<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Luigi Mangione, who is currently awaiting trial for the murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, has asked that his fans stop sending him so many photos.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The 26-year-old graduate of the University of Pennsylvania issued the request after being inundated with unsolicited pictures sent to him at a federal jail in Brooklyn where he is currently being held. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">“Luigi is allowed to receive photos via Shutterfly and FreePrints in accordance with mail procedures while in custody,” a </span><a href="https://www.luigimangioneinfo.com/pages/faq/"><span style="font-weight: 400;">statement</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> on the FAQ page of his legal defense information website says. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">“Due to the volume of photos, they could take longer than usual to be screened and shared. Luigi appreciates the photos that are sent and kindly asks that people send no more than five photos at a time. Please note that every photo that is received is screened and reviewed by law enforcement.”</span></p>
<p>The FAQ page previously had a <a href="https://www.newsweek.com/luigi-mangione-fans-gifts-fundraiser-jail-2036072">statement</a> asking fans to stop sending Mangione books.</p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Last Friday, the Ivy League graduate appeared for a pretrial hearing in New York Criminal Court, which attracted dozens of his supporters to the courthouse. Despite the serious nature of his charges, Mangione has accumulated a large fan base, especially among leftists who are unhappy with the U.S. healthcare system.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Mangione has pleaded not guilty to multiple counts of murder. If convicted, he faces a maximum sentence of life in prison without parole. No trial date has been set.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">He is also facing federal charges, which could result in the death penalty, but a federal grand jury has not yet indicted him. His next date in federal court is in mid-March, per <a href="https://abcnews.go.com/US/luigi-mangione-new-york-state-case-court-appearance-friday/story?id=119008079">ABC News</a></span><span style="font-weight: 400;">.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Mangione released his first public statement earlier this month and mentioned the amount of fan mail he’s received since being arrested.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">“I am overwhelmed by – and grateful for – everyone who has written me to share their stories and express their support,” the statement from Mangione read. “Powerfully, this support has transcended political, racial, and even class divisions, as mail has flooded MDC from across the country, and around the globe.”</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">He added, “While it is impossible for me to reply to most letters, please know that I read every one that I receive. Thank you again to everyone who took the time to write. I look forward to hearing more in the future.”</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Thompson, a husband and father of two children, was killed by a masked assassin who was caught on video firing multiple shots into the UnitedHealthcare CEO before fleeing the scene. Mangione was arrested in Altoona, Pennsylvania, five days after the murder.</span></p>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The organization’s global news director Phil Chetwynd told BBC Radio 4’s Media Show that AFP would closely scrutinize any future submission from the Prince and Princess of Wales, per </span><a href="https://deadline.com/2024/03/kate-middleton-picture-afp-kensington-palace-not-trusted-1235858254/"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Deadline</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">When “Media Show” host Ros Atkins asked specifically if Kensington Palace was a trusted source, Chetwynd said, “No, absolutely not. Like with anything, when you’re let down by a source the bar is raised … We sent out notes to all our teams at the moment to be absolutely super more vigilant about the content coming across our desk — even from what we would call trusted sources.”</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The news director went on to explain how rare it is to retract a photo, saying a retraction is usually issued for images sent from Iran or North Korea. The Mother’s Day photo from Middleton was so extensively edited that AP and Reuters issued “kill” notices over the weekend.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">“One thing that’s really important is you cannot be distorting reality for the public,&#8221; Chetwynd said. &#8220;There’s a question of trust. And the big issue here is one of trust, and the lack of trust and the falling trust of the general public in institutions generally and in the media. And so it’s extremely important that a photo does represent broadly the reality that it’s seen in.”</span></p>

But shortly after it was released, the Associated Press and other photo agencies issued a “kill notification” after noticing the image had been edited. Part of Princess Charlotte’s arm appeared to be missing in the photo.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Followers also noticed that Kate was not wearing her wedding rings on her left hand, among other minor inconsistencies, such as the pattern on Prince Louis’ sweater and a white line in the background. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">&#8220;AP initially published the photo, which was issued by Kensington Palace. But AP later retracted the image because at closer inspection, it appeared the source had manipulated the image in a way that did not meet AP&#8217;s photo standards,&#8221; the agency </span><a href="https://apnews.com/article/kate-princess-photo-surgery-ca91acf667c87c6c70a7838347d6d4fb"><span style="font-weight: 400;">wrote</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">. &#8220;The photo shows an inconsistency in the alignment of Princess Charlotte&#8217;s left hand.&#8221;</span></p>

<p>“By using machine learning to compute a diversity score based on a distribution of a sensitive attribute (such as race, age, or gender) in a set of images, where the distribution is based on the automatic classification of faces in the images based on the sensitive attribute, at least one embodiment of the present disclosure can automatically audit a set of images for a predetermined level of diversity of the sensitive attribute, thereby allowing a user to avoid manually identifying and tagging information related to the sensitive attribute in each image in the image set, and without requiring manual curation of a control set and labeling the images in the image set for calculating a diversity metric.”</p>
<p>Adobe filed the patent request, “System and Methods for Diversity Auditing” (Patent No. 20230267764), last February, with the application publication issued last week. (Search for the patent <a href="https://ppubs.uspto.gov/pubwebapp/static/pages/ppubsbasic.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">here</a>).</p>
<p>Leading up to the patent filing, the inventors published a research paper stating their desire to manipulate online media in pursuit of a “utopia” of representative diversity.</p>
<p>The inventors — Mehrab Tanjim, Ritwik Sinha, Moumita Sinha, David Thomas Arbour, and Sridhar Mahadevan — <a href="https://openaccess.thecvf.com/content/WACV2022/html/Tanjim_Generating_and_Controlling_Diversity_in_Image_Search_WACV_2022_paper.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">published</a> the paper, “Generating and Controlling Diversity in Image Search,” declaring that “generations of systemic biases” resulted in racial and gender demographic patterns existing in certain professions. The researchers also stated that stock image and image search engines reflect that bias, and that AI-generated images would be necessary because algorithm tweaking wouldn’t go far enough to correct the issue. <p>“The pursuit of a utopian world demands providing content users with an opportunity to present any profession with diverse racial and gender characteristics,” stated the report. “To remedy these problems, we propose a new task of high-fidelity image generation by controlling multiple attributes from imbalanced datasets.”</p>
<p>The paper is provided by the Computer Vision Foundation, platformed by Microsoft Azure and sponsored by Amazon, Facebook, and Google. Arbour was formerly a research scientist for Facebook’s Core Data Science group.</p>

<p>In an apparent extension of this research interest, the Adobe patent proposes an AI system that can not only audit the diversity of images displayed on a website or database, but tweak the content given to a user searching for certain images on a database with a “representative set” of images in the return results. The latter will occur if the AI system determines that the diversity score for the image set is too low. At that point, the system may inform the user of the diversity score of the images as well.</p>
<p>“[T]he system augments the set of images to increase diversity in the set of images,” states the patent. “For example, the machine learning apparatus may compute a diversity score [&#8230;] and determine that the set of images is below a predetermined threshold of diversity in the number of different types of the sensitive attribute that are depicted by the set of images.”</p>
<p>The patent noted that the system may retrieve data to determine appropriate diversity thresholds from census data or websites.</p>
<p>The AI system would consist of a machine learning model that may include one or more artificial neural networks (ANNs), a type of technology inspired by the structure and function of human brain neurons. The machine learning model would consist of an image collection component, which leads to a face detection network, which leads to an image classification network, which leads to a distribution component, which leads to a scoring component, and results in a generator network.</p>
<p>The image collection component identifies and collects both specific images and websites, as well as those identified and collected to achieve a higher diversity scoring. The face detection network includes a convolutional neural network (CNN), a deep learning algorithm that takes an input image and assigns meaning to learn over time. The image classification network generates an image feature vector — a translation characterizing and numerically quantifying images — with special attention to sensitive attributes that lend to a diversity score.</p>
<p>The distribution component generates a distribution of images’ sensitive attributes based on their classification, which then directly lends to the diversity score computation function of the scoring component. Then, the generator network may generate additional images based on the diversity score. Some of these images may be AI-generated creations “that look authentic to a human observer” using a generative adversarial network (GAN).</p>
<p>The Daily Upside, which first <a href="https://www.thedailyupside.com/adobe-brings-ai-to-dei-with-latest-patent/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reported</a> on the patent application, suggested that the system could also be used to conduct diversity audits of a company’s employees based on images.</p>
<p>Adobe last reported <a href="https://www.adobe.com/about-adobe/fast-facts.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">ownership</a> of over 200 million photos, 115 million vectors and illustrations, 26 million videos, and 73,000 music tracks. <p>Singer Nick Lachey has reportedly been ordered to complete an anger management class and attend Alcoholics Anonymous following an incident that took place in March of 2022.</p>
<p>According to a <a href="https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-11881447/Nick-Lachey-ordered-attend-anger-management-Alcoholics-Anonymous-meetings.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">report</a> published Monday by The Daily Mail, photographer Jody Santos was taking pictures of Lachey — and his wife Vanessa Lachey — as they exited Beverly Hills eatery Mastro&#8217;s Steakhouse, and the 98° singer approached her vehicle.</p>
<p>Santos kept the camera rolling as Lachey allegedly came closer, shouting profanities at her and reaching into the car, apparently attempting to grab her camera and her phone. She responded by rolling up the window.</p>
<p>&#8220;In all my years of photographing celebrities, no one has ever tried to hit me. I am just relieved that I rolled up my window as fast as I did, otherwise he would have knocked me out. No doubt about it,&#8221; Santos said, describing Lachey as behaving &#8220;drunkenly.&#8221;</p>
<p>&#8220;He then started punching the window. I thought he was going to break his hand; that’s how hard he was hitting the glass. I am surprised he didn’t shatter the window,&#8221; she added.</p>

<p>&#8220;He has to complete them within a reasonable time which is like a year or so. If he fails to do so, they will move forward to prosecute him with non-compliance and he will get arrested,&#8221; she said.</p>

<p><a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/artificial-intelligence" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Artificial intelligence</a> software development firm OpenAI released GPT-4, its latest AI language model, with a massive array of new capabilities.</p>
<p>In a <a href="https://openai.com/research/gpt-4" target="_blank" rel="noopener">press release</a> announcing the rollout of GPT-4 on Tuesday, OpenAI claimed that while GPT-4 still lags behind human beings in real-world scenarios, the AI can excel at theoretical and academic applications. In a developer livestream, the company showcased the software&#8217;s powerful problem-solving and image recognition, describing images, creating a working website, and even doing simulated taxes.</p>
<p>The first thing OpenAI discussed in its release was the problem-solving improvements made between GPT-4 and its predecessor, GPT-3.5. To illustrate these new capabilities, OpenAI showed a table of academic and professional exams, and the scores the software garnered. The AI scored:</p>
<ul>
<li>A 298/400 on the Unified Bar Exam, which was in the 90th percentile of results.</li>
<li>A 163 on the LSAT, in the 88th percentile.</li>
<li>A 710 on the reading and writing SAT, the 93rd percentile</li>
<li>A 700 on the math SAT, the 89th percentile</li>
<li>A 169 on the verbal GRE, in the 99th percentile</li>
<li>A 5 on the AP Art History, Biology, Macro- and Microeconomics, Psychology, Statistics, US Government, and US History exams</li>
</ul>
<p>In the developer <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=outcGtbnMuQ&amp;t=14s" target="_blank" rel="noopener">livestream</a>, OpenAI President Greg Brockman discussed several new features the updated software has. First, GPT-4 has a new system prompt in the user interface that allows the user to input new parameters for the AI to work with so that it can refine its model. Brockman demonstrated this capability with some basic prompts, including summarizing the OpenAI press release into a sentence where each word begins with G. While GPT-3.5 effectively gave up on the assignment, GPT-4 synthesized the article into the sentence: &#8220;GPT-4 generates groundbreaking, grandiose gains, greatly galvanizing generalized AI goals.&#8221;</p>
<p>When Brockman pointed out that &#8220;AI doesn&#8217;t count,&#8221; GPT-4 created a new sentence: &#8220;Gigantic GPT-4 garners groundbreaking growth, greatly galvanizing global goals.&#8221; The software was able to create similar sentences using only A&#8217;s and even Q&#8217;s.</p>
<p>Next, Brockman experimented with GPT-4&#8217;s &#8220;vision model.&#8221; The AI built a Discord chat bot that could analyze and describe images posted to the chat server. Brockman then prompted the bot to describe a screenshot of the Discord channel, and the bot responded with a detailed description of the image, including the Discord layout and messages posted into the chat. The bot was also able to describe another image of a snowboarder on an alien planet, and a cartoon of a squirrel holding a camera.</p>
<p>Brockman then uploaded a photograph of a hand-drawn joke website. The AI-built Discord bot was able to recognize Brockman&#8217;s drawing, then write Javascript code for a working website with jokes and a button to push to reveal the punchline.</p>
<p>Finally, Brockman showed that GPT-4 was able to do simulated taxes. Using a system prompt he dubbed &#8220;TaxGPT,&#8221; and a prompt that included large parts of the federal tax code, he asked ChatGPT to estimate 2018 taxes for a married couple with one child. The software was able to reason out the answers using the tax code, and came up with the family&#8217;s standard deduction and estimated tax liability.</p>
<p>The model is still not in at its full potential, OpenAI noted. According to the press release, system messages are the easiest way to &#8220;jailbreak&#8221; the AI from its boundaries, like the infamous viral <a href="https://return.life/2023/02/meet-the-pseud-who-made-dan-blow-up-on-twitter/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">&#8220;DAN&#8221; instance</a>; the model also still &#8220;hallucinates,&#8221; <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/chatgpt-makes-up-an-academic-paper-to-push-radical-gender-theory-professor-says" target="_blank" rel="noopener">making up</a> facts that don&#8217;t exist, and makes reasoning errors. The company is also working with experts to reduce &#8220;<a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/microsoft-trying-to-rein-in-bing-chat-after-ai-powered-bot-called-ap-reporter-ugly-a-liar-and-hitler" target="_blank" rel="noopener">harmful advice</a>, buggy code, or inaccurate information,&#8221; it said.</p>

<p class="p1">“Sometimes we put cameras in locations where we think we’ll encounter enigmatic fauna like American beavers or black bears,” Christian Nunes, a wildlife ecologist with OSMP, added. “We are fortunate to live in an area with a rich diversity of wildlife species, and these cameras help us to learn what animals are really out there, and what they are up to over the course of a day, a week, or even years.”</p>

<p>The Washington Post <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/climate-environment/2022/09/19/ants-population-20-quadrillion/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reported</a> last month that there are estimated to be 20 quadrillion ants on earth, or 20,000 trillion.</p>
<p>To put that into perspective, for everyone one person on earth, there are an estimated 2.5 million ants.</p>
<p>The report said that the total estimated biomass of the ants on earth is approximately 12 megatons of dry carbon, which is greater than the estimated mass of all the wild birds and mammals on earth combined.</p>
<p>&#8220;No, this isn&#8217;t some alien monster out of a horror movie, this is an actual photograph of an ant using a magnifying lens,&#8221; Dr. Yasir Qadhi tweeted in reaction to the photo. &#8220;Sleep well, my friends, and appreciate the blessings of size that your Lord has given you over this!&#8221;</p>
<p>&#8220;This is why you don&#8217;t scroll before bed,&#8221; Matthew Ghoult, writer at Motherboard, tweeted.</p>
<p>Librarian Megan Rosenberg tweeted, &#8220;My husband showed this to me last night &amp; I felt almost irate that I now know this horror.&#8221;</p>
<p>&#8220;I can see this being the inspiration for a new horror movie creature,&#8221; activist Darry Wharton-Rigby tweeted.</p>

<p>The UW-Madison <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/police" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Police Department</a> has opened an investigation into leaked nude photos and videos of University of Wisconsin <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/trans-athlete-severely-injures-girls-volleyball-player-with-spike-district-forfeits-games-for-girls-safety" target="_blank" rel="noopener">women volleyball players</a>, the school announced last week.</p>
<p>The graphic content includes a photo of numerous players lifting their sports bras after a win in November.</p>
<p>The private images and videos were published on a website, and most of the content has <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/sports/2022/10/20/wisconsin-volleyball-photos-leaked/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reportedly</a> since been removed, though it is still circulating online.</p>
<p>&#8220;We are aware that private photos and video of UW volleyball student-athletes that were never intended to be shared publicly are being circulated digitally,&#8221; University of Wisconsin athletics said in a statement shared online Wednesday.</p>
<p>&#8220;The unauthorized sharing is a significant and wrongful invasion of the student-athletes&#8217; privacy, including potential violations of university policies and criminal statutes,&#8221; it added.</p>
<p>&#8220;When the student-athletes became aware of the circulating photos, they contacted the UW-Madison Police Department. UWPD is investigating multiple crimes, including sharing sensitive photos without consent.&#8221;</p>
<p>&#8220;UWPD is not investigating the volleyball student-athletes for wrongdoing in this matter,&#8221; the statement concluded. &#8220;Our top priority is supporting our student-athletes and we are providing them with the appropriate services and resources.&#8221;</p>

<p>The girls&#8217; coach, <a href="https://uwbadgers.com/sports/womens-volleyball/roster/coaches/kelly-sheffield/1784" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Kelly Sheffield</a>, <a href="https://madison.com/sports/college/volleyball/uwpd-investigating-sharing-of-sensitive-photos-video-of-wisconsin-volleyball-team/article_a08f3eba-5301-55d3-b8b6-76df757c0432.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">told</a> Madison.com that he didn&#8217;t want to comment other than to say he&#8217;s in full support of his players. The coach echoed the school, noting that the student-athletes would not face disciplinary action.</p>
<p>Sheffield has been coaching at the university for nine years, leading the Badgers to a 2021 NCAA Championship and qualifying for the NCAA Final Four four times in his tenure &#8212; in 2013, 2019, 2020, and 2021.</p>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The city of Amarillo, <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/texas">Texas</a>, took to <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/twitter">Twitter</a> earlier this week to ask the public for help identifying a “strange image” caught on camera outside the city’s zoo.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The image appears to be someone or something walking just beyond the zoo&#8217;s fence and looking toward the camera. The photo has baffled many people, some of whom have gone so far as to suggest the creature caught on tape could be a chupacabra, the mythical beast that is said to suck the blood of goats.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">“The Amarillo Zoo captured a strange image outside the zoo in the dark and early morning hours of May 21 (around 1:25 a.m.),” the city’s official Twitter page wrote on Wednesday. “Is it a person with a strange hat who likes to walk at night? <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">CBS News <a href="https://www.cbsnews.com/news/amarillo-zoo-creature-texas/">reported</a> that Amarillo Parks and Recreation Department Director Michael Kashuba said the camera that took the mysterious photo is placed in an area that normally doesn’t see much foot traffic. </span><span style="font-weight: 400;">&#8220;Nobody could figure out what it was,&#8221; Kashuba said. </span><span style="font-weight: 400;">&#8220;And so, that&#8217;s where we decided to kind of reach out to our community to see if there was any thoughts on what it could potentially be.”</span></p>
<p>He added, &#8220;It&#8217;s just a very unique picture in a very unique location.&#8221;</p>
