It’s Pride Month, and rainbows gonna rainbow. But the pink, white, and blue <a href="https://www.si.edu/stories/who-designed-transgender-flag">transgender flag</a> is flying higher than ever for Tinseltown’s gender-nonconforming youth.
It seems like literally every celebrity has a trans kid these days. From <a href="https://www.yahoo.com/entertainment/celebrity/articles/ben-afflecks-teen-child-fin-204514757.html">Jennifer Garner and Ben Affleck</a> to <a href="https://people.com/all-about-liev-schreiber-naomi-watts-daughter-kai-11732147">Naomi Watts and Liev Schreiber</a>, <a href="https://people.com/movies/jamie-lee-curtis-and-daughter-ruby-on-journey-coming-out-as-trans/">Jamie Lee Curtis</a>, and <a href="https://www.thepinknews.com/2025/08/26/charlize-therons-kids-jackson-august-daughters/">Charlize Theron</a>, it isn’t hard to find a smiling A-list parent proudly standing by as their child rejects their own God-given body. But is it a symptom of our safe-space era? Or the first raindrops before a torrential storm?
“There has to be some reason why this enormous percentage of Hollywood kids are trans. How many celebrities have trans kids?” <a href="https://middleeasy.com/mma-news/joe-rogan-goes-off-hollywood-celebs-transgender-kids-crazy/">Joe Rogan</a> said. “It’s not a thing that was going on just a few years ago.”
When Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony’s daughter <a href="https://pagesix.com/2026/05/29/celebrity-news/jennifer-lopezs-child-emme-debuts-new-name-at-high-school-graduation-ceremony/">Emme Muñiz</a> came out as “Oskar Muñiz” last month, the subject resurfaced. “They have ADHD,” Lopez told <a href="https://www.instagram.com/reels/DZFr5jnPc79/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Extra</a>, speaking about her twins, Emme (“Oskar”) and Max, who got their father’s unconventional looks. “They’re loving, good-hearted people.” 
The pro-trans campaign among the elite is real and <a href="https://globalphilanthropyproject.org/2026/03/10/fund-our-futures-campaign-update/">well-funded</a>. Just the global sex reassignment surgery market alone is expected to reach nearly <a href="https://finance.yahoo.com/news/trends-strategies-shaping-7-5-153400822.html">$8 billion by 2033</a>. But while the situation remains fluid, the larger discussion is hardly open to alternative perspectives.
“I hope you know that you will find yourself,” trans “Baby Reindeer” actor <a href="https://www.youtube.com/shorts/rW82swvkUks">Nava Mau</a> told &#8220;trans kids&#8221; from the 2024 Emmys red carpet. “You will find your purpose and everything will be alright.”  
Over in politics, Democrat Texas state Rep. James Talarico told “<a href="https://youtu.be/3CligU7twvE?t=2497">A Superbloom Podcast</a>,” “I love … the trans children who showed up yesterday at the state capitol to advocate for their humanity.” 
Softened by the agreeing coos of everyone on set, Marlon Wayans told “<a href="https://www.youtube.com/shorts/fDYdcEkoeUU?t=4&amp;feature=share">IMO with Michelle Obama</a>” of his own child, Kai, “Their transition really taught me what unconditional love was.” Wayans says he came around to “full acceptance” of the trans thing within a week. 
It’s not completely out of bounds to pin a lot of this on the debauched rules of the game in a left-leaning bubble. Rife with stories of <a href="https://variety.com/2017/film/features/casting-couch-hollywood-sexual-harassment-harvey-weinstein-1202589895/">casting couches</a>, <a href="https://www.npr.org/2024/03/16/1238843676/quiet-on-set-nickelodeon">toxic sets</a>, and open secrets about <a href="https://www.rollingstone.com/music/music-news/six-things-you-didnt-know-about-clive-davis-194379/">king-making predators</a> in the C-suite, the celebrity entertainment machine holds onto a blurry status quo. 
“These kids are not our accessories. They’re little human beings that need structure,” Sylvester Stallone’s wife Jennifer Flavin told <a href="https://youtu.be/TPV_ArqT6j8?t=896">Katie Miller</a>. Having left California for <a href="https://people.com/sylvester-stallone-jennifer-flavin-palm-beach-florida-home-see-inside-11790540">Palm Beach</a>, Florida, in 2024, Flavin detailed the challenge of raising the couple’s three (tomboy) daughters in the belly of the beast. “Growing up in a Hollywood home, there’s really no structure … you’ve got private planes, you’ve got all these giant homes with chefs and secretaries and assistants and housekeepers or nannies, and there’s just too much of everything.” 
If we’re just living in a trendy popularity contest, it’s almost impossible to nail down why this epidemic is surging among the jet-set. Energetic headlines praise well-known parents for publicly supporting their trans-identifying kids. As <a href="https://www.buzzfeed.com/ellendurney/celeb-parents-with-trans-and-nonbinary-kids">BuzzFeed</a> claims, “It really is that easy to love your kids unconditionally!” 
Voices that challenge the narrative are quickly taken out with society’s trash. See Mario Lopez’s apology tour after mentioning in an interview that age three was too young to decide that a child is trans. &#8220;It&#8217;s sort of alarming,” <a href="https://abcnews.com/GMA/Culture/mario-lopez-apologizes-ignorant-insensitive-comments-trans-children/story?id=64690975">he said</a>. “And my gosh, I just think about the repercussions later on.&#8221; He subsequently pledged his LGBTQ allegiance, emphasis on the T. 
Virtue signaling feeds the fame monster, but it’s not the only reason so many celebrity kids call themselves trans. It’s also not even the most sinister.
To unpack the psychology behind the celebrity push to trans their kids, The Daily Wire spoke with licensed therapist <a href="https://x.com/pgarfieldjaeger?s=21&amp;t=ZAoIkqhiKpZyQayFV_2XbQ">Pamela Garfield-Jaeger, LCSW</a>. Also the author of the children’s book “<a href="https://www.amazon.com/dp/1665310774">Froggy Girl</a>” and “<a href="https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0CW1KZVTJ">A Practical Response to Gender Distress: Tips and Tools for Families</a>,” she didn’t need to work with these particular celebrity children to have thoughts. 
“Most people look at the social contagion aspect of it, and I think it&#8217;s deeper than that,” she says. “A lot of these kids are either adopted, or surrogates, or raised by someone other than their primary parents so there are some attachment issues there.”
Noting the potential fallout from any trauma, Garfield-Jaeger also points to the notorious depravity of Hollywood. “Exposure to pedophilia, or just the culture of being hyper-sexualized, can really lead them to want to reject their bodies,” she shares. “It&#8217;s in their zeitgeist.”
The struggle to establish themselves in the shadow of a world-famous parent can also serve as a trigger. “In regular families this happens a lot where the wallflower kid can come out as trans because they have not been noticed or aren’t getting the same kind of attention and praise as the star football player brother,” she says. 
It’s even worse when a parent <a href="https://today.usc.edu/usc-study-celebrities-really-are-more-narcissistic-than-the-general-public/">scores higher</a> on the self-obsession scale than the average mom and pop. “If you&#8217;ve been raised by a narcissist, that&#8217;s also another common factor for people who end up being trans,” Garfield-Jaeger notes. “Perhaps it&#8217;s a way for their parents to notice them, and wield some control or power in a circumstance where they don&#8217;t feel like they have any.”
Elon Musk described being “<a href="https://www.youtube.com/shorts/azF7Bo4Nwzw">tricked into signing documents</a>” that allowed his son, Xavier, to transition. The oldest of <a href="https://www.instyle.com/all-about-elon-musk-14-kids-and-their-four-mothers-11940372">Musk’s 14 children</a>, now known as model Vivian Wilson, told <a href="https://youtu.be/R0-eJ79kWks?t=336">Teen Vogue</a>, “I’m financially independent, which, cool, love that for me.” Claiming Musk was largely <a href="https://www.nbcnews.com/tech/tech-news/elon-musk-transgender-daughter-vivian-wilson-interview-rcna163665">absent and cruel</a>, Vivian assured a live audience, “Right now, they’re painting us all as violent mass shooters. I’m not gonna shoot anyone. I’m a model!” 
<a href="https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/gender-dysphoria/in-depth/pubertal-blockers/art-20459075">Hormone therapy</a> has been billed as a mild intervention, but it has devastating repercussions when administered and tapered off. “Ever heard of roid rage?” Garfield-Jaeger posits. “That&#8217;s basically what it is.” 
Detransitioner <a href="https://apps.legislature.ky.gov/CommitteeDocuments/362/22848/03%2014%202023%20General%20Testimony.pdf">Helena Kerschner</a> described the terror that testosterone wreaked on her body. After repeatedly being admitted to mental hospitals, she wrote, “I began experiencing uncontrollable episodes of rage and paranoia, where I was a danger to myself and others. I lost control over my body.” 
Explaining how hormone treatment affects everything from sexual preference to the ability to maintain committed relationships, Garfield-Jaeger says, “You&#8217;re basically inducing an endocrine disorder into a healthy person when you do this. There are a lot of consequences. The kids are just being celebrated into turmoil.”
“The whole trans thing is really, in my opinion, crazy, because it&#8217;s a symptom of some kind of problem or pain, but yet our entire healthcare system praises it, reinforces it, and medicalizes it,” she says. “We&#8217;re not trying to address what&#8217;s really happening that&#8217;s bubbling under the surface. With trans, all of a sudden it means they have a magical gendered soul that otherwise they&#8217;ll kill themselves, and that&#8217;s not true.”
“Anybody with eyeballs can tell this is not natural. This isn&#8217;t just more people just coming forward after being accepted. If that were true, why aren&#8217;t the older celebrities coming out as trans?” she asks. 
For some famous faces of alt lifestyle trends, the tide may be shifting toward common sense. Riling up his fanbase, outspoken makeup mogul <a href="https://x.com/GypsyPatriot_/status/1965948775236812965?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1965948775236812965%7Ctwgr%5E1de02cf895158cf27c74fa50109baa2cd2364e34%7Ctwcon%5Es1_&amp;ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.out.com%2Fmedia%2Fjeffree-star-charlie-kirk-nonbinary">Jeffree Star</a> shared on TikTok, “There’s science and there’s facts. You can pretend in your head you’re a cat. You can pretend in your head that you’re this, and you’re that. Good for you. You’re still only A or B.”
But Garfield-Jaeger notes that even doctors and therapists seeking to reverse course on the trans epidemic aren’t exactly sure how to do it yet. “I don&#8217;t think it&#8217;s a coincidence that all these Hollywood kids are trans. It&#8217;s not because they were born in the wrong bodies,” she says. “The darkness inside of them, the pain, is not being addressed, it&#8217;s being covered up. There&#8217;s something about them that&#8217;s lost.”

Self-help guru Tim Ferriss, one of the biggest names in the modern “optimize your life” universe, has apparently just arrived at a conclusion I’ve been yelling about for years: self-help is very, very bad for you. Self-help is self-harm.
Now, I have to admit something up front: I don’t know much about Tim Ferriss. I’ve heard the name before. But I avoid all self-help. It should be clear to you by now that I don’t like self-help literature. It smells like a scam from 100 miles away.
I want to improve myself, yes. I want to improve. But the self-help stuff? No. 
When I was a teenager, I read a little bit of it like &#8220;The 48 Laws of Power&#8221; by Robert Greene. Or the really famous one by Dale Carnegie, &#8220;How to Win Friends and Influence People.&#8221; That’s the classic of the self-help category.
And, as I remember it, all it boils down to this: be nice to people and remember their names. 
That’s it. I just saved you ten bucks on Amazon. 
And I guess that’s good advice.
But a lot of the self-help stuff is pretty noxious. I’ve thought this for years. And apparently Tim Ferriss agrees — at least partially.
<h3>Ferriss’ “Road To Damascus” Moment</h3>
Ferriss seems to have had a Road to Damascus moment — not necessarily with a religious conversion, but with a recognition that what he’s been doing might be wrong.
According to an article in <a href="https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2026/03/09/tim-ferriss-self-help-may-be-harming-people/">The Telegraph</a> titled, “The self-help guru who decided he might be doing more harm than good,” Ferriss is confronting his most profound insight yet in his latest blog post, “The Self-Help Trap.” The piece is about 3,000 words. It’s got all the usual &#8220;optimization&#8221; language — optimizing is one of the words they all use.
Ferriss, now 48, asks whether his own industry might, with some important caveats, be making desperate people worse rather than better.
And then he says, quote:
<blockquote>“The older I get, the more I think that self-help can be a trap. Sometimes the cure is worse than the disease. I say this after around 20 years of writing self-help, and a lifetime of consuming it &#8230; What if self-help itself is actually creating or amplifying unhappiness?”</blockquote>
Ferriss says modern self-help contains a &#8220;built-in flaw: to continually improve yourself, you must continually locate the ways you are broken.&#8221;
He gets so close. I love so much of what he’s saying — and then he totally misses the point. The point just goes right over his head. But he gets very close, and so I give him credit for the introspection.

No. That&#8217;s not what he&#8217;s doing here. I’ll give him the benefit of the doubt. I think maybe he’s being sincere. He’s in the middle of his life’s journey, and he’s had this realization.

<h3>Self-Help Is A Trap And You Can See It In The People Who Buy It</h3>
Ferriss says, “I think self-help can be a trap.” That’s true.
The people who are most obsessed with self-help, in my experience, are the most messed up, depressed people.
And you might say, well, yeah — they’re messed up. They’re trying to get help.
Well, it ain’t working.
It’s like your friend or relative who’s been going to the therapist — usually just means drug dealer, but, you know, the psychiatrist — for 30 years. They never get any better. And maybe they get more dope, but they don’t ever get any better. 
And you say, hey, have you thought about trying something different?
And they say, oh, I couldn’t, I’m so messed up—could you imagine if I lost my psychiatrist?
Hold on. Maybe you’re going that backwards. Maybe your psychiatrist is actually not helping but even compounding the problem.
I think that’s what happens with self-help, but not for the reason Tim Ferriss gives.
<h3>The Problem Isn’t “Finding What’s Broken.” It’s Denying What’s Broken.</h3>
Ferriss says self-help has this in-built flaw: to continually improve yourself, you must continually look at the ways you are broken.
That’s not the problem.
You know what else impels you to continually reflect on the ways in which you’re broken? Christianity does that, when you examine your conscience, and especially when you go and confess your sins to a priest. You have to sit down and think of the number and kind of all the ways that you are broken.
The problem with self-help is that it doesn’t do that.
The whole premise of self-help, actually, is a denial of the fundamental ways in which we are broken, because self-help, at its root, I think, denies original sin.
The whole point is that you really can help yourself. And not just help yourself a little bit. You can save yourself. You can optimize your life.
And ultimately you can’t.
You can exercise. You can work-out. You can practice certain habits of virtue. But ultimately, you can’t save yourself.
This is what the Church formally declared when it condemned the heresy of Pelagius. The problem with self-help is it misses out on the best way you can help yourself, which is looking to Someone beyond yourself.
Not looking to Tim Ferriss. Not looking to Dale Carnegie. Not looking to whatever other guru is trending on the internet this week. But looking to Someone who is greater than you — who is so far beyond humanity and yet mysteriously takes on humanity, and so understands us intimately. Not only who created us, but who has lived as one of us — who is like us in all respects, except sin.
That’s what it’s about.
<h3>A Christian Offshoot With All The Fun Parts And None Of The Obligations</h3>
Just as liberalism is a perversion — it’s kind of a spin-off of Christianity that tries to keep all the fun parts of Christianity without any of the obligations and the duties and the limits — this is the same thing with self-help.
The self-help literature I’ve read, some of it, it spins out of Christianity, and it takes away all the limits and all the essential stuff. It takes away the parts that acknowledge that not only are you broken, but you’re so broken that there is essentially nothing you can do without grace.
So, if you want to read some self-help literature, a good writer on this would be Saint Thomas Aquinas, who points out that without grace, every human being will fall into mortal sin. And even if you’re in a state of grace, you’ll still fall into venial sin.
That’s how broken we are.
<h3>The Ferriss Moment We Should All Root For</h3>
Ferriss is close. He’s very close.
We’ve got to help Tim Ferriss be great.
Wouldn’t it be great if one of the big proponents of self-help actually turned people on to real help?
Because the trap isn’t noticing your flaws. The trap is believing you can fix the deepest ones alone — believing that the answer is always inside you, always one more habit, one more hack, one more optimization away.
And that’s not liberation.
That’s just a nicer-looking cage.

Each year, as the holidays approach, countless Americans find themselves facing a very different kind of season, one marked not by joy, but by grief. This time of year brings up memories of someone they’ve lost, a relationship that has changed, or a chapter of life that will never look the same again. And while the world tells us to celebrate, the brain tells a different story. Grief changes your mood, your thinking, your energy, and your sense of peace. This is why navigating grief around the holidays requires intention, compassion, and care for your brain.
In our culture, we often feel pressure to “be okay,” especially in December. But grief doesn’t follow a calendar. It shows up in waves, some small, some overwhelming, and holidays tend to magnify everything we feel. The truth is, grief is not just emotional. It is biological. It activates the brain’s alarm system, disrupts sleep, increases stress hormones, and alters the circuits involved in focus and motivation. You’re not imagining the heaviness. Your brain is responding to loss.
When we understand this, we can respond in ways that help calm the chaos inside us instead of making it worse.
One of the most important places to begin is with routine. In seasons of grief, the basics fall apart, sleep becomes irregular, meals become inconsistent, and movement becomes optional. But the brain thrives on rhythm. Foundational habits like sleep, healthy eating, and exercise support healthy brain function and improved mental health. <a href="https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC6378489/">Research</a> shows that consistent routines calm the brain’s anxiety centers and strengthen the frontal cortex, which helps with decision-making and emotional balance. These small anchors don’t remove grief, but they give the brain a steadier foundation to handle it.
Light is another powerful tool. During fall and winter, sunlight drops and indoor time increases. Low vitamin D levels are <a href="https://link.springer.com/article/10.1186/s12991-022-00406-1">linked to depression</a>, and reduced sunlight disrupts melatonin and serotonin, two key regulators of mood. For someone already carrying sadness, this shift can intensify symptoms. Ten or fifteen minutes of morning sunlight on your skin can help stabilize your brain chemistry. When sunlight isn’t possible, bright light therapy offers an effective alternative.
When grief is present, cravings often increase, not just for food or alcohol, but the urge for escape. But numbing behaviors intensify the very feelings we’re trying to avoid. Sugar causes blood sugar spikes and crashes that worsen irritation, fatigue, and mood swings. Alcohol temporarily boosts dopamine, but leaves serotonin depleted, <a href="https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC10851576/">leading to a deeper</a> emotional crash. When your heart is hurting, your brain needs stability, not substances that destabilize it. Nourish yourself with balanced meals, water, and movement, and you’ll feel the difference.
Connection also plays a crucial role in healing. When people are grieving, they often isolate. It feels easier, safer, less demanding. But isolation heightens sadness. Social isolation is a risk factor for worsening anxiety and depression. You don’t need large gatherings or forced cheer. You need a safe person, someone who can sit with you and let you be exactly where you are.
Finally, there’s the mind itself. &#8220;Grief brain&#8221; is a term used to describe the neurological effects of loss on the brain. After an extreme loss, the body triggers the release of neurochemicals similar to those involved in the fight-flight-or-freeze response. In the following days, weeks, and months, reminders of the loss can re-ignite this chemical reaction. This grief response can rewire the brain in negative ways, changing it in several key regions.
The first of which is the prefrontal cortex. The part of the brain responsible for executive functions, like planning, judgment, impulse control, problem-solving, and decision-making. Grief effectively takes this region offline, suppressing your ability to think clearly and accomplish complex tasks.
Additionally, the limbic system, the emotional center of the brain, shifts into overdrive in times of grief, amplifying emotions like sadness, fear, and anxiety.
In the healthy brain, the limbic system provides the motivation you need to get things done, and the prefrontal cortex gives you the mental horsepower to complete important projects. Yet, in the grieving brain, this system is turned upside down, robbing you of mental clarity while heightening emotions. Grief brings thoughts that are often harsh, heavy, or untrue, and every negative thought releases chemicals that influence how you feel. It is crucial to learn how to reframe those thoughts to help reduce depressive symptoms and rewire the brain toward healthier patterns.
But perhaps the most important thing to remember is this: it’s okay to feel what you feel. The holidays are a mix of joy and pain for many people. You don’t have to pretend. Let your feelings come; they are part of healing. Suppressing emotions activates the brain’s stress circuits. Allowing them begins to release the pressure inside you.
Grief also touches the spiritual parts of us. Loss raises deep questions — about meaning, purpose, and what truly matters. Scripture reminds us in Psalm 34:18, “The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit” (NIV). Choosing hope doesn’t mean ignoring pain; it means anchoring your mind in something steady when everything else feels unstable.
Grief may be part of your holiday, but it doesn’t have to define it. With a steady routine, connection, and compassion for yourself, your brain can find its way back to balance. And over time, you can discover moments of peace again.
Your grief is real. But so is your ability to heal.

“As you can see,” the young woman <a href="https://www.instagram.com/reel/DMOjfJWR8nQ/?igsh=cTlvajd6bWY3aHA1">says</a>, referring to the mound in her arms, “the state of the world has not been great.&#8221;
A mother <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2022/02/06/health/climate-anxiety-therapy.html">describes</a> the wave of guilt and shame that floods her when she contemplates buying plastic-wrapped snacks at Trader Joe’s. College students in an exercise designed to help them create plans to achieve their goals <a href="https://www.theatlantic.com/podcasts/archive/2025/05/how-to-age-up-on-a-warming-planet/682762/">struggle</a> to envision anything but blankness or the apocalypse when picturing the future.
All around us, adults and children are struggling with their mental health after years of being bombarded with messages that a climate catastrophe is both inevitable and imminent. These feelings of dread and helplessness, <a href="https://www.axios.com/2024/02/17/gen-z-depression-anxiety-future-workforce">particularly</a> in the youngest generations, have inspired a new term: “climate” or “eco” anxiety.
Widespread climate anxiety is fueling the growth of a new specialty, with some psychologists building practices around treating the problem. Yet how to approach treatment has caused its own controversy. Mental health professionals like me are trained to keep our own views out of a counseling relationship. This would include offering any opinions about anthropogenic climate change. Other groups, such as climate activists, react poorly to viewing what they consider well-founded anxiety over climate as dysfunctional thinking.
But any thought patterns that inhibit daily functioning and contribute to depression, social withdrawal or distressing feelings need to be treated. In trying to raise awareness of a changing climate and potential implications, authority figures like teachers, topic experts and even hyperbolic climate news articles have gone too far.
Dr. Sarah Ray is the professor who <a href="https://www.theatlantic.com/podcasts/archive/2025/05/how-to-age-up-on-a-warming-planet/682762/">discovered</a> her students simply couldn’t envision a positive future. “It wasn’t just that they were living in a scary world,” she said. “It was that they were getting information about a scary world in a very particular way.”
The answer is to stop scaring people. Fear is rarely motivating. People have to feel as if they can make a change or a difference. Fear tactics only encourage feelings of helplessness and overwhelm, leading to avoidance and disconnection.
Adults must learn how to navigate these issues for their own improved mental health, as well as for effective parenting and education of the next generation. Teaching children about climate change has too often strayed from providing necessary information to dumping unfiltered fears on impressionable kids.
“It&#8217;s essential for adults to learn how to manage stress and anxiety in their own lives so we don&#8217;t pass it on to the next generation,” licensed clinical social worker and psychotherapist Amy Morin said in <a href="https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/blog/what-mentally-strong-people-dont-do/202408/10-reasons-todays-kids-are-more-anxious-than-ever">Psychology Today</a>.
This might look like building better habits, such as limiting exposure to articles about climate (stop doomscrolling).
Another technique used in cognitive behavioral therapy is redirecting attention from something distressing to something lovable as a step towards finding agency. For example, I am passionate about reducing landfill waste. When I feel afraid and angry about the size of trash piles in the ocean or how much garbage we export to other countries, I try to remember that the feelings are secondary emotions pointing to what I love. I care because I love my community and my country. I care about the world. I love my children, and I want them to inherit a planet that is healthier, not more diseased from human carelessness. I believe we are called to be good stewards.
I can’t teach my children those values by yelling at them for being wasteful or terrorizing them with scary photos, just as I can’t keep them from using drugs by enrolling them in DARE. Instead, I have to teach them to live for something beyond themselves, but also to know that while they can’t solve massive problems on their own, there is hope in performing small positive actions.

If they are not overwhelmed by the magnitude of the problem, they are better positioned to engage in the first place, individually and then in community. They will also be less vulnerable to misrepresentation of the facts if their ability to apply critical thinking is not shut down by the fear-triggered “fight, flight, or freeze” response of the amygdala in the brain. For example, instead of believing we should abandon fossil fuels, which would actually destabilize communities, they can evaluate the possibility of using technology to lessen their impact while pursuing more sustainable solutions.
Dr. Thomas Doherty has built a practice around helping people with climate anxiety. Along with coauthor Susan Clayton, they were among the first nearly 15 years ago <a href="https://psycnet.apa.org/record/2011-09485-003">to suggest</a> that climate change would have a psychological impact on people. After Portland experienced a high-pressure system called a “heat-dome” that sent temperatures soaring, one client asked Dr. Doherty if they were all doomed.
“Dr. Doherty listened quietly. Then he told her, choosing his words carefully, that the rate of climate change suggested by the data was not as swift as what she was envisioning.
‘In the future, even with worst-case scenarios, there will be good days,’ he <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2022/02/06/health/climate-anxiety-therapy.html">told</a> her, according to his notes. “‘Disasters will happen in certain places. But, around the world, there will be good days. Your children will also have good days.’”
Humans won’t be able to solve the problems we are facing if, in pursuit of gaining acknowledgement of serious problems, we believe and have taught our youngest generations that there is nothing to live for. Dr. Ray may have put it best.
“We just need better thoughts,” she <a href="https://www.theatlantic.com/podcasts/archive/2025/05/how-to-age-up-on-a-warming-planet/682762/">said</a>. “It’s not about 10 things you can do to save the planet. There’s a hundred million books out there. This is like 10 things you can think about to save the planet.”
Better thoughts can be practiced. In the next encounter with a dramatic headline about climate change, try to pause. Remember first that every climate news and opinion article today has one goal: to get a reader to click. Headlines are written with that sole aim in mind. Fear sells. Don’t fall for it. I tell my clients to notice their feelings, then to redirect their thoughts to what they love and the specific things they are practicing to stay true to their values. This will energize people to continue to be part of solutions rather than perpetuating a cycle of impotent fear.

As a clinical psychologist, I help people find the words to express what they’re feeling. For most of my career, this was a straightforward process — mostly supporting clients with anxiety and relationship or career issues. But over the past few years, I’ve noticed a shift. More and more, clients arrive not just with anxiety — but with speech anxiety. They’re not afraid of public speaking. They’re afraid that voicing a viewpoint could harm others — or be interpreted as harm itself. 
 
We’re living in a cultural moment where phrases like “words are violence” have moved from the margins into the mainstream. The instinct behind the idea is understandable. It’s rooted in compassion and a desire to protect others from emotional pain. But as someone who works with people in distress, I can say this: equating speech with physical violence doesn’t foster safety. It fosters fragility — and avoidance of the very emotional tools we need to thrive. 
 
Yes, words can hurt. They can be cruel, dismissive, even traumatizing but to label words as violent collapses a crucial distinction. Physical violence is something we’re biologically wired to avoid at all costs. It triggers a primal response — fight, flight, freeze — that can be lifesaving, in the right context. But when we teach people to respond to challenging conversations as if they’re being physically attacked, we inadvertently hijack that same physiological stress response. We turn everyday discomfort into a perceived emergency. 
 
This distinction isn’t just philosophical — it’s embedded in clinical ethics. As a licensed psychologist, I’m legally required to break confidentiality if a client discloses an imminent threat of physical violence. But if a client tells me they plan to say something rude, offensive, or even hateful, I’m not only permitted to keep that information confidential — I’m obligated to do so. That’s because speech and violence are fundamentally different categories of concern. One may call for a conversation. The other may call for an intervention. Blurring that boundary in everyday life creates confusion, not clarity. 
 
This can lead to serious emotional fallout. Clients tell me they’ve ended friendships, distanced themselves from family, or left jobs because of political or social disagreements that they once would have handled with a spirited discussion. They often say they feel “unsafe” around people with differing views — not because of any actual threat, but because of what those views might represent. That interpretation leads not to empowerment, but to chronic anxiety. 
 
Over time, this kind of hypervigilance doesn’t just shape relationships, it reshapes the self. In therapy, I see people move through the classic defense mechanisms we’re trained to watch for: suppression, repression, and denial. Suppression is when you’re aware of a thought or feeling but actively push it down. Repression is when the mind buries those thoughts so deeply that you’re no longer even conscious of them. Denial occurs when a person distorts their view of reality to avoid an uncomfortable truth. 
 
When people feel they must stifle their thoughts or language to remain socially acceptable, suppression is often the first step. But if suppression becomes a habit, it can slide into repression — people lose access to parts of themselves. Eventually, they may engage in denial: reframing a difficult relationship or viewpoint not as a difference of opinion, but as a danger to be avoided. From a mental health standpoint, this is where we start to see symptoms escalate — more anxiety, more relational conflict, and a diminished capacity to process emotions with nuance. 
 
This dynamic also connects to a broader societal trend. In 2023, the U.S. Surgeon General <a href="https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/37792968/">declared loneliness</a> a public health epidemic. We are more digitally connected than ever — and yet we feel increasingly cut off. That’s partly because people are afraid to express themselves authentically. If you’re always editing what you say — or editing who you are — you’re not really connecting. You’re performing. And performance doesn’t build intimacy. 
 
The goal isn’t to dismiss emotional pain or encourage rudeness. Psychological abuse is real, and words can leave deep scars. But we must be careful not to overextend the concept of harm to the point where disagreement feels dangerous. When that happens, people don’t just walk away from conflict — they walk away from each other. 
 
We also risk missing the bigger picture: that open dialogue is one of the most effective tools we have for growth, both individually and socially. Research in conflict resolution shows that meaningful change often begins with conversation — not censorship. Even in extreme cases — such as hate group de-radicalization — studies repeatedly show that dialogue, not silence, is what moves people out of entrenched thinking. 
 
What we need now is a more balanced framework — one that acknowledges the emotional impact of speech without mistaking it for physical harm. We should be equipping people with emotional skills: the ability to tolerate discomfort, name their feelings, and respond with clarity instead of retreating in fear. These are the building blocks of psychological resilience and they’re far more protective than trying to sanitize the world of anything potentially upsetting. 
 
In my work, I’ve seen that when people stop fearing their own voices — and stop fearing others’ — they grow stronger. They communicate better. They form deeper, more authentic relationships. That doesn’t happen when we treat words like weapons. It happens when we remember what words are for: understanding, connection, and sometimes, respectful disagreement. 
 
Words can hurt. But they can also heal. Let’s not confuse one for the other — because when we do, we risk losing the ability to use language as the powerful, human tool it’s meant to be.

Pedro Pascal is everywhere right now: on TV, in movies, and, if a female co-star is nearby, all over her.
Though he’s been lauded by Hollywood for years as the new standard of a leading male — sensitive, progressive, charming — Pascal&#8217;s behavior on the “Fantastic Four: First Steps&#8221; press tour has even his most fervent fans questioning his motives. The “Gladiator II” star is constantly caressing his pregnant co-star, Vanessa Kirby. Whether <a href="https://www.tiktok.com/@vanityfair/video/7529742724388375838" target="_blank" rel="noopener">rubbing</a> her stomach or <a href="https://x.com/pascalarchive/status/1817428835173863626" target="_blank" rel="noopener">stroking her arm</a> until she takes his hand, Pascal seems to always be touching the 37-year-old English actress.
In the post-MeToo era, Pascal’s behavior is bound to raise some eyebrows. But to hear him tell it, it’s ok. He’s not creepy. He’s just anxious.
Though Pascal has not specifically commented on this, the claim that he requires physical touch to calm his anxiety while appearing in public has widely circulated on social media.
Pascal famously <a href="https://people.com/style/pedro-pascal-tells-bella-ramsey-his-frequent-red-carpet-pose-is-to-curb-his-anxiety/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">discussed</a> his anxiety in a 2023 interview alongside his “The Last of Us” co-star Bella Ramsey. Placing a hand on his stomach, Pascal told the crowd, “My anxiety is right there.” The clip, and others like it, endeared Pascal to fans, reinforcing the image of a sensitive, self-aware leading man who stood in stark contrast to the “toxic masculinity” that Hollywood had begun to revile.
But Pascal’s penchant for squeezing and rubbing Kirby — who is in a relationship with Professional Lacrosse League co-founder Paul Rabil — has fans rethinking whether the actor is really as sensitive and nontoxic as they thought.
Things have become so dire that some of Pascal’s most vocal supporters now claim he is the target of a smear campaign due to his vocal support of transgender rights. Regardless, the tomcat may be out of the bag. Internet sleuths seem to uncover a new video of Pascal’s red-carpet affections every day. Now, Hollywood’s favorite sensitive star is at the center of a conversation about boundaries, mental health, and whether an anxiety diagnosis could potentially be used as a free pass for inappropriate behavior.
Clinical psychologist Dr. Andrew Hartz, founder and president of the <a href="https://www.opentherapyinstitute.org/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Open Therapy Institute</a>, spoke with The Daily Wire about the Pascal drama and how mental health is treated in this country more broadly.
“I think I have two initial thoughts about it,” Hartz said of Pascal’s situation. “One is that if somebody has anxiety, it doesn&#8217;t negate your need for personal boundaries.”
“Whether they have anxiety or any mental illness [it’s important] to have personal boundaries about what you&#8217;re comfortable with,” he explained. “And so I think it&#8217;s important to keep that in mind. Regardless of whatever diagnosis he may or may not have, it&#8217;s totally legitimate — and I think important — for other people to set boundaries about what they&#8217;re comfortable with.”
That might seem like common sense, but these lines are crossed all the time, especially when a mental health label is introduced. When asked if using anxiety as an explanation might lead to people excusing otherwise boundary-crossing behavior, Hartz didn’t mince words.
“I&#8217;m really skeptical about these attempts to treat anxiety by accommodating it in particular,” he said. “A lot of times, when you accommodate anxiety, it makes it worse. Like, if you have a fear of elevators, and so you take the stairs instead, what will happen is you&#8217;ll kind of get &#8230; a dopamine hit for taking the stairs because your anxiety goes down. And the elevator gets scarier.”
“So honestly, the more you avoid and use these safety behaviors to cope with anxiety, it can make it worse,” he continued. “I don&#8217;t know of any treatment for anxiety that encourages behaviors like that.”
So, what would actual treatment look like?
“Depending on what the anxiety is — it sounds like [for Pascal] it&#8217;s like a social anxiety — the most effective treatments are exposure, where you&#8217;re exposed to your anxiety without the safety behaviors over time, so that you learn to tolerate it,” Hartz said. “And these other behaviors, not exposing yourself to that and avoiding that, could potentially make it worse and even lead it to generalize.”
It’s not just about ineffective coping, either. There’s also the matter of accountability. Pascal’s defenders, including some of his co-stars, may appear to be fine with it. But what happens when someone isn’t?
“Even whoever he&#8217;s touching, they need to be able to consent based on what they&#8217;re comfortable with,” Hartz said. “And so if they&#8217;re not comfortable with it, his label doesn&#8217;t matter. So I don&#8217;t know if maybe using the label leads people to let their boundaries be violated in ways that they wouldn&#8217;t otherwise allow, which is not healthy.”
In other words, labeling yourself as anxious doesn’t give you a license to touch people who haven’t clearly consented, and shouldn’t make a person more likely to consent based on that diagnosis.
Hartz also pointed to a deeper cultural shift in how mental health is discussed and how some public figures, intentionally or not, may be using diagnoses as a way to shield themselves from criticism or scrutiny.
“The whole reason that the diagnostic labels exist is so that people can get evidence-based treatments,” he said. “So it&#8217;s interesting the way that diagnostic labels have [become] seen as permanent traits of an identity.”
“It&#8217;s so strange because it&#8217;s like the whole reason you have the label is so that you can effectively treat it and not have those symptoms anymore. Not to say, ‘This is who you are, a person with anxiety forever,’ and everybody needs to accommodate.”
“It&#8217;s really strange the way these labels, I think especially on social media, have taken on a life of their own,” he added. “It’s almost like they&#8217;re a permanent, unchanging part of somebody&#8217;s identity as opposed to like a tool for clinicians to help address problems.”
Hartz’s bottom line was clear: “If you have an anxiety disorder, get treatment. That&#8217;s what I would say.”
In a culture that increasingly elevates mental health awareness, it’s also worth asking whether some public figures are hiding behind the language of self-care to excuse behavior that, in another context, might be seen as intrusive or even predatory.
Pascal may see his actions as harmless. But as Hartz said, “The reason why the labels exist is to help treatments develop where people… can get over the symptoms, not so that everybody else in society accommodates.”
In summary: Anxiety is real, but so are boundaries. And one doesn’t cancel out the other.

Once, when I was young, I told a girl, “You can’t solve your problems until you stop being proud of them.” In general, this is a terrible thing to say to a woman. As a sex, women tend to hold their problems very dear and view any attempt at a solution as a domineering masculine intrusion. In this particular case, however, I had chosen my moment, and the girl married me. Which, come to think of it, may have proved my point.
More seriously, though, there is nothing people hold onto so tightly as their worst behaviors, and nothing more useless than telling them to stop doing the thing that hurts them most. In my 2009 novel “Empire of Lies,” the protagonist reflects on friends who have headed down The Road to Disaster.
<blockquote>“Sometimes it even happened that these friends… would come to [my wife] Cathy and me… and ask us for our advice. ‘We are heading down the Road to Disaster,’ they would say. ‘What can we do to avoid the Disaster at the end?’ And Cathy and I would answer, ‘Stop. This isn’t just true of individuals, whole nations do the same. World War I is the perfect example. &#8220;On or around December 1910, human character changed,” wrote Virginia Woolf. She was referring, with hyperbolic exactitude, to the onset of modernism in the arts. When one looks at the dissolution of realism and metaphysical certainties in the writings of Nietzsche or the paintings of Munch and Picasso, when one reflects on how art expresses the spirit of the age, it should have been almost obvious that Europe would soon begin the thirty years of self-annihilation that transformed it from the greatest culture that had ever existed on Earth to the hollow corpse we see being devoured by Islamists today.
And yet European leaders leapt to that death in 1914 and waited passively for it in the 1930’s, as if no other course were open to them.
My own stumble into political commentary was spurred, not by my commitment to one kind of politics over another, but by my observation that one side had gone palpably insane with self-hatred. What I don’t know, what I guess we’ll find out, is whether this was just the philosophical expression of a fatal organic decline, or a purposeful turn down the Road to Disaster from which we yet might turn away.

There are few weapons in politics that are more effective than mass disorientation. If you can confuse people about obvious truths, then they become much easier to control. This is a familiar tactic to most living Americans at this point. We are, after all, the first generation in the history of the world to have to grapple with the absurdity that men can change their gender at will. But there&#8217;s really a whole art form to mass disorientation. It&#8217;s not just about spreading big lies. It also involves confusing people at every possible opportunity.
We&#8217;re confronted with deception like this all of the time. Media outlets and purported experts will repeatedly tell us to assume something is true, or to accept some new framework, even when it&#8217;s clearly false. This can continue for decades, without interruption or pushback from anyone.
Consider, for example, the topic of so-called &#8220;conversion therapy,&#8221; which the Supreme Court has just announced it will address in a few months. This could very well end up being the single most important free-speech case of our generation.
Before we get into the specifics of the case, it&#8217;s important to recognize that &#8220;conversion therapy&#8221; is a term that&#8217;s been widely adopted by every mainstream institution in this country. Look through newspapers going back decades, and you&#8217;ll find tens of thousands of articles using the term as if it means something. And in particular, we&#8217;ve been told, it means something very bad — like using some sort of coercive tactic to force a homosexual patient to become straight, or convincing a trans-identifying individual that, in fact, he&#8217;s not really transgender.
Without exception, you&#8217;re commanded to think of these alleged &#8220;conversions&#8221; as acts of unspeakable evil. As of today, for instance, YouTube places a disclaimer written by the far-Left group &#8220;The Trevor Project&#8221; underneath every video discussing the topic of conversion therapy. They&#8217;ll probably append this disclaimer to this episode, too. The disclaimer reads: &#8220;Conversion therapy refers to a range of dangerous and discredited practices aimed at changing one’s sexual orientation or gender identity or expression.&#8221;
Well, that sounds ominous. Conversion therapy, according to The Trevor Project and Silicon Valley, isn&#8217;t simply a bad idea. In fact, it&#8217;s &#8220;dangerous.&#8221; It&#8217;s like playing with downed power lines. You could lose your life because of conversion therapy. And indeed, the name &#8220;conversion therapy&#8221; is intended to bring images like that to mind. You&#8217;re supposed to picture horrifying scenes of people strapped to gurneys and given electric shocks or lobotomies.

Amid all this discussion about how horrible &#8220;conversion therapy&#8221; is, the one thing you&#8217;re not supposed to do is pause for a second and realize that &#8220;conversion therapy&#8221; — at least as it’s described by the Left — isn’t a real thing. The leftist conception of so-called “conversion therapy” is a fantasy. It&#8217;s like Big Foot, or the bogeyman. It is a myth intended to scare people and disorient them. By endlessly warning of the dangers of &#8220;conversion therapy,&#8221; the Left has successfully reframed the debate, so that most people go along with the general concept. But there&#8217;s no reason to do that.
For one thing, &#8220;conversion therapy&#8221; when applied to &#8220;gender identity&#8221; is an entirely incoherent concept. To be very clear, they call it &#8220;conversion therapy&#8221; when a counselor or therapist doesn&#8217;t assist or affirm the attempted conversion of a boy to a girl, or vice versa. Counseling that helps a boy accept himself for who he is, or a girl for who she is, is considered &#8220;conversion therapy,&#8221; even though it&#8217;s precisely the opposite of conversion therapy. In fact, what they call &#8220;gender affirmation&#8221; is actually conversion therapy, and what they call conversion therapy is actually gender affirmation. They have completely inverted the meaning of the word “conversion,” so that trying to change someone is affirmation and trying to help them accept themselves for who they are is conversion.
There&#8217;s arguably a better case for calling Christian counseling around same-sex attraction &#8220;conversion therapy,&#8221; in a sense. The counselor would be trying to help a person overcome their same-sex attraction, thereby helping them &#8220;convert&#8221; from gay to straight (if that&#8217;s how you want to put it). But if that&#8217;s the framing, then all therapy is a form of &#8220;conversion therapy.&#8221; All therapy aims to convert patients from one state to another — ideally, from a less-functional state to a more functional one. A depressed person might go to the therapist in order to be &#8220;converted&#8221; into a happy person. A schizophrenic might go to the therapist in order to be &#8220;converted&#8221; to a patient who doesn&#8217;t hear voices. And so on.
So at worst, we have an incoherent term. At best, it&#8217;s redundant. And that&#8217;s precisely the reason &#8220;conversion therapy&#8221; has become a rallying cry for the Left. They know they can&#8217;t come out and admit that they want to ban speech, under the First Amendment. But when they cloak their speech bans by claiming they&#8217;re really banning &#8220;conversion therapy,&#8221; a lot of people will fall for it. In fact, I’m guessing if you did a poll of the average Republican voter and asked them how they feel about conversion therapy, a large number of them would insist that it’s an evil thing and they don’t support it.

The goal here, of course, is to force mental-health professionals to baptize as many young people as possible into the LGBT religion. And the easiest way of doing that is to ban these mental-health professionals from saying anything that might steer young people away from that path. That&#8217;s why nearly two-dozen states have outlawed so-called &#8220;conversion therapy,&#8221; and several other states ban the use of government funding for the practice. If a young boy comes into a psychologist&#8217;s office and says he&#8217;s really a girl, then in many cases, it would be against the law for the psychologist to disagree. The psychologist is legally barred from telling the boy that he is in fact actually a boy.
This is a flagrant violation of the First Amendment — both because it restricts the freedom of speech and the free exercise of religion. The government is telling counselors — who are Christian in many cases — that they can&#8217;t say certain words or communicate certain ideas to their patients. And the counselors&#8217; clients, who are also often Christian, are being told that they can&#8217;t seek this type of care. A grown adult with same-sex attraction is, under these laws, prohibited from seeking care to overcome that attraction. The law is saying that the same sex attracted person who wants to be straight is not allowed to want that. This is a position that the Left has staked out, even though it obviously contradicts their supposed commitment to &#8220;keeping the government out of the doctor&#8217;s office.&#8221; (How quickly that principle goes out the window, when there&#8217;s free speech to ban.) These are the people who also say that if a parent wants to get sex change treatments for their child, it’s none of our business. Remember that was the case Chris Hayes made to Bill Maher a couple of weeks ago. Well, what if a parent wants to get treatment for a child to help them overcome same sex attraction? Suddenly all of that “it’s none of our business” stuff disappears. Suddenly it is very much Chris Hayes’s business. Funny how that works.
After many years, as I mentioned, bans on so-called &#8220;conversion therapy&#8221; are finally heading to the Supreme Court. On Monday, the Court agreed to hear the case of Kaley Chiles, a Christian who&#8217;s also a licensed therapist. She&#8217;s banned under Colorado law from telling patients that there&#8217;s no way to change their gender. She&#8217;s also banned from counseling them against a homosexual lifestyle. If Chiles wins the case, then dozens of state-level bans on so-called &#8220;conversion therapy&#8221; could be struck down immediately. Watch:

The core legal issue, as you heard, is whether or not bans on &#8220;conversion therapy&#8221; constitute bans on speech, or whether they constitute bans on &#8220;conduct&#8221;. The various federal appeals courts are split on this issue, somehow. And now the Supreme Court is set to resolve this split among the lower courts.
Just to dissect that a little bit more, because it really is incredible — Democrats are arguing in court that it doesn&#8217;t violate the First Amendment for the government to punish therapists who say certain things to their patients. They&#8217;re arguing that therapy sessions are really a form of &#8220;conduct&#8221; — like a surgical procedure, for example — and therefore, they can be regulated extensively by the government.
As lawyers for the state of Colorado put it, &#8220;a professional’s treatment of her patients and clients is fundamentally different, for First Amendment purposes, from laypersons’ interactions with each other.&#8221; Therefore, they want the Supreme Court to uphold Colorado&#8217;s law, which defines conversion therapy as, quote “any practice or treatment by a licensed physician specializing in the practice of psychiatry that attempts or purports to change an individual’s sexual orientation or gender identity.” The ban includes, &#8220;efforts to change behaviors or gender expressions or to eliminate or reduce sexual or romantic attraction or feelings toward individuals of the same sex.&#8221; 
What&#8217;s left unexplained here is how, exactly, speech can become &#8220;conduct&#8221; simply because of the job of the person saying it. That doesn&#8217;t seem clear. Nor is it clear how the law permits the treatment of &#8220;de-transitioners.&#8221; These are people who often want a therapist&#8217;s assistance as they reject their own assumed &#8220;gender identity,&#8221; which under the terms of this law, would seem to be illegal. These are the kinds of problems you run into when you start regulating speech and pretending it&#8217;s &#8220;conduct.&#8221;
Fortunately, there are signs that this particular challenge will be successful. The Supreme Court recently turned away a similar challenge to a ban on &#8220;conversion therapy,&#8221; but they&#8217;re taking this case. And the plaintiff is represented in this case by the group Alliance Defending Freedom, which famously defended the Colorado baker who didn&#8217;t want to bake a wedding cake for a gay couple. They also defended a web designer who didn&#8217;t want to make a website celebrating gay marriages. And Alliance Defending Freedom won both of those cases. They have a very long and successful track record of affirming the right of free expression.
But the clearest sign that Alliance Defending Freedom is going to win this case is that the Left&#8217;s fundamental position, when you follow it to its logical conclusion, simply does not make any sense. They say that sexual orientation is immutable and unchangeable, which is why they claim conversion therapy can&#8217;t possibly work. But at the same time, they also say that sex is very mutable and changeable. Put it mildly, this doesn&#8217;t compute. How can it be that a man might become a woman, but a gay person can&#8217;t possibly become a straight person? How the hell is one a matter of self-identity and the other isn&#8217;t?

And on top of that, to change your sex is to change your sexual orientation. This is the logical problem that they can&#8217;t escape. If a straight man becomes a woman — and if he really is a woman, as they say — then he has not only gone from man to woman but from straight to lesbian. If sexual orientation is immutable, and if a sex is mutable, it would mean that every heterosexual man who transitions must transition into a heterosexual woman, which is to say he must now be attracted to men. But that&#8217;s not how it works most of the time. Usually by his own claim he goes from a straight man attracted to women to a lesbian woman attracted to women. That is what quote-unquote “trans women” say about themselves. They themselves are claiming that their sexual orientation changed.
Explaining all of this shouldn&#8217;t be necessary. It&#8217;s obvious to everyone when you spell it out. And of course, that&#8217;s why they came up with the term &#8220;conversion therapy&#8221; in the first place. The entire purpose of inventing the term is to obfuscate as much as possible, so that the issue is so muddled that no one can follow the logic anymore. It is yet another tool of mass disorientation, created by activists for their own political ends.
But in just a few months, these activists will have to take their case to the Supreme Court. They will have to convince the justices that a ban on speech isn&#8217;t really a ban on speech. It&#8217;s the kind of self-defeating argument that gender activists have successfully relied on for years, because no one&#8217;s ever challenged it. But that&#8217;s changing now. There&#8217;s a very real chance that the LGBT club is about to lose one of its most important tools for indoctrinating the youth, if this decision goes the way we think it will. For the benefit of millions of children seeking mental-health services, as well as anyone who values the First Amendment in this country, that decision can&#8217;t come soon enough.

Question: I’ve worked in emergency medicine for 11 years, and I’ve seen a lot of death. Yet I am so afraid of dying. Any advice on how I can be at peace with dying and mortality?
Answer: Well, I do not know that anyone is ever really at peace with the reality of death. Read Socrates’ “Apology.” There are two versions: Plato’s and Xenophon’s. They are quite short, only a few pages long, so read both. Why read “Apology”? Because Socrates puts forward an interesting proposition and one worth contemplating. 
Implicit in Socrates’ “Apology” is the suggestion to imagine that you lived your life fully. Living your life fully would mean that you say what you have to say when you have to say it, and you do what you need to do when you need to do it. It would mean you avail yourself of every opportunity that comes your way. You would exhaust yourself in the service of your life. Then, maybe by the time you were old, you would have had enough. And you could just let go. 
You see this with older people, and we know this sometimes when we grieve. When a relative who is 95 dies, people are sad, but they often say, “They lived a full life.” The fuller the life, the less catastrophic the demise appears to be in some ways. So it might be that if you fully exhausted yourself, your life would be enough. After all, when people are old and look back on their life, they are often sorrowful and regretful for the things they did not do, the things they left undone, and in their older age, cannot do.
I asked my parents once if they could take a drug that would return them to being physically 18-years-old but were able to keep the wisdom they had accrued over the years, if they would do it. They did not say yes right away. Yet they did not say no right away either. I do not know if they ever told me what they had decided. But it is interesting to ponder because you would think if you were offered something approximating immortality and health, you would take it. And maybe you would.

An alternative proposition would be to extract out an extra decade. It is not as though I am not trying to maintain myself; keeping oneself healthy seems like a good thing. But would I want to live 500 years? That is a long time. 1,000 years? I do not know. But the alternative is truncated existence with death — and that is also not particularly palatable. So, is there a medicament for mortality?
For those who are parents with now-grown children, would you have children again? Maybe the answer is yes, but another answer is, “Well, I had kids already. I already did that.” And if you did that well, maybe that is enough. Tammy and I have grandchildren now, which is not the same as having children, though it is kids-like, and it is wonderful. Tammy has joked that grandchildren have all the advantages of children with none of the disadvantages.
Everyone laughs at that because everyone understands the sentiment. It is great to have grandchildren. But would we return to our youth and do it again? That is a difficult question to answer. You cannot really know what you would decide unless that option were actually to become available to you. Maybe the answer is yes. Maybe the answer is no because we have been there and done that. So it is on to whatever the next thing is.
If you are afraid of death, take a look at how you are living and see if you are all in. Maybe if you are all in enough, that is and will be good enough. I also believe if you are all in, and death visits, and you know death is impending, you could say to yourself, “I did everything that I was here to do.” At least then you will not torture yourself with that as you are facing death.

“Pinocchio” is a story that includes an initiation ritual and a journey to the depths (the underworld). It is a story of the consequence of a collapse of previous personality and the disintegration of that previous personality into a chaotic state prior to rebirth.
Pinocchio, a puppet, tries to become a real boy. In the beginning, he is a marionette. <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/the-role-of-the-holy-spirit-distinguishing-between-your-will-and-gods-will" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Carl Jung</a> explained that is your habitual state of being: Something else is pulling your strings. Even the idea that you are autonomous is the consequence of something else pulling your strings, so for Jung, what you needed to do was find out exactly who and what is pulling your strings and decide if that is the direction in which you want to go. That is what happens to Pinocchio in the story.
Pinocchio is a marionette made by Geppetto, a good father. He is a marionette with a benevolent puppeteer. But as soon as he develops some autonomy, he becomes prey to forces that are elements of the demonic archetype. In fact, the worst bad guy in the entire story turns into Satan himself. So Pinocchio goes through a series of temptations of various sorts, including a Freudian temptation to remain weak and sickly instead of becoming a real person. Another temptation Pinocchio faces is being offered false celebrity as a way of solving his life’s problems. He is offered the opportunity to become an actor when a deceitful fate constructs a persona that makes him appear far more valuable than he really is. These are two pathological modes of movement towards maturity — one being a phony, and the other taking the easy way out and hyper-valuing pathologies to the degree he becomes dependent.
The third pathological development offered to Pinocchio occurs on Pleasure Island, which is to do nothing but engage in short-term impulsive and destructive play. But when he goes to Pleasure Island, he finds that the island is actually ruled by demonic forces, faceless entities who are transforming all the pleasure-seeking marionettes into donkeys who are slaves. Pinocchio escapes from that by jumping into the unknown, represented by jumping into the water, which is equivalent to <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/the-role-of-the-holy-spirit-distinguishing-between-your-will-and-gods-will" target="_blank" rel="noopener">plunging into chaos</a> — his exposure to his initiation. In other words, chaos was an escape from pathological tyranny.
Now, the cricket. While I cannot tell you everything about this element of the story, I can tell you a couple strange notions about it. The initials are J.C., and Jiminy Cricket was a common, mild-form of Southern American cursing; it is the equivalent of Jesus Christ. So you might think, and of course, the cricket is Pinocchio’s conscience. So why in the world would a pejorative term for Jesus Christ be applied to a cricket who is guiding a puppet into the water to rescue his father from a whale? Why would any of that happen? You know why but you cannot say why. You cannot say why you know or what it is you know, but the mere fact that it makes sense — and it does — is an indication from a Jungian perspective that you are operating at an archetypal level.
Further, the cricket is a bug. Why might this be? Well, things bug you. You should do something about the things that bug you because that is your conscience calling to you. It is destiny, in some sense, manifesting itself as an unconscious impulse. Now, there are a lot of things out there that might bug you; some of them do not, but lots of them do. Why do certain things bug you and not other things? That is a complicated question, but one potential answer is that there is part of your psyche that is oriented <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/the-role-of-the-holy-spirit-distinguishing-between-your-will-and-gods-will" target="_blank" rel="noopener">towards further development</a>. Jung would call that the self — essentially, the totality of everything you could be. It is a strange sort of entity because it is partly potential and it is potential that expands across time. But the way that your potential totality calls to you in the present is by placing things in front of you that are your problem. They announce themselves as your problem by bothering you. So if you pick up the task of fixing the thing <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/the-role-of-the-holy-spirit-distinguishing-between-your-will-and-gods-will" target="_blank" rel="noopener">that bothers you</a>, then you find the pathway to further expansion of your personality.

That is what happens with Pinocchio. Part of what makes the “Pinocchio” story so incredibly sophisticated is that despite the fact the cricket is an avatar of Christ, so to speak, the cricket has things to learn just like Pinocchio. That implies that you do have a conscience that guides you, but until you establish a dialogue with it, both you and the conscience are immature. You have to establish a conscious dialogue with it and interact together, which propels your development across time. That will stop you from being a marionette of external forces.
Many events at multiple levels of reality happen simultaneously when Pinocchio goes home, which is characteristic of an archetypal story. On one level, Pinocchio is too old to go home; he cannot go home to his father because, in some sense, he has already transcended his father Geppetto. That is on the personal level. On the transpersonal level, the deeper archetypal level, what is happening to Pinocchio is exactly what Nietzsche described at the end of the 19th century. Geppetto is his creator, and now he is dead; he is gone. So Pinocchio is bereft of placement. His soul has been corrupted, and he does not know what to do about it. When he returns to his family home, or to his tradition, he finds nothing.
But then a dove comes along and drops a note right in front of Pinocchio. The star from which the dove comes is a representation of the blue fairy, who is the positive element of the unknown. What this scene is basically saying is: When you are despairing because your father has died and your tradition has nothing to offer, the positive <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/the-role-of-the-holy-spirit-distinguishing-between-your-will-and-gods-will" target="_blank" rel="noopener">element of the unknown</a> may provide you with a message of where to go if you pay enough attention. That is an intuition of the automatic attraction of your interests to a new thing by forces you do not understand.
One of the real ways of coming to grips with the active unconscious is by understanding you cannot control what you are interested in. If it is not you, then you might ask who or what it is. And if you think about that problem long enough, you will start to understand what Jung was talking about. That is the way you can understand in your own life that the things that direct you as a being are not things that you consciously choose. In fact, they are not even things you can consciously choose.
