The Algerian boxer who dominated women’s boxing at the Paris Olympics admitted to both having a gene only present in males and to taking hormone treatments to lower his testosterone. 
Imane Khelif, the 26-year-old who made headlines for <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/boxer-who-failed-gender-tests-wins-gold-in-womens-boxing-without-dropping-single-round-entire-olympic-run">competing as a woman</a> despite failing multiple gender tests, <a href="https://www.lemonde.fr/en/sports/article/2026/02/05/boxer-imane-khelif-reveals-she-took-hormone-treatment-before-paris-olympics_6750171_9.html">told</a> the French outlet L&#8217;Équipe on Wednesday that he had SRY (sex-determining region Y), a gene that determines male sex. Khelif also told the outlet that he took hormones to lower his testosterone levels before competing in the 2024 Paris Olympics. 
&#8220;I have female hormones. And people don&#8217;t know this, but I have taken hormone treatments to lower my testosterone levels for competitions,&#8221; Khelif said. “For the Paris Games qualifying tournament, which took place in Dakar, I lowered my testosterone levels to zero.”
Khelif won the gold in the women’s welterweight division at the Olympics and did not lose a single round during the entire competition. That came after Khelif failed two gender tests administered by the International Boxing Association in 2019 and 2023, which is not affiliated with the Olympic Committee. 
Khelif argued that “it’s natural” to have the SRY gene. “We all have different genetics, different hormone levels. I&#8217;m not transgender. My difference is natural. This is who I am. I haven&#8217;t done anything to change the way nature made me. That&#8217;s why I&#8217;m not afraid,” he <a href="https://www.newsweek.com/maga-reacts-to-boxer-imane-khelif-interview-on-gender-11475081">added</a>. 
Reacting to the interview, Marshi Smith and Kim Jones, the co-founders of the Independent Council on Women’s Sports, said that it proved that Khelif was male. 
&#8220;Algerian Olympic women’s gold medalist Imane Khelif has now confirmed he is male,” they said in a joint statement. “With men no longer eligible for Olympic women’s boxing under World Boxing rules, Khelif reportedly plans to box professionally in Europe—though he inexplicably says he will still undergo sex screening for the LA 2028 Games in hopes of competing.”
The controversy drew international attention, with President Donald Trump weighing in during his 2024 election campaign to say that Khelif was a man. 
&#8220;I respect everyone, and I respect Trump. Because he is the President of the United States. But he cannot distort the truth. I am not a trans woman, I am a girl. I was raised as a girl, I grew up as a girl, the people in my village have always known me as a girl,&#8221; Khelif said Wednesday. 
In July 2025, a <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/we-were-right-leaked-medical-report-says-boxer-who-beat-up-women-at-olympics-is-a-man">leaked medical report</a> on Khelif revealed the male karyotype, or chromosomal structure. Another report <a href="https://reduxx.info/algerian-olympic-boxer-imane-khelif-admits-to-having-male-chromosomes-for-the-first-time/">showed</a> that Khelif had 5-alpha reductase deficiency, a rare autosomal recessive genetic condition impacting males. 
Despite the reports and his admitting to having the SRY gene, Khelif told L&#8217;Équipe that he still wants to compete as a woman in the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles. Khelif said he would take another gender test if required for the competition.

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) permitted Khelif to compete in the women’s Olympic boxing at the Paris Games last year, despite failed gender tests in 2019 and 2023. Khelif <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/boxer-who-failed-gender-tests-wins-gold-in-womens-boxing-without-dropping-single-round-entire-olympic-run">dominated</a> the women’s welterweight final, taking home the gold without dropping a single round the entire Olympics.

The test was <a href="https://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/boxing/article-14771089/Leaked-medical-report-Imane-Khelif-biological-male-Olympics.html">administered</a> by Dr. Lal PathLabs in New Delhi back in 2023, which was the same year the International Boxing Association (IBA) disqualified Khelif for failed gender tests.

Piers Morgan, Megyn Kelly, J.K. Rowling and more reacted to a new report that claimed to show proof confirming that Algerian Olympic boxer  Imane Khelif — who took the gold in the women’s competition in Paris — is a biological male with a sex development condition.
<a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/french-journalist-claims-medical-report-proves-olympic-boxer-who-took-gold-in-womens-division-a-man?topStoryPosition=2">French journalist </a>Djaffar Air Aoudia, who allegedly obtained a medical report, said that an MRI determined “Khelif had no uterus, but instead had internal testicles and a ‘micropenis’ resembling an enlarged clitoris,” <a href="https://reduxx.info/algerian-boxer-imane-khelif-has-xy-chromosomes-and-testicles-french-algerian-medical-report-admits/">Reduxx reported</a>. The fighter also reportedly has XY chromosomes and testosterone levels typical of males.

Former collegiate swimmer and vocal advocate for women’s sports <a href="https://x.com/Riley_Gaines_/status/1853416147225387212">Riley Gaines</a> said, “Remember the man who won an Olympic gold medal in women’s boxing? Khelif previously failed gender eligibility tests administered by the IBA, but was allowed by the IOC (International Olympic Committee) to compete against biological women in the 2024 Paris Olympics, since the Olympics’ gender eligibility standard for boxing is based merely on a fighter’s passport.
Opponents of Khelif and advocates for girls and women’s spaces in sports spoke out about the gender controversy, but the legacy news media maintained that Khelif was female and categorized any dissent as “false gender claims,” as previously <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/french-journalist-claims-medical-report-proves-olympic-boxer-who-took-gold-in-womens-division-a-man?topStoryPosition=2">reported</a>.

Former American collegiate swimmer Ali Truwit proves never giving up pays off after she ended up recently taking home the silver twice in the <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/olympics" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Paralympics</a>, 16 months after she lost her leg in a shark attack.
The 24-year-old swimmer competed in Paris and took home the silver in the <a href="https://x.com/TeamUSA/status/1832102781433606469">women&#8217;s 100m backstroke S10</a> on September 6 and the women’s S10 <a href="https://www.cnn.com/2024/07/27/sport/katie-ledecky-ariarne-titmus-swimming-paris-olympics/index.html">400-meter freestyle</a>, setting a new American record in the latter with a time of 4:31.39, <a href="https://www.cnn.com/2024/09/06/sport/ali-truwit-swimming-shark-paralympics-spt-intl/index.html?Date=20240906&amp;Profile=CNN,CNN+International&amp;utm_content=1725625428&amp;utm_medium=social&amp;utm_source=facebook&amp;fbclid=IwZXh0bgNhZW0CMTEAAR0wtnPnbI02FZf6qpxrrkBqJuvIwv_GToJEphjujId_TWsunETfStoHJZo_aem_z7jzA8HtSZso3DRtsFo4vg">CNN</a> reported.
“It’s a real full circle moment and speaks to the support I have all around me,” Truwit told members of the press after her race. “When you are truly faced with death and you understand what a second chance at life means, you want to make the most of it.”
“Every day there is something new for me that I learn that kind of evokes a new memory from the attack,” she added. “Because I was conscious the whole time. Truthfully, at the start I thought it was going to be something where I overcame the fear and that was it.”
&#8220;I have learned from this journey that that is not what this journey looks like,” Truwit continued. “That there will be days it’s great and there will be days I have to fight to get that love back. But I would say I am at 90:10 right now of really feeling comfortable and happy in the water and I am thankful to be there.”

In May 2023, Truwit was on vacation swimming in the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of Turks and Caicos when she was attacked by the shark. She managed to fight off the animal and then swim some 70 meters to a boat before she was airlifted to the hospital, CNN noted.
“I think it was survival instinct. It was a terrible day, it’s a terrible memory. It was shocking, terrifying, but I am alive, I am here and I am going to make the most of it,” Truwit said.

Doctors were able to save her life, but the swimmer ended up losing her foot and part of her leg in the attack. She underwent three surgeries and six months later, she got back in the water and now is a two-time silver medalist.
Truwit couldn’t have gotten where she is today without that persistence, but credits those closest to her, her friends and family, with helping her make it.
“Sophie, who was in the water with me and tied the tourniquet on my leg and saved my life, is in the stands, as well as Hannah, who was the one who was in medical school rotation at the trauma hospital I was airlifted to,” Truwit said after the race. “I am so lucky for them and all the others in the stands.”
“I think my parents have done an incredible job raising me and my three brothers to be adaptable, to try and look for the positives in life and appreciate all we have been given,” she added. &#8220;So, when I was faced with a life-changing trauma, I worked to see the positive and focus on gratitude and let that carry me.&#8221;

Ugandan Olympic runner Rebecca Cheptegei has died after she sustained burns to 80% of her body when she was allegedly set on fire by her boyfriend.
Cheptegie, 33, passed away Thursday at the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital in Eldoret, Kenya, where she had been receiving treatment, ESPN <a href="https://www.espn.com/olympics/story/_/id/41130765/uganda-rebecca-cheptegei-dies-due-burns-suffered-attack" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reported</a>. Cheptegei had recently competed in the Paris Games.
Trans Nzoia County Police Commander Jeremiah ole Kosiom said Monday that the attack, <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/olympic-runner-in-critical-condition-after-being-doused-with-gasoline-set-on-fire" target="_blank" rel="noopener">which occurred the day before</a> just across the border from Uganda, began over a dispute between Cheptegei and her boyfriend, Dickson Ndiema, the BBC <a href="https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/c984rz0ypeno" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reported</a>. Cheptegei reportedly had returned from church with her two children before the argument began.

“The couple were heard quarreling outside their house. During the altercation, the boyfriend was seen pouring a liquid on the woman before burning her,” Kosiom said, according to the BBC.
Ndiema was also injured in the attack and treated at the hospital.
“[Ndiema] is believed to have sneaked into the compound at around 2:00 p.m. on Sunday while the wife and the children were in church. Upon returning, Dickson, who had procured petrol, began pouring it on Rebecca before he set her ablaze.”
Neighbors reportedly rescued the couple and put out the flames. The dispute reportedly involved Cheptegei purchasing property and building a house in Trans Nzoia to be closer to training facilities. She placed 44th in the Paris Olympics marathon over the summer. She previously won a gold medal at the World Mountain and Trail Running Championships in Chiang Mai, Thailand, in 2022.
It is unclear whether Ndiema has been charged with any crimes. Peter Ogwang, Uganda&#8217;s minister of state for sports, said authorities in Kenya were investigating the attack, ESPN reported.
Government data from 2022 indicates nearly 34% of Kenyan girls and women aged 15-49 have been the victims of physical violence, the outlet noted, adding that married women were at a higher risk. About 41% of married women in Kenya had experienced physical violence, the government survey found.

Cheptegei, as a famous athlete, was at particular risk because of her wealth, nonprofit founder Joan Chelimo told ESPN. Chelimo’s nonprofit, Tirop’s Angels, was founded by current and former athletes to combat domestic violence.
&#8220;They get into these traps of predators who pose in their lives as lovers,&#8221; she told ESPN.
Cheptegei is not the only athlete in Kenya to have been the victim of domestic violence. In October 2021, Olympic runner Agnes Tirop was stabbed multiple times in her neck, allegedly by her husband, Ibrahim Rotich. He was charged with her murder but pleaded not guilty. He was freed on bail and has not been tried yet.

Ugandan <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/sports">athlete</a> Rebecca Cheptegei is in critical condition after allegedly being doused in gasoline and set on fire by her boyfriend.
The 33-year-old Olympic athlete who most recently competed in <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/paris-olympics">Paris</a> had extensive burns on over 75% of her body, according to her doctor, per a <a href="https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/c984rz0ypeno">BBC News</a> report. She was attacked at her home in western Kenya just across the border from Uganda.
Trans Nzoia County Police Commander Jeremiah ole Kosiom said on Monday that the attack occurred on Sunday, September 1, following a dispute between her and boyfriend Dickson Ndiema. She was said to be returning from church with her two children when the attack occurred. The report alleged the fight had to do with a land dispute.
“The couple were heard quarreling outside their house. During the altercation, the boyfriend was seen pouring a liquid on the woman before burning her,” Kosiom said, per the outlet.
Cheptegei finished 44th in the marathon at the Paris Olympics this summer. She previously won gold at the World Mountain and Trail Running Championships in Chiang Mai, Thailand, in 2022, per BBC.

Kosiom told <a href="https://www.standardmedia.co.ke/western/article/2001502056/ugandan-athlete-rebecca-cheptegei-fighting-for-life-after-petrol-attack">The Standard</a>, “[Ndiema] is believed to have sneaked into the compound at around 2:00 p.m. on Sunday while the wife and the children were in church. Upon returning, Dickson, who had procured petrol, began pouring it on Rebecca before he set her ablaze.”
Neighbors are said to have rescued both injured parties and extinguished the flames. Both were transported to Kitale County Referral Hospital. Cheptegei’s parents said she had purchased the property in Trans Nzoia and built a house to be closer to training facilities.

Gunn also advised followers to refer to statements by the AOC (Australian Olympic Committee) regarding the controversy that surfaced after her appearance. 
The AOC had previously condemned a change.org petition calling for an investigation into Gunn&#8217;s selection for the Paris Olympics, claiming she unfairly manipulated the system. Petition creators claimed that both she and her husband/coach Samuel Free were involved in the selection process.
AOC chief executive Matt Carroll said the petition had &#8220;stirred up public hatred without any factual basis&#8221; and called it &#8220;vexatious, misleading and bullying,&#8221; per <a href="https://www.espn.com/olympics/story/_/id/40869549/olympics-breaker-raygun-says-online-hate-devastating">ESPN</a>.

&#8220;It is disgraceful that these falsehoods concocted by an anonymous person can be published in this way,&#8221; Carroll said. &#8220;It amounts to bullying and harassment and is defamatory. We are demanding that it be removed from the site immediately. No athlete who has represented their country at the Olympic Games should be treated in this way.&#8221;
The petition had earned more than 50,000 signatures before it was removed from the platform. The poster, identified only as &#8220;Someone who REALLY hates corruption,&#8221; <a href="https://www.change.org/p/requesting-a-transparent-thorough-independent-investigation-regarding-qualifying-raygun?source_location=search">restarted the petition</a> with slightly different wording on Thursday.
Gunn continued in the Instagram video, “But I’d really like to ask the press to please stop harassing my family, my friends, the Australian Breaking community, and the broader street dance community. Everyone has been through a lot as a result of this, so I ask you to please respect their privacy. I’ll be happy to answer more questions on my return to Australia. Thanks, everyone.”
Besides being an Olympic competitor, Gunn is also a university lecturer who holds a PhD in Cultural Studies from a university in Sydney. She <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/the-most-awkward-and-unintentionally-hilarious-moment-in-the-history-of-the-olympics">wrote</a> a dissertation entitled: “Deterritorializing Gender in Sydney’s Breakdancing Scene: A B-girl’s Experience of B-boying.”

ESPN sportscaster <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/ridiculous-espn-sportscaster-makes-it-clear-he-thinks-men-do-not-belong-in-womens-sports">Kirk Herbstreit</a> doubled down on his earlier comments that men do not “belong in women’s sports” and made it clear he doesn’t “give a s***” if people don’t want to hear it.
Speaking Tuesday on OutKick&#8217;s “<a href="https://www.outkick.com/shows/dont-me-with-dan-dakich">Don’t @ Me With Dan Dakich</a>” <a href="https://www.outkick.com/sports/kirk-herbstreit-men-womens-sports-opinion-dan-dakich">podcast</a>, the College GameDay analyst said he has four sons and doesn’t have a daughter, but said he’s tired of not speaking out against men in women’s sports for fear of being canceled.
&#8220;I&#8217;ve been biting my tongue on a lot of topics for three years,&#8221; Herbstreit said. &#8220;I happened to see somebody say what he said, and he said, ‘Should men be able to play in women’s sports?&#8217; And I just said, ‘Ridiculous question, of course not.’”
“I didn&#8217;t dwell on it, I didn&#8217;t give a long answer, that was it,” he added. &#8220;There was way more positive [reaction] than negative &#8212; I&#8217;m sure people were upset, but I think it&#8217;s kind of a no-brainer.&#8221;
The sportscaster said he’s a Christian guy and he’s tired of a different set of rules for a person with traditional values.
&#8220;I didn&#8217;t give a s***. I don&#8217;t really give a s***, at all,” Herbstreit said. “I&#8217;m done giving any s***s, at all, about any of it.”

The comments echoed the post he made on <a href="https://x.com/KirkHerbstreit/status/1820833772247429341">X</a> that went viral, when a person posed a question to him that read, “Do men belong in women’s sports? Time for influential men in sports media to stand up, Kirk,” <a href="https://www.outkick.com/sports/kirk-herbstreit-men-womens-sports">OutKick</a> noted.
The broadcaster saw the post and replied, retweeting the person’s question and answered, “Of course not. Ridiculous question.”
His comments were met with praise by others who agreed that it’s wrong for men to compete against women in female sports, including former ESPN host Sage Steele, who left the network in 2023.
Steele shared Herbstreit’s post and <a href="https://x.com/sagesteele/status/1820895019621867678">added</a> an “applause” emoji.

A trans-identifying male runner from Italy will compete alongside women in the Paralympics in Paris.
Valentina Petrillo, 50, began identifying as a transgender woman in 2018 and began taking cross-sex hormones the next year. He has <a href="https://www.bbc.com/sport/articles/cpvymmpyjeko" target="_blank" rel="noopener">claimed</a> he knew he was female from as young as age nine.
&#8220;I deserve this selection,&#8221; he <a href="https://www.bbc.com/sport/articles/cpvymmpyjeko" target="_blank" rel="noopener">told</a> the BBC, adding that &#8220;everyone will have their questions,&#8221; but only a &#8220;minority&#8221; will understand his story.
&#8220;The historic value of being the first transgender woman to compete at the Paralympics is an important symbol of inclusion,&#8221; Petrillo said.
Petrillo will compete for Italy in the T12 classification for athletes with visual impairments. He was diagnosed as a child with Stargardt’s syndrome, a condition where people lose their central vision over time but often keep their peripheral vision.
He previously competed in the men&#8217;s running category and won 11 national titles. Last year, he also won bronze in both the women’s 200 and 400-meter races at the Para Athletics World Championships.

This summer&#8217;s Paris Paralympics run from August 28 to September 8.
The International Paralympic Committee allows each sport&#8217;s governing body to decide whether trans-identifying athletes can compete. For track and field that body is World Para Athletics, which says that anyone legally recognized as a woman can compete in the women&#8217;s category.
Petrillo claimed his &#8220;metabolism has changed&#8221; since taking cross-sex hormones, and he is &#8220;not the energetic person&#8221; he once was.
&#8220;As a sportsperson, to accept that you won&#8217;t go as fast as before is difficult. I had to accept this compromise, because it is a compromise, for my happiness,&#8221; he said.
Asked what he would say to those who say his competing against women is unfair, Petrillo said, &#8220;This is not a lifestyle choice for me, this is who I am.&#8221;
He also argued that the times trans-identifying athletes stood out for their sporting results have been &#8220;very few and far between.&#8221;
The Paris Olympics is already in the middle of another gender-related controversy this summer after two boxers in the women&#8217;s category were revealed to have XY chromosomes.
Imane Khelif of Algeria and Lin Yu‑ting of Taiwan were both disqualified from the Women’s World Boxing Championships last year after their chromosome tests came back as XY, according to the president of the International Boxing Association at the time.
However, both boxers were allowed to fight women in the Olympics this year, and both won gold medals.
Khelif <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/boxer-who-failed-gender-tests-wins-gold-in-womens-boxing-without-dropping-single-round-entire-olympic-run" target="_blank" rel="noopener">won</a> the welterweight gold medal on Friday after winning every round of every fight. Yu-ting <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/another-fighter-who-failed-gender-tests-wins-gold-in-womens-boxing-bloodies-opponent">won</a> gold in the featherweight final match on Saturday.

<a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/usa-gymnastics-challenges-demand-for-jordan-chiles-to-return-bronze-medal-says-it-has-receipts" target="_blank" rel="noopener">United States Olympic gymnast</a> Jordan Chiles has been told that she must return the bronze medal she received at the Paris Olympics following her women’s floor exercise.
On Monday, a statement from USA Gymnastics said that they will continue to fight for Chiles to keep her medal, but that its appeal was “denied by a Court of Arbitration,” the <a href="https://apnews.com/article/jordan-chiles-bronze-medal-ana-barbosu-b982ecfff1e846c57b0e1cb524a84cad">Associated Press</a> reported.
“USA Gymnastics was notified by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) on Monday that their rules do not allow for an arbitral award to be reconsidered even when conclusive new evidence is presented,” USA Gymnastics said in a statement.
“We are deeply disappointed by the notification and will continue to pursue every possible avenue and appeal process, including to the Swiss Federal Tribunal, to ensure the just scoring, placement, and medal award for Jordan,” the statement added.
Chiles performed in Paris and initially she received a score for her floor exercise of 13.666, putting her in fifth place behind Romanian gymnasts Ana Barbosu and Sabrina Maneca-Voinea, who both had final scores of 13.700, as previously <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/usa-gymnastics-challenges-demand-for-jordan-chiles-to-return-bronze-medal-says-it-has-receipts">reported</a>.
The USA coach Cecile Landi argued that the judges had inaccurately assessed the difficulty level of the routine, and they agreed, bumping Chiles&#8217; score up to 13.766. This put her in 3rd place ahead of the Romanian gymnasts and earning her a Bronze medal.

However, Romania disputed the ruling, saying the American team’s complaint wasn’t submitted within the 60-second window that was required. On Sunday, the IOC [International Olympics Committee] announced its decision to strip Chiles of her bronze medal and give it to Barbosu.

USA Gymnastics then submitted “a letter and video evidence to the Court of Arbitration for Sport, conclusively establishing that Head Coach Cecile Landi’s request to file an inquiry was submitted 47 seconds after the publishing of the score, within the 1-minute deadline required by FIG rule,” the <a href="https://usagym.org/usa-gymnastics-submits-additional-evidence-to-court-of-arbitration-for-sport/">statement</a> read.
It also noted that the “time-stamped, video evidence” was “not available to USA Gymnastics prior to the tribunal’s decision and thus USAG did not have the opportunity to previously submit it.&#8221;
The letter requested that the “ruling be revised and Chiles’ bronze-medal score of 13.766 reinstated.”
USA Gymnastics could try to appeal to the Swiss Tribunal or the European Court of Human Rights, the AP noted.
Chiles has remained mostly quiet on the controversy, <a href="https://www.independent.co.uk/life-style/jordan-chiles-olympics-social-media-b2594527.html">telling</a> her Instagram followers on Sunday, “I am taking this time and removing myself from social media for my mental health, thank you.”

LeBron James faced backlash online over the weekend after he acted rudely toward a young fan in Paris following Team USA&#8217;s gold medal victory at the Olympics.
Video that was posted online showed James scolding the young fan for wanting to take a selfie photo with the NBA star.
&#8220;Stop! Stop! Stop! Stop!&#8221; James snapped at the boy. &#8220;Don&#8217;t do that.&#8221;
The kid appeared stunned by James&#8217; rudeness and arrogance.

Another used posted: &#8220;LeBron James snaps at a kid waiting to take a picture with him. A total POS.&#8221;
Others called the event shameful because the kid was going to &#8220;remember this for the rest of his life.&#8221;
&#8220;Hey @KingJames, f you and that gold medal,&#8221; another user wrote. &#8220;Treat a kid that way, I hope no one ever buys another piece of crap merchandise from you or the @NBA who ought to suspend your a*s for unsportsmanlike conduct…off the court. You show your true character in how you treated that kid.&#8221;

The point of the Olympics, going back to ancient times, was to celebrate greatness. There were always cheaters — the winner of the marathon in the 1904 Olympics was disqualified for getting in a car during the event — but they were generally dealt with pretty quickly. Fraud wasn&#8217;t rewarded. Or at least, it wasn&#8217;t rewarded openly and deliberately by the people running the show. By the way, but the guy who eventually won the marathon at the 1904 Olympics — after the guy who took a car was disqualified — almost died at the finish line because his trainers had given him a treatment that included brandy, raw eggs, and a poison used in pesticides. It was a different time.
These days, the Olympics aren’t any less bizarre. But they are cringier. Between the degeneracy at the opening ceremony of this year&#8217;s Olympics, the convicted child rapist playing volleyball, and the two men violently beating women in boxing competitions, these Olympics were fairly disastrous. Indeed, it’s safe to say that greatness is no longer the point of the Olympics. After all, a culture that rewards mediocrity cannot tolerate a celebration of excellence. So instead, you were instructed again and again to watch losers and pretend they&#8217;re successful. Humiliation is now the point.
There was maybe no clearer illustration of this phenomenon at the Paris Olympics than the sad spectacle of 36-year-old Australian breakdancer Rachael Gunn, who uses the stage name &#8220;Raygun.&#8221; She&#8217;s allegedly an award-winning athlete, having been named the &#8220;Sports Star Of The Year&#8221; at something called the &#8220;Pedestrian Television Awards.” As it turns out, “pedestrian” would be a generous way of describing Raygun’s performance. Raygun is also a university lecturer who holds a PhD in Cultural Studies from a university in Sydney, which she earned after writing a dissertation entitled, &#8220;Deterritorializing Gender in Sydney’s Breakdancing Scene: A B-girl’s Experience of B-boying.&#8221; More on that later. It&#8217;s every bit as mind-numbing as you&#8217;d expect.
Because breakdancing for some reason is an official Olympic event (for now at least), Gunn saw an opportunity to put all of her academic work into practice. She somehow performed well enough at the Oceania breakdance qualifying tournament in order to compete in Paris. So she scored zero points for her routine because, despite making it to the Olympics as a breakdancer, she doesn&#8217;t know how to breakdance.

Someone said her routine looks like something a five year old might do right after yelling &#8220;Hey dad watch this.&#8221; That sums it up pretty well. 
At certain points her dance moves remind me of a person becoming possessed in a horror film, but that makes it sound more impressive than it is. It might be more accurate to say that she looks like a disabled kangaroo having an epileptic seizure. I can say, at least, that I have done a few of her moves myself in the middle of the night when I wake up with a charley horse in my leg. 
If you zoom in, there&#8217;s a moment during that routine where someone in the audience appears to have the same thought:

That’s the expression of a man thinking, “what in God’s name am I watching?” It&#8217;s a complete joke, and everyone watching understood that immediately. 
The fact that this woman &#8220;qualified&#8221; in any way to compete in the Olympics is the clearest possible evidence that breakdancing should not be an Olympic event. And indeed, it looks like it may not be around much longer, it&#8217;s not on the schedule as an official event at the 2028 Los Angeles games. So Rachel Gunn may have actually done the world a favor by bombing so badly that it ended this trend before it really began.

In summary, Raygun has no actual skills. And she appears to have realized that fact very early on in her professional life, which is why she&#8217;s built her entire career on the idea that anyone should be able to do whatever they want — even if they&#8217;re not any good at it. There&#8217;s no secret about this. She comes out and says it. And a university gave her a PhD for saying it, even though her dissertation has all of the readability and coherence of Scrabble tiles dumped randomly on the floor. To give you an idea, Raygun&#8217;s dissertation begins by stating:
<blockquote>I recognise my own position as a member of the LGBTQI community (though one receiving privileges from being in a heteronormative relationship).</blockquote>
So she&#8217;s LGBT, which makes her oppressed. But she&#8217;s in a &#8220;heteronormative relationship,&#8221; so she has some privilege by osmosis I guess. How can you be both LGBT and in a heteronormative relationship? I don’t know. How can you be an Olympic athlete while having the coordination of a newborn fawn, just taking its first steps? The world is full of mysteries.
In any event, she never defines what that privilege is or why it&#8217;s relevant to any actual academic topic, but she declares that she has it, right out of the gate.
Then Raygun gets into the really substantive stuff. This is where she wants you to re-conceptualize what it means to be &#8220;good&#8221; at breakdancing:
<blockquote>Rather than viewing female breakdancers as ‘lacking’ the skills and techniques required to participate, we can, instead, propose that how breakdancing operates – the way it is structured and defined – is in opposition to the feminine.</blockquote>
In other words, who cares if a woman can&#8217;t breakdance? That shouldn&#8217;t prevent them from breakdancing. All they have to do is join breakdancing competitions, and everyone else has to pretend they&#8217;re doing a good job. Problem solved. 
It&#8217;s a 300-page dissertation, and it&#8217;s almost completely unreadable, but that&#8217;s the overriding message. Women can do whatever they want — it&#8217;s only misogynists who would dare to say otherwise. Again from the dissertation: 
<blockquote>Social expectations disguised as biological assumptions have a material effect on corporeal possibility and expression.</blockquote>
What she’s trying to say here is that society restricts what women are able to do. It’s not really true, of course. And the idea that women are somehow excluded from the world of dance is just about as nonsensical a claim as you can make. You may as well argue that Asians are being unfairly excluded from martial arts. But the more pressing point here is that this is what passes for scholarship these days. Academia is now full of unimpressive dimwits who disguise the most banal observations and shallow, off-base analysis with big words and lots of unnecessary syllables. This is the mark of a dumb person. Smart people can make complicated ideas sound simple. Dumb people make simple ideas sound complicated. And that is all that academia does anymore. It is nothing more than the effort to make simple (and often quite wrong) ideas sound way more complicated than they are.
Her whole dissertation is like this. As she states:
<blockquote>I do not want to set out a utopian vision for the future of gender politics in breaking. As tempting as this may be, such a call to arms would place limitations on the prospects enabled through deterritorializations.</blockquote>
It’s good that she adds this caution. If she hadn’t, I would have thought that her dissertation about the politics of breakdancing is a guide to establishing a universal utopia on Earth. But she’s a very humble person, so she warns us that she cannot guide us to a utopia. She can only bring us most of the way to the promised land. She is like the Moses of white female street dancers.
But what about this “deterritorialization” concept? What does that word mean? Well, it doesn’t mean anything. It’s not a real word. It’s more academic jargon invented by 110 IQs who want to sound like 150 IQs, even though nobody with a 150 IQ would ever be caught dead using a word like “deterritorialization.” As for what it’s supposed to mean, as best I can tell, it means that something is being spread. If it’s deterritorialized, it is spread beyond its traditional or original territory. Something like that. What does that have to do with breakdancing? Who knows. 
The greater question is this, however: Why is a university paying someone to write a dissertation on this topic and then teach about it full-time? We could potentially use a dissertation that answers that question. That&#8217;s because, as amusing as it may be to look at this woman spaz out in front of an international audience and call it athleticism, there are serious implications here. She&#8217;s not the only person who thinks like this. Pretty much everyone in power now thinks like this.
Again, a university in Australia gave her a PhD for writing about how she&#8217;s sad because more women aren&#8217;t breakdancers. Then she won a qualifier and appeared in the Olympics despite having no talent whatsoever. And even after Raygun publicly humiliated both herself and her country, Australia&#8217;s officials are still standing by her. But in between all the sobbing and deflection and the accusations of misogyny, there was an interesting claim in there, which is that Rachel Gunn is supposedly the best female breakdancer in all of Australia. There isn&#8217;t a single woman in the entire country of 26 million people that could do any better. If that’s the case, it’s surprising. Her dance routine looks like the contortions a person might do if a spider ran up their shirt. There are a lot of spiders in Australia, so you’d think many people would be capable of at least matching her performance.
Now, this obviously isn&#8217;t the most important news story happening in the world right now. But it&#8217;s worth discussing for a few reasons. First of all, it&#8217;s hilarious. That&#8217;s the main reason. But it also tells us something about our culture and especially about the university system. Thanks to universities, whose mission is supposedly to educate future generations, a profoundly narcissistic and untalented woman is being paid to write about breakdancing — an unserious topic that, in any event, she clearly does not understand or even respect. And then, because she&#8217;s a woman, her country elevated her far beyond her competence, all the while attacking anyone who pointed out how absurd the whole situation is.
Yes, it&#8217;s quite possible that &#8220;Raygun&#8221; would justify her performance by saying that it is &#8220;interpretive&#8221; and is supposed to convey some kind of meaningful message. And to be fair, her performance does have a meaningful message. It&#8217;s just not the one she intended to send. It shows us, in humorous though excruciating detail, just what happens when someone is able to coast by on victim points and intersectionality arithmetic, eventually making it to a position that they are not remotely qualified for.
It&#8217;s just very fortunate for the rest of us that Raygun decided she wanted to be a breakdancer and not, say, an airline pilot. Imagine her interpretive piloting techniques at 30 thousand feet.
So if the Olympics are good for anything anymore, it&#8217;s putting images like that in the minds of millions of people. It&#8217;s exposing the absurdity of identity politics and the gender cult by taking their beliefs to their logical conclusion. That may not make for a good sporting competition. But with less than 90 days to go until a DEI candidate is on the ballot for the presidency of the United States, it&#8217;s hard to think of a more important or more timely message.
