Comedian <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/bill-maher-calls-for-media-blackout-on-school-shooters-its-just-going-to-inspire-the-next-one" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Bill Maher</a> confronted well-known astrophysicist <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/neil-degrasse-tyson-tries-to-ruin-top-gun-maverick-nasa-astronaut-spoils-his-fun" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Neil DeGrasse Tyson</a> during a recent episode of his &#8220;Club Random&#8221; podcast, accusing him of &#8220;taking the path of least resistance&#8221; rather than confronting woke insanity when he saw it.
The conversation hinged on free speech on college campuses, and whether or not a comedian could perform anything truly funny without immediately being &#8220;canceled&#8221; by the woke mob — a question that Maher answered with a resounding &#8220;no.&#8221;
Tyson complained that Maher was effectively dismissing &#8220;an entire generation&#8221; out of hand, and argued that perhaps he should adjust his material and joke about topics that students found acceptable.
&#8220;So why is it their fault and not your fault?&#8221; he asked.

Tyson pushed back, saying that his goal was to keep his audience so that he could continue to influence the younger generation on topics that were truly important — which was why he said that he tried to avoid the cultural &#8220;land mines&#8221; that could make that impossible.
&#8220;It&#8217;s not good enough to be right, you also have to be effective,&#8221; he said.

Tyson made the remarks during an <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lW2gdRvcSec" target="_blank" rel="noopener">interview</a> with ESPN&#8217;s Stephen A. Smith for his &#8220;K[no]w Mercy&#8221; podcast in May, but a short video clip of their exchange — particularly Tyson&#8217;s take on gender — began circulating on Monday.

Critics quickly began to call Tyson out over his take on the issue, arguing that people cared because it wasn&#8217;t just about muscle shirts and make-up — and suggesting that it was glossed over the reality that children were being subjected to dangerous and irreversible treatments in their attempts to change biological realities.
&#8220;A lot of mornings I don’t put on makeup. I’m still a woman. And a gender dysphoric person’s right to &#8216;pursue happiness&#8217; doesn’t mean they get to demand that the rest of the world play along. I always kind of thought @neiltyson was in the class of educated idiots. Critics were not impressed with Tyson&#8217;s lesson, however. One <a href="https://twitter.com/aginnt/status/1606881806351241217" target="_blank" rel="noopener">announced</a> that it &#8220;wins for the most unfun Christmas tweet of all time.&#8221;

Tyson wasn&#8217;t quite finished, however, and he followed up with one more tweet reminding the people who were offended by the religious undertones of the &#8220;Merry Christmas&#8221; greeting that &#8220;Happy Holidays&#8221; might not be quite as atheist as they thought.

In 2021, his Christmas tweets argued that Santa could not possibly live at the North Pole. &#8220;Since the Northern Arctic is just ocean, Santa’s North Pole workshop has only ever existed on a floating sheet of ice.&#8221;
Tyson also suggested that families should help the rotund Christmas gifter to get his weight under control, calling on them to leave &#8220;carrots, celery, &amp; hot tea for Santa on the table instead of milk &amp; cookies.&#8221;
In 2020, Tyson took issue with <a href="https://dailywire.com/news/neil-degrasse-tyson-santa-doesnt-know-zoology-rudolph-was-misgendered/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Santa again</a> — claiming that the jolly old elf had misgendered his own most famous reindeer. &#8220;Santa doesn’t know Zoology: Both male &amp; female Reindeer grow antlers. So Santa’s reindeer, which all sport antlers, are therefore all female, which means Rudolf has been misgendered.&#8221;

Neil deGrasse Tyson: Santa ‘Doesn’t Know Zoology,’ Rudolph Was ‘Misgendered’

This year has been beyond bizarre. A month into 2020, House Democrats impeached the president. Then, a pandemic arrived and, like a crummy household guest, it never left. Then NBA legend Kobe Bryant died (followed, in a bizarre PR <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fkKEVt3f5Vo">stunt</a>, by Mr. Peanut). Then the U.K. pulled out of the European Union and a prince and his royal wife moved to Hollywood. Then race riots erupted in cities across America after black men died at the hands of white police.
And then, murder hornets arrived — like the virus, from Asia.
That was all by June.
So it makes perfect sense that the day before Election Day, a refrigerator-sized space rock could strike Earth. That&#8217;s what astrophysicist and celebrity scientist Neil deGrasse Tyson says.
Sounds about right for 2020.
The space rock, known only as 2018VP1, is currently racing toward Earth at 25,000 miles per hour and could clip the planet. Still, Tyson was optimistic.
&#8220;It may buzz-cut Earth on Nov. 2, the day before the Presidential Election,&#8221; he wrote on <a href="https://www.instagram.com/p/CGd38Y1gH-U/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link">Instagram</a>. &#8220;But it’s not big enough to cause harm. So if the World ends in 2020, it won’t be the fault of the Universe.&#8221;
The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) offers even better news, putting its chance of  even entering Earth&#8217;s atmosphere at less than half of 1%.
&#8220;Asteroid 2018VP1 is very small, approx. 6.5 feet, and poses no threat to Earth! It currently has a 0.41% chance of entering our planet’s atmosphere, but if it did, it would disintegrate due to its extremely small size,” the space agency <a href="https://twitter.com/AsteroidWatch/status/1297576303206576133" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">wrote</a> on Twitter.

Meanwhile, there&#8217;s an asteroid the size of London&#8217;s famous Big Ben clock tower that will zip past Earth this week.
&#8220;The space rock, known as 2020 TGI, will fly safely past Earth on Thursday, Oct. 22, at 10:49 p.m. EST, according to NASA&#8217;s Center for Near-Earth Object Studies,&#8221; Fox News reported. &#8220;Researchers estimate 2020 TGI is traveling at a speed of roughly 30,700 miles per hour and will fly past the planet at a distance of just over 7 million miles.&#8221;
Scientists estimate 2020 TGI is between 154 and 360 feet wide. And guess when it&#8217;s expected to come back? That&#8217;s right, the next election year, 2024.
But here&#8217;s some worse news: NASA doesn&#8217;t always know what&#8217;s out there. &#8220;In August, an asteroid the size of a pickup-truck flew within 2,000 miles of Earth, the closest ever recorded. It was missed by NASA until after it flew past the planet,&#8221; Fox <a href="https://www.foxnews.com/science/big-ben-sized-asteroid-fly-past-earth-this-week">reported</a>.
And remember the dinosaurs? They were just fine until a massive asteroid hit. But NASA Administrator Jim Bridenstine said in a conference last year that Earth&#8217;s greatest threat is an asteroid strike.
&#8220;We have to make sure that people understand that this is not about Hollywood, it&#8217;s not about movies,&#8221; Bridenstine said, according to <a href="https://www.space.com/asteroid-threat-planetary-defense-nasa-chief.html">Space.com</a>. &#8220;This is about ultimately protecting the only planet we know right now to host life, and that is the planet Earth.&#8221;
&#8220;We know for a fact that the dinosaurs did not have a space program. But we do, and we need to use it,&#8221; he said.

In 2020, Why Not?! Refrigerator-Sized ‘Space Rock’ Could Strike Earth On Day Before Election, Top Astrophysicist Says

On this week’s episode of “The Ben Shapiro Show: Sunday Special,” the Daily Wire editor-in-chief talked to Astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson about his new book, “Letters From An Astrophysicist.” During the interview, they also briefly discussed the problem of transgender athletes participating in sports. Video and partial transcript below: 
SHAPIRO: Moving on from climate change, which is an area &#8212; as I said &#8212; where some people on the Right are not particularly interested, to areas where it seems like the Left is militating against the advent of science. One of those areas, is the area of transgenderism, where the argument &#8212; 

TYSON: Curiously, I have no transgender letters [in my book, &#8220;Letters From An Astrophysicist&#8221;].
SHAPIRO: It’s true, nothing in the book. We’ve strayed now far from the topic of your book. But since I have you here and you’re a science person, I’m going to ask you to science for me a little bit. 
But when it comes to transgenderism, the argument that is typically made by gender theorists is that gender is entirely separate from sex. You&#8217;ve seen the argument made that it makes no difference, on average, if men are stronger than women are &#8212; that if we were to allow transgender women to compete with non-transgender women, then this would somehow not disadvantage biological women. This seems to me absolutely a-scientific, that if we&#8217;re actually gonna have a discussion about gender and sex, that [discussion] should be based in data, which suggests that mammals are in fact binary in terms of their sex, unless you have intersex birth defects typically, or genetic defects. 
TYSON: I&#8217;m happy to opine on this. This only matters because today we segregate nearly all sports by gender. Otherwise, why do we even give a [expletive] what someone identifies with? We live in a free country, and with consenting adults and people&#8217;s free expression of who and what they are &#8212; 

SHAPIRO: Now, on an adult level I agree with you. But I think it does matter what we teach children.

TYSON: That’s what I’m saying. So there&#8217;s the matrix of what you are biologically, how you express yourself, who you choose as a sexual partner. If we actually live in a free country as we tell ourselves, people&#8217;s freedom to behave in any of those ways should not concern you at all. Nor are they requiring that you behave that way. Okay, this is for their own freedoms because we live in a free country.
Now, what is unresolved here is, what do you do with sports? It&#8217;s unresolved, and I&#8217;ve followed that closely, and I don&#8217;t see any, I don&#8217;t see any meaningful solutions to come down off of that. We know that hormones manifest differently in different people, and &#8212; that’s the whole thing with steroids, steroids are hormones &#8212; we rallied against steroids in professional sports because it gives you an undue advantage. So, I try to think of what the future of sports would be in the world of a gender spectrum, and it may be, you don&#8217;t specify whether it&#8217;s a male or female sport. You just take measurements of what your hormonal balances are, and so you compete based on your hormones. It’s a thought I had, I don&#8217;t know where it&#8217;s going to land. 
SHAPIRO: The WNBA won&#8217;t be in business for very long if that&#8217;s the case. 
TYSON: It would just be, you&#8217;d have to find some way to compete people against each other, if you still care that sports is an interesting activity. 
SHAPIRO: I guess the area where it does come up in a non-sports area &#8212; 

TYSON: Yea, tell me, because I don&#8217;t know.
SHAPIRO: So, you talk in your book about the education of children and teaching children about science. Right now, children are being taught about the quote unquote “gender spectrum,” which is not scientifically based. That is a theory-based idea. 
TYSON: No, wait, wait, wait, hold on. People express themselves on a spectrum, so you learn that. 
SHAPIRO: That&#8217;s a social point, not a scientific point. Meaning, we express ourselves based in different languages. Is that something we teach in a science class, or is that something that you teach when you&#8217;re teaching a language?
TYSON: So, whether the fact that people want to express themselves on a spectrum, on a gender spectrum, whether that fact is something you want to put in a sociology class or in a science class, maybe that remains to be determined. But it is a real fact about real society. 
SHAPIRO: Well of course, nobody&#8217;s denying that people [do] identify how they want to identify. So, the question is, What is the relationship of that to biology? The argument is made that trans women are women, for example, and what that seems to mean is that trans women are identical to women. Now, if people want to say trans women are not biological women, obviously that is the case. But people don&#8217;t seem to want to say that, although that is obviously scientifically true. Trans women are not biological women. Biological women are biological women.

Scientist Neil deGrasse Tyson responded on Sunday to the recent tragedies in El Paso and Dayton by stating facts and putting things in perspective. What ensued can only be described as a full meltdown from those on the political Left.
Tyson tweeted: &#8220;In the past 48hrs, the USA horrifically lost 34 people to mass shootings. On average, across any 48hrs, we also lose &#8230; 500 to Medical errors. 300 to the Flu. 250 to Suicide. 200 to Car Accidents. 40 to Homicide via Handgun. Often our emotions respond more to spectacle than to data.&#8221;
The numbers that Tyson tweeted appear accurate, except for the statistic about the number of deaths that occur over a 48-hour period from medical errors. A Johns Hopkins University <a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2018/02/22/medical-errors-third-leading-cause-of-death-in-america.html">study</a> claims that 250,000 people die per year in the U.S. from medical errors, which equates to 684 deaths per day — or 1,300+ deaths over a 48-hour period.

Tyson later cowered to the online mob and apologized for stating facts, writing in a statement:
<blockquote>Yesterday, a Tweet I posted in reaction to the horrific mass shootings in America over the previous 48 hours, killing 34 people, spawned mixed and highly critical responses.
If you missed it, I offered a short list of largely preventable causes of death, along with their average two-day death toll in the United States. They significantly exceeded the death toll from the two days of mass shootings, including the number of people (40) who on average die from handgun homicides every two days.
I then noted that we tend to react emotionally to spectacular incidences of death, with the implication that more common causes of death trigger milder responses within us.
My intent was to offer objectively true information that might help shape conversations and reactions to preventable ways we die. Where I miscalculated was that I genuinely believed the Tweet would be helpful to anyone trying to save lives in America. What I learned from the range of reactions is that for many people, some information –-my Tweet in particular &#8212; can be true but unhelpful, especially at a time when many people are either still in shock, or trying to heal – or both.
So if you are one of those people, I apologize for not knowing in advance what effect my Tweet could have on you. I am therefore thankful for the candor and depth of critical reactions shared in my Twitter feed. As an educator, I personally value knowing with precision and accuracy what reaction anything that I say (or write) will instill in my audience, and I got this one wrong.

Fox television network has pushed back Neil deGrasse Tyson&#8217;s new show, &#8220;Cosmos: Possible Worlds,&#8221; indefinitely while the scientist and sometimes-political commentator is investigated for incidents of sexual harassment and sexual assault.
According to <a href="https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/live-feed/cosmos-bumped-fox-as-neil-degrasse-tyson-investgation-continues-1187193?fbclid=IwAR2YYZkh7XaEXuthZI-m8A_-DqUKOCZii5Vep-Jjp_jQAALI7Je97SR5y9Y">The Hollywood Reporter</a>, both Fox and National Geographic are investigating deGrasse Tyson after learning of several sexual harassment complaints leveled against the astrophysicist in a blockbuster report by cultural site Patheos.
DeGrasse Tyson was scheduled to host &#8220;Cosmos: Possible Worlds&#8221; as a follow up to a similar 2014 special he did for the Fox network called, &#8220;Cosmos: A Spacetime Odyssey&#8221; — a reboot of the classic Carl Sagan-hosted show from the 1980s. Fox and National Geographic both produce and air the deGrasse Tyson version of &#8220;Cosmos.&#8221;
The Hollywood Reporter says Fox will air an episode of &#8220;Family Guy&#8221; in place of &#8220;Cosmos.&#8221;
<a href="https://www.patheos.com/blogs/nosacredcows/2018/11/two-more-women-accuse-neil-degrasse-tyson-of-sexual-misconduct/">Patheos reported</a> the allegations against deGrasse Tyson back in November. According to the extensive report, at least three women claim deGrasse Tyson harassed or assaulted them. Two of those women, Dr. Katelyn Allers and Ashley Watson, accused deGrasse Tyson of making &#8220;inappropriate sexual advances&#8221; toward them in the late 2000s.
Allers says deGrasse Tyson approached her at a conference of the American Astronomical Society in 2009 and leered down her dress, and asked to see a partially obscured tattoo Allers had of the solar system.
“After we had taken [a] picture,&#8221; Allers told Patheos, &#8220;[DeGrasse Tyson] noticed my tattoo and kind of grabbed me to look at it, and was really obsessed about whether I had Pluto on this tattoo or not… and then he looked for Pluto, and followed the tattoo into my dress.”
Allers says she reported the incident to a colleague at the time.
Ashley Watson, a former assistant to DeGrasse Tyson, says she was forced to quit her job several years ago because she felt deGrasse Tyson was making &#8220;inappropriate sexual advances.&#8221;
&#8220;Watson worked directly with Tyson for several months,&#8221; Patheos reported. &#8220;She says that, during that time, he put her in an uncomfortable situation by attempting to persuade her into sex, and demonstrated his &#8216;predatory tendencies.'&#8221;
Watson also says she reported the incident immediately to her human resources department.
A third woman, a former girlfriend of deGrasse Tyson from his college years, accused deGrasse Tyson of &#8220;raping her while they were both graduate students in astronomy at UT Austin,&#8221; <a href="https://blogs.scientificamerican.com/observations/sexual-misconduct-allegations-against-neil-degrasse-tyson-reveal-the-complexity-of-academic-inequality/">according to Scientific American</a>. The woman made her allegations in 2014, but says the incident happened in the early 1980s.
DeGrasse Tyson has lost more than his &#8220;Cosmos&#8221; job while waiting for both Fox and Nat Geo to complete their investigation into his history. &#8220;Nat Geo pulled Tyson&#8217;s science-focused talk show Star Talk,&#8221; the Hollywood Reporter says. &#8220;In early January, the cable network said it was holding new episodes of Star Talk &#8216;until the investigation is complete. We expect that to happen in the next few weeks, at which time we&#8217;ll make a final decision.'&#8221;
Tyson denies the allegations, and says he welcomes the investigation.

BuzzFeed News revealed in a report Wednesday that it has been looking into sexual misconduct allegations against Neil deGrasse Tyson for &#8220;nearly three years.&#8221; After a fourth woman came forward to level allegations against the famed astrophysicist, the outlet has now presented its findings.
&#8220;Over the course of nearly three years, BuzzFeed News has spoken with more than 30 people for this story, including the alleged victims and their families, Cosmos crew members, and graduate students and professors who were at UT Austin 30 years ago. Dozens more from that time did not reply to requests for interviews,&#8221; BuzzFeed&#8217;s <a href="https://www.buzzfeednews.com/article/azeenghorayshi/neil-degrasse-tyson-sexual-allegations-four-women">Azeen</a><a href="https://www.buzzfeednews.com/article/azeenghorayshi/neil-degrasse-tyson-sexual-allegations-four-women"> Ghorayshi</a> reports.
&#8220;Most of the people interviewed lamented the prospect that damaging allegations might take down the world&#8217;s most famous living scientist &#8212; and perhaps the most famous black scientist in history &#8212; beloved for eviscerating so many of the stereotypes of the stuffy, out-of-touch academic,&#8221; she adds. &#8220;But for [accusers Ashley] Watson and [Katelyn] Allers, the tragedy was the loss of a different black scientist: [Tchiya] Amet.&#8221;
The report, titled &#8220;Nobody Believed Neil deGrasse Tyson&#8217;s First Accuser. Now There Are Three More,&#8221; presents a summary of the three new accusations of sexual harassment against Tyson, but focuses primarily on his first accuser, Amet, who first aired her accusations in a <a href="https://tchiya.wordpress.com/2014/10/08/end-the-silence-end-the-violence-chapter-6-austin-texas-1983-1984-the-blue-lotus-speaks/">blog post </a>in October 2014, accusations since published by <a href="https://www.patheos.com/blogs/nosacredcows/2017/10/neil-degrasse-tyson-accused-of-rape/">Patheos</a> over a year ago but that went largely dismissed amid attacks on her credibility.
On Saturday, BuzzFeed spoke with the astrophysicist&#8217;s third accuser, <a href="https://www.patheos.com/blogs/nosacredcows/2018/11/two-more-women-accuse-neil-degrasse-tyson-of-sexual-misconduct/?fbclid=IwAR18GcUuHKFOYjZN2_fepp-SWmPNtoKu1EJx1M_3Y_1-BhWQJb1l72ia0IY">Ashley Watson</a>, who worked as Tyson&#8217;s driver earlier this year and said that she had not taken Amet&#8217;s accusations very seriously because of all the praise she heard about how &#8220;amazing a person&#8221; Tyson was and descriptions of Amet as a &#8220;mentally disturbed individual&#8221; who &#8220;lies for a living.&#8221; After Tyson allegedly made sexual advances toward her to the point she felt compelled to quit her job, Watson now regrets having been so dismissive of Amet&#8217;s claims.
Watson&#8217;s accusation prompted Fox Broadcasting Company and National Geographic, who produce Tyson&#8217;s hit show &#8220;Cosmos,&#8221; to announce that they are conducting an official investigation into the claims. It also triggered an official statement from NYC&#8217;s American Museum of Natural History saying they have received no complaints about him over the two decades he&#8217;s worked there, as well as a lengthy response posted on Facebook by Tyson.
In the post, Tyson apologizes for expressing his affection to the two recent accusers in ways he suggested were misunderstood while also confirming some of the details of the women&#8217;s accounts. As to Amet&#8217;s claims, he denies raping her, saying instead that the two had been &#8220;intimate&#8221; a few times while in graduate school at UT Austin. He also strongly suggested that she had likely created a &#8220;false memory&#8221; through her New Age healing techniques.
&#8220;Watson, Allers, and Amet have disputed much of Tyson&#8217;s statement,&#8221; Ghorayshi notes, while &#8220;Tyson declined multiple requests to comment on this story.&#8221;
After a fourth woman came forward accusing Tyson of having drukenly propositioned her in January 2010 while at a holiday party for employees of the American Museum of Natural History, a claim documented in a 2014 email, BuzzFeed published its detailed account of Amet&#8217;s claims:

The rape, she said, happened one day that semester, at his apartment. He gave her a drink in a cup that looked like a coconut shell, she said, which she thought was water. The next thing Amet remembers is waking up naked in Tyson&#8217;s bed, seeing him naked performing oral sex on her. When he realized she had woken up, she said, he began to penetrate her. The rest of her memory of the day is fragmented, she said.
&#8220;I came out of it for a moment and shook my head, and then I went out again,&#8221; Amet said. &#8220;The next thing I knew, I was at class the next day.&#8221;

BuzzFeed reached out to a therapist at the university Amet says she spoke to about the incident, but the therapist declined to comment. Amet&#8217;s husband, however, told BuzzFeed that &#8220;around the time he first met her in 1986, she told him something bad had happened with Tyson, and that he came up many times throughout their marriage.&#8221; He said he never heard her use the word &#8220;rape,&#8221; but &#8220;did remember that she described being drugged by Tyson, and vaguely alluded to something traumatic.&#8221;

After Fourth Accuser, BuzzFeed Reveals Findings Of Years-Long Investigation Of Neil DeGrasse Tyson Claims

Astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson has denied allegations of sexual misconduct made against him, responding to three women who accused him of inappropriate behavior in the workplace.
Over the course of the last month, at least three women have accused deGrasse Tyson of sexual harassment, reporting their stories to the <a href="https://www.patheos.com/blogs/nosacredcows/2018/11/two-more-women-accuse-neil-degrasse-tyson-of-sexual-misconduct/">religion website Patheos</a>. One woman, a former colleague, says that deGrasse Tyson reached into her dress while checking out her tattoo of the solar system. Another woman — Tyson&#8217;s former secretary — says he propositioned her last summer.
A third woman, who made her accusations earlier than the other two, says deGrasse Tyson raped her when the pair were graduate students at the University of Texas at Austin in 1984.
In an<a href="https://www.facebook.com/notes/neil-degrasse-tyson/on-being-accused/10156870826326613/"> incredibly long Facebook post</a>, deGrasse Tyson explained his side of the allegations, accusing himself of making innocent mistakes that he only discovered later were interpreted as &#8220;creepy.&#8221;
&#8220;For a variety of reasons, most justified, some unjustified, men accused of sexual impropriety in today’s “me-too” climate are presumed to be guilty by the court of public opinion. Emotions bypass due-process, people choose sides, and the social media wars begin,&#8221; deGrasse Tyson begins, lecturing his audience on the importance of &#8220;evidence,&#8221; particularly in instances of sexual misconduct.
&#8220;I’ve recently been publically (sic) accused of sexual misconduct,&#8221; he added. &#8220;These accusations have received a fair amount of press in the past forty-eight hours, unaccompanied by my reactions. In many cases, it’s not the media’s fault. I declined comment on the grounds that serious accusations should not be adjudicated in the press. But clearly I cannot continue to stay silent.&#8221;
He then goes on to describe his version of each allegation.
On the subject of the woman whose tattoo he examined, he said he was simply going in for a closer look:
<blockquote>I only just learned (nine years after) that she thought this behavior creepy. That was never my intent and I’m deeply sorry to have made her feel that way. Had I been told of her discomfort in the moment, I would have offered this same apology eagerly, and on the spot. In my mind’s eye, I’m a friendly and accessible guy, but going forward, I can surely be more sensitive to people’s personal space, even in the midst of my planetary enthusiasm.</blockquote>
On the subject of his former assistant, he denies trying to seduce her and says the &#8220;handshake&#8221; she thought was creepy was a secret ritual he&#8217;d been taught by a Native American elder.
<blockquote>Further, I never touched her until I shook her hand upon departure. On that occasion, I had offered a special handshake, one I learned from a Native elder on reservation land at the edge of the Grand Canyon. You extend your thumb forward during the handshake to feel the other person’s vital spirit energy &#8212; the pulse. I’ve never forgotten that handshake, and I save it in appreciation of people with whom I’ve developed new friendships.
At that last meeting in my office, I apologized profusely. She accepted the apology. And I assured her that had I known she was uncomfortable, I would have apologized on the spot, ended the evening, and possibly reminded her of the other social gathering that she could attend. She nonetheless declared it her last day, with only a few days left of production.</blockquote>
As for the woman accusing him of rape:
<blockquote>Over this time I had a brief relationship with a fellow astro-graduate student, from a more recent entering class. I remember being intimate only a few times, all at her apartment, but the chemistry wasn’t there. So the relationship faded quickly. There was nothing otherwise odd or unusual about this friendship&#8230;</blockquote>
The latter allegation is the most problematic, according to deGrasse Tyson. He says he found her story &#8220;odd,&#8221; that he believes her story has changed significantly, and that reporters accepted the claims without asking questions: &#8220;I note that this allegation was used as a kind of solicitation-bait by at least one journalist to bring out of the woodwork anybody who had any encounter with me that left them uncomfortable.&#8221;
These excuses mark a significant departure from other #MeToo allegations, which simply issued unqualified denials to be sorted out later on the assumption that the men involved were guilty. Neil deGrasse Tyson seems like he doesn&#8217;t intend on going down without a fight.
