The White House came out swinging against a bill, backed by several Republicans, that would prohibit the deportation of Haitian nationals living in the United States, according to a memo first obtained by The Daily Wire. 
The Office of Management and Budget said Wednesday that the Trump administration “strongly opposes” a <a href="https://www.congress.gov/bill/119th-congress/house-bill/1689">bill</a> sponsored by eight congressional Democrats and New York Republican Rep. Mike Lawler that would expand Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Haitians until 2029. The move from the White House comes as the House is expected to vote soon on the measure after four Republicans joined Democrats to force a vote.
“Across several Executive Orders and Proclamations, the President has made it clear that this Administration’s priority is protecting the American people and addressing the criminal threat posed by those who enter this nation with little to no vetting or overstay the visa granted them,” the White House said Wednesday. “Numerous Haitian nationals previously granted TPS have been the subject of administrative investigations for fraud, public safety, and national security.”
Last week, the Department of Homeland Security <a href="https://www.dhs.gov/news/2026/04/07/haitian-illegal-alien-violently-kills-innocent-mother-repeatedly-hitting-her-hammer">announced</a> that Rolbert Joachin, an illegal immigrant from Haiti accused of murdering a woman with a hammer, was granted TPS by the Biden administration.
In March, Lawler and three other Republicans <a href="https://clerk.house.gov/DischargePetition/2026012215?Page=2">backed</a> a discharge petition from Rep. Ayanna Pressley (D-MA) to force a vote on the proposal. The other Republicans who joined the discharge petition included Reps. Don Bacon (NE), Maria Salazar (FL), and Brian Fitzpatrick (PA). The Daily Wire reached out to their offices for comment on the president’s opposition to the measure. 
Bacon said he opposed removing TPS status because it would impact the healthcare industry.
“Removing the TPS status would cost 350,000 healthcare workers their ability to work at a time when we’re already facing serious workforce shortages,&#8221; Bacon told The Daily Wire.&#8221;I’ve heard from healthcare providers and business leaders across Nebraska who are concerned about the impact this would have on patient care and our economy. I don’t see the goodness of deporting people who are here legally, who are working, and who contribute to our country.”
Democrat sponsors of the proposal include Rep. Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick, a Florida Democrat and Haitian-American facing expulsion from the House for allegedly funneled millions of dollars into her campaign illegally.
Should the bill pass, the White House said that President Donald Trump would be advised to veto the legislation.
Former Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem directed TPS status for Haitians to be terminated on February 3, 2026, saying the conditions for giving Haitians specially protected status from deportation were no longer met. 
Judges have so far blocked efforts to revoke TPS, and DHS said it is working with the Justice Department to “determine next steps.”
Lawler and about two dozen other House Republicans recently faced criticism from conservative lawmakers over their support for Salazar’s “DIGNIDAD Act,” which would provide legal status without a way to get citizenship for those in the country illegally before 2021. Critics say the measure would be de facto amnesty and would significantly curtail efforts to deport illegal immigrants.

A Maryland man is facing attempted murder charges after authorities say he attempted to kill Office of Management and Budget Director Russell Vought at his home in Northern Virginia.
Arlington County Police arrested Colin Demarco, 26, on January 22. Demarco said that he feared a “fascist takeover” of the country under the Trump administration and that he was writing a manifesto and instructions on topics such as “Body Disposal Guide,” according to court documents reviewed by <a href="https://www.cbsnews.com/news/maryland-man-russell-vought-attempted-murder-charges/">CBS News</a>.
Charging documents say that Demarco planned to kill someone with the initials “R.V.” who “has served as a presidential appointee.” A source familiar with the case later confirmed to CBS News that Vought was the intended target.
“We are grateful for the work of law enforcement in keeping Director Vought and his family safe,” the Office of Management and Budget said in a statement.
Demarco visited Vought’s home last year. He was caught on the director’s Ring doorbell camera on August 10, according to <a href="https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/trump-administration/maryland-man-facing-attempted-murder-charges-showing-omb-director-russ-rcna257693">NBC News</a>.
Demarco has been charged with attempted murder, carrying a firearm without a permit, and unlawfully wearing a mask.
The alleged attack on Vought comes amid a series of high-profile politically motivated attacks in recent years. On January 27, a man rushed Democratic Rep. Ilhan Omar as she was speaking at a town hall and sprayed her with apple cider vinegar. Prosecutors later <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/doj-charges-man-in-apple-cider-vinegar-attack-on-ilhan-omar">charged</a> Anthony Kazmierczak with a single count alleging he “forcibly assaulted, opposed, impeded, intimidated and interfered” with the congresswoman.
In September, Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk was fatally shot during a college campus event in Utah. Some of the bullet casings from the murder weapon were <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/ammunition-from-charlie-kirk-assassination-was-engraved-with-transgender-and-anti-fascist-ideology">inscribed</a> with politically-tinged messages, such as “Hey Fascist! Catch” and lyrics from the Italian anti-fascist anthem “Bella Ciao.”
President Donald Trump narrowly survived two assassination attempts during the 2024 campaign. During an attempt in Butler, Pennsylvania, a bullet grazed the president’s ear. The shots meant for Trump killed one person in the audience, former fire chief Corey Comperatore.
Vought is the architect of key parts of Trump’s deregulatory and cost-cutting agenda. One of his key successes was designing Schedule F, a new classification that eases the process of reducing the size of the federal workforce.
The OMB director has been the target of numerous death threats and now has a security detail from the U.S. Marshals Service, according to CBS.

The Trump administration is backing more legislation that would crack down on crime in the nation’s capital and support police, according to an official White House document obtained by The Daily Wire.  
In a <a href="https://dw-wp-production.imgix.net/2025/11/SAP-HR5107-HR5214.pdf">statement of policy</a> from the Office of Management and Budget, the White House came out in support of a pair of Republican-backed bills that would require mandatory detention for certain violent crimes like armed robbery and removing cumbersome restrictions on police officers. Both proposals were advanced by the House Oversight Committee on Monday. 
“Together, these bills would hold criminals accountable and empower law enforcement officers,” the statement of policy said. “Their reforms would help make America’s Federal city more safe, free, and beautiful and critically advance the President’s broader law and order agenda.”
The policy statement indicated that the White House backed New York Rep. Elise Stefanik’s the District of Columbia Cash Bail Reform Act of 2025 (HR 5214) and Georgia Rep. Andrew Clyde’s Common-Sense Law Enforcement and Accountability Now in DC (CLEAN DC) Act of 2025 (HR 5107). 
Stefanik’s legislation would &#8220;require mandatory pretrial detention for defendants charged with certain enumerated public safety and order crimes. The movement to end cash bail and release dangerous criminals so they can commit more crimes is one of the primary reasons large cities have experienced so many repeat offenders and preventable tragedies. Washington, D.C. is a prime example and this bill will make the streets of our Federal city safer,” according to the statement of policy. 
Clyde’s legislation would “reverse unnecessary and detrimental restrictions placed on officers of the D.C. Metropolitan Police Department (MPD). For example, those restrictions include removing all officers and police union representatives from the Police Complaints Board, requiring juries to consider whether an officer consulted with mental health, behavioral health, or social workers before using deadly force, and imposing approval hurdles for the use of riot gear and less-lethal Projectiles.”
“Police officers are the backbone of any system of law enforcement, and treating them with suspicion and placing limits on their ability to take potentially life-saving action erodes trust, retention, and, ultimately, public safety,” the statement of policy added. “Removing these restrictions would help restore the effectiveness of the MPD and maintain law and order in Washington, D.C.”
Both bills are opposed by D.C.’s Democrat Mayor Muriel Bowser and Attorney General Brian Schwalb, who claimed they were an “affront” to the “principles of democracy and local self-governance on which this country was founded.”
The Trump administration has surged federal law enforcement to D.C. to crack down on murder, homelessness, and car jackings. As part of this effort, he sent hundreds of National Guard troops to the capital to patrol crime-ridden neighborhoods.

Fourteen-hundred employees at the Internal Revenue Service will be laid off in a process initiated Friday, The Daily Wire has learned.
The number is larger than anyone expected, with the IRS union filing a <a href="https://storage.courtlistener.com/recap/gov.uscourts.cand.457131/gov.uscourts.cand.457131.38.1.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">lawsuit</a> to stop what it said it had &#8220;heard&#8221; might be 1,300 layoffs across the entire Treasury Department. The real number, an Office of Management and Budget official told The Daily Wire, is 1,400 at the IRS alone, plus more at other components of Treasury.
The layoffs come as Democrats refuse to fund the government at all unless the Republican majority agrees to increased spending for non-citizens&#8217; health care and other topics. That has resulted in a government shutdown, wherein employees are sent home and traditionally receive back pay once a deal is reached.
The Trump administration has countered that if federal employees are going to be prohibited from working due to a shutdown, some will never come back at all – particularly those that staff agencies favored by Democrats.
The IRS was targeted as a bloated agency that Democrats have used for political purposes, including targeting conservative nonprofits, the OMB official said. The official said the tax collecting agency spent $35 million on guns, ammunition, and military-style weaponry between 2006 and 2023, and advertised job postings that said special agents must be willing to use &#8220;deadly force.&#8221;
The official said unnecessary and redundant employees would be targeted, with those focused on the prompt processing of tax returns protected. Still, cuts to the revenue-collection agency mean that Democrats&#8217; efforts to increase government spending in the short term could backfire, with the ability to collect increased revenue diminished.

The government has been shut down for ten days, and the Senate failed to reach a deal Thursday night.
The Daily Wire reported Friday that Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-SD) <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/the-rifs-have-begun-omb-director-confirms-federal-layoffs-amid-shutdown-stalemate" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a> Republicans held off on layoffs for 10 days to give Senate Democrats a chance to agree to agree to extend government funding at existing levels, but that now, &#8220;this gets real.&#8221;

WASHINGTON—Office of Management and Budget Director Russ Vought confirmed Friday on <a href="https://x.com/russvought/status/1976686105199268177" target="_blank" rel="noopener">X</a> that his team has begun terminating federal employees as the government shutdown rounds out its second week.
“The RIFs have begun,” Vought said, referencing “reductions in force,” the technical term for federal government layoffs. Daily Wire’s White House Correspondent Mary Margaret Olohan <a href="https://x.com/MaryMargOlohan/status/1976699856648540196" target="_blank" rel="noopener">confirmed</a> the reductions are “substantial.”
Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY) reacted to the news on <a href="https://x.com/SenSchumer/status/1976727561079341424" target="_blank" rel="noopener">X,</a> accusing the Trump administration of sowing “deliberate chaos.”
“Russell Vought just fired thousands of Americans with a tweet. Let’s be blunt: Nobody&#8217;s forcing Trump and Vought to do this,” Schumer wrote. “They don’t have to do it. They want to. They&#8217;re callously choosing to hurt people — the workers who protect our country, inspect our food, respond when disasters strike,” he continued.
Earlier this month, President Donald Trump announced his intention to use a potential government shutdown to continue his administration’s efforts to reduce the size and scope of the federal government. Speaking to reporters this week, Trump said that “Because of the shutdown,” his team would be “able to take out billions and billions of dollars of waste, fraud, and abuse,” saying that Democrats “made a big mistake” by keeping the government closed.
Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-SD) on Friday told reporters the White House has for 10 days “laid off doing anything in hopes that enough Senate Democrats would come to their senses and do the right thing and fund the government.”
But after another failed Senate vote Thursday night, Thune signaled the administration would take action.
“That’s what a shutdown does. You put the administration and this presidency in a position where they’re gonna have to make some hard decisions,” Thune said.
Now that federal employees are going to start to miss paychecks, “this gets real,” he said.
“I just think that the White House, my expectation is, yes, they’re going to start making some decisions about how to move money around, which agencies and departments are going to be impacted, which programs are going to be impacted, which employees are going to be impacted,” Thune said.
Not all Republicans are united behind the White House’s RIF effort.
“I strongly oppose OMB Director Russ Vought’s attempt to permanently lay off federal workers who have been furloughed due to a completely unnecessary government shutdown caused by Senator Schumer,” Sen. Susan Collins (R-ME), chair of the Senate Appropriations Committee, said Friday.
“Regardless of whether federal employees have been working without pay or have been furloughed, their work is incredibly important to serving the public.”
Collins said, “Arbitrary layoffs result in a lack of sufficient personnel needed to conduct the mission of the agency and to deliver essential programs, and cause harm to families in Maine and throughout our country.”
The American Federation of Government Employees — a union that represents more than 800,000 workers in the federal government and the District of Columbia — is suing to block the Trump administration from “illegally” firing thousands of federal employees.
“Federal workers are tired of being used as pawns for the political and personal gains of the elected and unelected leaders,” AFGE National President Everett Kelley said. “It’s time for Congress to do their jobs and negotiate an end to this shutdown immediately.”

President Donald Trump warned Tuesday that some furloughed federal employees could be left without back pay when the government finally reopens.
Around 750,000 government employees have not been working since the Senate failed to pass a temporary funding bill last week. When asked whether these employees would all receive back pay after the end of the government shutdown, Trump said that &#8220;it depends&#8221; on the federal worker.
&#8220;I would say it depends on who we&#8217;re talking about. I can tell you this, the Democrats have put a lot of people in great risk and jeopardy, but it really depends on who you&#8217;re talking about, but for the most part we&#8217;re going to take care of our people,” Trump <a href="https://x.com/cspan/status/1975596357172802032">told</a> reporters. “There are some people that really don&#8217;t deserve to be taken care of and we&#8217;ll take care of them in a different way.&#8221;
Trump’s remarks follow <a href="https://www.axios.com/2025/10/07/trump-memo-furloughed-federal-workers-backpay">reports</a> that the Office of Management and Budget drafted a memo making the legal case that furloughed workers aren’t automatically guaranteed back pay. The memo analyzed the &#8221;Government Employee Fair Treatment Act of 2019,&#8221; which <a href="https://www.congress.gov/bill/116th-congress/senate-bill/24/text">stipulated</a> that all federal workers furloughed after December 18, 2018, due to a lack of government funding should “be compensated for the period of the lapse.”
According to Axios, the memo argues that furloughed workers can only receive back pay if Congress includes the money for it in the bill that ends the shutdown. Furloughed workers hold nonessential positions and are sent home when the government shuts down. The Trump administration says that those who continue working during shutdowns, considered &#8220;essential&#8221; workers like air traffic controllers, should still receive pay once funding is restored.
&#8220;Does this law cover all these furloughed employees automatically? The conventional wisdom is: Yes, it does. Our view is: No, it doesn&#8217;t,” another senior official added.

Republicans are pushing for a short-term funding bill that continues funding at the same levels as the previous year, while Democrats have pushed for spending increases. 
&#8220;This would not have happened if Democrats voted for the clean [continuing resolution],&#8221; a senior administration official told Axios. 
House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) <a href="https://www.politico.com/news/2025/10/07/white-house-furloughed-workers-00596231?nid=0000015a-dd3e-d536-a37b-dd7fd8af0000&amp;nname=playbook-pm&amp;nrid=b8a59760-1fec-4664-8965-cdfacece5843" target="_blank" rel="noopener">stated</a> that he wanted furloughed employees to receive back pay, but this was not a position with which everyone agreed. 
“There are legal analysts who think that that is not something that government should do,” he said. “If that is true, that should turn up the urgency and the necessity of the Democrats doing the right thing here.”
The Trump administration has previously floated the possibility of using the shutdown to implement mass firings rather than layoffs. Those layoffs have not yet been carried out, but the Office of Management and Budget has instructed department heads to prepare to reduce their workforce as much as possible.

The Trump administration is freezing $2.1 billion in funding for Chicago infrastructure projects over accusations of “race-based contracting” as the government shutdown continues. 
Office of Management and Budget Director Russ Vought announced the move Friday morning, saying that the freeze would impact construction to modernize the city’s public transit system. It comes just two days after the Department of Transportation <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/trump-freezes-18-billion-for-nyc-infrastructure-over-unconstitutional-dei-principles?author=Zach+Jewell&amp;category=News&amp;elementPosition=2&amp;row=0&amp;rowType=Vertical+List&amp;title=Trump+Freezes+%2418+Billion+For+NYC+Infrastructure+Over+%E2%80%98Unconstitutional+DEI+Principles%E2%80%99">froze</a> $18 billion for New York City infrastructure projects over “unconstitutional” diversity, equity, and inclusion “principles.”
“$2.1 billion in Chicago infrastructure projects — specifically the Red Line Extension and the Red and Purple Modernization Project — have been put on hold to ensure funding is not flowing via race-based contracting,” Vought wrote on X. 
Shortly after Vought’s announcement, the Department of Transportation <a href="https://www.transportation.gov/briefing-room/us-department-transportation-statement-review-chicagos-discriminatory">confirmed</a> the freeze and suggested that Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) were to blame for leading the Democrats’ resistance to a temporary government funding bill. 
The department said that it was “committed to conducting these reviews as fast as possible so reimbursements can move forward. Unfortunately, Chuck Schumer and Hakeem Jeffries’ decision to shut down the government has negatively affected the Department’s staffing resources for carrying out this important analysis.”
“We urge Democrats in Congress to stop holding the federal government’s budget hostage so USDOT can get back to the important work of the American people,” the department added.

It sent letters on Friday to the Chicago Transit Authority, stating that it had initiated an administrative review of two ongoing projects to modernize the city’s rail system, and added that it was concerned about preferential treatment in construction contracting based on race. 
“Together, these critical reviews are intended to ensure no additional federal dollars go towards discriminatory, illegal, and wasteful contracting practices,” the department said. “The American people don’t care what race or gender construction workers, pipefitters, or electricians are. They just want these massive projects finally built quickly and efficiently.”

President Donald Trump said Thursday that he would hold discussions on which “Democrat Agencies” should be cut amid the ongoing government shutdown. 
Trump said he will meet with Office of Management and Budget Director Russ Vought, who oversees the allocation of federal funds. The shutdown started on Wednesday after the Senate failed to pass a temporary government funding bill backed by Republicans. 
“I have a meeting today with Russ Vought, he of PROJECT 2025 Fame, to determine which of the many Democrat Agencies, most of which are a political SCAM, he recommends to be cut, and whether or not those cuts will be temporary or permanent,” Trump <a href="https://truthsocial.com/@realDonaldTrump/posts/115304455138824245">wrote</a> on Truth Social. “I can’t believe the Radical Left Democrats gave me this unprecedented opportunity. The meeting follows Trump&#8217;s call Wednesday night for Republicans to take advantage of the shutdown as an opportunity “to clear out dead wood, waste, and fraud. Billions of Dollars can be saved.”
Vought has already moved to suspend or cancel billions of dollars of federal funding following the shutdown. He <a href="https://x.com/russvought/status/1973450301236715838">announced</a> Tuesday that nearly $8 billion in “Green New Scam” funding spent on “the Left’s climate agenda” was being cancelled. 
The terminated projects were mainly in blue states like California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Hawaii, Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Oregon, Vermont, and Washington.

Following Vought&#8217;s announcement, the Department of Energy <a href="https://www.energy.gov/articles/energy-department-announces-termination-223-projects-saving-over-75-billion">said</a> that it had terminated 321 financial awards worth $7.65 billion supporting 223 projects. The department said the projects were not economically viable, did not advance the nation’s energy needs, and would not yield a positive return on taxpayer investment.

Topline: Tensions in Washington remain high as the government shutdown enters its second day after Senate Democrats once again blocked a Republican funding measure on Wednesday. 
Roughly 750,000 non-essential federal workers have been furloughed, with tens of thousands more expected in the coming days. Essential law enforcement and military personnel, along with air traffic controllers, medical providers, and power grid workers, continue to work.
Trump: Unlike previous shutdowns, Trump is stepping in to ensure that federal workers focused on his core policy agenda are deemed essential. For example, the vast majority of immigration enforcement operations will continue as usual, while trade officials working in the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative will maintain 60% of its staff to continue hammering out tariff deals.

On Capitol Hill, Senate Republicans once again proposed a short-term stopgap that would turn the lights back on until November, allowing time for a broader deal. However, Democrats once again voted it down, 55-45. The Senate is not expected to convene again until Friday, so it’s almost certain to drag on at least until the weekend.
Cuts coming: Office of Management and Budget head Ross Vought instructed federal agencies last week, before the shutdown, to begin making plans for mass layoffs. On Wednesday, Vought told House Republicans that the administration would start terminating employees within the next day or two. 
Essentially, they argue that if your job is considered non-essential, why are taxpayers employing you to begin with? It’s unclear just how many federal workers would be laid off under that plan, but if nothing else, it could incentivize Democrat leaders to reach a deal and avoid mass government layoffs.

Topline: The Daily Wire delves into the background of Ian Roberts, who previously served as superintendent of the Des Moines Public Schools before being arrested for allegedly being in the United States without authorization. He has since resigned from his post, and some alarming information about his immigration history has surfaced.
Sources within the federal government recently shared with The Daily Wire that on a previous immigration application, Roberts declared that he had six children with five different women and that three of those kids were born within a year of each other. That application for immigration status was subsequently rejected.
Additionally, U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services shared more information about his hiring for the superintendent role, telling The Daily Wire that Roberts hasn&#8217;t been checked through the federal E-Verify employment eligibility system for more than a decade. They also stated that the school district hasn&#8217;t utilized the program.
If it had, district officials would have known that Roberts lied about being a citizen on his I-9 employment verification form.
Feds take a look: The Department of Justice has launched a civil rights investigation into the school district&#8217;s DEI hiring practices, as Roberts is black and a native of Guyana.
The DOJ says it is looking into whether the school district engaged &#8220;in employment practices that discriminate based on race, color, and national origin.&#8221;
According to its website, the district requires that its teaching and learning staff match the student population in terms of “demographics and cultural responsivity.” It also set specific quotas for “increas[ing] the number of teachers of color” in an affirmative action plan. Its staff retention strategy prioritizes “lift[ing] up voices of our People of Color” and “creat[ing] a safer environment for People of Color.” The school district also operates the “3D Coalition” project, a recruitment and hiring program for “aspiring minority teachers.”

Topline: The Canadian federal government has started the rollout of its controversial gun buyback program following sweeping bans of what it describes as “assault style weapons”. 
In 2020, after a Nova Scotia man went on a deadly shooting spree, then-Prime Minister Justin Trudeau used executive authority to add more than 1,500 firearm models to the nation’s prohibited list, effectively banning the sale and ownership of entire classifications of firearms that were previously allowed.
Parliament passed firearm reform laws decades ago. Those laws essentially gave the prime minister’s cabinet authority to decide which specific firearms are banned. Because of the prime minister’s power to hire and fire his cabinet at will, he has broad authority and ability to enact sweeping gun bans almost unilaterally.
Iffy enforcement: A large-scale ban like this poses a logistical nightmare for enforcement. Not only does it ban the sale of many firearms, but it also makes possibly hundreds of thousands of currently owned firearms illegal.
The government offered an amnesty period of two years in which gun owners could surrender their firearms, but that period was repeatedly extended due to a lack of compliance. In the meantime, the Canadian government put a freeze on the sale of all handguns. Now that the amnesty period is coming to a close, the government is showing no intention of any further extensions and is beginning to crack down in full force. 
The buyback program: A pilot program has been rolled out in Nova Scotia, where owners of the now-illegal firearms can turn them in to the police for a reimbursement of $400-$700, depending on the model. The plan is to expand the program nationwide soon.
Government officials insist on referring to the program as a “voluntary buy-back” program. In reality, the only choice Canadian gun owners are offered is to turn in their guns, destroy them, or be in violation of the law and theoretically have their weapons confiscated in the future and possibly face criminal charges.
It’s not a complete ban, but it’s about as far as the prime minister could go. The laws surrounding the prime minister’s authority still contain language intended to protect sportsmen. Theoretically, guns commonly used for hunting should be protected, but the language is vague. The ban is said to focus on “assault style weapons,” a term that is not clearly defined either in Canadian law or in the firearm industry. It’s typically used in the context of semi-automatic firearms such as AR-15 or AK-style rifles, but these bans go far beyond those. The order bans carbines that fire pistol rounds, 22-caliber semi-autos, and many guns that aren’t semi-automatic at all, including large caliber bolt action rifles and many pump action shotguns.

The Trump administration instructed government agencies and departments to proceed with an “orderly shutdown” as the Senate failed to pass a short-term government spending bill on Tuesday night. 
Office of Management and Budget Director Russ Vought sent a memo to the heads of all executive departments and agencies on Tuesday, telling them to implement shutdown plans and blaming the shutdown on Senate Democrats. The Senate fell five votes short of passing a Republican-backed bill that would have maintained government spending for the next seven weeks.
“Unfortunately, Democrat Senators are blocking passage of [the funding bill] in the Senate due to Democrats’ insane policy demands, which include $1 trillion in new spending,” Vought wrote. “President Trump supports passage of H.R. 5371, but it is now clear that Democrats will prevent passage of this clean [continuing resolution] prior to 11:59pm tonight and force a government shutdown. As such, affected agencies should now execute their plans for an orderly shutdown.”

HR 5371, which would have maintained government funding at the level of the previous fiscal year, passed out of the House last month. 
“It is unclear how long Democrats will maintain their untenable posture, making the duration of the shutdown difficult to predict,” Vought wrote. “Regardless, employees should report to work for their next regularly scheduled tour of duty to undertake orderly shutdown activities. We will issue another memorandum indicating that government functions should resume once the President has signed a bill providing for appropriations.”

Vought stated that the OMB would provide further guidance to department heads as needed. 
Ahead of the shutdown, Vought <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/trump-admin-plans-federal-job-cuts-as-dems-threaten-shutdown-over-1-5-trillion-leftist-wish-list">issued</a> a memo instructing agencies and departments to prepare for significant reductions in force if a shutdown were to occur. The memo also stated that once funding is secured for the next fiscal year, agencies should move to “retain the minimal number of employees necessary to carry out statutory functions.”
The Senate is slated to reconvene on Wednesday morning to resume voting on government funding.

If Democrats in the Senate continue to block a short-term government funding plan, a program that allows low-income and Medicare patients to be treated at home rather than in a hospital will expire, the White House warns. 
The Acute Hospital Care at Home Initiative enables hospitals to obtain approval to treat Medicare patients with conditions such as respiratory diseases or bacterial infections at home. The program, which was rolled out during the COVID-19 pandemic, is set to expire on September 30 unless reauthorized by Congress.
Around 1,200 Medicare patients per month currently benefit from the program, according to information provided to The Daily Wire by the Office of Management and Budget. The program has been well-received by both patients and healthcare providers, <a href="https://www.cms.gov/newsroom/fact-sheets/fact-sheet-report-study-acute-hospital-care-home-initiative">according</a> to evaluations from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.

“Democrats are trying to shut down the government to pacify their base, and they don’t care who they hurt in the process — including beneficiaries receiving hospital care at home,” a Trump administration official told The Daily Wire. “This program has been a success and is popular with patients and providers.” 
“While Republicans voted to extend it, Democrats are more than happy to harm these patients and force them out of their homes so that they can shut the government down,” the administration official added. 
The program was included in the short-term spending package passed by the House last week, which continues federal spending as is for seven weeks. However, Democrats are blocking the same bill from passing in the Senate. 
As of Friday, 48,955 patients have benefited from the program, and 419 hospitals across 39 states have approved participation in the program, according to the Office of Management and Budget. 
Commonly treated conditions under the program include heart failure, blood poisoning, respiratory disease, pneumonia, bacterial infection, urinary tract infection, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.
Early evaluation of the program indicates generally lower mortality and readmission rates for patients treated at home. 
If a shutdown occurs, the Office of Management and Budget has directed federal agencies to prepare for permanent reduction-in-force plans, indicating that widespread firings could be forthcoming across the federal government. President Donald Trump has said that the Democrats are holding the funding hostage by trying to force taxpayer funding for illegal alien healthcare and transgender surgeries on children.

The Trump administration is backing four Republican proposals that would bring law and order to Washington, D.C., according to an official White House document obtained by The Daily Wire. 
The proposals for law enforcement in the nation’s capital range from tightening up sentencing guidelines for youth offenders to freeing up police from bureaucratic restrictions, according to an official <a href="https://dw-wp-production.imgix.net/2025/09/SAP-DC-Bills-9.16.25.pdf">statement of policy</a> released Tuesday by the Office of Management and Budget. In recent weeks, crime has dropped in D.C. after President Donald Trump surged federal law enforcement to the district to crack down on the rampant crime that has long plagued the Democrat-controlled city. 
The statement from the Office of Management and Budget says that the bills would “advance the President’s law and order agenda in Washington, D.C. Citizens, tourists, and visitors are no longer afraid to dine and enjoy the scenery of America’s Federal city. By enacting these bills, criminals will be held accountable and police officers will be empowered with the resources necessary to ensure safety.”
The first bill referenced in the document is the DC CRIMES Act. This bill, sponsored by Rep. Byron Donalds (R-FL), would decrease the maximum age that a criminal could be sentenced as a youth offender from 24 to 18. It would also mandate that the attorney general of D.C. establish a publicly accessible portal tracking juvenile crime, and it would block the D.C. council from enacting changes to criminal liability sentencing guidelines. 
The second bill, the District of Columbia Juvenile Sentencing Reform Act, was introduced by Rep. Brandon Gill (R-TX) and would allow those 14 and older to be charged as adults for violent crimes like armed robbery and murder. 
“This bill would be a critical step to bring more accountability in a city where more than fifty percent of carjackings are committed by minors,” the Office of Management and Budget said. 
The third bill, introduced by Rep. Clay Higgins (R-LA), called the District of Columbia Policing Protection Act, would allow police officers in the district to chase after criminals who flee by car. Current policies in D.C. ban police from chasing after most criminals suspected of non-violent offenses. 
“These unnecessary restrictions ensure that many criminals get away without punishment and police officers are unable to perform their duties to protect the public. This bill would change that policy and allow officers to pursue any suspect by motor vehicle if they deem it necessary and the most effective means to capture the suspect,” the Trump administration wrote. 
The fourth bill would give Trump the ability to nominate judges for the district at his own discretion rather than from a list provided by “radical left-wing commissioners.” Named the District of Columbia Judicial Nominations Reform Act, the bill was introduced by Reps. Higgins and Pete Sessions (R-TX). 
“After the President’s successful efforts to quell crime and enforce law and order in the Federal capital, it is time to enhance these efforts by enacting these bills into law,” the Trump administration said.
