Days after being endorsed by fellow democratic socialist Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY), Zohran Mamdani is leading former Governor Andrew Cuomo in the Democratic primary for New York City mayor for the first time, according to a poll released on Wednesday.
The <a href="https://www.politico.com/f/?id=00000197-6195-da2a-a9bf-6fbd7abe0000">poll</a>, conducted by Public Policy Polling for Democrat Justin Brannan&#8217;s city comptroller campaign, showed Mamdani leading the primary 35% to Cuomo&#8217;s 31%, within a margin of error of 4.1 percentage points. The survey of 573 likely Democratic voters was conducted on June 6-7, one day after AOC endorsed Mamdani.
The results indicate that the primary has effectively narrowed to a two-person contest between Mamdani and Cuomo, with no other candidates breaking double digits, despite endorsements from a plethora of top New York Democratic officials.
Mamdani, 33, elected to the State Assembly in 2020, has positioned himself as a leftist alternative to Cuomo&#8217;s more moderate brand of Democratic politics, campaigning on free public bus fares, free child care, and city-run grocery stores. The self-described democratic socialist has yet to present any realistic plan to pay for these programs, which would <a href="https://www.politico.com/news/2025/05/27/zohran-mamdani-policy-pitches-new-york-00369756">require</a> roughly $10 billion in funding for an already cash-strapped city.

Cuomo&#8217;s campaign has disputed the poll results, with spokesperson Rich Azzopardi <a href="https://www.politico.com/news/2025/06/11/zohran-mamdani-climbs-to-top-of-poll-leading-andrew-cuomo-00401594">telling</a> POLITICO that their internal polling shows the former governor maintaining &#8220;a consistent double-digit lead for more than three months.&#8221; The Cuomo spokesman complained that &#8220;the only polls showing this trend line are paid for by Zohran Mamdani Inc,&#8221; and, &#8220;It&#8217;s not lost on us that Politico is the only NYC media outlet that continues to take these outlier polls.&#8221;
According to POLITICO, the poll methodology might have slightly favored Mamdani, as 61% of responses came from text messages rather than landlines.
The former governor has recently <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/cuomo-says-hell-spend-eight-years-in-washington-fighting-trump-if-he-wins-nyc-mayors-race?author=Zach+Jewell&amp;category=News&amp;elementPosition=undefined&amp;row=0&amp;rowType=Vertical+List&amp;title=Cuomo+Says+He%E2%80%99ll+Spend+%E2%80%98Eight+Years+In+Washington%E2%80%99+Fighting+Trump+If+He+Wins+NYC+Mayor%E2%80%99s+Race">sharpened</a> his attacks against Mamdani, questioning his &#8220;thin resume&#8221; and ability to lead New York City&#8217;s complex government. Cuomo maintains 42% support among black voters, while Mamdani showed the strongest appeal with white and Asian voters.
Ranked choice voting, which will be used in the Democratic primary in two weeks, was not simulated in the survey. However, a recent Emerson <a href="https://emersoncollegepolling.com/nyc-2025-poll/">poll</a> showed Mamdani performing better in later rounds of ranked choice voting than in early rounds by picking up second-choice votes after other candidates are eliminated, which could indicate an even larger lead than the PPP poll suggests.
In ranked-choice voting, voters rank up to five candidates in order of preference, and if no candidate receives more than 50% of first-choice votes, the last-place candidate is eliminated and their votes are redistributed based on voters&#8217; next choices until someone wins a majority.
Incumbent Mayor Eric Adams, running as an independent this cycle, has been far behind both Mamdani and Cuomo in general election polling, and is reportedly <a href="https://nypost.com/2025/05/30/us-news/eric-adams-quietly-tries-to-rally-nyc-republicans-to-run-on-gop-line-or-back-his-independent-mayoral-bid-as-politicos-grew-fearful-of-socialist-zohran-mamdani/">courting</a> Big Apple Republicans for support. Adams, who made an <a href="https://www.politico.com/news/2025/04/22/adams-and-homan-deepen-partnership-law-enforcement-ice-00305221">alliance</a> with Trump border czar Tom Homan earlier this year, moved to open an ICE office on Rikers Island and cooperated to indict 27 alleged Tren de Aragua members.
Cuomo and Mamdani will face each other again in a debate Thursday night, where Cuomo is expected to continue highlighting Mamdani&#8217;s limited government experience and the fiscal impact of his policy proposals.

Democratic socialist Zohran Mamdani surged to within single digits of disgraced former New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo in the New York City Democratic mayoral primary race, according to newly released polling.
According to a PIX 11/Emerson College poll released earlier this week, Mamdani, a 33-year-old Muslim from Queens who is a state assemblyman, trails Cuomo 54.4% to 45.6% after 10 simulated rounds of ranked-choice voting, a notable improvement from late March when Cuomo was ahead 38% to 10%.
“Cuomo has led in the polls since early 2025, but Mamdani has surged, gaining 23 points and winning second-choice votes nearly 2-to-1, cutting Cuomo’s ranked-choice lead from 12 points to 9 points,” Spencer Kimball, executive director of Emerson College Polling, <a href="https://emersoncollegepolling.com/nyc-2025-poll/">said</a>. &#8220;With four weeks to go, the question is whether Cuomo can run out the clock, or if he needs to win over second-choice voters to hold off Mamdani&#8217;s momentum.”
Cuomo maintained his strong lead in the early rounds of ranked choice voting in the poll, with Mamdani only closing the gap in later rounds.
In ranked-choice voting, voters rank up to five candidates in order of preference, and if no candidate receives more than 50% of first-choice votes, the last-place candidate is eliminated and their votes are redistributed based on voters&#8217; next choices until someone wins a majority.
The ranked-choice voting system appears to be working to Mamdani&#8217;s advantage, as, according to the poll, he continues gaining ground by picking up second-choice votes after other candidates are eliminated.
Per the Emerson report, “35% of voters support former Governor Andrew Cuomo on the first round of the ballot, 23% support State Rep. Zohran Mamdani, 11% support Comptroller Brad Lander, 9% former State Rep. Scott Stringer, 8% City Council Speaker Adrienne Adams, and 5% State Senator Zellnor Myrie.”
“Cuomo’s strongest support comes from black voters (74%), voters over 50 (66%), and women (58% to 42%),” Kimball added. “Mamdani leads among voters under 50 with 61%, and holds an edge among white voters (57% to 43%) and college-educated voters (58% to 42%).”

Cuomo’s campaign maintains that the Emerson poll is an “outlier,” with campaign spokesman Rich Azzopardi <a href="https://www.washingtonexaminer.com/news/campaigns/state/3425895/zohran-mamdani-andrew-cuomo-new-york-city-mayor-race-closes-gap-poll/">telling</a> the Washington Examiner that the ex-governor “is the consistent and overwhelming frontrunner in this race.”
However, Mamdani has effectively formed strategic alliances with other left-wing candidates in an effort to block the 67-year-old former governor&#8217;s political comeback and consolidate his base.
Mamdani called on his supporters to <a href="https://www.cityandstateny.com/politics/2025/05/how-much-did-zohran-mamdanis-call-action-help-adrienne-adams-fundraising/405674/?oref=csny-skybox-lander">contribute</a> to rival progressive Adrienne Adams&#8217; campaign in order to help her qualify for matching public funds in a slight against Cuomo, aiming to pick up second-choice votes after other candidates are eliminated.
In a hypothetical general election matchup, the poll shows Cuomo performs better against Republican nominee Curtis Sliwa, with Cuomo winning 44% support compared to 35% for Mamdani if he were the Democratic nominee. Sliwa is the founder of the Guardian Angels and lost the 2021 mayoral election to current New York Mayor Eric Adams, a registered Democrat running this cycle as an independent, according to Emerson College Polling.
Meanwhile, incumbent Mayor Adams, <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/eric-adams-back-in-nyc-mayor-race-as-an-independent">running</a> as an independent, would receive just 10% support against Cuomo but would climb to 15% against Mamdani.

The Post <a href="https://nypost.com/2025/05/27/us-news/zohran-mamdani-makes-up-ground-in-nyc-mayoral-race-but-still-cant-topple-cuomos-lead-poll/">adds</a> that ranked-choice surveys released by other pollsters, including Mamdani’s own polling released on Tuesday, show Cuomo defeating the democratic socialist by significant margins.
The Emerson poll was conducted with 1,000 registered NYC voters with a margin of error of +/- 3%, and the ranked choice voting simulation included 500 Democrats, excluding undecided voters, with a margin of error of +/- 4.3 percentage points.
The primary election is scheduled for June 24, with early voting beginning June 14.

NYC’s Mayoral Race Takes Sharp Turn, Putting Muslim Socialist Neck-And-Neck With Cuomo

The 2024 election is over, but the hard work of building trust in our elections is just beginning. Conservative states like Florida, Georgia, and Texas have made great strides in the last few years. The laws they passed helped deliver a high turnout, high confidence election. But election integrity faces ongoing challenges both new and old, which is why our conservative states must double down on <a href="https://honestelections.org/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/HEP_2024-Election-Reform-Report_v4.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">robust election reforms in 2025</a>.
One of the most urgent threats to election integrity comes from <a href="https://americansforpublictrust.org/document/apt-report-foreign-backed-spending-in-state-ballot-issue-campaigns/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">foreign interference</a>. While existing laws prohibit foreign nationals from contributing to political candidates, loopholes allow them to fund campaigns to dramatically reshape state constitutions and even rewrite foundational voting laws through ballot initiatives.
This loophole is already being exploited. One left-wing group, the Sixteen Thirty Fund, has so far taken over $240 million from a Swiss billionaire named Hansjorg Wyss, all while dumping roughly $130 million into ballot measure campaigns in 25 states. So long as this loophole exists, foreign activists and even hostile powers like China and Russia have a means to directly influence the DNA of our republic. This year, Ohio passed groundbreaking legislation banning foreign funding of ballot measures. 2025 should be the year that <a href="https://honestelections.org/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/HEP-Foreign-Funding-Model.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">every state follows suit</a>.
It should also be the year that states put an end to ranked-choice voting (RCV). Time and again, RCV has proven to be confusing, time-consuming, and prone to errors. Proponents claim it improves democracy, but in truth, it does the opposite. Voters must rank candidates, so voting takes longer, and the tortuous process of eliminating candidates and redistributing votes can lead to convoluted—and even incorrect—outcomes. In one glaring example, Oakland, California, certified the wrong winner in an RCV election in 2022. This year in <a href="https://www.oregonlive.com/politics/2024/11/portlands-ranked-choice-debut-causes-voter-engagement-to-crater-1-in-5-who-cast-ballots-chose-no-one-for-city-council.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Portland</a>, Oregon, participation plummeted with 20% of voters leaving their ballots entirely blank in the ranked-choice race for city council.
Before the 2024 election, 10 states passed laws <a href="http://stoprcv.com/">banning</a> RCV. Left-wing donors like John and Laura Arnold fought back, <a href="https://www.wsj.com/opinion/ranked-choice-voting-ballot-measures-election-863d52ff" target="_blank" rel="noopener">pouring</a> $100 million into RCV ballot measures in six states. Voters rejected them all, in red and blue states alike, while Missouri voters enshrined an RCV ban in the state constitution. But the cabal behind RCV isn’t stopping. They now <a href="https://subscriber.politicopro.com/newsletter/2024/11/election-reformers-try-to-pick-up-the-pieces-00188355">say</a> they will lobby legislatures to impose what the voters just rejected. The best response from lawmakers would be to ban RCV instead.
That will keep voting simple. Empowering secretaries of state to <a href="https://honestelections.org/wp-content/uploads/2023/08/HEP_Model-Legislation-Procedural-Audit_v3.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">audit election processes</a> will keep them transparent and accountable. Process audits help make sure that election officials follow the law, that equipment functions correction, and ballots are being handled and processed properly. They go beyond merely confirming results; they evaluate every step of an election, identify problems, and help officials implement solutions.
Clean voter rolls are another cornerstone of election integrity. Outdated lists open the door to fraud and errors. States should require that officials check their rolls against databases like the National Change of Address registry, the Social Security Death Index, jury records, and the federal SAVE database to identify and remove people who have died, moved away, or are not citizens. Noncitizens should be barred from registering or voting in any state or local election.
Mail voting also requires tighter safeguards. Organized vote harvesting should be banned, with vote collection limited to caregivers, immediate family members, or officials operating in bipartisan teams. States should ban groups from sending pre-filled and unsolicited voter registration forms, as well as applications to vote by mail. Ballots should only be mailed if a voter specifically asks for one. Voter ID laws should be applied to mail ballots, and states should require that ballots be received by the time polls close on Election Day.
It is also time for states to reevaluate excessively long early voting periods. Voting early can be a valuable tool for increasing participation, but the demand for 30 or 45 days of early voting is driven more by a desire by left-wing groups to ballot harvest than any legitimate need for six weeks of voting. <a href="https://honestelections.org/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/July_2023_HEP-_Polling_Memo.pdf">Polling</a> shows that roughly 80% of the public favors two weeks or less of early voting, with weekend time, ensuring that voting is convenient and sane.
All of these reforms enjoy broad, bipartisan support with the public. No matter what the Left says, laws like these build trust and encourage people to vote. States across the country should make passing these reforms a priority in 2025. After all, no matter what <a href="https://www.foxnews.com/politics/final-harris-rally-oprah-warns-trump-presidency-could-end-voting-rights" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Oprah</a> says, 2024 was not the last election in America. That means the work of building confidence in elections is never over.

Last Tuesday, voters in six states decisively rejected ballot measures that would have brought ranked choice voting to future elections. In Arizona, Colorado, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, and Oregon, RCV <a href="https://ballotpedia.org/Results_for_ranked-choice_voting_(RCV)_and_electoral_system_ballot_measures,_2024" target="_blank" rel="noopener">went down in flames</a>. National groups spent millions on campaigns promising RCV would enhance democracy and empower the people, angling for an election day triumph. Instead, the voters handed them a rout.
Adding insult to injury, Alaska appears on track to repeal RCV after using it for just two years. Missouri, meanwhile, became the first state to ban it at the ballot box, and the eleventh state overall to bar RCV. In fact, the number of states to <a href="https://ballotpedia.org/Ranked-choice_voting_(RCV)" target="_blank" rel="noopener">ban</a> RCV more than doubled this year.
Ranked choice voting, a complex scheme, seems better suited to a laboratory than a voting booth. It eliminates the “one person, one vote” principle and asks voters to rank multiple candidates for each race. If no candidate gets a majority, the one with the fewest votes is eliminated, and their ballots are redistributed to the voter’s next choice. This process repeats until someone claims a majority.
Voting takes longer with RCV. Voters must learn about and rank numerous candidates in multiple contests on each ballot. Counting ballots also takes longer, as final tabulations can’t begin until all ballots are received, and some states allow mail ballots to arrive after Election Day. Some states lack voting systems that can handle this process; Idaho’s secretary of state estimated the cost to replace the state’s <a href="https://idahofreedom.org/a-40-million-drain-on-taxpayers-ranked-choice-voting-comes-at-a-heavy-price-for-idahoans/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">equipment</a> at $40 million.
The results are difficult to audit and just as hard to explain, especially when ranked choice voting catapults candidates who got the second- or third-most votes into office after numerous rounds of elimination. In fact, RCV is so confusing that the wrong winner can be certified. That actually happened in Oakland, California in 2022.
The one thing RCV does reliably is push politics to the left, particularly when this scheme is paired with California-style jungle primaries. That’s the system Alaska uses, and in the special congressional election of 2022, more voters cast ballots for Republicans but Democrat Mary Peltola went to Congress. 
Small wonder, then, that left-wing megadonors decided to push RCV nationwide despite its obvious flaws. They <a href="https://honestelections.org/wp-content/uploads/2024/03/HEP-RCV-Factsheet_v2.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">built up an array</a> of organizations to lobby, petition, and ultimately to campaign for ranked choice voting. Those efforts culminated in ballot measures in six states, <a href="https://ballotpedia.org/Results_for_ranked-choice_voting_(RCV)_and_electoral_system_ballot_measures,_2024" target="_blank" rel="noopener">fueled</a> by an astonishing $99 million, or nearly $30 for every $1 spent in opposition.
Nearly half of that extraordinary sum came from groups tied to liberal billionaire John Arnold and his wife, Laura. The pair <a href="https://www.wsj.com/opinion/ranked-choice-voting-ballot-measures-election-863d52ff" target="_blank" rel="noopener">spent</a> at least $39 million propping up ranked choice voting measures this year alone.
What did these donors get for their millions? Not much. Nearly 70% of Idahoans voted against RCV. Colorado and Oregon, both liberal states, rejected the measures by double-digit margins. And in the presidential battlegrounds of Arizona and Nevada, ranked choice voting went down harder and faster than Kamala Harris.
Meanwhile, nearly 69% of Missourians voted to proactively ban ranked choice voting. In Alaska, the Arnolds and other RCV megadonors poured in almost $15 million to defend the scheme against a repeal effort. Despite that, the repeal vote is winning as ballots continue to come in.
Washington, D.C., was the only bright spot for RCV advocates, where a citywide ballot measure passed by wide margins. That may not be the win proponents imagine. After all, “they use it in the swamp” isn’t much of a rallying cry.

Is this the end of ranked choice voting? It should be. But with the left, there is no such thing as a permanent defeat. In fact, RCV has endured expensive, high-profile failures before—a $10 million <a href="https://ballotpedia.org/Massachusetts_Question_2,_Ranked-Choice_Voting_Initiative_(2020)#Campaign_finance" target="_blank" rel="noopener">loss</a> in Massachusetts in 2020, for instance—only to rebrand the scheme as “instant runoffs” and “open primaries,” and spend 10 times as much this year.
RCV <a href="https://subscriber.politicopro.com/newsletter/2024/11/election-reformers-try-to-pick-up-the-pieces-00188355" target="_blank" rel="noopener">backers</a> are already <a href="https://x.com/NickTroiano/status/1854313594785018148" target="_blank" rel="noopener">promising</a> they will be back, even <a href="https://subscriber.politicopro.com/newsletter/2024/11/election-reformers-try-to-pick-up-the-pieces-00188355" target="_blank" rel="noopener">telegraphing</a> they will focus instead on lobbying state legislatures to impose the scheme that voters just decisively rejected. So much for all their talk about “democracy.” Lawmakers would be wise to head that effort off by <a href="https://stoprcv.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">banning</a> ranked choice voting next year, instead.
Left-wing billionaires spent millions trying to buy a new form of democracy that would cater to their politics and interests. Fortunately, the American people spoke loud and clear: our election system is not for sale.

The Missouri Senate approved a constitutional amendment to ban non-U.S. citizens from voting and also ban ranked-choice voting.

“The amendment provides that only citizens of the United States over the age of 18 who are residents of Missouri and of the political subdivision in which they offer to vote are entitled to vote at all elections,” the bill states. “This amendment specifies that all elections shall be by paper ballot or by any mechanical method prescribed by law. Furthermore, voters shall only be entitled to one vote for each issue on the ballot and the same amount of votes for each office as there are seats to be filled at the election. Under no circumstance shall a voter be permitted to cast a ballot in a manner that results in the ranking of candidates for a particular office.”
“The candidate that receives the greatest number of votes in a political party primary shall be the only candidate for that political party at the general election,&#8221; the bill continues. &#8220;The name of such candidate shall be placed on the official ballot at the general election, unless removed or replaced as provided by law.&#8221;
“Especially at a time when illegal aliens are flooding our country at historic levels, it’s incumbent upon lawmakers to protect the right to vote and ensure that only U.S. citizens decide the outcome of U.S. elections,” former Virginia Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli stated, <a href="https://electiontransparency.org/2024/04/09/missouri-senate-passes-constitutional-amendment-banning-foreign-citizen-voting-ranked-choice-voting-house-must-follow-suit/">according</a> to the Election Transparency Initiative. “All the while, anti-Election Integrity megadonors are financing a nationwide campaign to promote the disastrous Ranked-Choice Voting scheme intended to cement Left-wing power for generations to come—it must always be rejected.”
“Year after year, Missouri has been targeted by the Left in their goal to overthrow elections,” Spencer Bone, the Executive Director of Liberty Alliance USA, stated. “The Left-wing activists pushing both ranked-choice and noncitizen voting want to dismantle the political party system, so Conservatives NEVER have a voice. The passage of SJR 78 is a major step forward in stopping the Left’s mission to overthrow our elections. The Senate has delivered, now it’s time for the House to do the same. It’s time for them to step up, hold the line, and finish the job.&#8221;
