Former American collegiate swimmer Ali Truwit proves never giving up pays off after she ended up recently taking home the silver twice in the <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/olympics" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Paralympics</a>, 16 months after she lost her leg in a shark attack.
The 24-year-old swimmer competed in Paris and took home the silver in the <a href="https://x.com/TeamUSA/status/1832102781433606469">women&#8217;s 100m backstroke S10</a> on September 6 and the women’s S10 <a href="https://www.cnn.com/2024/07/27/sport/katie-ledecky-ariarne-titmus-swimming-paris-olympics/index.html">400-meter freestyle</a>, setting a new American record in the latter with a time of 4:31.39, <a href="https://www.cnn.com/2024/09/06/sport/ali-truwit-swimming-shark-paralympics-spt-intl/index.html?Date=20240906&amp;Profile=CNN,CNN+International&amp;utm_content=1725625428&amp;utm_medium=social&amp;utm_source=facebook&amp;fbclid=IwZXh0bgNhZW0CMTEAAR0wtnPnbI02FZf6qpxrrkBqJuvIwv_GToJEphjujId_TWsunETfStoHJZo_aem_z7jzA8HtSZso3DRtsFo4vg">CNN</a> reported.
“It’s a real full circle moment and speaks to the support I have all around me,” Truwit told members of the press after her race. “When you are truly faced with death and you understand what a second chance at life means, you want to make the most of it.”
“Every day there is something new for me that I learn that kind of evokes a new memory from the attack,” she added. “Because I was conscious the whole time. Truthfully, at the start I thought it was going to be something where I overcame the fear and that was it.”
&#8220;I have learned from this journey that that is not what this journey looks like,” Truwit continued. “That there will be days it’s great and there will be days I have to fight to get that love back. But I would say I am at 90:10 right now of really feeling comfortable and happy in the water and I am thankful to be there.”

In May 2023, Truwit was on vacation swimming in the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of Turks and Caicos when she was attacked by the shark. She managed to fight off the animal and then swim some 70 meters to a boat before she was airlifted to the hospital, CNN noted.
“I think it was survival instinct. It was a terrible day, it’s a terrible memory. It was shocking, terrifying, but I am alive, I am here and I am going to make the most of it,” Truwit said.

Doctors were able to save her life, but the swimmer ended up losing her foot and part of her leg in the attack. She underwent three surgeries and six months later, she got back in the water and now is a two-time silver medalist.
Truwit couldn’t have gotten where she is today without that persistence, but credits those closest to her, her friends and family, with helping her make it.
“Sophie, who was in the water with me and tied the tourniquet on my leg and saved my life, is in the stands, as well as Hannah, who was the one who was in medical school rotation at the trauma hospital I was airlifted to,” Truwit said after the race. “I am so lucky for them and all the others in the stands.”
“I think my parents have done an incredible job raising me and my three brothers to be adaptable, to try and look for the positives in life and appreciate all we have been given,” she added. &#8220;So, when I was faced with a life-changing trauma, I worked to see the positive and focus on gratitude and let that carry me.&#8221;

“Hi everyone, Raygun here. I just want to start by thanking all the people who have supported me,” she shared in a video posted to Instagram on Thursday. “I really appreciate the positivity and I’m glad I was able to bring some joy into your lives. That’s what I hoped.”
“I didn’t realize that that would also open the door to so much hate, which has frankly been pretty devastating,” the competitor, whose real name is Rachael Gunn, continued. “While I went out there and I had fun, I did take it very seriously.”
She continued: “I worked my butt off preparing for the Olympics and I gave my all, truly. I’m honored to have been a part of the Australian Olympic Team and to be part of breaking’s Olympic debut.”

Gunn also advised followers to refer to statements by the AOC (Australian Olympic Committee) regarding the controversy that surfaced after her appearance. 
The AOC had previously condemned a change.org petition calling for an investigation into Gunn&#8217;s selection for the Paris Olympics, claiming she unfairly manipulated the system. Petition creators claimed that both she and her husband/coach Samuel Free were involved in the selection process.
AOC chief executive Matt Carroll said the petition had &#8220;stirred up public hatred without any factual basis&#8221; and called it &#8220;vexatious, misleading and bullying,&#8221; per <a href="https://www.espn.com/olympics/story/_/id/40869549/olympics-breaker-raygun-says-online-hate-devastating">ESPN</a>.

&#8220;It is disgraceful that these falsehoods concocted by an anonymous person can be published in this way,&#8221; Carroll said. &#8220;It amounts to bullying and harassment and is defamatory. We are demanding that it be removed from the site immediately. No athlete who has represented their country at the Olympic Games should be treated in this way.&#8221;
The petition had earned more than 50,000 signatures before it was removed from the platform. The poster, identified only as &#8220;Someone who REALLY hates corruption,&#8221; <a href="https://www.change.org/p/requesting-a-transparent-thorough-independent-investigation-regarding-qualifying-raygun?source_location=search">restarted the petition</a> with slightly different wording on Thursday.
Gunn continued in the Instagram video, “But I’d really like to ask the press to please stop harassing my family, my friends, the Australian Breaking community, and the broader street dance community. Everyone has been through a lot as a result of this, so I ask you to please respect their privacy. I’ll be happy to answer more questions on my return to Australia. Thanks, everyone.”
Besides being an Olympic competitor, Gunn is also a university lecturer who holds a PhD in Cultural Studies from a university in Sydney. She <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/the-most-awkward-and-unintentionally-hilarious-moment-in-the-history-of-the-olympics">wrote</a> a dissertation entitled: “Deterritorializing Gender in Sydney’s Breakdancing Scene: A B-girl’s Experience of B-boying.”

Rowling</a> could face time behind bars after Imane Khelif filed a “cyber-bullying” lawsuit against them for pointing out that the Algerian boxer &#8212; who failed past gender tests, per the International Boxing Association (IBA) — was allowed to fight against female boxers at the Olympics.
The X owner and the famed “Harry Potter” author were some of the higher-profile people named in the suit who took to social media to call out the International Olympic Committee for allowing Khelif to compete in women’s boxing, and going on to win the gold in the final, <a href="https://variety.com/2024/tv/news/jk-rowling-elon-musk-imane-khelif-lawsuit-1236105185/">Variety</a> reported.
Following the Paris Summer Olympics, Khelif filed a criminal lawsuit in France claiming &#8220;acts of aggravated cyber harassment.” If the boxer wins, Musk and Rowling could face anywhere from two to five years behind bars, because in France, the punishment for “cyber bullying” is jail time and fines.
The fines for cyberbullying range from $33,000 to $50,000. And for online hate speech, the fine ranges from $82,000 to more than $270,000, the <a href="https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-13742909/Elon-Musk-JK-Rowling-prison-sentences-fined-Olympic-boxer-Imane-Khelif-cyberbullying.html?ns_mchannel=rss&amp;ns_campaign=1490&amp;ito=social-twitter_mailonline">Daily Mail</a> noted.

Khelif’s attorney Nabil Boudi told the outlet that the suit was filed against Musk’s X platform, which means that it was filed against “unknown persons” according to French Law, the Daily Mail noted.
By doing so, Khelif’s attorney is able to cast a wider net that could allow for the prosecution “to investigate against all people,” including “overseas.”
“<a href="https://www.dailymail.co.uk/tvshowbiz/j-k-rowling/index.html">J. K. Rowling</a> and Elon Musk are named in the lawsuit, among others,” Boudi wrote on X, noting that former President Donald Trump could be part of the investigation. “Trump tweeted, so whether or not he is named in our lawsuit, he will inevitably be looked into as part of the prosecution.”

Rowling previously wrote on X, sharing a photo of Khelif (wearing red) fighting against Italy&#8217;s Angela Carini, the outlet noted.
“Watch this (whole thread), then explain why you’re OK with a man beating a woman in public for your entertainment. This isn’t sport,” the author wrote. “From the bullying cheat in red all the way up to the organizers who allowed this to happen. This is men reveling in their power over women.”
Trump took to X during the Olympics and wrote, “I will keep men out of women’s sports.”
Musk shared a post from former collegiate swimmer Riley Gaines who wrote, “men don&#8217;t belong in women&#8217;s sports,” with the X owner responding, “Absolutely.”
Khelif previously failed gender eligibility tests by the IBA, but was allowed by the IOC to compete against biological women in the 2024 Paris Olympics.

A trans-identifying male runner from Italy will compete alongside women in the Paralympics in Paris.
Valentina Petrillo, 50, began identifying as a transgender woman in 2018 and began taking cross-sex hormones the next year. He has <a href="https://www.bbc.com/sport/articles/cpvymmpyjeko" target="_blank" rel="noopener">claimed</a> he knew he was female from as young as age nine.
&#8220;I deserve this selection,&#8221; he <a href="https://www.bbc.com/sport/articles/cpvymmpyjeko" target="_blank" rel="noopener">told</a> the BBC, adding that &#8220;everyone will have their questions,&#8221; but only a &#8220;minority&#8221; will understand his story.
&#8220;The historic value of being the first transgender woman to compete at the Paralympics is an important symbol of inclusion,&#8221; Petrillo said.
Petrillo will compete for Italy in the T12 classification for athletes with visual impairments. He was diagnosed as a child with Stargardt’s syndrome, a condition where people lose their central vision over time but often keep their peripheral vision.
He previously competed in the men&#8217;s running category and won 11 national titles. Last year, he also won bronze in both the women’s 200 and 400-meter races at the Para Athletics World Championships.

This summer&#8217;s Paris Paralympics run from August 28 to September 8.
The International Paralympic Committee allows each sport&#8217;s governing body to decide whether trans-identifying athletes can compete. For track and field that body is World Para Athletics, which says that anyone legally recognized as a woman can compete in the women&#8217;s category.
Petrillo claimed his &#8220;metabolism has changed&#8221; since taking cross-sex hormones, and he is &#8220;not the energetic person&#8221; he once was.
&#8220;As a sportsperson, to accept that you won&#8217;t go as fast as before is difficult. I had to accept this compromise, because it is a compromise, for my happiness,&#8221; he said.
Asked what he would say to those who say his competing against women is unfair, Petrillo said, &#8220;This is not a lifestyle choice for me, this is who I am.&#8221;
He also argued that the times trans-identifying athletes stood out for their sporting results have been &#8220;very few and far between.&#8221;
The Paris Olympics is already in the middle of another gender-related controversy this summer after two boxers in the women&#8217;s category were revealed to have XY chromosomes.
Imane Khelif of Algeria and Lin Yu‑ting of Taiwan were both disqualified from the Women’s World Boxing Championships last year after their chromosome tests came back as XY, according to the president of the International Boxing Association at the time.
However, both boxers were allowed to fight women in the Olympics this year, and both won gold medals.
Khelif <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/boxer-who-failed-gender-tests-wins-gold-in-womens-boxing-without-dropping-single-round-entire-olympic-run" target="_blank" rel="noopener">won</a> the welterweight gold medal on Friday after winning every round of every fight. Yu-ting <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/another-fighter-who-failed-gender-tests-wins-gold-in-womens-boxing-bloodies-opponent">won</a> gold in the featherweight final match on Saturday.

<a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/usa-gymnastics-challenges-demand-for-jordan-chiles-to-return-bronze-medal-says-it-has-receipts" target="_blank" rel="noopener">United States Olympic gymnast</a> Jordan Chiles has been told that she must return the bronze medal she received at the Paris Olympics following her women’s floor exercise.
On Monday, a statement from USA Gymnastics said that they will continue to fight for Chiles to keep her medal, but that its appeal was “denied by a Court of Arbitration,” the <a href="https://apnews.com/article/jordan-chiles-bronze-medal-ana-barbosu-b982ecfff1e846c57b0e1cb524a84cad">Associated Press</a> reported.
“USA Gymnastics was notified by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) on Monday that their rules do not allow for an arbitral award to be reconsidered even when conclusive new evidence is presented,” USA Gymnastics said in a statement.
“We are deeply disappointed by the notification and will continue to pursue every possible avenue and appeal process, including to the Swiss Federal Tribunal, to ensure the just scoring, placement, and medal award for Jordan,” the statement added.
Chiles performed in Paris and initially she received a score for her floor exercise of 13.666, putting her in fifth place behind Romanian gymnasts Ana Barbosu and Sabrina Maneca-Voinea, who both had final scores of 13.700, as previously <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/usa-gymnastics-challenges-demand-for-jordan-chiles-to-return-bronze-medal-says-it-has-receipts">reported</a>.
The USA coach Cecile Landi argued that the judges had inaccurately assessed the difficulty level of the routine, and they agreed, bumping Chiles&#8217; score up to 13.766. This put her in 3rd place ahead of the Romanian gymnasts and earning her a Bronze medal.

However, Romania disputed the ruling, saying the American team’s complaint wasn’t submitted within the 60-second window that was required. On Sunday, the IOC [International Olympics Committee] announced its decision to strip Chiles of her bronze medal and give it to Barbosu.

USA Gymnastics then submitted “a letter and video evidence to the Court of Arbitration for Sport, conclusively establishing that Head Coach Cecile Landi’s request to file an inquiry was submitted 47 seconds after the publishing of the score, within the 1-minute deadline required by FIG rule,” the <a href="https://usagym.org/usa-gymnastics-submits-additional-evidence-to-court-of-arbitration-for-sport/">statement</a> read.
It also noted that the “time-stamped, video evidence” was “not available to USA Gymnastics prior to the tribunal’s decision and thus USAG did not have the opportunity to previously submit it.&#8221;
The letter requested that the “ruling be revised and Chiles’ bronze-medal score of 13.766 reinstated.”
USA Gymnastics could try to appeal to the Swiss Tribunal or the European Court of Human Rights, the AP noted.
Chiles has remained mostly quiet on the controversy, <a href="https://www.independent.co.uk/life-style/jordan-chiles-olympics-social-media-b2594527.html">telling</a> her Instagram followers on Sunday, “I am taking this time and removing myself from social media for my mental health, thank you.”

USA <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/gymnastics">Gymnastics</a> is contesting the International Olympic Committee&#8217;s (<a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/olympics" target="_blank" rel="noopener">IOC</a>) decision to have Jordan Chiles return the bronze medal she was awarded last week at the Paris Games, and it has provided receipts to back up its challenge.
&#8220;USA Gymnastics on Sunday formally submitted a letter and video evidence to the Court of Arbitration for Sport, conclusively establishing that Head Coach Cecile Landi’s request to file an inquiry was submitted 47 seconds after the publishing of the score, within the 1-minute deadline required by FIG rule,&#8221; USA Gymnastics, the national governing body for the sport, said in a <a href="https://usagym.org/usa-gymnastics-submits-additional-evidence-to-court-of-arbitration-for-sport/">statement</a>. 
The letter requested that the &#8220;ruling be revised and Chiles’ bronze-medal score of 13.766 reinstated.”
The gymnastics results have been mired in controversy after Chiles first took fifth place, earning her a score of 13.666 in the women&#8217;s floor exercise final. Her coach, Cecile Landi, argued that the judges had inaccurately assessed the difficulty level of the routine, which led to her score being adjusted to 13.766. This was enough to bump her into third place ahead of Romanian gymnasts Ana Barbosu and Sabrina Maneca-Voinea, who both had final scores of 13.700.
But then Romania’s Olympic committee disputed the ruling, saying the American team’s complaint wasn’t submitted within the 60-second window that was required. On Sunday, the IOC announced its decision to strip Chiles of her bronze medal and give it to Barbosu.
This announcement set off a firestorm of backlash on social media from critics insisting the decision was unfair and racist.

Now, USA Gymnastics says it has &#8220;time-stamped, video evidence&#8221; which &#8220;shows Landi first stated her request to file an inquiry at the inquiry table 47 seconds after the score is posted, followed by a second statement 55 seconds after the score was originally posted.&#8221;
&#8220;The video footage provided was not available to USA Gymnastics prior to the tribunal’s decision and thus USAG did not have the opportunity to previously submit it,&#8221; USA Gymnastics said.
Chiles has remained mostly quiet on the controversy, <a href="https://www.independent.co.uk/life-style/jordan-chiles-olympics-social-media-b2594527.html">telling</a> her Instagram followers on Sunday, &#8220;I am taking this time and removing myself from social media for my mental health, thank you.” She had previously shared an Instagram story featuring broken heart emojis after she was asked to return her bronze medal.

A fighter who failed past gender eligibility tests won gold in the women&#8217;s <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/paris-olympics" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Olympic</a> featherweight final match on Saturday.
Lin Yu-ting of Taiwan, 28, absolutely dominated 20-year-old fighter Julia Szeremeta of Poland, leaving the female fighter bloodied. Lin, who physically towered over Szeremeta, won the match in a unanimous decision.
&#8220;These two right now are not remotely on the same level,&#8221; one of the Olympic commentators noted during the match.
Lin is the second fighter who won gold in women&#8217;s Olympic boxing after gender tests revealed XY chromosomes, according to the International Boxing Association (IBA).
The International Olympic Committee (IOC) permitted Lin to compete in the women&#8217;s division despite failed gender tests in 2019 and 2023. The Olympics&#8217; gender eligibility standard for boxing is based merely on a fighter&#8217;s passport.
“As with previous Olympic boxing competitions, gender and age of the athletes are based on their passport,” IOC spokesman Mark Adams <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D4HiUIX9o00&amp;t=3s" target="_blank" rel="noopener">stated</a> at a press conference.

Adams also said that testosterone levels are not important to the IOC. “Many women can have testosterone which will be called ‘male levels’ and still be women and still compete as women,” he said. “This idea that you do one test for testosterone and that sorts everything out? Not the case, I’m afraid.”
The IBA, which the IOC no longer associates with, said two fighters, including Lin, were given gender tests after the IBA was made aware of concerns about safety from a number of fighters, coaches, and medical staffers.
“Both boxers were asked to take a further blood test,” IBA CEO Chris Roberts said at a press conference in Paris on Monday. “That happened the 23rd of March, the results came through and it demonstrated the chromosomes we refer to in competition rules that make both boxers ineligible.”
Roberts further explained that Lin had failed the chromosome test and was given the opportunity to appeal the findings to the Court of Arbitration for Sport. The IBA offered to pay the majority of the appeal, he noted. Lin, though, never appealed.
IBA President Umar Kremlev has criticized the IOC for permitting Lin and another boxer named <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/boxer-who-failed-gender-tests-wins-gold-in-womens-boxing-without-dropping-single-round-entire-olympic-run" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Imane Khelif</a> to compete with women following the failed tests. He <a href="https://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/olympics/2024/08/03/iba-paying-italian-boxer-fought-imane-khelif/74656727007/">said</a> in a press release that he doesn’t understand why the IOC is “killing” women’s boxing and emphasized that “only eligible athletes should compete in the ring for the sake of safety.”
The IOC is standing by its position, calling the IBA &#8220;not credible,&#8221; and shaming people who have questioned the gender issue on the basis of fairness and safety.

Biles told TODAY that she bowed to Andrade as a sign of sportsmanship &#8212; a view Humphrey clearly does not hold.

In a post on <a href="https://x.com/KirkHerbstreit/status/1820833772247429341">X</a> on Tuesday that’s since gone viral, a person posed a question to Herbstreit that read, “Do men belong in women&#8217;s sports? Time for influential men in sports media to stand up, Kirk,” <a href="https://www.outkick.com/sports/kirk-herbstreit-men-womens-sports">OutKick</a> reported.
The broadcaster saw the post and replied, retweeting the person’s question and answered, “Of course not. Ridiculous question.”
His comments were met with praise by others who agreed that it’s wrong for men to compete against women in female sports, including former ESPN host Sage Steele, who left the network in 2023.

Former Olympic gymnast MyKayla Skinner — and <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/simone-biles" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Simone Biles’</a> former teammate — issued a plea to the Olympic Gold medalist to make the death threats against her family and cyber-bullying stop.
Skinner faced a backlash after she posted a video in June on YouTube <a href="https://abc7news.com/post/mykayla-skinner-calls-simone-biles-put-stop-cyberbullying-after-viral-olympic-post/15154016/#:~:text=The%20public%20controversy%20around%20Skinner's,response%20to%20Skinner's%20earlier%20remarks." target="_blank" rel="noopener">during the gymnastic Olympic trials</a> in which she talked about how she felt work ethics have changed among gymnasts, not counting Biles, the <a href="https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/general-news/mykayla-skinner-asks-simone-biles-stop-cyberbullying-olympics-1235967818/">Hollywood Reporter</a> reported. 
“Besides Simone, I feel like the talent and the depth just isn’t what it used to be,” Skinner said, at the time. “I mean, obviously, a lot of girls just don’t work as hard. The girls just don’t have the work ethic.” 
The Olympics started July 26th and on July 31st Biles appeared to send a cryptic message to her former teammate, writing on social media, “Lack of talent, lazy, olympic champions,” in the caption next to a photo of the U.S. Team celebrating its victory after getting the gold.
On Tuesday, <a href="https://www.instagram.com/p/C-VTyXsJFp6/">Skinner</a> pleaded with Biles to get her followers to stop making hateful comments and threats to her, her husband, and their 10-month-old daughter.

Skinner noted that she <a href="https://www.instagram.com/p/C9GKeblSLPT/">apologized</a> for her past comments on July 6 and personally reached out to her former teammates amid the backlash, noting that Biles was the only person who responded to her, saying that she was proud of her. The former gymnast said when Biles made the post it came as a “surprise” to her. 
“If Simone truly believes that I called our team lazy and lacking talent and if that’s really how she feels, I am really heartbroken over it,” the former gymnast said. “But not just heartbroken because it isn’t what I feel or even how I previously said, but because Simone’s latest post and others that followed it fueled another wave of hateful comments, DMs, articles and emails.
“Hate that includes death threats to me, my family, and even my agent,” she added.”My family and my friends don’t deserve to be caught in the crossfire here. They’ve done nothing.”
She concluded her post pleading with Biles to “please put a stop to this. Please ask your followers to stop.”
“You have been an incredible champion for mental health awareness and a lot of people need your help now,” Skinner said.  “We’ve been attacked in ways that I’m certain you never intended. Your performance, the team’s performance and the Olympics in general should be a time that we support one another.”

The IOC, though, is standing by its position to allow the boxers to fight women.
&#8220;These athletes have been competing in senior competitions for six years with no issues,&#8221; IOC spokesperson Mark Adams said, according to <a href="https://www.espn.com/olympics/story/_/id/40732301/ioc-says-boxers-gender-dispute-remain-paris-olympics">ESPN</a>. &#8220;These women were eligible for this contest, remain eligible for this contest and compete in this contest.&#8221;
&#8220;I cannot tell you if they were credible or not credible [gender tests] because the source from which they came was not credible and the basis for the tests was not credible,&#8221; Adams continued. &#8220;For that reason there was no consideration of whether they were correct or not correct because they had no bearing for the eligibility of boxing here.&#8221;
Khelif and Yu-ting have made it to the semifinals and are guaranteed to medal after quickly defeating female challengers.
