CNN anchor John Berman reluctantly stepped in to save Cameron Kasky after the Parkland activist-turned-commentator defamed President Donald Trump — twice — during a Monday evening broadcast.
Berman was goaded into covering for Kasky — who twice claimed that Trump was &#8220;provably&#8221; involved in a &#8220;global sex trafficking ring&#8221; tied to the late convicted pedophile Jeffrey Epstein — by conservative commentator Scott Jennings, who had to ask whether Berman was going to let the accusation stand.

&#8220;I am appreciative that the president is being transparent about this,&#8221; Kasky said in reference to Trump&#8217;s designs on Greenland and his anger at not receiving the Nobel Peace Prize. &#8220;I would love it if he was more transparent about the human sex trafficking network that he was a part of, but you can&#8217;t win them all.&#8221;
&#8220;Cameron&#8217;s grateful that the president is being transparent about the Nobel Peace Prize and his desires for Greenland, Scott, what do you think about that?&#8221; Berman asked, ignoring Kasky&#8217;s assertion.
&#8220;You&#8217;re going to let that sit? Are we going to claim here on CNN that the president is part of a global sex trafficking ring? Or —&#8221; Jennings pushed back.
&#8220;Well, we&#8217;re going to talk about the Epstein files, Scott, I will do the fact-checking as we go along here,&#8221; Berman protested, and then turned back to Kasky: &#8220;Repeat what you said about the global sex trafficking ring.&#8221;
&#8220;That Donald Trump was provably very involved with it,&#8221; Kasky declared.
&#8220;Okay, we&#8217;ll get to that later,&#8221; Berman said, eventually adding, &#8220;Donald Trump has never been charged with any crimes in relation to Jeffrey Epstein, but we will talk —&#8221;
&#8220;Yeah, but let&#8217;s be adults here —&#8221; Kasky kept digging as Berman quickly scrambled to get him out of the hole.
&#8220;We&#8217;ll talk about the Epstein files later,&#8221; he said to Kasky, before turning back to Jennings and asking, &#8220;Satisfied? Now answer the question about Greenland.&#8221;
Sometime after the broadcast, Kasky apparently realized the gravity of what he&#8217;d said on air and offered an apology in which he also claimed he had twice made the accusation &#8220;by accident.&#8221;
&#8220;I would like to retract my comments from CNN last night and truly apologize. Donald Trump was obviously not involved with a giant international child sex trafficking ring where women and children were systematically raped by elites,&#8221; Kasky said in an <a href="https://x.com/camkasky/status/2013760245298864477">X post</a>. &#8220;I said that by accident and didn’t mean it.&#8221;

Former CNN anchor Jim Acosta received blowback on Monday over an interview he conducted using an artificial intelligence-generated likeness of a teen killed in the 2018 mass shooting at a high school in Parkland, Florida.
Acosta, who has been an independent journalist since leaving CNN earlier this year, interviewed an AI likeness of Joaquin Oliver created by the gun control group Change the Ref, founded by Oliver&#8217;s parents. The host teased the interview in a clip posted on social media.
“I’ll be having a one of a kind interview with Joaquin Oliver. He died in the Parkland school shooting in 2018. But his parents have created an AI version of their son to deliver a powerful message on gun violence,” said Acosta in a post on X.
He included a snippet of the interview in which he asked the AI-generated Oliver, “What your solution would be for gun violence?”
“Great question. I believe in a mix of stronger gun control laws, mental health support, and community engagement,” the AI emitted in response. “We need to create safe spaces for conversations and connections, making sure everyone feels seen and heard. It&#8217;s about building a culture of kindness and understanding. What do you think about that?”
Acosta responded: “I think that&#8217;s a great idea, Joaquin.”

Acosta’s use of an AI version of a school shooting victim to push a political agenda received stiff pushback online.
&#8220;Just The News&#8221; Chief Investigative Correspondent Jerry Dunleavy <a href="https://x.com/JerryDunleavy/status/1952491669162491994">called</a> the interview “deranged &amp; ghoulish.”
Washington Free Beacon investigative reporter Chuck Ross <a href="https://x.com/ChuckRossDC/status/1952475717209321948">pointed</a> out: “This is the kind of journalism that Jim Acosta is doing without the guardrails of CNN.”
“This is one of the most unhinged and grotesque things I’ve ever seen. It’s also completely in keeping with who Acosta is,” National Review senior writer Charles C.W. Cooke <a href="https://x.com/charlescwcooke/status/1952506911535902953">said</a>.
The Dispatch Editor-In-Chief Jonah Goldberg <a href="https://x.com/JonahDispatch/status/1952500970346238299">called</a> the interview “Profoundly gross.”
The pushback against Acosta’s &#8220;interview&#8221; bled over onto BlueSky, as well. BlueSky is known as a social media hive for leftists who quit X in opposition to Elon Musk’s takeover. Replies on the site were rife with disgust.

In early December, Hogg, 24, told reporters he was considering running for a top leadership position in the Democratic National Committee (DNC). He <a href="https://x.com/davidhogg111/status/1864756688764703107">stated</a>:

I think we need a new generation in the DNC, if this election has taught us nothing else. I think we need an intergenerational coalition as a party. &#8230;. the thing that I&#8217;ve realized more than anything is that we have a number of problems in the party, but I think the main one overall is that we would rather live in a comfortable delusion than an uncomfortable reality. And I think what the party needs to do is open its eyes and take its fingers out of its ears basically.

Asked what the “delusion” was, he replied:

And I think there are real conversations that we need to have. And we also need to have &#8211; help more, not just young people, but people from normal backgrounds run for office.

He then praised Walz, saying, “I think Tim Walz was actually a great example of this, of running as a teacher and gaining all the experience that he had to out &#8211; massively outperform, even in a Trump-held district, right?”
Hogg has a history of outlandish statements and self-promotion; in June 2022, he accused Florida GOP Sen. Marco Rubio of avoiding him because Hogg “triggered” him, writing in a later-deleted tweet, “Rubio staff said I can&#8217;t meet with him or his staff because I &#8216;trigger&#8217; him. I just wanna have a conversation. Please meet with me @marcorubio I just want to figure out how we can stop these things from happening. We have to end the continuous debate and find what we can agree on.”

In September 2020, Hogg <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/david-hogg-apologizes-for-condemning-violence">stated</a>, “The use of violence to acquire political power is deeply rooted in imperialism, capitalism and white supremacy[.] I personally refuse to believe that the use of this same violence will ever create nonviolent systems of government that represent and support everyone.” He later apologized but added, “Let me be clear what I am NOT trying to do is tell BIPOC people how they should react to violence directed at them by the state. It’s not my place or any white persons to direct or criticize the way BIPOC people choose to defend themselves against this violence from the state.”
Hogg was accepted to Harvard University despite getting only a 1270 on his SATs. “The bottom 25% of students admitted had an average score of 1460,” Business Insider <a href="applewebdata://0CB7A4F1-65E5-4553-8D3B-B711F7A2BEDA/v">noted</a>.

The Biden Administration continues to champion efforts to take legally purchased guns away from American citizens after Vice President Kamala Harris <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/vp-harris-pushes-gun-control-in-parkland-visit-promotes-new-push-for-red-flag-laws">touted</a> “red flag laws” as an effort to tackle gun violence during a recent visit to Parkland, FL.
During her visit, the vice president announced the creation of a national office that would focus on the implementation of <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2024/mar/23/red-flag-laws-gun-control">red flag laws</a> in states that currently have these laws in place. The Department of Justice (DOJ) would oversee the office which raises alarm bells for supporters of the Second Amendment and Republican <a href="https://www.foxnews.com/politics/republicans-blast-biden-admins-red-flag-operation-will-violate-second-amendment-rights">lawmakers</a> on Capitol Hill are raising concerns that this so-called “red flag” operation would indeed violate the Constitution.
Meanwhile, the courts are telling American citizens that illegal immigrants have the right to legally possess a weapon after an Obama-appointed federal judge in Illinois <a href="https://www.foxnews.com/politics/judge-rules-illegal-immigrants-have-gun-rights-protected-second-amendment">ruled</a> that our Constitution protects the rights of individuals who enter this country illegally.
Law-abiding American citizens are frustrated, and they have a right to be.
Approximately 986 different bills to restrict gun <a href="https://www.billtrack50.com/blog/important-gun-law-changes-in-2023/">rights</a> were introduced in the first half of 2023, according to the most recent data available.
My home state of Illinois enacted a law in 2023, <a href="https://www.ilga.gov/legislation/publicacts/102/PDF/102-1116.pdf">Public Act 102-1116</a>, which prohibits the sale and distribution of so-called “assault weapons” and high-capacity magazines. Citizens who owned these previously legal weapons could keep them, only if they <a href="https://isp.illinois.gov/Home/AssaultWeapons#:~:text=Illinois%20residents%20cannot%20lawfully%20purchase,e)%20within%20the%20link%20above.">registered</a> their weapons with the State.
Gun laws do not stop criminals from using guns while committing crimes. Criminals, by definition, do not care about gun laws. <a href="https://crsreports.congress.gov/product/pdf/IF/IF11121/1" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Federal law</a> requires a criminal background check for all firearm sales and transfers by licensed dealers. The challenge is that most criminals do not legally obtain their guns.
Moreover, semi-automatic weapons are not the weapon of choice when committing a crime. According to <a href="https://www.pewresearch.org/short-reads/2023/04/26/what-the-data-says-about-gun-deaths-in-the-u-s/">Pew Research Center</a>, in 2020 “handguns were involved in 59% of gun murders and non-negligent manslaughters. Rifles — the category that includes “assault weapons” – were involved in 3% of firearm murders.” This means that approximately 408 people were killed by semi-automatic firearms in 2020.
In <a href="https://www.inquirer.com/news/philadelphia-gun-arrests-2021-convictions-vufa-20210330.html">Philadelphia</a>, people who are accused of illegally carrying a gun have seen their chances of being convicted in court decline from 63% in 2017 to 49% in 2019.
This is why the recent ruling by an Obama-appointed district court judge for the Northern District of Illinois, Sharon Johnson Coleman, is so concerning.
Judge Coleman ruled that a federal ban on undocumented immigrants owning firearms is <a href="https://nypost.com/2024/03/20/us-news/illinois-judge-rules-illegal-migrants-can-carry-guns/">unconstitutional</a> and dismissed charges against an illegal named Heriberto Carbajal-Flores, who was arrested in 2020 for violating a federal law which prohibits non-citizens from possessing guns. Judge Coleman’s ruling stated that since this illegal immigrant had no criminal record, and the circumstances behind his arrest were not violent, he should not be deprived of his Second Amendment right to bear arms.
Case in point, being in the United States illegally was not enough cause to deny this individual his Second Amendment rights.
Judge Coleman seems to have forgotten one important fact; being in the country illegally is a violation of 8 U.S.C. § 1325, which makes it a <a href="https://www.americanimmigrationcouncil.org/research/immigration-prosecutions#:~:text=%C2%A7%201325%20makes%20it%20a,entering%20or%20attempting%20to%20enter." target="_blank" rel="noopener">felony</a> to unlawfully enter the United States.
In <a href="https://www.williamsnickl.com/can-i-own-a-gun-after-a-felony-conviction-in-illinois/#:~:text=Once%20you%20are%20convicted%20of,in%20the%20last%2020%20years" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Illinois</a>, it is illegal for a person convicted of a felony to possess a firearm.
Any person desiring to legally purchase a firearm in the state of Illinois must obtain a Firearms Owners Identification Card (FOID Card). To be eligible for a <a href="https://www.ispfsb.com/Public/Faq.aspx#:~:text=To%20be%20eligible%20for%20a,been%20convicted%20of%20a%20felony." target="_blank" rel="noopener">FOID</a> card, amongst other regulations, a person must not be an alien who is lawfully present in the United States.
You cannot even enter a gun shop or buy ammunition without a FOID card in the state of Illinois.
So, this individual&#8217;s firearm must have been illegally obtained which is another federal violation. Yet, this Obama-appointed judge ruled that he could keep his weapon and cannot be prosecuted for any of his numerous crimes.
On the flip side, a law-abiding American citizen in Illinois, who legally obtains a firearm is now, by definition, a felon, for not registering his or her weapon with the state police.
The Biden administration’s DOJ may want to think twice before coming after a citizen’s right to bear arms — a right guaranteed by our Constitution. Maybe the government and the judiciary should enforce the gun laws that are already on the books before looking to punish legal gun owners and award criminals.

The Biden administration is renewing its push for stricter gun control and an assault weapons ban with the <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/doj-launches-national-resource-center-to-aid-authorities-in-taking-firearms-from-people-deemed-threat-to-themselves-or-others">creation</a> of a new national office to push “red flag laws.”
Vice President Kamala Harris traveled to Parkland, Florida, on Saturday and toured the halls of Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, the site of a 2018 mass shooting in which a former student of the school killed 14 students and three staff members and wounded 17 others. After the tour, Harris delivered a speech pushing legislation on gun control.
“You know, part of what I talk to families about is the fact that one of five families in America has a family member that has died because of gun violence,” Harris said, according to <a href="https://www.foxnews.com/politics/vp-harris-pushes-gun-control-site-parkland-school-shooting-victims-dad-calls-slap-in-the-face" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Fox News</a>. “That the leading cause of death for the children of America is gun violence.”
A report from Pew Research last year found that gun-related deaths among teens jumped by about 50% between 2019 and 2021. One expert <a href="https://www.foxnews.com/us/teen-violence-drove-spike-gun-deaths-contrary-popular-talking-point-expert">said</a> that the data suggested that the rise in gun deaths is closely tied to an increase in juvenile crime during the COVID pandemic and lockdowns.
Harris did not discuss the impact of lockdown policies but instead focused on firearms and echoed President Joe Biden’s calls for an assault weapons ban and other gun control measures. She also promoted a new office, the National Extreme Risk Protection Order Resource Center, to aid states that have passed red flag laws. The Department of Justice <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/doj-launches-national-resource-center-to-aid-authorities-in-taking-firearms-from-people-deemed-threat-to-themselves-or-others">announced</a> the launch of the center on Saturday morning.
“We have to understand the facets of this and when we do reflect and review and, dare I say, study what happened here at Stoneman Douglas, we must be willing to have the courage to say that on every level, whether you talk about changing laws or changing practices and locales, that we must do better,” she said.
“Of the 21 that have passed red flag laws, I challenge the others to come on over,” Harris said. “We got some resources for you to help you implement the work that you have done that has been the work of a leader on this tragic issue.”
In general, red flag laws authorize courts to temporarily restrict a person’s access to firearms after receiving a complaint about the individual’s mental state or concerns that the person may have violent tendencies.
According to the White House, the Biden administration has <a href="https://www.whitehouse.gov/briefing-room/statements-releases/2024/03/23/fact-sheet-vice-president-harris-announces-gun-safety-solutions-while-continuing-efforts-to-keep-schools-safe-from-gun-violence/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">allocated</a> $750 million toward funding red flag law programs, crisis intervention programs, mental health courts, and other state-level actions. The Department of Justice has awarded just $238 million of the funds since 2021.

Former School Resource Officer Scot Peterson was found not guilty on Thursday of all charges stemming from his much-criticized response to the 2018 massacre at <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/parkland-shooting" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School</a>.
Peterson, who worked for the Broward County Sheriff&#8217;s Office, was charged in 2019 &#8220;with seven counts of neglect of a child and three counts of culpable negligence and one count of perjury,&#8221; according to <a href="https://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/parkland-shooting-verdict-jury-reaches-decision-scot-peterson-rcna91145" target="_blank" rel="noopener">NBC News</a>. He <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/nation/2023/06/29/scot-peterson-trial-parkland-shooting-verdict/">faced</a> up to nearly 100 years in prison for each count of child neglect.
Peterson was dubbed &#8220;The Broward Coward&#8221; for failing to confront the shooter for nearly 45 minutes during the tragedy where 17 people were murdered and 17 more were injured.

Peterson’s response, or lack thereof, was so controversial that it drew the attention of top officials across the country, including former President Donald Trump, who slammed Peterson just a few days after the tragedy.
“When it came time to get in there and do something, he didn’t have the courage or something happened. But he certainly did a poor job. There’s no question about that,” Trump said. “That’s a case where somebody was outside, they’re trained, they didn’t act properly or under pressure or they were a coward. It was a real shock to the police department.”

Peterson&#8217;s attorney, Mark Eiglarsh, said during close arguments on Monday that the prosecution&#8217;s case hinged “upon this erroneous belief that he knew that there were kids in that 1200 building being shot by this monster. And that wasn’t proven because it didn’t happen.”
However, prosecutors brought up other examples of numerous other people on campus who quickly knew where the shooter was and they also brought in witnesses who testified that Peterson did not follow the proper protocols.
“In that moment, while he stood at those doors, every student and every teacher on the third floor was still alive. In that moment, choose to go in, or choose to run. And Scot Peterson chose to run,” assistant state attorney Kristen Gomes said this week. “He left behind an unrestricted killer to spend the next four minutes and 15 seconds wandering the halls at his leisure.”
“He was the only hope for those victims,&#8221; she added.

Jury selection begins Wednesday in the trial of a former school officer accused of failing to confront the mass killer who gunned down 14 students at a public school in Parkland, Florida, in 2018.
Scot Peterson, who was tasked with protecting Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, is charged with <a href="https://www.local10.com/news/national/2023/05/30/florida-deputy-faces-trial-for-alleged-failure-to-confront-parkland-school-shooter/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">seven counts of felony child neglect</a> related to four murdered students and three others who were injured on the third floor during the shooting. The Daily Wire is not naming the shooter due to company policy about not giving notoriety to mass killers.
<a href="https://www.mirror.co.uk/news/us-news/officer-accused-hiding-during-parkland-30110196" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Victims’ parents</a> dubbed Peterson “the coward of Broward,” expressing their support for the prosecution. Andrew Pollack, the father of one of the victims, stated that Peterson “wouldn&#8217;t have gone in with full body armor and a bazooka.” Pollack&#8217;s 18-year-old daughter, Meadow, was murdered during the shooting.
Peterson, 60, also faces three counts of misdemeanor culpable negligence and a perjury charge for allegedly lying to investigators.  If convicted, Peterson could face nearly a century in prison for the child neglect charges alone and would lose his $104,000 pension.
The National Association of School Resource Officers stated that Peterson’s prosecution is a first. His trial begins as Texas authorities investigate the officers who didn’t confront the Uvalde gunman who killed 19 students and two teachers at an elementary school last May. None of the Texas officers have been charged.
Robert Jarvis, a Nova Southeastern University professor, stated that Peterson deserved to be terminated from his job but described his prosecution as an “overreach” and said Peterson “is being used as a scapegoat” for the “many people [who] failed on February 14,” the day of the tragedy.
Peterson <a href="https://www.local10.com/news/national/2023/05/30/florida-deputy-faces-trial-for-alleged-failure-to-confront-parkland-school-shooter/">reportedly</a> entered the building with his gun drawn 73 seconds before the shooter arrived, but he retreated rather than confront the shooter.  Peterson then reportedly hid from the gunman in a spot with his weapon drawn for 48 minutes – 45 minutes after the shooting ended.  
He said he thought the shots were coming from a sniper outside, and Peterson’s attorney, Mark Eiglarsh, said 22 defense witnesses also thought the shots were coming from outside the building.

Oral arguments are scheduled to begin on June 14.  For Peterson to be convicted of child neglect, prosecutors must show that he was a “caretaker” of the children under Florida law. Florida is one of a <a href="https://www.kcra.com/article/trial-of-former-deputy-accused-of-failing-to-confront-parkland-shooter/44049451" target="_blank" rel="noopener">handful of states</a> that allow a six-member jury to try non-capital offenses.
The judge, Martin Fein, noted that courts have traditionally interpreted the Florida statute broadly, finding babysitters and even kidnappers as “caretakers.”  Eiglarsh argues that most police officers are exempt from this classification and that the shooter’s weapon was far superior to Peterson’s.

Trial Begins For Former School Resource Officer Accused Of Hiding Outside During Parkland Shooting

The <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/parkland-shooting" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Parkland shooter</a> who killed 17 people on Valentine&#8217;s Day in 2018 was formally sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole on Wednesday after a Florida jury rejected the death penalty last month.
The shooter, who The Daily Wire will not name, pleaded guilty to 17 counts of murder last year, which included 14 students as young as 14 years old and three staff members, for the massacre at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
The Associated Press <a href="https://apnews.com/article/shootings-education-florida-fort-lauderdale-parkland-school-shooting-343ad047ce2904328a3310a0714e6274" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reported</a> Judge Elizabeth Scherer sentenced the shooter to 17 consecutive life terms.
Judge Scherer had no choice but to hand down the sentence after the jury, composed of seven men and five women, voted 9-3 on October 13 to sentence the shooter to death. Florida law requires the vote to be unanimous to impose the death penalty.
The jury foreman in the trial determining the fate of the Parkland High School shooter said three of the 12 jurors opted for a life sentence in prison.
Benjamin Thomas, the jury foreman, told CBS Miami that one juror refused to vote in favor of executing the gunman because she believed he had some form of mental illness. Her belief may have been why two more jurors ultimately voted with her.
&#8220;There was one with a hard no — she couldn&#8217;t do it — and there was another two that ended up voting the same way,&#8221; Thomas said, adding that the verdict to put the shooter in prison for life without parole disappointed him, but he respected the other jurors&#8217; choices.
The judge&#8217;s voice broke as she read the first of the 34 life sentences, according to The Associated Press. But she recovered strength and volume while family members sobbed during the sentencing.
Judge Scherer called the families and wounded victims who testified strong, graceful, and patient.
&#8220;I know you are going to be OK because you have each other,&#8221; Scherer said.
&#8220;I want to thank the family members for the privilege of learning about each and every one of your loved ones,&#8221; Scherer said before the official sentencing Wednesday. &#8220;I can tell you they will not be forgotten.&#8221;
Defense attorneys for the shooter argued that his mother drank during pregnancy, causing the shooter to have fetal alcohol syndrome that went undetected throughout his life.
Lori Alhadeff, the mother of 14-year-old Alyssa, who was killed on that dreadful day four years ago, said the victims&#8217; relatives are &#8220;beyond disappointed with the outcome.&#8221;
&#8220;This should have been the death penalty — 100%,&#8221; Alhadeff said, according to The Associated Press. &#8220;I sent my daughter to school, and she was shot eight times. I cannot understand. I just don&#8217;t understand.&#8221;
Axios reported Florida Governor Ron DeSantis (R) expressed disappointment with the 12-person jury&#8217;s decision to recommend life in prison instead of the death penalty.
&#8220;I think that if you have a death penalty at all, that that is a case — where you&#8217;re massacring those students, with premeditation, in utter disregard of basic humanity — that you deserve the death penalty,&#8221; DeSantis said last month.

On a warm winter day in Parkland, Florida, a former Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School student, expelled for repeated disciplinary issues, entered a building on campus and opened fire, eventually killing 17 people and injuring 17 more.
The shooter, who will not be named by The Daily Wire, was <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/parkland-shooter-who-murdered-17-gets-life-sentence-not-death-desantis-reacts" target="_blank" rel="noopener">recently sentenced to life in prison</a> for his crimes, but it’s important to remember how we ended up here.
February 14, 2018, began like any other day at Stoneman Douglas. Students were in class, teachers were teaching, and no one inside the school had any clue about the tragedy that was about to take place.
Shortly before 2:30 p.m. that day, a 19-year-old former student with a history of disturbing behavior entered one of the school buildings and opened fire into multiple classrooms. A fire alarm went off as the shooter continued to fire into classrooms, and a lockdown wasn’t activated until minutes later. 
By the time the rampage was over, 14 students and three staff members were killed, and another 17 were injured, making the Parkland shooting the fifth deadliest school shooting in American history and surpassing the 1999 Columbine High School massacre as the deadliest shooting to take place at an American high school.
In the aftermath of the shooting, as Democrats and the media rallied against Second Amendment supporters, disturbing information came to light about how law enforcement in Parkland handled the shooting. 
The shooter was known to law enforcement and government agencies long before the school shooting. He was transferred between schools six times within a three-year period due to behavioral issues that schools sought to address themselves rather than pass to law enforcement.
In 2014, he was sent to a school specifically for children with emotional or learning disabilities, and reportedly threatened other students, The Washington Post <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/national/anti-gun-marches-planned-for-cities-throughout-the-us-world/2018/03/24/a7365514-2f59-11e8-b0b0-f706877db618_story.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reported</a>. By 2016, he was allowed back into Stoneman Douglas but was expelled the following year, but due to Broward County School policy, he wasn’t expelled from the system, and sent to yet another school.
Throughout all of this, psychiatrists recommended committing the shooter to a residential treatment facility, while the Florida Department of Children and Families investigated him in 2016 for graphic Snapchat posts in which he cut his arms and said he wanted to buy a gun. A school resource officer during this time also suggested the shooter receive an involuntary psychiatric examination. 
In the decade before the shooting, police received dozens of phone calls reporting the shooter and his family, including calls about him threatening to shoot up the high school.
All the while, the shooter’s social media posts included pictures of him with numerous weapons, as well as threats against police officers and others, saying he wanted to recreate the University of Texas tower shooting of 1966.
And just one month before the shooting, someone called the FBI’s tip line to report the shooter’s seeming desire to kill people, his disturbing behavior, and his threatening social media posts — but the FBI never followed up, NBC News <a href="https://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/fbi-got-tip-parkland-shooter-nikolas-cruz-january-didn-t-n848681" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reported</a>.
In addition to numerous authorities failing to prevent the shooter from ever being able to follow through with his vicious threats, police were found to have done little to stop the shooter once he entered the school. School Resource Officer (SRO) Scot Peterson was armed and at the high school when the shooting began, but remained outside the building as the shooter gunned down students and staff. He was suspended without pay shortly after the shooting and retired, but more than a year later, he was arrested and charged for child neglect and culpable negligence, as well as perjury. He pleaded not guilty and filed to have the charges dropped. His trial was delayed in July.
In his defense, Peterson’s attorney has said the former SRO believed the shooter had remained outside the building, and radio dispatches back this up to an extent, with Peterson telling police to lock down the school and ensure “no one comes inside the school.” But he also told police that “We also heard it’s by, inside the 1200,” referring to the building the shooter first entered.
Broward County Sheriff Scott Israel received the most scrutiny for his response to the shooting, with Coral Springs police officers arriving to find that sheriff’s deputies had not entered the building well after the alert came in. Israel also later admitted that he had changed the sheriff’s policy regarding active shooter situations from saying deputies “shall” engage with active shooters to saying they “may” engage. The change was credited with allowing deputies to stay outside while the shooter rampaged through the school.
On April 20, 2018, Israel received a no-confidence vote from his local union. A year later, on January 11, 2019, Florida Republican Governor Ron DeSantis officially suspended Israel from his duties over his response to the shooting. Later that year, after attempting to appeal his suspension, the Florida Senate voted to uphold DeSantis’ decision.
The shooter’s trial was delayed due to the coronavirus pandemic, but on October 13, he was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole, getting spared the death penalty by the Florida jury. A death penalty conviction requires a unanimous vote from the jury, but three jurors reportedly voted against the death penalty, resulting in a life sentence instead. 
Jury foreman Benjamin Thomas <a href="https://www.cbsnews.com/miami/video/parkland-gunman-sentencing-trial-jury-foreman-benjamin-thomas-said-it-didnt-go-the-way-he-would-hav/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">told CBS Miami</a> that he voted for the death penalty to be imposed, and was “not happy” with how things turned out.
&#8220;It really came down to <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/she-couldnt-do-it-parkland-shooter-jury-foreman-says-one-firmly-rejected-death-sentence" target="_blank" rel="noopener">a specific juror</a> who believed [the gunman] was mentally ill,&#8221; Thomas said. &#8220;She didn&#8217;t believe that because he&#8217;s mentally ill he should get the death penalty.&#8221;
As The Daily Wire <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/breaking-jury-reaches-verdict-in-parkland-shooter-sentencing-trial" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reported</a> at the time, the decision not to implement the death penalty was met with disappointment and frustration by family members of victims who attended the trial.
“What do we have the death penalty for,” asked Dr. Ilan Alhadeff, whose daughter Alyssa was killed during the shooting.
“We are beyond disappointed with the outcome today,” his wife, Lori, said after the sentence was handed down. “I just don’t understand this.”
A life sentence means the shooter will be off the streets and unable to hurt any more innocent victims, while also saving taxpayers the costs of appealing a death sentence. 
Families of victims, however, receive little solace from the conviction, knowing their loved ones are no longer alive while the shooter gets to live a full life, even if he is behind bars.

Despite his dissatisfaction with the vote, Thomas said, &#8220;that&#8217;s how the jury system works.&#8221;

According to Thomas, the jury concluded their decision on Wednesday, but some wanted to take the night to sleep on it before returning to court the following day.
If a juror has made up their mind and they will only vote one way, &#8220;there&#8217;s nothing else you can do, so we voted and moved on,&#8221; he said, adding that he felt bad for the victims&#8217; families as the decision hurt many of them.
&#8220;This is insane. Everyone knows, right?&#8221; Chen Wang, 14-year-old shooting victim Peter Wang&#8217;s cousin, yelled during a news conference after the decision was read, according to <a href="https://apnews.com/article/parkland-shooter-jury-recommendation-live-updates-15c5121be1b8b7a73b85607d602e6ba2" target="_blank" rel="noopener">The Associated Press</a>. &#8220;We need justice.&#8221;

On Thursday, Florida GOP Governor Ron DeSantis reacted to the sentence handed to the Parkland shooter who murdered 17 people, including 14 high school students, on Valentine’s Day, February 14, 2018.
The jury deliberated less than two days before deciding the shooter should receive a life sentence without parole, instead of the death penalty, for the massacre at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School.
“I think that if you have a death penalty at all, that that is a case where you’re massacring those students with premeditation and other disregard for basic humanity, that you deserve the death penalty,” DeSantis stated.
“And so the jurors came back; apparently it was eleven to one, with one holdout refusing to authorize the ultimate punishment, and that means that this killer’s going to end up getting the same sentence as people who committed bad acts but acts that did not rise to this level,” he continued. “I just don’t think anything else is appropriate except the capital sentence in this case, and so I was very disappointed to see that. I’m also disappointed that we’re four and a half years after these killings and we’re just now getting this.”
“You know, they used to do this: He would have been executed in six months,” DeSantis declared. “He’s guilty. Everybody knew that from the beginning, and yet it takes years and years in this legal system that is not serving the interest of victims.”

Many in the courtroom were disturbed or frustrated by the sentence the shooter received.
Some parents of the murdered students reacted verbally to the sentence: Tony Montalto, whose 14-year-old daughter Gina was murdered by the shooter, <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/live/2022/10/13/us/parkland-trial-verdict">said</a>, “The monster that killed them gets to live another day. &#8230; Society has to really look and re-examine who and what is a victim.”
Dr. Ilan Alhadeff, whose 14-year-old daughter was another victim, said he was “disgusted” not only with the jury but also the legal system, asking rhetorically, “What do we have the death penalty for?”
At the beginning of August, Alhadeff gave a heartbreaking speech about his daughter at the sentencing trial of the shooter.
“She was supposed to get married,&#8221; he said, breaking down in tears. “I was going to have my father-daughter dance. She would have had a beautiful family, four kids, live in a gorgeous house, a beach house on the side. All those plans came to an end with Alyssa’s murder.”

A Florida jury rejected the death penalty Thursday for the Parkland school shooter who <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/parkland-shooting">killed 17 people</a> on Valentine&#8217;s Day 2018.
The shooter received life in prison without the possibility of parole for each of the murders, causing disappointment and frustration among family members of the victims attending the trial.

The shooter, who The Daily Wire will not name, was in the penalty phase of his trial, having pleaded guilty to seventeen counts of murder last year. Fourteen students and three staff members were killed, with the youngest victims only 14 years old.
The jury, composed of seven men and five women, had to be unanimous to impose the death penalty. Otherwise, the shooter had to receive a life sentence for his crimes, which prosecutors described during closing arguments as entailing &#8220;systematic massacre.&#8221;
The shooter&#8217;s defense attorneys argued that his mother drank during the pregnancy, causing the shooter to have fetal alcohol syndrome that went undetected throughout his life.
Deliberations began on Wednesday, following the conclusion of a three-month trial. According to the <a href="https://apnews.com/article/parkland-shooter-jury-recommendation-live-updates-15c5121be1b8b7a73b85607d602e6ba2">Associated Press</a>, the case was the deadliest of its kind to go to trial.

Their names included: Alyssa Alhadeff, a 14-year-old Varsity soccer player; Scott Beigel, a 35-year-old cross-country coach; Martin Duque, a 14-year-old who had dreams of becoming a Navy Seal; Nicholas Dworet, a 17-year-old senior committed to the University of Indianapolis; Aaron Feis, a 37-year-old father and football coach; Peter Wang; a 15-year-old who helped his classmates escape the massacre and was posthumously admitted to West Point; Carmen Schentrup, a 16-year-old National Merit Scholar and president of an acapella group; Alex Schachter, a 14-year-old athlete and marching band member; Helena Ramsay; a 17-year-old who wanted to travel the world; Meadow Pollack, an 18-year-old senior committed to Lynn University; Alaina Petty, a 14-year-old ROTC cadet of the month; Joaquin Oliver, a 17-year-old Miami Heat fan; Gina Montalto, a 14-year-old Girl Scout and avid reader; Cara Loughran, a 14-year-old who taught education classes at her church; Jaime Guttenberg, a 14-year-old who loved helping children; Chris Hixon, a 49-year-old Navy Veteran and athletics director; Luke Hoyer, a 15-year-old basketball lover and scholarship winner.
