The president of the College Republicans of America&#8217;s New York University chapter has resigned after telling the media that first son Barron Trump is an &#8220;oddity on campus&#8221; who keeps to himself.
College Republicans of America (CRA) announced in a statement released Tuesday that NYU chapter president Kaya Walker&#8217;s comments did &#8220;not align with the values and principles upheld&#8221; by the organization.
The statement also said that media outlets Vanity Fair and The Independent &#8220;unfairly framed what was said,&#8221; adding, however, that &#8220;upon review, we still found it to be inappropriate.&#8221;
&#8220;The NYU chapter president submitted her resignation last night,&#8221; CRA said.
CRA posted the announcement of Walker&#8217;s resignation with an invitation for Barron to join the NYU chapter. Barron is a freshman at the school.
&#8220;In response to recent events with our NYU chapter, College Republicans of America formally invites Barron Trump to join us in reshaping the Republican Party,&#8221; the post said.
“Barron Trump represents the future of the conservative movement and we would be honored to have him join College Republicans of America,” CRA president Will Donahue said.

<a href="https://www.instagram.com/vanityfair/p/DGDkpAeRcr5/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">According</a> to a recent Vanity Fair article, Walker said of Barron, “He’s sort of like an oddity on campus. He goes to class, he goes home.”
&#8220;His NYU classmates find him to be as big a mystery as the rest of the world,&#8221; Vanity Fair framed the article. &#8220;Unlike his father, Barron does not speak publicly nor operate a public social media account, which, by all appearances, has only deepened his mystique.&#8221;
Last year, a source <a href="https://people.com/barron-trump-ladies-man-new-york-university-exclusive-8759953" target="_blank" rel="noopener">told</a> PEOPLE magazine that on campus, Barron is a &#8220;ladies&#8217; man for sure.&#8221;
&#8220;He’s tall and handsome. A lot of people seem to think he’s pretty attractive — yes, even liberal people like him,&#8221; the source said.
The reactions to Walker&#8217;s seemingly forced resignation were mixed online, with some agreeing with CRA&#8217;s decision and others arguing that Walker&#8217;s comment was neutral and CRA was &#8220;canceling&#8221; her without good reason.
During the 2024 election, Barron participated in events with his father and was credited with pushing the now-president to go on podcasts younger people frequently listen to.
&#8220;[Barron] was certainly the one that suggested [Trump] go on some of the very young podcasts,&#8221; Barron&#8217;s brother, Eric Trump, told the press after the election.

“Obviously, Joe Rogan is one of the biggest podcasters in the world, so it’s not like this hadn’t occurred to us to go on Joe Rogan, but you know, [Barron] speaks to a different demographic in terms of voter, and now he did certainly suggest a couple of the more millennial, or even younger generation-style, podcasts,&#8221; Eric continued. “Some of those were fantastic.”
“My father did incredibly well with the youth vote, and he picked up segments of the vote that he had never picked up before,&#8221; he added. “And I’m sure a lot of that was attributable to the podcast circuit that he really committed to.”

A professor who is listed on the NYU <a href="https://gallatin.nyu.edu/people/faculty/amh20.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">website</a> as “part-time faculty” and whose LinkedIn profile says he serves as an adjunct professor at The New School of Public Engagement told students that reports of Hamas raping women and beheading babies in the October 7 massacre were false.
Amin Husain spoke at a December 5 “teach-in” organized by Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP) at The New School.
The Free Press obtained a video of Husain’s presentation from <a href="https://twitter.com/_SAFECAMPUS" target="_blank" rel="noopener">S.A.F.E. Campus</a>; reporter Francesca Block <a href="https://www.thefp.com/p/nyu-prof-tells-students-hamas-atrocities-untrueu" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reported</a> that Husain stated, “Don’t take what the media says. &#8230; It’s really important. . . . Because these kind of questions try to put you on the defensive. They try to say. . . ‘Oh my God, you’re supporting rapists and people that behead babies,’ both of which, you know, whatever, we know it’s not true.”
Husain also stated of New York, “We live in a Zionist city. &#8230; No, let’s be real about this, let’s be f***ing real.”
On November 17, Husain spoke at the school, where he <a href="https://www.instagram.com/reel/CzxRKX-t3P9/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">asserted</a> of Israel, “This land isn’t for the Jews.” He added, “When you take [to] the streets, when you break windows, when you care for each other, when money doesn’t mean what they want it to mean, when you figure out how to set different values, when you know how to say to a Zionist ‘no,’ when you take a position even though you know it’ll make your life a little bit more difficult, trust me, it’s worth it. It’s worth it, and it scares the s*** out of them.”

Husain confirmed the accuracy of Canary Mission’s bio, telling the students, “Everything they cite. . . is true.”
A spokesperson for The New School told The Free Press that Husain&#8217;s affiliation with the school ended in 2019, but he had been repeatedly invited to speak by the campus’ SJP.
“The New School chapter of Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP) is entitled to use university space, as are all New School student organizations, for educational activities, and has the right to invite speakers representing various points of views to the university,” the spokesperson stated. “Individuals from The New School who choose to organize or attend these events are in no way speaking for, or representing, the university.”
Husain is a co-founder of Decolonize This Place, an organization that urged protests in 2020 and caused over $100,000 in damages, including vandalized subway stations, according to the <a href="https://nypost.com/2020/02/15/nyu-professor-founded-anarchist-group-that-attacked-subways-last-month/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">New York Post</a>.

A group of Jewish students have filed a lawsuit against New York University (NYU), alleging the school has allowed a climate of anti-Semitism to fester on campus, leaving Jewish students feeling &#8220;under siege.&#8221;
Bella Ingber, Sabrina Maslavi, and Saul Tawil, all juniors, <a href="https://www.reuters.com/legal/nyu-is-sued-by-jewish-students-who-allege-antisemitism-campus-2023-11-14/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">filed</a> their suit on Tuesday in Manhattan federal court.
The lawsuit accuses NYU of violating federal civil rights law by permitting a hostile environment that subjects Jewish students to anti-Semitic discrimination, harassment, and intimidation. Anti-Semitism on campus has increased in the wake of Palestinian terror group Hamas&#8217; attack on Israeli civilians last month, the suit claims.
On October 7, Hamas launched deadly terrorist attacks on Israel that killed more than 1,200 people, including women and children. Israel has responded with airstrikes and a ground offensive.
In recent weeks, mobs of NYU students have chanted “Hitler was right,” and “gas the Jews,” the suit claims. Meanwhile, NYU has refused to enforce anti-discrimination policies it &#8220;readily applies&#8221; to others, the suit also claims. Some faculty have even “enthusiastically endorsed” Hamas&#8217; attack, the plaintiffs said.
Complaints from Jewish students are “ignored, slow-walked, or met with gaslighting” by the administration, the suit says.
“The effect of NYU’s inaction and, indeed, complicity in the torrent of anti-Jewish hatred that has engulfed its campus has been the normalization of antisemitism in the NYU community,” the lawsuit states.
“Whereas pro-Hamas faculty and students are permitted to engage in vicious antisemitic hate speech, Jewish students are told to keep quiet, maintain a low profile, avoid making waves, and call a wellness hotline,” the suit adds.
NYU has pushed back on the suit, saying it looks forward to “challenging this lawsuit’s one-sided narrative.”
“The assertions in this suit do not accurately describe conditions on our campus or the many steps NYU has been taking to fight antisemitism and keep the campus safe,” an NYU spokesperson <a href="https://nypost.com/2023/11/14/metro/nyu-sued-by-jewish-students-over-antisemitism-on-campus/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">told</a> the New York Post. “Antisemitism violates our rules; we take the issues of antisemitism and any other forms of hate extremely seriously, and we are committed to safeguarding our community and providing an environment in which all students can live and learn in peace.”
The lawsuit cites several alleged anti-Semitic incidents involving the plaintiffs.
On October 17, faculty and student members of campus pro-Palestinian groups allegedly burned an Israeli flag, screamed epithets, and made &#8220;slit-your-throat&#8221; gestures toward Jewish students. Ingber and Maslavi said they were attending a silent vigil supporting Israel when they witnessed that incident.
Tawil said he was harassed on the street after the vigil, and when he appealed to NYU for help a campus safety official allegedly told him they had already increased security after a surge in anti-Asian violence in 2021.
The lawsuit demands NYU fire any employees and suspend or expel any students who have engaged in anti-Semitic abuse. The suit is also demanding the school pay compensatory and punitive damages.
Anti-Semitism was also already a &#8220;growing institutional problem&#8221; at NYU even before Hamas attacked Israel last month, the suit claims.
“NYU’s deliberate indifference toward the plight of its Jewish students under siege by egregious antisemitism has been outrageous,” Marc Kasowitz, a lawyer for one of the plaintiffs <a href="https://nypost.com/2023/11/14/metro/nyu-sued-by-jewish-students-over-antisemitism-on-campus/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a> in a statement.
“We are asking the Court to compel NYU to comply with the Civil Rights Act, its own purported policies, and elementary human decency, which to date the University has failed and refused to do on its own,” Kasowitz said.

In a viral video, a Columbia University professor blasted university presidents, including his own, for their cowardice in not making Jewish students feel safe on their campuses.
“Please take out your phones because I want this message to get to every parent who sent their kids to Columbia University and trusted their kids and their children’s safety with us,” Professor Shai Davidai of the Columbia Business School told the assembled students. “I want this message to get to parent in America who sends their kids to NYU, to Harvard, to Stanford, to Berkeley. And I want you to know one thing – we cannot protect your child.”
“I am Israeli, but before all of that, I am a dad,” he continued. “I have two beautiful children and I’m talking to you; I speaking to you as a dad and I want you to know, we cannot protect your children from pro-terrorist student organizations because the president of Columbia University will not speak out against pro-terror student organizations. Because the president of Harvard University, because the president of Stanford, because the president of Berkeley – they will not speak out against pro-terror student organizations.”
He spoke of his 7-year-old son and 2-year-old daughter, pointing out that the terrorist group Hamas views them as “legitimate targets of resistance.” “That is what they are selling: you are allowed to murder and kidnap my 2-year-old daughter in the name of ‘resistance.’ And none of the presidents of universities all around the country are willing to take a stand. This is what cowards do and I’ll name it now: President Minouche Shafik of Columbia University, you are a coward,” he charged.
He warned parents of every religious affiliation: “I’m telling every parent in the United States, it does not matter if you’re Jewish or Christian or Muslim or Hindu or Buddhist or an atheist… rape is never ok. Not as an act of resistance, not as an act of revenge. Rape is never ok. And if my amazing 2-year-old daughter were now 18 years old, I would never, never send her to Columbia. … because I know that she will not be protected here.”
“We would never allow, never allow the KKK to march at our campus,” he declared. “We would never allow an ISIS demonstration on our campus. Can you imagine in the city which had to endure 9/11, the worst attack on American soil, can you imagine that here we have pro-terror student organizations?”

“So what I want you to do now is I want you to go on social media,” he instructed the students. “I want you to put this video online. ‘Cowards’: Columbia U Prof Goes Viral Blasting Colleges’ Silence On ‘Pro-Terror Student Organizations’

Public school parents in the Big Apple could pay $360 for a five-month “antiracism” workshop hosted by New York University, but only if they were white. 
NYU hosted six, two-hour workshops from February through June and barred minorities from attending in what legal experts called a brazen violation of civil rights, the Washington Free Beacon <a href="https://freebeacon.com/campus/woke-or-kkk-nyu-hosts-whites-only-antiracism-workshop-for-public-school-parents/">reported</a>. 
&#8220;It’s quintessentially illegal,&#8221; said Ilya Shapiro, the director of constitutional studies at the Manhattan Institute, according to the Free Beacon. &#8220;This episode illustrates the horseshoe theory whereby left- and right-wing radicals end up agreeing on race-based societal balkanization. It’s like that social media meme: ‘woke or KKK?’&#8221;
The workshop series, called “From Integration To Anti-Racist (FIAR),” was “designed specifically for white public school parents in New York City committed to becoming anti-racist,” according to a <a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20230306012042/https://steinhardt.nyu.edu/events/integration-anti-racist-fiar-workshop-series">page</a> on the university’s website that has since been removed. The workshop organizers also handed out a <a href="https://static1.squarespace.com/static/581e9e06ff7c509a5ca2fe32/t/5986432386e6c09a29eedc62/1501971235500/01+AWARE-LA+Why+a+White+Space.pdf">three-page flier</a> on why they thought it was appropriate to segregate whites from minorities for the “antiracist” sessions. 
“It’s helpful to have a space where other white people engaged in this process can support and challenge us, without having to always subject people of color to further undue trauma or pain as we stumble and make mistakes,” the flier states.
“A white space serves as a resource to people of color who want to work with white people but don’t want to have to spend all their energy dealing with the racism of white people,” the explainer adds.
Samantha Harris, an attorney who focuses on campus speech and civil rights issues, was shocked that the workshop’s organizers failed to see the irony of the so-called “antiracist” seminar.
&#8220;They are literally running a ‘whites only’ program in the interest of so-called social justice,&#8221; Harris told the Free Beacon. &#8220;I find it inconceivable that the people putting these programs together don’t see the irony.&#8221;

Some participants were thankful that minorities were barred from attending, fearing that they would cause them “harm” by confessing their internalized racism. 
&#8220;I was so grateful that there weren’t, you know, people of color in this space to hear me say [that] my first experience learning about what my race was was a black boy with a knife. That can be harming,&#8221; one parent said. 
As parents came in for their first session, they were greeted by Woody Guthrie’s &#8220;<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dWUa7aAIfLE">All You Fascists Bound to Lose</a>,&#8221; which was performed by the &#8220;Resistance Revival Chorus,&#8221; a group “of more than 60 womxn and non-binary singers.” During one session, a parent questioned if it was “a little counterintuitive” to hold a workshop on “antiracism” while excluding minorities, but Barbara Gross, one of the workshop’s organizers, said it was for the good of minorities that the seminar was for white people only. 
&#8220;People of color are dealing with racism all the time,&#8221; Gross said. &#8220;Like every minute of every day. It’s a harm on top of a harm for them to hear our racist thoughts.&#8221;
NYU told the Free Beacon that it would be “reviewing these matters to determine whether they conform to our standards.”

Oberlin College, Barnard College, American University, New York University, and the University of Maine — these are just some of the <a href="https://nypost.com/2023/01/23/spoiled-children-of-privilege-trying-to-burn-atlanta-down/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">alma maters</a> of the surprisingly privileged rioters recently <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/alleged-far-left-rioters-attack-police-smash-office-buildings-in-atlanta" target="_blank" rel="noopener">arrested in Atlanta</a>. They’ve been charged with domestic terrorism, criminal trespass, aggravated assault, and other crimes under Georgia law.
The rioters — driven to defend a forest and prevent a police training center from opening — had allegedly been attacking police officers and EMTs, vandalizing public and private property, and preventing access to private land. During the arrests, law enforcement uncovered explosive devices, gasoline, road flares, mortar-style fireworks, edged weapons, pellet rifles, gas masks, and a blow torch.
This would be upsetting, but perhaps unsurprising, if these crimes were committed by affected locals — a displaced homeowner, an angry taxpayer, or families affected by police violence. But these young individuals are a traveling crew of suspected criminals from states like Maine, Michigan, Minnesota, Nevada, New York, Oregon, Tennessee, and Washington. They riot under the name Defend the Atlanta Forest today, but tomorrow it might be any one of the almost <a href="https://defendtheatlantaforest.org/solidarity/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">600</a> groups that endorse Defend the Atlanta Forest’s cause.
If these rioters terrorized communities under an ISIS or Hamas banner, we would ask how well-off adherents in their 20s and 30s became so radicalized. These young adults have not suffered any oppression by the Atlanta loggers or ultra-trained police officers. And yet something has motivated them to travel thousands of miles (explosives in tow) to squat in a forest and &#8220;defend&#8221; half a mile of property they have never seen and oppose the training of police officers they will never encounter.
They are driven by the <a href="https://defendtheatlantaforest.org/faq/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">belief</a> that “police disproportionately harm and imprison black people and people of color” and that the training center will “escalate this structural commitment to racist harm.” And they believe that “ecological destruction constitutes a grave threat to life on Earth,” particularly “Atlanta’s black communities,” and without these trees, Atlanta will face flooding and lose a breeding ground for “many amphibians.”
If this training center were actually going to lead to rampant racism against black people, cause Atlanta to flood, or “life on Earth” to deteriorate, maybe I would be forest squatting too.
But the evidence shows us that criminal behavior, not skin color, drives most police action. And despite our fixation on catastrophic weather events, the data shows that people are today much <a href="https://nypost.com/2022/09/06/theres-plenty-of-good-news-about-the-environment/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">safer</a> from weather — thanks to wealth, driven by energy and innovation. And we’ve got thousands more <a href="https://twitter.com/BjornLomborg/status/1596907524577320960" target="_blank" rel="noopener">polar bears</a> and humpback whales than we used to (at least until <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/wind-farm-blamed-for-surge-in-dead-whales-on-u-s-atlantic-coast" target="_blank" rel="noopener">the windmills</a> do their damage).
It’s not all positive, but the truth is complicated. Radicals don’t care about the truth; they care about a dogma. And, sadly, dogmas are perpetuated at American universities.
Let’s take a look at some of the course offerings at Oberlin College, an easy target. &#8220;Critical Race Theory in Education&#8220; <a href="https://catalog.oberlin.edu/preview_course_nopop.php?catoid=46&amp;coid=174780" target="_blank" rel="noopener">teaches</a> students about “manifestations of racism in the American school system.” &#8220;History of Race in American Cities and Suburbs&#8220; <a href="https://catalog.oberlin.edu/preview_course_nopop.php?catoid=46&amp;coid=173247" target="_blank" rel="noopener">explores</a> “interracial and interethnic contestation/struggle.” &#8220;Climate Change&#8220; <a href="https://catalog.oberlin.edu/preview_entity.php?catoid=46&amp;ent_oid=4398#" target="_blank" rel="noopener">asks</a> students to consider climate change through the lens of “apocalypse” and “dystopia.”
It’s a surprise more Oberlin graduates don’t find themselves arrested in Atlanta. The common theme seems to be that American civilization — schools, cities, productivity — is the enemy.
If institutions in Syria or Afghanistan existed to promote an anti-American narrative meandering toward violence, we’d certainly be watching. We would not reward these institutions with hoards of federal dollars, at the very least.
So too here. If Oberlin College wants to teach &#8220;<a href="https://catalog.oberlin.edu/preview_course_nopop.php?catoid=46&amp;coid=173239" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Queer Trauma Narratives</a>,&#8221; so be it. It’s a free country. But federal money should only be spent in the public interest. It’s past time we question whether our universities promote it.

<a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/generation-z" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Generation Z</a> is putting America&#8217;s future in peril thanks to their physical and mental fragility, a renowned professor is warning.
The uselessness of today&#8217;s teens and young adults is nothing short of a &#8220;national crisis,&#8221; says Jonathan Haidt, a social psychologist at New York University’s Stern School of Business. Haidt is the author of several books, including &#8220;The Coddling of the American Mind: How Good Intentions and Bad Ideas Are Setting Up a Generation for Failure.&#8221;
“We have a whole generation that’s doing terribly,” Haidt <a href="https://www.wsj.com/articles/the-national-crisis-of-generation-z-jonathan-haidt-social-media-performance-anxiety-fragility-gap-childhood-11672401345" target="_blank" rel="noopener">told</a> The Wall Street Journal in a recent interview.
Gen Z is usually defined as Americans born between 1997 and 2012 who are now in their teens or early 20s. They are the first generation to fully grow up in the age of the internet and social media. According to some surveys, they <a href="https://www.mckinsey.com/industries/healthcare-systems-and-services/our-insights/addressing-the-unprecedented-behavioral-health-challenges-facing-generation-z" target="_blank" rel="noopener">report</a> struggling with mental health more than any generation before them, even the <a href="https://www.vogue.com.au/beauty/wellbeing/why-millennials-are-the-most-anxious-generation-in-history/news-story/755e7b197bdb20c42b1c11d7f48525cd" target="_blank" rel="noopener">notoriously anxious</a> millennials, some of whom are now in their 40s.
There has “never been a generation this depressed, anxious and fragile,” Haidt remarked. &#8220;When you look at Americans born after 1995, what you find is that they have extraordinarily high rates of anxiety, depression, self-harm, suicide and fragility.&#8221;
Because today&#8217;s youth spend so much time online, they have been deprived of practicing the “skills of adulthood in a low-stakes environment” with other children, according to Haidt. They hang out with each other less and even <a href="https://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/nascar/2021/08/04/kids-and-cars-todays-teens-in-no-rush-to-start-driving/48148523/">drive cars</a> less frequently.
Girls are especially vulnerable since they are often drawn to more isolating activities like posting and scrolling on Instagram, which Haidt calls “compare and despair,” while boys often participate in group activities like playing video games with each other, according to Haidt.
Indeed, in 2012, around the time Instagram exploded among younger users, depression rates spiked for Gen Z teen girls, Haidt&#8217;s research shows. A separate <a href="https://studyfinds.org/gen-z-mental-health-condition/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">survey</a> showed that as much as 42% of Gen Z has been diagnosed with a mental health condition.
Their mental fragility has left much of Gen Z in &#8220;defend mode&#8221; rather than &#8220;discover mode,&#8221; according to Haidt, and that carries over onto college campuses.
“Here they are in the safest, most welcoming, most inclusive, most antiracist places on the planet, but many of them were acting like they were entering some sort of dystopian, threatening, immoral world,” he said.
As young professionals, the oldest members of Gen Z so far take fewer risks and innovate less, a trend that could “undermine American capitalism,” Haidt warns.
Gen Z youngsters may even be physically weaker than their elders, at least according to the Pentagon.
&#8220;The &#8216;Nintendo Generation&#8217; soldier skeleton is not toughened by activity prior to arrival, so some of them break more easily,&#8221; said Pentagon and Army Major Jon-Marc Thibodeau, who is chief of the medical readiness service line at Fort Leonard Wood in Missouri.
“We see injuries ranging from acute fractures and falls, to tears in the ACL, to muscle strains and stress fractures, with the overwhelming majority of injuries related to overuse,” said Captain Lydia Blondin, the assistant chief of physical therapy at Leonard Wood Army Community Hospital.
Much of the damage to Gen Z comes from social media, according to Haidt. In fact, he says, damage “so vastly exceeds the damage from Covid that we’re going to have to act.”

At the highest levels of education, we are allowing our children to exalt victimhood and denigrate excellence. The price will be more than lax standards and subpar achievement. It will result in a generation incapable of confronting the difficulties — and glories — of life itself.
One of the most under-rated films of the past two decades is a movie called <a href="https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0384680/">The Weatherman</a>, starring Nicholas Cage and Michael Caine. There is <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RfbxD1M5YI4">an extraordinary scene</a> in which Michael Caine’s character attempts to impart some paternal advice to his son, an existentially bewildered weatherman struggling to achieve anything of real substance in his middle-aged, fledgling life.
He asks his son, “Do you know that the harder thing to do and the right thing to do are usually the same thing?”
This week, the New York Times <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2022/10/03/us/nyu-organic-chemistry-petition.html">featured a story</a> about a much-celebrated Princeton and New York University chemistry professor named Maitland Jones Jr., who was suddenly dismissed from his adjunct position at New York University. Eighty two of three hundred fifty students signed a petition against him, claiming his chemistry course was unnecessarily rigorous and was becoming an unfair hurdle in their quest to win acceptance to medical school someday.
The article inadvertently stumbled on the truth when it observed, “In short, this one unhappy chemistry class could be a case study of the pressures on higher education as it tries to handle its Gen Z student body.”
The problem of how “to handle” Gen Z students is actually rather simple: students, even at elite universities, have the misbegotten notion that rigor is wrong, that sacrifice is a form of stealth oppression, and that any inequality of outcome is proof of a malevolent and systematic cabal foisted upon ambitious students who have an absolute right to achieve their dreams.
Consider some of the quotes from Professor Jones:
<blockquote>&#8220;Students were misreading exam questions at an astonishing rate . . .&#8221;
&#8220;In the last two years, they fell off a cliff . . .&#8221;
&#8220;We now see single digit scores and even zeros . . .&#8221;
&#8220;They weren’t coming to class, that’s for sure, because I can count the house . . .&#8221;
&#8220;They weren’t watching the videos, and they weren’t able to answer the questions . . .&#8221;</blockquote>
A colleague of Dr. Jones made a comment that every high school and college teacher in America can relate to, “I think this petition was written more out of unhappiness with exam scores than an actual feeling of being treated unfairly. I have noticed that many of the students who consistently complained about the class did not use the resources we afforded to them.”
Almost a decade ago, legendary researcher Jean Twenge noticed that modern students craved wealth and success but didn’t particularly seem interested in putting in the time and effort commensurate with such success. In the past decade, the amount of time students spend studying, reading, or doing school work, in general, has absolutely plummeted. I have been guilty of catering to this cult of ease in my own teaching career—the <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TbJvSo5EoJ8">most popular YouTube video</a> I ever taped for my AP classes, by far, was titled, “Pass AP Government exam w/ 75 MINUTE REVIEW!!!!” 
My colleagues and I have noticed that if we tape any review video over five minutes long, the students simply will not watch it. The notion they should spend time outside of class studying for a test is anathema to modern sensibilities, even for the most gifted students.
And yet, this attitude is more than simple sloth or empty entitlement. It is an ethic which does not comprehend, or even recognize, that sacrifice rocks the cradle of genuine achievement, that time, talent, and an endless zeal for a particular ambition can still come up short of the ultimate goal for most people, most of the time. 
But what is most worrisome transcends classrooms and boardrooms and reveals a more poignant ailment of the American soul: if young Americans think organic chemistry is hard, imagine what it is like to kick drug addiction or raise a special needs child or endure the hardship of chemotherapy or confront the infidelity of a spouse or the betrayal of a close friend. Life is not a festival of therapeutic accommodation and the world is not a global Make a Wish Foundation.
In a League of Their Own, Tom Hank’s character, Jimmy Dugan, <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zyiQl2mDHsE">attempts to explain</a> what makes baseball so special: “It’s supposed to be hard. If it wasn’t hard everyone would do it. The hard is what makes it great.” It is fascinating and worthy of further exploration that most young Americans aren’t exposed to movies with dialogue like this or characters of Dugan’s ilk.
For some reason, in the realm of sports, Americans are fully accepting of exceptionally high standards. We revel in stories of Michael Jordon’s superhuman competitiveness, we are inspired that Kobe Bryant would take up to <a href="https://www.popworkouts.com/kobe-bryant-workout-routine/">1,000 practice shots a day</a>, or that Andre Agassi would spend his Christmas vacations <a href="https://www.menshealth.com/fitness/a19544091/build-endurance/">running up hills outside Las Vegas</a>, sometimes until he vomited. If a football coach responded to poor effort and a lackadaisical ethic from his players by raising his voice and hitting a chalk board he would probably be celebrated for his devotion to excellence.
If a math teacher (or organic chemistry professor) does it, he gets petitioned and loses his job.
Don’t tell me there isn’t something wrong here. A word that has vanished from modern parlance but was one of the most cherished virtues of antiquity is “fortitude.” Fortitude is strength, it’s resilience, it’s a dozen different tributaries of grit. And it is a virtue because it is wholly necessary for a successful and flourishing existence. 
We do our children no favors by empowering them to denigrate excellence and exalt victimhood. And yet that is exactly what we are doing in our schools and in our universities.

<a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/new-york-university" target="_blank" rel="noopener">New York University</a> organic chemistry professor Maitland Jones was fired after students petitioned the <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/colleges" target="_blank" rel="noopener">school</a> with claims that his class was too difficult.
According to a <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2022/10/03/us/nyu-organic-chemistry-petition.html">report</a> from The New York Times, Jones — who taught at Princeton University for decades and wrote a bestselling textbook on his subject — maintained a rigorous course that his students, many of whom are pursuing medical careers, considered a weed-out class. After 82 of his 350 pupils signed a petition against him earlier this spring, university deans canceled his teaching contract, which he had previously renewed on a yearly basis.
Marc Walters, who directs New York University’s undergraduate chemistry department, explained in an email to Jones that the school would let students retroactively withdraw from his class as a “gentle but firm hand to the students and those who pay the tuition bills” — an apparent reference to parents.
New York University, where annual tuition is nearly $60,000, places highly on <a href="https://www.usnews.com/best-colleges/nyu-2785">national rankings</a> of American undergraduate programs. Alongside <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/5-signs-the-quality-of-a-college-degree-isnt-what-it-used-to-be">other elite schools</a>, New York University implemented <a href="https://meet.nyu.edu/uncategorized/test-optional-at-nyu-what-it-is-and-isnt/">test optional</a> admissions in response to COVID and government lockdowns — a policy under which applicants are not required to submit scores for standardized tests such as the SAT and ACT.
Jones first noticed a decline in students’ focus roughly one decade ago, although student performance has since worsened. “In the last two years, they fell off a cliff,” he wrote in a letter to the university contesting his termination. “We now see single digit scores and even zeros.”
The 84-year-old professor paid more than $5,000 out of his own pocket to produce 52 organic chemistry lectures intended to help students succeed despite the school’s closure in the spring of 2020. Nevertheless, students failed to take advantage of the extra assistance and appeared in class at lower rates once the university returned to conventional instruction.
“They weren’t coming to class, that’s for sure, because I can count the house,” Jones said in an interview with The New York Times. “They weren’t watching the videos, and they weren’t able to answer the questions.”
Kent Kirshenbaum, a fellow chemistry professor, told the outlet that he discovered cheating during online tests and responded by decreasing students’ grades. He explained that the students protested because “they were not given grades that would allow them to get into medical school.”
The petition against Jones complained of his “condescending and demanding” tone, as well as his decision to conceal course averages and neglect to offer extra credit. “We urge you to realize that a class with such a high percentage of withdrawals and low grades has failed to make students’ learning and well-being a priority and reflects poorly on the chemistry department as well as the institution as a whole,” the document contended.
The controversy over Jones’ termination emerged weeks after President Joe Biden <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/breaking-biden-announces-details-of-student-loan-cancellation-plan">unveiled a plan</a> to eliminate $10,000 in student loans per borrower earning under $125,000, as well as $20,000 per borrower who paid for college using Pell Grants.
According to economists at the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School, the policy may encourage <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/breaking-biden-announces-details-of-student-loan-cancellation-plan">higher levels of college attendance</a> as potential borrowers consider the possibility of future bailouts. “If student loan debt forgiveness is ongoing, students might eventually reorganize their financing toward additional borrowing,” analysts explained.

A growing number of major universities across the U.S. have added a COVID-19 booster shot requirement for attendance during the spring 2022 semester.
Two new schools added to the list rank among the Big Ten, and both are in Michigan, a state facing <a href="https://www.bridgemi.com/michigan-health-watch/coronavirus-tracker-what-michigan-needs-know-now" target="_blank" rel="noopener">surging</a> coronavirus cases in recent weeks.
The University of Michigan announced a new booster shot requirement on December 17 for all students, faculty, and staff members.
&#8220;The University of Michigan is requiring all students, faculty and staff on all three U-M campuses to get a COVID-19 booster shot as one of several enhanced mitigation measures to help reduce the spread of COVID-19 during the winter 2022 academic term,&#8221; the university said in a <a href="https://record.umich.edu/articles/u-m-to-require-covid-19-booster-updates-winter-term-plans/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">letter</a> last week.
&#8220;The deadline for the Ann Arbor campus to receive the booster shot is Feb. 4 or as soon as they are eligible thereafter, based on their individual vaccination schedule,&#8221; the letter added.
Michigan State University has also announced COVID-19 booster shot requirements.
&#8220;All members of our campus community who were fully vaccinated either with a two-dose regimen more than six months ago or a one-dose regimen more than two months ago are now eligible for a booster and should immediately receive one,&#8221; Michigan State University President Samuel Stanley <a href="https://president.msu.edu/communications/messages-statements/2021_community_letters/2021-12-17-covid-boosters-required.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">wrote</a>.

New York University (NYU) also added a booster shot requirement with a January 18, 2022 deadline, according to a recent <a href="https://www.nyu.edu/life/safety-health-wellness/coronavirus-information/safety-and-health/covid-19-vaccine.html?utm_source=newsletter&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_campaign=newsletter_axiosam&amp;stream=top" target="_blank" rel="noopener">update</a>.
<blockquote>NYU requires all students, faculty, employees, and campus visitors to be vaccinated against COVID-19 and upload proof of vaccination as a condition of having access to NYU buildings—both in New York City and at the majority of our Study Away sites in the US and abroad—for the 2021-22 academic year.

An NYU professor of business <a href="http://ace.mu.nu/#387590">surmises</a> that because of the effects of the coronavirus, anywhere from one-quarter to almost one-half of universities in the nation may go out of business in the next five to ten years. NYU professor Scott Galloway also admitted that foreign students paying full tuition are the “cash cow” for universities and  “might decide not to show up.” He commented, &#8220;What department stores were to retail, tier-two higher tuition universities are about to become to education and that is they are soon going to become the walking dead.”
Speaking with Hari Sreenivasanon on PBS&#8217; “Amanpour and Co.,” Galloway spoke of the impact of the coronavirus on colleges and universities, forcing them to hold their classes over the internet, and how that may catalyze flight from the universities and the universities&#8217;  subsequent downfall. Galloway stated, “Students I think across America along with their families listening in on these Zoom classes are all beginning to wonder what kind of value, or lack thereof, they’re getting for their tuition dollars … There’s generally a recognition or disappointment across America, and I would argue that it’s not that they’re disappointed in the Zoom classes, it’s more the recognition that Zoom has uncovered how disappointing college education is. I think there’s a lot of households saying, &#8216;This is what we’re paying for?&#8217;”
Sreenivasan asked, “What happens when some of these students decide, ‘You know what? This doesn’t really make sense for me to pay this much; I think I’m going to drop out?’ And let’s say they decrease revenues, or they’re decreasing revenues from the dorm fees they’re not getting or the sports teams that might not be having nice lucrative contracts?”
Galloway replied, “Yeah, or going further than that, one of the secrets of higher education is our cash cow is foreign students, and you can see that maybe foreign students decide, because they pay full tuition, they might decide not to show up … It’s a nuanced argument: the elite, truly high-end universities are gonna be fine; the head of Harvard admissions has stated publicly that he could double the size of his freshman class and not sacrifice any quality. So it’s a great time to be on the waiting list of a top-tier university ‘cause you’re probably gonna get a call.&#8221;
Speaking of the fact that many students might take a “gap year,” Galloway posited, “There’s gonna be a waterfall; there’s gonna be demand destruction because more people are gonna take gap years, and you’re gonna see increased pressure to lower costs. So just as equity analysts are looking at which companies have cash on balance to survive this shock, you’re gonna see an incredible destruction among companies that have the following factors: a tier-two brand; expensive tuition, and low endowments. There are 4,500 universities in the U.S., you could see a thousand to two thousand go out of business in the next five to ten years. What department stores were to retail, tier-two higher tuition universities are about to become to education and that is they are soon going to become the walking dead.”

Almost Half Of Universities May Be Gone In 5 To 10 Years, Professor Admits

A New York University dean’s attempts to connect with students through dance, her preferred art medium, fell flat when a video she sent of herself dancing to students who demanded a tuition refund appeared tone deaf.
As CNN <a href="https://www.cnn.com/2020/03/28/us/nyu-tisch-school-of-arts-tuition-reimbursement-trnd/index.html">reported</a>, NYU transferred to remote teaching during the coronavirus pandemic, but students at NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts are finding remote classrooms to be difficult, since they don’t have access to the rehearsal spaces or other features of art school. The outlet spoke to senior drama student Emma Hoersdig, who said performing scenes over Zoom creates “disconnect” and “isn’t the education we paid for.” Hoersdig started a Facebook group asking for tuition reimbursement – a group that now has more than 800 members, according to CNN. Nearly 4,000 people have signed <a href="https://www.change.org/p/nyu-tisch-partial-tuition-refund-effort">a petition</a> on Change.org demanding their tuition back.
The petition was started by Jack Ford and Noah Ozuna, who wrote:

By placing profits above the concerns, needs, and quality of education being received by students, NYU ignores the fact that us art students will be paying full price for an education that lacks the facilities, equipment, technology, services, and hands-on experience we are explicitly paying for. While we appreciate the concerted efforts of our professors to salvage what’s left of our education, we reject the assumption that an online Zoom education is equitable in content and value. We hope the Dean, along with Tisch Department chairs, will use their positions to speak on our behalf to the NYU Board of Trustees, and we expect the decency of being part of the conversation moving forward as we work toward appropriate reimbursement of tuition for the Spring 2020 semester.</blockquote>
In the email where she denied tuition reimbursement, dean Green also included a video of her dancing, which appeared to be a flippant response to denying students their tuition. A person who posted the video online called it “embarrassing.” Hoersdig told CNN the video felt “a little condescending to boil our problems down to, &#8216;Yeah, we&#8217;re not going to give you your money back, and that&#8217;s OK, and here&#8217;s a video of me dancing.&#8221;
Green told the outlet that her inclusion of the video was “misunderstood.”
&#8220;What I meant to demonstrate is my certainty that even with the unprecedented hardships of social distancing and remote classes, it is still possible for the Tisch community to make art together, and that all the artists in our school will find ways to remain closely connected even as circumstances challenge us,&#8221; Green said in a statement to CNN. &#8220;I regret it if my email left the reasons for my dancing misunderstood.&#8221;
Green has previously included videos of her dancing to students. She also sent one as part of her response when the Tisch school first announced remote learning due to the coronavirus.
Green also said that reimbursement was not possible because the school must still pay faculty and staff, as well as rent, during the pandemic.
