<p>LIV Golf, the pro golf league backed by Saudi Arabia that was meant to rival the PGA Tour, is in limbo because the Saudi Arabia Public Investment Fund pulled financial backing after the 2026 season.</p>
<p>LIV was billed as the cool, modern, team-based, 54-hole golf league with a lot of cash from Saudi Arabia. At the time of its creation in 2021, it seemed too good to be true. Five years later, it&#8217;s on life support as tournaments have been postponed — and a scale-back effort is in place as the CEO tries to keep the business going for another year by looking for new investors.</p>
<p>LIV Golf CEO Scott O&#8217;Neil spoke publicly Tuesday at Trump National D.C. for the first time since the news broke that funding was going away. O&#8217;Neil kept his tone positive, saying he feels ready for the moment and is prepared to tackle the financial uncertainty behind his league.</p>
<p>&#8220;This moment for me &#8230; I understand uncertainty is difficult for some people, and I understand that not knowing what tomorrow brings can be a challenge,&#8221; O’Neil said. “This is 100 percent what I love to do, this moment. Everybody is meant for a certain thing in their life. I believe this is what I am meant for. I love this moment.&#8221;</p>
<p>The moment is intense, suddenly navigating without what seemed like an endless cash flow. O&#8217;Neil will have to restructure the business model for LIV, and that&#8217;s how the businessman is framing this next chapter — as a refresh, not a threat.</p>
<p>&#8220;First and foremost, we need to get the players settled, on board, and focusing on golf,&#8221; O’Neil said. &#8220;Secondly, we have to create a plan that&#8217;s a business plan, a business that works from a business standpoint, from a profit and loss standpoint, like every other business in the world, and we are well on our way to that.&#8221;</p>
<p>The league started with a lot of buzz after promising big checks and signing big names — including Dustin Johnson, Phil Mickelson, Bryson DeChambeau, and Brooks Koepka, among other PGA stars.</p>
<p>But viewership didn&#8217;t match the energy. Per Awful Announcing, for the 17 telecasts on Fox last year, LIV Golf averaged just 338,000 viewers, compared to its PGA Tour competition that averaged 2.66 million.</p>
<p>Koepka is back with the PGA Tour, but DeChambeau remains with LIV through his contract that ends after the 2026 season. The golf and online personality said on Tuesday that he would focus on YouTube if LIV failed. The golf star was once involved in a lawsuit with the PGA and hinted that golf&#8217;s premier league might not welcome him back with open arms.</p>
<p>Other LIV stars, including Jon Rahm, don&#8217;t have expiring contracts. Rahm said the LIV CEO has a &#8220;lot of hard work to do&#8221; to find funding for the league&#8217;s future, per Golf.com.</p>
<p>The current season isn&#8217;t in complete shambles, although a tournament set for June in New Orleans has been postponed. The tour continues in the nation&#8217;s capital this weekend before heading internationally to Korea at the end of May.</p>

<p>It seems LIV Golf may be living on a prayer after reports claim Saudi Arabia&#8217;s Public Investment Fund (PIF) is considering pulling funding from the tour that lured the biggest names away from the PGA just over four years ago.</p>
<p>The Financial Times reported Wednesday that the PIF is &#8220;on the verge&#8221; of slashing financial support for the league, while other outlets suggested LIV could be facing &#8220;imminent closure.&#8221;</p>
<p>The fund has poured millions in LIV Golf to rival the PGA Tour, but <a href="https://www.wsj.com/sports/golf/liv-golf-saudi-funding-e7c19130?mod=Searchresults&amp;pos=2&amp;page=1">The Wall Street Journal</a> reported that financial support could end after the league struggled to attract a significant television audience in the United States.</p>
<p>Amid the dire reports, LIV Golf CEO Scott O&#8217;Neil told players and personnel Wednesday that the league is fully funded through the rest of the year and that reports of its imminent shutdown are &#8220;false,&#8221; according to <a href="https://www.golfchannel.com/news/news/report-saudi-arabia-pif-on-the-verge-of-cutting-financial-support-for-liv-golf">Golf Channel.</a> O&#8217;Neil did not address funding beyond the 2026 season.</p>
<p>&#8220;Our season continues exactly as planned, uninterrupted and at full throttle,&#8221; O&#8217;Neil said.</p>
<p>The news comes as 50 players are teeing off for a LIV tournament outside Mexico City.</p>
<p>The potential timeline for any shutdown remains unclear, with The Journal reporting that Saudi officials are still weighing their decision. The outlet noted there is still a chance LIV could continue in some form depending on the outcome of those discussions.</p>
<p>The league&#8217;s undoing would be welcomed by some golf fans who have argued the rival tour has tarnished the game&#8217;s traditional reputation.</p>
<p>Since LIV&#8217;s launch, the league has faced government investigations, lawsuits, and other litigation, contributing to a lack of profitability on the world stage.</p>
<p>LIV lost nearly $600 million in 2024, according to The Journal, despite signing big names, including Bryson DeChambeau, Dustin Johnson, Jon Rahm, and Phil Mickelson.</p>
<p>In 2o22, PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan addressed the mass exodus of players from his league.</p>
<p>&#8220;The PGA Tour, an American institution, can’t compete with a foreign monarchy that is spending billions of dollars in an attempt to buy the game of golf,&#8221; Monahan said. &#8220;We welcome good, healthy competition. The LIV Saudi Golf League is not that. It’s an irrational threat.&#8221;</p>
<p>The tone shifted a year later when Monahan and Yasir Al-Rumayyan, the governor of Saudi Arabia’s PIF, appeared together to announce a framework agreement aimed at ending litigation and potentially reunifying the sport.</p>
<p>That effort ultimately stalled, leaving both tours operating independently, with the PGA now appearing to stand the test of time.</p>


LIV Golf On The Ropes As Saudis Consider Yanking Funds

<p>The four criminal charges against the world&#8217;s best golfer Scottie Scheffler, including a felony assault charge, have been dropped after Jefferson County (KY) Attorney Mike O&#8217;Connell said on Wednesday that his office cannot move forward with the prosecution, ESPN <a href="https://www.espn.com/golf/story/_/id/40240096/charges-dropped-scottie-scheffler-louisville-arrest" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reported</a>.</p>
<p>O&#8217;Connell and Scheffler&#8217;s attorney, Steve Romines, appeared in court on Wednesday. O&#8217;Connell said Scheffler&#8217;s version of the incident &#8220;is corroborated by the evidence.&#8221; Scheffler said the incident with the Louisville Police was a &#8220;big misunderstanding.&#8221;</p>
<p>&#8220;Based upon the totality of the evidence, my office can not move forward in the prosecution of the charges filed against Mr. Scheffler,&#8221; O&#8217;Connell said. &#8220;Mr. Scheffler&#8217;s characterization that this was a &#8216;big misunderstanding&#8217; is corroborated by the evidence. The evidence we reviewed supports the conclusion that Detective [Bryan] Gillis was concerned for public safety at the scene when he initiated contact with Mr. Scheffler. However, Mr. Scheffler&#8217;s actions and the evidence surrounding their exchange during this misunderstanding do not satisfy the elements of any criminal offenses.&#8221;</p>

The 27-year-old golfer was arrested on May 17 after he attempted to drive into the Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville, Kentucky, to prepare for the second round of the PGA Championship. A fatal accident involving a pedestrian had stopped traffic, preventing Scheffler and other golfers from getting to the golf club&#8217;s entrance, but Scheffler said he was told by a police officer to drive &#8220;the opposite way with the traffic” to get into the golf club.</p>
<p>Moments later, another officer with the Louisville Police Department, Detective Bryan Gillis, reportedly told Scheffler to stop his vehicle. Scheffler was accused of failing to come to a stop, and police said the golfer &#8220;dragged&#8221; Gillis when he continued to drive forward. After Scheffler stopped his car, the golfer was arrested and taken to jail where he was charged with second-degree assault of a police officer, third-degree criminal mischief, reckless driving, and disregarding traffic signals from an officer directing traffic.</p>
<p>&#8220;He demanded to be let in, and proceeded forward against my directions,&#8221; Gillis <a href="https://abcnews.go.com/US/scottie-scheffler-arrest-body-worn-camera-policy/story?id=110504382" target="_blank" rel="noopener">wrote</a> in his police report. &#8220;I was dragged/knocked down by the driver. I then proceeded to arrest the driver.&#8221;</p>
<p>In a video following Scheffler&#8217;s arrest, the golfer told another officer that he didn&#8217;t know Gillis was a policeman, adding that his arm was &#8220;grabbed&#8221; while he was driving toward the golf club.</p>
<p>“So, I’m pulling in here [and] the police officer up there told me to come the opposite way with the traffic and then come in; and as I was pulling in, my window was down, an officer told me to stop,” Scheffler said. “First of all, I did not know he was a police officer. I thought he was one of the security guards that was mistaken; and as I was pulling by him, he grabbed my arm.”</p>
<p>Louisville Mayor Craig Greenberg <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/louisville-officials-no-bodycam-footage-available-from-scottie-scheffler-arrest" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a> Detective Gillis “did not have body cam footage turned on during the incident,” and the officer was disciplined for failing to turn his body camera on during the arrest.</p>
<p>Scheffler released a <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/scottie-scheffler-speaks-out-after-felony-arrest" target="_blank" rel="noopener">statement</a> following the incident saying that &#8220;a very chaotic situation” caused a “big misunderstanding of what I thought I was being asked to do.”</p>
<p>“This morning, I was proceeding as directed by police officers,” he said. “It was a very chaotic situation, understandably so considering the tragic accident that occurred earlier, and there was a big misunderstanding of what I thought I was being asked to do.”</p>
<p>“I never intended to disregard any of the instructions. I’m hopeful to put this to the side and focus on golf today,” Scheffler added. “Of course, all of us involved in the tournament express our deepest sympathies to the family of the man who passed away in the earlier accident this morning. It truly puts everything into perspective.”</p>

<p>A video posted on Facebook last week that resurfaced on Wednesday by Golf Digest Senior Writer Alex Myers shows Scottie Scheffler&#8217;s discussion with police moments after he was arrested while trying to enter the Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville, Kentucky, earlier this month.</p>
<p>Scheffler was taken into custody after he attempted to drive onto the golf club property ahead of his early tee time in the second round of the PGA Championship on May 17. A fatal accident involving a pedestrian earlier in the morning, which was unrelated to Scheffler&#8217;s arrest, had shut down traffic heading into the Valhalla Golf Club.</p>
<p>The resurfaced footage, which appears to be taken from one of the officer&#8217;s body cameras, shows Scheffler telling an officer that he was instructed by a policeman to &#8220;come the opposite way with the traffic&#8221; to get into the golf club. Moments later, however, Louisville Police Department Detective Bryan Gillis told him to stop and &#8220;grabbed&#8221; his arm and &#8220;hit&#8221; him, according to Scheffler.</p>
<p>&#8220;So, I’m pulling in here [and] the police officer up there told me to come the opposite way with the traffic and then come in; and as I was pulling in, my window was down, an officer told me to stop,&#8221; Scheffler said. “First of all, I did not know he was a police officer. I thought he was one of the security guards that was mistaken; and as I was pulling by him, he grabbed my arm.”</p>
<p>&#8220;Stop right there,&#8221; the cop tells Scheffler in the video. &#8220;Why does it matter if he&#8217;s a security guard or a police officer if someone is telling you to stop?&#8221;</p>
<p>“Yes, you’re right,” Scheffler replied. “I should’ve stopped. I did get a little bit impatient because I’m quite late for my tee time; and as he was reaching in the car, he grabbed my shoulder and hit me. &#8230; It seemed to be a little over-aggressive because the entrance was open. I pulled over because I was afraid. I thought he was gonna start hitting me and I didn’t know who he was. He didn’t tell me he was a police officer. All I saw was the yellow jacket. I didn’t know what he was doing.”</p>
<p>The officer told Scheffler that Gillis was wearing a uniform and a brightly colored jacket that was easily recognizable.</p>
<p>“Also, if someone’s telling you to stop, no matter who it is, you don’t keep going,” the officer said. “So, what happened is you kept going and you took him with you while he’s a pedestrian, okay? So, you took him with your car and [dragged] him, which is not a good thing.&#8221;</p>

<p>Scheffler told him he &#8220;was not aware&#8221; that Gillis &#8220;was a police officer.&#8221;</p>
<p>&#8220;I was actually looking out the window of the car to try to find a police officer,&#8221; he said. &#8220;If I knew he was a police officer, I would’ve been much less afraid, but panic kinda set in. As you can see, I’m still shaking because I was afraid I didn’t know who he was. He didn’t say, ‘Police, get out of the car.’ He just hit me with his flashlight and yelled, ‘Get out of the car.&#8217;”</p>
<p>The officer told the No. 1 golfer in the world that it doesn&#8217;t matter if Gillis were a traffic guard, a security guard, or a cop, saying that &#8220;if someone tells you to stop &#8230; that means you stop at that time.&#8221;</p>
<p>&#8220;You actually hurt [Gillis],&#8221; the officer said. &#8220;He&#8217;s got a huge scrape on his knee. He&#8217;s getting checked by EMS — a big bruise.&#8221;</p>

<p>Murray, who won the 2017 Barbasol Championship and the Sony Open earlier this year, battled anxiety, depression, and alcohol abuse early throughout his young career, CBS Sports <a href="https://www.cbssports.com/golf/news/professional-golfer-grayson-murray-30-dies-after-withdrawing-from-charles-schwab-challenge/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reported</a>. The pro-golfer from North Carolina said in January that he had been sober since early 2023. Murray was a standout golfer from a young age, becoming the second-youngest golfer to make the cut on the Korn Ferry Tour at just 16 years old.</p>
<p>&#8220;We have spent the last 24 hours trying to come to terms with the fact that our son is gone,&#8221; said Murray&#8217;s parents, Eric and Terry. &#8220;It&#8217;s surreal that we not only have to admit it to ourselves, but that we also have to acknowledge it to the world. It&#8217;s a nightmare.&#8221;</p>
<p>His parents said that he was loved by everyone in his life from family to friends to other golfers to fans.</p>

<p>Murray’s death was announced on CBS’ broadcast of the Charles Schwab Challenge in Fort Worth, Texas, with CBS commentator Jim Nantz saying that the PGA Tour offered to Murray’s family to “stop play.”</p>
<p>“The family was, again, adamant that Grayson — and the family — wants the tournament to go on,” Nantz said. “Grayson Murray gone way too soon at the age of 30. It’s a sad day on the PGA Tour.”</p>
<p>After he got sober last year, Murray said his faith and his fiancee helped him battle through.</p>

<p>Pro-golfer Xander Schauffele, who won his first major last weekend at the PGA Championship, revealed how he and his fellow golfers reacted to Scottie Scheffler&#8217;s arrest outside the Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville, Kentucky, on Friday.</p>
<p>Scheffler, the No. 1 golfer in the world, was arrested and charged with multiple crimes, including second-degree assault of an officer — a felony — after he attempted to get past police who were blocking the road for an accident in front of the golf club entrance. Scheffler was stuck in traffic after a 69-year-old pedestrian was struck and killed by a shuttle bus in an accident that was unrelated to Scheffler&#8217;s arrest.</p>

<p>&#8220;He&#8217;s a good dude,&#8221; Schauffele added. &#8220;As soon as I saw it, I thought it was a prank then I saw it on the news, and I was like, &#8216;Holy smokes this actually happened.'&#8221;</p>
<p>&#8220;It feels like he&#8217;s going to come out okay from all of this,&#8221; Schauffele said. &#8220;It feels like [charges] are going to get dropped. I don&#8217;t know, but he took it like a champ.&#8221;</p>

<p>According to the police <a href="https://www.si.com/golf/louisville-police-say-internal-investigation-ongoing-scottie-scheffler-arrest" target="_blank" rel="noopener">report</a> on the incident, Louisville Police Detective Bryan Gillis was directing traffic when Scheffler “was driving eastbound to gain access to the course” and then “pulled into the westbound lanes where outbound traffic was flowing to avoid the backed up traffic.” The report alleged that Scheffler then “refused to comply&#8221; with Gillis&#8217; instructions &#8220;and accelerated forward, dragging Detective Gillis to the ground,” causing “pain, swelling and abrasions to his left wrist and knee.”</p>
<p>The police department is conducting an internal investigation into Scheffler&#8217;s arrest.</p>
<p>Scheffler&#8217;s arraignment, which was initially scheduled for Tuesday, was delayed until June 3, ESPN <a href="https://www.espn.com/golf/story/_/id/40186199/scottie-scheffler-arraignment-delayed-june-3" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reported</a>. The golfer&#8217;s attorney, Steve Romines, said Scheffler will plead not guilty.</p>
<p>Schauffele, who won the PGA Championship after hitting a birdie putt on the 18th hole on Sunday, told &#8220;Pardon My Take&#8221; that he and Scheffler are in a group chat with some other pro-golfers, which Scheffler&#8217;s friends used to poke some fun at their arrested buddy.</p>

<p>The Louisville police officer who arrested the world&#8217;s top golfer, Scottie Scheffler, late last week did not have his bodycam recorder turned on during the incident.</p>
<p>ESPN <a href="https://www.espn.com/golf/story/_/id/40174105/louisville-pd-confirms-no-body-cam-video-scheffler-arrest">reported</a> that a spokesperson for the Louisville Metro Police Department confirmed reports that the officer&#8217;s body-worn camera (BWC) was not activated even though the department&#8217;s procedures mandate officers &#8220;maintain their BWC in a constant state of operational readiness.&#8221;</p>
<p>&#8220;There is no body-worn camera footage of the initial encounter,&#8221; the spokesman told the publication. &#8220;The incident is under review internally and will proceed through the judicial process. We would like to restate that all parties involved are fully cooperating. LMPD is committed to a thorough investigation for all involved.&#8221;</p>
<p>Louisville Mayor Craig Greenberg <a href="https://www.courier-journal.com/story/news/local/2024/05/18/scottie-scheffler-arrest-louisville-mayor-says-no-body-cam-of-incident/73748175007/">told</a> the Courier-Journal that the officer &#8220;did not have body cam footage turned on during the incident.&#8221;</p>
<p>&#8220;We will release footage that we have &#8230; to my knowledge, we have not yet discovered any video of the initial contact between Officer [Bryan] Gillis and Mr. Scheffler,&#8221; Greenberg added.</p>
<p>Officers are &#8220;mandated&#8221; to &#8220;immediately activate their BWC in recording mode prior to engaging in all law enforcement activities or encounters,&#8221; according to department policies.</p>
<p>Department policy states that bodycams are to be activated &#8220;to record all calls for service and law enforcement activities/encounters (e.g. arrests, citations, stops, pursuits, Code 3 operations/responses, searches, seizures, interviews, identifications, use of force incidents, collisions, transports, warrants, official conversations on departmental smartphones, etc.).&#8221;</p>
<p>Scheffler was arrested in what he and his attorney said was a misunderstanding between the officer and Scheffler.</p>

<p>He was charged with second-degree assault of a police officer, third-degree criminal mischief, reckless driving, and disregarding traffic signals from an officer directing traffic, according to a court document. The second-degree assault charge is a felony, while the others are misdemeanors.</p>
<p>“Scottie was advised to go around and turn left into the facility to come and do his pre-round preparation. The officer who charged him obviously didn’t know that,” said Steve Romines, Scheffler’s lawyer. “And so, he did what he was instructed to do. And the arresting officer didn’t think he was supposed to be doing that. And so that’s where the miscommunication occurred.”</p>
<p>Romines noted that Scheffler was in a marked courtesy vehicle with his credentials visible when he drove up to the facility.</p>
<p>“I’ve got to talk to prosecutors,” he said. “[The charges will] either be dropped or we’ll go to trial because he didn’t do anything wrong. So we’re not interested in any sort of settlement negotiations or anything like that. He didn’t do anything wrong. It was just a big miscommunication.”</p>
