creating a private right of action, that is, the ability to bring a lawsuit against individuals who create disruptions in the form of riots.
The first step would be to define a riot, taking care to draw a clear line between criminality and First Amendment activity. Fortunately, the law already makes this distinction: expressing one’s thoughts using signs or chants is legal, but trespassing, assault, and vandalism are not. A riot should therefore be defined as a gathering of two or more people who are present in a location where they lack legal permission to be (whether private property or public property without a required permit) who engage in or aid and abet trespass, assault, and vandalism that results in property damage and obstructed rights of way. If Congress is the body passing the law, it can add a requirement that the riot affects interstate commerce (a very broad and easily satisfied requirement) to ensure the law is upheld.
The second step would be to identify the parties who can bring suit under this law. Riots result in many kinds of harm. Workers are unable to make it to work on time. Business owners contend with shattered windows, stolen inventory, and lost revenue when law-abiding residents stay home. Parents are unable to take their children to school. Police officers are assaulted. The law must recognize each of these harms by allowing anyone who suffers a harm to their person or property to bring suit.
The third step would be to craft a remedy that gives the law teeth. A challenge with enforcing criminal rioting laws is the difficulty of determining precisely which member of a riot committed which act of criminality. Civil law need not be so exacting. A participant in a riot — or those who provided material support to rioters (the deep-pocketed unions and nonprofits who help organize the protests that quickly become riots) — should face civil liability for harm that occurred during the riot. While some victims face tremendous financial harm, like a small business owner whose shop or restaurant is looted, others face smaller, harder-to-quantify harms. Plaintiffs should therefore be able to recover not only their actual damages, but a civil penalty in the tens of thousands of dollars, sufficient to deter rioters. Like almost all civil enforcement statutes, there should be a mandatory award of attorney’s fees to prevailing plaintiffs to ensure that anti-rioting cases are financially viable for attorneys.
The coddling of rioters by state and local authorities has caused tremendous destruction in American cities. In the past five years, we have seen riots ostensibly related to policing, race relations, the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, and, now, the enforcement of immigration laws. As long as rioters know they can act with impunity, the riots will continue. A law that makes funding or participating in riots financially devastating will make many rioters—and those who fund them—think twice before blocking a bridge or smashing a storefront window.

Topline: President Donald Trump announced that the United States has reached a trade deal with China. The news comes amid an uneasy truce after a series of retaliatory tariffs.
Early Wednesday morning, Trump shared on Truth Social that “Our deal with China is done, subject to final approval with President Xi and me.” This followed two days of negotiations between top economic officials from both countries in London. Trump said that the deal, as it stands, would impose 55% tariffs on Chinese goods entering the United States, but just 10% for American goods in China. China has also agreed to resume shipping magnets and rare earth minerals to the United States.
“Rare earths power $7 trillion US dollars of consumer goods every year,” Shaun Rein, the founder of the China Market Research Group, told The Daily Wire. “Without Chinese rare earths, our iPhones aren&#8217;t going to work. Our cars aren&#8217;t going to work. And importantly, our military defense weapons aren&#8217;t going to work. So without Chinese rare earths, America&#8217;s in a lot of trouble. What also people don&#8217;t realize is that about 95% of antibiotics actually [are] manufactured in China. And then all straight down everything you get out of Walgreens or CVS, whether it&#8217;s Advil or Tylenol, a lot of that is made in China.”
China is the second-largest economy in the world and is a major market for many American goods – $143.5 billion of U.S. goods were exported to China in 2024, although American imports of Chinese goods were far higher at $438.9 billion. Tariffs of 55% are comparatively high but much lower than the 145% imposed before the agreement was reached. The deal will allow Chinese students to resume attending American colleges and universities.
Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick said that this agreement would conclude trade negotiations with China and that deals from many other countries are close to locking in their own deals with the United States.
“We’re in good shape with lots of countries, but good shape isn&#8217;t good enough for the United States of America,” Lutnick told <a href="https://x.com/atrupar/status/1932819395077710148">CNBC</a>.”We want great deals that are fundamental to America, we can get them, we can get them done.”
And&#8230; Inflation rose just 0.1% in May compared to April — it’s now sitting at 2.4%, near a four-year low.

<h2>Anti-ICE Riots Spread As Politicians Spar</h2>

Topline: The clash between President Trump and California Democratic Governor Gavin Newsom escalated Wednesday, as anti-ICE riots continued to spread across the country. 
Protests continue to pick up steam nationwide:
<ul>
<li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1">By Wednesday night, Las Vegas, Minneapolis, Philadelphia, and Seattle joined the growing list of cities being hit by demonstrations, many of which turned violent. </li>
<li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1">In Texas, Republican Governor Greg Abbott mobilized the National Guard before protests across the state turned violent, with officers in a number of cities left hospitalized. </li>
<li style="font-weight: 400;" aria-level="1">In Atlanta, hundreds of rioters lobbed fireworks at police and attempted to shut down a highway — authorities responded with tear gas and finally got the crowd under control. </li>

California is still the epicenter of the unrest. Demonstrations continued Wednesday night, as rioters defied curfews and clashed with police. At least one rioter, Emiliano Galvez, has been charged with attempted murder. Galvez, a previously deported Mexican national, allegedly threw a Molotov cocktail at police in Los Angeles County. 
&#8220;Since June 6, there have been 330 illegal aliens that have been arrested as part of these riots in Los Angeles,” White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt <a href="https://x.com/RapidResponse47/status/1932853233954836599">told</a> reporters. “113 of those illegal aliens had prior criminal convictions.&#8221;
Governor Newsom has<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0n77NFjDlBI"> voiced his support</a> for the demonstrations, telling Americans that it was time to “stand up” to President Trump, whom he blamed for provoking the unrest: “Donald Trump without consulting California law enforcement leaders commandeered 2000 of our state’s National Guard members to deploy on our streets illegally and for no reason. This brazen abuse of power by a sitting president inflamed a combustible situation…The founding fathers didn’t live and die to see this moment. It’s time for all of us to stand up.”
These anti-ICE protests aren’t likely to die out anytime soon — organizers are planning “No Kings” demonstrations in cities across the country on Saturday, June 14. That event will coincide with President Trump’s 79th birthday, along with a massive parade in Washington, D.C., to celebrate the Army’s 250th birthday. 
&#8220;We&#8217;re going to be celebrating big on Saturday,” President Trump <a href="https://x.com/RapidResponse47/status/1932480100026511650">said</a>. “And if there&#8217;s any protester that wants to come out, they will be met with very big force… These are people that hate our country. They will be met with very heavy force.”

Topline: As Los Angeles and other cities contain the anti-ICE riots, Democrats, Republicans, and the media battle over shaping the narrative.
Democrats and Republicans on the national stage have made the ongoing unrest a central part of their messaging since ICE raids began in L.A. last week. Democrats have slammed Trump for deploying troops against American citizens and blame his actions for sparking the riots, arguing that the threat of a militarized response escalated tensions on the ground and tracks with a broader pattern of authoritarianism.
Republicans, especially the president, have taken the opposite tack – decrying Democrats for being complicit in the ongoing violence and lawlessness and insisting that Trump&#8217;s quick and decisive deployment of troops was necessary to prevent further destruction.
“What&#8217;s going on looks really bad to the average American,” Mark Hemingway, Senior Writer at RealClearInvestigations, told The Daily Wire. “This is a very different time than 2020. And we went through months of riots in 2020. And I think now Americans have a very good and clear sense that these are not organic riots necessarily, these are not spontaneous.”
Hemingway seemed skeptical of the proposition that a majority of Americans would view the deployment of troops as escalatory.
“I think the American people are broadly sympathetic to Trump,” Hemingway said. “Trump campaigned on mass deportations. His immigration policy is still <a href="https://www.realclearpolling.com/stories/analysis/trumps-immigration-policies-remain-popular-polls">broadly popular</a>. And the idea that Democrats are attaching support of violent riots to that, or trying to make Trump look like the extremist, it&#8217;s just, this is not five years ago…at this point in time, I think the average American would, you know, trust the first 700 Marines in the phone book at 29 Palms over the elected leadership of Los Angeles to do what&#8217;s right for the people of that city.”

Fake Gavin Newsom is leading the “resistance,” and he&#8217;s making dramatic speeches about it.
Newsom, the real-life Ken doll governor of California, has presided over a great exodus from his state. I&#8217;m one of the people who left. I&#8217;m a lifelong Angeleno, lived in LA for virtually my entire life, but then I took myself, my family, my parents, and my company, and we all moved out of LA thanks to the governance of people like Gavin Newsom.
But now, Gavin Newsom believes that he has his road to 2028 paved for him. He is using President Trump&#8217;s unleashing of federal forces to protect ICE agents in doing their job as an excuse to claim that he is now standing up to authoritarianism in the United States of America.
Thus, on Tuesday night, Newsom delivered another one of his very overwrought, ridiculous speeches. I think he thought it was the end of the film “Independence Day” and he was Bill Pullman shouting, “We will not go quietly into the night! We will not vanish without a fight! We&#8217;re going to live on! We&#8217;re going to survive!”
It didn’t go well.
It started with massive audio issues right at the top. You could see he was talking, but nothing came out, which was an improvement because when he talks and sound does come out, it’s usually stupid.
He finally got to his point, which was: We must resist! We must resist federal encroachments!
What are Newsom’s “federal encroachments”? ICE agents were sent to Los Angeles to execute federal immigration raids, to pick up illegal immigrants, and to deport them. That is what federal law says you are supposed to do. It is certainly within the purview of ICE to nab illegal immigrants and then process them for deportation. That is all well within the remit of the federal government.

And then riots began, and President Trump was not willing to wait for Gavin Newsom to allow them to continue to fester. Instead, he activated the National Guard and sent them there in a support role for ICE; he also activated some Marines in a support role for the National Guard.
But according to Gavin Newsom, all of this amounts to an extra-constitutional coup, the beginning of a monarchic America in which Donald Trump is unleashing federal forces in order to take full control of the American body politic.
Newsom almost teared up as he spoke, but one thing is clear: this guy is not Laurence Olivier. He&#8217;s not a good actor.
And so <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pXQQNUeb4Sw">the moment</a> came off as incredibly vague. He wept:

“What he wants most is your fealty and your silence?” I think what President Trump would like is for you leftists to stop burning Waymos.
On Tuesday, a judge did rule against Newsom — who had attempted to stop via an injunctive relief lawsuit what President Trump is trying to do in Los Angeles — saying Trump had the legal capacity to act as he has and Newsom could not block him.
But what Gavin Newsom wants most of all is to run for president in 2028, and the media are helping him out. The Washington Post had an <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2025/06/09/gavin-newsom-trump-los-angeles-protests/">entire piece</a> titled &#8220;Newsom in interview: Trump&#8217;s actions echo authoritarian regimes.&#8221;
The Post quoted Newsom saying, “That’s an American president in 2025, threatening a political opponent who happens to be a sitting governor. That’s not with precedent in modern times. That’s what we see around the globe in authoritarian regimes.”
That&#8217;s because President Trump joked about arresting Newsom, because Tom Homan, Trump’s border czar, had said that if Newsom violates federal law, then he will be subject to federal law just as any other citizen would be.

Democrats tried to imprison President Trump multiple times over the course of the last two years. What&#8217;s good for the goose is good for the gander: if you&#8217;re violating the law, then the law should apply to you.
But there is no ongoing effort to jail Gavin Newsom, despite the fact that he is, in fact, a horrible governor. He has every right to be a horrible governor; he just can&#8217;t violate federal law.
The Post continued:

All the while, he continued suing Trump, while keeping up a cordial back-channel relationship. On Monday, he sounded like he was at his end with Trump, calling him “unrestrained” and “unhinged.”</blockquote>
Newsom said on Monday, “Trump is a very different president than his first foray in office. You’ve seen that as it relates to how he has completely obliterated any oversight from Congress; how he seeks to obliterate oversight from the judicial branch by threatening impeachment of judges and running up to the edge as it relates to court orders.”
This is all about Gavin Newsom running for president in 2028.
He is hoping that if he becomes the face of resistance to Trump, it will propel him to victory in the Democratic primaries.

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt issued a stark warning to any potential protesters who had a mind to engage in the same sort of violence and vandalism that has been seen in Los Angeles over the last several days, saying from the press room podium: &#8220;You will not succeed.&#8221;
Leavitt&#8217;s warning comes after five days of violent protests and riots in Los Angeles, sparked by protesters who were attempting to prevent U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents from doing their jobs and arresting criminal illegal aliens. Los Angeles Police Chief Jim McDonnell admitted that his department was &#8220;overwhelmed&#8221; by left-wing rioters in the city, and sparred with liberal council members urging McDonnell to illegally tip them off to incoming federal immigration raids.
McDonnell <a href="https://x.com/TheChiefNerd/status/1931919309229392192" target="_blank" rel="noopener">acknowledged</a> that his department faced significant risk from the rioters during a press conference on Sunday. “Tonight, we had individuals shooting commercial-grade fireworks at our officers. That can kill you,&#8221; he told reporters. &#8220;We are overwhelmed as far as the number of people out there engaged in this type of activity. &#8230; There is no limit to what they are doing to our officers.&#8221;

Further, on Tuesday, the chief told Los Angeles City Council members that he would absolutely not tip them off to federal raids to deport illegal immigrants.
“You’re asking me to warn you about an enforcement action being taken by another agency before it happens? We can’t do that,” McDonnell responded to Councilmember Imelda Padilla, the Los Angeles Times <a href="https://www.latimes.com/california/story/2025-06-10/l-a-city-councilmembers-spar-with-police-chief-over-immigration-protests">reported</a>.
The chief said such a tip-off would be obstruction of justice, adding, “That would be completely inappropriate and illegal.&#8221;
City Council President Marqueece Harris-Dawson also went after McDonnell, telling him it was wrong to suggest U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) were LAPD “law enforcement partners.”
“If we know somebody is coming here to do warrant-less abductions of the residents of this city, those are not our partners,” Harris-Dawson said. “I don’t care what badge they have on or whose orders they’re under. They’re not our partners.”
Following the meeting, McDonnell emphasized that the LAPD needs to cooperate with the feds on several issues, even if the department doesn&#8217;t on immigration per sanctuary laws.
“All of the crimes we investigate potentially could be in partnership with [federal agencies],” he said. “It is a partnership, and without that partnership, we wouldn’t be able to go into the World Cup, the Olympics &#8230; that require that we work with federal, state and local partners.”
Soon after President Donald Trump was elected in 2024, McDonnell said his department was working with consulate offices for Mexico and other Central American countries to protect illegal immigrants from coming federal deportation raids.
Enforcement of immigration laws would be “undercutting our primary mission, which is to be able to build public trust to work with every member of all of our communities, to be able to have hope that people will come forward if they were a victim of crime, a witness to a crime,” McDonnell <a href="https://spectrumnews1.com/ca/southern-california/politics/2024/12/04/lapd-chief-says-he-will-work-to-protect-immigrants?utm_source=chatgpt.com" target="_blank" rel="noopener">told</a> the Associated Press at the time.
The chief also took heat from liberal council members for using rubber bullets and making dozens of arrests. Councilmember Hugo Soto-Martínez, for example, told McDonnell, &#8220;We have to be mindful of the tactics being used by some LAPD members that is adding to the escalation.”
“Just like a few protesters can take away from the messaging, the same thing can be said about LAPD. It overshadows the response,” he added.
Councilmember Eunisses Hernandez also accused LAPD officers of acting “out of line for the situation.”

Montana Republican Sen. Tim Sheehy, a genuine conservative, offered a common-sense perspective on how to deal with Southern California in the wake of the anti-ICE riots in Los Angeles County, while also defending President Donald Trump’s budget bill from Democrats trying to savage it.
Sheehy, a former Navy SEAL who served in Iraq and Afghanistan, appeared on Fox Business with host Stuart Varney, who played a clip of Los Angeles Democratic Mayor Karen Bass saying “nothing was happening” in the city before ICE arrived last week.
“But these men are convicted murderers, rapists, and they would be on the streets of Los Angeles if they’d not been arrested. I don’t understand the mayor’s position,” Varney prompted.
“Common sense, Stu,” Sheehy replied. “That’s why we won the last election. Americans want a secure border, cheap gas, safe streets, boys are boys, girls are girls, cops are good, criminals are bad. And as we see today, the Democrats still are pushing non-common-sense policies. She’s sitting there telling us everything‘s fine in L.A.; there’s no criminals to be seen. Meanwhile, they’re burning cars, attacking cops, wreaking chaos in the streets. So people want safe streets; they want order in the streets, and that’s what the president’s bringing.”
“Listen, none of us want active-duty troops deployed in the U.S.; of course not, that’s a pillar of our Constitution, but we also need public safety,” he continued. “We need order in the streets, and Americans have every right to feel safe in their own homes.”
“Governor Newsom is going to be begging President Trump for money to fix some of the problems of his own creation in California. Should he get it?” Varney asked.
“It all depends on common sense, Stu,” Sheehy answered. “When it comes to wildfire spending, they want money to recover from wildfires; [we] absolutely want to rebuild those communities, but not if they’re going to follow the same wrong-headed policies. &#8230; And we shouldn’t be funding subsidies for the state of California if they’re not going to enforce laws in their own streets, and the federal government has to come in and do the job in the state, city, and county. Then we shouldn’t be paying for that either. So if they’re going to take care of their own house, we will certainly help them, but we shouldn’t be paying for policies that are bad for America.”
Varney asked if Medicaid waste and fraud was the “sticking issue” as the GOP senators consider President Trump’s budget bill, and if that was what the Democrats were “going to hang their hat on.”
“No, I think the issues are far more wide-ranging than that, Stu; that’s of course, the one that they’re wanting to message on,” Sheehy explained. “The reality is we’ve seen an explosion in Medicare and Medicaid fraud across the board, from improper payments to billions of dollars of payments that they didn’t even know where they went. A 9 to 1 dollar reimbursement ratio for able-bodied males when we’re not even paying the reimbursement ratio needed to cover the cost for pregnant women and people who are severely sick. So we have a system that has been perverted these last four years, and it’s rife with fraud and abuse, and we’re going to fix that. The most important thing is to protect Medicaid, to protect Medicare, for the people that really need it, and that’s exactly what we’re doing by shoring up these programs for the people who actually need it and reducing the fraud , waste, and abuse for those who do not need it.”

Texas Republican Gov. Greg Abbott announced Tuesday night that he would deploy the National Guard &#8220;across the state&#8221; as anti-ICE protests hit major cities.
Protests against President Donald Trump&#8217;s illegal immigration crackdown started earlier this week in <a href="https://www.fox4news.com/news/dallas-joins-anti-ice-protests-immigration-crackdown-intensifies">Dallas</a> and <a href="https://www.kxan.com/news/local/austin/live-blog-ice-protest-at-texas-capitol/">Austin</a>, and more demonstrations are planned for San Antonio on Wednesday and Saturday. In a <a href="https://x.com/GregAbbott_TX/status/1932656855764861152">post</a> on X, Abbott said he was mobilizing the National Guard as a precautionary measure &#8220;to ensure peace &amp; order.&#8221;
&#8220;Peaceful protest is legal. Harming a person or property is illegal &amp; will lead to arrest,&#8221; the governor added. &#8220;@TexasGuard will use every tool &amp; strategy to help law enforcement maintain order.&#8221;
In Austin, the state&#8217;s capital, police used pepper spray and tear gas to disperse a group of protesters who were ignoring warnings to clear out of the street, KXAN Austin <a href="https://www.kxan.com/news/local/austin/live-blog-ice-protest-at-texas-capitol/">reported</a>. Officers with the Texas Department of Public Safety and the Austin Police Department arrested more than a dozen people during the protest Monday night, according to Abbott. During the demonstration, a federal building where Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) holds detainees was vandalized with messages reading, “ICE NEEDS 2 SURRENDER &amp; RELEASE THE HOSTAGES” and “MODERN DAY SLAVERY DISGUISED AS CRIMINAL REFORM.”
Six men arrested during the Austin demonstration were charged with felony criminal mischief, resisting arrest, among other offenses, according to the <a href="https://www.expressnews.com/news/article/abbott-deploys-national-guard-san-antonio-protests-20371032.php">San Antonio Express-News</a>.
&#8220;Peaceful protesting is legal. But once you cross the line, you will be arrested,&#8221; Abbott <a href="https://x.com/GregAbbott_TX/status/1932304416435998771">wrote</a> on social media early Tuesday morning, adding, &#8220;FAFO,&#8221; the acronym for &#8220;F*** Around and Find Out.&#8221;
The protest in Dallas on Monday turned &#8220;tense&#8221; as some demonstrators clashed with police officers, The Dallas Morning News <a href="https://www.dallasnews.com/news/2025/06/09/protestors-in-dallas-rally-to-show-solidarity-with-la-demonstrators-amid-ice-crackdowns/">reported</a>. After sunset, authorities deployed pepper spray to disperse the crowd and appeared to make some arrests.
Texas National Guard troops will be on &#8220;standby in areas where mass demonstrations are planned in case they are needed,&#8221; according to Abbott&#8217;s office. Demonstrations, organized by a group called &#8220;No Kings&#8221; are <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/trump-issues-warning-to-any-protester-that-wants-to-come-out-during-d-c-military-parade">planned</a> for cities in all 50 states on Saturday as the U.S. Army will hold a massive parade in Washington, D.C., coinciding with the president&#8217;s birthday, with Trump in attendance.
Protests, some of which have turned into <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/anti-ice-riots-break-out-in-san-francisco-as-more-troops-deploy-to-l-a">riots</a>, have already popped up in cities across the country after anti-ICE rioters attacked law enforcement officers and damaged businesses and public property in Los Angeles last weekend. President Trump deployed the National Guard to L.A. on Saturday and then sent in <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/trump-sends-another-2000-national-guard-troops-to-l-a">reinforcements</a> days later, including 700 Marines, as he blasted Democrat officials, including California Gov. Gavin Newsom and L.A. Mayor Karen Bass.
California then sued the Trump administration over the National Guard deployment, arguing that Trump infringed on Newsom&#8217;s power. After a week of public feuding, billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk delivered an apology to President Donald Trump via his X platform during the early morning hours Wednesday.
Musk, who recently deleted posts warning that Trump was named in the files relating to the late convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, had mostly broken with Trump over the &#8220;One Big Beautiful Bill&#8221; currently moving through the Senate. He went so far in a number of posts to call for people to vote against anyone in Congress who supported it.
In his Wednesday morning post, however, he voiced regret for how far he’d taken his attacks: “I regret some of my posts about President @realDonaldTrump last week. They went too far.”

Despite being at odds over the budget bill — which Musk said would undo the work he and so many others had done with the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) project to cut the bloat and waste within the federal government — he made it clear that he agreed with Trump on other issues.
On several occasions, he either reposted or commented positively on posts from Trump or his team regarding the administration’s actions to control the rioting in Los Angeles County.

Los Angeles police detained a CNN reporter and his crew on live television Tuesday night as anti-ICE riots continued to roil the city following federal immigration enforcement raids.
CNN correspondent Jason Carroll was captured on live television with his hands behind his back, surrounded by officers in riot gear during Laura Coates&#8217; 11 p.m. broadcast.
&#8220;I&#8217;m being detained, Laura,&#8221; Carroll can be heard saying after police briefly restrained him and his crew, according to a report from the New York Post.
Officers ultimately allowed Carroll to leave, but warned him not to return to the area.
&#8220;We&#8217;re letting you go, but you can&#8217;t come back &#8230; if you come back in, then you go,&#8221; an officer told the reporter.
A CNN spokesperson <a href="https://nypost.com/2025/06/10/media/cnn-reporter-detained-by-lapd-on-tv-covering-anti-ice-protests/">confirmed</a> to the New York Post that the news team was &#8220;briefly detained&#8221; while documenting events as police cleared the area, adding they were &#8220;pleased the situation resolved quickly once the reporting team presented law enforcement with their CNN credentials.&#8221;
The CNN correspondent had just finished his report from the scene of the riot on CNN’s “Laura Coates Live,” when the host noticed the confrontation and went back to the L.A. crew.

“Wait one second, John,” she said, interrupting her panel guest. “Hold on. I wanna – Jason, what’s going on? I hear you. Am I seeing Jason Carroll being – what happened? Jason?”
“I am being detained,” Carroll replied. “I’m being detained, Laura.”
Carroll <a href="https://www.mediaite.com/media/tv/i-am-being-detained-cnn-reporter-narrates-encounter-with-police-during-live-hit/">narrated</a> the encounter while the LAPD escorted him away.

“I’m not being arrested, correct, officers?” he asked.
“Did you hear what he told you?” an officer asked the reporter.
“No,” Carroll replied.
“We’re letting you go, but you can’t come back,” the officer said. “Because then if you come back in, then you go. Ok, please?”
“Ok, thank you, officer,” Carroll replied before attempting to communicate with Coates again.
“If you guys can still hear me, what happened was, I was –” Carroll said before being cut off by an alleged New York Times reporter.
“I’m Chris with The New York Times. We got video of you guys. If you need it later, call The New York Times.”
The Post notes it is still unclear who “Chris” is at this time, and the Times has yet to confirm his role at the paper at the time of publication.
“Thank you, I appreciate that,” Carroll said before going back to Coates.
“So here’s what happened, Laura,” he said. “I was called over, and the officer told me to put my hands behind my back. I said, ‘Am I being arrested?’ He said, ‘You are being detained.’ I was walked out of the area. They took down my information.”
Carroll’s audio suddenly cut out, leading Coates to turn to CNN Chief Law Enforcement Analyst John Miller for analysis.
Miller, the former Deputy Commissioner of Intelligence and Counterterrorism of the NYPD, said police officers have to remain skeptical of “press” credentials when responding to protests because “you have anarchist groups and agitators who show up and say, ‘Well, I have a blog, so therefore I’m press. So therefore, even though I’ve been throwing bottles and screaming epithets, I’m not part of the protest. I want to be treated as media.’ So they sort through people one at a time.”
The Los Angeles anti-ICE protests, which began somewhat peacefully early Saturday after reported raids in the area, <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/tom-homan-says-national-guard-moving-into-la-to-shut-down-anti-ice-riots">deteriorated</a> into more chaotic scenes by late afternoon, leading President Donald Trump to deploy thousands of National Guard troops to the area.
