Longtime NFL reporter Dianna Russini is stepping down from her senior position at The Athletic one week after <a href="https://pagesix.com/2026/04/07/celebrity-news/new-england-patriots-mike-vrabel-and-top-ny-times-nfl-reporter-dianna-russini-hold-hands-and-hug-at-luxury-hotel/">Page Six</a> published bombshell photos of her canoodling with New England Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel.
Russini announced her resignation on Tuesday in a letter posted to <a href="https://x.com/DMRussini/status/2044144603536687279?s=20">X</a>.
&#8220;I have decided to step aside now — before my current contract expires on June 30,&#8221; she wrote. &#8220;I do so not because I accept the narrative that has been constructed around this episode, but because I refuse to lend it further oxygen or to let it define me or my career.&#8221;
The veteran reporter defended her record, citing more than 15 years in sports journalism at NBC, ESPN, and The Athletic.
&#8220;I have built a body of work I am proud of. I have broken stories, earned the trust of sources across the league and been guided by the highest standards of professional conduct. That record speaks for itself,&#8221; she wrote.
Russini said The Athletic, which is owned by The New York Times, initially stood by her account of events that took place in March at a boutique hotel in Sedona, Arizona. However, she said subsequent media coverage fueled speculation she described as &#8220;unmoored from the facts.&#8221;
&#8220;This media frenzy is hurtling forward without regard for the review process The Athletic is trying to complete,&#8221; she added. &#8220;It continues to escalate, fueled by repeated leaks, and I have no interest in submitting to a public inquiry that has already caused far more damage than I am willing to accept.&#8221;
In a memo shared with The Athletic staff, Executive Editor Steven Ginsberg confirmed Russini&#8217;s resignation and said the outlet took the situation seriously from the start.
&#8220;When this situation was brought to our attention last week, there were clear concerns, but we received a detailed explanation and it was our instinct to support and defend a colleague while we continued to review the matter,&#8221; Ginsberg wrote. &#8220;As additional information emerged, new questions were raised that became part of our investigation.&#8221;
Page Six reported that Russini and Vrabel were <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/its-laughable-patriots-coach-mike-vrabel-downplays-poolside-photos-with-married-nfl-reporter">spotted</a> together at the Ambiente hotel on March 28. According to the outlet, they had breakfast, spent time by the pool, side-by-side in a hot tub, and were later photographed on a private rooftop area. The photos showed them holding hands and standing face-to-face, with the outlet also reporting they briefly danced together.
Russini and Vrabel are both married. Russini has been married to Shake Shack executive Kevin Goldschmidt since 2020; the couple shares two sons. Vrabel has been married to his wife, Jen, since 1999, after the two met at Ohio State. They have two sons as well.
In separate statements to Page Six, Russini and Vrabel both downplayed their interactions.
Russini said the photos &#8220;don’t represent the group of six people who were hanging out during the day.&#8221;
Vrabel described the situation as an &#8220;innocent interaction&#8221; and called the images &#8220;laughable.&#8221;
Russini joined The Athletic in 2023 after a successful tenure at ESPN, where she covered the Tennessee Titans during Vrabel&#8217;s tenure as head coach.

Before the Seattle Seahawks and New England Patriots even kick off for Super Bowl LX in San Francisco on Sunday, the game will already be in the record books as the first Super Bowl to feature two teams that missed the playoffs the previous season.
The unusual Super Bowl matchup is a fitting ending to a season that saw the downfall of past seasons&#8217; dominant teams and the rise of new talent. At the beginning of the 2025 season, neither the Seahawks nor the Patriots were expected to compete for a Super Bowl. The Seahawks, coming off a 10-7 record in 2024, were overlooked in a stacked NFC West division this year. The Patriots, meanwhile, were believed to be in the middle of a long rebuild with a young quarterback after finishing with just four wins last season.
But now, both teams have clawed their way to the biggest game in sports.
At first glance, Super Bowl LX seems to lack the intrigue that NFL fans are accustomed to. There&#8217;s no dynasty looking to collect more hardware and there&#8217;s no superstar quarterback who&#8217;s expected to dominate the game. But Super Bowl LX has plenty of storylines to make it a must-watch game.

When Seattle runs out of the tunnel and onto the field at Levi&#8217;s Stadium, it will be led by quarterback Sam Darnold, whose NFL career appeared to be reduced to playing full-time backup just two years ago. Darnold was picked No. 3 overall in the 2018 draft by the New York Jets with the hope that he would become the team&#8217;s franchise quarterback. The hype around Darnold in New York, however, lasted only three seasons as he went just 13-25 with the Jets before he was traded to the Carolina Panthers ahead of the 2021 season.
In Carolina, Darnold played well in some games, but dealt with injuries and battled to remain a starter before he was let go and signed by the San Francisco 49ers in 2023. In San Francisco, Darnold backed up young QB Brock Purdy and made his first Super Bowl appearance, but he didn&#8217;t contribute much to the Super Bowl run, only appearing in one game all season.
In 2024, Darnold got another chance on a one-year contract with the Minnesota Vikings, where he became the starting quarterback and led the team to a surprising 14-3 record and a playoff appearance. Darnold&#8217;s solid season with the Vikings wasn&#8217;t enough to keep the critics off his back as many analysts and commentators slammed him for choking in big games down the stretch. His impressive record with the Vikings also wasn&#8217;t enough to keep him in Minnesota as the team opted to let Darnold go, and he was quickly signed by the Seahawks.
Many thought of Darnold as a reliable veteran who could lead a team to some wins while it continued to build up the offensive line and receiving core, but despite leading the league in turnovers this season, Darnold did enough to lead the Seahawks to the best record in the NFC and a dominant playoff run.

There&#8217;s a redemption arc on the New England sideline, too, where head coach Mike Vrabel is hoping to win a Super Bowl in his first year with the Patriots after being fired by the Tennessee Titans in 2023. Vrabel, a former Patriots linebacker, is also looking to become the first person in NFL history to win Super Bowls as a player and a coach for the same franchise.
Vrabel&#8217;s journey to the big game was likely not what he envisioned. Just a few years ago, Vrabel appeared destined to be the man to lead the Tennessee Titans into glory. Under Vrabel, the Titans made a remarkable playoff run in 2018, defeating Tom Brady and the defending Super Bowl champion Patriots and then beating the AFC&#8217;s best team, the Baltimore Ravens, to reach their first AFC championship game since 2002. The Titans would eventually lose to Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs, who went on to win Super Bowl LIV.
Vrabel reached the playoffs with the Titans again in 2020 and 2021, attaining the #1 overall seed in the AFC in 2021. The Titans, however, struggled in those playoff appearances, losing in the wild card round to the Baltimore Ravens in 2020 and getting upset by the Cincinnati Bengals in the divisional round in 2021.
In a shocking decision, the Titans fired Vrabel after rough seasons in 2022 and 2023. Vrabel took a break from coaching the following season before he was hired by the Patriots ahead of the 2025 season. In just one season with New England, Vrabel has already proven that he should have never been fired, but a Super Bowl ring would put an exclamation point on his return to the NFL.
&#8220;From Day 1, he set that standard. That culture,&#8221; Patriots linebacker Harold Landry <a href="https://www.nfl.com/news/patriots-players-laud-mike-vrabel-for-setting-standard-for-super-bowl-turnaround">said</a> of Vrabel. &#8220;And he brought in guys to kind of help him with that message. [Vrabel] is just at the forefront of it all. Guys have a lot of respect for him because he&#8217;s been here and done it as a player.&#8221;

The Seahawks and Patriots last met in the Super Bowl on February 1, 2015, in Glendale, Arizona. It&#8217;s a game that won&#8217;t be soon forgotten — no matter how hard Seahawks fans try to erase it from their minds. Simply saying the phrase &#8220;2nd down from the one-yard-line&#8221; or the name &#8220;Marshawn Lynch&#8221; is all that&#8217;s needed to evoke memories of that unforgettable game when Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U7rPIg7ZNQ8">inexplicably decided</a> to throw the ball on a game-deciding play from the one-yard line instead of handing it off to one of the league&#8217;s most dominant running backs, and Patriots cornerback Malcolm Butler jumped the route and intercepted Russell Wilson.
Of course, this year, Carrol is not calling plays on the Seattle sideline, and Wilson and Lynch won&#8217;t be lining up together. New England&#8217;s team is no longer defined by Tom Brady and Bill Belichick&#8217;s dynasty, but the shadow from that 2015 Super Bowl still looms, and if Seattle lines up at the New England one-yard line late in the 4th quarter, there will be no escaping the comparisons to the play call from more than a decade ago.

While Sam Darnold goes for redemption, 23-year-old Patriot Drake Maye is seeking to become the youngest starting quarterback to ever win the Super Bowl. If he hoists the Lombardi trophy on Sunday night, Maye — who is 23 years and 162 days old — would surpass Steelers great Ben Roethlisberger, who won his first Super Bowl at 23 years and 340 days old.
Maye, who was taken by the Patriots as the third overall draft pick in 2024, became one of the NFL&#8217;s most consistent quarterbacks in his second season. Maye ranked fourth this season in total passing yards at 4,394, which was just ahead of Darnold&#8217;s 4,048 yards. Maye was also third in the NFL in total touchdown passes with 31.
The New England quarterback has a lot to live up to after Brady&#8217;s two decades of MVPs and Super Bowl championships for the Patriots. But the young gunslinger Maye is off to an impressive start, and if he gets his Super Bowl ring on Sunday alongside his new head coach, things in New England will look eerily similar to 2002 — only Maye would be one year younger than Brady was when the all-time great won his first Super Bowl.

It&#8217;s not too often you have President Donald Trump and LeBron James agreeing, but when it comes to Bill Belichick getting left out of the Pro Football Hall of Fame, the two are very much on the same page.
Belichick, the six-time Super Bowl Championship head coach of the New England Patriots, is not a First-Ballot Hall-of-Famer, meaning the storied NFL coach didn&#8217;t get into the elite club the first year he was eligible.
&#8220;It is the same mindset that gave pro football the new and unwatchable &#8216;Sissy&#8217; Kickoff Rule, that made it possible for Bill Belichick to not be elected into the Pro Football Hall of Fame,&#8221; Trump said in a <a href="https://truthsocial.com/@realDonaldTrump/posts/115972714460477814">post</a> on Truth Social. &#8220;Both are ridiculous and should be overturned!&#8221;
Sharing a similar sentiment, James aired his grievances about the HOF snub on X.
&#8220;Man there&#8217;s no way I read that right! Right? Ain&#8217;t no WAY Bill Belichick ain&#8217;t 1st Ballot HOF!!&#8221; James <a href="https://x.com/KingJames/status/2016301261113655646?s=20">said</a>. &#8220;That&#8217;s IMPOSSIBLE, EGREGIOUS, and quite frankly DISRESPECTFUL!&#8221;
The President and NBA legend were far from outliers on the issue. Belichick&#8217;s exclusion from the Pro Football Hall of Fame this year is puzzling to many. He has a total of eight Super Bowl rings, including the two he won as defensive coordinator under Bill Parcells.
Kansas City Chiefs star quarterback Patrick Mahomes <a href="https://x.com/PatrickMahomes/status/2016285161659175134">called</a> the snub &#8220;insane,&#8221; adding that he could not &#8220;understand how this could be possible.&#8221;
Belichick didn&#8217;t meet the 40-vote threshold needed for induction into the Hall, per <a href="https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/47747076/belichick-not-first-ballot-hall-famer">ESPN</a>. The outlet said Belichick was told directly from the Hall that he didn&#8217;t make it on Friday.
Belichick responded by saying, &#8220;Six Super Bowls isn&#8217;t enough?&#8221; when he heard the news, according to ESPN.
One source told ESPN that &#8220;politics&#8221; were involved in the snub. &#8220;Politics kept him out. He doesn&#8217;t believe this is a reflection on his accomplishments,&#8221; the source told ESPN. Belichick didn&#8217;t respond to the outlet&#8217;s request for comment.
A spokesperson for the Pro Football Hall of Fame did provide ESPN with a comment on Belichick&#8217;s ballot absence.
&#8220;The Pro Football Hall of Fame does not comment on the voting of the Selection Committee and awaits the unveiling of the Class of 2026 at &#8216;NFL Honors&#8217; on Feb. 5 in San Francisco,&#8221; a spokesperson said.
Voters for the Pro Football Hall of Fame are mostly longtime NFL reporters. But other voters include former NFL general manager Bill Polian and legendary head coach Tony Dungy. They are both in the Hall of Fame.
Polian finds himself in the middle of this debacle as ESPN reported the former Colts and Bills GM allegedly told some voters he believed Belichick should &#8220;wait a year&#8221; before being inducted as punishment for Spygate.
Spygate was the 2007 cheating scandal directly tied to Belichick that involved illegally filming opponents&#8217; hand signals during games. The scandal cost the Patriots a first-round draft pick, Belichick was also fined $500,000, and the Patriots organization was also fined $250,000.
Spygate was not the only cheating scandal involving Belichick and the New England Patriots. In 2015, controversy erupted again for Belichick and the Patriots during the Deflategate scandal. The team was implicated for using under-inflated footballs during the AFC Championship game. Patriots quarterback Tom Brady was suspended for 4 games for his involvement, and the organization was fined $1 million.
Regardless of the various scandals, Polian quickly changed his tune on Wednesday after that report circulated, telling ESPN that &#8220;he could not remember with 100% certainty if he voted for Belichick, saying he was 95% sure he voted for the coach.&#8221;
At least 11 voters of the 50 didn&#8217;t give Belichick his flowers this year. The coach will most definitely end up in the Pro Football Hall of Fame, but will now have to wait, at least, another 365 days to get that coveted gold jacket.
Patriots owner Robert Kraft is also up for the Hall of Fame this year. Trump and Kraft have been longtime buddies, with Kraft even donating to Trump&#8217;s first inauguration.
We only know about Belichick&#8217;s ballot situation because of the ESPN story, but if Kraft is also left out of the Hall of Fame this year, Trump will most certainly have something else to say about that as well.

The day after the news broke that Patriots star receiver Stefon Diggs is facing strangulation and assault charges, another Patriots player was found to be facing similar accusations.
According to court documents, Christian Barmore is facing a misdemeanor charge of assault and battery on a household/family member. The charge comes pursuant to an incident on August 8, a report was filed December 16.

According to charging documents obtained by ABC, a woman who was in a relationship with Barmore claims the defensive tackle was angry with her over the temperature in his bedroom. The woman alleged that she and Barmore had also argued over food.
She told police that Barmore grabbed her phone from her hands while she was trying to leave the house. The court documents also state that the woman was trying to open the door and scream for help, but said that &#8220;Christian grabbed her before she could and threw her to the floor.&#8221;
The woman said Barmore grabbed her by the shirt &#8220;in the area of the neck&#8221; while she tried to get up, but then let her go. Allegedly, this all played out in front of their two-year-old child.
WCVB in Boston reports the victim told police she had bruises and that she sent a photo to officers.
In a press conference on Wednesday, Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel <a href="https://x.com/Patriots/status/2006427724802384272?s=20">addressed</a> the allegations against Diggs and Barmore. Vrabel said he hasn&#8217;t heard of anything that would keep Diggs or Barmore from playing in Sunday&#8217;s regular season finale against the Dolphins.

During the press conference, the veteran coach took questions about the serious charges against both Diggs and Barmore. Vrabel said at the time that the situation was &#8220;not disappointing at all&#8221; because, thus far, everything is based solely upon allegations.
&#8220;I don&#8217;t think we have to jump to any sort of conclusions right now,&#8221; Vrabel said.
The Patriots released a statement regarding Barmore&#8217;s charges on Wednesday.
“The New England Patriots are aware of reports regarding a pending February arraignment involving Christian Barmore, which stems from an alleged domestic incident that occurred in August. The Patriots were made aware at the time of the incident and informed the NFL in a timely manner. The matter remains part of an ongoing legal process. We will respect that process, continue to monitor the situation closely, as we have over the past few months, and cooperate fully with the league. We will have no further comment at this time.”
Vrabel added more context to the statement during the presser, saying that it was not a surprise to the organization when the charges against Diggs and Barmore came to light this week.
Vrabel said that he was &#8220;confident that we will focus on the Dolphins and those two individuals will be able to handle the ongoing legal process.&#8221;
Barmore has been with the Patriots since 2021, after getting drafted in the second round out of Alabama. The tackle is set to be arraigned on February 3, five days before the Super Bowl.

Second Patriots Player Charged With Assault, This Time Over A Thermostat

New England Patriots wide receiver Stefon Diggs is facing disturbing allegations stemming from an incident with his private chef earlier this month.
In early December, Diggs allegedly got into an argument with his personal chef via text over an apparent undelivered paycheck. The chef told police that the argument continued in person when Diggs entered her room, hit her in the face, and tried to choke her using his elbow. Diggs&#8217; grip was tight, and when she tried to escape, the wide receiver tightened his hold before throwing her onto the bed, the chef claimed, per TMZ.
According to <a href="https://www.nbcboston.com/news/local/stefon-diggs-criminal-charges-assault-strangulation/3869390/">NBC Boston</a>, Diggs is charged with felony strangulation or suffocation and misdemeanor assault and battery.
This altercation happened in Dedham, Massachusetts, the day after the Patriots beat the Giants on Monday Night Football on December 1. The alleged victim filed the complaint against Diggs on December 16. According to NBC Boston, the chef didn&#8217;t want to press charges at first because of Diggs&#8217; fame and status, but ultimately decided to do so.
The chef told police she has worked for Diggs since July of this year, and was supposed to work for him throughout the 2025 football season. At the time of the incident with Diggs, she claims she hadn&#8217;t received a month&#8217;s pay.

Diggs&#8217; attorney, David Meier, released a statement on Tuesday strongly denying the allegations against the NFL wide receiver.
&#8220;They are unsubstantiated, uncorroborated, and were never investigated &#8212; because they did not occur. The timing and motivation for making the allegations is crystal clear: they are the direct result of an employee-employer financial dispute that was not resolved to the employee&#8217;s satisfaction. Stefon looks forward to establishing the truth in a court of law.&#8221;
The Patriots also released a <a href="https://x.com/RapSheet/status/2006045441360793872?s=20">statement</a>: &#8220;The New England Patriots are aware of the accusations that have been made regarding Stefon Diggs. Stefon has informed the organization that he categorically denies the allegations. We support Stefon. We will continue to gather information and will cooperate fully with the appropriate authorities and the NFL as necessary. Out of respect for all parties involved, and given that this is an ongoing legal matter, we will have no further comment at this time.&#8221;
NBC Boston reports Diggs&#8217; arraignment is scheduled for January 23, which is the Friday before the AFC Championship Game.
The Patriots clinched the AFC East title on Sunday. In that game, Diggs scored a touchdown — his first in nearly two months. The 32-year-old has a team-leading 82 receptions for 970 yards and four touchdowns this season.
The Patriots wrap up the regular season Sunday before their postseason push for a Super Bowl.
In response to The Daily Wire&#8217;s request for comment, Dedham Police Department said: &#8220;We are in receipt of your request for copies of records and information related to this matter. However, we are unable to fulfill this request at this time. A motion to impound records related to this matter is currently pending before the court, and we are awaiting the judge&#8217;s ruling on that motion. Until the court issues a decision, we are not releasing any documents or information.&#8221;

In a distant time not too long ago, the NFL stood proudly as a place to witness exciting touchdowns, roaring stadiums, and halftime entertainment that was more cheer than cringe. But these days, the NFL is a shell of its former self. You’re more likely to see Taylor Swift on the jumbotron, and yes, male cheerleaders prancing around the field.  
The <a href="https://x.com/ThePatriotOasis/status/1955289676404727941">Minnesota Vikings</a> and other NFL <a href="https://sports.yahoo.com/article/12-nfl-teams-adding-male-212045510.html">teams</a> were in the news this week after video clips of their current cheer squad started making the rounds online. The typical bevy of perky, peppy women outfitted in skimpy outfits and effusive smiles included men with wavy hair and sassy moves standing front and center.
Another team that picked at least one male cheerleader for its squad was the <a href="https://x.com/WallStreetMav/status/1956156347193680139">New England Patriots</a>, who play at Gillette Stadium. You know, that stadium that’s sponsored by the razor company that has pushed a <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/eyeroll-now-gillette-razors-are-talking-about-ashe-schow">campaign</a> speaking out against “toxic masculinity” and once ran a <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AR-JkiNQ_Ro">commercial</a> about a dad helping his daughter, who identifies as a boy, shave for the first time. So maybe it’s not surprising that a dude could be prancing around with the female cheerleaders this season at Gillette Stadium. 
It may not be the first year NFL cheer squads added men to their roster. For example, the Carolina Panthers have had an &#8220;<a href="https://www.nfl.com/news/first-openly-transgender-nfl-cheerleader-justine-lindsay-a-face-of-the-possible">openly transgender</a>&#8220; member of their squad since 2022. But now that so many other DEI policies are being abandoned, it does seem like a giant step backwards. 
Over here in normal town, we reserve sideline pom-pom routines for women, not men posing as women or men acting like women. 
According to several fans <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wxztOLNyLfI">threatening</a> to dump the Vikings, their team has crossed a line with this latest choice. Male cheerleaders in the NFL? That’s a brand knowingly alienating its fan base. It proves there’s still a giant disconnect between what the fans want and what they’re getting.
So many men have given up on the NFL long ago when the first echoes of wokeness started echoing through the locker rooms across the nation. But there are still plenty of fans who want to sit down on a Sunday, crack a cold one, and watch the game with their buddies. They want to unite in their love of football – the real kind, the American kind. They want to see some cheerleaders who don’t have 5 o’clock shadows. Is that too much to ask?

In a message posted on Monday on <a href="https://x.com/StandUp2JewHate/status/1782388392438686076" target="_blank" rel="noopener">X</a>, the Patriots owner — who’s the founder of The Foundation to Combat Antisemitism (FCASorg) — wrote that he’s “deeply saddened at the virulent hate that continues to grow on campus&#8221; at his alma mater Columbia University and &#8220;throughout our country&#8221; following the October 7 attack by Hamas on Israel.
“&#8230;The school I love so much — the one that welcomed me and provided me with so much opportunity — is no longer an institution I recognize,” Kraft’s statement read. “I am no longer confident that Columbia can protect its students and staff and I am not comfortable supporting the university until corrective action is taken.”
“It is my hope that Columbia and its leadership will stand up to this hate by ending these protests immediately and will work to earn back the respect and trust of the many of us who have lost faith in the institution,” he added.

“It is my hope that in this difficult time, the Kraft Center at Columbia will serve as a source of security and safety for all Jewish students and faculty on campus who want to gather peacefully to practice their religion, to be together, and to be welcomed,” the NFL team owner’s statement concluded.
On Monday, the New York City university moved to remote learning out of safety concerns stemming from pro-Palestinian protests that have unsettled the Ivy League school’s <a href="https://jewishinsider.com/2024/04/for-the-first-time-people-were-truly-afraid-antisemitism-hits-boiling-point-at-columbia-university/">Jewish population</a> as the Passover holiday is set to begin, as previously <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/columbia-university-moves-to-remote-learning-as-campus-rancor-puts-jewish-students-on-edge">reported</a>.
Minouche Shafik, the president of Columbia University, announced the move in a <a href="https://president.columbia.edu/news/statement-columbia-university-president-minouche-shafik-4-22">statement</a> calling for a “reset” after a rabbi for Columbia and its partner school Barnard College <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/columbia-rabbi-warns-of-extreme-antisemitism-advises-jewish-students-to-return-home-asap">urged</a> Jewish students to go home due to the “extreme antisemitism and anarchy” that the university and New York Police Department could not contain.
“To deescalate the rancor and give us all a chance to consider next steps, I am announcing that all classes will be held virtually on Monday,” Shafik said early Monday morning. “Faculty and staff who can work remotely should do so; essential personnel should report to work according to university policy. Our preference is that students who do not live on campus will not come to campus.”

Belichick leaves the team after a dismal season as New England finished with a 4-13 record. A New England Patriots season ticket holder died Sunday night after he was <a href="https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-12533829/New-England-Patriots-season-ticket-holder-53-beaten-death-Gillette-Stadium-Miami-Dolphins-cops-investigation.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reportedly</a> punched three times by a Miami Dolphins fan at the Patriots-Dolphins game at Gillette Stadium in Foxboro, Massachusetts.
Dale Mooney, 53, of Newmarket, New Hampshire, a married father of two children, had attended the game with three friends; they told Mooney’s wife later that they were taunted in the 300-tier section during the game by other fans, WCVB <a href="https://www.wcvb.com/article/foxborough-massachusetts-new-england-fan-death-patriots-gillette-stadium/45194876" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reported.</a>
Joseph Kilmartin, who witnessed the incident, said of Mooney, “He basically grabbed another fan. They started tussling around for a few minutes. At one point, another Dolphins fan walked over. He punched him three times, and the man just went out. It was pretty hard to watch.”
“It was really one punch that I saw and the victim got punched really hard on the side of the head, and went down. He&#8217;s a bigger guy but he just crumbled,” a witness told <a href="https://www.nbcboston.com/news/local/district-attorney-state-police-investigating-fans-death-at-gillette-stadium-during-sundays-patriots-game/3138822/">NBC Boston</a>. “First responders got there and they instantly start doing compressions, they had to lay him out in the aisle between the seats. They were doing compressions by my estimation for easily 10 minutes. It was pretty heartbreaking and the game was still going on so the general public clearly knew what was going on in our section so the game was going on, people are cheering for the Patriots comeback, and this poor guy has passed away before our eyes. It was pretty brutal to watch.”
Mooney was transported to the Sturdy Memorial Hospital in Attleboro, where he was pronounced dead.
“I just feel numb; I can&#8217;t even believe this is for real,” Mooney’s wife Lisa said. “I don&#8217;t understand why people have to go to that extreme. Why can&#8217;t it just be fun? That&#8217;s all it&#8217;s supposed to be, just a fun family event.&#8221; Mooney said she didn’t know of any medical condition her husband had that would precipitate a blackout, adding that he “has the patience of a saint. &#8230; I don&#8217;t know what happened &#8230; it takes a lot to get him mad.”
 “I would use this terrible situation as a reminder that this is just a game and people are just going to enjoy themselves and cheer on their team but everyone should be able to attend a game and feel safe in their environment,” a fan at the game commented.
The Norfolk County District Attorney’s Office stated that “the matter remains under active investigation.” A spokesman for the state police sad they were investigating “the facts and circumstances of the man&#8217;s death, including the sequence of events prior to the medical incident.”

Patriots Fan Dies After Reportedly Being Punched By Dolphins Fan At Game

<a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/nfl" target="_blank" rel="noopener">New England Patriots</a> defensive back Jack Jones was arrested this week at Boston Logan International Airport for allegedly trying to bring two firearms onto a plane.
TSA agents found the firearms in Jones&#8217; carry-on luggage when he went through airport security on Friday evening in Terminal B.
The 25-year-old was later arrested by Massachusetts State Police and taken to the State Police-Logan Airport Barracks where he posted bail.
NBC Boston <a href="https://www.nbcboston.com/news/sports/patriots-jack-jones-arrested-after-trying-to-bring-2-guns-onto-logan-flight-police-say/3070548/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reported</a> that Jones was charged with possession of a concealed weapon inside a secure area of an airport, possession of ammunition without a firearm ID card, unlawful possession of a firearm, carrying a loaded firearm, and possession of a large-capacity feeding device.
The Patriots said in a statement that they were aware of the incident and that they were reviewing the matter.
&#8220;We have been notified that Jack Jones was arrested at Logan Airport earlier today,&#8221; the statement said. &#8220;We are in the process of gathering more information and will not be commenting further at this time.&#8221;
He will be arraigned in federal court next week.
Social media users pointed out online Friday night that Jones commented last month on Memphis Grizzlies star point guard Ja Morant being suspended by the NBA for 25 games without pay after he was seen waving a gun in a video posted to social media.

New England Patriots Player Arrested For Trying To Take 2 Guns Onto Plane: Report

Former Super Bowl champion Charles Johnson&#8217;s death was ruled a suicide by an apparent drug overdose, according to a report from the North Carolina medical examiner&#8217;s office.
Johnson, a former first-round draft pick who won a Super Bowl with the New England Patriots in 2001, was found dead in a hotel room near his Raleigh home on July 17, 2022.
“The only personal items in the hotel room appeared to be two empty bottles of water, an empty travel (sized) bottle of body lotion, an empty travel container, a pair or sandals and a pair of eyeglasses,” the report from the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Raleigh said, <a href="https://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/2023/01/09/charles-johnson-ex-nfl-player-died-suicide-july-medical-examiner/11020068002/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">according to</a> USA Today.
“A query of the North Carolina Prescription Monitoring Service showed no active prescriptions. An old (2018) short-term hydrocodone prescription was documented,&#8221; it added.
Raleigh police officers found Johnson when the hotel placed a call for a welfare check after he did not check out on July 17. Johnson reserved the room on July 15, returned home, and then came back to the hotel without his wallet, cell phone, or keys. His car was also left at his home.
Johnson, 50, had been reported missing by his wife, Tanisha, one day earlier. The report also noted that in the week prior to his death that he had been &#8220;acting strange&#8221; and had recently purchased a funeral and cremation service.
The former NFL star suffered multiple injuries during his nine years as a player that reportedly left him unable to play football, USA Today <a href="https://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/nfl/2022/09/27/charles-johnson-ex-nfl-brain-health-problems-before-death/10439944002/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reported</a> concerning documents filed as part of a workers compensation case in California. The Steelers disputed his claims but agreed to pay $150,000 in 2013 to settle the case, per the report.
Johnson was drafted by the Pittsburgh Steelers out of Colorado in the first round as the overall number 17 pick in 1994, CBS 17 <a href="https://www.cbs17.com/news/local-news/wake-county-news/super-bowl-winning-receiver-heritage-high-school-assistant-athletic-director-charles-johnson-dies/">noted</a>. The wide receiver also played with the Philadelphia Eagles and the Buffalo Bills.
During his five seasons with the Steelers, Johnson finished 10th in the league in yards per reception (16.8) and led the team in receiving yards (1,008) in his third year. He ranks 16th all-time among Steelers receivers, <a href="https://nypost.com/2023/01/10/ex-nfler-charles-johnsons-death-ruled-suicide/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">according to</a> the New York Post.
The former NFL athlete was serving as a coach at Heritage High School in Wake Forest, North Carolina, at the time of his death.
