A renewed commitment to the Moon, Mars, and American leadership can define the next great era of national achievement.
With President Trump and Jared Isaacman pointing the way, the United States has a chance to lead humanity beyond Earth once again.
After decades of drift, America is finally preparing to reclaim its place at the forefront of space exploration.
For the first time in 50 years, Americans are traveling to the Moon and beyond.
No one should understate the importance of this decision to venture into the solar system beyond near-Earth orbit.
The recent announcements about the Moon, Mars, and beyond by NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman and the statements and executive orders of President Donald J. Trump are clear signals that America is back on track to carry freedom into space.
This is an important, indeed vital shift from the policies of the last half-century.
America met President John F. Kennedy’s challenge to go to the Moon by the end of the ‘60s — with landings beginning in 1969 and continuing through 1972. Then, the country sadly turned its back on the Moon and settled into a focus on low Earth orbit for a variety of commercial, national security, and scientific activities. During that half-century, we learned an amazing amount about how to operate close to the Earth, and our lives are impacted every minute of every day by these activities. For example, you would not have a cell phone in your pocket were it not for our innovations in low Earth orbit.
However, after the last American left the Moon in 1972, we neglected to invest in the kind of program that would have maintained the momentum of the Apollo program.
In President Trump’s first term, he indicated clearly how strongly he was committed to having America lead in space. He resurrected the National Space Council and then-Vice President Mike Pence did a great job bringing together every element of the Space community. President Trump created a Space Force dedicated to developing American military superiority in space and across the planet.
After a four-year period of neglect under President Joe Biden, the second Trump administration focused once again on pioneering in space and growing commercial opportunities in low Earth orbit.
By picking Isaacman to be the head of NASA, President Trump reached out to a unique and remarkable person. Isaacman had been a successful entrepreneur and was worth well over a billion dollars. He was also passionate about space and had spent a considerable amount to fly into space twice as a customer of SpaceX. He is the only civilian who has completed a space walk outside the International Space Station.
Because Isaacman is a visionary and an entrepreneurial manager, he has already begun to create a new, dramatically more powerful set of goals for NASA. The recent briefing outlined a permanent return to the Moon, the first voyages to preposition equipment on Mars for human development, and the high priority of building a nuclear-powered rocket (which will radically reduce travel time beyond the Moon). These are big, decisive investments in moving freedom into the solar system.
Artemis II will take four astronauts further into space than anyone has ever gone before. Soon, its larger successor, SpaceX’s Starship will revolutionize travel beyond the Earth.
As big as Artemis II is (a little more powerful than the huge Saturn rockets which carried our first manned space flights) it will be dwarfed by Starship.
As a SpaceX customer, Isaacman understands the power of Elon Musk’s determination to get things to work. The SpaceX development of reusable rockets collapsed the price of putting satellites in orbit by 90 percent. This was possibly the biggest affordability breakthrough of the last generation. Today about half of all launches in the world are SpaceX. Starship will be an even greater revolution.
Starship will launch 100 passengers or 100 tons of cargo — and will be usable repeatedly.
The Artemis II launch was the wake-up call that America is back.
This time we are not just going to visit the Moon. This time we are going to develop the Moon as usable property and learn how to get hydrogen out of the water ice which has turned out to be surprisingly abundant. Mastering in-situ resource manufacturing skills will be essential for future missions to Mars.
This time we are not just going to send clever robotic vehicles to the surface of Mars. We are going to land and begin to learn how to terraform and evolve Mars into a more hospitable, productive, and survivable environment.
There was one seeming mishap on the opening days of Artemis II, which — if looked at properly — is a sign of how far we have come.
The toilet suddenly stopped working.
Since it was a $30 million toilet, the first reaction was bad jokes and great skepticism.
Then, as the story came out, it was clear how far we had come in putting humans in space. Artemis II is the first vehicle going beyond low Earth orbit to have a toilet. It is the first time astronauts have a private room. The challenges of relieving oneself in space are enormous (think zero gravity and your imagination will do the rest). The original true pioneers in the Apollo program had astonishingly primitive systems and at times found it embarrassing.
Nevertheless, the toilet is now fixed, the mission continues, and it’s amazing how far we have come — and will go.
As Isaacman warned us, the Chinese are aggressive and serious competitors. They would like to make totalitarianism the standard across the solar system.
We are now on track to carry freedom everywhere, and Congress and the American people must rise to the occasion.
The future is now — if we are prepared to grab it.

It seems the United States is at war with Iran’s religious dictatorship.
Starting the war was the right thing to do. But it is important to remember that starting a war is only the first step towards winning a war.
The United States has learned this lesson before.
In Korea, we fought to a tie. In Vietnam, we lost after a long, painful war that cost more than 55,000 American lives and brought a wave of refugees to America. In Iraq, we defeated Saddam Hussein’s dictatorship only to be bogged down in an arduous struggle for control.
In Afghanistan, we fought for 22 years and lost.
To win the campaign against the Iranian regime, we must think through the endgame to ensure we have understood the necessary components of winning. The key lies not in defeating the Iranian dictatorship, but in replacing it.
Bombing can do a fair amount to make the Iranian dictatorship more vulnerable, but winning the war will require occupying the ground. However, for President Donald Trump to hold his political coalition together, it is crucial the United States not commit ground forces to Iran.
Frankly, this is also a matter of prudence. Iran is more than twice the size of Texas and home to 90 million people. There is no circumstance in which the United States should attempt to occupy that much land — or police that many people.
As we learned in Iraq, when Americans are too close in proximity to the local population, there is a good chance our presence will irritate the locals and make success more difficult.
So, to effectively replace the Iranian dictatorship, we must mobilize the Iranian people.
One asset we have to this end is the Iranian community in the United States and Europe. There are between 500,000 and one million Iranians living in the United States. Many of them fled when the religious dictatorship replaced the Shah. Because so many of the Iranians who came to America were well educated and hard working, they have generally been successful. The Sunday Guardian listed 10 wealthy Iranians in America whose combined worth exceeds $27 billion.
There are several organizations that have organized against the religious dictatorship. Maryam Rajavi and Reza Pahlavi, son of the Shah, are two examples of leaders who have large followings and could play a significant role in organizing the Iranian people to replace the mullahs.
Bing West has suggested we simply drop a million rifles into the country and allow the people to liberate themselves. The Kurds in the northern part of Iran are already well organized. As the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps is destroyed by airpower, the Kurds will be serious contenders for power in their region.
When you remember that Persians constitute about 61% of the Iranian population, there are clearly large elements with no loyalty to Tehran who could be mobilized.
The United States and its allies can do a lot to break up the dictatorship. However, we should be incredibly disciplined in keeping our commitment to airpower, weapons, and money — while insisting that all ground fighting be done by the Iranian people. Let them liberate their own country, and in the process earn the right to form a free, open government inclusive of all the elements of Iranian society.
Winning the war is much more important than starting it. We need to focus on the steps necessary to replace the dictatorship — not just the steps necessary to destroy it.

Pennsylvania Democratic Sen. John Fetterman, breaking with his party once again, said he favors the United States intervening in Iran against the tyrannical regime that is reportedly brutally murdering its own citizens in order to retain power.
“The ruthless Iranian regime has been callously slaughtering civilians who aren’t even involved in the nationwide anti-government protests, horrified witnesses said — as the death toll surged on Tuesday to roughly 2,000,” The New York Post <a href="https://nypost.com/2026/01/13/world-news/iran-is-now-slaughtering-civilians-who-arent-involved-in-anti-regime-protests-witnesses-warn-as-death-toll-surges-into-the-thousands/">reported</a>. “Chilling eyewitness accounts of the bloodshed started emerging late Monday after Iranians were finally able to make international calls after authorities cut the country’s internet supply as part of its merciless crackdown.”
On Monday, speaking of possible strikes on Iran, Fetterman said on CNN, “Those strikes make sense, absolutely. I do support those things. &#8230; I&#8217;m saying I&#8217;m open to that. And I am actually inspired by the real kinds of courage that those protesters in Iran are demonstrating now. “
“So I don&#8217;t know why we can&#8217;t all want to support that to back them and now bring that awful regime to its knees,” he continued. “Now, that&#8217;s where it&#8217;s at right now. They&#8217;re so desperate. They killed the internet, and now they&#8217;re mowing down their own citizens. Now they&#8217;re even so desperate, offering six dollars a month as some kind of a payoff now, too. Now for me, I think we can all agree that the world would be better, safer and more just if you could break that regime.”

Fetterman’s rhetoric echoed the words of former Speaker of the House and eminent historian Newt Gingrich, who bluntly stated on X, “It is not enough to sympathize with the Iranian people in their struggle to get free from the dictatorship which is clearly killing dissidents and fighting for its very survival. It is not enough to have government leaders publicly talking about support for the Iranian people but failing to do anything real. It is also not enough to send token support but fail to take the steps necessary to replace the dictatorship. In a few weeks either the dictatorship will be gone or the Iranian people will have been defeated and suppressed and a campaign to find the ringleaders and kill them will have begun.”
“There is no middle ground,” he continued. “The goal of every western [sic] leader should be to destroy the Iranian dictatorship at this moment of its vulnerability. Nothing will do more to move the Middle East toward peace, safety, and prosperity than the destruction of the Ayatollah’s dictatorship. The time to act is NOW.”

Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich (R-GA) is set to warn lawmakers about a “potential judicial coup d’etat” during a congressional hearing about overreaching federal judges on Tuesday, according to prepared remarks obtained by The Daily Wire. 
Gingrich will appear at a joint hearing of two House Judiciary Committee subcommittees to testify about the American judicial system and possible remedies to the sweeping judicial orders that have blocked much of President Donald Trump’s agenda. From the firing of probationary workers to the deportations of suspected gang members, federal judges have issued a series of sweeping injunctions restricting the Trump administration’s actions. 
“There is clearly a potential constitutional crisis involving the Judicial Branch’s effort to fully override the Legislative and Executive branches,” a draft of Gingrich’s remarks says. “Fifteen District Judges effectively seized control of various Executive Branch duties in the first six weeks of the current presidency through nationwide injunctions. This is potentially a judicial coup d’etat. It clearly violates the Constitution and more than 200 years of American history.”
Gingrich will appear alongside Heritage Foundation Legal Scholar Paul Larkin and Tren de Aragua victim Cindy Romero during the hearing, which will take place before the Subcommittee on the Constitution and Limited Government and the Subcommittee on Courts, Intellectual Property, Artificial Intelligence, and the Internet.
In his prepared testimony, Gingrich notes that the 15 nationwide injunctions issued against the Trump administration since January 20, 2025, are already more than the six that were issued against George W. Bush, the 12 against Barack Obama, and the 14 against Joe Biden during their time in office. 
According to Gingrich, 92% of the injunctions against Trump have come at the hands of judges appointed by Democratic presidents. 
“The notion that unelected lawyers can micromanage the Executive Branch – and override a Commander in Chief who received 77.3 million votes – should trouble every American,” Gingrich writes.
The former House speaker will call for Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts to intervene and establish a rule that would require any nationwide injunction issued by a lower court to immediately go to Supreme Court review. 
Gingrich also urged the lawmakers to pass the “No Rogue Rulings Act,” a bill that would restrict judges to only issuing injunctions that apply to the specific parties of the case being heard. The bill was introduced by Rep. Darrell Issa (R-CA), who chairs the subcommittee on the Constitution and Limited Government alongside Rep. Chip Roy (R-TX). 
A copy of Larkin’s written statement obtained by The Daily Wire indicates that he will focus on the history of the courts in America and judicial practice. 
“The practice of entering nationwide injunctions against the federal government in any case not properly certified as a nationwide class action is both unlawful and Unwise,” a draft of Larkin’s remarks says. “Neither the Constitution, the Judicial Code, nor common-law principles of issue or claim preclusion authorizes a federal court to award relief to individuals who are not parties to a particular ‘Case’ or ‘Controversy.’”
The Trump administration has repeatedly requested the Supreme Court intervene in its battles against federal district court judges. So far, the court has been largely silent, except to reverse a court order instructing the administration to pay out $2 billion to foreign aid contractors.

WASHINGTON—Donald Trump doesn’t deliver a conventional speech, and he’s explained why.
&#8220;If you just read a teleprompter, nobody’s going to be very excited,” Trump explained to Joe Rogan. “You’ve got to weave it out, otherwise, it’s no good.”
The “weave,” as Trump calls it, is the president’s way of jumping from topic to topic in what may seem to the uninitiated as rambling. In reality, Trump says, it’s all artfully strung together to capture the audience and comes together at the end in a strong statement. And on a night like tonight, when Trump is expected to touch on topics ranging from negotiating peace between Russia and Ukraine to his stand against transgenderism, it’s a valuable talent to have. 
Whether it’s the weave or his other unconventional tactics, there’s no doubt that Trump’s rhetorical style is unlike anything we’ve seen in the White House in decades. According to Matthew Continetti, Trump is the “most effective presidential communicator” that most Americans have ever seen. 
&#8220;I think in many Americans&#8217; lifetimes, he&#8217;s the most effective presidential communicator,” said Continetti, author of The Right: The Hundred-Year War for American Conservatism and director of Domestic Policy Studies at the American Enterprise Institute. “When he&#8217;s in these big moments, he always delivers a very commanding performance.&#8221;

Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich told The Daily Wire that Trump views his big speeches as a sort of focus group, listening carefully to see how his audiences respond to messaging, constantly improving and testing out his ideas and language.
“People consistently forget he spent 13 years doing commercial television on The Apprentice,” Gingrich said. “He knows a great deal about how to communicate. Probably as much as any president in American history. And he understands that whatever he thinks, he has to say it in a way that you can hear it and you can understand it, or it doesn&#8217;t work.&#8221;
“If he wants to educate you,” Gingrich added, “he&#8217;s got to keep you entertained.”
Daily Wire host Michael Knowles, however, says it’s more than just entertainment — he says Trump is a serious orator.
“President Trump commands the English language more effectively than any politician in my lifetime,” Knowles said. “In speeches and insults alike, Trump consistently employs poetic diction — to borrow a phrase from Barfield — and the lessons taught by Orwell in ‘Politics and the English Language.’ Trump’s opponents mock his word choice, but Trump’s sturdy, Saxon rhetoric reveals he really does know &#8216;the best words.&#8217;”
Trump will have to draw on all those rhetorical gifts Tuesday, as he delivers what is essentially the first State of the Union address of his second term. Trump<a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/must-see-tv-heres-what-to-expect-from-president-trumps-joint-address-to-congress"> will begin</a> by outlining what his administration has accomplished thus far, the White House said Monday, before outlining his plans to fix the economy, end the illegal immigration crisis, and resolve global conflicts.
As with an official State of the Union, Trump will be speaking directly to lawmakers, Supreme Court justices, and other luminaries. But he’ll also be addressing the millions of Americans who view the speech.
The latter audience is who matters most to Trump, according to former White House speechwriter Mary Kate Cary.
“We&#8217;ve seen presidents do this before, where the reaction in the room isn&#8217;t that great, but outside the room, whether it&#8217;s the press corps or social media, is far bigger and far more reactive to what he&#8217;s saying,” said Cary, who worked for President George H.W. Bush. “Depending on what the topic is tonight. It could be to his advantage in a lot of ways to figure out how to play one audience differently than the other audience.” 
Gingrich had a similar take, noting that the president has a &#8220;very deep feel for the audience.” He also predicted that if Democrats attempt to disrupt the speech — as they have done in years past, and are <a href="https://www.axios.com/2025/03/04/trump-congress-address-democrats-disrupt-plan">reportedly</a> planning to do again — Trump will likely already have things to say and ways to &#8220;dominate the scene.”
“If you&#8217;re the president, you have huge advantages in a setting like that,&#8221; Gingrich said.
What kind of speech Trump gives Tuesday may come largely down to whether or not he sticks to the script. As Cary noted, Trump’s speechwriters “have a very different job than typical presidential speechwriters because he&#8217;s not a career politician, and yet he is very good at keeping his finger on the pulse of what&#8217;s going on in America.”
To Cary, Trump’s “off-the-cuff” rallies are even more effective than his formal speeches. She pointed to some high-profile Trump moments from the election cycle as examples of how impactful the president’s actions are, even when he’s not delivering remarks: Trump shaking his fist after an assassination attempt and urging the crowd to “fight, fight, fight,” or the memorable garbage truck appearance in the neon vest.
“Those were not highly-wordsmithed, oratorical moments,” she noted.
Continetti suggests that Trump&#8217;s speechwriters have adjusted to the president&#8217;s speaking habits over the past decade, giving him more room to weave when he pleases. But Trump largely stuck to the script in February 2020, when he delivered the State of the Union address of his first term. He mostly highlighted his administration&#8217;s accomplishments and stressed the extraordinary opportunity to be found in the United States.
&#8220;America is the place where anything can happen,&#8221; Trump said. &#8220;America is the place where anyone can rise.  And here, on this land, on this soil, on this continent, the most incredible dreams come true.” 
But though he was scripted, Trump still managed to stir the crowd, particularly in an emotional and memorable moment when he honored Rush Limbaugh, who died a year later, with the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
“This nation is our canvas, and this country is our masterpiece,” Trump said. “We look at tomorrow and see unlimited frontiers just waiting to be explored. Our brightest discoveries are not yet known.  Our most thrilling stories are not yet told. Our grandest journeys are not yet made.  The American Age, the American Epic, the American adventure has only just begun.&#8221;
“It would be difficult for Trump to improve upon” that address, said Mollie Hemingway, editor-in-chief of The Federalist. Hemingway pointed to that address as evidence that Trump  “has always been understood better by average Americans than Washington elites.” That’s why, Hemingway noted, &#8220;Pelosi tore up that speech and Democrats seethed in response to it.&#8221;

Heritage Foundation President Kevin Roberts echoed Hemingway’s point, telling The Daily Wire that “the elites fixate on President Trump’s rhetoric because they’re terrified of his results.”
“He’s delivering,” Roberts said, “securing the border, crushing wokeness, and putting America First.”
“Trump’s rhetoric resonates with everyday Americans because he’s fighting for their interests.”
It may not resonate with some members of his immediate audience. Axios <a href="https://www.axios.com/2025/03/04/trump-congress-address-democrats-disrupt-plan">reports</a> that Democrats may walk out if Trump defends children against transgender procedures or other hot button topics. Some members may even bring noise makers and empty egg cartons as props. 
“It’ll be interesting to see how Trump reacts to that,” Cary said, recalling how Rep. Marjorie Taylor Green (R-GA) stood up at the last State of the Union and <a href="https://apnews.com/article/laken-riley-biden-speech-immigration-d756dbe1c499c6fd0fc53be04290b371">called upon</a> former President Joe Biden to say the name of Laken Riley, a young woman murdered by an illegal immigrant.
Biden did “say her name,” though he mispronounced it, drawing even more fiery criticism.
Gingrich said that a potential Trump response to Democrat disturbance depends on “whether they’re just totally obnoxious or not.” 
“Reagan was very good at this. There are ways you can turn and you can pose questions to them,” he said. “If [Trump] wants to, he can do that, and again, he has the advantage…I think the burden is on Speaker Johnson to just remove them from the room.”
Though Continetti suspects Trump will stick to his script tonight, he also notes that the president’s not scheduled to depart the Capitol until around 11:30 p.m., two and a half hours after his speech is expected to begin.
“That&#8217;s plenty of time for a weave-like speech,&#8221; he said.

The former Republican Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich says that &#8220;all the anger about illegal immigration&#8221; pushed him to publicly make the case for the importance of legal immigration, he told The Daily Wire.
Gingrich, along with his wife Callista Gingrich, is set to release a documentary on the value of legal immigration to the United States next month. He says the idea is to highlight immigrant stories that made the country a better place.
&#8220;Callista and I wanted to make the case for legal immigration with all of the anger about illegal immigration. We wanted a diverse range of people and people who would be plainly recognized,&#8221; Gingrich explained, later adding, &#8220;Some of them are great personal stories but not necessarily historic — but still unique in what they contributed to America. Some contribute in sort of an everyday way, some in more of a historic way.&#8221;
The documentary comes amid heated debate over immigration in the United States, both legal and illegal, even within the Republican Party. With Donald Trump set to retake the White House and secure the border, there is a significant amount of debate over other immigration restrictions, including worker visa programs that aim to bring in high-skilled workers to aid the U.S. economy. Critics say it takes jobs away from Americans, even if they&#8217;re capable of doing the job.
Gingrich told The Daily Wire that he and his wife carefully selected the stories of several immigrants to highlight for the upcoming PBS documentary, &#8220;Journey to America: With Newt and Callista Gingrich.&#8221; It will highlight, among others, the stories of renowned theoretical physicist Albert Einstein of Germany, Catholic missionary Francesca Cabrini of Italy, and famous actress — and inventor — Hedy Lamarr of Austria.

&#8220;For me, the most interesting piece was Hedy Lamarr. I knew of her as an actress but not how much she had contributed as an inventor even while she was working in Hollywood,&#8221; Gingrich said. &#8220;As we developed the script, I realized that she had contributed technology we still use in our cell phones today.&#8221;
Lamarr, who starred alongside Hollywood heavyweights Jimmy Stewart, Judy Garland, and Lana Turner in 1941&#8217;s &#8220;Ziegfeld Girl,&#8221; is also responsible for pioneering the technology that is still used as the basis for WiFi, GPS, and Bluetooth communications.
Gingrich said that the overall message they meant to share was a simple one: &#8220;The message is to have a real sense of pride that we are a nation that has had an open door for people to enter legally, and we have been remarkably enriched by the people who have come here and have contributed greatly to our society in many different ways.&#8221;
&#8220;It’s totally appropriate to be against illegal immigration, but we don’t want that to become being against legal immigration,&#8221; Gingrich added, drawing a hard line between supporting legal immigration and simply allowing people to cross the border unchecked. &#8220;America is a very unique and successful country because of legal immigration &#8230; You can enrich your country without having it overrun by people who break the law.&#8221;
Gingrich mentioned the late British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, saying that she&#8217;d once referred to the United States as a &#8220;contract country&#8221; — and added, &#8220;[That is] the great genius of the American system — you can come here, but then you have to become an American.&#8221;
The documentary is set to premiere on January 14 at 10pm ET.

On Monday, former House Speaker Newt Gingrich (R-GA), an erudite historian, praised President-elect Donald Trump as unique and called him &#8220;a mythic figure.”
Gingrich, who has a PhD in <a href="https://www.georgiaencyclopedia.org/articles/government-politics/newt-gingrich-b-1943/">European history</a> and has written numerous books, including many historical novels, made his comments on Fox News.

“He now represents, clearly, something like, according to the latest Rasmussen poll — 55% of the American people believe that he, in fact, got a clear mandate,” he continued. “Only 32% don’t agree, so he’s beginning to build almost a 2 to 1 margin that this is the leader of the American nation.”

In September 2023, Gingrich <a href="https://www.washingtonexaminer.com/news/2574808/obama-is-driving-force-in-white-house-amid-bidens-cognitive-collapse-newt-gingrich/">stated</a> that he believed former President Barack Obama was running the Biden administration.
Gingrich made the remarks during a Fox News interview on &#8220;Hannity.&#8221;
“He has a pretty decent life and it doesn&#8217;t occur to him that all these other things that are piling up in a way that will be an absolute disaster for the Democratic Party,” Gingrich predicted accurately. “My personal guess is the driving force behind the Biden administration is Barack Obama. Obama is the only president since Woodrow Wilson to stay in Washington, and in Wilson&#8217;s case, he stayed because he had a severe stroke and he could not be moved.”
“So the fact that Obama is here all the time, the fact that his staff permeates, literally permeates the Biden administration and Obama is really, really smart,” he continued. “Whatever Biden&#8217;s problems are at being kind of slow and cognitively decaying, Obama doesn&#8217;t have any of those problems. “When the leadership of Hamas says, ‘not a single Jew will remain,’ I think that’s really clear, and Israel should take it seriously. Gingrich: ‘Israel’s Survival And America’s Survival Are Linked’

Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich (R-GA) blames the current House GOP dysfunction on Rep. Matt Gaetz of Florida.
Gingrich appeared on Fox News on Friday with host Laura Ingraham to bemoan the chaos that has fractured the House Republican caucus and which threatens to oust the second Republican speaker since October. He said trouble within the caucus has contributed to a series of early departures within the GOP that has made its slight majority even smaller.
“We shouldn’t underestimate how bad what Matt Gaetz did was for the whole system. He unleashed the demons. He went after somebody who had raised $480 million, had gained seats for three elections in a row. He drove Kevin McCarthy out of office,” Gingrich said, according to <a href="https://www.mediaite.com/tv/newt-gingrich-blames-matt-gaetz-after-mtgs-motion-to-vacate-johnson-he-unleashed-the-demons/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Mediaite</a>. “From that point on, it has been a disaster.”
Gaetz led a revolt of a small group of Republican House members against former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy in October, ousting the Republican leader from the speaker’s chair. The rebellion threw the House GOP into chaos for a short time, after which Rep. Mike Johnson of Louisiana was voted to take up the speaker’s gavel. At the time, Gaetz accused McCarthy of cutting secret deals with Democrats and undermining House conservatives.
“I don’t blame [House Speaker Mike Johnson.] I think Speaker Johnson has a hand that’s virtually impossible to play. And that’s where I think some of the people just make it worse,” Gingrich said.
Gingrich went on to say that the disarray among House Republicans emphasizes the need to elect former President Donald Trump back to the White House in November and give Trump and Republicans a large majority to govern in Congress.
“When I was speaker, I had a lot more ability than Johnson did to run the house, because I had a big enough majority, you could have five or 10 people who were crazy and you can still govern,” Gingrich said. “[Johnson] doesn’t have a one-vote majority. The fact is there are eight or 10 or 12 people who are going to get up every morning voting no. … So, he really has no majority at all.”
“You have to decide. Sooner or later you’re going to realize the bills have been worse since McCarthy was gone. The Democrats are in greater control. The hard-liners on the right have done nothing except make it worse. The Freedom Caucus right now has been a disaster in public policy terms. If you think your job in life is to grandstand and complain while the other team runs over you, they’re doing a great job,” the former speaker added.

Johnson is now facing threats of removal from within the House GOP caucus after he pushed through the House a $1.2 trillion omnibus spending package last week over dissent from House conservatives. Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) on Friday <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/marjorie-taylor-greene-files-motion-to-oust-mike-johnson-as-house-speaker" target="_blank" rel="noopener">filed</a> a motion to remove the speaker’s gavel from Johnson over his handling of the legislation. Greene <a href="https://www.yahoo.com/news/marjorie-taylor-greene-files-warning-160647542.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a> her resolution was “more of a warning than a pink slip.”
Gaetz defended Johnson last week as House conservatives voiced discontent with the speaker.
“If we vacated this speaker, we’d end up with a Democrat,” Gaetz <a href="https://apnews.com/article/speaker-johnson-motion-vacate-marjorie-taylor-greene-3461bd8b95e718e178132ac16f36562a" target="_blank" rel="noopener">warned</a>. “When I vacated the last one, I made a promise to the country that we would not end up with a Democrat speaker. &#8230; I couldn’t make that promise again today.”

The teaching of U.S. history in public high schools has received much attention in recent years. But what about the teaching of U.S. history at our colleges and universities? 
A <a href="https://cai.asu.edu/americanhistory" target="_blank" rel="noopener">newly released commission report</a> from the Center for American Institutions at Arizona State University presents a bleak picture. The imbalanced design of many introductory U.S. history courses guides impressionable students toward the conclusion that America is a failed experiment, leaving many college students with a starkly negative, narrow, and incomplete view of our country’s character and past.
Introductory courses in U.S. history – typically taught in two sections, the first half to 1877, and the second half since 1877 – play an outsized role in our university systems and have downstream effects on K-12 education. Many institutions require that non-history majors, as well as future K-12 teachers, enroll in the U.S. survey to fulfill General Education requirements. The requirement is perfectly understandable. To become informed citizens in our constitutional, democratic republic, graduates ought to have a well-rounded, basic knowledge of the history of our country. For some students, especially foreign nationals, the U.S. survey will be their first and last exposure to a comprehensive history of the United States.
These facts make the <a href="https://cai.asu.edu/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Center for American Institutions</a> commission all the more concerning. The commission on the Teaching of American History included former Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker, former Oklahoma Governor Mary Fallin, and former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich. Academic researchers for the commission examined syllabi for introductory U.S. history courses at the nation’s top-ranked colleges and universities. The research revealed that foundational topics and themes in U.S. history are frequently absent. Many of the courses were taught through a <a href="https://www.historians.org/research-and-publications/perspectives-on-history/september-2022/is-history-history-identity-politics-and-teleologies-of-the-present" target="_blank" rel="noopener">presentist perspective</a>, examining and interpreting history through the lens of contemporary politics, issues, and concerns. Absent from many of these courses were complexity, nuance, debate, and global context. Instead, many of the courses elevated an overly simplistic assessment of the past, devoid of much of the richness and complexity that characterized each historical period. It would be wrong and misguided if this were pursued in order to paint a false and extravagantly rosy picture of United States history. But in this case, it paints a false and extravagantly negative picture of United States history.
The first half of the U.S. survey, to 1877, covers the colonial period through the Civil War and Reconstruction. One syllabus for the first half of the survey announced that upon completion of the course, students will “grasp how inequality was woven into the nation’s very constitutions.” Another announced that upon completion of the course, students will “see how race and racism is snarled in every part of U.S. history.” Another course at a prestigious state university devoted the first three weeks of the U.S. survey to “ecological imperialism” and “cultural imperialism.” 
“We will spend considerable time learning about major themes that trouble the present-day,” an instructor at the university announced in the syllabus, “including the expropriation of Native American lands; the entwined histories of race, slavery, and freedom; the creation and recreation of gendered economic, political, social relations; and the rise of capitalism.”
The second half of the survey, U.S. history since 1877, is by far the more ideological and biased of the two. Many of the syllabi examined for this study were nakedly political. Most syllabi intensively focused on identity topics of race, gender, sexuality, queer theory, and militant social protest. The predominant takeaway for students in many of these classes was American history as a history of exclusion, chiefly organized around identity.
Neglected topics included basic political history, including various presidential administrations, pivotal elections, and party development. Legal history was generally excluded, as was military history and diplomatic history. Conservatism, of course, was almost universally framed in a negative context. Primary readings from conservative thinkers were rarely assigned.
Absent, also, was any indication that the United States had made real and significant progress on civil rights and race relations in the 20th century. Moreover, there was rarely any indication that the average standard of living, for all people, increased substantially across the twentieth century (better housing, health, education, and technology); instead, students were often fed an anti-market, anti-consumerist narrative about the corrupting effects of capitalism. Social, economic, and technological advancements received virtually no mention; instead, post-World War II America was often portrayed as a period – not of prosperity and expanding freedom – but of greed, decline, sexism, homophobia, and racism.
Many courses ended the semester on a sour note: the “Decline of America” and the “End of the American Empire” were common themes in course syllabi. Students exiting such a course would naturally conclude that the American experiment had failed, that it was never successful, and that drastic, revolutionary activism in the present time might therefore be warranted. Appropriately, the supplemental readings in many of these courses often championed political and social justice activism.
One syllabus, for example, announced that students will learn about the “diversity of American experiences with specific emphasis on race, ethnicity, class, gender, and sexual orientation.” The final weeks of the course included the following topics: “Women’s Lib and Second Wave Feminism,” “Native Americans and Red Power,” “Gay Liberation and LGBTQ Activism,” “Chicano Activism and Latino Movements,” “Environmentalism and Green Movements,” “The Triumph of the Right,” and “From Witch-hunts and Communist-hunts to Terrorist-hunts.” 
Another syllabus at a separate university devoted an entire week to, “Final Frontiers: The Cultural War, LGBTQ Rights, and the Fight against Ablelism.”
Besides sacrificing truth for fiction, the extraordinary bias of our introductory U.S. history courses contributes to the erosion of our civic culture. It undermines the noble effort to create a common, shared vision for America’s future. It distorts our shared past, exacerbates divisions within our society, and discourages a fuller understanding of the entirety of U.S. history.
So what do we do? The report includes several noteworthy suggestions.
First, state legislatures should require educational transparency. Academic units at all public universities should be required to make syllabi publicly available and accessible so that we know what our tax dollars are being used to teach. Most syllabi, at most universities, are not available to the public.
But also we desperately need intellectual diversity. One <a href="https://econjwatch.org/File+download/944/LangbertQuainKleinSept2016.pdf?mimetype=pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">recent study</a> of the nation’s top 40 colleges and universities, for example, found that among History faculty, there are 33.5 Democrats for every single Republican. That is obviously unacceptable and flagrantly unrepresentative of the public and student body. Upper administrations and deans should insist on faculty searches that are not so narrowly tailored that they rule out candidates who are not ideologically aligned with the orthodox political persuasion. Certainly, at a minimum, DEI statements should be immediately abolished as ideological litmus tests.
Finally, a multi-disciplinary approach – including interdisciplinary degree programs with more expansive curricula – could encourage dialogue across the disciplines and potentially foster greater intellectual diversity among the faculty.
The United States of America is a great experiment in freedom, constitutional government, and well-ordered liberty. But the experiment is fragile. To preserve and maintain it – to secure the blessings of liberty to ourselves and our posterity – we must have robust, vibrant American institutions, including institutions of higher education. Let’s reform the teaching of U.S. history at our colleges and universities.

Former Republican House Speaker Newt Gingrich weighed in on the race for his former leadership position over the weekend, saying that a female might be better suited for the role. 
During an <a href="https://twitter.com/FoxNewsSunday/status/1716109978937807153" target="_blank" rel="noopener">appearance</a> on “Fox News Sunday” with host Shannon Bream, Gingrich blasted the eight Republicans who he says “betrayed the conference” by voting to oust former Speaker Kevin McCarthy three weeks ago and said that “right now” his party “can’t govern” because of it. The former speaker said the House Republicans should consider a female for speaker to unite the conference. 
“They need to pick somebody to get stability. I frankly wish that they … had a woman candidate out of all the candidates they’ve got running. You know, somebody like Elise Stefanik or Beth Van Duyne,” Gingrich said. “I think, in some ways, given the level of rowdiness and the level of juvenile behavior, it’s conceivable that a female speaker would be more effective in actually getting them all to get together and stick together,” Gingrich said. 
Rep. Van Duyne has represented Texas&#8217; 24th District since 2021. Rep. Stefanik (R-NY), who serves as the House Republican conference chair, released a <a href="https://twitter.com/RepStefanik/status/1716122991539409393" target="_blank" rel="noopener">list</a> of candidates for speaker at the deadline to announce a candidacy. Nine candidates are <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/9-candidates-set-to-face-off-in-gops-house-speaker-forum" target="_blank" rel="noopener">vying for the role</a>, including Reps. Jack Bergman (MI), Byron Donalds (FL), Tom Emmer (MN), Kevin Hern (OK), Mike Johnson (LA), Dan Meuser (PA), Gary Palmer (AL), Austin Scott (GA), and Pete Sessions (TX). 
When asked about the candidates and the potential for some legislators who might be a “no vote forever and ever,” Gingrich said Republicans have to all gather in the same room to keep meeting and talking to determine who the speaker nominee will be. 
“I’d work backwards,” Gingrich said. “I would do a whip check and say, ‘Who could possibly get 217?&#8217; I don’t care who they are. They don’t have to be candidates right now. It could be the most surprising person. If they can get 217 – and they can keep 217 – make them speaker.” 
Gingrich noted that the previous process of taking the candidate who could get a majority of the conference to the floor of the House, only for them to fail to garner the simple majority needed to become speaker, wasn’t working and should not be the path going forward.

“Who can get 217? That’s the person who ought to be speaker,” Gingrich said. “Trying to start from, ‘Let me pick my favorite and see if they can then get 217&#8242; – you could be here for weeks,” he said, noting that the <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/history/2023/10/11/longest-house-speaker-vote-1856/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">record</a> from 1856 is two months and more than 130 ballots to determine a speaker. 
“I would urge the House Republicans not to try to break that record,” Gingrich said. 
Rep. Steve Scalise (R-LA) initially won the support of the conference but <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/scalise-drops-out-of-speaker-race" target="_blank" rel="noopener">dropped</a> out of the race after failing to secure a simple majority before bringing his name to the floor. Jordan then became the Republican nominee but was <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/house-gop-drops-jordan-as-speaker-nominee" target="_blank" rel="noopener">dropped</a> by the conference after losing three votes on the House floor last week. 
The next internal election for the conference will be held at 9 a.m. ET on Tuesday following a candidate forum on Monday evening, <a href="https://twitter.com/cspan/status/1715442903353278580" target="_blank" rel="noopener">according</a> to Speaker Pro Tempore Patrick McHenry (R-NC).

Former House Speaker <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/newt-gingrich" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Newt Gingrich</a> slammed Republican House members who are holding up passing spending bills to keep the U.S. government running, saying that they are hurting the party and the country by playing games.
Gingrich made the remarks during a Fox News interview with Sean Hannity while discussing the bills that need to be passed.
Gingrich said that House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) was in a tough spot because of some Senate Republicans who want to spend more, a president who wants to spend trillions more, and House Democrats who are not willing to budge on anything.
&#8220;The problem is you got to pass a rule to get it to the floor,&#8221; he said. &#8220;Twice now, different Republicans have decided to stop the bill from going to the floor. Why? Because each one has their own particular need, or their own particular fixation. Now, there are one or two, like Congressman Gaetz, who I think is frankly deranged, who you&#8217;re never gonna get. He hates Kevin, he&#8217;s not going to vote for Speaker McCarthy. He openly says he wants to get rid of him, which is his prerogative. But that means one less vote that Kevin has in order to get things done. The others, I think, are playing a game that could blow up on them.&#8221;
&#8220;In the end, either the House Republicans find a way to talk with themselves, get this sorted out, and pass these things, or you&#8217;re inevitably going to have some coalition with the Democrats with bigger spending further to the left, more radical policies,&#8221; he continued. &#8220;I mean, the world&#8217;s not going to end, though somebody somewhere is going to find a solution. And I think, too, for example, I think Speaker McCarthy yesterday, thought they had the votes, they walked onto the floor. Three members switched who had voted yes the day before, now voted no. I mean this is the sort of stuff when I was Speaker that would have driven me nuts. Luckily, I had a bigger margin. I think it&#8217;s very hard to see right now how this is going to work out; I think it will work out. But it&#8217;s a little hard to see how it&#8217;s gonna work out.&#8221;
Gingrich took a shot at the House Freedom Caucus, who he said were &#8220;cheerfully screwing things up,&#8221; saying that they would eventually cede victory to moderate Republicans.
&#8220;We have a number of members from districts that Joe Biden carried by a good margin, those members can decide in the end, they don&#8217;t want the government to close, they&#8217;re not gonna get punished back home,&#8221; he said. &#8220;They&#8217;re not gonna get beaten in a primary, because they&#8217;re in districts where people are gonna say, &#8216;Yeah, that&#8217;s a smart thing to do.'&#8221;
Gingrich said that some of the Republicans in the House couldn&#8217;t play chess or even checkers and that they would struggle to play tic-tac-toe.

&#8220;I will say the members who are capriciously switching around and playing games aren&#8217;t just hurting the Republican Party, they&#8217;re hurting the country,&#8221; he concluded. &#8220;We need, because they&#8217;re taking the focus off of Biden, this gives the news media a chance to talk about House Republicans not able to do things, rather than talk about all the things that the three committees are finding, or in a positive way, talk about Jody Arrington, and the 20 Republicans who just passed out a balanced budget for the first time since I was Speaker.&#8221;
