The Justice Department confirmed Monday that the United States Naval Academy would no longer consider race in admissions, according to a court document. 
In a joint <a href="https://www.justice.gov/opa/media/1403766/dl?inline=&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_source=govdelivery" target="_blank" rel="noopener">filing</a> with Students for Fair Admission, the Trump administration asked a federal appeals court to dismiss a lawsuit against the academy over a policy that allowed it to consider race during the admissions process. Students for Fair Admission, which sued the academy in October 2023, agreed that the suit was no longer needed due to policy changes implemented by the Trump administration. 
“This Department is committed to ending illegal discrimination and restoring merit-based opportunity throughout the federal government,” <a href="https://www.justice.gov/opa/pr/justice-department-addresses-racial-discrimination-lawsuit-challenging-race-based-admissions">said</a> Attorney General Pamela Bondi. “We are proud to partner with the Department of Defense to permanently end race-based admissions at the United States Naval Academy and ensure that admission to this prestigious institution is based exclusively on merit.”
The filing states that the lawsuit is now moot due to the policy change and asks that the U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit dismiss a lower court&#8217;s ruling that kept race-based admissions in place. The policy allowed the academy to “consider race or ethnicity as one of many nondeterminative factors” for admission. 
This policy ended after President Donald Trump signed an executive order on January 27 that said that no one within the military should be given any advantage based on gender or race. 
In compliance with that order, Naval Academy Superintendent Vice Admiral Yvette Davids issued a memo in February saying that “at no point during the admissions process (including qualification and acceptance) should race, ethnicity, or sex be a factor for admission.”
The joint filing said that considering race and ethnicity for admissions does not contribute to military cohesiveness, lethality, recruitment, or national security. 
“It is the military judgment of the Department of Defense that recruiting and promoting individuals based on merit alone, and not based on their immutable characteristics, improves unit cohesion and performance,” the joint filing said. “The Department of Defense has now determined that neither the recruitment and retention of talented officers nor the legitimacy of the U.S. military are positively affected by the service academies’ consideration of race in admissions.”
Students for Fair Admission was the organization behind the landmark case where the Supreme Court ruled that affirmative action in higher education was unconstitutional and racially discriminatory.

President Donald Trump hit the ground running on Monday morning, announcing early in the day that he had ordered the &#8220;immediate dismissal&#8221; of the Board of Visitors for all three major service academies: the United States Military Academy at West Point, New York; the Naval Academy at Annapolis, Maryland; and the Air Force Academy near Colorado Springs, Colorado.
Trump delivered the news directly to the public via his social media platform Truth Social, saying that he planned to help make the American military stronger by appointing all new board members who shared Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth&#8217;s vision for a military free of &#8220;Woke Leftist ideologues.&#8221;
The Board of Visitors functions similarly to an advisory board.

Trump&#8217;s announcement comes just 24 hours after a <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/pete-hegseth-social-justice-and-dei-are-out-at-military-academies" target="_blank" rel="noopener">similar one from Hegseth</a>, who said that he&#8217;d already met with leadership at the service academies and was pleased with the progress they&#8217;d made thus far in excising Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) programs from the academies.
&#8220;Last week, I met with the leadership of @westpoint_USMA, @navalacademy and @af_academy,&#8221; Hegseth said in his post to X. &#8220;My message was simple: stick to leadership, standards, excellence, war fighting, and readiness. These are MILITARY ACADEMIES, not civilian universities.&#8221;
&#8220;I was impressed by the changes already underway and look forward to visiting each institution. Social Justice and DEI are OUT; History, Engineering, and War Studies are IN,&#8221; he continued. &#8220;We must restore the warrior ethos to the @deptofdefense — and it starts with our future leaders.&#8221;
Hegseth has been very clear — since long before he was confirmed to his new post — that one of his top priorities would be ridding the military of DEI programs and initiatives, restoring the Warrior Ethos, and making the American military the strong and lethal fighting force that it has been in the past.

Can being versed in gender and sexuality theory help you be a more effective Navy sailor? The U.S. Naval Academy appears to think it can, and is <a href="https://www.usna.edu/HRO/jobinfo/Tenure-track-English-GenderStudies-AY24.php">looking to hire</a> a specialist in Gender And Sexuality Studies to join its faculty for a tenure-track position.
The professor will teach a course that brings Naval cadets up to date on the topics &#8220;through a set of focused readings of theories, histories, perspectives, and/or major figures in LGBTQ, women&#8217;s and/or gender studies,&#8221; <a href="https://www.usna.edu/Academics/Majors-and-Courses/course-description/HE.php" target="_blank" rel="noopener">according</a> to the course description on the Naval Academy&#8217;s website.
According to the description, readings for the elective course may include the authors Audre Lorde, Sarah Ahmed, Kimberle Crenshaw, and Gloria Anzaldua, who describes herself as a “Chicana dyke-feminist.&#8221; If these authors are a smattering of the Naval Academy&#8217;s curriculum for this course, the country&#8217;s next generation of sailors is in for a solid dose of woke academic theories.
Sarah Ahmed, a contemporary British-born feminist professor of Pakistani and English descent, focuses on the intersection between sexuality, race, and feminism. She is the author of &#8220;The Feminist Killjoy Handbook,&#8221; which <a href="https://www.hachettebookgroup.com/titles/sara-ahmed/the-feminist-killjoy-handbook/9781541603752/?lens=seal-press" target="_blank" rel="noopener">argues</a> that &#8220;killing joy can be a radical world-making project.&#8221;
&#8220;Do you refuse to laugh at offensive jokes? Have you ever been accused of ruining dinner by pointing out your companion’s sexist comment? Are you often told to stop being so &#8216;woke&#8217;? If so, you might be a feminist killjoy — and this handbook is for you,&#8221; reads the book&#8217;s description.
Gloria Anzaldua, who, like Ahmed, was a lesbian, describes herself as a “Chicana dyke-feminist&#8221; as well as a &#8220;poet, writer, and cultural theorist.” She writes about her experience as a &#8220;Chicana&#8221; — a term used by some Mexican Americans to describe their Native Mexican ancestry — intersects with gender, race, and colonialism.

Audre Lorde, yet another lesbian, <a href="https://www.poetryfoundation.org/poets/audre-lorde" target="_blank" rel="noopener">described</a> herself as “black, lesbian, mother, warrior, poet.” She was a professor and progressive activist who was influential in the civil rights, anti-war, and feminist movements during the &#8217;70s and &#8217;80s.
One of her poetry collections, &#8220;The Black Unicorn,&#8221; <a href="http://www.jjay.cuny.edu/sites/default/files/News/Justice_Matters_50.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">draws on</a> African mythologies as the basis for exploring questions about gender, sexuality, racial identity, pride, and motherhood, according to the college.
Lorde and two other women writers <a href="https://www.poetryfoundation.org/poets/audre-lorde" target="_blank" rel="noopener">founded</a> an activist publishing company called Kitchen Table: Women of Color Press, which was dedicated to promoting black feminist authors.
The last author on the Naval Academy&#8217;s Gender and Sexuality course list is Kimberle Crenshaw, a Critical Race Theory scholar and lawyer who teaches at both Columbia Law School and UCLA and is credited with coining the term &#8220;intersectionality,&#8221; which is widely used by progressives today to refer to a method of analyzing privilege and discrimination.
Crenshaw, who is black, was also part of the legal team representing Anita Hill at Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas&#8217; Senate confirmation hearings in the 1990s. Hill accused Thomas of sexual harassment.
She first used the term in her essay &#8220;Demarginalizing the Intersection of Race and Sex: A Black Feminist Critique of Anti-discrimination Doctrine Feminist Theory and Antiracist Politics.&#8221;
In 2020, she insisted that intersectionality is not &#8220;identity politics on steroids&#8221; or &#8221; a mechanism to turn white men into the new pariahs.&#8221;
&#8220;It’s basically a lens, a prism, for seeing the way in which various forms of inequality often operate together and exacerbate each other,&#8221; she <a href="https://time.com/5786710/kimberle-crenshaw-intersectionality/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">told</a> Time Magazine. &#8220;We tend to talk about race inequality as separate from inequality based on gender, class, sexuality or immigrant status.&#8221;
The Biden administration has promoted woke themes across the federal government for years.
Earlier this year, President Biden doubled down, <a href="https://public-inspection.federalregister.gov/2023-03779.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">signing</a> yet another executive order requiring the federal government to prioritize diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI). Over the last few years, that guidance has permeated the whole of government, including the military.
Earlier this summer, the administration <a href="https://apnews.com/article/pentagon-drag-show-02786741192dac64e566d41048a96ee5#" target="_blank" rel="noopener">pumped</a> the brakes on drag shows at U.S. military bases after criticism from Republicans. Last year, the Navy <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/navy-hires-active-duty-drag-queen-to-combat-sinking-recruitment" target="_blank" rel="noopener">hired</a> an active-duty sailor and drag queen to be the face of the Navy’s campaign to fight plummeting recruitment. In 2021, the Army <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/army-releases-woke-cartoon-recruitment-ad-after-woke-cia-ads-mocked" target="_blank" rel="noopener">debuted</a> ads showing a cartoon lesbian wedding, just days after the CIA caught flack for a similarly woke recruitment ad campaign.
The Naval Academy defended the course in an emailed statement, saying the Academy &#8220;focuses on respect and inclusion of people of all backgrounds in order to develop well-rounded future leaders in the Navy and Marine Corps.&#8221;
&#8220;A vast array of intellectual ideas, approaches and theories are mentioned during classroom discussions,&#8221; the Academy told The Daily Wire. &#8220;The Naval Academy educates midshipmen to be critical thinkers who can analyze issues from multiple perspectives and contexts; our focus is on how to think, not what to think.&#8221;
Besides the Gender And Sexuality course, the Naval Academy&#8217;s English Department also offers a course on Latinx Studies, in which students will learn about &#8220;identity formation through many of its facets, including: class, race, gender, sexuality, and language.&#8221;
And of course, since the Navy <a href="https://www.usna.edu/Admissions/Student-Life/General-Information-for-Midshipmen.php" target="_blank" rel="noopener">pays</a> 100% of cadets&#8217; tuition, room, and board, you the taxpayer get to foot the bill for all of it.

Back on May 27, President Joe Biden <a href="https://www.whitehouse.gov/briefing-room/statements-releases/2022/05/27/remarks-by-president-biden-at-the-united-states-naval-academys-class-of-2022-graduation-and-commissioning-ceremony/">delivered</a> a commencement address to the graduating class at the Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland.
In it, he claimed that he was once appointed to the military school in 1965 by then Sen. J. Caleb Boggs (R-DE).
The two faced off seven years later when Biden challenged Boggs for the Senate seat. In one debate, Biden recounted how Boggs said Biden would still be in the military if he had accepted the appointment, as Biden would have graduated in 1969 and then been in the Navy for the next five years at least.
“The best line of the debate was after it’s all over, the announcer, the questioner — who was a good guy, but supported my opponent, who was a good man as well, I might add — and he said, ‘Sen. Boggs, is there anything else you want to say?’ And he said, ‘Yes, just one thing.’ And he took the microphone. He said, ‘You know, Joe, if you accepted my commission to the — my appointment to the academy,’ he said, ‘you’d still have one year and three months’ active duty and I’d have no problems right now,&#8217;” Biden recounted in his address.
Since then, journalists have been trying to find any record of that, especially given the fact that Biden often stretches the truth &#8212; or tells outright lies.
&#8220;Curators at the Delaware Historical Association in Wilmington were able to find records of Boggs’ academy nominations for just one year in the early 1960s and could not locate records for either 1965 or the more plausible year 1961,&#8221; the New York Post <a href="https://nypost.com/2022/06/14/no-record-of-biden-naval-academy-appointment-he-boasted-about/">reported</a>.
&#8220;That means, barring evidence from an unlikely third party, that it’s probable only Biden — who often shares incorrect or exaggerated memories — can prove his claim.&#8221;
“Our staff devoted a large chunk of last week to this project. We hauled and sorted through a few dozen boxes from the relevant years, which proved to be a needle-in-a-haystack proposition, as we feared,” chief curator Leigh Rifenburg told the Post.
The paper noted that Biden graduated from the University of Delaware in 1965 and then attended law school at Syracuse University, pointing out that a 1965 appointment would have been highly unusual as &#8220;the academy doesn’t grant graduate degrees.&#8221;
“To be safe, we searched the full range of dates from 1960 to 1965. It does seem extraordinarily unlikely that an appointment would have been made in 1965, given President Biden’s years of matriculation at the University of Delaware, but we wanted to be thorough,” Rifenburg told the paper. &#8220;We were unable to find appointments for entry in 1961, 1963, 1964, or 1965.&#8221;

“Top Gun: Maverick” used authentic U.S. Navy jets while filming, but the planes didn’t come cheap. 
Fortune <a href="https://fortune.com/2022/05/26/top-gun-maverick-studio-paid-navy-11000-hour-fighter-jet-rides-tom-cruise-not-allowed-to-touch-controls/">reported</a> that the studio shelled out more than $11,000 per hour for the privilege, and lead actor Tom Cruise wasn’t even allowed to touch the controls.
Fans of the 1986 cult classic “Top Gun” are thrilled to see Cruise returning to one of his most iconic projects. The 2022 version, “Maverick,” promises the same same action and thrills as the original, including heart-pounding fighter jet scenes. To make the scenes look real, the Navy let the studio use F/A-18 Super Hornet fighter jets for an hourly fee of $11,364.
The 59-year-old actor has his pilot’s license and had actually flown in the original “Top Gun” movie. He was also able to fly certain aircraft for the new film, just not the Super Hornets. Per Fortune, Pentagon regulations won’t allow non-military personnel from controlling a Defense Department asset other than small arms in training scenarios, Pentagon entertainment media spokesperson Glen Roberts said.
Roberts also said the real Top Gun pilots are nothing like the characters from the movie. He said these cocky, rebellious types of recruits “would never exist in naval aviation.” Fortune described real Top Gun school candidates as “studious air nerds who toil away for hours in the classroom and participate in intense training flights at Naval Air Station Fallon in Nevada.”  
Further, Roberts noted how the military had the option to request script edits, though he’s not aware of any alteration requests for “Top Gun.&#8221; The spokesperson said the movie “does not have to be a love letter to the military” but it does “need to uphold the integrity of the military.”
Roberts explained that the Super Hornet, a jet known as the “Rhino,” takes center stage in the movie over the more advanced F-35C. He also mentioned how the F-35 is a single-seat plane, which meant actors could not tag along in them.
A lot of “Top Gun: Maverick” was filmed in 2018 but has had its release delayed due in large part to the coronavirus pandemic. Val Kilmer, one of the stars of the original film, returned to “Maverick” with the aid of special technology that helped him speak even after losing his voice from a tracheotomy in 2014 following a throat cancer diagnosis, The Daily Wire <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/val-kilmer-reprises-role-in-top-gun-even-though-he-can-no-longer-speak">reported</a>.
“I’m grateful to the entire team at Sonantic who masterfully restored my voice in a way I’ve never imagined possible,” Kilmer said.

Another coach is out as institutions around the country tighten their grip on the unvaccinated. 
On Monday, Billy Ray Stutzmann — assistant football coach at the Naval Academy — said he has been fired for refusing to receive the COVID-19 vaccine shot. 
“The Naval Academy Athletic Association policy regarding COVID-19 requires all coaches and staff to be vaccinated against this virus,” Stutzmann wrote in a lengthy social media post. “Based on my religious convictions, and after much thought and prayer, I am unable to follow the requirements of the Naval Academy’s Covid-19 policy, as it has changed these last few months. After applying for a religious exemption and attempting to further negotiate alternative working arrangements, I was ultimately relieved of my duties here at Navy. I continue to stand firm in my conviction of faith, but I understand and respect that each individual and institution has a choice on how they wish to manage these issues.”

Stutzmann was in his third season of coaching the Midshipmen. Navy head coach Ken Niumatalolo said his departure was a big loss for the program. 
“He’s added a lot to our program,” Niumatalolo <a href="https://apnews.com/article/college-football-sports-religion-ken-niumatalolo-coronavirus-pandemic-b625304d6681de99b3587cf71868c42b">said</a>. “Wish him the best of luck, he and his wife Shanelle. Wonderful young man. Got a bright, bright future in this profession.”
As the COVID-19 vaccine has polarized the country, universities — and their athletic programs — have seen a major push for everyone to be fully vaccinated. 
Washington State head football coach Nick Rolovich came out with a statement in July saying he would not receive the vaccine, forcing him to participate in Pac-12 Media Days remotely. 
After the state of Washington announced a mandate in August requiring employees working in K-12 up to higher education to be vaccinated, Rolovich said he would follow the mandate, though he did not specifically say he would receive the vaccine. The mandate does allow for religious and medical exceptions. 
His refusal to openly say whether he has taken the shot has caused many in the media to question whether Rolovich should remain the head coach of the Washington State football team. 
On Monday, Rolovich was grilled by a reporter on his refusal to say whether or not he’s vaccinated. 
&#8220;Yeah, I&#8217;m not going to talk about that Chris. I understand what you guys are trying to get to,&#8221; Rolovich said when asked whether he had scheduled his COVID shot.

The reporter went on to continue asking Rolovich why he has refused to say whether he has received the vaccine or is applying for a religious or medical exemption, citing that people are “upset” with his lack of transparency.  
All employees working in school facilities will have until October 18 to be fully vaccinated or risk losing their jobs.

Speaking to the graduating class of midshipmen at the U.S. Naval Academy on May 28, Vice President Kamala Harris, decided to throw in a woke joke that elicited only tepid applause while she laughed uproariously.
Harris stated, “Just ask any Marine today, would she rather carry 20 pounds of batteries or a rolled-up solar panel, and I am positive she will tell you a solar panel — and so would he.”
Harris led up to her woke joke by summoning various critical incidents in American history that represented watershed events, all in order to lead to her climate change agenda.
“In fact, we are at a significant turning point,&#8221; she said. &#8220;Just look at the last several months and you know what I’m talking about. And look at several moments in our nation’s history for perspective. Think about it. There was the world before the stock market crashed in 1929 — and the world after. The world before the attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941 — and the world after. The world before the Civil Rights Act in 1964— and the world after. The world before the Berlin Wall fell in 1989 — and the world after.”
“At some of these critical moments our nation was compelled to take a hard look at our priorities and our preparedness,” she continued. “And another turning point was September 11, twenty years ago this year, when airplanes hit the Twin Towers and our Pentagon; when Flight 93 crashed in Pennsylvania. That day shaped your entire life and it shaped our entire nation. It tested our systems, our structures, our very standing in the world.”
She then segued to how the whole world was “interconnected” and “interdependent” before she reached her apogee, claiming, “One country’s carbon emissions can threaten the sustainability of the whole earth.”
&#8220;Well, midshipmen, we are now entering the next era; a new age, a new epoch with its own tests, with its own challenges, and with its own opportunities,&#8221; she continued. &#8220;The global pandemic, you see, of course, has accelerated what was happening before. And it has accelerated our world into a new era. It has forever impacted our world; it has forever influenced our perspective. And if we weren’t clear before, we know now: our world is interconnected. Our world is interdependent. And our world is fragile. One country’s carbon emissions can threaten the sustainability of the whole earth. This, midshipmen, is the era we are in, and it is unlike any era that came before. So the challenge now, the challenge before us now, is how to mount a modern defense to these modern threats.
