As the University of Notre Dame faces concerns of false advertising, it may be time for Catholic students and tuition-paying parents to ask themselves if they can get a discount on the <a href="https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://financialaid.nd.edu/costs-and-affordability/*:*:text=Table_title:*20Average*20Cost*20of*20Attendance*20for*202025*2D2026,Item:*20Personal*20Expenses*20*7C*20Cost:*20$1*2C200*20*7C__;I34lJSUlJSUlJSUlJSUlJSUl!!PxibshUo2Yr_Ta5B!xeeyTqD64ZFzG_RrEs6Yd0Qaau2zcy6SUEERwZ4F45ZWTmEYrJm7W1nCOGIuVsLO4nor7TKURdD2VfAPiiLS$">$90,000</a> per year price tag. While the school&#8217;s website <a href="https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://www.nd.edu/faith/__;!!PxibshUo2Yr_Ta5B!xeeyTqD64ZFzG_RrEs6Yd0Qaau2zcy6SUEERwZ4F45ZWTmEYrJm7W1nCOGIuVsLO4nor7TKURdD2VTuaGZjq$">reads,</a> “Notre Dame’s Catholic character informs all it does,” the recent promotion of a pro-abortion professor leaves that statement in doubt.
It’s hard to see how that Catholic character led the school to appoint an outspoken abortion activist to a leadership role. Either the Holy Father, church tradition, and the Bible are all mistaken, and the Catholic faith can in fact coexist with abortion, or Notre Dame is seriously misinformed as to what being Catholic actually means.
Susan Ostermann, the abortion proponent in question, was employed at the university for almost nine years as a professor before the school announced her appointment as the new director of the Keough School of Global Affairs’ Liu Institute of Asia and Asian Studies.
During her tenure, Ostermann used her platform to author and coauthor multiple articles on abortion.
“Forced pregnancy and childbirth is violence,” wrote Ostermann for <a href="https://www.salon.com/2022/05/04/forced-pregnancy-and-childbirth-are-violence-against-women-and-also-terrible-health-policy/">Salon.com</a>. “It is sexual abuse. It is trauma.”
“When the state supports forced pregnancy and childbirth, it is complicit in this violence,” she continues.

Of course, almost all of the claims in Ostermann’s articles are false. It was the early pro-abortion movement, not the pro-life movement, that stemmed from racism and promoted eugenics. Nor, as Ostermann implies in her other article, are a large portion of pregnancies (or abortions) the result of rape.
But even setting aside the accuracy of Ostermann’s claims, her articles highlight a much deeper issue: a lack of belief in the sanctity of life. It’s impossible to believe that life is sacred while also believing that protecting preborn lives is “violence.”
Most would have expected better of Notre Dame. Recently, the top-ranked school did get a “B” in <a href="https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://www.instituteforprolifeadvancement.org/christian-schools-tied-to-big-abortion-2025-research-results/__;!!PxibshUo2Yr_Ta5B!xeeyTqD64ZFzG_RrEs6Yd0Qaau2zcy6SUEERwZ4F45ZWTmEYrJm7W1nCOGIuVsLO4nor7TKURdD2VbVu2X9l$">Students for Life’s Christian Schools</a> report that looked at 725 Christian colleges and universities claiming to be faith-based (excluding denominations that support abortion).
We found that fully 114 self-proclaimed Christian colleges have ties to abortion. That’s 114 schools directly violating the faith they proclaim. In Notre Dame’s case, their Gender Studies Program (and that’s a red flag) held an event “<a href="https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://genderstudies.nd.edu/events-and-news/events/2023/03/20/trans-care-abortion-care-intersections-and-questions/__;!!PxibshUo2Yr_Ta5B!xeeyTqD64ZFzG_RrEs6Yd0Qaau2zcy6SUEERwZ4F45ZWTmEYrJm7W1nCOGIuVsLO4nor7TKURdD2Vcm379w-$">Trans Care &amp; Abortion Care”</a> featuring outspoken abortion advocates. That makes two major strikes against the school, apparently masquerading as a mentor of future Catholic leaders.
The most fundamental Christian principle is the sanctity of life. God created humans in his image, bestowing upon them inherent worth and value starting at the point of conception. Through that creation, humans derive, or are “endowed by their Creator with,” certain rights — including, for example, the right to life.
Abortion directly contradicts that principle, painting life as something meaningless to be destroyed at the convenience of another. In fact, <a href="https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://catholicvote.org/pope-tells-political-conference-attendees-greatest-destroyer-peace-abortion/__;!!PxibshUo2Yr_Ta5B!xeeyTqD64ZFzG_RrEs6Yd0Qaau2zcy6SUEERwZ4F45ZWTmEYrJm7W1nCOGIuVsLO4nor7TKURdD2VWoA4mIk$">Pope Leo XIV paid tribute to Mother Teresa</a> recently by noting that “the greatest destroyer of peace today is abortion.”
By appointing Ostermann, Notre Dame has established — in its leadership, no less — someone who stands against everything it proclaims to believe.
In one of Ostermann’s articles, she writes, “When we stand by… we are complicit as well.” She was referring to states “forcing unwanted pregnancies” by restricting abortion. Ironically, her words ring true for Christians. If we stand silent while “Christian” institutions betray the Savior they confess by supporting the murder of infants in the name of compassion and love, then we are complicit.
What must happen instead?
For students, parents, and donors, the path forward is clear: Pressure Christian schools to either cut ties to abortion or stop falsely claiming Christ.
For other Christians, speaking out can take different forms — volunteering at a pro-life pregnancy center, supporting a pregnant community member and enabling her to choose life, or even taking to a public platform to proclaim the truth that abortion is murder.
For a self-proclaimed Catholic university — one that describes its actions as motivated by its faith — to appoint such a person to a leadership role exposes, at best, a lack of wisdom and, at worst, complete and utter moral decay.
This is a good time to pray a Hail Mary, to pray for us sinners, and those leading the schools where we send the next generation of leaders, that they be taught to uphold the faith and not to ignore it.

Life for conservatives can often feel like an endless series of setbacks. As the Left continues to wage war on reality and convert more people into their cult of insanity, it often feels like we’re fighting an unwinnable war.
But if you pay attention, there are often victories on the battlefield that should encourage us all to keep fighting the good fight.
Today’s moment of justice has to do with a <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/woke-college-puts-professor-on-leave-for-handing-out-jeremys-chocolate" target="_blank" rel="noopener">California-based professor</a> who was just cleared to return to work after committing the cardinal sin of <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/most-popular-item-prof-under-fire-for-sharing-jeremys-chocolate-bars-says-students-loved-them" target="_blank" rel="noopener">handing out chocolate bars</a>.
Professor David Richardson, a man of substance and excellent taste, was suspended from Madera Community College in May 2023 after he laid out a table of snacks for students which included a selection of <a href="https://www.jeremysrazors.com/collections/jeremys-chocolate?utm_campaign=chocolate&amp;utm_medium=editorial&amp;utm_source=dw-site&amp;utm_content=na_sweetvictory" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Jeremy’s Chocolate</a>. Though many of his students didn’t recognize this act of heroism for what it was, one disgruntled colleague – who identifies as transgender – was predictably offended and reported Richardson’s actions to the administration. 
Considering this happened in California, and considering the political leanings of almost every institution of higher learning in the country, it would be logical to assume that Richardson, who taught at the college for 30 years, would lose his job over this. But just when all hope was lost, a light shined through.
The chocolate-loving prof is back, baby.
“I am happy and grateful to be back for all the faculty, staff and students who supported me while I was in exile. I wouldn’t have made it without them. But there is a new normal. I know there were a lot of people on the other side who wanted nothing more than to see me never come back,” Richardson said of his return, per <a href="https://www.thecollegefix.com/suspended-jeremys-chocolates-professor-cleared-returns-to-classroom/">The College Fix</a>.
Richardson, who is both gay and conservative, was drawn not just to the deliciousness of <a href="https://www.jeremysrazors.com/collections/jeremys-chocolate?utm_campaign=chocolate&amp;utm_medium=editorial&amp;utm_source=dw-site&amp;utm_content=na_sweetvictory" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Jeremy’s Chocolate</a>, but also the way these delectable candy bars aren’t afraid to declare the truth. Like humans, the candy is <a href="https://www.jeremysrazors.com/collections/jeremys-chocolate?utm_campaign=chocolate&amp;utm_medium=editorial&amp;utm_source=dw-site&amp;utm_content=na_sweetvictory" target="_blank" rel="noopener">available in two varieties</a>: He/Him and She/Her, one with nuts and one without. They were made in response to a Hershey’s featuring a man as one of the faces of its “SHE” bar on the first day of Women’s History Month.

The professor’s colleague claimed the chocolate brand’s messaging is “transphobic.” That staffer made no mention of how the candy quickly became the most popular item on the snack table once students realized what it was. 
Ultimately, Richardson was “fully exonerated” after an investigation following the Title IX complaint filed against him. Madera Community College spokesman Cory Burkarth declined to comment on the matter, saying the institution didn’t comment on personnel decisions.
This incident proves that not everyone who stands up to leftists gets defeated, even in a completely indoctrinated field such as academia.

Colleges and universities are accredited on the backs of their faculty, on their degrees and academic achievements. But what if the qualifications that secure college and university accreditation instead secured accreditation for individual scholars, allowing them to offer accredited courses as private-practice professors, thereby opening the door to a host of free market innovations? With some imagination, this simple but radical innovation could mark a path for true education reform.
Several years back, I decided it was time for my teenage daughter to study philosophy. Being a philosophy professor, I was able to offer the necessary instruction. I determined that she would take my standard Introduction to Philosophy class one night a week. I was confident in her intellectual abilities, so there was no need for a new curriculum; I’d use the syllabus, assignments, and lectures I had developed for college freshmen.
Word quickly spread through our community. Several homeschooling parents reached out to me, asking if their high school son or daughter might join the class — adding quickly that they’d pay me. I had no objection to others joining us, but I warned that their child would not receive college credit; I’m just teaching the class in my living room.
This warning, however, raised a question for me: Why not? I had just taught the exact same class one mile down the road at the local university. Had my daughter taken the class there, she would’ve received college credit. Why could she, or any other student, not receive college credit for the exact same class taught in my living room?
I realize the answer is that the university is an accredited entity, and I’m not. But this, too, struck me as strange. Thinking back on when my prior university was up for accreditation renewal, the accreditors reviewed my credentials. It was my degrees, my publications — and those of my colleagues — that secured their accreditation. Yet, upon leaving, the university kept the accreditation; I did not.
My fateful homeschool class also cast light on some surprising economics. Having never handled the fees for my own classes, I had no idea what to charge. Five hundred dollars seemed like a lot, but I knew it was a far cry from what parents would typically pay for a college course — nearly $2,500 on average. So they gladly accepted the price tag.
I began to run numbers. Were I to teach this class as an adjunct at a college, I would receive only $3,000 — a pretty standard rate. With only six students, I could match this fee. Yet, I’ve rarely taught an intro class with fewer than 20 students. Such a crop in this independent context would earn me $10,000, all while offering the students a heavy discount. Naturally, my wheels got turning about how easy it would be to exceed my roughly $50K annual salary with equal or less teaching than my typical eight-course annual teaching load.
But the challenge, again, was that my credentials secured accreditation for the university, not me. So arose in my mind a proposal for education reform. What if accreditation followed the scholar, not the university? What if, just as we have licensed counselors and attorneys and physicians, we had private-practice professors — accredited scholars in various disciplines?
On this proposal, scholars could offer accredited courses in their discipline to anyone they wish. Such a shift would create a college alternative. The proposal would not eliminate the distinction between credentialed experts and novices. It would only remove from universities the sole power to bestow credentials and hand that power to the experts in the field. One need not attend a university to study a discipline; he could, instead, study under the experts of his choosing in order to achieve mastery and attain credentials.
Not only does the proposal have a commonsense ring to it, but it opens rather interesting free market possibilities to address the rising cost of higher education and pave the way for innovation.
 Consider a few possibilities.
<h4>Competitive Pricing</h4>
 Some scholars will inevitably be more sought after than others, and such experts could charge exorbitant fees for classes. The market would thereby provide upward financial possibilities for scholars that presently do not exist. Scholars who turn into public intellectuals often find avenues for financial gain, but the typical scholar who grinds away at building a body of research rarely does. Neither journal articles nor scholarly books pay, and universities rarely diverge from standard pay-by-rank models. Yet a reputable scholar whose work is known and insights coveted could set prices reflective of demand.
By contrast, the young, hungry, newly credentialed scholar could offer low prices to build his client base and reputation. Prospective students could decide for themselves what the class is worth. If cost is most important, they can take the untried scholar. If the established scholar is more important, they can pay the premium.
<h4>Income-Based Discounts</h4>
Such a model makes it easy for the government to incentivize tuition breaks. If tax breaks were offered to scholars for discounts to students from a certain income bracket, for example, such breaks would incentivize scholars to take on, at discounted rates, students from low-income families.
<h4>Innovation</h4>
We have already seen how COVID forced the world to rethink in-person instruction. The private-practice professor may invite similar innovations. Such scholars could determine whether they wish to teach over Zoom, travel from home to home, invite students into a common space, or teach onsite at historical locations. The proposal also opens the door to virtual schools. By “virtual,” I do not mean digital but cooperative cohorts of scholars. Independent scholars could very easily create a network that becomes a virtual university, one where students of one scholar know they will find like-minded scholars in other disciplines through his network.
<h4>Ancillary Industry</h4>
 Such innovation likely opens the doors to other business ventures. Just as office space rental has become viable post-COVID, for example, the rental of teaching space could become rather popular. I can also imagine a new insurance need. Just as medical professionals need malpractice insurance, independent scholars would not have the usual legal cover supplied by universities and may want some kind of liability coverage.
Worth noting is the current glut of PhDs unable to find teaching jobs. Higher education has, for years now, been granting graduate degrees to students at a rate disproportional to job openings. I remember applying for a position in 2014 and learning I was one of 400-plus candidates! I got the job, but a great many young scholars are unable to find a university at which to teach. This is a problem only because their credentials do not allow them to teach independently in any recognized way. This proposal opens the door for innovation among these hungry scholars eager to make a name for themselves and earn a living.
Undoing the norm is difficult, of course. Several obvious challenges come to mind. I expect accrediting entities would face heavy pressure from universities to resist this proposal. Hence, this innovation in higher education is likely to face an uphill battle.
There’s also the challenge of degree granting. It’s one thing to accumulate a series of accredited classes, but who will determine that someone merits a degree? And who will grant that degree?
I anticipate worries about oversight. Who holds these independent scholars accountable? How do we make sure they don’t simply sell credits without teaching or requiring work from students?
Such questions are fair but not insurmountable. Perhaps independent scholars might band together to form their own accrediting body.
As for degrees, perhaps cohorts of scholars or their accrediting bodies might become degree granting entities. Or maybe universities could serve as umbrella schools (for a fee), offering degrees to those who fulfill requirements from scholars approved by their accreditor.
As for oversight, perhaps accrediting bodies can serve this function. Just as one can complain to the American Bar Association about legal malpractice, so one could do the same with accreditors for private-practice professors.
Again, the proposal is not without its challenges. Yet, with some imagination, solutions can be crafted. We already have precedents in medicine, law, and counseling. Moreover, we’re in a time when the cost-benefit value of higher education faces serious skepticism, and yet typical proposals for education reform rarely move the needle. A proposal of this kind may offer the sort of revolutionary yet commonsensical shift that can bring about a true change in higher education as the free market does its work.

The shooter who <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/several-people-shot-at-unlv-suspect-is-deceased" target="_blank" rel="noopener">murdered three people</a> and injured a fourth person at the University of Nevada Las Vegas on Wednesday was identified as a professor who recently applied for a job at the school, according to police sources. 
Around 11:45 a.m., the shooter made his way to the fourth floor of Beam Hall, UNLV’s business school, where he opened fire. The gunman then went to “multiple floors” before he was taken down by officers when he was outside the building, <a href="https://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/live-blog/unlv-shooting-las-vegas-live-updates-rcna128402" target="_blank" rel="noopener">according</a> to Las Vegas Police Sheriff Kevin McMahill.
The gunman, a 67-year-old man who had previously worked as an associate professor for 15 years at East Carolina University, had applied for a job at UNLV but didn’t get it, police sources said, according to <a href="https://abcnews.go.com/US/unlv-suspected-shooter-identified-sources/story?id=105448262" target="_blank" rel="noopener">ABC News</a>. Authorities said the shooter — who will not be named by The Daily Wire per company policy — was killed in a shootout with two police detectives who responded to the shooting. 
“If it hadn’t been for the heroic actions of one of those police officers who responded, there could have been countless additional lives taken,” McMahill <a href="https://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/live-blog/unlv-shooting-las-vegas-live-updates-rcna128402" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a>, adding that “armed confrontation of the suspect by law enforcement stopped the suspect’s further actions.” 
The three people killed were faculty and staff, according to investigators, which suggests to them that the shooting could have likely been a targeted attack. The 67-year-old shooter armed himself with a handgun and fired at police after killing the three victims and wounding a fourth. The injured victim was initially listed as being in critical condition but is now stable, police said.
According to the gunman’s LinkedIn account, he was a “semi-retired university professor” who graduated from Radford University in Virginia with a double major in mathematics and statistics, The New York Post <a href="https://nypost.com/2023/12/07/news/unlv-mass-shooting-suspect-idd-as-anthony-polito-professor-who-failed-to-get-job-at-school/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reported</a>. He then went on to get a masters degree at Duke University and a doctorate of Philosophy from the University of Georgia.

Authorities have already searched the shooter’s home in Henderson, Nevada, which is around 15 miles southeast of Las Vegas. Detectives found the gunman’s phone and some of his writings which they are investigating for more clues shedding light on the motive for the attack.

A Left-wing Manhattan college professor entered a plea deal to avoid jail time with prosecutors Monday after she was <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/far-left-professor-holds-machete-to-reporters-neck-threatens-to-kill-him-chases-him-down-street" target="_blank" rel="noopener">caught on camera</a> threatening a New York Post reporter with a machete. 
Shellyne Rodriguez, a former professor at Hunter College, was caught on camera holding a machete up to a reporter’s neck while threatening to “chop” him. Rodriguez threatened and chased Reuven Fenton after he came to her home to ask her about an incident where the leftist professor was caught on camera cursing at pro-life students at Hunter College. 
The 46-year-old professor pleaded guilty to a count of menacing, a misdemeanor, and to a harassment violation, The New York Post <a href="https://nypost.com/2023/10/02/nyc-college-professor-who-threatened-post-reporter-gets-off-with-counseling-in-plea-deal/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reported</a>. Rodriguez’s plea deal will require her to go to counseling at the Alternative Wellness Collective of Manhattan, and if she stays out of trouble with the law for up to a year, her record will be wiped clean. Rodriguez initially pleaded not guilty to charges of harassment, menacing, and weapons possession before prosecutors worked out the plea deal.
“The terms are no new arrests before final sentencing, which will be a completion or after a completion of behavioral modification therapy no shorter than six months and no longer than 12 months,” Judge Dan Quart told her. 
Rodriguez arrived at court on Monday with a group of supporters who shielded her from cameras with their umbrellas and jackets. She didn’t make any comments to the press when she left following her hearing. 
In early May, the professor was seen on video cursing at students at Hunter College who had set up a booth with pro-life materials. 
“This is bulls***. This is violent. You’re triggering my students,” Rodriguez said before throwing some of the pro-life materials on the ground.

After the professor’s tirade made headlines, Fenton went to ask Rodriguez some questions at her home. Video of that meeting showed Rodriguez opening her apartment door to the Post reporter and a photographer who was with him before threatening them with a machete. 
“Get the f*** away from my door, or I’m gonna chop you up with this machete!” she yelled as she put the machete right up next to his neck. “Get the f*** away from my door! Get the f*** away from my door!”
Fenton and the photographer left the building but were followed by Rodriguez who was still holding the machete. Rodriguez then chased the photographer, yelling, “Get the f*** off the block! Get the f*** out of here, yo!”
A spokesperson for Hunter College later told the newspaper that she had been fired.
“Hunter College strongly condemns the unacceptable actions of Shellyne Rodriguez and has taken immediate action,” he said. “Rodriguez has been relieved of her duties at Hunter College effective immediately, and will not be returning to teach at the school.”
Last month, Rodriguez was <a href="https://nypost.com/2023/09/28/nyc-professor-shellyne-rodriguez-threatened-to-chop-post-reporter-with-machete-gets-new-teaching-gig/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">hired</a> as an adjunct instructor at the Cooper Union and appeared on the schedule as a teacher for a sculpture class, according to the Post. Some students at Cooper Union decried the college&#8217;s hiring of Rodriguez, <a href="https://nypost.com/2023/09/28/co-eds-shocked-nyc-college-hired-machete-wielding-prof-shellyne-rodriguez/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">saying</a> it was &#8220;scary&#8221; and &#8220;crazy.&#8221;

A professor at an art college in New York City was caught on video cursing at pro-life students and shoving their educational materials off of a display table.
Shellyne Rodriguez, 46, an adjunct assistant professor at Hunter College who also teaches at the School of Visual Arts in New York City, confronted pro-life students in early May as they stood behind their display.
“You&#8217;re not educating s***,” Rodriguez taunted. “This is f***ing propaganda. What are you going to do, like, anti-trans next? Is that what you’re gonna do next?”
“We are talking about abortion,” a male pro-life student responded quietly.
“This is bulls***. This is violent. You&#8217;re triggering my students,” Rodriguez claimed.
“I’m sorry about that,” the student replied.
“No, you’re not,” Rodriguez, who has <a href="https://asapjournal.com/two-readings-on-mistaken-identity-shellyne-rodriguez/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">called herself</a> a “Black Marxist,”  declared. “Because you can&#8217;t even have a f***ing baby. Richardson told Turley he has been suspended, banned from &#8220;non-public spaces&#8221; on campus, and denied access to his email as the school investigates him for “serious misconduct.” 
Richardson, who has been teaching for 33 years, said that a staff member &#8220;started taking pictures&#8221; of the candy bars and &#8220;kept trying to bait me,&#8221; but nothing happened until he received a letter Monday, Just The News <a href="https://justthenews.com/nation/free-speech/gay-professor-placed-leave-sharing-chocolate-affirms-biology-sex-he-says">reported</a>.
Treating students to the chocolate bars sold by The Daily Wire created a “hostile work environment,” according to college officials, who claimed it constituted harassment and discrimination against colleagues “based on gender.” 
Richardson is already in the middle of a lawsuit against the State Center Community College District, which he sued after it sanctioned him for his behavior during a mandatory “pronoun etiquette&#8221; seminar that was led by a trans-identifying professor in October 2021, according to Just The News.

It&#8217;s almost spring cleaning time, but according to one college <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/professor" target="_blank" rel="noopener">professor</a>, cleaning your pantry is <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/racism" target="_blank" rel="noopener">racist</a> and <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/sexism" target="_blank" rel="noopener">sexist</a>.
A viral TikTok trend has emerged where users share their well-organized refrigerators and pantry closets. But Loyola University Chicago marketing professor <a href="https://www.luc.edu/quinlan/faculty/jennadrenten.shtml" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Jenna Drenten</a> wrote in <a href="https://theconversation.com/pantry-porn-on-tiktok-and-instagram-makes-obsessively-organized-kitchens-a-new-status-symbol-197517" target="_blank" rel="noopener">The Conversation</a> criticizing the trend, which she dubbed &#8220;pantry porn,&#8221; for glamorizing and stylizing home organization. Drenten then said that the trend was similar to the desire for niceness, which was rooted in racism and sexism.
&#8220;In today’s consumer culture, &#8216;a place for everything and everything in its place&#8217; isn’t just a mantra; it’s big business. Nowhere is this more evident than the kitchen pantry,&#8221; Drenten wrote. &#8220;As someone who studies digital consumer culture, I’ve noticed an uptick in glamorized, stylized and fully stocked pantries on TikTok and Instagram, giving rise to a content genre I dub &#8216;pantry porn.’”
Drenten wrote about how pantries emerged as a status symbol in the 1800s, then became more common in middle-class homes in the 20th century, before becoming ubiquitous in modern times. She then said that modern celebrity culture has made the pantry a status symbol once again, while social media influencers have also stepped in to bring the status symbol back down to the masses.
Furthermore, &#8220;pantry porn&#8221; stems from the early social media phenomenon of &#8220;food porn,&#8221; highly glamorized pictures of cooking and eating food.
Having established the pantry as a status symbol, Drenten goes further. &#8220;Storing spices in coordinated glass jars and color coordinating dozens of sprinkles containers may seem trivial,&#8221; she said. &#8220;But tidiness is tangled up with status, and messiness is loaded with assumptions about personal responsibility and respectability. Cleanliness has historically been used as a cultural gatekeeping mechanism to reinforce status distinctions based on a vague understanding of ‘niceness’: nice people, with nice yards, in nice houses, make for nice neighborhoods.&#8221;
&#8220;What lies beneath the surface of this anti-messiness, pro-niceness stance is a history of classist, racist and sexist social structures,&#8221; she concluded. &#8220;In my research, influencers who produce pantry porn are predominantly white women who demonstrate what it looks like to maintain a ‘nice’ home by creating a new status symbol: the perfectly organized, fully stocked pantry.&#8221;
Drenten also claimed that the trend reinforces sexist tropes about the domestic housewife as a feminine ideal. &#8220;Magazines like Good Housekeeping were once the brokers of idealized domestic work,&#8221; she wrote. &#8220;Now online pantry porn sets the aspirational standard for becoming an ideal mom, ideal wife and ideal woman. This grew out of a shift toward an intensive mothering ideology that equates being a good mom with time-intensive, labor-intensive, financially expensive care work.”
&#8220;Sure, all of those baskets and bins serve a functional purpose in the home: seeing what you need, when you need it,&#8221; she added. &#8220;But the social pressure to curate a perfect pantry might make some women work overtime. Pantry porn, as a status symbol, relies on the promise of making daily domestic work easier. But if women are largely responsible for the work required to maintain the perfectly organized pantry, it’s critical to ask: easier for whom?&#8221;

While <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/colleges" target="_blank" rel="noopener">college</a> campuses are obsessing over &#8220;<a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/safe-spaces" target="_blank" rel="noopener">safe spaces</a>&#8221; and diversity, equity, and inclusion, one <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/professor" target="_blank" rel="noopener">professor</a> noticed that students are becoming less happy and much angrier.
Mary Gaitskill, a novelist who teaches creative writing courses as a visiting professor at several universities, made the observations in an article for the <a href="https://www.chronicle.com/article/the-trials-of-the-young?utm_source=Iterable&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_campaign=campaign_6350713_nl_Academe-Today_date_20230309&amp;cid=at&amp;source=&amp;sourceid=&amp;cid2=gen_login_refresh&amp;cid2=gen_login_refresh" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Chronicle of Higher Education</a>. Gaitskill said that despite constant efforts to make campuses &#8220;safe,&#8221; students in her classes, especially white males, are writing violent and degenerate fantasies, and many students have spent time in mental institutions.
&#8220;Anyone who isn’t living in off-grid isolation is aware of the tireless efforts by hyperconscious campus administrations to create classrooms where everyone feels safe and as few people as possible will be made &#8216;uncomfortable,&#8217; let alone unhappy,&#8221; Gaitskill wrote, citing &#8220;trigger warnings&#8221; and training modules about rape and sexual harassment as examples. The college she wrote about doubled down on these practices: including fewer white male authors on syllabi, more training modules, more anti-racist teacher trainings, and more language rules.
Most people, even those affected by real incidents of hate and discrimination, &#8220;might fairly mock the corrective apparatus&#8221; as &#8220;ridiculous&#8221; or &#8220;dictatorial,&#8221; Gaitskill added. &#8220;The deeper trouble is that it is ineffectual and confusing.&#8221; She pointed to an instance where a white male student used the phrase &#8220;toxic masculinity&#8221; without knowing what it meant; the student told her that he learned it at freshman orientation, and to him &#8220;it meant entitled men treating women badly.&#8221; This student did not take issue with the idea of &#8220;toxic masculinity.&#8221; But &#8220;less confident, less sophisticated young men — those with the most vulnerable self-esteem — might find it disconcerting to be told, no matter how sensitively it was put, that the trait that they have grown up considering desirable, their most basic default identity, is now toxic,&#8221; she wrote. &#8220;This does not seem to me a minor side effect.&#8221;
Gaitskill then recounted the stories of several students in her class. One student, Luke, approached her for permission to write a story about violent rape, murder, and necrophilia, in the first person. She rejected the idea because such horrific material would get administration involved, and she didn&#8217;t want that. But moreover, she told the student that it was hard to empathize with such violent individuals. “You’re completely wrong,” the student replied. “They do understand why they do it.” 
That student eventually wrote a story with graphic depictions of self-harm. Another student wrote an account of an attempted suicide that turned out to be autobiographical. In all, four of the eight students in her class wrote about suicide: two wrote about their own suicide attempts; two wrote about friends, one of whom died; one was written by a girl who had known four people in her home town who had attempted or committed suicide, and she was trying to understand them. In all cases, Gaitskill recounted that the stories were filled with despair, either directed at a particular social issue, or simply personal, but &#8220;vivid&#8221; and &#8220;intense.&#8221;
Gaitskill talked with a counselor who had been working with Luke. During their conversation, the counselor said that &#8220;mental-health issues were &#8216;through the roof,&#8217; that a number of students had already been sent home in that calendar year to receive care; in some cases, their parents had to be persuaded to accept them back.&#8221; The counselor also said that mental health had been declining for years. Gaitskill then provided a disturbing email Luke had sent to her. The counselor said the email wasn&#8217;t enough to act on. So Gaitskill offered to forward her the email. The counselor said no, “[b]ecause if I see it, I’ll have to do something.”
Gaitskill concluded that the students feel this way because they are constantly exposed to large-scale social issues, such as mass shootings, climate change, police brutality, disinformation, and others. Instead, they are looking for a sense of safety by fixating on problems they can control, such as offensive words, gender ideology, and toxic masculinity, even though the apparatus built around solving those problems offers no safety. &#8220;The only thing I can say for sure is that the young deserve better,&#8221; she wrote.

Former Congresswoman <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/liz-cheney" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Liz Cheney</a> has landed on her feet with a new job as a professor of politics at the University of Virginia.
The UVA Center for Politics announced the hire Wednesday. Cheney will become a professor of practice at the school and participate in both seminars and research. Cheney was one of the ten Republicans who voted to impeach former President Donald Trump in 2021. She was primaried out of her seat in the 2022 midterms.
“Preserving our constitutional republic is the most important work of our time, and our nation’s young people will play a crucial role in this effort,” Cheney said in the university&#8217;s <a href="https://news.virginia.edu/content/liz-cheney-serve-professor-practice-uva-center-politics" target="_blank" rel="noopener">news release</a>. “I look forward to working with students and colleagues at the center to advance the important work they and others at the University of Virginia are doing to improve the health of democracy here and around the world. I hope my work with the Center for Politics and the broader community at the University of Virginia will contribute to finding lasting solutions that not only preserve, but strengthen our democracy.&#8221;
As a professor, Cheney will give University-wide lectures, and serve as a guest lecturer in seminars with Center for Politics director Larry J. Sabato and other faculty. She will also contribute to the center&#8217;s research, and participate in university and community events. She will retain her position through the end of the fall 2023 semester, with an option to renew.
“With democracy under fire in this country and elsewhere around the world, Liz Cheney serves as a model of political courage and leadership,” Sabato added in the news release. “Liz will send a compelling message to students about integrity. She’s a true profile in courage, and she was willing to pay the price for her principles and democracy itself.”
“Our students will have an incredible opportunity to learn from Liz Cheney, who has fiercely defended democracy as part of a distinguished career,&#8221; University of Virginia President Jim Ryan added. &#8220;I’m delighted that she has chosen the University of Virginia and the Center for Politics as a next step, and I very much look forward to working with her.&#8221;

Cheney lost her seat in the 2022 Republican primary to a Trump-backed challenger, natural resources lawyer <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/breaking-liz-cheney-destroyed-in-wyoming-gop-primary-trump-responds" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Harriet Hageman</a>, in a 66%-29% blowout. Hageman went on to win the general election.

A university professor accused the popular <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/artificial-intelligence" target="_blank" rel="noopener">AI software</a> ChatGPT of fabricating an academic paper to push radical gender theory.
Nick Flor, a professor of information systems at the University of New Mexico, posted a tweet on Friday experimenting with the software, which has been shown to harbor a liberal bias. While chatting with the AI, it claimed that the belief that gender is complex is widely accepted by scientists, then cited a paper that didn’t exist to back up its claim. Flor accused the AI&#8217;s programmers of gaslighting the public to push radical gender theory. 
&#8220;ChatGPT claimed that today&#8217;s doctors &amp; scientists &#8216;widely accept&#8217; that gender is a complex concept,&#8221; Flor wrote on Twitter. &#8220;So I challenged ChatGPT to &#8216;cite a scientific paper.&#8217; And ChatGPT &gt;MADE UP A PAPER&lt;. That&#8217;s unethical of the AI Engineers behind chatGPT to gaslight the public. #EthicsInAI.&#8221;
He included a screenshot of the exchange, which reads:

The liberal bias of the chatbot has been well documented. Earlier this month, The Daily Wire <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/what-is-a-woman-heres-what-chatgpt-has-to-say" target="_blank" rel="noopener">asked the AI</a> the question posed by Matt Walsh&#8217;s blockbuster documentary, &#8220;What is a Woman?&#8221; ChatGPT initially responded that &#8220;[a] woman is an adult human female,&#8221; but began to lean into the idea that gender is not biological, but social and cultural, and that men can identify as women and undergo gender transition to live as a woman.
Twitter users also dissected the AI&#8217;s bias in regards to race. One <a href="https://twitter.com/cirnosad/status/1622407343358214146/photo/3" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Twitter user</a> tested the AI with a scenario of a demolition engineer attempting to disarm a nuclear bomb in a massively-populated city. The only way to disarm the bomb was to type in a nondescript racial slur. The chatbot obstinately refused, seeking multiple alternative solutions that did not involve &#8220;hate speech,&#8221; and ended up choosing to let the bomb detonate rather than utter a racial slur.
Daily Wire editor emeritus <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/ben-shapiro-reveals-what-we-really-need-to-fear-about-ai-chatbots" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Ben Shapiro</a> — on Tuesday&#8217;s episode of &#8220;The Ben Shapiro Show&#8221; — blasted the AI&#8217;s developers. “So what does this mean?” mused Shapiro. “It means that someone in the back room programmed ChatGPT to say that the absolute highest value in the hierarchy of values is you must never use a racial slur. There are no other higher values.”
The programmer is deciding what is moral and what is not and filtering it through “objective” artificial intelligence to give it a bizarre sheen of technological credibility, Shapiro said. Such a dramatic example likely underscores countless, more subtle ways the tool shades the information it spews to the left, he said.

A university professor is warning his administration, and universities across the country, that <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/artificial-intelligence" target="_blank" rel="noopener">AI chatbots</a> are the future of plagiarism.
In a <a href="https://www.facebook.com/title17/posts/pfbid0DSWaYQVwJxcgSGosS88h7kZn6dA7bmw5ziuRQ5br2JMJcAHCi5Up7EJbJKdgwEZwl" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Facebook post</a> earlier this month, Furman University philosophy professor <a href="https://www.furman.edu/people/darren-hick/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Darren Hick</a> recounted his first experience with a student who attempted to use an artificial intelligence chat software to cheat on an assignment. Hick caught the student because the AI&#8217;s work was shoddy and lacked any substance of the course material. However, he said that would not always be the case, and Hick said that <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/universities" target="_blank" rel="noopener">universities</a> need to develop ways to stop the use of software to complete assignments.
&#8220;Today, I turned in the first plagiarist I’ve caught using A.I. software to write her work, and I thought some people might be curious about the details,&#8221; Hick wrote on Facebook. The student used an AI chat website called ChatGPT, where users generate prompts and scripts and an AI software generates human-like responses. The prompt the student was given, and that she gave to the software, was to write 500 words about the English philosopher David Hume&#8217;s paradox of horror.
&#8220;ChatGPT responds in seconds with a response that looks like it was written by a human—moreover, a human with a good sense of grammar and an understanding of how essays should be structured,&#8221; Hick wrote. &#8220;In my case, the first indicator that I was dealing with A.I. is that, despite the syntactic coherence of the essay, it made no sense. The essay confidently and thoroughly described Hume’s views on the paradox of horror in a way that was thoroughly wrong. It did say some true things about Hume, and it knew what the paradox of horror was, but it was just bulls***ing after that. To someone who didn’t know what Hume would say about the paradox, it was perfectly readable — even compelling. To someone familiar with the material, it raised any number of flags.&#8221;
The professor concluded that such plagiarism would be easy to spot in high-level philosophy courses where the material is obscure. But for lower-level classes or other disciplines like literature or political science, the software is a &#8220;game-changer.&#8221;
Fortunately, Hick knew about software that could detect the chatbot software, and ran a check of the student&#8217;s essay; the software found a near-certainty that the essay was fake. In experimenting with ChatGPT himself, Hick noticed some of the AI&#8217;s tendencies in composition that could help point out future chatbot-produced essays, but he noted that because the software is based on a neural network that is always learning, it will get better and harder to detect.
&#8220;Administrations are going to have to develop standards for dealing with these kinds of cases, and they’re going to have to do it FAST,&#8221; Hick concluded. &#8220;In my case, the student admitted to using ChatGPT, but if she hadn’t, I can’t say whether all of this would have been enough evidence. This is too new. But it’s going to catch on. It would have taken my student about 5 minutes to write this essay using ChatGPT. Expect a flood, people, not a trickle.&#8221;
Hick added that until his university develops a protocol to stop AI plagiarism, he will attempt to counter it in his own way by giving an impromptu oral exam to a student suspected of using similar software.
