A recent report from Christopher Rufo detailed the parts of Vice President <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/kamala-harris" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Kamala Harris</a>&#8216; 2009 book that appear to have been plagiarized — but according to a new report from The Washington Free Beacon, the story doesn&#8217;t end there.
A new report from the Free Beacon&#8217;s Aaron Sibarium showed that in 2007 — while she was the San Francisco District Attorney — Harris lifted text from a Republican state attorney and then presented it as her own when testifying before Congress on a loan repayment program for prosecutors.

Sibarium posted a lengthy thread to X along with screenshots of Logli&#8217;s testimony — from several months earlier — alongside Harris&#8217; testimony, which was submitted to the Senate Judiciary Committee in April.
&#8220;In 2007, Kamala Harris plagiarized pages of Congressional testimony from a Republican colleague. And in 2012, she plagiarized a fictionalized story about sex trafficking—but presented it as a real case. It&#8217;s not just one book; it&#8217;s a career-long pattern,&#8221; he began the thread.

According to Sibarium&#8217;s report, nearly 1,200 of the 1,500 words she submitted as her testimony matched Logli&#8217;s verbatim. He went on in the thread on X to lay out several other instances in which she had submitted work that was not her own, changing only minor details.

People are finally realizing exactly who Kamala Harris is.
What they are discovering for the first time, perhaps, is that she is completely vacuous. There is nothing there. Nothing. There has never been anything there.
Yesterday, Christopher Rufo, doing his usual yeoman investigative work, broke wide open the reality that Harris is an empty vessel and always was an empty vessel.
What he found is that Harris plagiarized at least a dozen sections of her criminal justice book, “Smart on Crime.”
She even lifted material directly from Wikipedia.
(The first rule of being smart on crime, by the way, is: Do not plagiarize from Wikipedia.)
I&#8217;ve written 11 books under my own name. I used to ghostwrite for a living, meaning I wrote books under other people&#8217;s names.
When you are writing factual books, very often you&#8217;re relying on media reports. You have to change the wording, and you have to footnote it. Those are just a few of the steps you must take.
You have to paraphrase, and then you have to footnote what you wrote. If you don&#8217;t do that, it&#8217;s plagiarism and stealing.

But Harris, apparently without dropping footnotes, just lifted entire paragraphs of text from, for example, the John Jay College of Criminal Justice, the Associated Press, and from Wikipedia.
Wikipedia is not a good source because it is a compendium of what other people have written about a topic. And the people doing the writing are just randos.
It&#8217;s not as if someone had written a peer-reviewed book or something equivalent.

“The allegedly plagiarized sections came from a Bureau of Justice Assistance report in 2000, an Urban Institute report in 2004, a John Jay College of Criminal Justice press release describing a 2007 award, an Associated Press article in 2008, and a Wikipedia article’s wording in a 2008 iteration,” The New York Post <a href="https://nypost.com/2024/10/15/us-news/kamala-harris-book-publisher-directing-very-sensitive-plagiarism-questions-to-higher-ups/">reported</a>, adding, “Chronicle executive director of marketing and publicity Lauren Hoffman asked for all inquiries to be forwarded to her, with one employee on the email chain emphasizing that the accusations touched on ‘a very sensitive topic.’”
All of this underscores the fact that Harris has always been a giant nothing burger. There is nothing there.
You can see it every time she talks. It&#8217;s why she spins around in circles: There&#8217;s just nothing deeper.
We keep trying to scrape beneath the surface and find the deeper level of Kamala Harris. But perhaps it&#8217;s just deeper layers of emptiness. Perhaps it turns out that Harris’ core is just a gaping vacuum.
Even CNN <a href="https://www.cnn.com/2024/10/14/politics/kamala-harris-plagiarism-allegation/index.html">acknowledged</a> that Harris had likely committed plagiarism, writing, “CNN reviewed several of the passages highlighted by Rufo and found that Harris and O’C. Hamilton failed to properly attribute language to sources.”
Why does this matter?
Because this is who Kamala Harris is.
Vacuous and empty.

The New York Times on Monday attempted <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2024/10/14/us/christopher-rufo-kamala-harris-book.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">to downplay</a> evidence that Vice President Kamala Harris <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/kamala-harris-plagiarized-sections-of-2009-book-report" target="_blank" rel="noopener">plagiarized</a> sections of her 2009 book “Smart on Crime.”
The Times repeatedly suggested that only “five sections” or “passages” from the book were plagiarized, citing a plagiarism “expert” who said the passages amounted “to an error and not an intent to defraud.”
Chris Rufo, the conservative activist who <a href="https://christopherrufo.com/p/kamala-harriss-plagiarism-problem" target="_blank" rel="noopener">brought attention</a> to the plagiarism which was first <a href="https://plagiatsgutachten.com/blog/plagiarism-by-kamala-harris/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">discovered</a> by Austrian “Plagiarism Hunter” Stefan Weber, took to X on Monday afternoon to debunk the Times article. Rufo provided emails sent to Times reporter Stephanie Saul, one of three authors of the article, the headline of which reads: “Conservative Activist Seizes on Passages From Harris Book.”
“The Times claims that I only argued that Kamala Harris plagiarized ‘five sections’ involving ‘about 500 words,’” Rufo wrote. “But this isn&#8217;t true. In my story, I wrote that Stefan Weber argued there are ‘more than a dozen’ instances of ‘vicious plagiarism.’ This past Saturday, I provided the Times not only with my written analysis, which argues that there are ‘more than a dozen,’ but with Weber&#8217;s full dossier, which included 18 allegations of varying severity.”
“So, the Times deliberately withheld this crucial contextual information from its readers and from the supposed plagiarism expert, who, based on this limited information, called it ‘not serious,’” Rufo continued. “They could have easily confirmed the &#8220;more than a dozen&#8221; point, but instead, lied by omission.”

Rufo also criticized the Times for claiming “none of the passages in question took the ideas or thoughts of another writer.” Rufo argued that reasoning was “preposterous.”
“Harris not only copied multiple paragraphs of other people&#8217;s work verbatim, but she often lifted those ideas directly and at face value,” Rufo said. “In one case, she came to the wrong conclusion because she copied Wikipedia—i.e., she stole a bad idea, copied the language verbatim, and got the point wrong.”

The Times consulted Jonathan Bailey, a plagiarism consultant, who told the outlet that Rufo had taken a relatively small amount of the book and was trying to “make a big deal of it.”
But on X, Bailey addressed concerns by saying he had “NOT performed a full analysis of the book,” adding that his comments “were based on information provided to me by the reporters and spoke only about those passages.”

The authors of the Times article did not respond to a Daily Wire inquiry prior to press time.
The Times&#8217; handling of Harris&#8217; plagiarism is markedly different than how it handled allegations of plagiarism against Republican Sen. Rand Paul of Kentucky. When Paul was found to have plagiarized passages, the Times published at <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2013/10/31/us/politics/senator-rand-paul-is-accused-of-plagiarizing-his-lines-from-wikipedia.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">least</a> <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2013/11/05/us/politics/senator-rand-paul-faces-new-charges-of-plagiarism.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">three</a> <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2013/11/06/us/politics/after-plagiarism-charges-paul-announces-office-restructuring.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">stories</a> on the matter and one <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2013/11/08/opinion/plagiarism-and-rand-paul.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">opinion piece</a>. In each example, the word &#8220;plagiarism&#8221; was used in some form in the headline.
As The Daily Wire <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/publisher-in-damage-control-mode-after-report-detailing-kamalas-alleged-plagiarism" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reported</a> on Monday, the publisher of Harris’ book, Chronicle Books, appears to be in “damage-control mode” after accidentally sending Rufo an email from a higher-up.
Rufo posted a screenshot of the email to X, which showed Chronicle’s VP Lauren Hoffman telling staff that all inquiries about the book need to go through her.

The president of the University of Maryland will face an internal probe after The Daily Wire exposed extensive plagiarism in his published writing.
On Wednesday evening, Darryll Pines sent an email to all university faculty under the subject “A forthcoming impartial review.”
&#8220;Just yesterday, a blogger contended that I co-authored papers in 2002 and 2006 on the topic of structural health monitoring that used language from an online tutorial without citation,&#8221; Pines wrote. &#8220;While I am steadfast that our results, data and findings are sound, I acknowledge recurrent language in the introductory sections.”
“While I do not believe there is merit to these claims, an impartial review is in the best interest of the university. Consistent with existing policies related to research conduct, I have asked the Office of Research Integrity (ORI) to begin an independent review. The findings of the ORI review will be shared with the University System of Maryland Chancellor Jay Perman through our Office of Faculty Affairs in the Provost’s Office,” the email continued.
The email is somewhat contradictory, as Pines acknowledges “recurrent language,&#8221; but denies that he plagiarized outright.

On Tuesday, The Daily Wire identified <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/university-of-maryland-president-copied-rocket-science-paper-from-aussie-student" target="_blank" rel="noopener">a 1,500-word section of a 5,000-word paper</a> published in 2002 which Pines had lifted from a <a href="https://web.archive.org/web/19970216154235/http://www.monash.edu.au/cmcm/wavelet/whistory.htm" target="_blank" rel="noopener">tutorial website created by an Australian student in 1996.</a> Pines only changed the British-style spellings.
Pines and his co-author published another paper using the exact same stolen language in a 2006 paper.
Prior to the publication of The Daily Wire’s story, a spokeswoman for Pines seemed to defend the duplicated text, also calling it “recurrent language” and saying “the use of customary or common language in introductory material does not speak to the integrity of the data or the veracity of the findings.”
That drew shock and outrage from several academics, who said that no academic would consider 1,500 straight words pasted from an un-cited, little-unknown author to be “customary or common language,” or acceptable to use in a paper.
Online, some students speculated that if Pines was not punished, students punished for academic dishonesty would have grounds to contest their punishments.
Reporting on the fallout, The <a href="https://www.thebaltimorebanner.com/education/higher-education/university-of-maryland-darryll-j-pines-ZUVIHYS4Z5EFJIY7BUSVFGY6XA/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Baltimore Banner</a> quoted SPIE, an engineering society that published the 2002 paper, saying it “considers plagiarism by authors and contributors in any form, to any degree, to be unethical, unacceptable, and a serious breach of professional conduct.”
It also quoted Jonathan Bailey, a “plagiarism expert,” who seemed to both acknowledge that the plagiarism was real and major, but dismiss it because the media outlet flagging it was not liberal. 
The evidence against Pines “appears to be one of the stronger” cases, he said, saying “we have whole sections of a paper that are near verbatim or verbatim.”
Yet “the uptick in plagiarism accusations over the last year has targeted people of color, in particular,” the Banner claimed, paraphrasing Bailey.
(The Daily Wire did not look into Pines because he is black, but because of an incident this month in which he falsely <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/university-of-maryland-president-plagiarized-from-chatgpt-to-justify-anti-israel-oct-7-rally" target="_blank" rel="noopener">passed off ChatGPT output</a> as original Maryland &#8220;faculty scholarship.&#8221;)
“Bailey said as someone who ‘cares deeply about plagiarism,’ he finds the accusations frustrating for both himself and universities that have to investigate serious allegations even when they come from, as Bailey views it, a place of bad faith,” the Banner continued.
The paper did not say why reporting on academic misconduct was “bad faith,” except that “The Daily Wire is a conservative publication who often rail against diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives,” seemingly suggesting that standards should not apply to scholars like Pines, a rocket scientist who this year co-authored  papers titled &#8220;Stereotypes and implicit biases in engineering: Will students need to &#8216;Whistle Vivaldi&#8217;?&#8221; and &#8220;Understanding the ‘Us All’ in Engineering 4 Us All through the Experiences of High School Teachers.&#8221;

University of Maryland President Acknowledges ‘Recurrent Language,’ Submits To Plagiarism Review

University of Maryland President Darryll Pines appears to have committed significant plagiarism, lifting large portions of two academic journal articles from a tutorial website made years prior by an Australian student, a Daily Wire investigation found.
A 1,500-word stretch of a 5,000-word paper by Pines and a co-author published in 2002 — accounting for nearly a third of the paper — is virtually identical to a <a href="https://www.dmsa.unipd.it/andreap/wavelet/wavelet.htm" target="_blank" rel="noopener">tutorial website</a> called “Surfing the Wavelets” published in 1996 by Joshua Altmann, who at the time of publishing was a university student in Australia.
Pines does not cite or mention Altmann or the website, which says it was last updated in October 1996. Pines and his co-author, Liming Salvino, then recycled much of that paper, including almost all the uncredited Altmann language, for another peer-reviewed paper in 2006.
Pines, a rocket scientist and diversity activist, does not appear to have made any changes to Altmann’s work except removing some sentences and Americanizing the Australian’s British spelling (turning “analyse&#8221; to &#8220;analyze,&#8221; e.g.) — but Pines missed two such words, “endeavour” and “modelling,” which remain in his work with the spelling commonly used abroad.
Pines&#8217;s systematic editing of British words suggests he did copy the language, but deliberately manipulated Altmann’s text to look like his own. The finding of significant past plagiarism comes after Pines this month presented what he said was “faculty research” defending a pro-Palestine rally planned for October 7, but which actually came from ChatGPT.

When Altmann published the tutorial in 1996, he had recently been working in a restaurant and was a student at Monash University in Melbourne, Australia. At the time, Pines had a doctorate from MIT and was leading a University of Maryland program “to increase the number of underrepresented minority PhDs in four departments within the College of Engineering.&#8221;
Another scientist cited Altmann’s online tutorial in his Ph.D. dissertation in <a href="https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/d/d2/Acoustic_noise_removal_by_combining_wiener_and_wavelet_filtering_techniques_%28IA_acousticnoiserem00forn%29.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">1998</a>.

Pines’s <a href="https://www.researchgate.net/publication/252446892_Health_monitoring_of_one_dimensional_structures_using_empirical_mode_decomposition_and_the_Hilbert-Huang_Transform" target="_blank" rel="noopener">2002 paper</a>, “Health monitoring of one dimensional structures using empirical mode decomposition and the Hilbert-Huang Transform,” was published in the journal Smart Structures and Materials, part of the SPIE engineering association.
In 2006, Pines and Salvino reused a large portion of that paper — including nearly the entire uncredited Altmann section — for a <a href="https://www.researchgate.net/publication/223597065_Structural_health_monitoring_using_empirical_mode_decomposition_and_the_Hilbert_phase" target="_blank" rel="noopener">paper</a> published in the Journal of Sound and Vibration, “Structural health monitoring using empirical mode decomposition and the Hilbert phase.” The above chart looks almost the same whether comparing Altmann to Pines’s 2002 or 2006 papers.
Where Altmann writes the word “endeavor,” Pines’s 2002 article says “endevour,” as if someone tried to Americanize the Australian’s British-style language but removed the wrong letter. The 2006 article also mirrors Altmann’s language in using the British “modelling,” though the 2002 article does not, perhaps because an editor at that journal changed it to the American “modeling.”
Pines&#8217; papers do not contain any footnotes to Altmann. Instead, his footnotes are the same as Altmann&#8217;s, down to the page numbers.
In virtually the only instance where Pines tried to paraphrase, he managed to add multiple errors. Altmann writes, “Several techniques can be used to enhance the characteristics that are otherwise not readily observable.” Pines’s 2002 paper says “This led to the emergence of several techniques that could be used to enhance the characteristics that would otherwise not readily observable.” That passage in his 2006 paper has an additional inserted typo (one apparently again caught by the more vigilant 2002 editor), saying “This lead to the emergence.”
Katie Lawson, a spokeswoman for the University of Maryland, did not deny that the language was copied, but suggested there would be no repercussions for the president.
“It is not uncommon for historical and technical reviews to use recurrent language to provide a framework for past work. Establishing this shared understanding in the scientific community is what allows for applications of new technology, which is what Dr. Pines and Dr. Salvino explored in testing a new application of the Hilbert phase. The use of customary or common language in introductory material does not speak to the integrity of the data or the veracity of the findings,” she said in an email.
Lawson declined to respond to questions about whether University of Maryland students and faculty are required to cite their sources when using extensive verbatim work of others, and what would happen if they did not.
IEEE, a professional engineering society, says “Plagiarism includes, but is not limited to, (a) uncredited copying of someone else’s work, (b) using someone else’s material without clear delineation or citation, and (c) uncited reuse of an author’s previously published work that also involves other authors.” It said it “is a type of copyright infringement, and as such may also subject the author(s) to legal liability.&#8221;
<a href="https://pspb.ieee.org/images/files/PSPB/opsmanual.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">IEEE’s policies</a> say that it considers “uncredited verbatim copying of a large portion (greater than 20% and up to 50%) within an article” as its second-most serious offense. It said the actions that “shall” be taken in such a case include the publication of a “Notice for Publishing Misconduct,” rejection of all articles currently being reviewed by the author, and possible prohibition of future publishing.
The society recommends that the offender be required to submit an apology to the victim and the journal editor, with more severe punishment if he refuses.
The Daily Wire reported this month that Pines <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/university-of-maryland-president-plagiarized-from-chatgpt-to-justify-anti-israel-oct-7-rally" target="_blank" rel="noopener">plagiarized from ChatGPT</a> and passed the writing off as original research he had gathered from faculty experts. “I have consulted with Middle East Scholars and Historians on our campus regarding the origin and history of the Palestinian Flag. The general consensus opinion from these faculty scholars is as follows,” he wrote, followed by output that in reality came from ChatGPT.
He used the veneer of &#8220;expert scholarship&#8221; to end a debate with a Jewish critic who objected to his decision to allow a pro-Palestinian group that advocates for “armed struggle” to <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/u-of-maryland-prez-said-anti-israel-protesters-could-rally-on-10-7-then-threatened-to-call-police-on-jew-for-complaining" target="_blank" rel="noopener">hold an event on October 7</a>, the anniversary of Hamas’ attack on Israel. When The Daily Wire asked him about the false attribution, he ignored the inquiry.
Pines is credited with many journal articles and academic accomplishments, but his scientific achievements often come with him as just one member of a larger group. In the plagiarized articles, he is the lead author.
His journal articles co-authored this year include “Stereotypes and Implicit Biases in Engineering: Will Students Need to ‘Whistle Vivaldi’?” and “Understanding the ‘Us All’ in Engineering 4 Us All through the Experiences of High School Teachers.”
Pines’s story is similar to that of former Harvard president Claudine Gay, who resigned following the exposure of her own plagiarism. Both Pines and Gay came under fire for their handling of anti-Semitism on campus, and were uncovered as plagiarists in the ensuing scrutiny.

University of Maryland President Copied Rocket Science Paper From Aussie Student

University of Maryland President Darryll J. Pines defended his decision to allow anti-Israel protesters to rally on the anniversary of October 7 with what he said was original &#8220;faculty research&#8221; that proves that the Palestinian flag does not support terrorism. But the &#8220;research&#8221; was actually copied from ChatGPT, The Daily Wire found.
Pines passed off the text in an effort to justify his decision to allow the university&#8217;s chapter of Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP) to reserve a main campus quad on the <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/university-of-maryland-will-let-anti-israel-group-hold-oct-7-rally">anniversary</a> of Hamas&#8217;s attack on Israel to &#8220;honor&#8221; the “martyrs.” Pines sent the text in response to an email from a Maryland resident who inquired if Pines, who is black, would be as supportive of groups flying the Confederate Flag on campus as he is of flying the Palestine flag.
“I have consulted with Middle East Scholars and Historians on our campus regarding the origin and history of the Palestinian Flag. The general consensus opinion from these faculty scholars is as follows,&#8221; Pines wrote.
The four paragraphs that followed — punctuated by a curt “I will not be responding to any further inquiries on this matter” — did not come from faculty scholars, but rather directly from the artificial intelligence service ChatGPT, after being modified to be more pro-Palestinian.
Pines wrote in his first paragraph that “The Palestinian flag is not generally considered a symbol of hate but rather a symbol of national identity, aspiration, and the struggle for statehood and self-determination,” though it “can be viewed differently depending on one&#8217;s perspective.”
When The Daily Wire asked ChatGPT “Is the Palestinian flag a symbol of hate?” the first paragraph of its response said that “its interpretation can vary widely depending on one&#8217;s perspective. For many Palestinians and their supporters, the flag is a symbol of identity, resistance, and the aspiration for statehood and self-determination.”
Pines wrote, and underlined, that “For Palestinians, the flag is a powerful symbol of their quest for self-determination, statehood, and the right to return.”
When ChatGPT was asked “Is the Palestinian flag a symbol of hate or national identity,” it said “For Palestinians, the flag is a powerful symbol of their national identity and cultural heritage. It represents their history, aspirations, and desire for self-determination and statehood.”
ChatGPT does not answer questions the same way each time, but reuses certain phrases. Almost all of the exact phrases in Pines’ email appeared in various orders and permutations when The Daily Wire asked similar questions, or the same question multiple times. The overall structure and tone of the answer is also unmistakably artificial intelligence. That makes it very likely that the text came from ChatGPT, and likely that the AI answer generated at the University of Maryland hewed even more closely to Pines’ email than The Daily Wire&#8217;s attempts to replicate it.

His response contained a sentence about how the flag &#8220;was formally adopted by the Palestinian Liberation Organization (PLO) in 1964” (the PLO is a US-designated terror-supporting organization) and has “horizontal black, white, and green stripes with a red triangle on the left.”
ChatGPT says the flag “was adopted by the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) in 1964” and has “horizontal black, white, and green stripes with a red triangle on the hoist side.”
Pines&#8217;s original writing and alterations stand out because they are often grammatically incorrect or poorly written. In addition to the unusual capitalization of “Middle East Scholars and Historians on our campus,” Pines added transitional words like &#8220;thus,&#8221; which appear out of place.
ChatGPT concludes: “In summary, while the Palestinian flag can be seen as a symbol of resistance and national identity for Palestinians, its interpretation can be influenced by various political and ideological perspectives. It&#8217;s important to approach such symbols with an understanding of the broader historical and political contexts in which they are used.”
“Thus, the Palestinian flag is primarily a symbol of Palestinian national identity, statehood, and the struggle for self-determination,&#8221; Pines&#8217;s message ends. &#8220;It is not inherently a symbol of hate but is deeply connected to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, and thus its meaning can be interpreted differently depending on one&#8217;s political stance. While it may be perceived negatively in certain contexts, especially in Israel, it is recognized globally as the flag of a people seeking statehood and international recognition.”
Pines said that he had personally “consulted” with multiple scholars, implying that he synthesized the “consensus opinion from these faculty scholars.” It is possible that a University of Maryland “Middle East Scholar” used ChatGPT to gather information that was supposedly in his area of expertise, and sent it to Pines representing it as his own work, with Pines then in turn positioning it as his own. Pines did not respond to questions from The Daily Wire.
Pines’s sympathies with pro-Palestinian elements on campus came to the fore after he responded to the Hamas terror attack and pro-Palestine uprisings on college campuses by forming a “MD Joint Presidential-University Senate Task Force on Antisemitism and Islamophobia,” co-chaired by the anti-Israel Muslim professor Shibley Telhami.
There is evidence that Pines is close with, and working closely with, Telhami, including his personal response to the mother of a university student who objected to the anti-Israel views held by task force members.
“It’s LUDICROUS that someone who holds hateful views towards Israel (only democracy in the Middle East) and Jews is Chair of a Task Force on antisemitism,&#8221; the parent wrote to task force members. &#8220;Would you have a KKK Member on this Taskforce?”
Pines threatened to <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/u-of-maryland-prez-said-anti-israel-protesters-could-rally-on-10-7-then-threatened-to-call-police-on-jew-for-complaining" target="_blank" rel="noopener">call the police on her</a> for making “inappropriate” remarks. He added, &#8220;Members of our leadership team, and members of the Task Force care deeply about the safety and well being of every member of our campus community. Thus, the Task Force&#8217;s ongoing work is very important, and all of its members are deserving of our utmost respect and support.&#8221;
The mother had not included Pines on her emails, leading her to believe that Telhami enlisted him to respond.
Pines sent the ChatGPT information falsely attributed to &#8220;faculty scholarship&#8221; in an August 28 email to another Jewish resident who pressed him on the SJP rallies. His email also echoed SJP&#8217;s false claim that Israel has killed 150,000 people, and claimed SJP does not support terrorism.
SJP said on Instagram that it “unequivocally stands by international law as it outlaws the indiscriminate killing of civilians and establishes the <a href="https://www.instagram.com/p/C_WntvnPe2D/?img_index=5" target="_blank" rel="noopener">right of Palestinians to carry out armed struggle,</a>” and that it &#8220;unequivocally states that the Zionist state of Israel has <a href="https://www.instagram.com/p/C9yDEB3PJv6/?img_index=5" target="_blank" rel="noopener">no right to exist</a>.”

After The Daily Wire reported on the rally, and Pines’s refusal to cancel it despite the pleading of a campus rabbi, the University System of Maryland, which oversees all state public universities, intervened to ban all campus groups from hosting events on October 7. Pines then issued his own statement on the shutdown, implying that the university was cancelling the rally to protect pro-Palestinian protesters, even though he acknowledged that the police told him there was no evidence of threats to protesters.
Several university presidents have stepped down after enabling anti-Zionism on campus, which often fit with a broader leftist agenda against “colonialism.” One of those presidents, Harvard&#8217;s Claudine Gay, also resigned after journalists discovered she had plagiarized much of her academic writing.

University Of Maryland President Plagiarized From ChatGPT To Justify Anti-Israel Oct. 7 Rally

Jamaal Bowman, the <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/investigators-uncover-bowman-deception-in-fire-alarm-probe" target="_blank" rel="noopener">controversial</a> New York congressman, often appeals to his work as a former school principal and his Ed.D. in education as the basis for his policy positions.
But, according to our analysis, Bowman’s primary academic work — his 2019 <a href="https://www.proquest.com/openview/d593e623c894d5d70952589d37b5ac5f/1?pq-origsite=gscholar&amp;cbl=18750&amp;diss=y">dissertation</a>, “Community Schools: The Perceptions and Practices that Foster Broad-Based Collaboration among Leaders with the Community School Ecosystem” — is riddled with basic errors, failures of logic, and multiple instances of plagiarism. (Bowman did not return a request for comment.)
Bowman has <a href="https://x.com/JamaalBowmanNY/status/1239341511353012224" target="_blank" rel="noopener">boasted</a> about the paper on social media and considers it formative to his political orientation. When asked recently about his political views, Bowman <a href="https://freebeacon.com/democrats/jamaal-bowmans-closing-message-im-still-a-socialist-and-oct-7-was-israels-fault/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a>, “I identify as an educator, and as a Black man in America. But my policies align with those of a socialist, so I guess that makes me a socialist.”
The dissertation, which Bowman completed at Manhattanville College, says that “Black, Latinx, and poor White children have been historically oppressed throughout American history,” and as recompense makes an argument for “community schools,” a concept developed by the Brazilian Marxist pedagogist Paulo Freire, in which schools would be expanded to provide full-time government services for every aspect of society, including for adults.
The statistical work in the paper is limited, and the method primarily consisted of “qualitative” research, with Bowman interviewing 13 school administrators, activists, and parents. Each was immediately placed in a demographic box and assigned the role of oppressor or oppressed. For example, Bowman wrote that “Ms. Melendez, a parent leader at Manny Ramirez High School, was born in the Dominican Republican [sic]” and is a true member of the New York community, while “Ms. Warren, who identified racially as White, discussed being very aware of being ‘a visitor in someone else [sic] community all the time.’”
Bowman’s community schools model holds that the government, not parents, is responsible for children’s success. Bowman quotes one school official saying, “Families don’t have any deficits. If a mother is collecting welfare, so what?”
Bowman’s paper relies on large leaps of logic. His limited quantitative research contradicts his basic argument in favor of community schools.
For example, Bowman looked at the outcome of community schools in New York City, referring to it with a pseudonym: “Quantitatively, the aggregate data from the Unified City School Survey were uploaded into Microsoft Wxcel [sic] for data analysis.” Even though the community schools advocated by Bowman were supposed to bring the community together, in his own data, they fared worse than regular schools. “Non-Community Schools achieved a statistically significant higher mean in the area of Strong Family-Community Ties as measured by the 2017 Unified City School Survey,” Bowman wrote.
Bowman shrugged this contradiction aside, saying “it is especially challenging for the Unified City Schools to foster Strong Family-Community Ties” because it is “culturally diverse.” Instead of questioning his premise, he argued that “additional opportunities for professional learning in the area of Strong Family-Community Ties within the Community School ecosystem could help improve the achievement of Community Schools in this category.”
Bowman’s paper also appears to include multiple instances of plagiarism.
In one passage, Bowman explains critical race theory, one of his theoretical methods, by copying from another author’s summary of the 2001 book, Critical Race Theory: An Introduction. He takes the passages from R. Rolon-Dow without quotation marks, as required by academic authors. In the copied passage, Bowman merely substitutes “Latino/Latina” with “Latinx/Latina,” following the latest academic fashion, although it appears that he misunderstood the purpose of the “x” noun ending, which is to remove gendered language like “Latina.” He also inserts a typo by changing “the intersection between race/ethnicity and caring” to “the intersection between race/ethnicity caring.”
Though he credits a string of authors in parenthesis, those citations are also copied from Rolon-Dow, with her name also tacked on the end.

On multiple other occasions, Bowman summarizes other research by copying and pasting without quotation marks, instead of paraphrasing the passages to show that he has an independent understanding of the concepts. For example:

The paper provides little in the way of meaningful advances in scholarship. “As a pragmatic study, no attempt was made here to generalize these data. The researcher studied the phenomenon of collaboration among leaders within the Community School ecosystem within its natural setting. This study reported based simply on the results found,” it concluded.
The general observation amounts to a form of racial reductionism, separating people into identity categories and judging them according to their ancestry.
Bowman implied that minority students learn better from minority educators—a contention that would, if true, amount to advocating for segregated schools. Being “just like the children she served” allowed “a Black female principal” to “enact[] Critical Care as part of her transformational leadership,” the paper said, referring to the version of Critical Theory that Bowman describes deploying on schoolchildren.
Bowman suggested that it may be more important for an educator to be oppressed than competent. “One can conclude that personal experiences, as opposed to professional learning or training, creates the perceptions and practices that were trauma-informed, culturally responsive, and community-driven,” Bowman wrote, adding that “exemplary academic performance or professional development” was less important than “personal experiences” such as growing up as a fellow member of the minority “community.”
This is the kind of dismal pseudo-scholarship that drives much of education and, unfortunately, an increasing share of political life. It should be scrutinized, as should its authors.

In 1984, then-President Ronald Reagan gave a moving speech commemorating the 40th anniversary of the <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/101-year-old-d-day-vet-knew-exactly-what-he-was-fighting-for-kick-hitlers-a-out-of-europe" target="_blank" rel="noopener">D-Day invasion</a> on the beaches of Normandy, France — and 40 years later, for the 80th anniversary, President Joe Biden appears to have given at least parts of the same speech.
Radio host and Outkick founder Clay Travis noticed the similarities and share video of the two speeches side by side. &#8220;Joe Biden essentially plagiarized Ronald Reagan’s famous 1984 speech at Pointe du Hoc today in Normandy. Watch these clips side by side. Wow,&#8221; he commented.

Several critics pointed out that when it came to plagiarism, a cribbed D-Day speech would not be Biden&#8217;s first rodeo.

But while the speech patterns were very similar — a fact that Biden&#8217;s defenders claimed was simply because both presidents were describing the same events — former Governor Scott Walker (R-WI) noted a marked difference between the demeanor of the two men. Reagan, 73 at the time he gave the 40th anniversary speech, appeared to be in good health as he stood tall and saluted the veterans present that day. Biden, in contrast, <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/biden-raises-eyebrows-at-d-day-ceremony-gets-escorted-away-as-macron-greets-veterans" target="_blank" rel="noopener">raised eyebrows</a> when he appeared unsure whether he was supposed to sit or stand — and was then escorted from the ceremonies while French President Emmanuel Macron remained behind, speaking with the veterans and guests.

A conservative college professor was investigated by his school for alleged racism after he accused a black student of plagiarism.
Claremont McKenna College professor William Ascher spent a year as the target of a racism investigation launched after a black student the professor accused of plagiarism filed a discrimination complaint. While the investigation took place between December 2022 and December 2023, the details only recently came to light in <a href="https://www.claremontindependent.com/post/former-claremont-mckenna-dean-investigated-for-racism-after-accusing-student-of-plagiarism" target="_blank" rel="noopener">an article</a> for The Claremont Independent, the school’s campus newspaper.
Ascher was ultimately cleared of racism and asked by the school&#8217;s president and administration committee to write <a href="https://5255e4db-a8f6-497e-b8e2-3c19e5c3c8cb.usrfiles.com/ugd/5255e4_3cc682094e024b3eb6c0eccc9c5ba9c9.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">his own account</a> of the case.
Ascher said that on December 1, 2022, he submitted evidence showing that an unnamed black student had committed plagiarism on three short papers he wrote in two of Ascher’s courses. Ascher noted that this student missed one-third of the classes that semester. When Ascher read the papers, he determined they were of a “far superior” quality than two other short papers submitted by the same student, who received middling grades for those papers. Because of the difference in quality, Ascher ran the papers through a plagiarism-checking website and found plagiarism in all three papers.
But Ascher didn’t hear back from the school about the plagiarism accusations, and when he inquired about the delay, he was told the case had been taken out of consideration by the school’s Academic Standards Committee (ASC).
On January 18, 2023, Ascher said he asked why the case wasn’t being presented to the ASC. He said he was then informed that the accused student had filed a complaint of racism against him, along with several other black students who filed their claims after the accused student.
On February 2, 2023, Ascher learned the nature of the allegations against him. The student accused of plagiarism claimed he had been singled out because he was black, but Ascher provided evidence that he had also accused a white student of plagiarism that same semester.
Another black student said it was racist for Ascher to ask the student about the difference between natural forests and plantations in a natural resources course.
A third black student complained because Ascher asked her to sit closer to him. Ascher said that he asked several students to sit closer so that he could hear them through their COVID masks in the large classroom in which he taught.
A fourth black student claimed that Ascher asked her how old her mother was when she had given birth – an allegation Ascher flatly denied.
A fifth black student complained that Ascher did not use the term “black people” when discussing the apartheid era in South Africa.
Finally, a student born in Guatemala complained that Ascher spoke to him in Spanish when they were first introduced. This same student also claimed that Ascher was the reason the student wasn’t approved to study abroad. Ascher was on a committee that rejected the student’s request to study abroad because he had a low GPA. This student claimed in his complaint that he was so upset by not being able to study abroad that he dropped his International Relations (IR) major. Ascher noted that the student graduated as an IR major at the end of the school’s investigation, so the student never stopped pursuing that degree.
Months later, on April 14, 2023, Ascher received a written notice of the complaints against him. The list no longer included the complaint accusing Ascher of racism for asking a black student about the differences between forests and plantations but included a new complaint from a student saying the professor called on them “too much.”

“I was puzzled as to why so many students would come forward with contrived complaints, two of which are outright lies, and I learned from the investigator’s report that their formal complaints, coming a year after the alleged offenses, cam [sic] after the student accused of plagiarism filed his complaint,” Ascher wrote. “It seems likely that he violated the confidentiality requirement by soliciting more complaints. I cannot help concluding that this has been a concerted effort to prevent having the student charged with plagiarism, failing both courses, and facing a strong likelihood of being suspended (not only for the plagiarism, but also for lying about when papers were submitted).”
In early May 2023, Ascher spoke to an outside investigator looking into the racism allegations. He said he sent her point-by-point rebuttals and provided evidence of the initial complainant’s plagiarism. Over the next few months, he continued to send requested evidence and immediately respond to requests from investigators.
On October 19, Ascher received the investigator’s report, which cleared him of all allegations except the ones brought by the student accused of plagiarism. The report found that Ascher had discriminated against that student by submitting his suspicions of plagiarism, which Ascher said ignored the fact that faculty is obligated to report suspicions.
On December 18, more than a year after Ascher submitted evidence of plagiarism, all the racism allegations against him were dropped.
After this investigation concluded, the plagiarism case finally proceeded, the Claremont Independent reported, but the outcome is unclear.

Former Harvard University President Claudine Gay, who resigned from her position in January following numerous allegations of plagiarism, will teach a graduate-level course on “Reading and Research” this fall.
Gay taught the same course this spring, The College Fix <a href="https://www.thecollegefix.com/claudine-gay-will-teach-reading-and-research-in-fall-2024/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reported</a>, which would have been scheduled before she resigned. She will return to teach the same independent study class in the fall, even after her alleged plagiarism was widely reported. Further, she continues to receive her $900,000-a-year salary.
According to Harvard’s <a href="https://infoforfaculty.fas.harvard.edu/book/special-types-courses" target="_blank" rel="noopener">website</a>, graduate-level Reading and Research courses do not provide letter grades, and a 2011 <a href="https://scholar.harvard.edu/jimalt/classes/government-3000-graduate-courses-reading-and-research" target="_blank" rel="noopener">description</a> of the course (Gay taught the course back then as well) states that it requires “written work of sufficient quantity and quality so that the course is equivalent to a lecture course or a seminar.”
Gay resigned in January after <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/harvards-gay-accused-of-6-more-instances-of-plagiarism-in-new-complaint" target="_blank" rel="noopener">nearly 50 examples</a> of alleged plagiarism in her past academic work were uncovered.
“On December 19, I submitted a formal complaint with allegations of plagiarism by Claudine Gay,” a complaint against Gay, <a href="https://freebeacon.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/Complaint2.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">obtained</a> by The Washington Free Beacon, said. “Now I am forced to submit an additional complaint with nearly 50 allegations, including over half a dozen examples never seen before. Some of them occur in a publication by Gay that was until now believed to be free from allegations of plagiarism. Others occur in the dissertation. Harvard’s ‘independent review’ missed them. For this reason and others, a new research misconduct inquiry must be opened.”
Gay published just 17 works during her tenure as an academic, and eight of them were reported to contain plagiarized material.
The plagiarism allegations surfaced after Gay and other university presidents <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/report-obama-privately-came-out-for-gay-at-harvard-amid-anti-semitism-scandal" target="_blank" rel="noopener">testified</a> before Congress, refusing to say that calling for the genocide of Jews violated codes of conduct. Each president suggested “context” was needed to determine whether such a call would violate the school’s code of conduct.
Months later, when Gay resigned, she attempted to downplay the allegations against her by claiming “racial animus” was behind some of her criticism.

“Amidst all of this, it has been distressing to have doubts cast on my commitments to confronting hate and upholding scholarly rigor — two bedrock values that are fundamental to who I am — and frightening to be subjected to personal attacks and threats fueled by racial animus,” she <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/claudine-gay-to-resign-as-harvard-president-report">wrote</a>.
Vanderbilt University professor Carol Swain, a black scholar whom Gay is accused of plagiarizing, condemned Harvard’s handling of the situation.
“I have a problem with the way Harvard has reacted to the entire situation, because it seems like — with the assistance of some of their professors and other elites — they’re trying to redefine what is plagiarism,” Swain said, <a href="https://www.nationalreview.com/news/scholars-say-they-were-plagiarized-by-claudine-gay-ignored-by-harvard-investigation/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">according to National Review</a>. “They’re making the argument that there are different levels and, by extension, that some of it is acceptable. That is a problem for higher education in America.”
